Shovels will hit the ground this fall on the $40-million Six Points interchange reconfiguration.

City plans include replacing the existing Kipling-BloorDundas interchange with three major at-grade intersections, each with a traffic light. Dundas Street West will turn slightly east so it is parallel to Bloor Street West, west of Kipling Avenue.

East of Kipling, Dundas will turn north and connect to Bloor at the existing intersection of Bloor and Dunbloor Road.

The area is known locally as “spaghetti junction” for its network of road interchanges connected with ramps.

Construction will be phased over three to four years.

Initial construction will begin this September. Utility relocations will occur throughout next year. The remainder of construction will begin next summer.

An excited Bibi Hatton and her family will be among thousands of Muslims in Etobicoke celebrating Eid al-Fitr Monday, July 28 to mark an end of their fasting for the holy month of Ramadan.

Hatton and her three children will be attending one of two morning prayer services with 10,000 others at the International Muslim Organization (IMO) mosque on Rexdale Boulevard followed by a hearty meal with about 30 family members at her home.

“This day is very important and it is like Christmas to us,” Hatton said. “My house is spotless, the kids are excited and the entire family is coming over for a big feast.”

She is one of the many volunteers who have been preparing food in the IMO kitchen to distribute to the needy.

“This is also a time to give back to the less fortunate,”

SIU clears police officer in shooting of knife-wielding man at Kipling apartment ‘...it is clear that the shooting was legally justified’

After an eight-month investigation, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has determined there are “no reasonable grounds” to charge a Toronto police officer in the shooting of a 52-year-old man in north Etobicoke in November 2013.

Over the course of the investigation into the shooting, the SIU assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators, and interviewed the subject officers, seven witness officers and three civilian witnesses.

According to the SIU investigators, on the afternoon of Nov. 4, 2013, the subject officer and his partner accompanied a woman to her family’s apartment unit at 2677 Kipling Ave. to collect her belongings.

When they arrived, the officers witnessed as the woman’s father began arguing with her as she made her way to her bedroom to gather her things.

The subject officer followed the man when he left his daughter’s bedroom headed

for the kitchen, and then lost sight of him, but could hear him shuffling through utensils in the kitchen.

As the subject officer entered the dining room, he saw the man in the adjoining kitchen through a doorless passageway connecting the rooms – and the man had a knife in his right hand. man did not comply At that point, the man pointed the knife at the officer and began to advance in his direction. The subject officer drew his firearm and repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife, but the man did not comply.

Fearing a knife attack, and up against the back wall of the dining room, the subject officer discharged his firearm twice when the man was five or six feet away from him, striking the man in his left leg near the hip and in the right chest.

“These were very tight quarters. With nowhere left

to retreat and confronted by a man holding a knife and pointed in his direction, the subject officer shot when the man refused to drop the knife and neared to within six feet of his location,” Joseph Martino, acting director of the SIU, said in a statement released Tuesday.

“In the circumstances, the subject officer’s belief that his life was in danger and that he could not otherwise protect himself than by shooting the man was completely reasonable...it is clear that the shooting was legally justified and that there are no grounds to proceed with charges in this case.”

The man suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Rob Ford and his hecklers need to stick to the issues

t happened on Monday and it will probably happen again. Rob Ford will attend an event and hecklers will protest against him, turning whatever the intended purpose of the event was into a sideshow of the debate over the competency and morality of Ford continuing as mayor.

It’s a bad situation, which needs to be re-examined both by the Ford campaign and those opposed to him.

On Monday, Ford attended the opening ceremonies for Woburn Park in the North Toronto area. The park means a lot to residents who live in the area, but you would never have known that by the circus surrounding Ford. Hecklers interrupted him, and the media fired questions at him his time in rehab, his use of our view about drugs and more while Ford posed photos on playground equipCommunity for ment.

What wasn’t discussed was being ignored Woburn Park. with anti-Ford It was a similar scene at the recent launch of the Pan Am/ campaign Parapan Games countdown clock in Nathan Phillips Square. It’s one year until Toronto hosts the Games, but much of the event seemed to be dominated by a confrontation between an angry Ford supporter and those protesting against the mayor and the media in general.

Both sides need to do better. Ford needs to respect the difference between a community event and a campaign event; and so do those who are following him around protesting.

There is nothing more for the protesters to gain if they want to complain about Ford’s personal life.

Whether they are wearing shirts or not, they need to stick to the issues of the campaign. Yelling at Ford about crack smoking gains them nothing.

Right now, the protesters are probably helping Ford more than hurting him.

What we want from this mayoral campaign is some solid, fact-based discussion on how to pay for transit improvements in Toronto, whether to abolish or stay with the Land Transfer Tax and how to attract and keep businesses operating within the city’s borders.

Those questions need to be asked and answered in an appropriate manner, rather than in the circus-like atmosphere in which the mayoral campaign is currently taking place.

Laws apply to everyone – both homosexuals and heterosexuals To the editor: People seem to be up in arms that Mayor Rob Ford didn’t stand when the other councillors were thanking those who organized the Pride Parade.

Now I ask, if the yearly Greek parade were to have people on floats naked, simulating sex acts, gyrating, dressed indecently and performing other shameful acts, wouldn’t the police start making arrests? Last time I looked, performing lewd and lascivious acts in public were still against the law.

As well, aren’t children in attendance at these parades?

And when I tuned in to watch the parade on a local TV station, there was a warning the content could be offensive to some viewers as there was nudity.

If, as I mentioned above, these events took place at the yearly parade in Greek Town,

those in the Carabana parade, or, at the very least, dressed?

This could be a parade with a real purpose, perhaps to raise money for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, and to show those who are homophobic that gays, lesbians and transgender individuals are just like everyone else and thus deserve to be treated the same as everyone else, and that includes obeying the laws.

This parade was nothing short of depravity and I give kudos to Ford for not jumping on the degeneracy bandwagon. Everyone screams about Ford associating with criminals, yet our councillors laud those who flout the law publicly and call it Pride. By being a part of this parade, are they not supporting the breaking of laws? I ask, that being the case, how can they, in good conscience point fingers at Ford?

As for Ford so-called cherry

picking those in the media to whom he will give interviews, can you really blame him from excluding those who not only profess their animosity for him, but rather than reporting the news, prefer to create it?

If those in the fifth estate, bloggers, journalists and media outlets that operate outside of the mainstream media, take issue with Ford, isn’t that what columnists are for, as long as their words are not libelous?

As for how his constituents view Ford, I guess we’ll find out on Oct. 27, but until then, he is still the elected Mayor of Toronto, and if is expected to follow the letter of the law, then so must those who organize, attend and take part in all parades.

If the law doesn’t apply to everyone, there can only be one result...chaos.

The Old Mill: From tea garden to inn and spa Robert Home Smith opened tea room in 1914

O

n Aug. 4, 1914, Britain d e c l a re d w a r o n Germany, automatically bringing Canada into the First World War where its contributions changed history.

That same day, a much smaller event, also with longterm impact, took place in Etobicoke: Robert Home Smith opened the Old Mill Tea Garden. This tea room expanded over time to become today’s Old Mill Inn and Spa, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and where afternoon tea is still an honoured tradition.

Home Smith was the developer of 3,000 acres of land he had amassed along the Humber River valley, creating beautiful subdivisions like Kingsway Park. He also provided amenities for buyers of his properties, and the Tea Garden was one of the first he built. It was tucked away in a wooded valley next to

denise harris history corner the Humber River and the picturesque ruins of William Gamble’s 1849 grist mill.

Its Tudor-style architecture helped bring to life the motto of Home Smith’s business: “Angliae Pars Anglia Procul” – a bit of England far from England.

As its popularity grew, Home Smith began the first of many additions to the tea room. By 1921 they were offering dancing on a new dance floor to live music. By 1928, Home Smith’s firm had offices in a new wing, with a private cottage for him. Even through two world wars and a depression, the Old Mill remained a popular venue – one of the few that offered excellent food with dancing in an elegant setting. Expansions over the years included banquet rooms, a wedding chapel and

a gift shop.

Michael Kalmar, owner and president since 1991, undertook a large expansion in 2001 to add a boutique hotel and spa constructed of stone from Gamble’s “Old Mill” ruin.

Miraculously, the original tea room still exists within the Old Mill’s large complex and can be seen immediately southeast of the main entrance to the dining room on Old Mill Road. In honour of their centennial, the Old Mill has posted a gallery of old photos on its website at www. oldmilltoronto.com/about/ history/historic-gallery/ I believe it’s possible that the Old Mill Dining Room is the oldest restaurant in Toronto: if you can think of an older one, please let me know.

Beauty photography event celebrates and pampers breast cancer survivors

After Breast Cancer charity hosts SHE photo event along lakefront TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Elizabeth Johnson battled breast cancer with the same positivity and passion with which she lives her life.

“It was completely shocking,” the Islington Avenue and Dundas Street West woman said of her diagnosis two years ago. “I thought, ‘Did I have too many Diet Cokes?’ I don’t drink.

I don’t smoke. I’m fairly active. What did I do?”

Her perspective changed when she arrived at Princess Margaret Hospital in downtown Toronto for her first radiation treatment – surrounded by children awaiting theirs.

“I know that five-year-old boy wouldn’t have done anything to get cancer. That was the turning point for me. I told myself, ‘Stop blaming yourself.’”

Johnson related her journey with breast cancer to a reporter last week while a professional stylist curled her long, brunette locks into ringlettes during registered charity After Breast Cancer’s first SHE event in the Explorer at Waterview condominium, a stone’s throw from the lake.

The After Breast Cancer (ABC) program provides women in need with breast prostheses and special pocketed bras to fit prostheses at no cost.

Across Ontario, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. This year, an estimated 9,500 Ontario women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, the Canadian Cancer Society estimated.

Five-year breast cancer survival rates for Ontario women has increased to 87 per cent from 81 per cent in the mid-1990s, Cancer Care Ontario reported.

calls “ambassadors” an opportunity to share their stories and to enjoy a day of looking and feeling beautiful. Professional hair and makeup stylists came courtesy of Beauty Concept by Shirley Wu, with clothing provided by Dale Hodder, CEO and director of Style of Shut Up and Dress Me. Twelve professional photographers then shot the women striking a pose.

Celebrity judges including: Citytv News’ Cynthia Mulligan, CP24’s Patricia Jaggernauth, former CTV Toronto anchor Christine Bentley, Global News’ Angie Seth, Fas magazine’s editor-in-chief Shellina Ebrahim, Fusia magazine’s founder and editorial director Meera Solanki and OMNI TV’s Bollywood Boulevard host Veronica Chail will then choose the top photo.

The photo of that breast cancer ambassador will then be included in a calendar showcasing 12 strong and beautiful women after breast cancer.

“This is an amazing opportunity.

I couldn’t be more thrilled,” Johnson said amid the bustle of activity in the condo’s party room. “I’m trusting the process. They choose this hot-pink dress for me. Wow. I know it’s going to be awesome. Alicia has great taste.”

an unmet need.

The south Etobicoke resident, entrepreneur and owner of Premier Jour Fine Lingerie & Swimwear on St. Clair Avenue West in Little Italy had encountered a growing number of women who’d had lumpectomies or mastectomies following a breast cancer diagnosis coming in for a professional bra fitting – without breast prostheses.

“You hear those words: ‘You have breast cancer.’ These women would come into the boutique not being able to afford a prosthesis. It breaks

your heart. One woman had worn nothing for more than 12 years. One woman was using a sock stuffed in her bra. Some women never go back to work.”

ABC hosts an annual fundraiser to provide women without insurance or who cannot afford breast prostheses three specially pocketed bras a year and a new breast prosthesis or prostheses every two years.

Vianga has also partnered with the University Health Network and Princess Margaret Hospital on a breast cancer prostheses guide.

Johnson said she was determined breast cancer would not change her.

“I have an awesome life,” she said.

“I have an awesome job, awesome friends, awesome family, an awesome partner. They say everything falls apart after a diagnosis of breast cancer. Because I love my life and I love the people in my life so much, I try not to make a big deal of it.”

After a two-year regimen of “fat pills” as she calls them, or Tamoxifen, the most commonly used hormone therapy to treat breast cancer according to WebMD, Johnson will soon take a new drug, known to weaken her bones. She is already dosing up on Vitamin D daily to bolster her bone strength.

“Every day is a wonderful day. I’m just so thankful to be alive. You can’t worry about the possibility of some stray cancer cell floating around.

Having breast cancer doesn’t mean my life will be shortened.”

Vianga said she believes her charity is her life’s calling.

“We are all sent here for a reason.

This is why I believe I am here. It’s such a pleasure to be able to give this kind of gift... It’s all about making them feel special. They’ve been through a lot in life.”

He said the hampers contained items such as sugar, rice, meat, oil and other essentials, including some toiletries.

“We take the food to areas where there are homeless people and pass it out,” Farouk said. “People are very thankful and appreciative of the gift.”

He said Eid al-Fitr, which is also called “Feast of FastBreaking,” brings Muslims together to give thanks to Allah and share with others.

“Eid is a wonderful, joyous celebration and a time when everyone comes out in their finest and have fun,” Farouk explained. “It allows people to socialize and enjoy themselves and give thanks after fasting.”

Thousands of other Muslims from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) will be

descending on what is called the “largest Eid celebration in the city” that is taking place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Zubair Khan, of the Muslim Association of Canada, said this is the 29th year of the gathering and organizers are expecting up to 15,000 worshippers Monday.

“On this day, people are in a great mood and enjoying themselves,” Khan said.

“It will be very much like a carnival atmosphere with fun and games.”

He said families will have a choice of 50 vendors; can take part in a carnival with rides; play basketball, video and other games; plus choose from an assortment of foods.

“This is the biggest celebration of the year for Muslims here,” Khan said. “People travel from all over the GTA and beyond to be with their family and friends.”

He said the families bring non-perishable foods items that are given to the poor.

“This is also a day to give back to those in need,” Khan said. “No one will go without

Eid al-Fitr celebrates the purification achieved during Ramadan and is a time of forgiveness and making amends, he said.

“This is an event that the entire community looks forward to,” Khan said. “It takes a lot of work to organize and it is getting bigger every year.”

Eid is also when most Muslims will have their first daytime meal in a month, and one of the most common dessert is meethi seviyan, or vermicelli, with thin sphaghetti-like strands that are used to make sweet and savoury dishes.

The month of Ramadan lasts from June 28 to July 29 and is a time in which Muslims bring themselves closer to Allah through fasting and prayer. Eid al-Fitr was first celebrated by the Prophet Muhammad after the Muslims defeated the Meccans in the Battle of Jang-e-Badar in 624 Common Era, according to Islamic scholars.

A deal between the TTC and a Chinese company to purchase four tunnel borer machines (TBM) is now off.

The deal for the TBMs, which were used to excavate subway tunnels connecting Downsview station and six planned stops as part of the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension, was shelved after Lovesuns Tunnelling Canada withdrew its $9.2 million offer, according to media reports.

Previously the TBMs were offered to manufacturer Caterpillar to buy back, but the offer was also rejected.

The TTC wants to sell the TBMs, despite being a little over five years old, because they require regular maintenance and will soon be obsolete. They were purchased for around $52 million.

According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job.

What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems.

A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.

What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house.

An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions.

What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

Signs will be installed prior to construction to notify the public of its timing and extent. Alternate route signing is also being considered, Logie said.

“It is anticipated that these measures will reduce traffic congestion during construction,” he said.

This fall, to travel from Kipling northbound to Dundas or Bloor eastbound, drivers will need to use St. Alban’s and Aukland roads.

Drivers exiting the Kipling subway station passenger drop-off areas will also need to use St. Alban’s and Aukland to travel eastbound.

The city is reconfiguring the Six Points interchange with the intention it will foster development of the Etobicoke Centre area with higher quality public space that could also attract business and commercial operations.

YMCA of Greater Toronto officials have been in talks with City of Toronto staff in recent years about building a new YMCA on the grounds of the now-demolished Westwood Theatre lands at Bloor and Kipling.

When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples realize their current furniture is unlikely to fit into a smaller home.

That means couples will have to sell or

City announces upgrades to traffic control centre Round-the-clock monitoring will help respond to traffic emergencies quickly RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com An upgraded traffic control centre staffed 24/7 to serve as a hub for co-ordinating immediate responses to traffic pileups is just one measure the city is taking to tackle worsening congestion, said the city’s transportation services director.

In front of dozens of newly installed video screens capturing camera feeds from city roadways, Stephen Buckley said the $3 million upgrade of the existing control centre, which opened in the 1990s, was just one of many initiatives underway to deal with congestion as part of a management plan approved last

year by city council containing some 50 measures. “ What you see is the sizzle, but not a lot of the steak behind what we’re doing on congestion side,” said Buckley during a press conference Wednesday introducing the control centre near Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue East, which was also attended by Mayor Rob Ford and Public Works Chair Denzil MinnanWong.

Councillor and mayoral candidate Karen Stintz was also present.

The new screens will make it possible for city staff to rapidly dispatch police, fire or other personnel to deal with a traffic incident,

While the majority of the feeds covered traffic at expressways such as the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner, he promised

more cameras at major city arterials and better coverage in the downtown core, in addition to future improved coordination of traffic signal timings, TTC surface transit

operation, curbside management and constructionrelated lane closures.

Ford said the new centre and future improvements prove the city is on track

when it comes to dealing with congestion.

“This is real action,” said Ford during prepared remarks.

“This new traffic operations centre is another example of our strategic investments in traffic-fighting technology.”

Despite congestion getting worse – to the point where it now costs the average city resident more than threeand-a-half hours of lost time per month due to gridlock according to city data – Buckley said most rankings had Toronto in “middle of the range, placing anywhere from ninth to 11th for the worst traffic on the continent. Even with the upgrades, however, Buckley cautioned improvements would only come on an incremental basis, meaning no quick fix for traffic congestion is coming.

Two suspects flee with cash The Ontario Convenience Store at 2-2757 Kipling Ave. was robbed at gunpoint on Monday, July 21.

Police allege two male suspects entered the store at around 9 p.m.

One of them approached a 34-yearold employee behind the counter, pulled a handgun and demanded

cash, while the other suspect removed cash from the register.

The suspects then fled the scene.

The suspects are described as follows: the first is black, aged 20 to 25, 5’9”, with a thin build; the second is black, aged 20 to 25, 5’11”, with a thin build.

Man shot in Jamestown while putting out his garbage A 29-year-old man was rushed to a local trauma centre in “serious” condition after being shot outside his Jamestown Crescent home Sunday night.

“He was outside putting out the garbage and was shot,” said Const.

Victor Kwong, noting that police

received the call at around 11:55 p.m.

The victim, he added, was transported to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

No suspect descriptions were immediately available, although Kwong said a car was heard squeal-

ing away from the scene shortly after the shooting.

Man, 75, found drowned in condo pool CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A 75-year-old man was pronounced dead at hospital after being pulled out of a pool at a south Etobicoke condo building early Monday morning without vital signs.

Toronto Fire Capt. Stephan Powell said emergency personnel were dispatched to 2045 Lake Shore Blvd. W. – the address of Palace Pier condominiums – at around 1:01 a.m. after receiving a report that a

person had been located with vital signs absent.

“We were called to the pool where somebody had drowned,” he said, noting there were no witnesses, and therefore it was unclear how long the man had been in the water.

When fire officials arrived, police officers from 22 Division were already performing CPR on the man, Powell said.

“We attempted to use our defibrillator, and then when EMS arrived, they took over with their

defibrillator,” he added.

According to a Toronto EMS spokesperson, the 75-year-old male was transported to St. Joseph’s Health Centre, where paramedics were still trying to resuscitate him.

Toronto police Const. Victor Kwong said the man was pronounced dead in hospital.

Police continue to investigate, although Kwong noted a surveillance video from the condo’s pool area has determined the incident was not suspicious.

Etobicoke adult swim club hopes pool reopening brings back some members The Etobicoke Olympium Masters Aquatic Club will enjoy a newly renovated pool in September when the Etobicoke Olympium reopens after its overhaul for the upcoming Pan Am/Parapan Am Games coming to Toronto July 2015, and the club is hoping to add some new members. pool closure The closure of the pool last season forced the club out into pools in surrounding communities resulting in the loss of more than half of its membership.

With the facility slated to open Sept. 2, just in time for the upcoming season, the club is hoping to once again push its membership to the usual 100-plus.

“We swim out of there on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday,” said Mirko Petrov, who handles communications for the club.

The club will officially close out the current season when it competes in August in Montreal in the FINA World Masters swimming championships.

From 18 to 92 years At least 30 club members are slated to make the trip, Petrov said.

One-year countdown until Pan Am/Parapan Am Games JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Thousands packed into Nathan Phillips Square Friday, July 11 to kick off a one-year countdown to Toronto’s next big chance to host the world.

Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mayor Rob Ford and other politicians were on hand as Cisco unveiled a giant clock counting down the days until the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ParaPan Am Games.

The kick-off also marked the start of a two-day celebration in the square.

“This is a wonderful, wonderful opportunity for our city, for our province and for our country,” Wynne said of the Games.

“Ontario led the bid to host the Pan Am Games to showcase Ontario on the world stage and build new community-friendly sporting facilities that will allow our athletes to train right here at home,” she said.

“They won’t have to go to other venues to find a velodrome, or to find a pool, or to find a track to practice at because we’re going to have those facilities right here.”

Ford received a mixed reception as he welcomed those in attendance at the countdown ceremony.

Moloney has four acres of land in the Kawartha region and hopes to one day produce crops on it to sell to residents.

Soroka said she’s thrilled she can farm in Toronto.

“I live in the Junction and we have a spot at the farmers’ market there and it’s just amazing that 12 kilometres away, they’re growing food so I wanted to be part of this.”

Only in its second year, the site is Toronto’s largest urban farm as well as the city’s first full-scale organic vegetable farm.

Even Executive Director Gavin Dandy is surprised by the farm’s quick success.

“The most common thing we’ve heard from people over the first couple of years, they walk in the gates and go ‘Wow, I had no idea this was here’.”

She rhymed off many of the five dozen or so vegetables grown on the farm including onions, leeks, tomatoes, pattypan squash, radishes and peppers in addition to the crops such as collard greens.

The public can buy produce from the farm through a subscription Harvest Share program or at farmers’ markets.

There are also bee hives, an intern program, volunteer opportunities and workshops. A school program will launch this year and a summer camp is expected to begin next year.

There are also plans for an outdoor classroom and the making maple syrup.

Family Farm Festival Black Creek Community Farm hosts its Family Farm Festival Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at 4929 Jane St. Admission is free.

Visitors will be able to tour the farm, see the honey bees, visit the greenhouses, learn how to grow their own multi-vitamins, enjoy lunch and paint a scarecrow.

As Abdinasir Mohamed, Colleen Moloney and Suzanne Soroka harvest cucumbers on this eight-acre farm, it’s easy to imagine they are pulling crops from soil in the countryside miles from the city.

But the roar of the occasional plane overhead and the sight of apartment buildings just a stone’s throw away are reminders the city provides an integral backdrop to Black Creek Community Farm southeast of North York’s Jane Street and Steeles Avenue intersection. “(I like) the health aspect of it. It’s good to learn how to make your own food and grow your food. It’s a life skill that one needs...” Mohamed said.

Moloney, an Etobicoke resident who in May began an internship program at the farm, and Soroka, a Junction resident, who started as a volunteer about the same time, agreed. “...It’s really feeling we have a crisis food-wise and nutrition-wise, especially in cities, and I don’t think it’s sustainable to be bringing in food from California (for example)

Conservation Authority (TRCA), the land is leased to Everdale, a not-forprofit organization that provides hands-on farming education.

“We want it to become a neighbourhood resource like a park, a farm park,” Dandy said.

During a tour last week, resource developer Verity Dimock showed off the farm, starting with the farmhouse that was built in 1853 and moved from the old village of Weston to this location in the early 1950s by the TRCA. The house and surrounding land was used by the superintendent of Black Creek Pioneer Village until 2007 when the conservation authority turned the house into office and community space. That lasted until budgeting pressures forced the conservation authority to seek new uses for the farm. The conservation authority put out tenders to see if anyone was interested in using the site in a creative way that generated revenue, Dimock said.

The Black Creek Community Farm was born.

As she walked around the farm, Dimock pointed to two greenhouses, which will allow hardy vegetables to be grown during the winter.
