Simply put – family caregivers need support. That’s the reason for the upcoming The Caregiver Show, a free event May 14 at the Direct Energy Centre. Produced by Metroland Media Toronto and conceived in partnership with Downsizing Divas, the show will provide a relaxing day for caregivers, giving them access to caregiving resources, providing the opportunity to meet other caregivers in similar circumstances, and to receive a little pampering. Some eight million Canadians are family caregivers. A caregiver is anyone who provides care to a loved one or friend with acute, chronic problem or aging issues. A caregiver can be a wife, husband, sister, brother, daughter, son, uncle, aunt, mother, father, grandchild or caring neighbour. “We do hope you take advantage and attend this show,” said Marg Middleton, general manager of Metroland Media Toronto. “We want to provide >>>discover, page 10

Students and families celebrate their new Canadian citizenship status ‘We are free to go wherever and do what we can for our children’ NOEL GRZETIC etg@insidetoronto.com Dressed to the nines and full of proud anticipation, a group of new citizens joined the ranks of Canadians at a recent Etobicoke ceremony. “This ceremony marks an important milestone in your life – you become a Canadian citizen,” said Citizenship Judge Rafiq Rokerya as he addressed the group of 40 candidates at North Kipling Junior Middle School. “This is a right you’ve worked hard to earn.” Adults, children and teenagers were among those who took the final step in making their commitment to Canada. Family and friends snapped pictures as the group recited the Oath of Citizenship, promising their allegiance to Queen Elizabeth and to fulfilling their duties as citizens. Du r i n g h i s re m a r k s, Rokerya shared his own experiences as a young immigrant

who worked and studied his way into a general accounting profession. He emphasized education and perseverance as the keys to success for any Canadian. Education was the deciding factor that influenced Chaminda Rambukurelle and wife Thilochani Bandaranayake to choose

Canada four years ago when they left Sri Lanka. “We initially thought of other countries, but I had read a couple of articles (about Canada) and thought it would be good for my son, for his education, and for his future,” explained Rambukurelle, with his five-year-old son nodding shyly beside him.

Etobicoke residents Ragiv and Nisha Parikh expressed a similar mindset. The couple already had some family in Canada, so they knew it was a good choice for their family when they moved from India seven years ago. “Canada is a free country,” explained Ragiv. “We are free to go wherever and do what

we can for our children.” They placed high priority on moving somewhere that could provide the best educational opportunities for their two children, who both seemed to already be taking advantage. “I have a lot of plans!” said their 12-year-old daughter Krisha. “First a doctor, then scientist, a fashion designer and a teacher.” Prior to the ceremony, Grade 5 students from the school had a chance to meet with Rokerya for a questionand-answer period. There was much discussion about what it means to be a good citizen, with answers such as “respect each other’s culture,” and “when you’re on the road you have to obey the signs,” offered by the young ones. In attendance for the event were North Etobicoke Councillor Vincent Crisanti, school board Trustee John Hastings and Toronto Humber Rotary Club president Hans Gupta. Gupta said the group has been hosting the local citizenship ceremony for 12 years.

Giving caregivers needed support

t takes a good heart to dedicate oneself to caregiving – be it for an aging parent, a friend or family member with acute or chronic health problems. It takes patience, self-sacrifice and a lot of love. But it also requires support and respite for the caregiver themselves, to be able to learn from experts, to lean on others in similar circumstances and to have a chance to take time to relax and refresh. That’s what’s on offer at The Caregiver Show, coming up May 14 at the Direct Energy Centre. It’s a free event produced by Metroland Media Toronto and conceived in partnership with Downsizing Divas. It’s tailored to people who care for others – and with as many as eight million family caregivers in Canada, we’re sure there are plenty of you among our readership who could use the support. Norm Kelly’s handling of de-facto mayor’s job deserves much praise H

e won’t return your phone call personally. He doesn’t worry about his office budget. And he shows up early. Sometimes, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly shows up very early. On Monday, he and Toronto CentreRosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam hosted a 9 a.m. news conference, to do something else that Mayor Rob Ford would never do: invite 200 LGBT couples to get married, for free, at Toronto’s Casa Loma. Now that Ford has left city hall to look after his personal problems, Kelly is the de-facto mayor. The leave of absence funnels to Kelly the few powers left to Ford after council voted to isolate him in November. Kelly represents Toronto at official functions and acts as the head of the government

david nickle the city

in emergencies and other situations. And he continues in his role of attempting to elevate the discussion at city hall, and restore dignity to the institution – a role in which Kelly has excelled. I take the time to point this out, because the longtime Scarborough councillor really deserves the shout-out. These past 12 months have seen the city dragged through the mud – from the moment that crack video started making the rounds, or maybe a short while before, when gossip about Ford’s substance troubles found their way from backrooms to front pages. Kelly stepped into the

role of deputy mayor in the midst of it, taking over from Doug Holyday after he made his way to Queen’s Park. Kelly did so gamely – knowing there was trouble with the mayor, and hoping to provide quiet counsel to the mayor and his brother as the office unravelled. It was a thankless job, but Kelly had the good grace to appear grateful for it. And when council put him in the sort-of-top-job, he managed to retain some grace even as he was clearly delighted to oblige. He’s spent the past five months taking council’s pulse, nudging things along on issues he cares about, but otherwise taking a quesera-sera approach to matters of municipal policy. You would never run an election campaign promising to be a mayor like Kelly. But it is actually a good lesson for future mayors,

as they think about how to manage this city. Kelly’s geniality has led to a pretty productive council. It passed a decent budget, made a tough call on the future of the Billy Bishop Airport and generally conducted its business as well as one might hope. The next mayor might find him/herself needing some of Kelly’s low-key mojo. Because given the city’s financial constraints, it will be difficult to make a mark with more than one or two big, city-building projects and still manage the books. The virtues of modesty, inclusiveness and compromise might be the main of what our future leaders require. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Pia Lauretti

President, Etobicoke Humane Society By Tamara Shephard

THE ETOBICOKE HUMANE SOCIETY is gearing up for its Leashes-by-the-Lake Dog Walkathon walk at Amos Waites Park May 25. Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) President Pia Lauretti spoke with The Guardian about the event, and how the registered charity operates as a volunteer-run, “no-kill” shelter that receives no government funding. It is financed solely by adoption and surrender fees and much-needed donations.

1

What is Etobicoke Humane Society’s Leashes-by-the-Lake Dog Walkathon? Do people need to have a dog to participate?

Even if you don’t have a dog, come out. There’s a 2.5-kilometre walk for senior or younger dogs, as well as a 5K route. We’ll have water bowls out. There is a dog basket, a

2

cat basket, even a lifestyle basket of picnic items to be won. There will be a barbecue, a RCMP officer on a horse, face painting, local stores on Lake Shore support us. People

pay a minimum registration fee. But we ask if you walk, to ask your friends and family to sponsor you.

How does EHS operate without any government funding?

We receive surrender fees. We’re trying to build up our monthly donors. Leashes-onthe-Lake and the Bowlathon are really our bread-and-butter fundraisers. We pay $5,000 a month to rent our building. We pay government taxes. Our water, electricity, heat-

ing bills cost another $800 a month. When you give us $10 or $1,000, that money goes directly to the shelter and the animals. No one gets a paycheque. We’re very proud of that. I pay the vet bills. This month, it’s about $4,000. Next month, it will be around

$6,000 because we took in some puppies that have some (medical) issues. We get food donations. But right now, six of our cats and two of our dogs are on special veterinary food. We buy that.

3. Where do EHS animals in the shelter come from?

We don’t take feral (born in the wild) cats or dogs. Most of our animals are from people picking up animals that have been dumped or people surrender their animal to us because they can’t afford the animal anymore. Other people adopt a cat or kitten for free or at low cost from Kijiji, but don’t know their building or condo’s pet restrictions. Then they can’t keep the pet. Cats tend

to need dental work around age eight. People will say, ‘I’m allergic to my cat’ and the cat is eight years old. Really they are surrendering it because the cat needs dental work or is diabetic. People realize it’s not just $100 a year for a vet checkup anymore. They have to pay A, B, C. They get rid of their pet and get a kitten. Others say, ‘I love my animal, but I can’t afford

its $3,000 surgery.’ We take in that animal. Our vets give us a 20 per cent discount. A lot of times, animals are just dumped at our door. Once there was a box wrapped in duct tape with holes in it. There was an eight-week-old Jack Russell puppy inside. People tie their dog’s leash to our tree or front door knob. People leave their cats in their carriers at our front door.

4

Are there any misconceptions about Etobicoke Humane Society you’d like to address?

We are not affiliated at all with Toronto Humane Society. We’re also not associated with Toronto Animal Services. Because I am the president and I worked my way up from cleaning cat cages 14 years ago, I can say there is not one paycheque at Etobicoke Humane. Toronto Humane pays its

5

space, because of an animal’s age. We don’t euthanize black cats or black dogs (which tend to be less popular to adopt).

Another misconception is that EHS only works in Etobicoke and saves animals in Etobicoke, right?

Yes. We don’t just serve Etobicoke. We also go outside Etobicoke (to save animals). Recently, we went to a (First Nations) reserve, a six-hour drive up north and rescued a whole bunch of puppies

6

staff. We don’t. We haven’t in 30 years. We are a 100 per cent charity. One hundred per cent of that $10 or $1,000 you give us goes right back to the shelter and the animals. We do not euthanize. Only if a vet recommends it because an animal is in distress and nothing will help. We don’t euthanize for

when we learned puppies were being killed. There’s a woman...at Hamilton Animal Services, which has no adoption policy. If an animal is not picked up within five days, it is euthanized. God bless her. She’ll call us and say, ‘They

are going to euthanize 65 to 100 cats today.’ She calls lots of shelters. We go there the same day. Our last trip, we got 23 cats. Two of them were pregnant.

How can people help EHS?

We welcome donations. People often donate old towels. But we can’t pay our vets with towels. We’re so appreciative of monetary donations. People are welcome to come in to the shelter and see the animals. Once they’re there, they can donate by cash, credit card

or debit. They can donate on our website at www.etobicokehumanesociety.com. Donations of $20 or more get a tax receipt. They can call us at 416-249-6100 and donate by credit card. We always need reliable volunteers. We’re a 365-day, seven-day-a-week organiza-

tion. We run three shifts a day, three or four volunteers per shift. We have about 150 volunteers who are amazing and loyal. They work at Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, on their birthdays. I tell people, ‘You can’t call me last-minute that you can’t work. We’re talking about lives here.’

HEART ADVICE FOR HARD TIMES: Eulogies honour life and comfort the living A eulogy is often the last publicly spoken words about someone who has died. Most people when asked to deliver a eulogy feel blessed and burden. Below are some basic principles to help you draft a talk that honours the dead while comforting the living. Start by compiling W5 information. The W5 of someone’s life –who, what, when, where and why – is the easiest way to start your storytelling. Where did the person grow up? What did they like to do? Whom did they love? Gathering the facts ensures a concise and relevant speech structure that touches on all major aspects of the person’s life. Introduce yourself and how you fit in. Easing into your eulogy with simple information – who you are and why you’re up there – will build your confidence and help settle your nerves. Acknowledge the deceased person’s family, honour their loss and express your own sadness. Describe who the person was but avoid reciting a long list of qualities and characteristics. Show, don’t tell. Share

stories, achievements and highlights from a life well lived. Include everyone not just the inner circle. Remember that some attendees will be learning new information about the deceased person’s life, so avoid inside jokes, elusive nicknames and private memories that could reflect poorly on the deceased and/ or their family. Conclude the eulogy with how you, and all people in attendance, have been enriched by knowing and loving the person being celebrated and mourned. Share how you plan on remembering the deceased from now on. Balance humour with respect. The most powerful (and enjoyable) eulogies include family stories that are heartwarming and offer insight into the deceased person’s good nature. Funny stories help shed warm light during cold dark times. Laughter is the best medicine but not for all people all the time. Knowing your audience means respecting your audience. Aim for humour that is mild, respectful and used sparingly. If you’re trying to be

funny or over-the-top, stop. Be discreet and graceful. Embrace the challenge. Writing and presenting a eulogy might be one of the most difficult things you’ll do in your life. You’re sad and emotional, and so is your audience. If you cry, break down or pause, that’s okay. Take your time. The family has asked you to honour their loved one’s life and comfort those left behind. Everyone listening realizes that your task is mighty, meaningful and absolutely perfect. You’ve all gathered to honour a life and offer comfort to one another. Your eulogy puts those noble feelings and intentions into words. Speak up and shine your light. Brad Jones has been a funeral director in Etobicoke for over 20 years. He still remembers the honour of delivering his mother’s eulogy to family and friends. Brad helps families celebrate lives well lived at Ridley Funeral Home in Mimico (3080 Lake Shore Blvd., across from Humber College). He can be reached at 416.259.3705 or BradJones@ RidleyFuneralHome.com

provincial election

Milczyn set to represent Liberals in south Etobicoke election race With the blessing of the premier, Peter Milczyn is set to once again cinch the Liberal party nomination on his home turf of Etobicoke-Lakeshore – a riding currently held by the PCs by Milczyn’s former fellow Etobicoke councillor Doug Holyday. Should Milczyn win the provincial nomination in Etobicoke-Lakeshore at Thursday night’s nomination meeting as expected, the stage will be set for a rematch of last August’s byelection, which saw the Mayor Rob Fordbacked Holyday win the seat by a margin of less than five per cent (or 1,500 votes). In an interview with The Guardian during a Tuesday afternoon break from a city council meeting, Milczyn – who currently represents Ward 5– said he was “absolutely” looking forward to hitting the campaign trail against Holyday again in advance of the June 12 provincial election.

Peter Milczyn

“I was approached by senior campaign people first, then the premier (Kathleen Wynne) called just to push me a little bit harder to say yes,” Milczyn said of his decision to once again pursue the Liberal party nomination in Etobicoke-Lakeshore. “It was a nice call to get, but really, for me, the issues were the same last summer as they are right now in terms of what her government is doing and proposing to do for EtobicokeLakeshore, Toronto, the GTA and the province, so it was an easy decision to make.”

When asked if he thinks the mayor’s scandal-plagued year has changed the political landscape in EtobicokeLakeshore to such a degree that Ford’s endorsement of Holyday won’t hold as much sway with voters, Milczyn agreed. “I think that was probably a double-edged sword, to the extent that it may have been to Doug Holyday’s advantage (during the byelection), but certainly that’s been diminished significantly since last summer,” he said. The key issue for Milczyn heading to the polls next month, he added, is transit infrastructure. “ We’ve lost so many decades of not building anything and we finally have a government that is actually building major transit in Toronto and elsewhere in the GTA...we can’t afford to fall behind on that again,” he said. – Cynthia Reason

Perks questions west-end private garbage contract DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Toronto council could be getting out of its private garbage collection contract in the city’s west end, if a provincial decision to downgrade contractor Green For Life’s safety rating to conditional indeed violates the contract with the company. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Gord Perks brought the motion to Tuesday’s council meeting, after GFL lost an appeal of a downgrading of its Commercial Vehicle Operators Rating to “conditional.” Early in this term of council, GFL won the contract to collect garbage in the city between Yonge Street and the Humber River. GFL gave the city a very low quotation for the contract, and city officials estimated

that would save the city $10 million a year compared to using city workers. The company started work in August 2012 – and while there were some complaints initially about the service, within months city officials said that the operation was running smoothly. Perks said he wants a report on what the conditional rating means for the city. In his motion, he noted that the contract stipulates that if an operator loses its certification it is unable to perform its duties and therefore is in a breech of contract. “We don’t have any information from staff yet to say whether this gives us the right to cancel their contract or just leads to a review or a penalty,” he said. “Whatever the options are, the goal has to be to have safe operations of garbage trucks on Toronto streets.”

P u b l i c Wo r k s a n d Infrastructure Chair Denzil Minnan-Wong said he wants to see a report too, but he said city numbers indicate that the GFL trucks are no more or less safe than the city-operated trucks east of Yonge Street. “Generally west of Yonge Street there are one or two incidents with damage over $1,000 a ticket each month,” he said. “East of Yonge, it’s the same. There really isn’t a significant and substantial difference between the public and private sector.” Perks, however, said he receives numerous complaints from his constituents about the GFL service. “I get complaints weekly from constituents in Ward 14... It’s been a matter of some concern.”

City moves to protect heritage of 51 Panorama Crt. Building used to be ‘country’ hospital for SickKids in 1920s TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The 1928 building that is the original Hospital for Sick Children “country” hospital in Thistletown will soon be added to the city’s inventory of heritage properties. Described as a “Palace of Sunshine,” the three-storey brick-and-stone clad hospital was custom-designed for children requiring helio (sun) therapy or long-term rehabilitation while recovering from rheumatic fever, polio or major surgery. It could accommodate 112 patients. Toronto City Council on Tuesday endorsed Etobicoke York Community Council’s April recommendation that council include 51 Panorama Crt. on the city’s list of heritage properties. Council

further agreed to request the city’s director of urban design identify potential heritage landscape attributes and landmark uses in an amended listed report to a future meeting of the Toronto Preservation Board. The trigger to list the property came last June when community council learned the Ontario government would be closing the Thistletown Regional Centre for Children and Adolescents, which has operated on the property for years, and the property would be offered for sale, a February city planning report indicates. Thistletown Regional Centre is a children’s mental health centre offering specialized services and community supports to children, youth and families with complex

Council will include the building at 51 Panorama Crt. in north Etobiocke on its list of heritage properites.

mental health, behavioural or developmental challenges or who have experienced sexual abuse. Community council directed the city’s heritage preservation services to investigate the potential to include the property on the city’s list after concern was expressed that the heritage

value of the near century-old building be protected. Local heritage proponents had learned that Ontario government-owned properties cannot be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, but can be listed on the city’s heritage properties’ inventory, confirmed Denise Harris, Etobicoke Historical Society

heritage officer, who spoke at a March Toronto Preservation Board meeting in support of the building’s listing. The February 2014 city planning staff report cited the building’s heritage attributes. “(It) is an important representative and well-crafted example of a satellite hospital

building located in a rural setting designed in a Classical style by the architectural firm of Sproatt and Rolph whose work over 30 years made a significant contribution to both institutional and commercial architecture in Canada, but especially in Toronto,” the city staff report states. In April, the Toronto Preservation Board provided a supporting letter to community council stating the cultural heritage significance of the property. “The elements of style are evident in the symmetry and hierarchy, brick cladding combined with Caen stone elements such as the door and window surrounds, the string courses and cornices of the north facade and long colonnade of stone pilasters and loggia of Tuscan Doric columns on the south facade,” the Toronto Preservation Board submission reads.

Install air monitors along highways: TBOH TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Toronto City Council has endorsed taking action to reduce truck emissions and requesting the Ministry of the Environment install air monitoring stations close to major Toronto highways like Hwy. 427 and the Gardiner Expressway. Councillors adopted the Toronto Board of Health recommendations at council Tuesday, which came out of a city-initiated study of local air quality in south Etobicoke’s wards 5 and 6 presented to residents at an open house in January. The study’s assessment of 30 contaminants showed four contaminants exceeded air quality standards: nitrogen dioxide, benzene, particulate matter less than 10 microns, and particulate matter less than 2.5 microns. High traffic volumes, particularly trucks, on Hwy. 427 and the Gardiner Expressway and the particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide it emits is

the most significant source of concern in Wards 5 and 6, the study found. Yet there are no air monitoring stations near either highway, the study reported. Neighbourhoods adjacent to Hwy. 427 were found to have worse air quality than those flanking the Gardiner Expressway because Hwy. 427 has a greater volume of traffic, particularly trucks, Christopher Morgan with the city’s Environment and Energy Office said at the public meeting in January. Council endorsed the board of health’s recommendation it direct the city’s environment and energy division, in collaboration with the medical officer of health, to investigate and take appropriate action to encourage a reduction in truck emissions. This could include seeking federal government support for improved truck emissions across North America.

Swim clubs get $181K in city credits Aquatic clubs that use the Etobicoke Olympium have been thrown a lifeline by Toronto council – in the form of $181,000 in credits for the loss of the facilities for a year as it’s upgraded for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. The Olympic-sized pool will become a practice facility for the games next year, and in preparation, it’s been undergoing numerous renovations and upgrades. That has left the regular users of the facility high and dry – both this year and next year as the games get underway. Three clubs are affected, and will be receiving credits for each year. The Etobicoke Diving Club will receive two $38,500 credits; the Olympium Synchronized Swim Club will receive $22,000 a year; and Etobicoke Swimming will receive $30,000 a year. Council approved the plan without debate this week. – David Nickle

Free the Children campaign to build 200 schools in developing countries >>>from page 1 that, and we set out to prove them wrong,” said West, who was born with a genetic disease that caused the muscles in his legs not to work, necessitating them to be amputated just below the pelvis. “I think we did a pretty good job, because over the last six years on my journey with Free the Children, I had the opportunity to not only climb Mt. Kilamanjaro, the largest mountain in Africa, but also to walk from Edmonton to Calgary to raise funds and awareness for Free the Children communities around the world.” Those two feats of strength, endurance and fortitude helped West prove to himself that only he could “redefine his own possible”, and he’s gone on to become a top-ranked keynote speaker who’s shared the stage with the likes of former Vice President Al Gore, Dr. Jane Goodall and Martin Luther King III, as well as the author of the best-selling book Standing Tall: My Journey and star of the documentary, Redefine Possible: The Story of Spencer West. The challenge West has taken on for himself this year is to encourage students across the country to follow in his hand-steps with the

Around the world, there are kids just like you guys who want more than anything to have the opportunity to go to school. – Spyros “Spee” Chalkiotis, Neverest

We Create Change Tour, a 10-week, cross-country tour with stops at 90 different school communities aimed at challenging students to make a difference in the world. And it seems to be working. “I think Spencer has a great message, because I feel like kids our age, we have a certain amount of motivation to do things and to help people... but no one is willing to go that extra part because they feel they have a limitation of some sort,” said Stephanie Caines, a Grade 11 member of Michael Power/St. Joseph’s Free the Children Club. “I think with Spencer, with him not having legs, he’s taken that stereotype and crushed it. He said ‘I have no legs and I climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro, so you guys should be able to do anything you set your minds to.’”

And, if West has anything to say about it, that “anything” includes getting students to help Free the Children build schools. Over its 19-year history, Free the Children has helped fund and construct more than 650 school projects in 16 countries, allowing more than 55,000 students to attend class each year, West said. “And that’s the reason we are here today – because Free the Children is celebrating it’s 19th birthday this year, we’ve gone back to our roots and our goal is to build 200 more schools in developing communities around the world with We Create Change campaign,” he said, noting that the Toronto-based international charity, founded by Craig Kielburger, has named 2014 its Year of Education. With that campaign goal it was no coincidence the We Create Change Tour made a stop at Michael Power/ St. Joseph, whose students were lauded for their “phenomenal” Free the Children fundraising efforts over the years at Tuesday’s presentation. “You guys donated $108,700 in total and it doesn’t stop there,” cohost Spyros “Spee” Chalkiotis of Neverest told the cheering crowd.

“In case you don’t know what you’ve done: you’ve built 17 classrooms in seven countries – Nicaragua, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Ecuador, India. And an estimated 570 children are in classrooms everyday that you guys have funded.” West himself has seen first-hand the difference such a new classroom can make in the lives of children around the world. As Free the Children leadership facilitator, he takes students every summer to work on overseas school construction projects to see what education looks like outside of North America. While going to school every day is a given students here in Canada often grudgingly take for granted, elsewhere in the world education is a privilege only few can access, he said. “Around the world, there are kids just like you guys who want more than anything to have the opportunity to go to school, to learn to read and write, to have the opportunities that we so often take for granted,” he said, encouraging the students to help make those dreams come true.

Lakeshore LGBT community launches media campaign Aim is to combat homophobia on the international level CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A YouTube video bearing “heartbreaking” scenes of LGBT Russians being persecuted was all it took for Etobicoke’s Jamie Berardi to spring to action – if social media could be used to transmit such images of hate, he reasoned, imagine how powerfully it could broadcast even stronger messages of love and support. “I watched that video and people were being beaten by the police, and eggs were being thrown at them, and they were being tear-gassed, and it just broke my heart,” Berardi, co-founder of the Lakeshore Villages LGBT Community, said at the launch of the group’s #LS4Love (Lake Shore 4 Love) photo-sharing social media campaign last week at Lakeshore Arts.

“You see in the news what’s happening to the LGBT communities in places like Uganda and Russia, and all over the world there has been a recent outpouring of homophobia. So, I looked at myself and my position as the face of the LGBT community here in the lakeshore, and I thought there has to be something we can do to help these people and to show them our support.” Both the Ugandan and Russian governments each signed anti-homosexuality laws within the last year – in Uganda, a February law prohibiting “any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex” under threat of life imprisonment, while in Russia, President Vladimir Putin last June signed an antigay law banning the promotion of “non-tradition sexual relationships” to minors.

Claudia Zirizzotti has her photo taken during the Lakeshore 4 Love campaign at Lakeshore Arts. Passersby got a free professional photograph and tweeted their support of LGBT communities facing homophobia in Russia and Uganda.

Condemning such laws as both “dehumanizing and wrong”, Berardi, a local activist and public relations professional, said the goal of the #LS4Love photo-sharing campaign is to create a visual online support system for LGBT individuals in Russia

and Uganda. “I felt a photo-sharing campaign would be the best way to get the message of support across from our community to theirs across the world,” he said. “It’s a way for our community to show that we have a vibrant LGBT

While the younger kids promptly set about happily decorating their #LS4Love signs with pictures of rainbows and hearts, Laxer, Lochwin and Nathaniel spoke to the importance of the campaign. “We’ve both been involved in supporting the Lakeshore LGBT group since its inception through our store, because we think it’s a very important initiative,” Laxer said. “And we came out today because we think it’s important for the kids to understand the significance of human rights struggles around the world.” Added Nathaniel: “I think everyone deserves equal rights. It’s important.” Berardi’s hope is that the campaign will go viral and that other LGBT communities will launch their own #4Love sister campaigns.

A fourth R will be added to the list of educational foundations Toronto’s Catholic students will undergo standardized testing for next school year. In addition to reading, writing and arithmetic testing, Catholic elementary school students will now also be asked to complete a standardized “religious knowledge assessment”, Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) trustees decided at their April 30 board meeting. In a vote of 5-3, trustees approved the motion put forth by Scarborough/North York Trustee John Del Grande proposing the testing for students in grades 4 and 7. “Catholic schools are extensions of the Catholic church and home, and it is our responsibility to ensure we are developing wellformed Catholic students who are knowledgeable about core tenants of our faith,” Del Grande’s motion reads, noting the standardized religious knowledge assessment will seek “to measure pieces of the Religious/Family Life program pertaining to retention/understanding of faith tenants and liturgical practices.” In an interview with the Etobicoke Guardian this week, Del Grande said the assessment will not – and cannot – act as a test of TCDSB students’ faith, but more as a measure of their religious knowledge retention. “Religious education is one of the subjects that really doesn’t get graded at an overall level on a report card, but it’s a core component of what’s being taught in our classrooms and we want to make sure there’s a

My experience with the kids in our schools, at least locally for me, is that they’re putting their faith into practice. And for me, that speaks volumes. – Ann Andrachuk

standardized way of assessing our students,” he said. “One of the purposes of Catholic schools is to provide a Catholic education...and while it’s impossible to test faith, you can test to make sure there’s that basic knowledge in terms of understanding the core curriculum and core teachings.” Del Grande said reaction to his motion has been mixed, with teachers unions objecting to the new standardized religious knowledge assessment and parents mainly supportive of the move. Teresa Pierre, president of the Catholic parents group Parents As First Educators (PAFE), said she is in full support of the move for the “better accountability and greater fidelity to the faith” the testing will bring. “Parents will appreciate the greater accountability for student achievement in the religious curriculum provided by regular testing,” she said in a statement. “Even more important, we will be able to identify students who are behind, so they can get help, and those who are ahead, so they can be given more challenging work.” Etobicoke Trustee Ann Andrachuk, meanwhile, was one of the three trustees present at the April 30 TCDSB meeting who voted against implementing the

measure. While Andrachuk previously supported Del Grande’s standardized religious knowledge assessment proposal when it was being piloted in the mid-2000s, she said she has since had a change of opinion. “What we determined from the (pilot) testing was that, in fact, our students were doing very well from the knowledge point of view in the religious testing,” she said in an interview this week. “My experience with the kids in our schools, at least locally for me, is that they’re putting their faith into practice. And for me, that speaks volumes,” she added. can’t ask for more “So I don’t think (testing) is one of those necessary tools any longer, the way I initially did when I was a new trustee on the board. If they’re walking the walk and talking the talk, then we can’t ask more for our kids.” Del Grande said he believes the new standardized religious knowledge assessment program will be in place in TCDSB schools in time for the 2014-’15 school year (although Ukrainian rite schools will be exempted at this time due to the Roman Rite focus). His motion was supported by Trustees Patrizia Bottoni ( Ward 4 - North York), Frank D’Amico (Ward 6 - York), Garry Tanuan (Ward 8 - Scarborough) and Angela Kennedy ( Ward 11 - East York/Toronto). Tr ustees Andrachuk, Jo-Ann Davis ( Ward 9 Toronto) and Nancy Crawford ( Ward 12 - Scarborough) voted against it.

SickKids launches its Healthy and Happy campaign Month-long initiative promotes proper exercise, nutrition and sleep for youngsters JUsTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With concerns mounting that today’s kids could be the first generation with shorter lifespans than their parents, the SickKids Foundation is once again turning May into a month that puts children’s health in the limelight. SickKids launched its third annual Healthy and Happy campaign, a month-long initiative to promote proper exercise, nutrition and sleep for youngsters. “We’re on a mission to educate the public about the importance of healthy, active living for kids,” said SickKids President and CEO Mike Apkon. “The campaign is built on one simple premise: every child deserves to be healthy and happy.” According to a national opinion poll conducted by SickKids, 78 per cent of adults feel kids today are getting less exercise than they did, while 65 per cent believe kids today have poorer eating habits.

Active Kids Dr. Jill Hamilton noted that unhealthy lifestyles have completely shifted the types of care children need, creating a spate of new health problems. “As an endocrinologist, 30 years ago, Type 2 diabetes was really not a diagnosis in children and now it...can make up a fairly substantial amount of patients,” she said. Hamilton said how much children eat can be less important than what they eat. “It’s not just about the weight,” she said. Daini Kalnins, director of clinical dietetics for SickKids concurred. She said even seemingly healthy choices such as fruit juice can be laden with sugar, while others still rely on sugary pop for a quick pick-me-up. “A lot of the energy kids get today are from beverages that are loaded with sugar and have no nutritional value,” she said. “Milk and water should be the beverages of choice for most children.” Dr. Greg Wells, a scientist in the field of physiology and experimental

medicine, said exercise is a crucial piece of the puzzle. Kids should be getting at least 60 minutes a day of exercise, a bar many are failing to meet.

Dr. Indra Narang added that improper sleep can also lead to poor health, with studies showing that even minimal sleep deprivation can result in mental slowness and physical impacts. She pointed out exhaustion can lead children to eat unhealthily as well. “When (kids are) tired, they’re not going to seek out an apple or a salad,” she said. “They’re going to look for a sugary candy bar.” In addition to physical health problems, being overweight or obese can lead to other health issues as well. Psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Dettmer noted an informal poll showed obese children reported feeling they had the same quality of life as cancer patients despite the fact the latter often had to face invasive treatments on a regular basis. “Weight is the No. 1 reason kids are bullied today,” she said.

key to health He noted proper exercise is a key to better health for children all along the health spectrum. “We’re using exercise to actually diagnose diseases better, we’re using exercise to prevent disease and we’re using exercise to help treat chronic illnesses,” he said. Jennifer Cowie Bonne, CEO of Active Kids Canada, concurred but noted that while the benefits of exercise are widely known, it is still not a priority for many. With technology leading to increasingly sedentary lifestyles, she said only five per cent of kids were reaching the required 60 minutes of exercise a day. “Just going out the door (to play) is something that does not happen,” she said.

After a six-month hiatus, Etobicoke Musical Productions is gearing up to be back on stage with a kind of performance they’ve never done before. Spring into Song: Selections from Broadway’s Best! is Etobicoke Musical Productions’ (EMP) comeback show. Instead of its usual musical production, this will be a cabaret-style revue of the best songs from Broadway’s most well-known musicals. The show will feature a selection of songs from classic musicals like Guys and Dolls through to the modern ones such as Rent and Chicago, said the show’s artistic director, Allison Beula. Beula said she and musical director Mark Peterson, collaborated to choose the songs that would best suit the performers vocal talent along with what they felt audiences would enjoy. “We chose songs that the older patrons would recognize and feel really good about hearing, and also more contemporary songs so that the younger audience, the newer musical theatre crowd, would enjoy, so we have songs ranging from 1930s to the 2010s,” Beula said. They will be singing songs from everything from Brigadoon, Mame and Follies, to songs from modern shows like Titanic and Sideshow. While the show is a selection of songs, Beula said it is still a properly staged show

with songs that have the proper emotional flow and feel. The show begins with ‘Seasons of Love’ from Rent which Beula said is a nice song that celebrates spring, unity and people, which she said is a great theme for EMP. This is because the group, which has not staged a show since last spring, is finally on their way back to the stage. Last fall, EMP was two weeks away from opening its show Bye Bye Birdie, when the group was locked out of its home venue, The Burnhamthorpe Auditorium, by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). “Our technical guys went in the first of November to do some lighting adjustments, we were opening the show on the 16th of November, and on Nov. 1 when they went in there, there was someone from TDSB saying, ‘Sorry, we’ve locked the theatre,” said EMP’s president, Tom MacFarlane. Turns out a safety audit ordered by the school board found a number of issues that were not up to code,

MacFarlane said. “After getting a copy of the audit, MacFarlane said some of the issues had to do with work EMP had done over the 15 years they were there, which he said were improvements but not up to code. Some of it was electrical, some of it was smaller stuff like a clamp that wasn’t stamped properly. “But the larger issue such as the ceiling in the auditorium was no longer up to code, and the walkways to access the lighting was no longer up to code because codes change in 50 years and (the school board) had done absolutely nothing in that theatre since it was built which was 1952,” he said. Forced to move out, EMP will now be staging some of its future shows – and its upcoming concert – at The Assembly Hall. Beula said, with all that has happened with EMP they want to make this show not just a celebration of Broadway, but also the people of EMP both past and present, and its new start.

Spring into Song: Selections from Broadway’s Best! May 16 – 17, 8pm, and a 2 p.m. matinee on May 18, at The Assembly Hall, 1 Colonel Samuel Smith Park Dr. Tickets are $23 and available at www.em-p.ca or by calling the box office at 416-2480410.

The results are in, and the name of a new waterfront street is Merchants’ Wharf. The “main street” for the emerging East Bayfront residential development on the water’s edge and connecting to Queen’s Quay, Merchants’ Wharf was one of 700 suggestions for a naming contest organized by Waterfront Toronto. Submitted by Daniel Thompson, the name received nearly 40 per cent of some 2,200 votes cast during the online contest that ended May 1. Runners-up included Kanadario Way – Iroquois for “sparkling” water – and Water Street. The naming choice must still be approved by Toronto East York Community Council, which is expected to take place in June. rentals at go train stations wzipcar

Last week the TTC board heard a presentation on the project that has concerned some local residents worried about worsening road congestion and an uptick in diesel emissions in the area caused by increased bus traffic. Meeting on West Humber CI field improvements in auditorium May 13 Learn about West Humber Collegiate Institute field improvements. The Toronto Distr ict School Board (TDSB) invites students, parents and the community to a meeting on Tuesday, May 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the auditorium of the school, 1675 Martin Grove Rd. The field strategy is based on a public-private partnership that will transform a selected number of existing TDSB sports fields into yearround, state-of-the-art championship field facilities. The program, according to the TDSB, aims to improve access and programming to students; provide facilities to host TDSB sports competi-

Brown tagged as OHL’s most outstanding player Etobicoke’s Connor Brown of the Erie Otters led the Ontario Hockey League in scoring during the regular season and on Tuesday he was named by the league as its Most Outstanding Player of the Year. “This is such a prestigious award,” said Brown, in a league media release on Tuesday.

CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON: The championship Lanor JMS team. Back row, left to right: Eric Galipeau, Erik McAndrew, Owen Toddington, Evan Udvarnoky, Mathew D’Allesandro, Juan Ramirez, volunteer coach Tony Sturino, Devonte McGill-Cullen and Tyriek McGill-Cullen. Front row: Kyle Dwyer, Shea Eardley, Robert Calisti and Dirk Stadig. Goalie: Zion Micelli. Absent: GM and teacher Kathy Coyle.

Lanor school wins TDSB title The Lanor Junior Middle School senior hockey team are taking good memories into the off-season. The hockey squad saved their best ‘till last, playing probably their best game of

the season at Varsity Stadium to win the Toronto District School Board elementary school hockey title in March 5-2 over King Edward Junior and Senior Public School from downtown Toronto.

Earlier, Lanor had won their west division title 6-2 over James S. Bell Junior Middle School in a battle of south Etobicoke schools. For list of players, see above photo.

“So many great players have won this before me and it is an honour to be mentioned among those names. “This honour makes my family and I very proud to see a lot of hard work pay off.” A former student at Etobicoke’s Michael Power/St Joseph Catholic Secondary, Brown was the league’s top

scorer, setting a franchise record with 128 points in 68 games including 45 goals and 83 assists leading the Otters to their best season in team history with 52 wins and 106 points. The 20-year-old rising hockey star was selected in the sixth round (156th overall) by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2012 draft.

Toronto Lakeshore Patriots off to nationals in B.C. The Toronto Lakeshore Patriots only lost one game at the central Canadian junior A hockey championship tournament (known as the Dudley Hewitt Cup) last week – to the host Wellington Dukes. Fo r t u n a t e l y f o r t h e Etobicoke-based team they were able to avenge that loss with a nail-biting 2-1 win in the Saturday, May 3 championship game.

As a result, the Patriots, who are based out of Etobicoke’s Westwood Arena, will move on to the RBC Cup Canadian Jr. A championship tournament May 10 to 18 in Vernon, B.C. The Patriots are enjoying an outstanding post season, so far. At last week’s Dudley Hewitt Cup, which also featured both the Northern O n t a r i o a n d Su p e r i o r

International junior hockey league champs (Kirkland Lake and Fort Frances, respectively), they finished up with four wins to go along with their lone loss to Wellington, 5-3 in the preliminary round. In capturing their Ontario provincial Jr. A championship they won four series, needing only three games above the minimum (16 wins, three losses).

CONTEST WINNER

Mayor’s cricket tourney May 12 to 16; North Albion CI defending champs JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Young cricketers from across Toronto are getting set to take to the pitch for the CIMA Mayor’s School Cricket Championship. This year’s tournament will take place at Eglinton Flats Park, G. Ross Lord Park and Sunnybrook Park May 12 to 16. The sport of cricket is growing quickly in the city, with students at more and more schools taking up the sport each year. “When it was launched (in 2011), the objective was to have 50 teams participating within three years,” said Martin Saxton, chair of the Canadian Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), one of the organizations sponsoring the event. “We had 60 last year

and we’ll have more than 70 this year.” The annual tournament has become a fixture on the school athletic scene since its inception, with the North Albion Collegiate Institute Cougars – a team that hails from close to Mayor Rob Ford’s home – winning the high school boys’ title last year. “It was very, very competitive this (past) year, just as it was last year,” Ford said as he launched this year’s tournament at the Cabbagetown Youth Centre (CYC) last month. Teams from Etobicoke to Scarborough fared well last year. York Memorial Collegiate took home the girls’ high school trophy, while Valley Park Middle School took home the boys’ middle school trophy C.W. Jeffer ys student

Chevaughn Smith took home best batsman honours as the top offensive player in last year’s tournament and was awarded a trophy for his achievement at this year’s tourney launch. He has been playing cricket for years but did not notice it gaining traction in Toronto until recently. “Over the past couple of years, I’ve seen people starting to play but until then it wasn’t really a big thing in Toronto,” he said. “I think when more people start to play it, it will get bigger.” At the mid-April launch event British Consul General Jonathan Dart said the sport is quickly picking up players and supporters. “I really look forward to the day when Canada achieves status as a testplaying cricket nation,” he said.

Mimico Mountaineers set to host three-game homestand Home proved sweet for the Mimico Mountaineers Jr. B lacrosse team, winning their opener on Saturday, May 3 10-5 over the Mississauga Tomahawks. The two neighboring arch rivals were slated to hook up again last night (Wednesday, May 7) with Mississauga hosting.

Mimico, who lost its first two games on the road, then settle into Mimico Arena for a three-game homestand – this Saturday, May 10, 7 p.m. vs Nepean Knights; Sunday, May 11, 2 p.m. vs Gloucester Griffins; and Friday, May 16, 8 p.m. against the Bowmanvillebased Green Gaels. The Mimico Mountaineers

Jr. C club opened its season with a home win, 7-5 over Wilmot last Sunday. They play two more at home: Friday, May 9, 8 p.m. against Hamilton; and Sunday, May 11, 6 p.m. against Six Nations.
