Etobicoke’s Dorothy Ley Hospice is set to receive a funding increase of $150,000 as part of Ontario’s $13.9-million investment in hospice services across the province. “Hospices provide Ontarians and their families with high quality and compassionate palliative and end-of-life-care,” Dr. Eric Hoskins, minister of Health and Long-Term Care, said in a statement. The investment will increase funding for existing hospice beds by $15,000 per adult bed and $22,400 per pediatric bed. “The Dorothy Ley Hospice welcomes this new commitment by the government of Ontario as another important step toward ensuring the ongoing sustainability of Dorothy Ley Hospice’s vision of fostering hope and dignity for individuals at the end of life,” Sally Lewis, chair of the Dorothy Ley Hospice board of directors, said in a statement. “Working with our community partners, Dorothy Ley Hospice will continue to ensure access to compassionate and high-quality palliative care, through our community program and our ten bed residential hospice.”

Man turns to GoFundMe to save kid brother’s life cyNtHiA REAsoN creason@insidetoronto.com An Etobicoke man who recently launched a crowdfunding campaign for his 19-year-old brother battling a brain tumour in Ukraine is “astounded” by the support he’s received from his community. Since creating a GoFundMe page May 20 on behalf of his brother, Peter, Eduard Dychkovski has raised more than $21,000 toward his brother’s medical costs. “My family is impressed by how many people jumped to support Peter in this difficult stage of his life,” Dychkovski wrote in an email to The Guardian. “No words can express our gratitude, we are truly grateful for your donations. Your generosity and kindness could help save Peter’s life.” Described by Dychkovski as an active young man with a passion for soccer, Peter was playing basketball in his high school gym in Chortkiv, Ukraine, in November 2013 when he collapsed and began having a seizure. He was rushed to hospital where, one week later, the results of an MRI

nineteen-year-old Peter dychkovski, of Ukraine , is recovering well from a May 25 surgery to remove a brain tumour, his second such operation in Belgium in three years. his brother in etobicoke has launched a GofundMe campaign to help cover the costs of his ongoing care.

led to his diagnosis with a grade 3 astrocytoma brain tumour. That diagnosis was confirmed by a neurosurgeon at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, Dychkovski said.

“The brain tumour was large and continuously growing,” Dychkovski added, noting both his brother’s radiologist and neurosurgeon urged him to seek medical intervention

immediately. “We found a doctor in Belgium and Peter went for his surgery on Dec. 31, 2013. The operation was successful, followed by radiation treatment. The recovery process was not easy, but he got over it and continued living his normal life.” In the first two years following his surgery, Peter attended college in Chortkiv and maintained his involvement as a church ministrant, all the while returning to hospital every three months for MRI screenings. It was during one of those routine follow-up scans on March 16, Dychkovski said, that doctors detected another tumour in his brother’s brain. “Ever since then, his health had been rapidly deteriorating and he was urgently in need of another surgery,” he said, noting that surgery took place on May 25 at St. Augustine Hospital in Antwerpen, Belgium. Dychkovski said the cost for his brother’s medical care “go over six digits,” which is why he created the GoFundMe campaign. For more information, visit www. gofundme.com/25c8e2q4

Thistletown Collegiate Institute (TCI) will be cooking up a cheesy encore this weekend for those who missed out on their award-winning culinary creations at the recent Mac & Cheese Festival. The June 3-5 festival at Ontario Place saw Chef Keith Hoare’s TCI culinary students beat out 40 other chefs from around Toronto to take home the People’s Choice Award for their Mac & Cheese ‘Fries’ Poutine offering. That recipe proved such a “big hit” amongst festival-goers, Hoare said, that his budding young chefs decided to host a pop-up garden party at TCI this Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. In addition to serving up their fabulous mac & cheese dishes, TCI student chefs will also be selling organic produce from their 14,000 square foot garden, cold drinks, and raffle tickets for flights to Europe during the afternoon event. All proceeds from the event will help send the students on an upcoming culinary trip to Italy in 2017. TCI is at 20 Fordwich Cres. just off Islington Avenue, north of Hwy. 401. All are welcome to attend.

elcome to summer Toronto! It officially arrived on Monday of this week, but judging by our recent hot weather it’s actually been here for awhile. And is there any better place to be in the summer than Toronto? We’ve got it all, as you can see by our Summer In The City feature story in this week’s paper. This coming first weekend of summer sees events such as the Luminato Festival, Taste of Toronto and the beginning of two weekends of top-level youth soccer action with the Robbie tournament. The Robbie International Soccer Tournament celebrates its 50th anniversary OuR ViEW this year, and it has grown from a small event with a few teams in 1967 to City boasts a Scarborough what is now the world’s largest cross-section youth soccer tournament for charity. of events It has raised more than $1.6 million for Cystic Fibrosis Canada in that time. The 50th version of the Robbie will see in excess of 300 teams playing in the festival (for boys and girls teams ages eight to 12) this weekend, and then the competitive tourney (for boys and girls teams 13 to 18) from July 1 to 3. And that’s not all. While Pride Month events have been taking place in Toronto throughout June, things really kick into gear this weekend as Pride Week begins. The week culminates in the Pride Parade July 3, which travels along Church Street from Bloor to Yonge-Dundas Square, but will also include the Trans March July 1 and the Dyke March July 2. Other large city-wide events in the next few weeks include the Honda Indy, which brings in racers and race fans from around the world, starting July 15. The Indy has been a Toronto tradition since 1986. Also, there’s the Toronto Caribbean Carnival starting July 28 and continuing through to the holiday Monday on Aug. 1. From humble beginnings back in 1967, the carnival has grown to become a massive tourist draw for Toronto. But not every event this summer is geared to huge crowds and tourists. There’s no end of community festivals set for our city, and whatever neighbourhood you are in, you will be sure to find something to do this summer in the city.

column

Big discussions, decisions planned for city’s future Next week Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee sits down for the last time before business at city hall winds down for the summer. But don’t expect a lazy, hazy meeting. Indeed, the June 28 gathering of Mayor Tory’s cabinet-like committee could be the most important one of the entire term. On the agenda: • a report revising upwards the cost of the single-stop Scarborough subway, that also sets the city’s transit-building agenda for the next two decades; • another one, looking at revenue tools beyond property taxes to pay for things like that transit plan; • a review of the city’s considerable real estate assets, taken with an eye to maximizing savings and revenues; • and the implementation of the Tenants First plan, to try and put right the city’s considerable portfolio of public housing.

david nickle the city To put it another way: the Executive Committee will be considering some of the most expensive initiatives under consideration by Toronto Council this term, at the same meeting as it examines some of the most ambitious measures to pay for those initiatives. It is not immediately obvious how Mayor Tory and his like-minded Executive Committee members will rise to those two challenges. So far, balancing ambition and reality has been an ungainly exercise for the team. Tory has been anxious to get down to the business of city-building, slow to get to the business of budget-pruning, and brashly confident in his ability to do both. His letter of instruction to the budget committee that met this week illus-

trates this perfectly. He has asked the committee to freeze expenditures for 2017, keep property taxes at or below the inflation rate. Efficiencies are to be found, alternate service delivery (contracting out) is to be considered… but ambitious new programs that form the backbone of Tory’s election-platform mandate are sacrosanct: transit and transportation, housing, and poverty reduction. That mission statement leaves very little room to wiggle – but the wiggle-room increases when the two questions of what we want and how we can afford it are asked and answered on different schedules. The June 28 Executive Committee meeting is a rare confluence, wherein everything is on the table at once. Do we want to build a massively expensive, marginally useful single-stop subway in Scarborough,

knowing that we will then have to consider raising all kinds of levies and taxes in order to afford it? We do need to repair our public housing, and that while other levels of government might offer some help, we’ll have to put up some share of the cost. How? Executive Committee members won’t have to answer all those questions immediately. But they will have to start talking about them in the same breath – in a way that until now mainly the mayor’s critics have done, and that the mayor and his supporters have characterized as simply nay-saying. At some point, the politics has to stop and the governance has to start. Next week, looking hard at both the dream and the problem, is as good a time as any to begin.

Mayor Tory defends SmartTrack amid funding questions RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com With the announcement of new transit stations, and more to come, SmartTrack is a little closer to reality, even if it remains unclear exactly what that reality is. The city and the province jointly announced four new GO Transit stations for Toronto on Tuesday: two for the Barrie line, for Bloor and Lansdowne as well as for Spadina and Front. It’s all part of the Regional Express Rail (RER) expansion. Two more are planned for the Kitchener line at St. Clair West and Keele, plus Liberty Village, which would ostensibly be dedicated for SmartTrack service. But with several key questions still unanswered, including service frequency levels and fares, Mayor John Tory’s pet transit project remains more of an aspiration than an actual line. Even so Tory, exasperated at times, insisted all questions surrounding SmartTrack will soon be answered, and that its existence is in fact a reality given a federal commitment to pay a portion of its final construction cost. “If SmartTrack wasn’t a reality,

Rahul Gupta/MetRoland

A Union Pearson express train passes through Liberty Village. Earlier, Mayor John Tory and representatives from the provincial and federal governments announced four new GO stations for Toronto.

why did I have to go and get the money for it?” said Tory during the announcement at Liberty Village Tuesday. “Why did I have to hold extensive discussions with (Minister of Transportation Minister Steven) Mr. Del Duca, (Metrolinx CEO Bruce) Mr. McCuaig and others about where we would get stations? It was quite a long discussion and we didn’t get absolutely everything we wanted,

NOW OPEN

but we sure got a lot. “This is a very real project. Regional Express Rail is very real. Construction is underway.” What’s known is Toronto will have more GO stations whether or not they are branded as SmartTrack. In addition to the stations announced Tuesday, another joint announcement was planned for Wednesday, after The Guardian’s press deadline,

at the Unliever development site in the Portlands. In all there could be six SmartTrack stops, running on both the Kitchener and Stouffville GO lines.Flanked by Del Duca as well as several Toronto MPPs and Adam Vaughan, representing the federal government, Tory promised more details will be made available about SmartTrack soon, particularly about fares, when Metrolinx releases its

Mississauga’s Newest Showcase Dealership...

long-awaited report on integrating TTC and GO use through the Presto card. Tory also hoped SmartTrack will run at seven to 10 minute intervals, although RER promises GO trains every 15 minutes. And then there’s the cost of the plan. Initially estimated at $8 billion, ballooning costs for the Scarborough subway extension, the Eglinton East LRT, as well as unfunded priorities like the Downtown Relief Line and the Waterfront LRT have added to that total. With the city manager warning Toronto’s finances are hanging on a knife-edge, it remains to be seen just where the money will come to pay for all of this promised new transit. And that’s not even considering the costs for operating all the new services if and when they get built. But Tory insisted the money will be found, and soon the rest of the answers will be made clear, paving the way for a rosy transit future. “I’m very happy that at the end of this piece, and when all the announcements are made and all the decisions taken, people in Toronto are going to have way more public transportation than they had before,” he said.

Tory backs $68M road safety plan Pedestrian and cycling safety advocates are fuming, but a road safety plan meant to curb the spate of deaths was approved in principle by the city’s public works and infrastructure committee this week. The plan still needs council’s full approval to become a reality, and has the backing of Mayor John Tory and public works chair Jaye Robinson. Groups like Walk Toronto counter it has too little funding attached – $68 million spread out over five years – to make a huge difference. Expect to see more of the special buses in service as the days tick down to the grand Pride parade, scheduled for the upcoming long weekend. columnisT heaPs Praise on TTc wTribune

A Chicago Tribune column by Mary Wisniewski praises Toronto for running the third busiest transit system on the continent and sees it as inspiration for the flagging Chicago Transit Authority. While Toronto has barely half the amount of rapid transit lines and less than half the stations of its sister city, it boasts over a million more daily trips, including 68 per cent of morning commuters making use of transit compared to less than 30 per cent of Chicagoans.

Wisniewski also heaps praise on Toronto’s tendency of late to tie development with transit building. But it’s not all praise: she notes the TTC is “oddly inadequate”, at least when it comes to our 8 a.m. Sunday openings. rePairs haPPen aT baThursT sTaTion wroof

The work taking place at both the main and secondary entrances to Bathurst station isn’t expected to disrupt service, although riders will have to deal with barricades on the bus platform, as well as a “nonhazardous” odour emanating when liquid asphalt is poured out. And they’ll have to board shuttle buses instead of the regular 511 streetcars. Further south on Bathurst Street, the College Street intersection remains closed until July 12 for track repairs and road work. Toronto Environmental Alliance launches INHALE project to educate about pollution CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Every day here in The Big Smoke each of Toronto’s 2.79 million inhabitants inhales an average of 22,000 times– totalling 61.38 billion collective daily breaths. Is it any wonder, then, that in a city whose air pollution is estimated to give rise to 1,300 premature deaths and 3,550 hospitalizations each year, that many residents have begun to take a more vested interest in learning what it is they’re breathing in? The Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) doesn’t think so. In fact, the not-for-profit environmental watchdog banked heavily on Torontonians’ willingness to take a hands-on approach to air monitoring with the launch of the INHALE – Initiative for Healthy Air & Local Economies – Project. And they haven’t been disappointed, said TEA’s campaigns director Heather Marshall. “What we’re doing with INHALE is making the invisible reality of air pollution visible for people, using tools like mobile air quality monitors and our Fresh Air Finder map to make them more aware of the fact that air pollution still poses risks to their health,” Marshall said of the Metcalf Foundationfunded project, which has attracted more than 150 volunteers in Toronto. Lauded as Canada’s first community air monitoring initiative, TEA’s INHALE Project arms volunteer “citizen scientists” with compact and easy-to-operate air quality monitors and GPS devices, which they can strap to their backpacks, bicycles, strollers or wheelchairs. As those volunteers pound the pavement around their neighbour-

Staff/Metroland

Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) campaigns director Heather Marshall (left) and climate change campaigner Dusha Sritharan demonstrate the use of a mobile air particulate monitor at the intersection of Richmond and Duncan streets. TEA is in the midst of an initiative that has volunteer community air trackers carrying the devices in order to map the city’s air quality.

hoods, the monitors automatically draw in air and count the volume of fine particulate matter (or PM2.5, defined as those particles 2.5 microns or less in diameter) that passes through its internal laser. “Our monitors are such a unique tool, in that they can make people understand that, even though you might not see them, (these particulates) are definitely out there in the air we breathe and they can have an impact on people’s health,” said Dusha Sritharan, TEA’s climate change campaigner. What are these particulates, one might ask? Defined by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) as “the term used for a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets in the air,” particulate matter can include anything from aerosols, smoke and fumes, to dust,

But it is the smallest amongst these particles of matter – the PM2.5 particulates that TEA’s INHALE Project focuses on – that ministry officials assert cause the greatest adverse health effects, especially amongst people with asthma, cardiovascular or lung disease, as well as children and elderly people. Those particles – which can include cancer-causing heavy metals, carbon, and gas-related particles like benzine – Marshall added, are “the ones that get into your lungs and are really hard for your body to deal with.” Identifying neighbourhood hot spots for such air particulate pollution, therefore, is an important first step in TEA’s mission to spark community dialogue around neighbourhood-level solutions designed to improve air quality.

To those ends, all streetlevel data collected thus far by TEA volunteers who have participated in the INHALE pilot project – the monitoring of which kicked off in south Etobicoke last summer and just launched in Toronto’s downtown core last month – has been collected, collated, and illustrated on TEA’s Fresh Air Finder online map at inhalemap.com Readings in the range of 0-599 PM2.5, or good, are depicted on the map in green, while readings in the range of 2287-3977 PM2.5, which are considered poor, are rendered in red. In-between ranges of 600-1323 PM2.5 and 13242286 PM2.5 are portrayed on the map in yellow and orange, respectively. “With south Etobicoke, what we consistently saw with the data – especially for areas along Lake Shore Boulevard – was pretty poor air quality,” said

Q

Dr. Srajeldin, what causes eczema on my infants elbows and knees? MAINTENANCE • TIRES • BRAKES • OIL & FILTER • BATTERIES • ALIGNMENT

A

At our clinic, the naturopath evaluates Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) as a skin reaction to certain ingested foods or inhaled airborne particles. Some cases of skin eczema are related to airborne particles (allergic dermatitis) which surfaces during allergy season. This condition has a specific treatment. The majority of skin eczema conditions (Metabolic Dermatitis) in infants and adults are year round and are related to (1) lack of breast feeding, (2) early introduction of solids, (3) lack of digestive enzymes, (4) bleached rice or bread, and (5) excessive usage of medications. Yet, all of the above causes have their own and specific remedies to eradicate the body from the symptoms. In addition to therapeutic remedies, a naturopathic treatment must include a wide selection of non-allergic foods to expedite the patient’s recovery.

Sound advice about hearing loss Getting a hearing aid is never on anybody’s bucket list. “Just about every patient I test tells me they don’t want a hearing aid,” says Davidah Wolf, audiologist at Hear After in Etobicoke. “My response is typically, ‘In forty years of being an audiologist, I think I’ve met two people who say they want a hearing aid. But I have met hundreds of people who are thrilled with hearing aids once they try them.’ Hearing aids need to be thought of as a positive rather than a negative experience, “ she says. Unfortunately, hearing loss is common as we age. With hearing loss, it will be difficult to hear and understand what people are saying, or to hear sounds like birds chirping. Often family members will say that the TV is too loud. And while hearing aids cannot make anyone hear like a teenager, it can make many life experiences much more enjoyable. Also, using a hearing aid can keep one’s brain “young,” by ensuring the brain is receiving all the information and stimuli it can. Hear After, located at 135 Queen’s Plate Dr., has been in existence for 15 years, with staff who go above-and-beyond to help their patients adjust to hearing aids. It’s a very personal relationship between hearing specialists and their patients, and Hear After believes it is important that patients see the same person for each appointment.

“We always encourage our patients to come in for as many follow-up appointments as they need,” says Davidah. “No problem is too small for our attention. We want our patients to be happy.” At the first appointment at Hear After, an audiologist will take a detailed health history before giving a hearing test, and then carefully walk patients through the results. The team at Hear After knows that expensive doesn’t always mean better, and are known to suggest the best hearing aid for the patient, keeping budget in mind. Hear After offers patients a free two-week trial period, to test out the hearing aid and experience the benefits before purchasing. To learn more about hearing loss, visit the website www.hearafter.ca and to make an appointment with the hearing specialists at Hear After call 416-744-1222.

The 6th Annual Ruth Farb Charity Golf Classic presented to you by Dr. Fleas Flea Market Pancreatic cancer can strike anyone, at any time. When the Farb family suddenly lost wife and mother Ruth Farb, to pancreatic cancer in September 2010, they were devastated. With such little time left and few meaningful treatment options, it felt as if there was little hope. In 2011, the Farb and Koffman families created the Ruth Farb Charity Golf Classic in Ruth’s memory. This year pancreatic cancer will surpass breast cancer to become the third leading cause of cancer death in North America. Currently, there is no way to detect it, and no treatment can work fast enough to make a difference. Ruth’s memory lives on through the tournament, and a special fund created in her name to support vital pancreatic cancer research and patient support. The sixth annual tournament takes place Wednesday, July 6 at ClubLink’s The Country Club in Woodbridge. The Country Club opened in 1965 with the East and West 18-hole championship courses designed by acclaimed Canadian architect Howard Watson. The holes were later fine-tuned by Arthur Hills, Arnold Palmer’s most famous design partner. The club has played host to a number of prestigious tournaments, and the Ruth Farb Charity is proud to be able to host the

tournament at this stunning course. Registration includes 18 holes of golf with cart (scramble best-ball format, hole-in-one and skill contests) as well as lunch and an awards gala dinner. Golfers are welcome to bring guests to the awards dinner, also taking place at The Country Club in the spectacular clubhouse. Early bird pricing to register for the event ends May 31. If you would like to make a difference in the fight to end pancreatic cancer, but are unable to attend the event, you are encouraged to become a sponsor at the tournament or make a donation in Ruth’s memory. For more information and to register for the tournament visit www.pancreaticcancercanada. ca/6th_Annual_Ruth_Farb_Golf or contact Murray Farb, at 416-697-7497, and Allen Koffman at 416-745-3532.

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Q A

It feels amazing. I’ve gotten notes from young women and mothers and parents of young girls telling me that I’ve inspired them to cook and believe in their dreams and that honestly means so, so much to me.

Q

This time around you and Jeremy had time to think about the dishes you wanted to prepare for the judges, when did you start thinking about it?

A

These menus were designed by us. There was no set time to start thinking about it, but I started thinking about it when I was in the Top 5. Never in a million years did I think I would get even there. Once it hit I realized that I should maybe start considering the possibility that I might make it to the finale and start thinking about... those courses.

Q

You lost your dad at very young age, how do you think he feels about you sharing his and your love of cooking with the world and winning this competition?

A

He would be so proud of me and I know he’s proud of me. My mom and I had a couple cries... he was such an amazing cook and like me he just wanted to share food with people.

Q A

What’s next for you?

There’s a project in development with Proper television with Bell Media and I’m quite excited about that.

GRANDY, Donald William Formerly of Peterborough. Passed away on June 17th at Mackenzie Health Regional Hospital in his 90th year. Beloved husband of Lillian (wed 1948), of the Oak Ridges Retirement Community, formerly of Peterborough. Donald was the son of the late Orril and Marjory Grandy of Omemee and dear brother to Ruth Johnson (Ted) of Toronto. After 41 successful years of employment as a Mechanical Draftsman with the Canadian General Electric Co. in Peterborough, he enjoyed 29 years of happy retirement at the family cottage on Paudash Lake, while volunteering many hours with St. James United Church. He especially enjoyed working on the sets for the plays performed by the ever-popular St. James Players. He will be dearly missed by his son, Robert Donald William Grandy, his daughter, Karyn Diane Banwell (Eric Bloksma) and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Krysta Gutteridge (Jay), and their children Lillian and Benjamin, Melissa Tilley (Brinley) and their son Reid, and David Banwell (Jenny). Funeral service will be held at St. James United Church, 221 Romaine Street (at Aylmer Street), Peterborough, Ontario, on Wednesday, June 29th, at 2pm. The Reverend Julie van Haaften will conduct the service. Interment at Little Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. James United Church would be greatly appreciated.
