If she wins, Palumbo will share with her husband, Pat, a two-night culinary experience at a Vintage Hotels’ location in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. "It was quite the experience," Palumbo, 43, said last week, seated with Pat in the dining room of their Etobicoke home in The Elms neighbourhood. "It was kind of scary. What if they gave me something I didn’t know what to do with? It was fun. I’d definitely do it again." Matt Basile hosts Menu Match-UP, a TV show that pairs two visually impaired home chefs with a professional chef in an hour-long cooking competition. Each competitor uses seven mystery ingredients to create an appetizer and a main and faces a panel of judges, including chefs, restaurateurs, food bloggers and recipe developers. Palumbo and her competitor Orly Shamir’s mystery basket included: candy cane beets; rainbow Swiss chard; won ton wrappers; water chestnuts; parmigiano reggiano; flank steak and triple berry jam. Palumbo’s Menu Match-UP episode re-airs Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 8:30 p.m. on Accessible Media Inc. or AMI-tv on Rogers and Shaw Direct channel 888 and on Bell channel 48.

Yolanda Palumbo was a contestant on the first episode of the Scott Brothers’ Menu Match-UP, which pairs two visually impaired contestants with professional chefs to face off in the kitchen using seven mystery ingredients. The episode re-airs on the AMI network. The show’s pilot episode first aired in August. It is the first of eight episodes airing on AMI-tv every Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. AMI is a not-for-profit media company with television and podcast audio programs for Canadians who are blind or partially sighted. Show producers asked contestants for tips and tricks they employ in their own kitchens. "I tried to explain to the producer that I cut backwards," Palumbo said. "I use a little paring knife because I’m more comfortable with that (than a chef’s knife). If I cut a stalk

of celery, I feel the length of it. I start cutting at the end of the vegetable and work toward my hand. My thumb is all cut up." Another tip - both Palumbo and Shamir pour ingredients like olive oil and honey through their fingers to measure it. Navigating the unfamiliar show kitchen was among the competition’s greatest challenges, Palumbo said. At home, she knows where to find every spice, ingredient and cooking utensil. "I’m here to test myself, and prove I can cook just as well as a sighted person,

if not better," she said during the episode. When Palumbo lost her sight at age 28 from a rare condition, she said she feared how it would impact her life. "It’s not the end of the world, but in the beginning, that’s what I thought," she recalled. "I thought I can’t do anything anymore. It’s hard when you first go through it. But you get used to it. You find ways to do things. "Your touch and your feel become your eyes." Palumbo turned to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) when she lost her sight.

Earlier this year, Karen Watts, Palumbo’s CNIB orientation and mobility instructor, told her about Menu Match-UP and encouraged her to audition. Palumbo submitted photos of plated dishes she made for Easter dinner: a Tomahawk of beef, a fruit medley salad, her late mother’s homemade chicken soup, and one of her specialties, pasta with bacon, sun-dried tomatoes and Kalamata olives in cream sauce. She was in. Menu Match-UP, a Scott Brothers Entertainment production, worked closely with CNIB on the show

and to source competitors. The Palumbos continue to give back to CNIB, which provides blind or partially sighted people more than 500,000 hours of direct support each year. The Palumbos’ 14th annual Vision of Hope CNIB gala fundraiser takes place Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018 at Da Vinci Banquet Hall in Woodbridge, Ont. Just for Laughs’ Frank Spadone will perform. Cheryl Zalameda, producer-director with Menu Match-UP, said producers hope the show inspires visually impaired people to cook. "Cooking is very intimidating I learned from many of the home cooks," Zalameda said. "A lot of people give it up or they don’t try at all. Hopefully, the idea is to help encourage other people with sight loss to get motivated by this type of program." The home chefs embraced the experience, excited by the show’s concept, she added. "’Finally, we have a show like this, too,’ they told me," Zalameda said of the popular culinary competition TV show genre, which includes Master Chef, Chopped Canada and Chef in Your Ear, among others.

Despite its iconic status among Canadian boxing aficionados, that’s all Toronto-born boxing legend George Chuvalo remembers of his epic, 15-round brawl against Muhammad Ali back on March 29, 1966 before a hometown crowd at Maple Leaf Gardens. "Fighting Ali here in Toronto was the biggest fight of my career. It’s something that I’ll always remember; something I’ll always value," said Chuvalo, 80, in an interview last week following a Heritage Toronto presentation commemorating his historic world heavyweight championship loss to "The Greatest" more than 51 years ago. "But when people ask me about what I remember, I say the same thing I have with all my other fights: I remember bits and pieces. You don’t remember the whole fight, you just remember the bits and pieces." Lucky for Chuvalo, a new commemorative plaque soon to be installed on Ossington Avenue

will help further cement the momentousness of the fight in not just his memory, but in Toronto’s history. "Ali risked his career and his freedom fighting for his cause - a cause that parallels the fight that’s going on today with the peaceful protestors among athletes who are taking a knee," she said, noting that while Ali was originally supposed to fight American boxer Ernie Terrell for the world heavyweight title in ’66, no American city would agree to

The plaque will also serve as inspiration for a generation of young boxers looking to follow in Ali and Chuvalo’s footsteps - boxers like 18-year-old Graeme Matthews, a junior welterweight who now trains out of the relocated Sully’s Boxing and Athletic Club on Dupont Street. "It’s an honour to train there," the aspiring 2020 Olympian said of boxing out of the same club Ali trained for his 1966 Toronto bout. "We have all these photos up on the walls at the gym and pieces of memorabilia all around. We even have Muhammad Ali’s speed bag and I get to hit that every once in a while, so it’s really inspiring to know that the Great One hit the same bag."

Bloor bike lanes a roadmap for cycling infrastructure What’s the problem between bikes and cars? For years, all we seem to have been able to do is guess, and those guesses have been informed largely by where we’re sitting: on the saddle of a mountain bike, or in the seat of an automobile. If the former, we guess the problem is the proximity to cars and the inattention of their operators; the lack of space and infrastructure on city streets to limit that proximity and maintain safety. If we’re in a car, we see cyclists as contributing to congestion, darting through traffic - trying to claim precious road space for no good reason. Last week, Toronto Transportation staff took a lot of the guesswork out of the equation, releasing an extensive report on the year-long pilot project on the Bloor Street bike lane project. The lanes, which run 2.4 kilometres from Shaw Street to Avenue Road, were subject to intense scrutiny over that time, with some key questions posed: did they in fact increase the number of cyclists? Did they unduly impact other traffic? Did the loss of the parking that was displaced by the bike lanes harm local businesses? Did they improve safety? Now we have some answers. The bike lanes have led to an increase in cyclists: Bloor is now the second-most popular cycling route in Toronto. The lanes have slowed car traffic through the neighbourhood. But local businesses didn’t suffer; indeed, businesses saw a small increase in customers with the bike lanes, and the city has plans to improve movement through other adjustments. And perhaps most importantly, things got a lot safer: there was a reduction of 44 per cent in car/bicycle interactions with the introduction of fully separated bike lanes. Toronto council will be using that report to decide in November whether to make the bike lanes permanent, but it’s a good bet that they will follow staff recommendations and do so, as Mayor John Tory has already signalled he’ll support the permanent lanes. The question then will become, what to do with the example of Bloor Street? The narrow, busy stretch of roadway represents one of the larger challenges when it comes to placing cycling infrastructure. If bike lanes were, as their critics have alleged, going to fail, then surely they would have failed spectacularly on Bloor. The success of those bike lanes should spur council to support even more of them: along Bloor, along Danforth, and even beyond the downtown in Scarborough and Etobicoke and North York. Because we now know: if there is a problem between bicycles and cars, bike lanes are a great solution.

Suburban councillors lead by delaying For some Toronto politicians, kicking a problem down the road instead of facing it is a good strategy. Soon, you’ll see them try it again. Rooming houses, any rooming house, are illegal in Scarborough, North York and north Etobicoke. The city is proposing licensing them in parts of those neighborhoods - providing a legal, low-cost option for housing tenants elsewhere in Toronto already have. Local councillors know their residents - at least those whose faces they see at public meetings - hate the idea. But those councillors suspect they can’t win if this goes to court. As Chin Lee from Scarborough put it recently, there’s a housing

"I do know of many who drive BMWs, Porshes, but they’re not willing to spend money on housing," he told constituents at a meeting. after encouraging them to speak against the proposal at council’s Executive Committee. Kenneth Hale of the Advocacy Centre for Tenants believes some of these local politicians are exploiting fear. Rooming houses are something they can take a ferocious stand on, he says. But while rallying their anxious homeowners, they aren’t offering up other solutions for affordable housing in neighborhoods where it’s badly needed, or suggesting where thousands of students enrolled at the city’s

If it’s clear suburban rooming houses are stuck in a "consultation loop," says Hale, ACTO will push to have a Ontario Municipal Board hearing, arguing outlawing rooming houses in North York, Scarborough or Etobicoke infringes on Ontario’s Human Rights Code and Canada’s Charter. prawling parklands and pristine shopping centres. Road hockey games and ballet lessons. Parking lot dances and strip mall celebrations. A new photo exhibit at the Toronto Archives is examining life in the city’s post-war suburbs, transporting visitors back to a transformational time in Toronto’s history when developers began sowing the seeds of complete communities on what was once farmland in North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough. "After the Second World War, Toronto had an incredible housing shortage. People were literally living in garages, multiple families were living communally. Then along came the suburbs, giving people the opportunity to own - and in some cases, build - their own homes," said Archivist Manda Vranic, curator of the Wide Open World: A Celebration of the Suburbs in Toronto exhibit. Featuring 133 photos from the late 1940s through to the 1980s, Vranic’s exhibit documents an era when Canada’s national ideal of "the good life" was transplanted from urban city centres to these newly developed suburban oases originally built for returning war veterans. In choosing to delve into the human side of suburbia rather than its built form, Vranic said the Wide Open World exhibit which will remain open to the public at the Toronto Archives until August 2018 - also challenges the "little boxes" critique of suburban living. "There’s been a lot of writing about the suburbs and a lot of it is critical of the infrastructure and there’s a lot of talk about conformity and car dependence and so on, but when you look at these pictures what you see is people having fun, building community and interacting with each other," Vranic said. "I really wanted to show the good side of the suburbs and how, in some ways, the promise of the suburbs has been fulfilled." lancers and amateurs, Vranic narrowed down some of her personal favourites among the 133 Wide Open World photo selections. In Etobicoke, the stand-out image for Vranic was a photo of two little girls taken in Queensway Park looking north to Uno

Drive in 1959. "One of the interesting things about it is, all of these homes still exist. They were built in the 1940s during the war for returning veterans, so they’re very early, wartime suburbs. It’s a unique style of architecture and you can see

the neighbourhood was planned around this big park, so that the moms could bring their kids out to play," she said. "When I found this photo, it was on a 35mm slide and it only showed one little girl. When we took the slide cover off to scan it, low and behold, we discov-

ered the second girl looking into camera. It was like a little Easter egg, which is just delightful." In North York, it was a series of hockey photos from the 1960s and ’70s that caught Vranic’s eye - from a 1962 picture of dozens of youth enjoying the outdoor hockey rink at Goulding Park, to a 1969 image of half a dozen youngsters crowded onto the double-wide driveway at 142 Faywood Blvd. for a pickup game, to a photo of roadhockey enthusiasts braving the slush outside a North York housing complex in 1972. "While we don’t know all that much about each individual photo, together they represent three different forms of Canada’s favourite pastime," she said. Amongst the noteworthy Scarborough images in the Wide Open World exhibit, Vranic highlighted a photo taken by photographer John H. Boyd on July 21, 1951 to accompany a Globe and Mail article about couples building their own homes. Police wouldn’t confirm media reports that the group targeted was the family of 16-year-old Zakariye Ali, who was shot dead around 11:40 p.m. Oct. 8 at 1

York Rd. near Dixon Road and Islington Avenue in Etobicoke. Two other men, ages 18 and 19, were shot and wounded. Last Friday’s shooting happened at 1:22 a.m. in a parking lot on Morecambe Gate northeast of Finch and Victoria Park avenues. According to police, four to five shots were fired at a group of people. Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said a 42-year-old woman was injured from "falling to

the ground during the gunfire." The woman was not struck by a bullet and was treated for minor injuries. "No victims appeared to be hit by gunfire, and 42 Division and guns and gangs are investigating," Sidhu said. The shooter was last seen running northbound. There is no accurate description of the suspect, Sidhu said. Anyone with information is asked to call 42 Division police at 416-808-4200.

Prop maker picks up hardware DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke’s Mike Cameron loves to build a big battle suit, giant space rifles and other fun sci-fi devices, and the judges love him for it too. The 32-year-old professional interior designer who is also a cosplayer and prop maker returned from New York’s Comic Con earlier in October with more hardware than what he went with. At the Comic Con’s Eastern Championships of Cosplay he picked up a first-place award in the armour category and was runner up for the best in show award. Earlier this year, he also picked up a best in show award at Toronto’s Fan Expo. The Toronto born and raised prop maker has always been into sci-fi and into making things. About four years ago, he started going to various comic cons with his helmets and guns to network. His big break happened when he left Canada for Aus-

The case of the missing Richview school bell is closed. The Etobicoke Guardian has chronicled Toronto District School Board (TDSB) trustee Chris Glover’s quest to locate the bell, which he said vanished after Richview Junior School closed in 1981. After his father-in-law alerted him to a report published in The Guardian in March, Michael Duench wondered if the bell that sat atop his steel gazebo in his backyard was in fact the long-lost 1800sera bell. He and his family moved into their home at Kipling and Eglinton avenues in August 2016, and were cleaning up the house when they decided to scrap the gazebo. "We actually had this solid metal structure cut down in addition to other metal and this was in the pile to go to the scrapper," he said. "Kind of in the last moment, I decided to keep the bell, not seeing if there was any value but it was kind of interesting." He added his father refurbished it and they planned to use it as a dinner bell for his kids, but after reading the story, they decided to reach out to Glover. He had it was inspected by several people, including the TDSB’s archivist, who said Duench’s bell might be the one. "There’s no cast markings on it, so we can’t tell for sure," Glover said. "But we did some research on what kind of bells would have been in schools at the time and it seemed to fit. Another community member sent us the picture of the bell when it was in the courtyard, and the way it was mounted seemed to fit ... it looks like it could be the bell." On Tuesday, Duench donated it to Rich-

view Collegiate Institute. It and a plaque will be displayed at the school at Islington and Eglinton avenues after it’s restored by manufacturers Soheil Mosun, Glover added. He started his search three years ago, and offered a $100 reward after reading a column on the history of five Richview schools in the Eglinton Avenue West and Martin Grove Road area penned for The Guardian in December 2016. They date back to 1838, when the first of five incarnations of Richview elementary school was first built out of logs, Denise Harris wrote at the time. It was followed by a second log school in 1846, a "little red schoolhouse" in 1874, a two-storey school in 1915 and then Richview Junior School in 1963. The bell, along with stone date plaques, were on display at the school but were nowhere to be found when the TDSB sold the building to the French Catholic school board in 2014. "It’s been kind of fun," Glover said of the search. "It’s like a scavenger hunt and to come up with the bell is phenomenal." Duench said he’s glad to donate the bell to the school. "My wife is a proud graduate (of Richview C.I.) and graduated with honours and had a great experience there," he said. "So for us to give it back to the community and specifically to the school is pretty cool."

Etobicoke’s Jennifer Landa, 30, is getting help from her local hair salon to raise funds for a cause near and dear to her. The young woman is raising funds to support care and research at the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital where she has been treated for the past few years. Landa was diagnosed with aggressive stage 3 breast cancer in June 2014 at the age of 26. She was given the clear in early 2015, but by August 2016 the cancer had returned. It spread to her sternum, right rib cage, spine and right pelvis. Then, in early October, she began to experience unusual tremors in her left arm and leg. An MRI revealed 10 tumours in her brain, and she learned she had just months left to live, according to the Sinai

The Bloor line stop now has an elevator along with a new entrance at Strathmore Boulevard. As part of the work, Woodbine’s bus loop was re-paved and better lighting was added, along with updated signage and bike parking. Woodbine is the TTC’s 37th station to become fully accessible. There’s still a long way to go to make every station accessible in time for a 2025 provincial deadline. STREETCAR DELAY AFFECTING BUSES Bombardier’s inability to deliver new streetcars is starting to impact bus service. At a board meeting Tuesday, TTC officials relayed the increasing pressure it faces with ancient streetcars regularly breaking down and few able replacements to rely on. 141 rickety streetcars, some dating back 40 years, remain in service compared to just 46 of the sleek new vehicles. That means buses increasingly need to replace broken down vehicles- putting strain on the entire fleet. The TTC expects to free up more buses with better maintenance and the com-

UBER IMPACTS TRANSIT? A widely reported academic study has uncovered a possible link between ridehailing services and sagging public transit ridership. In a survey of respondents from seven major U.S. cities, researchers from the University of California, Davis found nearly one quarter use UberX and Lyft and similar services at least once a week. That’s seemingly at the expense of public transit, with a net six per cent reduction in transit use. That said, the report finds commuter rail use rose slightly, suggesting ride-hailing is complementary to "last mile" travel to

and from a transit station. BLOOR BIKE/PEDESTRIAN CONFLICTS Cycling safety increased considerably thanks to the Bloor bike lanes, but so have incidents between cyclists and pedestrians. While altercations between cyclists and motorists dropped 61 per cent, activists are alarmed by a commensurate increase for pedestrians caused by midblock crossings and higher volumes of cyclists on Bloor. Regardless, 86 per cent of surveyed pedestrians say the lanes have improved or remained the same when it comes to road safety. Notice of Completion GO Rail Network Electrification Transit Project Assessment Process Metrolinx and Hydro One, as co-proponents, have completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the GO Rail Network Electrification Project. The Project As part of Regional Express Rail, Metrolinx is proposing to electrify GO-owned corridors. Athlete of the Month The Mavericks water polo squad is gaining momentum and popularity with youth of Etobicoke. The team practices out of the Etobicoke Olympium. Ciara has been playing for the past two years and her team placed 1st at the provincials and 3rd at the nationals this year. This is the first time in ten years that a Maverickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team has been on the podium at the respective tournaments. As previously mentioned, Ciara has only played water polo for the past two years and has won team awards for most improved and one for leadership. Ciara is a student at John English Middle School in south Etobicoke. She has participated in many school sports which include football, basketball, cross country and volleyball. Along with participating in these sports she is a member of the Eco school committee, ensuring that John English and surrounding community are clean and ecofriendly. Ciara also sings in the Mimico childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s choir and has been a member for eight years. Ciaraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s instructor, Jennifer Robinson

entered her into the Davenport singing festival, where she placed third. Ciaraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s singing prowess has also been showcased at two musical productions at John English school The Lion King and Once on this Island Junior. Ciara is absolutely thrilled to be named Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame athlete of the month. She goes on to say that she enjoys trying new sports and even quoted Albert Einstein, saying "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving." "Ciara is a dedicated athlete who trains very hard. Water polo is physically demanding and her commitment to the sport and to her team is undeniable. She has a great outlook and attitude and clearly enjoys what she does" says Joanne Noble, president & chair of the Board of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. The Queens Avenue couple invites their neighbours who live between Royal York Road and Burlington Street and Lake Shore Boulevard West and the railway tracks to also host a yard sale that day. All participating yard sales’ proceeds will be donated to Reach for the Rainbow, a non-for-profit organization that integrates children and youth with disabilities through overnight, day and community recreation programs across Ontario. "We’re asking people to pitch in for the kids," Michael Majeski said. "We’re asking people to hold a yard sale at their house, and bring the proceeds, whether it’s $2 or $200, to give to Reach for the Rainbow." The Majeskis will hold their own yard sale, as well as a parent/caregiver-supervised pumpkin-carving station and face painting

Couple invites neighbours to host charity yard sale

Majeski worked with special needs children in high school, and recently attended a Reach for the Rainbow fundraiser. The couple recently moved to the Mimico Triangle neighbourhood

where they’ve been renovating their home. The Halloween charity yard sale is a way to celebrate their community, and to give back, Majeski said. "We’re welcoming ourselves to the community," he said. "Instead of throwing a big party, we thought, ’let’s do something to involve the kids.’ Let’s involve kids in the day-to-day life that all of us take for granted, like sports and overnight camps." This Saturday, the Majeskis and some volunteers will again distribute 300 flyers door-to-door to publicize their Oct. 28 yard sale benefiting Reach for the Rainbow.
