Hundreds of angry residents slam airport expansion plans with claims it’s destroying their health and property values TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Greater Toronto Airports Authority officials faced a chorus of angry Etobicoke residents Tuesday night. Approximately 500 Etobicoke and Mississauga residents packed a hall in the Toronto Congress Centre to hear and respond to the Greater Toronto Airports Authority’s (GTAA) growth plans for Toronto Pearson International Airport. Many blasted GTAA officials, and sharply criticized their plans to grow at all. In 2037, GTAA officials forecast a near doubling from 2016 levels to 80-million passengers a year travelling through Pearson airport. "Do not grow. Pearson has exceeded its max," one woman implored. "The decisions being made by the GTAA are all about dollars, all about growth, not about people. We cannot let this happen. It’s destroying our lives. It’s destroying our property values. It’s destroying our health." Another woman charged the GTAA with a lack of accountability. "All of our conversations are with the foxes in charge of the hen house," the woman said. "The foxes don’t report to anybody.

The GTAA is a nonprofit organization which has operated Toronto Pearson airport since 1996. Conducting a 20-year master plan is mandated in the GTAA’s airport lease agreement. Hillary Marshall, GTAA’s vice-president of stakeholder relations and communications, said residents’ feedback will inform "what principles should be considered" in the agency’s growth plans. "We’re taking all your feedback and putting it into a framework for responsible growth: how we invest and how we operate around noise (issues)," Marshall said. The GTAA’s vision is "to be the best airport in the world; to run a first-class international airport that meets the demand for capacity," said Kim Stangeby, the GTAA’s new chief strategy officer. An average day at Pearson sees 120,000 passengers travel through the airport, 1,250 aircraft movements, 1,233 tonnes of cargo flown and 40 to 50 night flights, Stangeby reported. Passenger growth at Toronto’s Pearson airport continues to follow a pattern of doubling every 20 years, Stangeby said, since 10.5-million passengers annually travelled through the airport in the 1970s. growth and capacity," Stangeby said. Etobicoke Centre Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj, like many residents, questioned the GTAA’s growth. "Who says economic growth always provides benefits?" Wrzesnewskyj said in an interview during the meeting. "The environment and noise issues are why people came out here tonight. That’s why they’re engaging. Who says we want that kind of growth?" The GTAA’s phased expansion plans include making terminals 1 and 3 a continuous terminal and adding additional space for passenger processing, Stangeby said. The greatest growth in aviation demand would be in the Middle East (+7.7 per cent) and in the Asia Pacific Rim (+6.2 per cent), with just 2.8 per cent growth expected in North America, ACI World reported. Stangeby showed another slide that called Toronto Pearson "Canada’s and North America’s gateway to the world." It indicated Pearson has the "largest two-hour flight catchment area in North America," meaning more passengers fly from Pearson to destinations within two hours of Toronto than do passengers flying out of New York City, Chicago’s O’Hare airport and LAX. "That’s another reason why there is increased

Robyn Connelly, GTAA director of community relations, reported three noise studies are expected to be completed this fall, including NAV Canada’s independent Toronto Airspace Noise study conducted by a third party. Tuesday night’s meeting had been scheduled for June 28, but was cancelled earlier that day by GTAA officials. An "extensive outreach" of a community flyer absent registration information prompted GTAA concerns the Assembly Hall venue, designed to seat 120 people in a workshop, could not accommodate a huge turnout, a GTAA spokesperson said that night. However, a reporter observed only a handful of residents approach the venue that night to attend the meeting.

DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca Hans and Anna Sachau immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1928 and each of them, individually, built a highly successful business adjacent to their new home in Humber Bay. Hans was a former Naval architect. In 1931, he founded Sachau Marine Construction to build all types of boats from seafleas and runabouts to cruisers and fixed keel sailboats. His property included water rights 600 feet into the lake to accommodate a marine railway. His reputation as a skilled craftsman grew quickly, and in 1939 he built the Alvee, a 60 tonne, twomasted sailboat and the largest sailing vessel on the Great Lakes since LaSalle’s Griffin 261 years earlier. During The Second World War, Hans was subcontracted by the Greavette Boat Company in Gravenhurst to build at least 3

Fairmiles for the Royal Canadian Navy. These 112 foot long motor launches were posted in the St. Lawrence River and Gulf of St. Lawrence to escort convoys, run patrols, handle port defence and perform rescues. Each held three officers and 14 crew, and carried three 20 mm guns. Sachau’s skill was not limited to boat building. He made fins for Mosquito Bombers and designed rehabilitation equipment for returning war veterans. He patented pre-cast concrete panels that could be used to build a house from foundation to roof in 1 ½ days. They were used in the 1950s to build homes in Alderwood and Rexdale. Meanwhile, Anna started a breakfast counter in their home, calling it The Dutch Sisters after their three daughters: Greta, Elisabeth and Elsa-Ann. Although the girls were actually of German descent, she thought it prudent to avoid references to Germany

The business was such a success that she soon opened a large restaurant in a new building designed by Hans. For almost 40 years it was the site of many meals and special events under a

charming sign showing three little girls in traditional Dutch costumes. Advertised as the "most unique restaurant in North America," it had five dining rooms serving steak, lobster and "continental" dish-

cake. Soon after this, the Sachaus added motel units and the business became The Dutch Sisters Inn. In 1953, as the age of wooden ships was fading, Hans built his last boat, The Dutch Boy, and closed his shipyard. Anna passed away of cancer in 1958 and Hans managed The Dutch Sisters Inn on his own. He died in 1963 and his executors continued the business until 1969. The property was sold and a new owner rebuilt the inn in a Spanish style, renaming it Casa Mendoza - a popular dining spot and motel for many years. It was sold to a developer and closed in 2012, and has now been replaced by a condo tower.

We must learn to adapt to game-changers It’s long been said the only constant is change. All one needs to do is examine the pace at which new technologies are altering our daily lives to recognize that the age-old phrase is truer now, perhaps, than it has ever been. Consider that in a relatively brief span of time, hailing a taxi, booking a hotel reservation over the phone, and renting a movie at the video store have all become things of the past. Instead, more and more people get a lift via Uber, secure a place to stay through any number of hotel booking websites or Airbnb, and rely on internetbased video streaming services, such as Netflix, to watch films or catch up with their favourite television shows. If you think those innovations are something, buckle up, because many more are on the way. These socalled game-changers are heralds of what professor Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairperson of the World Economic Forum, calls "the fourth Industrial Revolution". What will the next wave of innovations look like? Well, experts envision being able to receive your online purchases via drone delivery, having the power to buy plans for an item and 3D-printing it at home, and even visiting a store from the comfort of your home thanks to virtual reality. You can also expect the "sharing economy" to not only persevere, but increase in the future. As much as many of those developments sound exciting, they, and others, possess the potential to cause substantial disruptions for existing industries. For example, the trend toward increased automation will directly impact many of us, with the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship estimating nearly 42 per cent of the tasks Canadians are currently paid to do could be at risk of being replaced by technology. As with any seismic shift, one can view what’s coming as a crisis or an opportunity. And, while it won’t always be easy, it’s likely best to take the latter view as resisting change of this magnitude is most likely futile anyway. "One can decry the loss of the old world, but we’re all having to adapt," professor and former provost at York University Sheila Embleton says. "When we link the best of the old with the new, we will end up with something that’s altogether better." She’s right. We can’t always control what changes and challenges will be thrown at us, but we can control how we react. Like the dinosaurs, our choices will essentially boil down to evolve or else.

Doomed strip plaza is part of a big change Toronto’s suburbs were built around strip plazas, and those plazas, practical though they are, have begun to die. In Northwest Scarborough’s Bridletowne area, a developer is knocking down a nine-unit commercial building and building a stack of 60 townhomes where it stood. "The strip mall is a vision that needs to be replaced," says Marco VanderMaas, the project’s Dutch-born architect. VanderMaas sees BT Towns as part of a wave of intensification that must come. With many city neighbourhoods priced out of reach, there’s a "missing middle" for housing, a gap between detached houses and "boxes in the sky," he

since mid-rise condos seem more threatening. The now-doomed plaza on Bridletowne Circle seems normal enough, with a variety store, cleaners, other useful shops. Unsurprisingly, residents wrote to oppose the project. Wouldn’t this worsen traffic, some asked. A decade ago, longtime Bridletowne homeowners hit the roof when condo towers were proposed nearby at the listless Bridlewood Mall. But it was clear the area, greying and suddenly classified as a "priority" neighbourhood, needed new blood. VanderMaas knows people used to Bridletowne’s layout - single-family homes and towers - will think BT Towns too crowded. He argues the units,

with one to three bedrooms, will bring in more families, and there’s room. Also, neighbourhoods change, and mindsets do too. "I always think more neighbours means a more vital community," says VanderMaas, a devotee of the urbanist writer Jane Jacobs. "Is everybody gonna love it? No." VanderMaas argues citizens are obliged to say what they do want, not just what they don’t. Otherwise, he says, they’re hurting their neighbourhood’s evolution. INNOVATION IS DISRUPTING OUR WORLD KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Gone are the days of hailing a taxi, phoning in a hotel reservation, lining up for movie tickets and using cash for purchases in a boutique store. Now you can do it all with the touch of a screen thanks to innovations like Uber, Airbnb, Amazon or Netflix - to name a few. Call them the game changers; they’re shaking up society, altering our lives at an exponential rate. "We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another," predicts professor Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairperson of the World Economic Forum. "The transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced before." Digital technology has already fuelled dramatic changes. Now, Schwab says, the "fourth industrial revolution" is on its way, shaped by a fresh new wave of innovation. Here’s a look at how these disrupters could impact our everyday life.

How we spend our leisure time The travel business has been upended with the influx of online booking sites and rating services like TripAdvisor. Now the sharing economy including Airbnb, VRBO - is chipping away further, leading to disputes over municipal bylaws and local neighbourhoods engulfed by transients and tourists. At the same time, allyou-can eat, buffet-style services are disrupting the en-

tertainment world with services like Spotify and Google Music, ebooks and video-game streaming. Next, Saltzman predicts, cars with data plans will link you to the strongest nearby tower, streaming content via an antenna atop your car.

How we get around Speaking of cars, do you really need one anymore? Uber - connecting drivers and riders - and Zipcars renting cars by the mile or minute - allow us to travel a la carte. And if you do own a car, you may not need someone behind the wheel in a few years. This leads to new possibilities, says Saltzman. "We can make money with our car while we’re not using it - letting it drive other people around. Things are going to get pretty exciting." But not everyone’s excited. The trucking industry is one of many traditional industries sounding alarms over upheaval and job loss.

Andrew McAfee, co-founder of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy, warns that trucking could be one of many industries where traditional middle-class jobs are at risk. In its report Age of Disruption, Deloitte Canada warns the majority of Canadian businesses are not prepared for looming rapid advances in key technologies and will not survive. Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship reports that nearly 42 per cent of the tasks Canadians are currently paid to do can be automated using existing technology. But some, like Newmarket business owner Attila Vinczer, are optimistic about our ability to adapt. Repetitive assembly jobs in his tool-and-die plants are moving toward automation, but he still views himself as a job creator.

"I still hire, but the jobs are different and require different skills like computer expertise and ability to maintain the machines, work websites and social media." No one aims for a hollowed-out plant that runs itself, he adds. "There’s a responsibility among business owners to ensure the workforce is prepared and adaptable, because if no one’s able to make a living in this brave new world, if everything’s automated, who will buy the products?"

How we adapt How does one cope, then, in a world where everything is changing? Experts say the "soft skills" will be essential, but Steve Joordens, psychology professor at the University of Toronto, warns those are the skills we are most in danger of losing, as we isolate in our silos of convenience, plugged into smartphones, live-streaming individual movie choices, interacting in superficial ways on social media, no longer chatting with cashiers or strangers in bank-teller queues. Kids, especially, aren’t learning skills like small talk and conversational

turn-taking, he says. Older generations may worry about how they’ll keep up, while younger ones struggle with expectations. Professors lament that students expect them to be available 24-7; employers say young new hires expect to be promoted to management in two years because that’s how quickly the rest of the world works. From smarthomes to smartphones, we are eager to trade off privacy and security in exchange for convenience - but is that really so smart? Joordens suggests we should prepare ourselves for this fast-changing world by forcing ourselves to slow down and carving out regular digital-free times for "mindfulness." Sheila Embleton, a professor and former provost at York University, agrees. "Those things that have always stood people in good stead will continue to: critical thinking, being adaptable to change, able to have good relationships. "One can decry the loss of the old world, but we’re all having to adapt. When we link the best of the old with the new, we will end up with something that’s altogether better."

HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Known as the Airbnb of parking, the Toronto-based firm Rover Parking is changing the way people think about where they park their car. The cellphone program has a similar concept to Airbnb. It pairs drivers looking to park in the city with an unused parking space in a nearby driveway for a fee that’s 20 to 30 per cent less than a nearby lot. The app is the brain child of Torontonians Grant Brigden and Tom Wootton. The duo has been running the company for just over a year and a half. Although the model is still in its infancy, it’s already had more than 50,000 downloads and roughly 2,000 driveways on board and offering up parking in Toronto. "We’re really focused on driving supply. The key is

to get people to understand that there’s not an easier way out there to make some extra money without doing much," said Brigden. "Some of our top spots are making enough money to even pay for their car lease. "They’re making $400500 a month, which is more than their vehicle (payments). The driveway you have could essentially pay for the car you drive." The app builds on the popular notion of the sharing economy, which has people finding new ways to profit from things they aren’t using on a regular basis by renting it out or sharing with others. Those interested in posting their driveway or spot simply have to sign up, either on the website or through a downloadable app, list their spot, provide a picture of the space and a detailed description. Then those looking for parking can open up the map pro-

vided on the app and head over to the desired space. As a user offering the space, you also have complete flexibility about when the parking is available and for how long. There’s even the option to check out on average how much income space in your neighbourhood can make in a month. The app has expanded to Montreal and parts of the United States. The company is working with the mayor of Barrie, Jeff Lehan, on a pilot program to help find a technical solution to the city’s parking problem by listing residential and commercial parking spaces that sit empty. The program could stop the city from building costly parking garages with taxpayer money "We’re looking to change the style structure of mobility parking that people are so accustomed to," he said.

Statues of 6 ’intriguing’ historical figures slated for area parks CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A runaway slave, the inventor of Canada’s first electric car, the founder of Eatonville as a dairy farm, a nutritional health pioneer, a women’s health advocate and a visionary conservationist. Those are the first six individuals the Etobicoke Historical Society is hoping to pay tribute to with its newly launched History and Art in the Parks initiative, which is currently seeking funding to install sculptures and accompanying plaques in public parks throughout Etobicoke. Joel Winter, the historical society’s secretary, said he was inspired by a similar project initiated in Penetanguishene, Ont., last year as part of that city’s 400th anniversary celebrations of the arrival of French explorer Samuel de Champlain. "I was fascinated by it, and, at the same time, I just feel it’s a shame that people walk through their neighbourhoods and they don’t know about what happened here 100 years ago, 150 years ago," he said. "I think compared to other countries, we’re not doing

a good job of sharing our history." Together with fellow project co-ordinator Jack Xie, Winter spent this past winter brainstorming possible subjects for the project and potential parks where their sculptures and plaques they might be displayed. The six they came up with include:

A nut farmer, Corsan owned the land the park now sits on between 1911 and 1925, where he cultivated 15 species of nuts in nearly 400 varieties. Corsan was also a tireless early supporter of vegetarianism and advocate for the nutritional value of nuts, writing many articles on the subject for the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, Sunday Times and Family Herald.

Glover was a runaway slave who escaped from St. Louis, Mo., in 1852 but was recaptured, beaten and jailed in Milwaukee, Wis., two years later. After being freed by abolitionists, he was delivered to freedom in Canada via the Underground Railroad and settled in the Dundas Street West and Prince Edward Drive area of Etobicoke around 1854. There, he worked as a labourer on Thomas Montgomery’s 120-hectare farm.

Smith was also a visionary conservationist and Civic Guild of Toronto member who advocated for sweeping beautification of city infrastructure. Now that their six subjects have been chosen, both Winter and Xie are now in the process of trying to secure the minimum $50,000 each one’s commemorative statue is estimated to cost. So far, they’ve begun approaching local councillors to request Section 37 funding (from developers), contacting local corporations looking for donations, exploring fundraising options and are preparing to apply to Heritage Canada, the Trillium Foundation and other funding sources for grants. The goal, Winter said, is to raise enough money to get all six projects funded in order to raise community awareness about these "intriguing" figures in Etobicoke’s history. "When you find out about these stories that happened locally, it’s quite fascinating and it gives you more pride in your heritage," Winter said. "The more we learn about our roots and history, the more we can appreciate ourselves as Canadians."
