Arts Etobicoke exhibit showcases the work of the late Earla Alexander Alexander ‘inspired, thrilled and moved’ people to artistic expression The Earla Alexander Retrospective Exhibition: Art Is... is on display at Arts Etobicoke from now until March 20, in tribute to the late pioneering artist, educator, mentor, cultural champion and passionate advocate for community arts. Alexander, a longtime supporter of Arts Etobicoke, passed away on Sept. 28, 2014. The exhibition in Alexander’s honour, which opened Jan. 19, showcases a selection of the artwork she donated to Arts Etobicoke dating back from 1964 through to 2012, featuring both paintings and sculptural artworks, as well as a unique collection of her writing on art including ‘Art is…’. There will also be a public reception on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. “Earla’s generosity to Arts Etobicoke was grounded in her passion for art and life. She lived and worked in Etobicoke and wanted others in her community to be inspired, thrilled and moved to artistic expression,” said Louise Garfield, executive director of Arts Etobicoke, in a statement. “We often visited with Earla in her home or when she would walk over and drop in on us. Those visits were special – infusing us with her humour and utter love for painting, great artists and above all – colour, both literal and figurative, she filled our lives with just that.” In addition to Alexander’s legacy gift, there is also a scholarship in her name as part of Arts Etobicoke’s President’s Legacy Scholarship Fund.

Artwork by the late Earla Alexander is on display at the Arts Etobicoke Gallery in the 'Earla Alexander Retrospective Exhibition: Art Is…' until March 20.

Born in Picton, Alexander received her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Queen’s University and studied under André Biéler, before moving to Toronto, where she became a City of Toronto Cultural Champion. As an abstract expressionist, Alexander often worked on large-scale canvasses up to eight feet in width, using her body movement to create grand gestures in paint. She counted Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, and Willem DeKooning among her artistic influences, and enjoyed exploring with new materials and techniques, including Automatiste spontaneous painting. Alexander’s involvement with art education includes two years as an art teacher at Peterborough Collegiate; 20 years as the head of Etobicoke Collegiate Institute’s art department; and teaching

through the National Gallery of Canada and the Department of Education Summer School at the Ontario College of Art. Arts Etobicoke board member Nancy Newton was a student of Alexander’s who grew to become her friend. “Knowing Earla, starting with Mrs. Alexander the teacher and ending as a trusted friend, was a very interesting journey in how friendship can evolve,” she said in a statement. “Earla lived in the moment. She could make an adventure out of a small event. She was a keen observer of the aesthetics of the moment. Earla was young at heart and ageless.” Arts Etobicoke is located at 4893A Dundas St. W. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 11 am. to 4 p.m.

‘I may have to take any job to pay my bills’ TOM GODFREY etg@insidetoronto.com University graduate Hamdi Asser was among 200 young people searching for work or mentoring at a busy Rexdale job fair organized by the Toronto police Somali Liaison Unit. Mary Granil, 28, graduated from a justice and youth worker program at Humber College and has been looking for work for almost a year. “I have been looking for a long time and it is frustrating,” Granil said. “It is getting to the point where I may have to take any job to pay my bills.” The fair was held last weekend at a community centre at Queen’s Plate Drive and drew some top employers from the area including Woodbine Entertainment Group, Canada’s Wonderland, Toronto police recruiting, the RCMP and Toronto parks and recreation. Sgt. Brett McFarquhar, of 23 Division’s Somali Liaison Unit, said many area businesses have promised to hire area youth. He said the unit was created about two years ago to reach out to the community.

“The No. 1 issue we hear with young people in this community is youth unemployment,” Const. Ammar Khan said. “If the youth had jobs to go they wouldn’t have time to get in trouble.” Const. Raman Sandhu and colleague Const. Sylwia Swider spend many hours with residents in the Islington Avenue and Dixon Road area and on Queen’s Plate Drive. “On Tuesday there is our pick-up game of women’s’ basketball,” Sandhu said. “On Wednesday there are yoga classes at Dixon.” Swider and her colleagues are also learning to speak the Somali language to better communicate with residents. “We also do a lot of recruiting as well,” she said. “We are doing a lot of mentoring to men and women from the community and we are making a difference.” RCMP recruiter Const. Rola Murray said the Mounties are hiring 2,000 officers in the next year, with about 250 of the applicants being from Ontario. “We want to enrich our organization and we are looking for men and women from all culture and backgrounds,”

Murray said. “Now is a great time to apply to become an RCMP officer because we offer a career.” She said a first-class constable can earn more than $80,000 yearly plus benefits. About 200 young people attended the event last Saturday to talk to company officials. Meshach Wellington, 17, was speaking to recruiters about his goal of becoming a cop. “I am looking to become a police officer but I am not sure that I am quite ready yet,” he said. “I put in an application at Wonderland for the time being.” Shawn Wade, a security supervisor at Woodbine, said the complex is hiring as many as 30 qualified and licensed security officers. He said the job pays $15.55 hourly and they provide training. Ricardo Araujo, of the Toronto Police Youth In Policing Initiative (YIPI), said 150 young people are being hired to work in different areas of the force. ith Black History Month starting Sunday, members of Toronto’s black community are looking at not only their history but their

future. In today’s edition (see story on page 6), we look at the Black Experience Project that will be seeking input on what it means to be a member of the Greater Toronto Area’s 400,000-strong black community. Some 1,800 residents will be interviewed as part of the project, and organizers expect the answers to be as diverse as the community itself. A project of such scope has never been undertaken in the local black community before, despite a history that goes back to the 1700s in the Toronto area. Karen Carter of Heritage Toronto, one of the more than two dozen partners in the project, said the GTA’s black community has layers of identity – some tracing their ancestors to the Underground our view Railroad, others arriving from the Caribbean in the 1970s or more recently from Africa. How those difOur black ferent ancestries view themselves community as a community, many of differing faiths spread out in neighbourhas layers hoods across the GTA, will be one of the key findings the project is of identity aiming to discover. “It’s going to answer some questions we’ve all asked,” said North York filmmaker Ryan Singh of the project. The project’s organizers are clear there is not a single black experience, but rather many different experiences. However, organizers say there are also experiences that all members of the black community share that are unique to them and not experienced “by most other immigrant or ethnic communities in the GTA.” The information from the project should be both fascinating and valuable. For more on the Black Experience Project, go to http://bit.ly/1uTgPiZ For those looking to learn more about events planned in Toronto for February’s Black History Month, we’ve also got lots of information in our story today, including local listings. Many of Toronto’s libraries are hosting events during the month, but there are also concerts and dinners to celebrate Black History Month in Toronto. We’ll be paying for the fruits of Tory’s budget in years to come I n 2011, former Mayor Rob Ford and Toronto City Council made a very short-sighted move. Faced with a budget surplus from the previous administration, the council and mayor decided to use it all, offer a property tax freeze that no one asked for and wasn’t sustainable. In subsequent years, it made Toronto’s financial system more precarious, because by using one-time funding (in that case a surplus), city services were instantly outsized as compared to reliable revenue. It develops that in 2015, John Tory and the new council are doing something similar. In order to provide a budget that improves city services on a number of fronts, Toronto will be borrowing $86 million from the provincial

david nickle the city

government, to be repaid with interest. That loan will pay for services the city has now and for improvements too, reversing many of the cuts made during the Ford years and adding some more. Life will be easier in Toronto in 2015 on a number of fronts. But because the marginal service improvements rest on a marginal revenue source, 2016 will be another matter. Whether children can continue to ride free on the Toronto Transit Commission and catch their buses more quickly will depend on whether council can bear to cut services somewhere else.

The Ford administration brain trust was well aware that the 2011 tax freeze meant that city council would have no choice but to impose austerity measures in 2012. One might expect that the Tory administration’s brain trust is similarly far-sighted. Tory has, indeed, made promises to that effect: that he would find efficiencies in subsequent years, once he’d had a chance to settle into the job. It’s a nice promise to make, but more difficult to achieve. Last year, City Manager Joe Pennachetti, thinking to retire, told council very seriously that Toronto’s public service is running lean now, and that the city’s service levels cannot sustain more trimming. Taxes, indeed, would have to rise

in the future if council is to afford the services that it had in 2014. Putting children on the subway for free, adding subway cars and buses to make rush-hour more bearable, sheltering the homeless adequately… Pennachetti had not even contemplated such wonders last fall. So what is to become of us next year? It is difficult to say. Over the course of the campaign, Tory displayed his conservative bona fides; in the months following, he reached out to a more broadly-based constituency. And with this budget, he will have settled us into a corner. How we get out of it is anybody’s guess.

Church Elder continues to fight for the people, despite battle with ALS

Radcliffe Lennon wants new kitchen for Mount Olive church food bank and soup program CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com By all accounts, Radcliffe Lennon is a man who makes thing happen. And these days, the project he wants to see through more than anything is the renovation of the 70s-era kitchen at Mount Olive Seventh-Day Adventist Church – not only to enable the expansion of the church soup kitchen and food bank he founded, but also as a way of giving back to the “church family” that has supported him through his diagnosis with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) last year. “Radcliffe just needs to know about somebody and their problems, and he’s gonna see what he can do to assist them – even now,” Pastor David Rogers said of the now-wheelchair-bound Lennon, who has served as one of his Elders at Mount Olive Seventh-Day Adventist Church for the last 15 years. “His body may be deteriorating as ALS robs him of his voice and mobility, but his mind is as sharp as it was before his sickness – and his one desire is to get this kitchen done so we can help more people in the community. That’s just Radcliffe.” A police officer in his native Jamaica, Lennon moved to Canada seeking “new opportunities” in 1991, followed in 1995 by Fayth, his wife of 21 years. The couple then settled in the Islington and Finch West avenues area of Etobicoke, where they raised their four children, Keisha, Anique, Sabrina and Andre. It wasn’t long after the Lennons were baptized into the nearby Mount Olive

It was through that local outreach work, as well as his work as a special constable

with Toronto Community Housing, Lennon said, that he began to see first-hand the local community’s need for food access in Rexdale. “Many people come here to the church asking for help,” Lennon, who has lost the ability to speak above a whisper since his diagnosis with ALS last February, said through Fayth during an interview at Mount Olive Seventh-Day Adventist. Responding to that need, Lennon founded a weekly church food bank in 2008,

and a biweekly soup kitchen the year after that. Both operations, which run out of the aging church basement, flourished under his leadership. “One of the things about Radcliffe is he knows people and everyone knows him. He has a really good rapport with all the business partners we work with, so when he goes out and he asks people for help – whether it’s Tim Hortons or No Frills or wherever – people just give to him,” said Cossetta Evans, who

‘We still have hope for the girls’ rescue’ says Headley >>>from page 1 for one or two weeks, then nothing. The world went on to the next ‘in’ thing,” said the Trinidadian-born Headley, who lived in south Etobicoke until her recent move to the Runnymede Road and St. Clair Avenue area. “My piece means although there is silence right now, we still have hope for the girls’ rescue.” The kidnapping of the Ni g e r i a n g i r l s i g n i t e d global condemnation — expressed mainly through the social media campaign #BringBackOurGirls that Headley referenced. World leaders took to the streets in cities like Toronto, the scene of small rallies. Ne a r l y a y e a r l a t e r, #BringBackOurGirls, the world’s fleeting attention, and efforts by the U.S., Britain and France to send intelligence officers and hostage negotiators failed to fight Boko Haram or to lead to the rescue of the 219 girls who remain missing.

Charmaine Headley is one of eight female dance choreographers’ invited to participate in Queens Calling.

Earlier this month, the international community focused on the attack and killings at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo by Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi.

The brothers claimed to be members of Yemen-based Al Qaeda, which had singled out the magazine for publishing cartoons mocking Islam. Queens Calling is a performance intended to refocus attention and conversation on the Nigerian schoolgirls, Headley said. Headley described her choreographic creative process similar to that of a film director. “I see things filmically,” she said. “It’s framed – whether a section or a movement or a shape that comes to my mind. Then transitions are what connects it all together. “I’m a storyteller through physical movement.” Headley is dedicated to the preservation and performance of the African aesthetic. In 1993, after graduating from School of Toronto Dance Theatre, she co-founded COBA (Collective of Black Artists). The company’s mission is to “preserve the cultural traditions of Africa

and the African diaspora through education, research and public performance.” At the time, COBA filled a void, she said, noting other companies, like dance Immersion, have since joined

their ranks. The message of her Queens Calling performance piece is to encourage the world “not to forget the girls,” Headley said. “Yes, there are many things

going on in this world. But the abduction of the Nigerian girls should hit home.” To order tickets, visit www. harbourfrontcentre.com/ whatson or call 416-9734000.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85-Alive” program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners like Anita P. don’t see a prob-

lem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Homelessness is not just a TTC links to fake tax credit site downtown issue, says Leroux

>>>from page 1 vassing and corporate donations for the shelter in 2014. According to YWS manager Judy Leroux, the initiative has grown into a year-round concern, holding school workshops dedicated to enlisting volunteers and battling longheld misconceptions about youth homelessness. “One of the most common misconceptions is youth don’t like the rules at home so they leave,” Leroux said this week. “Over 70 per cent of youth we serve are survivors of abuse. Their home situation is not a safe one and they’ve had no choice but to leave.” This year’s T4C takes place Friday, Feb. 6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. On that day, student volunteers from 24 high schools will gather outside TTC subway stations, inside the underground PATH network and downtown office buildings encouraging people walking by to give up some change or

Leroux said there’s a mistaken belief homelessness is mainly a downtown issue. “We’re meeting demand in the suburbs, and a lot of people don’t realize there’s homelessness here,” she said.

The TTC is unknowingly linking to a web page appearing to originate from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), but in fact belonging to private company. At first glance the site www. transitpass.ca appears to be a federal government page, albeit with an older design template, providing helpful information on claiming a tax credit for regular use of a transit pass – and even displaying the official logo of the Canadian Urban Transit Association, which supposedly helped co-develop the “promotional” site. Also included within the page are text and links referring to a company with no apparent government association and promoting a “payday loan” service. The TTC’s chief financial officer is defending a proposal to raise Metropass fares, which if approved will see the monthly cost for the unlimited travel pass rise by nearly six per cent this year. Vince Rodo said increasing the Metropass, which will likely become $141.50 beginning March, is part of a “proportionate” fare hike recently announced, and says TTC trip data shows card users are taking more transit trips. “Over the last several years, each year on average Metropass users are taking

GO Transit users can also expect a fare increase. Approved by Metrolinx’s board of directors late last year, the increase is being justified by the transit planning agency as needed for upgrades to GO service, including the addition of extra trains on the Milton line. Parents, teachers blame province for ‘culture of fear’ Toronto District School Board trustees hear from the public after scathing provincial report CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com More than 40 delegates came to a speak at a special Toronto District School Board ( TDSB) meeting Monday to give their thoughts on the scathing report recently released by the province. The report by Margaret Wilson, appointed by the province to conduct a review of the board’s performance, made several recommendations hoping to change the “culture of fear” at the TDSB. With Wilson noting one of the causes contributing to the culture of fear being trustee intrusion into day-to-day management of board staff, she made such recommendations as closing the trustees’ offices at 5050 Yonge St. and reducing the budget for trustees’ discretionary office expenses. But the majority of the delegates ranging from local parents and teachers to union members and board employees, supported the trustees and instead blamed the Ontario government for causing

the “culture of fear.” “I would give this report an ‘F’,” said John Weatherup, president of the Toronto Education Workers, Local 4400 CUPE, noting the review doesn’t deal with the issue of governance at all. “People need to work together and you deal with the person who causes the problem. You don’t paint everyone with the same brush.” ‘punitive directives’ Others called the recommendations as “punitive directives” from Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals and stressed the importance and value of trustees to help parents deal with local school issues for their children. “We went to the polls on Oct. 27 and elected a bunch of trustees,” said Federico Carvajal, one of several parents who gave a deputation at the meeting. “If I recall correctly, Ms. Sandals wasn’t elected as trustee.” While most provided their endorsement to trustees, a few

delegates like parent Aly Alibhai expressed disappointment at the trustees after reading the report. “I read this report with incredible dismay, disappointment and quite frankly, shock,” said the parent of two daughters. “This is not acceptable to me as a taxpayer. I think you guys need to get your act together.” Fellow parent Stewart Nam implored the trustees to “play nice” with board staff. “Get along and try to find common ground,” he said. “I hope members of the board do take this report seriously.” But other delegates accused the province of having an ulterior political agenda in the report, which they say is to force the school board to close under-utilized schools. Winston Tinglin, interim executive director of Social Planning Toronto, questioned the recommendation from the Wilson report to have the TDSB provide a three-year capital plan that reflects a system-wide assessment of pupil accommodation needs of the board.

This (report) is not acceptable to me as a taxpayer. I think you guys need to get your act together. – Aly Alibhai, parent, addressing TDSB trustees

He expressed concern that would mean a large number of schools can be closed with negative impacts to students, families and the community at large. “This is a too narrow a view of schools and education,” said Tinglin, explaining schools are also locations for child care services, community meetings and neighbourhood green spaces. “The school is a community hub.” Some delegates noted the real problem is the provincial funding formula, which doesn’t adequately fund school communities. TDSB Chair Shaun Chen said there was a deep sense of encouragement by trustees after hearing some of the delegates.

“The public believes in the value of democratically elected officials,” said Chen, noting the public input will help shape and determine the final response to the province by the Feb. 13 deadline. “We have very little time to accomplish a lot.” Beaches-East York Trustee Sheila Cary-Meagher said she also felt reassured by what the public had to say and hoped the provincial government was listening. “Pay attention. That’s all. Just pay attention to what people are saying,” said Cary-Meagher, adding the cause of culture of fear is the provincial government with threats of budget cuts resulting in school employees worrying about whether they’ll have jobs or not. At the end of the nearly six-hour meeting, trustees voted in favour of holding two more similar consultation meetings in Scarborough and the York West area to solicit feedback from the community. What do you think? Do you support the trustees or feel the board needs an overhaul? Write to etg@insidetoronto.com

Create the ideal bedroom for a good night’s sleep Nothing is more important to our active, fun-filled lives than getting healthy, restorative sleep. Here are some tips for creating a bedroom to give you just that. • Change your pillow – If your pillow is older than three years and has not been washed, it weighs more now than when you bought it. It’s loaded with dust mites that are next to your face while you sleep. Choose hypoallergenic pillows over down pillows, and use a zippered pillow

Wash your pillow at least twice a year and replace pillows every three years. • Mattress – Cover your mattress with a hypoallergenic cover and wash it every two months. Make sure your mattress is non-toxic without formaldehyde-based fire retardants. • Pick non-VOC paints – Try to always use non-VOC paints which won’t off-gas, or leave an obnoxious paint odour to stir up allergies. It looks

just as good on the wall as regular paint. • At the window – Light pollution is an issue that people often ignore when trying to get a good night’s sleep. A well-fitted set of blinds, shades or shutters is a great choice, and it can be a healthier one, too, as draperies can be dust-catchers. For example, Hunter Douglas Silhouette A Deux shadings combine the sheer, lightdiffusing beauty of Silhouette shadings with a room-darkening roller

shade for increased light control and privacy when desired. • Wash or freeze stuffed toys – Stuffed animals and dolls are breeding grounds for dust mites. Wash them or put them in the freezer for 24 hours to remove them. • Keep pets clean and off of beds – Cat and dog allergies are very common, so keep pets bathed regularly to reduce the dander and don’t allow them on your bed. • Flooring – Remember that tile and

Nature’s Source: The Story of Elderberry Elderberry (Botanical Name: SAMBUCUS CANADENSIS) comes from the cooked black or blue berries of the European Elder tree. They have been used as a natural remedy for centuries all over the world. If you are using the berries from the Elder tree, only ripe berries are edible and they must be cooked to be safe. Unripe or uncooked elderberries can cause nausea, severe diarrhea and vomiting because they are poisonous. Elderberry contains organic pigments, tannins, amino acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, rutin, vitamin A, B and high amounts of vitamin C. It is a supplement used in teas, liquid extracts or capsules and makes a wonderfully tasty remedy! Modern research has shown that elderberries may have anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. Studies have shown that the anthocyanins(bioflavonoids) can boost the body’s production of cytokines. These proteins act as messengers to help regulate immune response, therefore, helping to defend the body against disease and infection. It has been used for influenza, sinus pain, hay fever, constipation, swelling, as well as skin problems. Since elderberry might cause the immune system to become more active, this could increase the symptoms of autoimmune diseases. If you have one of these conditions (multiple sclerosis, lupus,

rheumatoid arthritis) it is best to avoid using elderberry altogether. A syrup containing elderberry juice, such as Nature’s Way Sambucol and Suro elderberry, which can be bought at Nature’s Source, helps to relieve flu symptoms and reduce the length of time the flu lasts when taken orally within 24-48 hours at the first sign of symptoms. For most people, relief seems to occur within 2-4 days of treatment. This article has been provided by Jennifer Atamaniuk one of the experts at Nature’s Source. For further information or help finding the right products for your needs, Jennifer can be found at the Etobicoke Nature’s Source location at 40 Ronson Drive.

Take a health break with St. Joe’s Tips for Healthy Heart Living By Dr. Peter Mitoff, staff cardiologist at St. Joesph’s Health Centre As a Cardiologist, empowering patients with cardiovascular disease to make healthy lifestyle changes is the most rewarding part of my job. Educating people to play an active role in their heart health can potentially prevent problems in the future. Every year at St. Joe’s, we see more than 4,000 patients in our cardiology department for a range of cardiac issues from chronic heart failure, rhythm and heart valve problems to the most common complaint, chest pain. I am proud to be part of a dedicated team of Cardiologists, who are committed to providing excellent care. In honour of February’s Heart Month in Canada, we are connecting with our community to share some important steps we can all take towards adopting a heart healthy lifestyle. By recognizing and controlling risk factors, we can improve our overall heart health.

Diet • Making healthy diet choices is the first step in adopting a healthy heart lifestyle. Start slow by making modest changes to your diet – controlling portion sizes, and increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables. Make changes that you know you can manage. Exercise • Regular physical activity helps lower blood pressure and reduces the risk of developing diabetes. It also helps to relieve stress and improve mood. • In order to achieve the health benefits of exercise, it needs to be regular and sustained. Aim for 3045 minutes of brisk walking per day, most days of the week. Smoking • Smoking is a leading cause of heart disease. It leads to accumulation of cholesterol plaque in the arteries, increasing the risk of a heart attack or stroke. • Quitting is difficult, but it’s never

too late, and the health benefits are enormous. Speak to your doctor about tools and services available to help you quit. For additional support, contact our Stop Smoking Clinic where you will have access to a teamofdedicatedphysicians, nurses and addiction service workers who will help anyone who wants to quit smoking. You don’t need a physician referral to connect with us. Call us at 416-530-6000 ext. 3969 to find out how we can support you and/or book a visit with our team. Stress and sleep • Stress and lack of sleep have harmful health effects. • Find time to do things you enjoy. • Exercise is a great way to relieve stress. Seeing your doctor regularly • Talk to your doctor about assessing your risk factors for heart disease. The major risk factors for heart disease are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes,

smoking, an inactive lifestyle and a family history. Many of these are modifiable, and recognizing them and treating them early can go a long way to prevent heart disease down the road. Once I became a dentist, I sought out the best secrets of melting away dental anxiety so you would NEVER have to feel that way I did. When Should I Consider Hearing Aids?

Laser for Fungal Nails Shockwave Therapy Plantar Fasciitis Nail Treatments Morton’s Neuroma Biomagnetic Stimulation Therapeutic Ultrasound Compression Stockings

Many people ask us if their hearing is bad enough to require hearing aids. While the answer to this question is very personal and particular to each person, there are some common indicators that you should consider trying hearing aids. • You frequently ask people to repeat what they have said; • Your hearing loss is causing stress in your personal relationships; • You sometimes feel annoyed at people because you can’t hear or understand them; • You sometimes feel embarrassed from

misunderstanding what others have said; • You withdraw from social situations that you once enjoyed because of difficulty hearing. If you experience any of these symptoms you owe it to yourself and the people you care about to have a hearing consultation. Our highly trained clinicians will determine if you have hearing loss and how your hearing can be improved.

Young hockey centre named January’s athlete of the month Jack Wright, 6, plays centre for the Humber Valley Sharks Tyke Select A team. He laced up his first pair of skates at age three, and has had a smile on his face ever since. He is currently playing in his third year of Tyke with Humber Valley – with slightly bigger skates. A leader on his team, he loves passing and really gets a kick out of setting up his teammates. Make no mistake though, this is a kid who loves to score. Midway through the season, Jack is the team’s leading goal scorer with 35 goals. He has developed a bit of a reputation for his elaborate post-goal celebrations – which his parents believe is the direct result of watching far too much SportsCentre. While Jack can often be found on his family’s backyard rink playing with his buddies, he really attributes his success to the quality of the post-game snacks he consumes following his Tyke hockey games. BLACK history

MONTH

survey seeks complete picture of people’s lives in our black communities MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

T

oronto’s black community is not unified, not one. It’s many. Organizers of the Black Experience Project know this: 400,000 people in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) say they’re black, but each of their lives is different. Finding out how different is a monumental job, but next month – Black History Month – the project’s interviewers will start asking around 1,800 residents what it’s like to be black in the GTA. They’ll be asked about the strength of their identities – black, ethnic, and otherwise – their goals, religious beliefs, and where they feel they belong. Nothing like it has been done with Toronto’s black community, or communities, before. “It’s going to answer some questions we’ve all asked,” as well as shed some light on misconceptions, North York filmmaker Ryan Singh said last week. “More people will say, ‘The black community is a viable community, and we want to know more about it.’” Its supporters, including members of more than two dozen non-profit groups, say the project, when completed and released later this year, won’t simply sit on a shelf. “We’re going to get a really complete picture of people’s lives,” added Keith Neuman, executive director of the nonprofit Environics Institute, one of the project’s partners. The study is an important

exercise, said Karen Carter, executive director of Heritage Toronto and one of hundreds of “trailblazers” who volunteered time to shape it during 2012 and 2013. Black people in Toronto have layers of identity – whether they’re from families whose ancestors arrived on the Underground Railroad, or who came from the Caribbean in the Trudeau era, or from Africa more recently – complicated by the spaces in Greater Toronto they live in, Carter said. After its findings are known, Carter hopes the community, or communities, can “look within ourselves at these complications, as we grapple with them.” As chairperson of Black Artists’ Network in Dialogue, which uses culture “as a way to educate the average Canadian and average fellow citizen about who we are,” she said she avoids featuring just works from artists of Caribbean background, though artistic excellence must be shown by all. Carter also hopes the project demonstrates the usually overlooked economic power of Toronto’s black people, and that the results make their leaders more confident, able to go “walking in the door (of institutions) and saying, ‘Hey, I’m here,’ even if you weren’t invited.” Michael Hall, a vice president of YMCA of Greater Toronto, said his organization, a project partner whose black staff examined the proposal and got involved in designing the research, is committed to use the project afterwards to serve the community better. The YMCA supports any

Keynote speaker and former Scarborough East MPP Mary Anne Chambers addresses the Ontario Black History Society’s Black History Month kick-off brunch this past Sunday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

share your view What are your thoughts on the successes and challenges of the black community? Email us at etg@insidetoronto.com chance to “understand who (the black) community is,” including its needs and aspirations, Hall said. Though a report on the project’s “trailblazing” first phase concludes “there is no single ‘black experience,’ but rather ‘black experiences,’” and “the diversity with the community needs to be emphasized,” it also finds Toronto’s black people, as a whole, face challenges “not similarly experienced by most other immigrant or ethnic communities in the GTA.” Singh said he sees the project as a way to unite the black community’s factions and fragments. “There’s power in unity,” said Singh, adding his work within the community has reflected a “love-hate relationship” for years. “I love because I love my people, but I challenge because I find we’re so fragmented,” said Singh, who directed a call-to-action video (http:// youtu.be/JKezwsr7N10) for the project.

The research won’t answer every question, but it will start conversations to help heal the community, and will change the way advertisers and governments look at black people, he predicted. “It’s the beginning of understanding a people.” Singh joins a five-person panel discussing black experiences, moderated by author and broadcaster Dalton Higgins, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5 in the Maria A, Shchuka Toronto Public Library branch at 1745 Eglinton Ave. W. Each person speaking at the free event is a black storyteller or educator. The city’s other scheduled Black History Month events are, unsurprisingly, quite diverse, presenting everything from personal histories and spoken word poetry to culinary delights. For the Ontario Black History Society kick-off brunch this past Sunday, Mary Anne Chambers, a former Scarborough MPP, said she planned to speak about “selfempowerment,” her call to people in black communities “to see themselves as part of the solution.” “We are capable of, and we have made, these huge contributions to the world, and we need to continue to take our responsibility to define who we

are and write our own history,” she declared last week. Chambers said she’d reflect on achievements of black inventors, “people whose names we don’t hear as much as maybe we should,” but whose brilliance improved lives around the world. “Notwithstanding challenges too many people still experience as a result of poverty or not-too-subtle racism, we’ve come a long way,” Chambers added. Drop-out rates for black high school students are unacceptably high, relations with police are strained, and the community is over-represented in Ontario’s child welfare system, said Chambers, a former provincial minister for children and youth. Expressing sympathy for young people in these situations – “They need the village to support them today” – she also said she’d encourage youth to seek careers in law enforcement or justice system, to make changes from inside. When black youth and police meet under positive circumstances, stereotypes diminish and respect increases, Chambers said. “I hear this from the kids and I hear this from the police.”

Year-old storytelling project ends with celebration CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com From folk tales and Bollywood songs, to traditional dances and devotional hymns – the Ethno-Cultural Seniors group at Rexdale Women’s Centre closed the book on its yearlong Life Storytelling Project with a lively celebration at the Rexdale Hub last week. Fu n d e d by t h e Ne w Horizons for Seniors Program, the storytelling project was designed to encourage ethnocultural and ethno-racial seniors to link with their peers through shared experiences, said Saadia Akram Pall, director of programming for Rexdale Women’s Centre (RWC). “The reason why we applied for this project was because our seniors wanted to get together and share their stories. It was a great opportunity for people to see commonalities within their different culture groups by sharing their stories and folk tales – by singing songs, chants, riddles, rhymes,” she said, noting that the seniors were involved in every stage of the project, from development, to implementation, to organization. The Life Storytelling project saw members of RWC’s Ethno-Cultural Seniors group working with professional storytellers Sandra CarpenterDavis, Lynda Howes and Lorne Brown of Storytelling Toronto, a registered, non-profit charitable organization that offers

courses for storytellers at all levels; promotes and subsidizes the work of storytellers in education; and produces the annual Toronto Festival of Storytelling. For the last 13 weeks, the trio of professional storytellers have been working with a core group of about 90 seniors from all different cultural backgrounds – including Pakistani, Punjabi, Sri Lankan, Italian, Caribbean and Gujarati seniors, among others – with the help of a translator, Carpenter-Davis said. “It’s singing songs from their culture, it’s dance, it’s folk tales, it’s all of it,” she said. “We’re open to it all, because it’s all an expression of story. So, however they wished to participate was what we encouraged.” All of those forms of expression were on display at last week’s Grand Finale event

at the Rexdale Hub, which drew more than 100 of the Life Storytelling Project’s participants. In addition to showcasing their new storytelling skills through song, dance and spoken word presentations, each of the participating seniors was also presented with special certificates of appreciation from not only RWC, but also from the province, courtesy of Etobicoke North MPP Shafiq Qaadri and from the City of Toronto, presented by Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti. “We all have life experience – things we’ve been through in our lives and sacrifices that we’ve made – and I think it’s incumbent on us to share that with the world,” Crisanti said.
