Contrary to popular belief, Run Ze Cao doesn’t spend every waking moment buried in textbooks. The Martingrove Collegiate Institute student has been named one of the top two Toronto District School Board scholars of the year, tying with North York’s Sean Goldhar with a mind boggling 99.7 per cent average. “I was in Singapore (competing in the International Biology Olympiad) when my report card arrived at my house so I found out when I got home,” the 18-year-old Etobicoke resident said. “I was like, ‘oh, OK’.” While not completely dismissing his academic achievement, Cao was more enthused about the medals he received over the past two years from the International Biology Olympiad and the International Chemistry Olympiad. “These are the nerd Olympics,” he said with a smile. Cao took seven courses this year, six of which counted toward his average. Though he couldn’t remember what his marks were in specific subjects, he knew he scored 100 per cent in four and 99 per cent in two. His full course load was made up of Advanced Placement (AP) calculus and vectors, AP functions, AP chemistry, AP biology, physics, English and data management. Asked if he spends a lot of time hitting the books, Cao said the >>>RUN ZE CAO, page 5

Flamingo flockings help to offset fees Girls softball league to continue fundraiser in community through autumn TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Fiona and her flamingo friends’ front lawn flocking has captured some $500 to help the Etobicoke Girls Softball League absorb recently reduced city sports field fees being introduced next year. The wooden Fiona and her 10 pink flamingoes pop up on unsuspecting homeowners’ front yards under cover of night complete with an explanatory letter in their mailbox. For a donation, homeowners
can choose a friend’s house for Fiona and the flamingoes’ next flocking. The campaign is expected to continue through autumn. “Fiona is still making the rounds,” said Wanda Benedek, a longtime assistant coach with the league. “We’re still getting a positive response. We’re hoping it keeps going. A lot of people are talking about her. We hear them out in the park (while playing softball games).” Benedek pitched the unique fundraiser to the league’s execu-

tive after reading online about its success in the United States. Since it began, no flocked homeowner has donated less than $20. Before its summer break, Toronto City Council reduced the fees being introduced next year for the use of currently free city sports fields by youth leagues. In June, Mayor Rob Ford’s executive committee approved fees for 2013: $6 per hour, $4 per hour and $2 per hour depending on the size of the field, down from the $12, $8 and $6 originally proposed.
Council cancelled fees initially set to be charged this year after a public outcry from league organizers who said it came without warning after they set their membership fees for the year. Etobicoke Girls Softball League learned it would have cost its 125player organization nearly $10,000 in playing field permit fees this year. The league’s registration for its 10 teams is $180 a season for younger players, $200 for older players. “There will be a lot of people >>>LEAGUE, page 5
