Etobicoke teen Jesse Sukunda loves video games and he loves acting – so when his agent asked him if he wanted to audition for a new Disney XD show that would combine both passions, it was a no-brainer. “It’s pretty crazy. It’s not everyday that, me being a 13-year-old boy, I get to star on a show where I play video games and get to meet celebrities and stuff like that,” the young Richmond Gardens area resident said of landing a starring gig on Gaming Show (In My Parents’ Garage). “It’s livin’ the dream.” Filmed in Toronto, the innovative news-style show premiered on Disney XD last month and follows Jesse and fellow real-life video game addicts and aspiring YouTubers Julia Schwartz and Ian Duchene as a “trio of quirky young teens” who hang out, debate the virtues of video games and film field segments – all out of Jesse’s “tricked out” fictional garage. While his same-named character is a lot more “naturally awkward” than he is, Jesse said he and his on-screen alter-ego share an enthusiasm for video games that plays out on the Gaming Show (In My Parents’ >>>perks, page 17

A love story defined by a life of photography The Howards celebrate 64 years of marriage CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com It comes as no surprise that the walls at John and Joan Howard’s home abound with family portraits – afterall, the south Etobicoke couple, who celebrated their 64th anniversary this week, spent 50 years of their near picture-perfect marriage running a photography studio together. High school sweethearts, the Swansea-native pair met while both were students at Runnymede Collegiate Institute and, from that day forward, had eyes only for each other. “John was in Grade 13 and I was in Grade 10 when we met, and we’ve been together ever since,” Joan explained during a sit-down interview with The Guardian in the couple’s south Etobicoke home. It wasn’t long after Joan graduated, in fact, that the pair got married at St. James Presbyterian Church on Dec. 16, 1950. The wedding portrait of the beaming bride, just 18, and her proud, 20-year-old groom is one of a multitude of family photos (including childhood pictures of the couple’s brood of four: Jimmy, Johnny, Judy and Janice) adorning the Howards’ walls and shelves – and perhaps one of only a few not taken by John himself. A keen photographer since high school, John went straight to work after graduation for Kodak, where he put in five years – even writing a book for the company

– before trying his hand at commercial photography at a downtown studio. “One day, John went in and asked for a raise, and the guy said to him ‘You know more about photography than I do. Go open your own studio.’ So, we did,” Joan said with a laugh. Howard Photographic Studio opened in Etobicoke in 1954 on Westglen Crescent, where the Howards’ services ranged from portraits, wedding photography and school photos, to construction and commercial photography. “We enjoyed it,” John said. “It was a good life, and we made a hell of a good living doing it.” The crowning achievement of his career as a photographer, John said, came with being chosen to photograph the Queen at the grand open-

ing of the Scarborough Civic Centre in 1973. Looking back, Joan said her and John’s photography business not only provided their family with a great living, but also allowed them to live a great life – from adventurous outings like Joan’s first ride in a bush plane while accompanying her husband to photograph the mines of Temiscamie in northern Quebec, to capturing the toothless grins of countless Etobicoke schoolchildren in their class photos over the years. The key to their happy 64-year marriage, the Howards agreed, was that they never let a spat brew overnight and they never allowed a day to go by without exchanging ‘I love yous.’

Let’s all make volunteering our resolution L

et’s make next year a banner year in Toronto for volunteering in the community. With 2015 almost upon us, it seems like a good time to issue this call. There’s still a little bit left in 2014 to ponder goals and expectations for the coming year – and perhaps include some time to give to a cause or organization of importance to you. Also, 2015 is a big year in Toronto. The Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games are coming to the city in July. It’s Canada’s largest multi-sport event. There are opportunities both before and during the Games, which will rely on some 23,000 volunteers to ensure things run smoothly. Visit the Pan Am Games website for more information. And Toronto is a city known for its diverse offerings of festivals and events. The city’s special events office our view regularly lists volunteer opporand is a good place to What can you tunities start for those who can commit do to help your their time to a specific event – as opposed to a more regular community? volunteer experience. But volunteering is not just about what’s good for a cause, an organization or the city. It’s about what’s good for us, too. When it comes to the positive developments that arise from volunteering, it is not merely a ‘one-way’ street. Volunteer opportunities represent more than just a chance to get involved in your community and help out. In many cases, volunteers acquire new skills and contacts during the course of their work. Volunteers acquire intangible benefits, too: a richer experience of life in the city and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts are helping your community. When we think about what kind of environment we want to live in, what improvements we want in our neighbourhoods and what connections we want to forge in our community, volunteering helps in all of those areas. William Osler Health Centre recently honoured seven of its volunteers who had compiled a staggering 50 years each of volunteering with its hospitals, including Etobicoke General. Let’s see what we can do in one year. Calls for volunteering – the ultimate commitment to our community – are all around us. Let’s answer the call – in greater numbers than ever.

column

Is this another chapter in library saga with budget submission? I

t’s too soon to be able to map out where all the political fights will be in the coming winter’s city hall budget process. But the Toronto Public Library Board has thrown down the gauntlet for the first big one. This shouldn’t be a surprise. There is something about our library system in this city that attracts duelling city councillors like nothing else. Last term, former budget chief Mike Del Grande instigated a minor skirmish when he wondered why so many DVDs and books were circulated in languages other than English. The same term, former budget committee vicechair Doug Ford made headlines by inventing the term lie-berry and disrespecting author Margaret Atwood, as he suggested

david nickle the city closing a library in his ward to save some money. That was a Potemkin moment for bibliophiles across the city to rise up and support their libraries. This time, the membership of the library board (most of whom were appointed under the Ford administration) is setting up for a fight that lands somewhere in between. In their 2015 budget submission, they’ve elected to include a 40 per cent reduction in security service in branches across the city. The move would save $660,000 from the budget, bringing its submission down to a two per cent increase over last year. It

would mean that in some branches, there would no longer be a security guard present. Board chair Mike Foderick maintains those branches don’t need a security guard, given their historic low level of incidents over the past number of years. For instance, at the Centennial branch, the security guard worked 27 hours a week in 2013, and over that year dealt with only a single incident. Perhaps there will be some library patrons comforted by that statistic. But it’s hard to imagine very many who send their children to libraries to study or their elderly parents there to read and socialize will be at all comfortable taking a chance on safety. The union representing library workers (which doesn’t, incidentally, represent the security

guards) has already taken a stand on the issue, as a matter of workplace safety. If I were a betting columnist, I’d say that by the time this works its way through the budget process at city hall – and long before the budget actually makes it to the floor of council – there won’t be any change in the library system’s security complement. One doesn’t know why the library board didn’t save councillors the trouble and just leave matters be. For a service that a majority of Torontonians seem to regard as untouchable, it’s astounding politicians of certain stripes can’t seem to keep their hands off it. Some Etobicoke GO Train riders will get extra train service in the new year. GO Transit is adding a train to the morning and afternoon peak periods that will serve all nine stations on its Milton line, including Kipling. It will add about 1,500 seats for customers. “(This) announcement is great news for GO Transit users on the Milton line and will make transit more accessible, convenient and easier to use for residents of Etobicoke-Lakeshore who utilize the Kipling station,” EtobicokeLakeshore MPP Peter Milczyn said in a statement. The new morning trip is scheduled to leave Kipling GO Station at 9:07 a.m. and arrive at Union Station at 9:30 a.m. The new evening trip

will leave Union Station at 3:40 p.m. and arrive at Kipling at 3:56 p.m. The added trips are intended to ease crowding on the Milton line, which GO Transit estimates accommodates about 30,000 boardings each weekday. Visit www.gotransit.com for full train schedules

Half century of volunteering honoured at William Osler Health Centre

Volunteers receive pins and plaques for decades of service at Etobicoke General Hospital CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com William Osler Health System recently honoured seven of its most dedicated volunteers for their half century of service. At a special ceremony last month, Olive Clark, Amy Jordan, Ruth Jefferies, Arleen Furgala, Joan Jamieson, Phyllis Brown, and the late Maggie Leigh each received 50-year pins and plaques for their many years of selfless voluntarism. “I’m blown away by these ladies, I really am,” said William Osler’s director of Equity and Volunteer Services Gurwinder Gill. “I couldn’t imagine giving so much of one’s time for so long to one organization. It’s just unbelievable.” Like all of Osler’s 1,000+ volunteers, the seven women recently honoured for their long service, Gill added, have fulfilled many roles at both Osler’s Etobicoke General and Brampton Civic hospitals over the years – from providing comfort to patients in day surgery areas, providing wayfinding services to patients and visitors, working in the gift shop, and helping to raise funds for the hospital, among others. Clark began volunteering for EGH before the hospital was even built, by assisting in its fundraising campaigns. A native of London, England, Clark moved to Toronto in 1957 and soon began seeking out ways to engage with her new community. “I hadn’t been in the country that long and I wanted to get involved in something in the community. I was a stayat-home mother at the time, and volunteering enabled me to get involved in something when my girls were in school,” she said. And involved she was. Over the course of Clark’s 50 years of service to EGH, she’s been involved with

Volunteering in the emergency room for many years, she said, was the most rewarding of her roles, although these days she spends all of her volunteer time – about 20 hours a month – working at the information desk in EGH’s lobby area. There, her role is to greet visitors and

patients, provide information and offer assistance, escort and provide wayfinding support to all areas of the hospital, replenish wheelchairs, keep the waiting area tidy, and assist with patient registration. “It means meeting a lot of people, which is what I like,” Clark said of her current role. “I’ve made so many friends among the staff and other volunteers at EGH. I would most definitely recommend volunteering – it enlarges your life.” A volunteer since she was a girl of 16, Jordan worked at the YMCA canteen in Liverpool, where she continued volunteering until she moved to Canada as a war bride in 1946. Here in Toronto, she continued her acts of good will by volunteering at her church, for a children’s nursery, and what is now the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

It’s a wonderful experience to be a volunteer in a hospital, because there’s so many different circumstances that you meet up and different people, and it’s all been very interesting. – Amy Jordan

(CAMH), before signing up for the newly forming EGH auxiliary. “I thought that would be interesting so I joined that right at the beginning,” said Jordan, noting that she even served as president for a few years. “I think I worked in every department at EGH where they had volunteers over the years – and I enjoyed every one. It’s a wonderful experi-

ence to be a volunteer in a hospital, because there’s so many different circumstances that you meet up and different people, and it’s all been very interesting.” After volunteering in the recovery room for “quite a number of years”, Jordan now works in pre-admitting for EGH’s operating rooms once a week, where she assists with directing and wayfinding, greeting and welcoming visitors, checking in patients as they arrive for pre-admission to surgery, and assisting staff with office duties. Her years at EGH, she said, have taught her that “a smile goes a long way.” The other 50-year volunteer pin recipients included: n Ruth Jefferies, who is one of the original volunteers who saw the shovel in the ground for Etobicoke General Hospital and was there to see the opening. She provided tours for visitors and patients

in the new hospital. n Arleen Furgala, who served on the EGH Board of Governors from 1974-77, the Auxiliary Board of Directors from 1979-1991, and as Convenor of the Westway Branch in 1965. Her most recent placement was in the EGH gift shop as a flower arranger. n Joan Jamieson, who assists in the EGH gift shop. n Maggie Leigh, an EGH gift shop assistant, who received her pin posthumously. n Phyllis Brown, an active knitter who has given many years volunteering in the Brampton Civic gift shop helping with fundraising and working in Buds to make floral arrangements to sell in the shop. Dad and daughter team hoping for $40K in funds to cover cost of shuttle bus >>>from page 1 But that hasn’t put the brakes on Jessica and Derek Reid’s work, nor on the search for additional funding or a ‘white knight’ donor. This weekend, the pair plans to rent an additional van or two to take as many children as possible before Christmas to visit their dads in Warkworth medium-security prison in Campbellford, Ont. At present, the Reids are leasing their new $70,000, 25-seat airport-like shuttle bus for $1,000 a month. “It’s disappointing,” Derek Reid said of the contest. “But we’ve built strong relationships with Centennial College. I know the students and their professor will give us strong ideas for next year.” Recently, Centennial College community and justice services students, aided by their professor Shelley Upshaw, presented the Reids a $5,000 cheque from their It Takes a Village fundraising initiative for FEAT. Students built a FEAT

donation page at www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/featfor-children/ that has raised $4,550 to date. Centennial students also voted en masse for FEAT on the Aviva contest website. Every Saturday and Sunday at 7 a.m., the Reids and their bus leave Franklin Horner Community Centre in south Etobicoke for a 12-hour or

longer journey beginning at three family pickup locations, primarily Dufferin Street and Lawrence Avenue West and Markham Road and Progress Avenue, and also at York Mills subway station. The bus transports 50 mostly mothers and children each weekend, 2,500 people per year, sometimes as far as 200 kilometres. Trips to one of

six Kingston prisons cost $40; to Warkworth prison is $30. Otherwise, the run would cost well over $100, well out of reach of many families, Reid said. But the Reids aren’t dissuaded by funding challenges. Derek Reid said they have “many irons in the fire” to attract funding to pay the

outstanding $40,000 owed on their bus. A FEAT funding application is in to the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Reid continues to outreach to Rotary clubs “from Toronto to Kingston” to attract funding. A lawyer in Kingston is currently assessing an opportunity to make FEAT the recipient of a lawyers associa-

tion’s annual fall boat cruise fundraiser, Reid said. Jessica plans again to walk 270 kilometres from Toronto to Kingston to raise funds. Her recent walk over eight days raised about $16,000. Media coverage is also fueling donations. “Media attention is going to be key to more exposure, and hopefully, lead to a white knight or individuals as a whole donating to support the program,” Reid said. “People who will say, ‘I think this is a great idea. Let me help with the funding of it.’” The Etobicoke Guardian and its website, www.insidetoronto.com, have published articles on FEAT, as has the Toronto Star. However, the Reids remain focused on their work to help and support the children. “We’re trying to change the trajectory some of these kids could be on with their dads being incarcerated.”

Sharon United Church’s cemetery restored with the help fo volunteers T

he weather outside may have been frightful, but that didn’t keep members of this small church from braving the snow to share in the uplifting atmosphere of Sharon United Church on this particular Sunday in the 1940s. The story of Sharon United Church began about 1838 when English lay preacher William Hainstock and his wife Ann moved to Highfield, a hamlet on today’s Rexdale Boulevard, centering around Hwy. 27. By 1842 they had opened their home for church services led by itinerant pastors. About 1845, local Methodists built a log church on the north side of Rexdale Boulevard west of today’s Humberwood Boulevard, on a point-six acre piece of land donated by Richard Thomas. A cemetery soon developed west of the church. In 1856, a new brick church was built adjacent to the log chapel. It measured 26 by 36 feet, with a stone inscribed “Primitive Methodist Chapel 1856.”

denise harris history corner

The old log chapel was taken down for firewood in 1871. The church name was changed to Sharon Methodist Church in 1884, and then to Sharon United Church in 1925. By 1955, the congregation had dwindled considerably as a result of the sale of area farms to developers and to the New Woodbine Racetrack. The church was closed, and both the church building and its cemetery were placed under the care of Thistletown United Church. The Sharon United Church building was demolished in 1967, but the cemetery beside it remained. By the 21st century, Sharon Cemetery was in poor condition. With the efforts of many volunteers and public donations, the cemetery underwent a complete restoration between 2005 and 2008. The cemetery contains about 160 burials, and 75 grave markers were

found during the renovation, many of which were buried under a foot of soil. The oldest stone marks the grave of Mary Etherington who died in 1845; the most recent marker is for Mary Elizabeth Thomas who died in 1948. A new, central monument was erected listing the 57 families whose ancestors are buried there, including the names of many founding families such as Ackrow, Appleby, Codlin, Dutchburn, Gardhouse, Hainstock, Kellam, Mashinter, Moody, Peacock, Stonehouse and Thomas. This cemetery is the only surviving 19th century property from the pioneer community of Highfield and became a designated heritage site in 2012. Although a bit of a challenge to access the cemetery on foot, you are welcome to enter the cemetery through its south gate to explore.

Perks include filming field segments across North America >>>from page 1 Garage) through reviews on the latest video games, ‘How Do They Do That?’ moments courtesy of look-behindthe-scenes segments, and, perhaps most importantly, through head-to-head competitions against co-stars Julia and Ian. “It’s a lot of fun and we’re always going at it, especially at Mario Kart. Nothing feels better than beating Ian, but nothing feels worse than losing to Julia – although they both rub it in when I lose,” he said with a laugh. “We have scripts, but they’re mostly guidelines. If something doesn’t feel right, we’ll change it up and improvise right there on the spot, which is why it’s a lot of fun – it feels natural and it’s all real.” One of the biggest perks of being on the show, Jesse said, was all of the traveling he got to do while filming field segments – everywhere from Los Angeles and San Diego, to Vancouver, Seattle

and San Francisco. “I went to California to shoot a bunch of stuff, but one of my favourite, most memorable things that I’ve done was in San Francisco with Charles Martinet, who was actually the voice of Mario (from Super Mario Bros.),” he said. “He was such a great, really nice guy; filled with energy. I remember that day was just a lot of fun and it was one of the first field segments I ever shot.” interactive Fans of Gaming Show (In My Parents’ Garage) are invited to get in on the action at the show’s website at www.disneyxd.ca/gamingshow/ where they can help Jesse and the Gaming Show crew design the ultimate game with the Video Game Builder. “There, you get to build your own game, creating your own heroes and platforms and villains and all

that stuff,” he said, noting he has spent his “fair share of time” creating his own game, too.

“I love the artistic side of games,” he added, noting that Rayman Origins is one of his favourite games design-

wise. “It’s such a cool and different art-style-looking game, and that just kind of drew

me right to it. It’d be fun to design video games, but I also have a great time with acting. It’s a lot of fun to be someone else.” Jesse first started taking acting classes when he was in Grade 4, and has continued those studies since “just to stay sharp.” In addition to Gaming Show, he has also recently appeared in Lifetime’s Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B and YTV’s Extreme Babysitting. Gaming Show’s 10-episode first season airs every Sunday at 6 p.m. on Disney XD. Segments are also available on the show’s YouTube channel at http://bit. ly/1rB0AWj “It’s been great so far,” Jesse said of the Gaming Show experience. “It’s so much fun to film and I have a great time with everybody on set, so a second season would be great.” Read more local news onilne, find events and community information at etobicokeguardian.com

Priest describes violence against Christians at hands of ISIS Vicar of Baghdad tells Rexdale audience to pressure Canadian government for action in Iraq CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Child beheadings and ISIS death threats were part of the horrifying picture of the plight of Christians in Iraq painted by the Vicar of Baghdad last week during his visit to Etobicoke. The Rev. Canon Andrew White, 50, vicar of the only remaining Anglican church in Iraq, shared stories of the terror and anguish his congregants at St. George’s Church in Baghdad have been subjected to in recent days with about 50 people gathered at Rexdale Community Hub last Wednesday night. During the hour-and-a-halflong presentation organized by the Rexdale Community Legal Clinic, White – who fled Iraq back in October at the urging of his archbishop after repeated threats on his life by Islamic State terrorists – broke down in tears while relaying the story of one St. George’s family in

particular, who he claims paid the ultimate price for standing up for their faith. A few weeks ago, White said, a man called him in tears saying, “Aboona (a religious title meaning ‘father’), I don’t think Yesua (Jesus) loves me anymore.” “I asked him why, and he said ‘ISIS came to my house and they said ‘you’ve got a choice – say that you’ll follow Muhammad and Islam, or we will kill your children now’. He said, ‘Aboona, I couldn’t see my children killed, so I said I would follow Islam. But you know, Aboona, I love Yesua. I will never stop loving Yesua.’” In reply, White said he told the man that Jesus understood the situation he was in, and that he still loved him. “But the next day, the story got much worse. ISIS came back to the house, and they said ‘We’re not going to ask the father if he will follow Islam.

What is the fate of Christianity in Iraq? What is the future? The future is terrorism. – Rev. Canon Andrew White

“The children held each other’s hands and they said ‘We love Yesua. We always love Yesua. We will never stop loving Yesua.’ They were just little children, and they chopped their heads off.” That story, White said, is just one of many that prove Iraq is going through “one of the worst times ever” at the hands of ISIS, a group he said “is not Islamic, but terrorists.” “They are evil, evil, evil people,” he said, contrasting the terrorists to the many peaceful and caring Muslims he works with through St. George’s church, clinics and schools. “One of our dentists has taken on the job of look-

Today, we will ask the children: will you follow the Islamic way?’” White recounted of the story told to him, noting that the man’s four children, who were all reportedly under the age of 15, were then brought out to stand before the members of the terrorist group and asked to renounce their faith.

ing after all the Christians in the north. She has done an incredible job caring for the Christians, and she’s really suffered for it – and she’s a Muslim.” Ann McRae, director of legal services at Rexdale Community Legal Clinic, said when she heard White was going to be in Toronto for the baptism of his grandson, she jumped at the chance to have him come and speak. “We decided if Andrew was going to come – and he’s a well-known international peace speaker – we thought there would be a lot of interest from the community, because what do you hear more of on the news these days? The lead story is often Islamic State,” she said. “So we thought this story would be of interest to more than just the Iraqi community, but we knew it would be of great, great interest to the Iraqi community in Etobicoke, which is largely Christian.”

In the beginning, White said he urged those Christian who came to him seeking guidance to resist the urge to flee – but no more. “ What is the fate of Christianity in Iraq? What is the future? The future is terrorism. There is no real future. You can’t say that the Christians want to go back to their homes in the mountains and the cities. Rubbish,” he said, adding that leaving Baghdad himself was the hardest decision of his life. “We need to tell our government, even here in Canada, that we need their help,” White said. “Canada, like almost no other country, has an ambassador for religious freedom (Dr. Andrew Bennett), who really cares. There is hope. And you speaking here tonight, you need to meet and you need to organize.”

TTC investigating bus running red light A motorist’s dashcam video capturing a TTC bus running a red light in Scarborough has caused a stir since it was posted online. This week, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross promised a full investigation into the incident, which took place the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 13. The video shows a TTC bus traveling eastbound on Eglinton Avenue East pass right through the intersection at Warden Avenue, after the light has turned red. Ross said the video, which has been viewed over 6,000 times since it was posted on YouTube, could lead to disciplinary measures. pUSH ON TO INSTALL PRESTO ACROSS TTC Include the mayor in a vocal group of influential types seeking more Presto on the TTC. Debit, credit card payment options coming to the TTC RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com TTC riders, no matter what station they’re in, will finally have the opportunity to buy tokens and tickets using debit or credit cards. That’s the pledge made by TTC chair Josh Colle who announced Tuesday morning, all station fare collectors across the system will accept expanded payment methods for purchases of 10 or more tickets and tokens as well as day passes beginning in the new year. While most transit systems in the world have long accepted a variety of payment methods, Colle said the switch was a “long time coming”, and necessary for continuing work to integrate the TTC with the Presto electronic fare system. “We’re finally getting to a place we should be, and it’s

important to recognize this bridges us to Presto,” said Colle, who was accompanied by Mayor John Tory and TTC CEO Andy Byford during the announcement which was made inside Victoria Park Station. “We have to make an urgent push to make sure we have that technology in the system sooner than later.” Tory agreed, pointing out when it comes to offering up-to-date payment options the City of Toronto trails far behind other jurisdictions. “This city is two generations behind other cities, and even the private sector within the city, in terms of using technology to make people’s lives easier and more convenient,” he said. TTC riders have had the option to use debit or credit to buy a monthly or weekly Metropass since late 2012. Colle said having more ways to pay fares would also

improve safety with TTC staff no longer needing to accept as large amount of cash to handle payments. Expanding fare payment options will cost the TTC around $1.5 million over five years, to offer more options to use debit and credit for payment, as well as the development of a “cash register” to account for the increased volume of transactions paid by card. The new options will not allow for the purchase of single fares using a card, but Byford promised a “wave and pay” option to go into effect next year, intended to allow for speedy payment of fares under $10. “Ultimately what we want is to get rid of tickets, tokens and transfers and move to Presto,” Byford said.

Rob Ford’s tumour has shrunk with chemo, says brother ‘First positive news we’ve had in six weeks,’ says Doug Ford DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Ro b Fo rd’s t u m o r h a s shrunk. That was the word from Mo u n t Si n a i Ho s p i t a l , where the former mayor was undergoing the latest

round of chemotherapy this week to battle the aggressive cancer that was discovered in his abdomen this past summer. The diagnosis caused Ford to drop out of the mayor’s race and run instead for his old seat on council, as he

underwent chemotherapy. Until now, the results from those sessions weren’t encouraging: while the tumor was arrested in its growth, it didn’t get any smaller – a prerequisite for surgery. Outside the hospital on Tuesday, Rob’s brother Doug

Ford – who ran unsuccessfully for mayor in Rob’s place – delivered the good news to reporters after he and Rob received it. “(Rob) was ecstatic but there’s only so much you can be ecstatic for,” Doug Ford said.

“You still have cancer, you still have a long journey, we aren’t celebrating yet. But it’s the first positive news we’ve had in six weeks.” Doug Ford said doctors will likely perform another MRI to decide what to do next, but he said it was likely that Ford would undergo radiation therapy before attempting surgery to remove the growth.

Lack of warning about escort attacks ‘shameful’: sex worker advocates Sex workers are calling foul on the lack of a police alert in the wake of a recent series of violent attacks against escorts across the city, mostly in the Etobicoke area. Jean McDonald, executive

director of Maggie’s – Toronto Sex Workers’ Action Project, called ‘shameful’ the fact that police did not contact her organization or issue an alert about the robberies, so a warning could be shared

widely via social media and street outreach. “A warning could have protected our community members, and instead, the police allowed perpetrators to continue their attacks on

sex workers,” McDonald said in a statement. On Oct. 25, Oct. 27 and Dec. 5, police allege a man knocked on the door of a hotel room occupied by a sex trade worker expecting a client. When the female victims – aged 20, 19 and 28, respectively – opened the door, they were allegedly rushed by three men, a woman and a girl. The group of suspects then allegedly ransacked the rooms, assaulted the victims and stole their belongings. On Dec. 9, a fourth victim was attacked at a hotel on Carlingview Drive. In this instance, however, police also allege the victim was sexually assaulted by two of the suspects. Police made three arrests in connection with the investigation Dec. 9. ered, the suspects allegedly continued to confine her until police apprehended Richards in his car later that day. In their joint release condemning the lack of police alerts, Maggie’s and Sex Professionals of Canada (SPOC) said the attacks demonstrate the importance of escorts being able to screen potential clients, to ensure the person calling is a legitimate and safe client. Bill C-36, new legislation criminalizes advertising, making it difficult for escorts to find clientele online, they said. “(It) inhibits the ability to screen, because clients fear sharing personal information to avoid incrimination,” the release reads. “These kind of attacks against our colleagues have been happening for several years, which is one of the reasons SPOC challenged the old set of laws. As we are seeing across Canada, Bill C-36 has done nothing to prevent violence against our colleagues,” SPOC’s Valerie Scott said in a statement.

Police are seeking the public’s assistance in a shooting investigation, after a 21-year-old man turned up in hospital with a gunshot wound early Tuesday morning. Officers from south Etobicoke’s 22 Division responded to a hospital in Mississauga at around 3:01 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16 after receiving a report that the victim had been dropped off at its emergency department. A Message to our Community During the holiday season, we hope you enjoy time with your friends and family.

Edward Sellers, Chair of the Board, and Michelle DiEmanuele, President and CEO

Our hospital has been preparing to serve you during the flu and holiday season when we see the number of patients at the Urgent Care Centre and Emergency Departments increase substantially. Although our wait times are steadily improving, the sudden increase in visits over the holidays can lead to longer wait times. With the holidays approaching, we encourage you to take a moment to know your options in our community and hospital if you or a family member requires care.

Your health is our passion and creating a new kind of health care for a healthier community is our mission.

In the months ahead, we will share more about our plans to address the increased capacity needs and engage you in a discussion about the future of health care in this community. Until then, on behalf of the more than 11,000 staff, physicians, volunteers and learners at Trillium Health Partners, we wish you and your family a safe, happy and healthy holiday season.

Pan Am races to centre around Lake Shore The safety net Lake Shore Boulevard will provide the backdrop for planned road competitions during next summer’s Pan American and Parapan Am Games. TO2015, The Toronto Pan Am organizing committee has posted course maps for the Games’ marathon, cycling, race walk, triathlon and Parapan Am cycling race, all of which begin and end on Lake Shore Boulevard. With an anticipated audience of 1.4 million expected to watch the Pan Ams in person, organizers say Lake Shore will have to close at times to all traffic during the Games, which take place July 10 to 26 followed by the Parapan Am Games Aug. 7 to 15, in order to allow for the safety of athletes and spectators. “To ensure a world-class field of play, as well as the safety of athletes and spectators, the race routes will require road closures at certain times on Lake Shore Boulevard and nearby streets,” a statement posted on the Games’ official website www. toronto2015.org reads. “The majority of these closures will take place in off-peak travel hours or on weekends to minimize disruptions to traffic, business and residents in the race area.”

Graphic/TORONTO2015

Maps detailing the routes for the Pan Am marathon, triathlon, race walk and cycling road race (seen here) as well as the Parapan Am cycling road race are now available at http://bit.ly/1BKNrdt

The statement, released Monday, also mentions meetings are currently taking place to inform businesses along the race routes about the future measures and traffic limitations. Lake Shore is a central artery in the province’s plan to manage traffic during the Toronto Games,

part of a 1,500-kilometre network of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes reserved exclusively for Games-goers and personnel. The Games Route Network will also include the 400-series highways, QEW, Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway.

Players from Faustina Hockey Club’s tyke select team had great success with their food drive at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence on Saturday. Some of the team members here are, from left, Thomas Lima, Ryan Christou, Richard Pilz, Lucas Christou and Luciano Torresan. The entire team of five and six year olds collected a net full of food for the Daily Bread Food Bank and raised $839.63 by canvassing visitors at the arena. The team thanks all who participated for their support.
