When Reg Parker had a double lung and liver transplant a year ago, he had his wife and two sons by his side, along with the support of 17 other boys.

The Etobicoke resident and coach of the Humber Valley Sharks suffered lung and liver failure last March and underwent organ transplant surgery at Toronto General Hospital (TGH). Parker was in surgery for 20 hours and woke up from an induced coma four days after the procedure. After 12 weeks of being in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit on a feeding tube,

Parker was able to go home.

“The day I went home was probably, I would say, the fourth best day of my life. I say that because my marriage was one of the best days of my life and (the birth of ) my two kids,” Parker said. “The feeling was indescribable, being able to go home and be with my family again.”

The Etobicoke Community Concert Band marks its 20th anniversary with its 20 Years of Great Music...Right in Your Own Backyard concert Friday, March 27 at 8 p.m. at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, 86 Montgomery Rd. Longtime CBC Radio host Rick MacInnes-Rae will MC. MacInnes-Rae may be tapped to introduce the Star Trek pieces in the renowned voice of another Scotsman — legendary actor Sean Connery, band president Rob Hunter said.

“We’ll be doing all the Star Trek themes, Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck, Moe Koffman. Then the swing band will play three tunes by Glenn Miller, Count Basie and one called, The Chicken, by Jaco Pastorius,” Hunter said.

“Our audience likes swing music. After our first concert this year in November with the Toronto All-Star Big Band, we got a standing ovation. It was fabulous.”

In 1995, a small group of enthusiastic musicians saw the need for a local band.

Etobicoke Community Concert Band was born.

They sought out professional trumpeter and conductor John Liddle, who remains the band’s music director, and began to rehearse.

“They wanted a group where neighbours could share the joy of making and hearing great music with one another that would use music to build the idea of community,” Hunter said.

The band played its first concert that same year at the opening of the trail in Col. Samuel Smith Park at the foot of Kipling Avenue.

It soon became an innovator. The band pioneered the idea of a formal series featuring local guest artists, including True North Brass, Chris Donnelly, Heather Bambrick and Russ Little.

The band presents Humber College jazz graduate and saxophonist Jake Koffman at its two-decade anniversary concert later this month, Koffman will play a tribute to his late grandfather, Toronto jazz icon Moe Koffman.

Hunter, also a saxophonist, began playing with Etobicoke Community Concert Band six years ago and soon after, became its president.

“I enjoy it. I love music. It keeps me involved,” Hunter said. “You meet all kinds of great people.”

The band performs theatre shows, local fundraisers, galas, as well as its annual, popular Concert in the Park summer series rain or shine Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Applewood Homestead.

The band’s Applewood concerts take place this year on June 24, July 8 and July 22 with a pipe band after Applewood officials struck an agreement with Toronto parks, recreation and forestry staff over concert parking on the grass.

It continues to play sheet music donated by Hunter’s

alma mater, Royal York Collegiate, after it played its closing ceremonies in June 1982. It became Etobicoke School of the Arts in 1983.

Its repertoire is renowned for its eclecticism. “ We’ve played music from the films Frozen and Despicable Me. We have a celebrity read Twas the Night Before Christmas to our musical backup every year at our Christmas concert,” Hunter said.

“We play music for young and old; kids, seniors, young adults. We try to touch everyone somewhere at some time.

Everything from Broadway to Big Band to concert music to marches, a lot of movie themes, Ray Charles, Elvis.

We cover the gamut.”

The concert band of 54 musicians and swing band of 20 regularly seeks new musicians.

It rehearses Wednesday nights at Etobicoke Collegiate.

“This band has a lot of really good professionals, all fabulous musicians who are volunteer members,” Hunter said. “The music is challenging.”

West Toronto Stamp Club marks 80 years of philatelic passion

Modern-day collectors now have access to online resources to uncover stamps’ history CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Eighty years to the day after its first official meeting on March 10, 1935, the West Toronto Stamp Club celebrated the fact that it’s still thriving after eight decades – today boasting 88 current members ranging in age from 14 to 96.

To mark the club’s milestone 80th year, longtime West Toronto Stamp Club (WTSC) executive member and club historian Frank Alusio put together a special display for the Tuesday, March 10 anniversary meeting at Fairfield Seniors Centre. “I prepared a display of 36 pages of the history of the club and all the memorabilia that we had, including a photograph of the house where the founders first met on Indian Road,� said Alusio, noting that, after his presentation, he and another longtime WTSC member were recognized for their 50-year anniversaries with the club, while another member was honoured for 25 years. “That shows you how people like this club, that they would stick around that long.�

As when it was first founded, the WTSC is one that continues to welcome stamp collectors of every level of interest – from serious philatelists, including four current members who have been named fellows of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada, to casual hobbyists, who simply collect for the love of stamps, added Chris Edwards, a member of the WTSC board of directors who heads up the club’s membership.

“Those are the two ends of the spectrum of collectors, and our club has a mix of both and everything in between,� he said.

For Edwards, 80, stamp collecting is a passion he first took up as a boy while attending boarding school in England and returned to upon his retirement about 15 years ago, when he happened upon a WTSC booth at Cloverdale Mall and signed up.

In the years in between, Edwards said, the art and science of philately has been much changed by the advent of the internet. “When I was kid, I had an album, I got a stamp, I put it in a space – I didn’t really worry much about the actual stamps themselves, it was all about filling that album. But today with the internet, there’s a huge

amount of resources available for collectors online,� he said. “The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada, the American Philatelic Society, the British Society – all have great big websites with all sorts of information online, which anyone can start digging into. You can dig your way into the history of stamps, when they were printed, how they were printed, the printing method, the adhesives, and the whole thing.

These days you look beyond the stamp; the stamp is just the thing that opens the door.�

One of the recent philatelic door openers for Edwards personally was a ‘cover’ (a term in philately that refers to the outside of an envelope or package with an address and postage stamps) he procured of a 1932 letter from South Africa to England, from the first air mail service between those two countries.

“It’s the one I really concentrate on,� Edwards said, noting that his research into the cover has uncovered who the letter was from, what route the letter took, the number of planes it took to deliver it, and even the names of the pilots who carried the letter on their flights. “And that, I think, kind of sums what stamp collecting is today, in the modern, more interesting way to do it. It’s taking it way beyond just the piece of paper that you stick on an envelope.�

The club meets every Tuesday evening from the beginning of September until the end of June at Etobicoke’s Fairfield Seniors Centre, 80 Lothian Ave. Visitors always welcome.

Mulcair’s support for city gives Tory leverage

I

t is a good thing that former Ontario Progressive Conservative party leader John Tory is taking the non-partisan part of his job so seriously. Otherwise, his meeting with federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair would have been very awkward indeed.

Mulcair came to Toronto early this week bearing gifts – or at least the promise of gifts. The leader of Canada’s official opposition told a crowd at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, effectively, that Toronto was his and his party’s favourite: that the city and the region were the most important in Canada, and that money and attention would flow here from a federal NDP government.

To specifics: the NDP would create 164,000 new affordable daycare spots in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) over the next eight years; the minimum wage

david nickle the city would be set federally at $15 an hour; and the GTA would receive $90 million a year more in funding from an increased share of the gas tax.

This is powerful stuff.

Affordable daycare and a higher minimum wage would mitigate the income inequality that is degrading the city.

The $90 million in gas tax money would go a long way to improving and just maintaining the sputtering Toronto Transit Commission system.

Poverty and transportation have been widely identified as pressing issues for Torontonians, and Mayor John Tory has put both of those things at the top of his to-do list for the coming term of council.

Tory and Mulcair met

Monday at Toronto City Hall, the day following Mulcair’s speech. The two faced TV cameras and reporters immediately afterward, comfortably side-by-side and clearly on the same page.

Our mayor was generous in his praise for the policy, but careful. He noted that the gas tax promise was one that built on transit funding that had been initiated by the Liberals and enshrined by the Conservative government.

It was more, and that was good.

And it was hard not to like that notion that Toronto was the most important place in Canada – that being a song Tory’s been singing for some time.

Still, Tory wouldn’t endorse – and he would likely be foolish to do so.

Mulcair and the NDP are the Official Opposition in only the most tenuous sense; the party gained its

unprecedented influence under the irreplaceable leadership of the late Jack Layton. The promises Mulcair made are really more powerful as ideas right now than they are as likely outcomes.

But for now, that is all right.

Mulcair has put forward the best and most reasonable federal agenda for cities since another unlikely Prime Minister, Paul Martin, almost a decade ago. It is the agenda that others will be held against – and that they will have to at least address if they hope to gain foothold in this vote-rich region.

And that gives Mayor Tory some leverage, in an arena where until recently it seemed as though he had very little.

Proponent groups will work on design development for approximately six months, then meet with Osler officials for feedback before bids will be evaluated, a preferred proponent named and negotiations begun, Ford said.

Osler is undertaking a somewhat parallel process to build an ambulatory services building in front of Etobicoke General.

Last week, Osler released an RFP to qualifying bidders.

The 200,000-square-foot medical building will operate all outpatient care; as many as 36 dialysis stations, and a number of outpatient clinics, including seniors’ wellness, mental health and addiction, COPD and cardiac.

Construction will begin first on the ambulatory services building. Near its completion, the build will commence on the patient tower.

Etobicoke General’s redevelopment is estimated to be completed in 10 years, Ford said.

Osler has entered into a memorandum of understanding with nearby Humber College to offer continuing education to nurses and allied health professionals, such

as pharmacists and physiotherapists, in the new medical building.

Humber students could also benefit from “real-life experience,” such as operating an eyeglass store in an optometrist’s office, Ford said.

Early works projects to upgrade the 43-year-old hospital building’s mechanics to serve the four-storey tower, include upgrading chillers and the boiler, installing a new generator, as well as upgrading heat, air conditioning, water and electrical systems.

Osler’s emergency departments are among the busiest in Canada. Etobicoke General’s emergency department was built to serve as many as 40,000 patients annually. Today, it see more than 70,000 patients a year.

Osler’s labour and delivery program is one of the largest in Ontario.

The Ontario government funds 90 per cent of Osler’s new buildings’ construction costs. Osler must fund

100 per cent of new medical equipment, computers and furniture, Ford said.

A capital campaign to fundraise for the Etobicoke General redevelopment will be undertaken in the next few years.

In 2013, Osler’s volunteer association pledged $3 million to Etobicoke General’s redevelopment. Osler’s annual golf tournament also raises tens of thousands of dollars toward the builds.

Last November, Orlando Corporation pledged as much as $15 million to Osler hospitals in a matching challenge gift. It is the single largest gift to a Canadian community hospital, Osler officials reported.

“Two golds and one bronze on the highest stage over the last three years is awesome,” said Art Pietras, who coaches the team along with Rick Bianco, in an email update.

While the team, seeded first for the third straight year, could have been “totally down”

for the bronze medal match he said the “Cardinals played back to their number one form and handily defeated a very good Crothers team three sets straight.”

Earlier in the day, in the semifinal, Bishop Allen were tantalizingly close to victory, up 14-11 in the fifth and deciding set (which goes to 15, while all the other ones go to 21, and you have to win by two points) but ended up losing 19-17, a victim of a comeback by seventh-ranked Maxwell Heights Secondary School from Oshawa.

Ironically, Bishop Allen had pulled off its own comeback in the match dropping the first two games 27-25, 25-21 before winning the next two 25-11, 25-21 to force the fifth and final game).

March 26 marks the oneyear anniversary of Parker’s surgery and to commemorate it, The Canadian Blood Services and Parker are hosting a OneMatch swab event for people ages 17 to 35 on Tuesday, March 31 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Holy Angels’ Roman Catholic Church on 61 Jutland Rd. At the event, participants will register on the list of stem cell donors by swabbing the inside of their mouth with a cotton swab.

Stem cell transplants help to treat various life-threatening blood diseases, including leukemia.

The past year has been emotionally trying for Parker and his family.

“It’s been very difficult, especially because I’ve just gone through my fourth hospital stay in the last two months,” Parker told The Guardian during an interview last Friday. “So it’s hard for my boys. It’s a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs – the ups are great because I’m at home, we’re living our lives relatively normal ... but when I’m down, I’m in the hospital and it’s a constant worry for our young boys and my wife.”

But it’s not just the immediate family that worries.

Parker said that he received emails while he was in the hospital and during his continued physiotherapy, from a lot of the boys he coaches, wishing him well and offering assistance.

To put Parker’s surgery into context, in 2014 alone, TGH performed more than 100 lung transplants and over 200 liver transplants. The hospital has performed only eight double lung and liver combination transplants in its history; four of the seven patients before Parker did not make it out of the ICU. Now Parker is on a mission to raise awareness of

the importance of organ and blood donation, as well as stem cell donation. Although Parker did not have to use stem cell donations himself, he relied on blood donors from the Canadian Blood Services during his transplant. “ Thir ty-three people saved my life on the day of my transplant; 32 of them were blood donors and one person was an organ donor,” Parker said.

Along with the OneMatch event, Parker also has his own fundraising project. At the

start of this month, Parker began fundraising for new physiotherapy equipment at the hospital, which was critical to his recovery. He also wants to renovate the patient and family lounge room on the post-transplant floor.

“It’s terrific, it’s a huge boost for us and we certainly commend Reg on his endeavors,” said Christian Cote, a spokesman for the University Health Network, which TGH falls under. “First of all for his health, and also the fact that he’s inspired to raise funds for us.”

Thanks to some generous sponsors, Parker has raised $17,000 after just two weeks of fundraising, he said. Now he’s asking for the community’s help to reach his goal of $25,000.

Police make arrest in 2007 robbery Police made an arrest this week in connection with a nearly eight-year-old robbery investigation in Etobicoke. The West Way Food Mart, located at Royal York Road and The West Way, was robbed on Friday, March 30, 2007. Investigators allege that the accused entered the store that day at around 11:41 a.m. with his face disguised, pulled a knife and then vaulted the counter,

confronting the victim.

The accused then demanded and received cash and cigarettes, before fleeing the scene.

As a result of an investigation by the Toronto Police Hold Up Squad, the man was identified and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Wednesday, March 11, Malachi Brady, 29, of Toronto, was arrested by the Fugitive Squad and investi-

gated by Hold Up. He is now facing charges of: robbery; disguise with intent; and weapons dangerous.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, March 12.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85-Alive” program in Ontario.

The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet.

The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.”

But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.”

Nonetheless, homeowners like Anita P. don’t see a prob-

lem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.”

Newtonbrook and West Humber medal in OFSAA wrestling

HIGHLIGHTS: The senior girls volleyball team at James S. Bell has much to celebrate, coming out of a great season, winning four team banners for the school, two crests, a gold medal and a city silver medal for each team member. Most recently at the city championships at Variety Village in Scarborough, the girls defeated the south champion from Deer Park in straight sets. In the finals for the city championship, the girls fell just short in 3 sets to Joseph Howe, the east champion.

Two Toronto schools earned team medals at the provincial high school wrestling championships in Windsor March 3 and 4: a silver medal for the girls team from North York’s Newtonbrook Secondary and a bronze medal for the boys team from Etobicoke’s West Humber Collegiate.

Last year the West Humber boys finished just off the podium in fourth place.

For Newtonbrook, a perennial wrestling powerhouse in Toronto, it was their first Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship team medal since the boys won bronze in 2012.

The two schools boasted Toronto’s only individual medal winners.

Newtonbrook was led by one gold-medal winner

(Roshane Palmer, in 115 kg division, improving upon last year’s silver medal) and one silver-medal winner (Kelsey Hall, 57.5 kg) with Jordi Dinardo, 61 kg, finishing just off the podium in fourth place. west humber The West Humber boys team was led by two goldmedal winners (repeat gold medalist Javir Boal, 95 kg; and Sunny Narwal, 130 kg, who improved upon last year’s silver medal) and one bronze medalist (Tejvir Boal, 89 kg) with Bobby Narwal finishing just off the podium in fourth place in 77 kg.

Also just missing the podium, in fourth place, for the girls, was Emma Howard of University of Toronto

Schools in 57.5 kg.

Police step up patrols during Tips for winter driving March Break safety crackdown The Toronto Police Service has launched a safety blitz for pedestrians through March Break.

As part of the March Safe campaign, police are pledging to pay special attention not only to jaywalkers, but also vehicles making conditions unsafe for law-abiding pedestrians.

According to a news release for the campaign, at least half of all fatal collisions involve pedestrians, of which there were 31 in 2014.

“All officers will be paying particular attention to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who commit traffic violations that may jeopardize pedestrian safety,” reads the release.

Police seek public’s help after two shootings hours apart Men taken to hospital after being shot at same highrise TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Toronto police are seeking the public’s help after a man suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds in the second shooting of the day Tuesday at an apartment building near Islington Avenue and Dixon Road.

Paramedics and police got a call at 8:15 p.m. for a shooting at 2063 Islington Ave., the same highrise building police were called to five hours earlier for another shooting.

A man with multiple gunshot wounds was found at the back of the building.

He was transported to a trauma centre with life-

threatening injuries.

Police and paramedics were called to the same apartment building, across the street from Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, for a shooting at 3:18 p.m.

March 17.

To r o n t o Co m m u n i t y Housing staff found a man in his 20s with a gunshot

wound.

He was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police released no details of suspects in either shooting.

The neighbourhood was the scene of a double fatal shooting last October.

It was a big night for Craft Ontario.

On Saturday, the not-for-profit organization announced its Citizens of Craft movement that aims to reclaim the word ‘craft’.

“It’s a movement for everybody,” said Emma Quin, executive director

of Craft Ontario “It’s for those who are keen to develop their own style and aesthetic. It’s for makers, it’s for appreciators, and it’s for collectors. It’s for anyone who really values the quality of the handmade.”

Renforth Gateway Mobility Hub Metrolinx has begun construction on the next segment of the Mississauga Transitway project – the Renforth Gateway Mobility Hub. This easternmost segment of the transitway will integrate rapid transit and bus services for GO Transit, MiWay and the TTC near Toronto Pearson International Airport.

The Renforth Gateway Mobility Hub project will include approximately 2.6 kilometres of dedicated corridor and overpasses/bridges at Commerce Boulevard, Eglinton Avenue, Renforth Drive and Matheson Boulevard East.

The station design includes a new building with washrooms and other customer amenities, heated shelters, a temporary Kiss ‘N Ride, bus platforms with ticket vending machines and information boards, bicycle shelters and accessible elevators to improve customer comfort and convenience.

Open House Metrolinx has organized an open house to update residents on the Renforth Gateway segment of the Mississauga Transitway.

Residents will learn more about the project, how it will benefit the local community, construction impacts and project timelines.

The goal of the movement is to “broaden everybody’s ability to make a more successful living as a craftsperson,” Quin said.

“Ultimately, as we support craft people, we want to make a more meaningful career for them and have more opportunities for markets.”

According to Quin, the website launch is Phase 1 of the movement, which includes a geo-site finder where community members can search for local craft products in their surrounding area.

“It’s time we take craft and move it to the forefront,” she said.

“It’s really important we emphasize that deep understanding and awareness and an appreciation for what craft is in our community.”
