FREE TO MOVE West Niles reaches its height in T.O. Toronto Public Health is reporting the highest number of reported human West Nile virus (WNV) cases in the city in the past decade, and expects the number to rise in coming weeks, according to a release issued earlier this week.

“Forty-six human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported to Toronto Public Health this summer,” Dr. David McKeown, Toronto’s medical officer of health, said in a release.

“While most people infected with WNV will recover, the virus can have serious health impacts – especially for seniors and those with compromised immune systems. In rare cases it can be fatal. I urge everyone to take precautions to avoid being infected with the virus.”

In 2002 and 2003 Toronto Public Health reported 163 and 44 cases, respectively.

Toronto Public Health continues to take proactive measures to reduce WNV risk: Toronto Public Health has 43 mosquito traps around the city and tests mosquitoes for WNV on a weekly basis.

Toronto Lands Corporation’s (TLC) manager of real estate, Donna Jondreau confirmed the sale of the southern-most 8.5 acres portion of

Alderwood C.I.’s 14.1 acre site to Urbancorp on Thursday, a day after the sale was finalized.

Choir for lovers of song comes to Etobicoke No training, no experience required, just a love of singing TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Standing before hundreds in the scorching August heat at the Canadian National Exhibition to sing a medley of classics could strike performance anxiety in almost anyone.

Yet 56 My Pop Choir members did exactly that in four flash mobs last Sunday afternoon, as they raised their mostly musically untrained voices in three-part harmony to sing I Can See Clearly Now, Under the Boardwalk and Lean on Me. Indeed, that’s what My Pop Choir is all about. It’s a community-based choir for people who love to sing, but who have no musical training and no experience. There are no auditions, no solos. All that’s required is a love of singing. “‘You’re amazing people,’ I told them,” Curtis said of the Ex perfor-

mance. “Most of them have never sung in a choir or sung harmony before. Here they are in front of 400 people in the screaming heat with no acoustics, just going for it. I just want to hug every one of them.”

Next month, Etobicoke residents who love to sing can join the latest My Pop Choir based out of Islington United Church in central Etobicoke.

Curtis herself has no musical training. In fact, she is only just learning to read music. But she has a great love of singing. Her father was a

professional singer, her mother a professional dancer.

When My Pop Choir started up in Curtis’s hometown of Oakville last fall, it drew 44 members to what Curtis describes as a “safe and comfortable” environment for singing.

Three months later, the Oakville choir volunteered to perform on Breakfast Television.

“It turned into something I didn’t expect,” Curtis said. “It increases people’s confidence. It creates energy. It enables people to leave their stress at the door. Singing together is power-

ful. It creates a sense of community.

One voice may not sound great. But when you combine that voice with the voices of all the other people, it sounds great. It feeds the soul.”

The popularity of Oakville’s My Pop Choir grew by word-of-mouth and compelled Curtis to add six new locations that all opened in January: one in Port Credit, one in Ancaster, one in Georgetown, one in Aurora, one in Lawrence Park and one in The Beach.

10-session terms starting on Sept.

13. Choir sessions run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays at Islington United Church, 25 Burnhamthorpe Rd. north of Dundas Street West.

Anyone interested may attend the first two My Pop Choir sessions Sept. 13 and 20, called “pop-ins”, before making a decision to join and register on the website.

Each choir is conducted by an experienced choir master who teaches songs in harmony from the world of pop, rock, R&B and soul.

“Our choir masters come from the world of musical theatre. They know this music. They love it. They themselves are great singers, strong musicians. That element of performance experience brings to My Pop Choir a joy and lightness and ease and comfort that doesn’t necessarily exist in more formal choirs.”

My Pop Choir members range in age from 35 to 70. Their median age is 45. About 80 per cent of them are women.

“This is the most joyful thing I’ve ever been a part of,” Curtis said. “It has been life-changing for me, too...I love it. I can’t imagine not doing this.

Catholic trustees discuss continuation of HPV program CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Students’ physical health versus their spiritual and moral well-being was debated amongst Toronto’s Catholic trustees Tuesday, as the board squared off on whether or not to continue its human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) program.

The publicly funded Gardasil vaccination program has seen all Grade 8 girls in the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) given the opportunity to be vaccinated against HPV – a sexually transmitted disease cited as the cause of more than 70 per cent of cervical cancers and 90 per cent of genital warts in Canada – since September 2007.

The future of the program, however, was called into question at the meeting as a handful of trustees raised doubts as to Gardasil’s

safety, and as to whether or not its administration to 13- and 14-year-old girls runs contrary to the teachings of the Catholic church by promoting premarital sex.

“I’ve had a problem with the fact that we’ve been doing this through our schools ever since it first came up,” said Toronto Trustee Barbara Poplawski. “It’s medical, it’s not something that something the Catholic Bishops of Ontario have supported, and it’s not something that I’m comfortable with.”

A letter from the Assembly of Catholic Bishops regarding the Gardasil vaccine cautions parents that infection with HPV can only occur through sexual activity, which itself carries “profound risks to a young person’s spiritual, emotional, moral and physical health.”

“Sexual activity is appropriate only within marriage,” the letter reads.

‘I don’t believe the administration of the vaccine is a prerequisite or leads to what has been insinuated as a promotion of sexual activity amongst our teens...’

Trustee Peter Jakovcic “Outside of marriage, abstinence is not only clearly the choice that leads to spiritual and moral well-being, but it is obviously the best protection against risks of the disease.”

Also at issue, Poplawski argued, is whether or not the board is doing a good enough job fully informing

parents of the risks involved with Gardasil.

While an information package sent to parents about the vaccination includes literature from Toronto Public Health that details both the drug’s common and more uncommon side effects – ranging from itchiness and swelling at the injection site, to vomiting and diarrhea, to difficulty breathing – Poplawski said the warnings don’t go far enough.

Etobicoke Trustee and Board Chair Ann Andrachuk defended the program, stating its importance as a free service to families who might not otherwise be able to afford such protection for their daughters – potential side effects or not.

“These are the chances we take because the drugs are there. We’ve heard in the past that a lot of parents decided not to immunize their children when they were young because

of rumours they caused autism,” she said. “Then we ended up with children with whooping cough, and others with mumps and measles, and they got really sick and there was brain damage caused by high fevers and things – all because someone (falsely) told them getting vaccinated would cause autism.”

Etobicoke Trustee Peter Jakovcic argued Grade 8 is a “critical” time for the HPV vaccination.

“I think the purpose of the age of 13/14 is that it is a critical age, considering puberty and the nature of adolescence – and the fact that there are certain things we can’t control,” he said. “I don’t believe the administration of the vaccine is a prerequisite or leads to what has been insinuated as a promotion of sexual activity amongst our teens.

I think it’s in due course with other medical practices that we have.”

During several community meetings over the last year, local residents expressed their desire to see the site remain a school. But that dream was dashed back in January, when Toronto’s French Catholic school board – the only public entity to bid on the site – rescinded its conditional offer to purchase the school, citing the estimated price tag of $7 million to bring the dilapidated building back up to code.

After the French Catholic board deal went sour, the Alderwood C.I. site was listed on the open market.

Urbancorp – which remained an anonymous bidder until this week – submitted its conditional offer in May. At that time, EtobicokeLakeshore Trustee Pamela Gough spoke to her optimism that the TLC had found the best fit for the community – and that the bidding developer had expressed tentative plans to build single-family homes on the Alderwood C.I. site.

“From the sounds of it, it’s a developer that’s worked very well in the community, is very community-minded and very cognizant of the intentions and the interests of the community,” she told The Guardian back in May.

abour Day marks the end of summer for most people – in particular those with school-aged children.

School supplies are being purchased, vacations have been taken, daycare has been set up, and everyone is getting back to their daily business.

Let’s make this school year one where learning is truly an experience, where students – as well as parents and teachers – do more than just study.

Let’s see classes become increasingly active in making their communities a better place.

Schools – separate, public, private and French – are the heart of any community, where our youngest members learn how to become active and connected parts of their school, neighbourhoods, and to a greater extent, the entire city.

Beyond learning about those our view less-fortunate, or issues in society that need fixing, students should Great lessons be taught social responsibility.

And what better ways to do just in community that than by participating in participation fundraisers, school events, or helping clean a park?

Every corner of the city sees students taking part in activities that directly impact their fellow students and the city as a whole: Summit Heights Public School students in North York became the proud parents of an African penguin after raising the necessary money. Scarborough’s Charlottetown Junior Public School students and staff helped raise $6,500 to build a clean water project in Haiti. For their efforts, they received an inspirational visit from Spencer West (who lost both his legs at the age of five) and his Redefine Possible mission. And this past June, St. Leo Catholic School students in Etobicoke each completed three acts of kindness, in return national and international powerlifting champion Ryan “6-Pack” Lapadat returned during the school’s fundraising Spring Fling flipping a 2,000pound car to break a Guinness World Record and raise money for SickKids Hospital.

Students across the city have been honoured for their efforts helping others.

Schools as a whole have done their part when dealing with issues in their communities. And for this, all Torontonians should be grateful.

That’s why school should be more than just a place students go to bury their noses in books. It should be a place where students go to become active members of a community – whether that be the school community, their neighbourhood, or the city as a whole.

To the editor: Re: ‘Our police budget must be discussed in communities,’ Editorial, Aug. 17.

Your editorial is consistent with my conversations and meetings with the residents of Danzig Street.

Repeatedly, I have been told the local community wants a police “relationship”, not merely a police “presence”.

I know from the police perspective that there are “resource issues”; however, the present system is not working and is clearly unsatisfactory from a number of perspectives.

Relationships are, by definition, two way, but as you said in the editorial “frank discussions are needed”.

There is no better opportunity than budget time to have residents of the most affected communities have their say.

Otherwise, these crimes will remain unresolved, and the cycle of fear, distrust and violence will be perpetuated endlessly.

Etobicoke pilot dies pursuing love of flying

The Etobicoke man piloted a small, single-engine aircraft that crashed last Friday night in a cornfield near Moorefield, Ont. north of Kitchener.

The crash killed Misic, as well as his three passengers: Mohammed Shahnawaz Zia, 23; Wasay Rizwan, 27, both from Toronto, and Victoria Margaret Luk, 19, of Mississauga.

The group was scheduled to travel from Breslau, Ont. to Toronto and Niagara Falls, then back to Breslau.

It is unclear why the plane plummeted from the sky when the Ontario Provincial Police discovered it around 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 24.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

Etobicoke’s Marko Misic died on Friday night when the small plane he was piloting plummeted into a cornfield near Kitchener.

Misic became a successful pilot at a young age. He joined Etobicoke’s 142 Mimico, Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron as a boy and earned his first pilot’s licence at 16. He later earned his commercial pilot’s licence.

Misic’s passion for flying inspired his younger sister, Josipa, 18, to follow him in

the Mimico air cadets squadron.

Last month, The Etobicoke Guardian profiled Josipa Misic’s first solo flight in a feature article.

She spent this summer on an elite seven-week private pilot scholarship training course.

“I didn’t even know about air cadets until he was in it,” Josipa Misic had said of Marko.

“I didn’t want to join. I didn’t think it was my thing, like for a girl. Then he took me up. I also have my glider’s licence.

He took me up in my glider.

Once I got my glider’s licence, I said I wanted to get my pilot’s licence, too.”

The OTB will combine the Ontario Sales Tax Credit, the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, and the Northern Ontario Energy Credit. September is here! This means back to school for thousands of kids!

There is certainly a lot of organization and preparation that goes on at this time of year, so we’ve given you five ways to green your back to school routine and head back to class in an eco-friendly way.

You’ll save some energy and money while making our world a better place to live in!

REUSE Re-use your backpack and lunch box from last year.

There’s no need to spend money on new items and create waste when your existing ones still have use. Same with supplies.

Go through your school bags from last year and reuse everything you can. When buying, go for recycled paper products (notebooks, printer paper, agendas) whenever possible. Earth friendly pens and pencils are also getting easier to find.

Get on an email list. Ask your school to e-mail newsletters. Get parents to volunteer to create the email list if the school has not already done so. You get enough paper from the school as it is! This would save the school time, effort and money.

GREEN TRANSPORTATION If you live close to school consider walking or riding bicycles to minimize on driving. Getting out in the fresh air is a great way to wake up little brains and get the blood pumping before classes start.

Review safety rules beforehand, including a planned route and using bicycle helmets.

For those that live further away, taking the school bus is greener than individual driving.

PACK A LITTER-LESS LUNCH! There are tons of options to choose from these days which

help cut down on the use of plastic wraps and baggies, tetra juice boxes and plastic utensils. Make sure everything in the lunchbox is re-usable and does not need to be thrown out.

BE A WATCHFUL CONSUMER. Yes it’s tempting to run out now and buy all your back to school clothes and gear but consider purchases before you make them and think about waiting a few weeks to see what items are really needed.

Before the end of September, retailers will put clothing and other items on sale to make room for all the winter stuff and that means sales and big savings for you!

Save time, money and the environment – and maybe even learn a lesson about conservation and economics before the school bell rings!

After-care options for dual-income families In a perfect world, school and work hours would run concurrently. But the average school day begins at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 3:00 p.m., while the average work day lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

As a result, parents must arrange for child care during those hours when school is out, but Mom and Dad are still at work.

Today, roughly 80 per cent of families in North America have

both parents working, and many find it is impossible to live on one income.

Dual-income families often have to make difficult choices about child care. If a mother returned to work shortly after giving birth, day care was probably arranged early on.

As children grow and attend elementary school, traditional day care is usually not an option and parents have to make other arrangements.

Some children are enrolled in care centers that watch children before school, bus them to school and then return in the afternoon to pick up the children again. This is one of the more costly options in child care. However, it may be more educationally structured than the care programs provided at school.

• What is the turn-over rate of staff?

• Is there a nurse available?

• Who oversees the program?

• Is busing available?

• How are emergencies handled?

• How is poor behavior handled?

• May I visit the program for a check-in?

• With whom do Ispeak if I have a problem?

• If my child is absent, do Ireceive a refund for that day?

• How long is the waiting list?

These are just some of the questions to ask, and parents are encouraged to come up with their own to find the best program for their children.

Keep your child’s lunch peanut-free It's back to school time again!

Aside from buying new clothes and school supplies, you may want to consider what to pack for your kids' lunches and snacks - just make sure it's peanut-free!

These days it's not uncommon for schools to completely ban peanuts and peanut products.
