CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When Humber College professor Anke Föller-Carroll learned of the drowning death of a former student, she vowed to transform the tragedy into a teachable moment. The result of her efforts? A recently wrapped nine-week program of swimming lessons for Humber international students funded almost completely by Ignite, Humber’s student organization, and the college’s School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism. "We did (the lessons) in memory of a former student who, unfortunately, drowned in 2015," Föller-Carroll said of Satvir Singh, a 22-year-old student from India who died after accidentally falling into Brampton’s Professor’s Lake on Aug. 23, 2015. Singh, like so many new immigrants to Canada, simply didn’t know to swim - and neither, Fölll See TEACHER, page 23

Chris Niehaus, 7, aiming for Olympic gold in synchronized swimming CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com As the rolling drums and rhythm guitars of The Surfaris’ hit song Wipe Out reverberate off the walls of their practice pool, a team of young Olympium Synchro swimmers take deep gulps of air, then sink beneath the water in unison. Seconds later, as the song crescendos, seven-year-old Chris Niehaus explodes from the water’s surface, hands held high, face plastered with a smile. That Chris was chosen to star as the lone figure splashily propelled above his septet of teammates could be seen as a metaphor for his breaking the gender barrier in the almost-exclusively female sport of synchronized swimming. The Notre-Dame-de-Grâce second grader is, after all, not just the only boy on his pre-provincial team of eight, but also the sole male amid the Olympium Synchronized Swimming Club’s roster of 135 swimmers. But that’s not something Chris, nor any of his teammates, seem to take much notice of, said Coach Marin Pollock. "He seems almost completely unaware - they all do," Pollock laughed last week at Bishop Marrocco Pool, during the second of the team’s twice-weekly practices. "Even at competitions, you would think that (Chris being the only boy there) would be something they’d be hyperaware of, but it really doesn’t faze them. He’s so part of the team now, we often forget," she laughed. "In fact, the girls often comment that they think it’s weird that other teams make a big deal

Chris’s newly acquired ’superstar’ status, however, isn’t one he inherited solely by virtue of his gender - it’s a label he’s earned by bringing home a total of five gold medals from local and regional competitions. Inspired by his 10-year-old sister, Sophie, Chris said he first began asking his mom, Liz Niehaus, if he could start synchronized swimming lessons "years ago." "When she tried it, I really wanted to do it, too, so I asked if

nally asked (Olympium Synchro’s) head coach if she would take on a boy and she said yes," Niehaus said, noting that Chris worked his way up through the Olympium’s rec and novice synchro programs before landing himself a spot on the pre-provincial team with girls up to four years older than him. "I’m proud of him for sticking with it. I know it’s hard to do something that’s not really the norm, and I do worry that, as he gets older, kids at school might

boys could do it for a really long time, and now here I am," a begoggled and shivering Chris told The Etobicoke Guardian while on a break from practice last week. While Chris’s mom initially tried to enrol Chris in an intro to competitive swimming program before he dove into synchro at age six, she said it wasn’t the right fit for her "natural athlete" of a son. "He hated it. It was definitely not for him, and he just kept asking me, ’When can I do synchro? When can I do synchro?’, so I fi-

tease him, but so far that hasn’t happened. And as long as he’s happy and he wants to keep doing it, I say go for it." For Chris, who also does karate and plays hockey, synchronized swimming is now his favourite sport. "I like it because you can sort of go upside down, you get to learn routines, you get to learn how to swim and go under water, you get to learn how to do laps, and you get to learn how to hold your breath for a really long time," he said. "But my favourite part is that all the girls like me because they think I’m special because I’m the only boy." Chris’s "only boy" status, however, might not stand for long. With the International Swimming Federation (FINA) recently allowing male synchro swimmers to compete in mixed duets during its World Championships for the first time in 2015, Pollock thinks a male breakout in the sport is inevitable in the not-so-distant future. "Eventually, once it’s this thing that everyone’s doing, Canada wants to be able to say we already have male athletes, so you definitely see clubs all over the place trying to get boys to try synchro," she said, noting that Chris is ahead of the curve. "He’s the first boy I’ve ever coached and it’s been a great experience. He’s a strong swimmer, he’s flexible, he’s a good performer and a good kid. I’d hate for people to discourage him, because if he really sticks with it, he has the opportunity to go all the way to the top." For Chris, a trip to the top means one day climbing atop synchro’s Olympic podium - a dream that will sadly remain out of reach until the International Olympic Committee follows in FINA’s inclusive footsteps. "I want to go to the Olympics one day and win another gold," Chris said, the five medals he’s already won jangling proudly around his neck.

Shareholders took the case to court and saved the graveyard from development DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca With over 100,000 interments and 73 acres (30 hectares) of lightly rolling land, Park Lawn Cemetery on Bloor Street at Prince Edward is the largest cemetery in Etobicoke, and the fourth largest in Toronto. Only Mount Pleasant, Pine Hills and Prospect are larger. Park Lawn’s extensive tree canopy and beautiful stone grave markers fit in well with the nearby Humber River Valley and the beautiful homes in the surrounding neighbourhoods. When the cemetery opened in 1892 on 50 acres (20 ha) of land, it was called Humbervale Cemetery and was funded by the sale of shares. Many of the shares were held by local farming

However, it was soon discovered that he actually intended to turn the land into a residential subdivision, moving some of the existing graves to different locations on the property. Some of the former shareholders formed the Humbervale Cemetery Defence Association and

took the owner to court. After appeals on both sides, the case ended up in the Supreme Court where the former shareholders were victorious. In December 1915, the cemetery was purchased by a new company that renamed it Park Lawn and vowed to maintain it as a cemetery in perpetuity. An exploration of the grave markers reveals a veritable "who’s who" of Etobicoke history. From the field

of politics the graves include former mayor Rob Ford, York mayor Fergy Brown and MPP John McBeth. Dr. Alan Roy Dafore is buried there, as are musician Jeff Healey, artist Carl Ahrens, journalist Gordon Sinclair and Kingsway developer Robert Home Smith. Especially notable are the many graves of sports figures including Conn Smyth, Lou Marsh, Harold Ballard, Gus Ryder, Butch Keeling and

Lou Cavalaris. There are also 96 war graves of Commonwealth Service Personnel from World Wars I and II. Two unique but forlorn plots worth attention hold the unmarked graves of 75 British Home Children who were brought to Canada under the auspices of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes, one of several British charities that did such work between 1863 and 1949. In total about 110,000 orphans were placed with Ca-

nadian families. Many were treated well, but some received nothing but abuse. The plots in Park Lawn are owned by Barnardo’s, which now helps relatives to reunite families by offering information on these children. Many of the graves have now been identified and a large marker has been erected which can be seen online at: canadianbritishhomechildren.weebly.com/parklawn-cemetery---barnardoplot.html. Cemetery management encourages visitors to stroll through this tranquil corner of the world. Many come to enjoy the wildlife, from the deer that make their way up from the Humber River valley to foxes, opossums, coyotes, raccoons, chipmunks, squirrels and countless birds. Others pick a shady spot to read and relax in peace.

Deep inside our ears are several thousand microscopic “hair cells.” These cells are arranged in rows and each cell is responsible for hearing a specific pitch, similar to the keys on a piano. As we age, some of these cells become damaged… from loud noises, chronic conditions, or the

treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help.2 This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. By studying those people having difficulty in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

The ’Fair Hydro Plan’ is anything but that Welcome one and all to the Ontario government’s incredible, stupendous hydro-cuts emporium where you can buy cheaper electricity today - then pay big-time for it later. If this makes the Liberals’ misnamed Fair Hydro Plan sound like a slick scheme concocted to get them re-elected, that’s because to a large degree it is. Yes, we know Ontarians were begging for relief from constantly soaring hydro bills. We also know many consumers are cheering Premier Kathleen Wynne’s plan to slash hydro rates by 25 per cent this year and then limit increases to the inflation rate for the next four years. But as the province’s financial watchdog reported last week, the cost of insulating Ontarians from soaring energy bills will eventually shock them to the tips of their toes. To be sure, the Liberal plan will save consumers $24 billion over the next four years. That’s a tidy sum and it’s no coincidence the savings are perfectly timed to inspire warm and fuzzy feelings for the Liberals before the June 2018 election. But as the Financial Accountability Office just reported, it will cost the province a jaw-dropping $45 billion over the next 29 years to make those savings possible. In addition, if interest rates rise or the province starts running deficits again, the eventual cost of the plan could balloon to $93 billion. The inescapable reason for this daunting bill is that the province must borrow heavily to pay for the discounted hydro rates. That money must be repaid. And in order to lower hydro bills in the short term, the government will need to increase them in subsequent years to cover the debt that finances the plan. It’s all a bit like using a carving knife to extract a splinter. The operation may succeed, but the bleeding will be considerable. So, while you can, enjoy seeing average monthly hydro bills drop from $163 to $123 starting this summer. But brace yourself for hydro rates to increase by 6.8 per cent a year from 2021 to 2027. Be ready for the average monthly bill to rise to $213 by 2028. It is a reminder, too, of how badly this government has mismanaged the electricity file - think of their subsidies for wind and solar energy we don’t need. Other governments of different political stripes have made a mess of it before. But the Wynne government has nothing to be proud of in how they’ve handled Ontario’s electricity system.

People will keep fighting for ’$15 and Fairness’ Today, June 1, Queen’s Park shuts for the summer. It’s the last day before fall for the Liberal government to say they’re reforming Ontario’s labour laws, and raising minimum wage to $15. As of this writing, I don’t know what the government announced or hasn’t. I know people in the $15 and Fairness campaign made every day count. They’ve already done more than politicians thought they could. So many of us are stuck in precarious and parttime jobs. For two years, campaigners seemed to be everywhere, on streetcars and street corners, reaching people who fit that description. They’ve demanded $15

They were poised a week ago to get serious labour reform, not because government suddenly saw the light, as the Workers’ Action Centre’s Deena Ladd says, but because people fought for it. Sarkar, a community action leader for Access Alliance - that’s one of his three part-time jobs - in Scarborough’s Oakridge and East York’s Crescent Town. He’s met fellow immigrants who wait in vain to get called to work, or are sent home after an hour or two, or get $6 or $7 an hour at a grocery or convenience store. They need rent money, but without paid sick days, Sarkar says, many go to work sick, or pay a further price in back pain, or repetitive strain injuries. Malka Paracha, a food service supervisor at York University, "was an anti-union person" a while ago. But then a union, along with students and faculty, helped York’s servers stand up

and win $15 an hour and full benefits. "It is 200 per cent possible. We did it," says Paracha. The Changing Workplaces Review recommendations are a mixed bag. Campaigners knew Ontario’s Chamber of Commerce would call their reforms a job killer, but they kept pushing the government for the full package. If it wasn’t introduced by June 1, perhaps it would come this fall. If MPPs expect this to stop, they’re wrong. "If they don’t listen," Ladd says, "they will hear it at the ballot box." GoodFood Help works to improve food security Grassroots group helps those facing challenges to access fresh, nutritious food JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Toronto residents Kate Salter and Shannon Candido are working to ensure no one has to forgo eating fresh, healthy food because they can’t afford to do so. Last spring, Sadler, who is from the city’s west end, and Candido, who calls Leslieville home, founded GoodFood Help, a peer-topeer food relief initiative that provides healthy, nutritious food to those experiencing temporary, unexpected food insecurity. Together with a team of volunteers, they’ve served upwards of 700 people in the past year. Food drop offs usually take place discreetly at public places like subway stations. GoodFood Help started with a request for a banana on a Bunz online trading zone. Salter replied to the Facebook post and offered to give that person fresh fruit and veggies and some healthy meals. She never did hear back from the original poster but dozens of others from all ages and walks of life facing a range of challenges accessing fresh, healthy food chimed in. "The next morning,

"The need was there." To date, GoodFood Help has provided food to those hit by an expected bill, struggling post-secondary students, people in precarious work situations, individuals on social assistance, and scores of single parentled families. And a year in, the need is greater than ever. "There is a larger need for this than we initially thought. We’re filling the gaps," said Candido, who works as a freelance

graphic and web designer. She also serves as GoodFood Help’s communications and creative director. "We’re feeding people who are undernourished. We’re a nutritious (food) source for people." Salter, who handles the majority of client requests and waitlist as well as all the coordinating and volunteer engagement for GoodFood Help, said the need is a "reflection of how expensive it is to live in Toronto." She said the peer-to-peer initiative is one way for Torontonians who are having trouble accessing fresh, healthy food to receive a little bit of extra, albeit temporary, assistance without red tape, stigma, or

questions asked. "If you say you need food, you need food," said Salter, who is a lawyer by day. Cash donors are keeping the much-needed program going and funds are always needed. "We are completely donation driven," said Salter, who said they’d like to see a long-term plan put in place so that people aren’t stuck seeking out healthy, fresh food options. book.com/goodfoodhelp/ or http://goodfoodhelp.com/ for more information. Diana Bronson, executive director of Food Security Canada, said there is absolutely no excuse for people to be going hungry in such a prosperous country like Canada. Her organization is a pan-Canadian alliance of organizations and individuals that work together to advance food security and food sovereignty through the inter-locking goals of the zero hunger, healthy and safe food, and sustainable food systems. According to Statistics Canada, four million Canadians or 12 per cent of the population is living with some form of food insecurity. What is even more shocking is that 60 per cent of those dealing with food security issues are employed. "A lot of these people are working. They’re just not making a decent wage," said Bronson during an interview with Metroland Media. "I think it’s really important to acknowledge that the primary driver of food insecurity is poverty." She said the government needs to come up with more "income-based solutions" to permanently stop people from experiencing food insecurity. "We’ve been in stop-gap mode for almost 40 years now," Bronson said, pointing to Canada’s first food bank that opened in Edmonton, Alberta back in 1981. "I think everybody knows food banks are not a solution." For more than a decade, Food Security Canada

CANADA TO DEVELOP A NATIONAL FOOD POLICY The Government of Canada is seeking Canadians’ input on the development of its first national food policy. Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay made the announcement Monday at Ryerson University during the Canadian Association of Food Studies’ 12th annual assembly. To help in developing A Food Policy for Canada, the federal government is asking people to fill out an online survey at www.canada.ca/food-policy. This is the first of a number of ways Canadians are being invited to help develop a national food policy. The government also plans on holding broad consultations through events in the coming months. On June 22 and 23, stakeholders will have the opportunity to share their views on the policy’s development and learn more from experts and key policy makers at the A Food Policy for Canada Summit in Ottawa. The overall aim is to shape a food policy across Canada from farm to fork that increases access to affordable food, improves health and food safety, conserves our soil, water, and air, and grows more high-quality food.

has lobbied various levels of government to set a basic income and institute a national food security strategy. Bronson said pilot studies in Ontario for a $17,000 basic income is a good start. Canada-wide, she’d like to see a national food strategy move forward as soon as possible. "None of that is happening now," she said. "Food is a basic human right and all Canadian should have access to it. We need to fix a goal on this country to eliminate hunger. This is not beyond the realm of the possible."

New measures for speeding near schools Advocates for safer speeds are cheering the passage of new provincial legislation. The Safe School Zones act promises to ease the installation of red-light cameras at intersections near schools, among other measures. It will also allow municipalities to enact speed limits lower than 50 km/h near schools. Toronto has already established designated zones which require reduced speeds near schools. There have been demands for reduced speeds following several collisions involving speeding automobiles in the immediate vicinity of a school. Construction projects sped up Two east-side construction projects are finishing up earlier than scheduled. Paving work on Lake Shore Boulevard East between Woodbine Avenue and Leslie Street, plus another project at the intersec-

RAHUL GUPTA TO in Transit tion of Parliament and Dundas streets, is now over, thanks to around-the-clock work which shaved weeks off the original timeline, the city announced this week. The Dundas and Parliament intersection will fully reopen on June 5 once overhead and electrical work is completed. Survey says Torontonians prefer driving over taking transit Even endemic congestion doesn’t deter residents of this city from driving, says a new study. U.S. firm Conduent, formerly photocopy giant Xerox, surveyed residents

from 23 global cities including Toronto and found that, even with frustration for commuting by car on the rise, people are still more likely to drive rather than take a flyer on public transit. The study found 61 per cent of local respondents would consider transit use if trips were quicker, while 41 per cent promised to forego driving altogether should congestion keep rising. Transit employees won’t don uniform during pride parade Transit workers for both the TTC and GO Transit who take part in this year’s Pride Festival parade won’t do so in official garb, the agencies announced last week. The move is billed as a show of solidarity with Toronto police officers who also won’t take part in the march while in uniform. Last week, Toronto Council rejected a motion to withhold funding to Pride if Toronto Police are not allowed to march in uniform.

Parents of special needs children should get involved and connect with each other, advises Jean Hammond. The mother of Cameron, 14, who is typically developing, and Ellie, 12, who has a developmental disability, is in her eighth year in the family leadership program at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, where Ellie accesses outpatient programs and services. "I appreciate that anything that helps my daughter, helps me. But you also

have needs as a caregiver outside of the needs of your child," Hammond said. "Through my volunteer work, and particularly with the family leadership program, I now have a community of friends with similar experience to mine that is absolutely necessary for me." Hammond pays forward the support she has received from parents by supporting other parents. In particular, she is the family lead on a website, developed with Holland Bloorview’s foundation, expected to go live in late June with resources specifically geared to caregivers. It will be part of Holland Bloorview’s website. Melissa Ngo is a family support specialist with Holland Bloorview, which will be exhibiting at the Caregiver Show on June 9 at the Ontario Science Centre. Holland Bloorview of-

fers myriad programs to improve the lives of children with disabilities, including those in the community who are not clients. Ngo reminds caregivers of Holland Bloorview clients, and those in the community, to first care for themselves. "There are people out there who can help," Ngo said. "I know it’s very difficult when you need support. It’s a learning process asking for help. But it’s very important for your own well-being and for your family’s well-being." THE CAREGIVER SHOW Presented by Cannimed and brought to you by Downsizing Diva and Metroland Media, The Caregiver Show takes place on Friday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ontario Science Centre, 770 Don Mills Rd. Admission is free. Visit www.caregivershow.ca for more information.

er-Carroll soon learned, did many of his newcomer classmates. "When I went to his candlelight vigil, I asked all his friends if they knew how to swim, and they all looked at me very puzzled and said, ’No, Miss,’" she said. "I asked why that was, and they said it was either not culturally appropriate where they were from, or there wasn’t a clean body of water available to them, or there just wasn’t someone there to teach them how to swim." Föller-Carroll went home that night to research and found a 2010 study by the Canadian Lifesaving Society that cited new Canadians as four times less likely to know how to swim than people born in Canada. Armed with that information, she set out to spearhead lessons at the college’s North Campus community pool for the non-swimmers among Humber’s contingent of nearly 500 international students. "In general, the Canadian experience is one beside the water, in the water or on the water, so (swimming) is really a skill everyone needs to learn," she said.

Teacher ran nine weeks of swimming lessons

Humber College photo

Ten international students at Humber College recently completed nine weeks of swimming lessons funded by Ignite, Humber’s student organization, and the School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism. Föller-Carroll - with support from Humber’s School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism and Ignite club - initiated a nine-week program of adult beginner swim lessons for students beginning in March. Rinkle Anaghan, an interior decorating student from India, and Alicea Scott, a biotechnology student from Jamaica, were two of the 10 international students who participated in the lessons, which just wrapped up this past week. Anaghan said she was compelled to sign up for the lessons after reading about Singh’s drowning. "I was a non-swimmer, too, so I thought maybe one day that could be me. It’s

better to take the lessons and be safe," she said, noting that she never swam back home in India. Like Anaghan, Scott said she plans to enrol in further swimming lessons to build on the skills she’s learned so far. "I am definitely more comfortable and confident in the water now, but I plan to continue because I want to get it fully down." After watching the students complete their final lesson on May 24, FöllerCarroll said she was very pleased with the results. "I’m happy they learned that respect for water and understand what it takes to be in there now," she said. "It was a huge, huge step for them all."
