Jane’s Walk returns to Toronto streets for 10th year

ot a day goes by that Halle Glen, a Grade 11 student at Etobicoke’s Silverthorn Collegiate Institute, doesn’t think about her best friend Abby Fedosoff.

It’s been just more than a year since Abby, a competitive swimmer, writer, and artist, committed suicide. She was only 15.

Still, when Glen hears her friend’s name or catches a glimpse of someone’s long, blond hair, it’s a shock to her system.

“She is always on my mind,” Glen said.

Glen wished she’d known just how much pain Abby was in. Many of her friends and teachers had no idea the Markland Woods-area resident was living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), an illness Abby kept secret.

“I would have done anything in my power to help her,” said Glen, revealing she believed her friend kept her illness to herself for fear of what people would think.

That’s why Glen is participating in the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s (CAMH) ‘One Brave Night,’ an all-night challenge to raise awareness of and funds to defeat mental illness, which takes place Friday, May 13. Glen called Abby, “one of the most amazing people I knew,” on her online CAMH One Brave Night Personal Page.

“She was beautiful, kind, loving and compassionate,” wrote Glen, adding she was a fan of the group One Direction, loved dogs, her family and friends.

No one is immune to mental illness, said Dr. Katy Kamkar, a psychologist at CAMH and an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Toronto. One in five Canadians will experience mental illness or addiction in their lifetime, yet two thirds of those say they feel alone, Kamkar said.

“It touches every single person either directly or indirectly,” she said.

CAMH’s all-night challenge is an evolution of an event that was initiated last year called ‘From Darkness to Light,’ which raised more than $700,000 in support of Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital and research centre.

One Brave Night challenges participants to stay up all night because people living with mental illness indicate that nighttime is the most difficult for them, Kamkar said. The goal is to reduce the stigma of mental health as well as the suffering in silence while raising funds and encouraging people to seek treatment. Kamkar treats clients with a variety of mental health issues, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety and stress disorders as well as occupational trauma. She said it’s important to provide loved ones with the proper support – listen, ask how they’re doing, go with them to medical appointments and perhaps, most importantly, show the right attitude.

“Attitudes can be harmful. Saying things like, ‘Relax, you’ll get over it’ or ‘You’ll get better,’ any of these can feed the stigma,” Kamkar said.

“They can make people feel guilty and reduces their sense of self-worth and prolongs recovery. Show empathy instead. Provide the care that’s needed.”

After Abby died, Glen’s sister, Kendall, revealed she had been hiding

a mental illness. Once she shared what she was facing, her family and friends rallied around her.

“My sister has a good support system,” Glen said. “I think the key is to find one person who you’re comfortable with to talk to.”

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadian youth, according to Statistics Canada 2014 data.

Youth who die by suicide are frequently experiencing an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness, Government of Canada stats say.

“Young people ages 15 to 24 are most likely to experience mental illness or substance abuse than any other age group in Canada,” Kamkar said. “After accidents, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 10 to 19 year olds.”

CAMH is home to the Slaight Family Centre for Youth in Transition. This is Canada’s first centre dedicated to understanding and treating severe mental illness and addictions in youth from the late teens through early adulthood and a world first. It combines research and clinical care to advance new approaches for early intervention and recovery.

CAMH treats more than 30,000 people and responds to more than 500,000 outpatient visits annually. Its ER sees about 7,400 patients each year, a 76 per cent increase since 2006.

CAMH provides specialized treatment for psychosis episodes, early Alzheimer’s disease, drug addiction and depression, children with behavioural issues and people with schizophrenia, among a host of other ailments.

CAMH boasts as many as 3,000 physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, researchers, educators, volunteers and students and has recruited world-renowned, award-winning specialists to many of its clinical programs and research initiatives.

Glen’s ‘Team Abby’ has already raised more than $2,300 toward One Brave Night and pledge money is still coming in after an April 18 swimathon.

The teen, who lives on the BramptonMississauga border, said she and at least 20 of her friends are ready for a night of air hockey, ping pong and, if the weather permits, swimming.

We must adapt to condo boom T

here’s a shift taking place in Toronto that really should not come as a surprise given the amount of condominium construction happening in our city. One need only look at the number of cranes, not just downtown, but also in other parts of the city, to recognize this building boom.

But the stereotype regarding the people who these condos are being built for is changing rapidly in Toronto.

They are no longer the choice for young people, seniors and those looking to be landlords. More and more families are saying no to the so-called suburban dream of a house and yard, and are choosing to buy condos and raise their families in them.

Certainly some of this is driven by price, and the fact that single-family homes in Toronto are becoming more and more out of reach for many. For some, condo life is strictly a financial our view decision, but for many others it’s become a lifestyle preference.

As Amy Geer told Metroland Wise to plan Media Toronto of the decision she for ‘vertical and her husband Andy made to buy a two-bedroom condo in the communities’ Fort York area, it was a question of financial balance and the kind of life they wanted to live.

“If we bought a house we wouldn’t be able to afford a baby; a condo would allow us to have the lifestyle and the baby,” she said.

And that’s changing the way the City of Toronto’s planning department has to think and operate. The planning department initiated the study Growing Up: Planning for Children in New Vertical Communities as it works on ways to deal with what will be the increasing needs of families with children in what had previously been condo communities geared to adult residents.

The study is looking at how these high-density condo communities can better accommodate “households with children and youth.” That’s an issue for the present, and it will certainly raise some challenges as many of these communities are lacking in both recreational and educational spaces nearby.

This shift also puts pressure on Toronto’s public and Catholic school boards, which will find themselves with growing numbers of students living nowhere near schools, while many schools in established “suburban” neighbourhoods are seeing severely declining enrolment.

As our city changes, so must we change the way we think, plan and adapt.

Tory well versed to take on raccoons

I

was struck last week, attending the official launch of Toronto’s new raccoon-proof green bins on a lovely, quiet street in Scarborough, at just how suitable the event was to the talents of our current mayor, John Tory.

That may sound mean, but I don’t intend it to be. When Tory arrived at the foot of the driveway of Scarborough resident Rhoda Potter, the host of the launch event, he could not have been more charming, or dare we say it, funny.

He joked around with the city sanitation worker who was driving the truck. He kidded around with Ms. Potter, who was demonstrating her own raccoon-proofing on her green bin as a contrast with the city’s new, Atlanta-designed higher tech solution (Ms. Potter used a rock and a bungee cord). He kidded around with reporters while demonstrating the even

david nickle the city higher-tech robot arm that is designed to lift the green bin into the sky and dump its offal in the truck from a height even raccoons would find dizzying.

At least we think he was kidding when he suggested one of us try the robot arm.

The whole event went like one of those stand-up comedy routines that ask the audience if they’ve ever noticed how absurd something-or-other is, how irritating whoeverwe’re-irritated-with is or (as in this case) how darn cute and clever whateveris-vexing-us is.

It occurs to me that this is one of the most formidable skills that Tory brings to the job of mayor, in the post-Rob Ford Toronto: the ability to be pleasant and funny, an ability honed no doubt

by his years hosting talk radio, and one that has lent the mayor a great advantage with the public.

It is no coincidence that Tory’s biggest successes fall into this category, too, first pointing out, and then dealing with, the many small irritants in city life.

One of Tory’s first acts as mayor was to announce a towing blitz on those darned cars that keep parking illegally on downtown streets during rush hour. Don’t you hate those?

And isn’t it absurd to pay the equivalent of a meal out, to haul your kids onto the subway for a Sunday trip? Free rides for children was the answer to that.

And then there was the business of the raccoons.

They’re comedy gold, those clever little, erm, bandits. Dealing with the ingenuity of raccoons has turned us all into hapless coyotes trying to catch a road runner, and Tory is

more than happy to deliver the ACME raccoon-proof bin, that (like all ACME products in Road Runner cartoons) looks raccoon proof, if possibly not fool proof.

It made for a breezy and pleasant afternoon last week, having a bit of fun in Scarborough with Ms. Potter, commiserating about a silly but still troublesome problem and offering up a simple solution. As I write this, I’m watching Toronto Council try and figure out another troublesome problem – the city’s coyote-and-roadrunner relationship with UberX, and the troubled taxi industry.

If only the solution to this problem were as simple as building a better green bin, our excellent mayor would know just what to do.

But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly!

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies.

Jeff Healey Park musical equipment strikes an irksome chord for some The musical playground equipment at an Etobicoke park named after a late, great blues guitarist has apparently been striking a sour note with nearby residents.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Justin Di Ciano has called a community meeting for tonight to discuss noise complaints stemming from Jeff Healey Park.

The meeting is slated to take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic School, 45 Cloverhill Rd. In a notice to residents, Di Ciano said city staff will be on hand to address concerns over the noise and to provide recommendations.

The first phase of Jeff Healey Park – which included new play structures, slides, a climber, swing set, spring toys and benches – opened in 2010, two years after its Grammy Award-nominated and Juno Award-winning namesake died at age 41

I

n the new climate of rising public scrutiny of the conditions of zoo animals, some zoos are struggling while others are flourishing.

Jennifer Tracey, senior director of communications for the Toronto Zoo, said institutions that have been entrusted with wildlife should be held to high standards. Modern zoos feature exhibits designed to match each animal’s specific habitat and programs are tied to conservation and education.

At the Oshawa Zoo and Fun Farm, attendance was up 25 per cent last year compared to the year before because of social media marketing and a new focus on domestic animals. While there are still some exotic animals at the zoo, years ago the owners decided to move away from exotic animals to feature more farm animals.

“When I was a kid, everyone’s grandmother and grandfather had a farm. We don’t see that anymore,” said Alan Connell, owner of the Oshawa Zoo, who wanted to provide that farm animal education for children. “Kids get more attached to farm animals.

Exotic animals have a mean streak to them and we decided to go with a children’s zoo.”

The Oshawa Zoo is geared for younger children up to Grade 2, but older children and even adults without children enjoy visiting, said Connell. He said the zoo is popular because

Connell said animal rights activists haven’t protested the Oshawa Zoo. He thinks protesters are valuable and actually help zoo owners continually improve life for the animals – whether it’s building bigger pens or making sure the pens are interesting for the animals.

“We built a goat run last year,” said Connell. “They love it. We weren’t sure whether they’d use the slide but we had goats jumping on it while we were trying to install it.”

Last year was a tough year for the Bowmanville Zoo, with protests, investigations and charges against owner Michael Hackenberger. In April, Hackenberger was charged with five counts of cruelty to animals in relation to a video released last December. The video clip released by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) appeared to show Hackenberger whipping a tiger during training.

In a video rebuttal posted online in late 2015, Hackenberger said he could be accused of viciously whipping the ground or the air, but not the tiger. He said he hit the

animal three times, once on the paw when it was reaching to claw another trainer. He will be back in court in early June to answer to the charges.

In August, the zoo owner was criticized for swearing at a baboon during a live Breakfast Television broadcast on CITY-TV. PETA’s broad stance is that wild animals belong in the wild, and when they can’t be in the wild, they belong in reputable sanctuaries, said Brittany Peet, department director of captive animal law enforcement for PETA. Peet said wild animals forced to live in small enclosures suffer psychological harm.

However, Tracey said the public needs to understand the critical role accredited zoos, such as the Toronto facility located in Scarborough, play in ensuring the survival of so many species.

“When the zoo first opened, it was believed the planet was losing one or two species each year. In 2014, the World Wildlife Fund stated that we are now losing one to three species a day. It is statistics like these that drive the professional staff at the Toronto Zoo to do more to save and protect species,” said Tracey The Toronto Zoo wants to take this one step further – to become a zoo-based conservation centre of excellence. Toronto Zoo accreditation facts

T

he Toronto Zoo lost accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 2012 after Toronto Council voted to send the zoo’s three remaining elephants to a sanctuary in California.

The U.S.-based accreditation agency dropped the zoo because the sanctuary was not AZA-accredited, and council overruled the zoo’s management board, which wanted to send the elephants to an AZA facility. Political interference over the care of animals was understood to be behind AZA’s decision.

The zoo is now back in the good graces of the association. The body granted the zoo membership at a March meeting, and since then an AZA official presented management with a plaque in person.

Toronto Zoo spokesperson Jennifer Tracey said the AZA looked favourably at the zoo’s master planning exercise, and its work toward establishing an independent fundraising body. The zoo, she added, hopes to open an “awesome” replacement next year for its animal hospital, whose “major deficiencies” were said to have concerned AZA before a rebuilding effort was launched.

Changes in store for historic High Park Zoo with new master plan announced

he vision of the Friends of High Park Zoo is to ensure there is always a free community zoo in High Park for families to enjoy.

Established in 1893 for deer, the zoo’s animal paddocks have always been a popular attraction. Today, the zoo’s 11 paddocks are home to a variety of animal species from around the world: bison, llamas, peacocks, reindeer, highland cattle, wallabies, emus and sheep.

Friends of High Park Zoo was formed in 2012 to raise funds to ensure that the zoo remained open in the wake of city budget cuts for the 2012 and 2013 operating years.

Now, the west-end attraction is looking forward to a facelift, in the form a new master plan, announced in January. Enhancements include increasing the size of the bison pen by seven metres, creating a new administrative building, improving lighting, and installing flags and signs so that the zoo is more noticeable. The plan also looks to improve the experience for the animals with creative furnishings such as ponds and interactive feeders.

n 1894, the Riverdale Zoo opened to become Toronto’s first zoo, but it was closed in 1974 with the animals relocated to the new Metro Zoo in Scarborough (now the Toronto Zoo). The site was restored as a farm to provide city children the chance to see how a farm works.

In 2013, the Riverdale Farm Stewardship Group was formed to seek out sustainable funding, create new learning opportunities, and develop the farm’s financial opportunities.

‘Idiot’ sorry for overtaking streetcar A self-professed “idiot” motorist apologized this week for cutting off riders disembarking a TTC streetcar.

As detailed in a Reddit post published Monday, the user blamed a “lapse in judgement” for overtaking a stopped 504 King streetcar at Strachan Avenue as passengers got off.

“I honestly had a lapse in judgement and instead of stopping when the streetcar slowed, I continued moving and as such endangered the people getting off,” states the penitent motorist.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, all vehicles must leave at least two metres of space from the nearest doors of a stationary streetcar.

The choices, whittled down from 884 public entries, were unveiled last week as the finalists of an online contest for the planned 1.75 kilometres of continuous public space under the Gardiner Expressway, from Strachan to Spadina avenues.

Announced last year by the city, the $25-million project is fully funded through a private donation. Waterfront Toronto is co-ordinating construction and hoping to have it done by mid-2017.

The foundation for the country’s foremost environmentalist has come out in strong support of a proposal to install the first bike lanes on Bloor Street.

Ahead of city council’s vote

on the matter (expected to have taken place yesterday), the David Suzuki Foundation is calling on residents to petition city councillors and Mayor John Tory in support of a pilot project to install painted bike lanes on Bloor between Shaw Street and Avenue Road.

Installation of the smartfare technology is well underway with Presto set to be available throughout the TTC network by the end of the year.

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said 19 buses from the transit commission’s Queensway garage have the readers so far, and all 1,895 vehicles are expected to be online as of summer.

Toronto Council approves new ground transportation bylaw Mayor John Tory puts more than 100 amendments forward DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Council has approved a new ground transportation bylaw that will let licensed taxis use a version of surge pricing for trips booked with smartphones, remove training requirements for drivers and maintain the old standard taxi plate system that lets taxi licenses be bought and sold for six figure prices.

At the heart of the new rules was a set of more than 100 amendments put forward by Mayor John Tory, after more than a week of behind-thescenes negotiations with councillors across the political spectrum. But according to councillors on the left, Tory at the last minute abandoned a set of resolutions that would have levelled the playing field between ride hailing companies like Uber and licensed cab

drivers.

“To say that I’m sad today is an understatement. I can’t believe that I got up this morning thinking I had a solution to this problem and I’ll go to bed with tears,” said Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor and Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell.

“I’m really disappointed because I know people worked really hard trying to find a resolution,” said Toronto CentreRosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam. “I’m forced to vote against the mayor’s motions because it doesn’t do what I had wanted to do. We are creating a system that’s going to become worse.”

Wong-Tam and McConnell were in the minority. Council approved a bylaw that does create some level playing field by removing many regulations that taxi brokers must currently live by.

Tory’s amendments removed training requirements that have drivers learn CPR and other skills. Taxi companies would also be able to use a variation on the surge pricing that Uber has used – but with a cap.

But Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks said the plan did nothing to protect consumers or to protect drivers.

“All the things that protect the consumer being changed here will be harmonized down,” said Perks. “The public lose, the drivers lose, the billionaires and millionaires win. You should be ashamed if you vote for this package.” The committee also supported a motion to look at cutting the cost of standard plate renewals by 75 per cent and compensating plate owners who may have lost money on their investments due to changes in market conditions.

Police release security footage in plea for witnesses in murder of Saed Keyliye, 17 TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The Toronto police homicide unit released surveillance camera footage of the outside of an apartment building at 551 The West Mall in a plea for witnesses in the stabbing murder of Saed Keyliye in early February.

Keyliye, 17, accompanied by two friends, met with two men outside the apartment building just before 7 p.m. on Feb. 3, lead homicide investigator Det. Andy Singh said at a news conference Monday, May 2 at Toronto police headquarters.

Shortly after the men met, there was an altercation, which resulted in Keyliye being stabbed, Singh said, adding Keyliye’s friends were not injured.

Keyliye was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We’re asking for the public’s assistance in helping us identify the two suspects seen in video here...” Singh said.

That vehicle is described as a four-door grey Honda Civic.

The two suspects are described as brown males in their late teens, 5’8” to 5’10” tall with dark hair and thin builds.

Singh said he is still appealing for witnesses.

Taxi driver wanted for alleged sexual assault during NBA All-Star weekend Police have released a security camera image of a man wanted in connection with an alleged sexual assault at an Etobicoke hotel over the NBA All-Star weekend back in February.

The sexual assault allegedly took place at the Holiday Inn located at 600 Dixon Rd. in the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 13.

It was reported to police that the male accused was operating a taxi and picked up the victim, a 26-year-old woman, as a fare earlier in the evening.

The man drove the woman around the downtown area of Toronto, while he continued to pick up other fares, and the pair continued to socialize and consume alcohol throughout the evening.

At around 1 a.m., the man and woman attended the Holiday Inn in Etobicoke, where the man allegedly sexually assaulted the woman.

The man, who identi-

fied himself as ‘Ali’, is described as 28 years old and 5’10” tall.

He was wearing light-blue jeans, a Pittsburgh baseball hat, and a black zip-up jacket with a maroon hoodie underneath.

A sexual assault is any form of unwanted sexual contact that can include, but is not limited to, kissing, grabbing, oral sex and penetration.

Provincial minister of education Liz Sandals announces $12 million in funding for a new 500-pupil school and 49-space child care centre in south Etobicoke. The project will bring St. Leo and St. Louis Catholic Schools together under one roof.

Funding comes through for new Catholic school in south Etobicoke CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A soon-to-be-constructed $12-million Catholic elementary school and licensed childcare centre has been given the Ministry of Education’s stamp of approval in south Etobicoke.

Funding for the project – which will consolidate St. Leo and St. Louis Catholic schools in one building – was announced by Minister of Education Liz Sandals during a surprise visit to St. Leo’s last week.

“Improving learning environments for our students is one the best infrastructure investments we can make,” Sandals said in a statement.

“Our government is proud to invest in capital projects that are bringing students and communities together, reducing the cost of under-used space, and reinvesting savings back into the classroom.”

Once built, the facility will provide “a modern learning environment, enhanced programming and better support for student achievement and well-being” for 500 students from junior kindergarten to Grade 8. It will also feature three custom-built rooms resulting in 49 licensed childcare spaces for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Peter Milczyn said he was “delighted” the St. Leo and St. Louis school communities will now be receiving the modern facility for which they have long been advocating.

“I have closely worked with and will continue working with local parents, schools and school boards to ensure that the facilities our students need are provided,” he said.

The school will be built on the St. Leo site at 165 Stanley Ave., just off Royal York Road.

While a timeline for construction of the consolidated building has not been set, Etobicoke Trustee Ann Andrachuk said she’s been told Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) staff are working on a report to bring to the board.

“Now that the funding has been secured and dollars announced, we have to get approval from the board to secure an architect. Once that’s approved, things will start rolling,” Andrachuk said in an interview Wednesday, April 27.

“I told a young fellow in kindergarten yesterday that, fingers crossed, I’m hoping that he’ll be in the new school by the time he’s in Grade 4.”

During construction of the new school on the St. Leo site, Andrachuk said students from that school will most likely

be bused elsewhere, while St. Louis students will stay put until the new school opens.

“If we’ve got all our ducks lined up and everything plays out properly, then we’ll be able to build the school very efficiently and we may not have to displace the students for very long,” she said. “If we do it for just one school year, that would be a bonus.”

Once the school is built and all the kids from St. Leo and St. Louis are under their new roof, plans for the St. Louis school building, at 11 Morgan Ave., near Royal York Road and The Queensway, will be made.

Andrachuk said she believes the board will maintain the building and either use it for specialized programming or lease it.

Andrachuk assured parents of all children impacted by the merging of St. Leo and St. Louis under one roof that the consolidation process, and any boundary changes it may bring with it, will be carried out “very thoughtfully”.

“So far, I’ve been very impressed with and very happy to have the support of the parent community and school council at St. Leo’s, because they were a driving force and very supportive though this whole process,” she said. “Good things happen when parents get involved.”

Two budding young business minds from Etobicoke high schools will be pitching their entrepreneurial ideas Dragon Den-style at the upcoming Young Entrepreneurs, Make Your Pitch competition.

Eric Sheppard, 17, from Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA) and Samantha Ling, 16, from Martingrove Collegiate Institute, are two of just 20 teen entrepreneurs selected to participate in the three-day event at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from May 8 to 10.

To qualify for the competition, which is taking place during the Discovery Ontario Centre of Excellence’s innovation-to-commercialization conference, Sheppard and Ling each had to submit a twominute video pitch for their businesses.

Sheppard’s pitch – which can be viewed at bit.ly/1WSQBZc – is for a study calendar app called Study Cop. “It’s an app that uses social media to encourage kids to study harder and focus more at school,” Sheppard explained in an interview with The Guardian.

“I know a lot of kids who have trouble buckling down with their school work at times, so I figured this was something a lot of students could connect with and could benefit from.”

Billed as a study app “with a twist”, the proposed cell phone app would allow student users to schedule study sessions for upcoming tests and exams, with a handy alert system to remind them to hit

the books.

But should the user fail to check in with the app that they are, in fact, studying when they’re supposed to be, the app will use its connections to the user’s social media connections to publicly shame them for not studying.

“It’s fun. It’s useful. And most of all, it keeps kids on track with their studying,” Sheppard says in his pitch video. “Study cop: because studying beats getting embarrassed in front of all of your friends.”

Meanwhile, Ling’s video pitch – which can be viewed at bit.ly/1XWa49C – is for SOCIETEES: Clothing That Gives Back.

“SOCIETEES is basically a clothing company that inspires people to make a difference,” explained Ling, noting that each SOCIETEES T-shirt design will be made by “passionate youth graphic designers” to correspond to one of the 15 sustainable development goals outlined by the United Nations, having to do with the environment, human rights, gender equality, etc.

“Each of the T-shirt designs will also have a charity attached to it, and 20 to 25 per cent of the profits from each purchase will then be sent to those charities.”

During this weekend’s Young Entrepreneurs, Make Your Pitch competition – which is presented by Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) and the Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure – Ling and Sheppard will vie for up to $3,000 in start-up funds and entrepreneurial mentorship

opportunities through the Ontario Summer Company program and other awards.

Judges for the live threeminute pitches will include: Nicole Verkindt (OMX founder and Dragon on CBC’s “Next Gen” Dragons’ Den); Heather Payne (HackerYou CEO and Ladies Learning Code founder), Sohaib Zahid (Vanhawks Inc. CEO and co-founder), Karl Martin (Nymi founder and CTO) and Narbe Alexandrian (OMERS Ventures associate).

“I’m definitely looking forward to gaining the advice from the experts, and also just being able to pitch my idea in front of hundreds of people, hundreds of professionals and getting feedback on how to run a business,” said Ling, who aspires to work at the UN one day. “I’m also excited to gain a network of fellow youth entrepreneurs who are really motivated and driven – and to possibly work with some of them in the future.”

Brad Duguid congratulated Ling, Sheppard and the 18 other finalists in the annual Ontario-wide high-school entrepreneurship contest “as future leaders and job creators who will grow our economy in the 21st century.”

BOARD MEMBER Exciting opportunities exist to join the Board of Directors of the Central West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) A mosaic of geographic and cultural diversity and home to over 922,000 local residents, the Central West LHIN plans, integrates, funds and monitors the local health care system for the regions of Brampton, Caledon, Dufferin, Malton, north Etobicoke and west Woodbridge. Together with local Health Service Providers and community partners (hospitals, the Central West Community Care Access Centre, community-based support services, long-term care facilities, mental health and addictions agencies, physicians, family health teams, community health centres, and broader public health and social services sectors), the Central West LHIN is working to put people and patients first by improving their health care experience and their health outcomes.

Members of the Central West LHIN Board of Directors are responsible for directing its affairs and providing oversight in accordance with applicable legislation, approved strategic and business plans, accountability agreements with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and the directions and policies as established by the MOHLTC. We will have three Board vacancies in 2016; one occurring in June, 2016, and the other two in October.

We will be focusing our search on candidates who possess the following attributes: • Understand governance and, ideally, have governance experience, • Understand the mandate of Ontario’s LHINs, • Demonstrate community leadership, • Have an interest in or understanding of the health care system, • Have experience in engaging with the public, • Live or work within the Central West Regions and in particular, the City of Brampton and/or Town of Caledon.

Specifically, we are looking for candidates with experience and/or background in the areas of:

• Health Care • Finance/Accounting • Human Resources • Law • Communications Additionally, we are seeking individuals who represent the Francophone community and individuals who represent the Aboriginal community.

Most Central West LHIN Board and Committee meetings are held in Brampton in the evenings but they do, from time to time, move around to other communities within our LHIN. Serving on a LHIN Board is a part-time position, but it does require a significant time commitment, often involving meetings and/or teleconferences during and outside of normal business hours. Candidates should consider their ability to make such a commitment as part of their decision to express their interest in serving on the LHIN Board.

Directors are paid a per diem to attend Board and Committee meetings and public engagement meetings which also includes preparation time. In addition, appointees are eligible for expenses consistent with applicable government policies.

Refugee influx places strain on food banks MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Newly arrived families from Syria may be straining Toronto food banks, many of which just saw the biggest month-to-month rise in demand since the 2008 recession.

A Scarborough food bank in Dorset Park is facing a “dire situation,” including shortages of halal food, because the area’s newest residents are forced to rely on it, Lee Soda, executive director of Agincourt Community Services Association (ACSA), said this week.

Toronto’s Daily Bread, the city’s largest food bank supplier, said from February to March there was a 20 per cent city-wide increase in client visits.

“We’re not used to seeing such huge increases month-to-month,” Sarah Anderson Austin, a spokesperson, said Tuesday.

Austin said she can’t say the cause was Syrian refugees arriving in Toronto, but Daily Bread has heard from agencies, in “mostly Scarborough, though also in Etobicoke too,” that this contributed, as refugees staying in local hotels have settled in nearby apartments, “causing an increased number of client visits.”

The last time Daily Bread saw anything like March’s 11,000 new client families was in 2007, before the recession hit, when there was a 10 to 12 per cent increase in a month.

Staff at ACSA’s Dorset Park community hub on Kennedy Road, which includes a newcomer centre working with some 200 Syrian families, has no doubts the influx is behind the increased demand.

The larger size of the refugee families – five members are not uncommon, and many have more – also mean two monthly visits to a food bank isn’t enough, Soda said.

Some refugees are in “survival jobs” – general labour, kitchen helper – which cannot support a family, and even those jobs are tough to get with no English, said Jamillah Mananghaya, coordinator of the newcomer centre, which has hired two recently arrived Syrians and uses Syrian and Lebanese volunteers as helpers.

About 25 per cent of client families at Dorset Park, lately up from 350 to 450, need halal food, said Christine Marwell, food bank coordinator.

The food bank is willing to give people food no matter where they’ve settled, but lately clients are offered fewer choices, she said.

Refugees don’t seem to be directly affecting supplies for a food bank at the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities, which serves an area further to the east, and is “not seeing a lot of Syrian folks,” said Christine Hewitt, its interim manager.

But reduced deliveries from Daily Bread, the supplier, have helped bring on the “drought” – a low point in supplies usually seen in mid-summer – shockingly early, she said.

Here, food, especially protein, is being rationed for families.

Major Kester Trim, manager of the Salvation Army food bank in Rexdale, said he’s seen a steady increase in demand, but doesn’t know exactly what’s causing it.

“I find it’s new Canadians, and it’s across the board,” Trim said on Tuesday, adding, “We always can use help.”

The Caregiver Show takes place Friday at Ontario Science Centre The Caregiver Show will happen tomorrow at the Ontario Science Centre in North York.

The annual show offers information, assistance and relief for those looking after a loved one who is suffering from dementia or other conditions.

More than 50 exhibitors are scheduled to take part in the show, which will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Statistics from the Alzheimer Society of Canada show that in 2011, 747,000 Canadians were living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias – that’s 14.9 per cent of Canadians 65 and older. Between two per cent and 10 per cent of all cases of dementia start before the age of 65. The risk for dementia doubles every five years after age 65.

The show helps raise awareness of how many family members are involved in caring for loved ones in

need.

More families are choosing condo over house, study finds HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Trading in the downtown lifestyle for a spacious suburban house is no longer a swap young families want to make. It’s also a lifestyle sacrifice many aren’t willing to make either.

It’s a rising trend that’s forcing the City of Toronto’s planning department to conduct a study to look at how it can better accommodate those who have forsaken the plush green lawns of a house in the ‘burbs for a condo in the sky.

Take Andy and Amy Geer for example. Both are young professionals working in the city, married for two years with a baby on the way.

They bought their two-bedroom, two bathroom condo in Fort York after a painful three months of looking for houses in Mimico, the Junction and East York.

“I distinctly remember one Sunday morning, after looking at listings, thinking ‘I don’t want to do a house,’” Amy recalled.

“After looking at houses and (realizing) what we’d be getting ourselves into, we just realized overnight it’s not what we wanted.”

So they chose the high rise life

and they couldn’t be happier.

“We could have borrowed money from the bank, but we wouldn’t be able to do anything else. There’d be no going out for dinner. We wouldn’t be able to do anything other than pay our mortgage,” Andy explained.

“It was just a lifestyle we wanted to be able to maintain… If we bought a house we wouldn’t be able to afford

a baby; a condo would allow us to have the lifestyle and a baby.”

This shift in mindset is all too common and has forced the City of Toronto to take note, which spawned: Growing Up: Planning for Children in New Vertical Communities, a study which is an extension of the Condominium Consultations held in 2013-14 and the Chief Planners

Roundtable in 2014.

This study is looking at how new “multi-unit housing in high-density communities can better accommodate the needs of households with children and youth.” Surveys were available online, with plans to roll out community consultations in the summer.

The study also aims to provide some direction for new development in the city to consider three areas when building a new condominium – the unit itself, the building and the neighbourhood, while addressing the issues of unit size, layout, building amenities, surrounding amenities and the design of the nearby public realm.

“We’re basically doing this study to have this concerted focused effort to look at how we plan for better family-friendly communities and recognizing that a lot of them are vertical,” said Anne-Marie Nasr, the manager of strategic initiatives with city planning.

The city has begun interviewing families in high density areas like Yonge and Eglinton, Liberty Village, City Place and Scarborough, but they’re also conducting workshops with developers, architects and

designers to gather input on design ideas and share experiences about what works and what doesn’t when developing a condominium.

Part of that discussion is the construction of more two- and threebedroom units. According to the Housing Occupancy Trends report released in 2015, only 3.8 per cent of units in high rise buildings built between 1996 and 2011 had three or more bedrooms.

There’s been an increase in families with children in high rises in Toronto. In 2011 there were 10,145 more families with children living in high-rise apartments than 15 years earlier, a 15 per cent increase.

The main reasons for the boom align with why the Geers chose to stay in the city, which has less to do with housing costs, although the housing market is highly competitive and expensive, and more to do with quicker commute times, close proximity to amenities, workplaces, services and transit.

“I think it’s a convenience thing that urban living is just becoming more desirable to this generation of families as they grow up,” said Trinity-Spadina councillor Mike Layton (Ward 19).

In 1895, James Farr applied to buy an unused road allowance on the south side of his property. Initially council agreed, until a petition from local residents asked that, in exchange, Farr be required to

Farr agreed to give one hectare of his land. In 1896, the first public park in Etobicoke opened between Islington Avenue and Albion Road.

Since then the park has been used for community events, including agricultural fairs, sporting competitions,

a skating rink, community picnics, Victory Gardens, wedding receptions, and an annual Village Green Festival.

In 1952, the Thistletown Volunteer Fire Department gave a public demonstration in the park.

Pr i n c e Ha r r y v i s i t e d Toronto Monday to launch the IG2017 countdown, with help from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Team Canada athletes and many others.

The launch came in two parts, starting with a morning conference at the Royal York in front of a packed ballroom of armed forces members and veterans, and other special guests.

“This city will become the focal point for hundreds of men and women who use the pull of Invictus glory to motivate their recovery from physical and mental injuries,” Prince Harry told the crowd.

“Toronto will take on the responsibility for a competition that has the power to inspire millions of people around the world, and to remind us all of the amazing

contribution that our servicemen, women and veterans make.”

The international sporting event for ill and injured armed forces members and veterans was founded by Prince Harry in London, England in 2014. He spoke about his inspiration for the event at the conference, sharing how his experiences with the British Army and watching the American Warrior Games compelled him to create an international platform for wounded warriors to come together and compete. This year’s Invictus Games are in Orlando, Florida from May 8 to 12.

Premier Kathleen Wynne announced Ontario will contribute $10 million over two years to Toronto’s Invictus Games.

“It’s important to recognize and support those who have given so much,” said Wynne. “The Invictus Games are another opportunity to honour these sacrifices and to provide tangible help to

“These individuals are, as the name Invictus suggests, unconquerable. This

event shines a spotlight on their unwavering strength of character,” Trudeau said.

“So much of the heroism, the bravery, the valour, the fight that our servicemen and women do is not seen, and not nearly celebrated enough.”

Michael Burns, CEO of IG2017, noted the event comes at a special time for Canada and its military.

“To be able to host the Invictus Games in 2017 during our country’s 150th anniversary, and the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, is literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Burns.

“The Invictus Games have the potential to give our military families a new sense of mission and a renewed sense of purpose. These Games will help to show them that life, while it has changed for them, still has purpose and meaning, and that there is still so much more to give and to receive.”

At the second event, hundreds of elementary school

students filled the stands, clad in black and gold Invictus Games shirts, to cheer on Canada’s national sledge hockey team. The IG2017 mascot, Vimy, a K-9 character inspired by service and detection dogs, helped pump up the crowd. Pop singer Tyler Shaw performed the Canadian anthem and his single Wicked for the students, who also heard from Prince Harry, Trudeau, Mayor John Tory and others, including Marc Kielburger. Free the Children is partnering with IG2017 to bring the spirit of the Games to Canadian youth at thousands of schools, Kielburger announced, adding it will also coordinate We Day 2017 with the Games.

It is an honour to support role models like the Invictus athletes, said Tory.

“We’re so proud to host these Games,” he said. “We’re lucky to be able to honour these heroes.”

Legion defends use of $500K of Poppy Fund to support Invictus Games TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The Royal Canadian Legion is donating $500,000 from its annual Poppy Fund as a signature sponsor of the Toronto 2017 Invictus Games.

But some veterans are sharply critical of the sizable donation, saying the money raised from the legion’s annual poppy fund is intended to assist veterans “in financial need,” as the legion describes the fund grants on its website.

The Invictus Games invite service men and women from around the world who left their service wounded, injured or sick to compete in adapted athletics events.

Invictus means unconquered.

The games “inspire their recovery, support rehabilitation, and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country,” the Invictus Games Foundation website indicates.

This year’s Invictus Games will be held at Walt Disney World, Fla. this month.

London in 2014 after he attended the Warrior Games, a similar style event held in the U.S. Brad White, dominion secretary of The Royal Canadian Legion, called spending $500,000 to become a signature sponsor of the games a “natural fit” for the organization. Senior members on the legion’s executive

council voted unanimously in favour of the support, he said.

“Helping soldiers, sailors and air people transition in their lives is what we’re all about,” White said from Ottawa in an interview. “The games help transition one’s life from the military, especially for those who are ill or injured, to their ‘new

normal’. It can be a real difficult transition.”

Some critics charged the Invictus Games should not be financed through donations collected through the sale of poppies.

Poppy Fund grants “provide financial assistance to serving and former Canadian Armed Forces and their families who are in need,” the legion states on its website.

“Grants are available for food, heating costs, clothing, prescription medication, medical appliances and equipment, essential home repairs and emergency shelter or assistance.”

Last year, the legion donated $17 million in Poppy Fund grants to veterans, White reported.

Sponsoring the Invictus Games will not take Poppy Funds from any other recipients, White said.

“No veteran will go without,” White said.

“If a veteran is in need, the money will be there to support him or her and their family. If any veteran needs assistance with a disability issue (to obtain government compensation), we go and make a representation to the government. This is what we do.”

White argued the legion’s sup-

port of the games is not a use of the Poppy Fund contrary to any other.

He cited several Poppy Fund grants in recent years to assist veterans and families. Four years ago, the legion committed $500,000 to create a national program to support veterans with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) transition to civilian life. The legion committed the same amount to initiate a homeless veterans program, White said.

The legion contributed $1 million from the Poppy Fund to Royal Ottawa Hospital, whose chief psychiatrist is chairing brain research into PTSD among the military.

Wayne Powell, immediate past president of Branch 258 Highland Creek in Scarborough, said he supports Dominion Command’s support of the games.

“I think it’s a great thing,” said Powell, also his legion’s Poppy Fund chairman.

“I say that because it speaks volumes about what the Poppy Fund does to support veterans. If the money is there, the whole purpose is to support veterans and their families. It’s a one-time donation to assist veterans. I don’t have an issue with that.”

ESA grad Matthew Tissi stars in new Family Channel show Series features Jason Priestley, Molly Ringwald CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Matthew Tissi wasn’t even born when the Brat Pack had teens flocking to theatres in the ’80s and Beverly Hills 90210 had them glued to their TVs in the early ’90s, but he’s making up for lost time now by acting alongside two of that generation’s biggest stars.

The 20-year-old Rexdale native is set to star in The Family Channel’s Raising Expectations with former teen icons Molly Ringwald – who shot to fame for her roles in a trio of John Hughes coming-of-age films – and Jason Priestley – who attained teen dream status playing Brandon Walsh on Beverly Hills 90210.

“If anyone knows what it’s like to be a young actor, it’s them, so it was a lot of fun working with them,” the Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA) grad said.

“They’re so nice and so personable – and on top of that, they’re great actors... Plus, watching them balance their home and work lives was really great. I marvel at how they’re filming a scene one minute

and then the next they’re off in some corner FaceTiming their children and asking about their homework.

I mean, they’re just really great role models.”

On Raising Expectations, which premieres Sunday, Tissi plays Bentley Wayney, one of Ringwald and Priestley’s characters’ overachieving children.

“Bentley is a whole lot of fun, because he’s sort of like 16 going on 65 – he’s a classical cellist, he’s a poet, and I feel like he’s probably the most sophisticated 16 year old ever,” Tissi said of his character.

“He has no interest in being a normal 16-year-old because he sees himself as being above the average adolescent. So he’s sort of a little pretentious and snobby, but I think that’s just part of his charm – and it was a really fun energy to play.”

While the role of Bentley marks Tissi’s first as a TV series regular, the young actor already has several credits to his fledgling career – including a turn on stage as Kurt von Trapp in Mirvish Productions’ The Sound of Music, and previous TV roles on Schitts Creek, Call Me Fitz and Covert

“I have to credit my parents with a lot of it, because they noticed some-

thing in me at a very young age,” said Tissi, recalling that, at age four, he outlasted his parents during a

late-night viewing of Singing in the Rain and was able to recite the entire movie to them when they woke up.

“After that, they put me in singing lessons and acting lessons, so I’m pretty grateful for that.”

From there, Tissi enrolled in ESA, where he majored in music theatre.

“It was a really positive experience. What’s great about it is you’re with a lot of like-minded kids, so it really isn’t your typical high school,” he said of the arts school.

While Tissi deferred his first semester at the University of Toronto this school year in order to film Raising Expectations in Mississauga last July to November, he’s now back to working toward his bachelor of music degree.

His education, he said, is his top priority for now – although he’s looking forward to seeing people’s reactions to Raising Expectations.

He’s anxious to see what acting opportunities await him next.

“I love doing theatre, I love doing film, and I love doing television – I just want to be in this business.

Whether they’re laughing or crying, making people feel something is what I love to do.”

MP Kirsty Duncan, residents awarded for unselfish acts of bravery CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Kirsty Duncan was one of 13 people recognized by the Toronto Police Services for “unselfish acts of bravery” here in Etobicoke.

The Etobicoke North MP and Minister of Science was bestowed with a Community Member Award by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and Mayor John Tory during a special ceremony at police headquarters April 24, during which a total of 42 citizens from across the city were recognized.

“Today, we are honouring those who have followed that greatest of instincts, which is the human one that says no matter how the circumstances might seem in terms of danger to yourself or some kind of threat to yourself, you step up and help a fellow human being,” Tory said in a statement.

Duncan was honoured alongside two of her young campaign aides –

Benjamin Abis and Delaney Ratnakulsingam – for their “willingness to assist a fellow citizen” back on Aug. 20, 2015.

The trio was out canvassing homes in north Etobicoke before the October f e d e ra l e l e c t i o n w h e n Ratnakulsingam alerted them to an elderly women’s screams for help to assist her husband.

“Delaney yelled to us, ‘Help, help!’, and myself and Benjamin went flying across the lawn and ran into this house where there was an elderly man lying on the couch. His colour was terrible,” Duncan recalled.

While Duncan and Abis moved the man to the floor and Abis began CPR and chest compressions on the man, Ratnakulasingam called 911.

Within minutes, paramedics and Toronto Fire arrived and took over, restoring the man’s heartbeat.

he had a good chance. But we found out the next day that he didn’t make it,” Duncan lamented.

Police said, it was a “direct result” of Duncan, Abis and Ratnakulasingam’s actions that paramedics were able to

stabilize the man and transport him to hospital where we could receive the best treatment possible.

Other local recipients of the Toronto Police Community Member Awards included: n Kristy Ann Blair, Kevin

Fullarton, Elizabeth Knox, Andrew Lagree, and Karl Lippe in recognition of their “keen observations and immediate actions to save a life”.

On Oct. 15, 2015, all five assisted a man who sustained head, neck, shoulder and hand injuries after being struck by a mini bus. n Fernando Clabassi and Carlos Goncalves in recognition of their “compassion and concern for the safety of a person in crisis”.

On Nov. 16, 2015, the pair assisted a suicidal man who climbed over the guard rail of a bridge with a 70-foot drop to a river below. They managed to pull the man back onto the sidewalk and hold him until police arrived. n Chris Flavius in recognition of his “invaluable assistance to a victim and police.”

In June 2012, Flavius was in the basement of his apartment building when he was approached by a female victim whose ex-boyfriend

was approaching her with a handgun. Flavius stood between the two and was able to calm the man down, until he eventually left without further incident. The man was later arrested. n Ashley Rutter in recognition of her “commendable actions”.

On Oct. 24, 2015, Rutter came to the assistance of a man who was stabbed multiple times in the chest while standing in a bus shelter. n Veronica Giannantonio in recognition of her “keen observations and courageous actions”.

On Fe b. 1 4 , 2 0 1 6 , Giannantonio was driving home when she saw a vehicle embedded in a tree on the front lawn of a house. As she assessed the situation, the engine of the vehicle caught fire. She couldn’t open the doors to the car that were locked. As the fire grew, she managed to get the male to unlock the door, then pulled him out and moved him away from the burning vehicle.
