A ‘novel’ idea for free library to be launched in south Etobicoke Little Free Library based on ‘take a book, leave a book’ concept CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Two colourful new libraries are set to open down at Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus next month, featuring 24/7 access, no membership required, and, perhaps best of all, no late fees.

Based on the global ‘take a book, leave a book’ movement, Humber’s new mini libraries – two house-shaped, neonpainted book boxes soon to be stocked with donated books and mounted on posts birdhousestyle at two locations on campus – were the brainchild of library technician Denise Rooney.

“In an academic type of library, we really don’t have that many leisure reading books, just a lot of textbooks,” she said. “So, one day as I was walking through the neighbourhood with a colleague, we passed a house on 27th Street with a book stand out front, and I thought it was such a good idea. I wanted

to see if we could do something like that here for our students at Humber and for the greater Lakeshore community to help share the love of reading.” Inspired by that book stand, Rooney teamed up with fellow Humber librarian Aliya Dalfen to write up a proposal for a simi>>>TWO, page 14

Etobicoke Centre Conservative MP Ted Opitz reported an air of “optimism” as voters mobilized en masse Sunday to overwhelmingly elect chocolate tycoon Petro Poroshenko as Ukraine’s next president. Opitz spoke from Warsaw on Wednesday awaiting a NATO conference after his third observer mission in Ukraine to report a “free, fair, well-run” election in Kharkiv, the secondlargest city in Ukraine some 30 kilometres from the Russian border. Opitz and three other Canadian parliamentarians, Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash, MP James Bezan and MP David Christopherson, acted as election observers in that city. ECC’s Mikado “a blast” for concertgoers: director NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com This summer, comedy and music will be in perfect harmony in a “Far East meets Toronto west” performance. The Etobicoke Centennial Choir (ECC) will perform the popular comic opera The Mikado with two shows in June. The Mikado, set in Japan, follows the romantic rivalry of the minstrel son of a monarch and the tailor determined to execute him. Music director Henry Renglich said the audience is in for an evening of fun, as a break from the season’s usual repertoire. “We like to do one lighter concert in the year and there’s some fabulous sing-

ing and lots of parody of 19th century English society in this piece,” Renglich said. Along with the choir, the operetta will feature nine soloists, including performers from Toronto’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society, dedicated to creators Sir William Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. The piece will be fully choreographed, including a dance by father and daughter performers Roy and Laura Schatz. The performers will also be in full costume, rented from the Alexander Singers and Players. The Kincardine Theatre Gu i l d w i l l p rov i d e t h e “Mikado” costume. As for the laughs, the music director said the words themselves are “absolutely brilliant.”

One of Renglich’s favourite songs of the piece, “As Some Day It May Happen” includes a list of people society could do without. He said the song “Three Little Maids From School” will be also be familiar for most audiences. This not the first Gilbert and Sullivan piece performed by the ECC. Last year, the choir chose another favourite, The Pirates of Penzance. Still, Renglich said The Mikado is “probably one of the most popular pieces.” “It really is a blast,” Renglich said. The Mikado performances will be held at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd. on June 6 and 7.

To say Martingrove Collegiate Institute simply reached for the top this year would be an understatement – they conquered it. The school’s five-member Reach for the Top team – consisting of Mark Greig, Paul Kasinski, Fox Slawnych, and brothers Isaac and Jonah Thiessen – emerged triumphant from the Canadian championships on Monday, bringing home Martingrove CI’s first ever national trophy from the highly competitive trivia tournament. “We have a tradition at Martingrove that goes back decades, but in the last five or six years, we’ve really been knocking on the door. We’ve

been really strong,” said coach Michael Goldberg, noting that the team made its first appearance at the nationals in recent history just last year. “I think a lot of it is just hard work. These guys, without much pushing from me, spent their lunch hours reading question pack after question pack...they really work hard as a team and, on top of that, have fun doing it.” Reach for the Top sees two teams of four armed with buzzers and asked questions on a wide range of curriculum-based subjects. After each question is read, the team that buzzes in first with the correct answer is awarded points. The Martingrove CI team emerged from the national tournament’s round-robin competition, held over the weekend at University of Toronto Schools (UTS), with a 9-5 record against what

Goldberg called a “really tough” field of 15 competitors hailing from the top-placing Canadian schools. Determined not to let the pressure of the competition get to them, Goldberg said the Martingrove team spent its time between games playing frisbee in the park behind UTS rather than studying like the other teams – a laid-back strategy that worked well for them. A f t e r a h a rd - f o u g h t battle with Central London Secondary School, Martingrove came on out top by a score of 390-290. “I was just really proud, and I was just thinking about all the students that came before them that led up to this,” Goldberg said of his reaction to Martingrove’s very first – but hopefully not last – national championship.

Excitement builds over World Cup

he World Cup soccer championship officially kicks off June 12 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a game between the host country and Croatia, but the excitement in Toronto is already starting to build. Short of being in Brazil, Toronto has to be the best place in the world for soccer fans to watch the World Cup. Most residents are already very familiar with how our city gets all dressed up and celebrates World Cup. Beyond the flags waving from cars, there are vendors selling hats, shirts and flags, and fans gathering in locations across Toronto to catch the action. Everybody will be talking soccer between June 12 and July 13, when the tourney wraps up with the championship game in Rio. There are 32 teams taking part in the World Cup and Toronto has significant our view demographic links to many of those teams. For instance, the Italian, Greek, Portuguese, German, English, French and Dutch diasporas are large and well established throughout the city. We’re all familiar with scenes of flag-waving fans filling the streets and celebrating after their teams win. Parts of Little Italy, Little Portugal, Corso Italia, and Greektown on the Danforth are seas of celebrating fans after wins by their teams. What’s especially interesting and makes the World Cup in our city so much fun is the mixing of fan bases, and how the Brazilian fans will watch and celebrate in Little Portugal, and parts of Corso Italia along St. Clair West have also become home-base for many fans with links to South American teams other than Brazil. North York has a strong centre of fans of African teams, and is also where Iranian fans gather. It’s all a part of what makes Toronto great. Tory’s transit plan both compelling, speculative

h, John Tory is a coy one. All this time when the mayoral candidate was talking about building a “Yonge Street Relief Line,” we assumed that he was simply renaming the Downtown Relief Line – and that his promise to start building the thing right away, at the same time as the city and province built a subway to Scarborough, was pie-inthe-sky. Well, it turns out the reason Tory didn’t call his secret transit plan the downtown relief line was he doesn’t intend to build the downtown relief subway line any time soon. His Yonge Street Relief line is something else: a 52-kilometre, 22-stop SmartTrack line, using GO Transit rail lines for an above-ground subway that will stretch from the western reaches of Etobicoke to the middle of Scarborough, and dip

david nickle the city south to Union Station touching Main Station in the east and Dundas West station in the west. It will cost $8 billion divided between three levels of government, and the city will pay for its portion using Tax Increment Financing (TIF), the same system of borrowing against future property assessment increases that Gordon Chong advocated when Mayor Rob Ford hired him to come up with a funding plan for his failed subway proposal on Sheppard Avenue. The idea itself is a refinement and expansion of a proposal that failed 2010 mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi proposed – to use GO lines as an interim downtown relief line. And it is a compelling idea. It provides rapid commuter transit to places

that are pretty far off, and gives commuters from the edge of the subway system an alternative to clogging up the Bloor-Yonge interchange as they head to work downtown. It is also, in the context of this election, a too-cute game of rope-a-dope: an attempt to get his opponents to spend their energy attacking and questioning a suspected plan that is nothing like the real plan. For a short time after its revelation, it forces Tory’s opponents to basically call him on his semantics. It also, however, allows his opponents to accuse him of hiding a flip-flop behind semantics. Earlier in the campaign, Tory did make it clear that a downtown relief subway line was essential, and sharply criticized Chow and Ford for not embracing it as a number-one priority. And while it is true that the new plan sidesteps

some of the logistical problems of getting a downtown relief subway going right away, it raises other problems. To begin with, the TIF model of financing is another semantic trick: it is debt by another name, and with the billion-dollar Scarborough subway plan, Toronto will have nearly reached its debt ceiling. And like Chow’s downtown relief plan, Tory’s surface rail plan relies on a massive federal and provincial buy-in to go ahead, and in that sense, is just as speculative. The plan also doesn’t obviate the need for the TTC’s downtown relief line – the city has to find the money for that too. Disabled children can batter up with new Challenger Baseball team

More players, volunteers, sponsors needed to launch summer program in Etobicoke CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Xavier “Chief” Calderon can hit a baseball like nobody’s business, while Jaden Pereux boasts an outfielder’s long-throwing arm and Michael Cachia looks to have the eye of an ace pitcher. Together, the baseball-loving trio from Central Etobicoke High School are hoping to make a formidable debut in league baseball this summer – but unlike their ablebodied peers, all three boys face barriers that have precluded them from participating in the popular pastime in summers past. Enter Challenger Baseball. Adopted by Baseball Canada and championed by the Toronto Blue Jays, Challenger Baseball is a program that gives kids like Xavier, Jaden and Michael with cognitive or physical disabilities the opportunity to play the game at a level structured to their abilities in a fun, safe environment. “The goal is just to get everyone on the field and have a good time,” said Steven Pinnock, who, in his dual roles as executive director of Best Buddies and board member of the Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA), is trying to launch a Challenger Baseball program in Etobicoke this summer. In order to do so, however, Pinnock said he needs more player recruits to round out a least a team or two, plus some volunteers and sponsors to help make it all come together. “We want it to be just like every other team – to have a designated field, to have a permit, to have your umpire, to have your players, to have your coach. We want this to feel just as important as any other baseball league, not just tucked away in a back field somewhere,” he said. So far, Pinnock has the full backing of the EBA in launching a Challenger Baseball program within its ranks. Longtime EBA president Tony Di Rollo said that while the six leagues that fall under the association’s umbrella – including Bloordale, Martingrove, Rexdale, Royal York and Weston baseball, as well as the Etobicoke Girls Softball League – already boast some players with disabilities, he would like to see a

Challenger Baseball program expand that participation. “I think that, as a baseball association, it would be great if we could try to see what we can do to give the same opportunities to kids with disabilities and their parents as we currently do with our other teams,” he said, noting that EBA is currently reaching out to Etobicoke families of children with disabilities to recruit

new players. To date, there are 48 leagues like EBA in Canada that host the Challenger Baseball program – the vast majority of them in British Columbia. How it works is this: able-bodied ‘buddies’ are assigned (one-on-one, where possible) to each Challenger player, and are tasked with assisting that player with their involvement

in the game – from pushing their wheelchairs around the bases, to assisting players in how to hold the bat and swing, to providing protection for the player from a batted ball. The key to the program is that each Challenger player is treated like every other player in more conventional baseball programs: all are outfitted with uniforms, use

the same equipment and play their games at the same local baseball parks. For teens like Jaden, Xavier and Michael, such a program would give each the opportunity to be part of a team, develop their physical and social skills, and – perhaps best of all – show off their baseball skills. “Just because they’re in chairs doesn’t mean they can’t play,” Sandy Sarna, one of the boys’ educational assistants at Central Etobicoke High, said last week while out with the trio on the school’s baseball diamond. “So I think this is fantastic. I think it’s the best thing they can do for these guys, because they kind of get the raw end of the deal sometimes and it’s nice to see that people are caring enough to come out and support them.” Decked out in baseball gear, meanwhile, the boys themselves were ready to get out and showcase their talents with bat and ball. “I have a really good throw,” said Jaden, who was the very first player to sign up for Challenger Baseball in Etobicoke. “I can throw really far.” Added a bat-swinging Xavier: “I like hitting. I have a really strong arm.” To help make the boys’ baseball dreams a reality, however, Pinnock said EBA needs more recruits to join them in rounding out a few teams of five – and so far, they only have four potential Challenger players signed up, including eager prospective players Jaden, Xavier and Michael. “We hope to start this season if we get enough players, but if not, it’ll be next season,” Pinnock said, noting that all Etobicoke kids aged four and up with cognitive or physical disabilities are invited to sign up for the free Challenger Baseball program. “We really want to do this right, and we need players to play.” Anyone interested in signing up their child for Challenger Baseball, or volunteering themselves as a coach, umpire or ‘buddy’ is asked to contact Pinnock at sp@bestbuddies.ca or 416-531-0003, or Di Rollo at president@etobicokebaseball.com said they are also looking for local businesses and companies interested in sponsoring a team. Melanoma survivor to walk in upcoming Relay for Life Bela Cumberbatch is living proof that Canadians can survive melanoma, one of the fastest rising cancers among men and women, the Canadian Cancer Society reported Wednesday. Cumberbatch, 32, and her family, will be participating for the fourth year in the Etobicoke Relay for Life being held on Friday, June 6 at Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA) on Royal York Road north of The Queensway. The team is comprised, in part, of four cancer survivors. Relay for Life is an inspirational, non-competitive, 12-hour overnight fundraising event that brings the community together to celebrate life and to fight cancer.

A new mom to son Christian in February, Cumberbatch was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2010 after noticing a dark-looking freckle on her breast. A biopsy revealed it was melanoma. She had surgery to remove the cancerous lesion. Today, her body is scarred from subsequent procedures to remove new growths. “I see cancer as a big war, with lots of battles and warriors lost in the process. For me, Relay For Life is a chance to celebrate our victories and honour those we have lost,” Cumberbatch said in a statement. “There are no other cancer fundraisers out there that compare on an emotional level.”

Big city mayors want to upload costs Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly convinced other mayors from large cities to ask the province and federal government to upload the costs of social services and public housing starting in 2018. Kelly made the pitch at the recent Large Urban Mayors Caucus of Ontario meeting. The group had previously set three priorities that it wanted to review with the leaders of the three provin-

cial parties: gridlock and transportation, job creation, and the cost of emergency services. Kelly convinced them to add a fourth: public housing and social services upload. The cost of both of these services has been disproportionately an issue for Toronto, which through Toronto Community Housing is the largest landlord in the province.

Kelly said that the cost of those services is a $300 million burden now and will grow to $450 million as the federal government reduces funding. “You’re looking at an enormous amount of money that if not uploaded by the provincial government or funded by the federal government will fall on the property taxpayer,” Kelly said. - David Nickle

Two locations to be unveiled on June 4 >>>from page 1 lar project based on the Little Free Library initiative, which was founded by Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin in 2009. In the five years since, the Little Free Library initiative has exploded globally, with the total number of registered Little Free Libraries around the world conservatively estimated to be nearly 15,000 as of January 2014. After Rooney and Dalfen’s proposal received a seal of approval from Humber Libraries Director Lynne Bentley and Lakeshore Campus Principal Wanda Buote, they applied to become a charter member of the Little Free Library, then enlisted the help of their

Student Library Advisory Council (SLAC) members to design the book boxes, brainstorm locations, and gather donated books to stock them with. Rooney’s husband Paul and son Liam then built the boxes, complete with shingled roofs and plexiglass doors, while the student SLAC members gave the boxes a colourful design, courtesy of a neon paint job. Now that the boxes are fully complete and ready to stock with the dozens of book donations that have already rolled in – a range of leisure reading favourites from John Grisham thrillers, to cook books, to Harry Potter and the Hunger Games – Rooney said they’ll soon be installed

Man charged in child sex assault case Toronto Police Services have issued a sexual assault alert – police officers from the sex crimes, child and youth advocacy centre, arrested a man in connection with an investigation into the sexual assault of children. It is alleged the man was familiar with two children and their families; he was a person whom they trusted. Police say he placed himself in a position to be alone with the children and sexually assaulted them on two occasions: a girl, 3, in 2007, a boy, 4, in 2013. Police arrested Robert Dunford, 49, Wednesday, May 21. He is charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference. He appeared in court at Old City Hall, May 21. One of his bail conditions forbids him to be in the presence of anyone under the age of 16 unless directly and knowingly supervised by a person over the age of 18 years of age, except his own children. Police believe there may be more victims.

Cabbie attacked by passengers A 35-year-old male taxi driver had to be transported to hospital early Saturday after being assaulted by three male fares near Silverstone and Mount Olive drives. According to police, the cabbie picked the three men up in the Eglinton Avenue and Yonge Street area at 1:30 a.m., but when they arrived at their destination in Etobicoke, the suspects refused to pay, assaulting the driver, stealing his cash and fleeing the scene. The victim sustained was treated in hospital. The suspects are described as follows: the first is white, aged 30 to 32, with a heavy build; the second is white, 5’10”, aged 30, with a medium build; the third is white, aged 20 to 25,

Toronto EMS transported a 23-year-old man to hospital Friday following a swarming robbery near John Garland Boulevard and Martin Grove Road. According to police, two males approached the victim in the area at around 10:11 p.m., grabbed his cellphone, then fled the scene. A chase then ensued, during which the victim was swarmed by six more males. The victim sustained minor injuries. The first suspect is black, 18 to 20, 5’10”, 201 pounds, with a heavy build and black hair; the second is 5’9”, 150 pounds, with a thin build. No descriptions are available for the others.

Catholic board creates educational hub with new school Construction could begin as early as June or July

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com While shovels have yet to break ground at the lakeshore site of a new amalgamated Catholic elementary school in Etobicoke, its future school communities have already come together to give it a new name. The new Toronto Catholic District School Board ( TCDSB) school, which will bring together students from Christ the King and St. Teresa Catholic schools under one new, state-of-the-art roof on the grounds of Colonel Samuel Smith Park, will be called The Holy Trinity. The name, said Etobicoke Trustee Ann Andrachuk, is one that was chosen through consultation between herself, the school communities, local pastors and Archbishop Thomas Collins. “Both schools came to the consensus that they would go with The Holy Trinity, and I can see where they’re coming from because they’re amalgamating the two schools, so there’s some symbolism there,” Andrachuk said, noting the alternative name on the shortlist was

Our Lady of the Lake. “There was a lot of discussion and a lot of input locally. Everybody had an opportunity to speak, the majority ruled and I think it’s a good name. Angelo Sangiorgio, TCDSB’s associate director of Planning and Facilities, said the board is hoping to get the new school’s site plan approval and building permit approved this spring or early summer, so that they can get shovels in the ground as soon as possible. “Construction will commence immediately upon receipt of the building permit, which hopefully we’ll have in June or July,” he said, noting that construction will take an estimated 12 to 15 months if there’s no “hiccups.” The goal, he added, is for construction to be completed sometime in the fall of 2015, with students moving into their new school in

Remembering the lessons of the ‘little red schoolhouse’

he iconic ‘little red s c h o o l h o u s e’ h a s all but disappeared from Ontario’s landscape, but once upon a time, those stalwart brick buildings with one room and one teacher were the mainstay of our educational system. Highfield was a village in Etobicoke at the western end of today’s Rexdale Boulevard. John Moody settled in the area in 1831 and three years later married Sarah Gardhouse. Their great-greatgrandson, Nelson Moody, attended Highfield’s school, as did many members of his family before him. Recently, Nelson got in touch with me and kindly shared pictures and stories of his ‘little red schoolhouse’. In 1845, School Section No. 6 was organized in Highfield and a log schoolhouse was built at Rexdale and Martin Grove. School attendance was made compulsory in Ontario the next year. had any plumbing, so the toilets emptied directly into pipes leading underground. Many a hat was lost down those pipes, thanks to student pranksters. Etobicoke’s population increased rapidly during the post-war boom and in 1949 the Etobicoke Board of Education was formed. The board built new, larger schools across the township, making the little red schoolhouses redundant. Highfield’s school closed in 1954 and the children were then bussed to Thistletown. The school was demolished to widen Hwy. 27 in 1957. In 1964, a new Highfield Junior School opened on Mount Olive Drive, and the old “School Section No. 6” stone is now mounted in that school’s lobby.

Highfield’s first teachers were members of the community, but in 1853 the trustees hired their first certified teacher, James Srigbey. By 1874, the village had outgrown the log school, and a new one-room brick schoolhouse was built on a one acre lot the east side of Hwy. 27, just south of Rexdale, on land purchased from James and Ann Gardhouse for $150. The new school required 31,000 red bricks at a cost of $6.75 for 1,000, and 1,360 white bricks at a cost of $10 for 1,000, and the total cost of the building was $1,789. Mayoral candidates position themselves as replacement for Rob Ford DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Rob Ford was absent from a marathon “round table” debate for Toronto mayoral candidates Monday evening. But the spectre of Ford’s mayoralty hung over the discussion in a Toronto City Hall committee room May 26, as candidates hashed over the legacy of his last term in office – and tried to position themselves as his replacement, during his leave of absence from his job and the campaign for re-election. Over the course of three hours of the event hosted by the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada, nine candidates, including the front-running campaigns, hashed over public transit, finance, social housing – and leadership and accountability. And, because this is a mayoral debate, they took some digs at one another. Karen Stintz, who for the first time wasn’t shy about her single-digit showings in the polls, took some of her most direct shots yet at John Tory, arguing as an experienced councillor she would be better able to lead council than he.

“Mr. Tory had problems managing his own caucus,” said Stintz, referring to Tory’s leadership of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party. “I don’t know how he can manage this council.” Earlier, candidate Michael Nicula chastised Olivia Chow for leaving her seat in Trinity-Spadina to run for mayor and saddling taxpayers with a costly byelection. In both cases, moderator Tony Ruprecht shut the criticism down, enforcing a good-behaviour rule. That didn’t apply to discussion of

Rob Ford, however, as candidates were asked to assess the popularity and continued presence of the incumbent in the race, after a year of extraordinary scandal in the mayor’s office. Tory said Ford should simply resign now, and stay out of the race. “But I can say there are no remedies, other than to see that the rules are followed,” Tory said. Stintz, meanwhile, said what she termed Ford’s early-term successes would probably have led to

his re-election, were it not for the scandal. “It’s important to remember why Rob Ford got elected – because we had a seven-year NDP administration, and a lengthy garbage strike,” she said, calling the first two years of his term, contracting out garbage and cutting some taxes, a success. “There’s no question the last two years have been nothing but a distraction ... but if he hadn’t got himself into the trouble he had gotten into, Rob Ford would have got elected. In spite of the bigotry and lying.” Stintz also defended her own support of Ford in those early years. “I share the successes that Rob has, but I don’t share the misogynistic bigotry he also has,” she said. Nicula, who promised to freeze property taxes and eliminate the land transfer tax, while governing by online referendum, took it a step further. “I am the new Rob Ford,” he said. “Better educated, more competent, thinner. But I share his main ideas. He was elected because of a sound clip: stop the gravy train. I will do that.” David Soknacki, meanwhile, said he believes Ford is no longer

relevant. “I will say that with the exception of this question, we have moved on from the nightmare of the last four years,” he said. “I see the question as one of hope, because we are moving forward, we are exorcising that ghost.” Chow avoided Ford’s scandals, but argued he had few successes. “We are tired of Mr. Ford’s scandals but also his worn-out promises,” she said. “It’s important if we’re making promises that we say how we’re going to pay for it.” Other candidates also had their say. Eighteen-year-old Morgan Baskin said she was running “not as a joke” but because she believed that youth weren’t represented otherwise. “I would not be here if youth were included in the conversation,” she said. “I would be supporting another candidate. I’m not here as a joke. I’m here because youth issues need to be included.” Also at the table were Women’s Post publisher Sarah Thomson, entertainer Dewitt Lee and entrepreneur and mountain-climber Erwin Sniedzins.

THE RIDING OF Etobicoke North is known as a mulitcultural hub in the city’s west end. The latest Statistics Canada data from 2011 show its population as 111,343 with 10,705 Punjabi-speaking homes, 5,080 Gujarati-speaking and 4,415 Spanish-speaking homes. The riding has been Liberal red for the last three terms. Incumbent Dr. Shafiq Qaadri is hoping to enter into a fourth term come June 12. In the 2011, 2007 and 2003 provincial elections, Qaadri handily beat out his closest contender - all from the Progressive Conservative (PC) party. The riding was once held by PC John Hastings. He represented the riding from 1995 to 2003.

NDP

CANDIDATES ■ Investments in transit infrastructure need to be province-wide, transparent and accountable. The Liberals have talked about how much they are going to spend, but they still have not explained how they are going to pay for it. The NDP supports fair corporate income taxes to fund the transit infrastructure that we need. Empty Liberal promises have not given us a frequent Finch bus nor efficient, rapid transit on the routes that Etobicoke residents use every day.

■ I grew up in North Etobicoke and am a school teacher in Rexdale. I’m a leader on educational and social justice issues and a member of the Rexdale Resident Advisory Council. My community service has been recognized by the 2011 Urban Hero Awards among other awards. I hold an undergraduate degree from York University and a Masters from OISE, University of Toronto. In 2000, I coached the Rexdale Women’s soccer team to a bronze nationally.

■ Our youth need spaces that they can use all year round. Our fully-costed plan will invest $60 million per year to keep schools open. We will help school boards cover the cost of keeping schools open after hours. School boards will be directed, where feasible, to make affordable space available to not-for-profit groups like childcare groups, charitable groups, sports and recreation groups and community groups like Pathways to Education, Albion Boys and Girls Club, SOYAT, Breaking the Cycle, etc.

■ Jobs are priority number one in Etobicoke North and across Ontario. It’s where everything begins. The Ontario PCs, under the leadership of Tim Hudak, have a solid and do-able plan to create a million jobs over eight years, with a primary focus on getting young people filling the persistent demand in the skilled trades, and replacing corporate welfare with a 30 per cent tax reduction on job creators to help them create even more jobs.

■ First of all, we will put the province in charge of all rail-based transit and major highways in the GTA. Our plan will finally give subway riders room to breathe with a new east-west express line connecting Toronto’s downtown with Etobicoke in the west and Scarborough in the east. And we will do this without raising taxes. We will also expand major highways and GO Transit. Our action plan will produce 96,000 jobs and get the GTA moving again.

■ I have over 30 years of leadership, project management, and consulting experience. I’ve worked for Bell Canada for nearly four decades, both locally and internationally. I’m a member of the Thistletown Ratepayers Association. I attended York University in Toronto for Business Administration and Industrial Engineering. I’m a resident of Etobicoke North for 34 years, and appreciate the riding’s diversity and believe it is home to some of the hardest working people in Ontario.

■ Under the leadership of Tim Hudak we will open up skilled trades opportunities for youth by changing the journeyman-apprenticeship ratio from 5:1 to 1:1, and abolish the restrictive Ontario College of Trades, another unnecessary bureaucracy created by the Liberals. We will also raise education targets – especially in math - and introduce Ontario’s first test of science achievement, in Grade 8.

■ Healthcare. We’re funding a $200 million expansion of Etobicoke General Hospital, and creating the nearby $1 billion Humber River Regional Hospital. As a physician, I first got involved in politics to preserve, protect and defend our healthcare system. As MPP, I will continue to ensure each Ontarian has access to timely, quality healthcare. Strengthening our local health network, including the Rexdale Community Health Centre and its satellites, are issues that I champion.

■ We announced the Moving Ontario Forward plan to build a seamless and integrated transportation network across the province which includes, Crosstown LRT from Etobicoke to Scarborough; Union Station to Pearson airport direct rail link; two-way, all day, every 15-minute GO train service. Investing in transit makes sense; it creates jobs, growth and keeps the recovery of our economy moving forward. It’s $29 billion for transit projects over the next 10 years

■ I have had the privilege and honour of serving as the voice of Etobicoke North residents in the legislature since 2003. I have served in the Ministries of Children and Youth Services, Health Promotion and Government Services. I also serve as the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Justice Policy. They tell me I’m one of the strongest trained debaters in the Ontario Legislature – the better to let them know what my residents need.

■ The Ontario Liberal Party has introduced the Youth Jobs Strategy. That strategy secures $295 million over two years which equates to 30,000 jobs for youth. Since launching in September it has created over 11,000 jobs for young people. Also, the OLP has created the 30 per cent tuition grant to help students fund post-secondary education. The Ontario Liberal Party will continue investing in our young people, giving them a firm footing in the job market.

■ As MPP for Etobicoke North I would champion the need to create super projects that include sports and recreation facilities, mass transit, cycling and pedestrian promotion, and affordable housing. Our riding is fortunate to have many resources available to us such as the airport and two future Metrolinx projects however, this is not shown in the jobs and careers our residents are looking for.

■ Improve transit time by completing the Finch LRT and expanded GO service. The Green Party of Manitoba promotes a fare-free Public Transportation. My personal belief is the provincial run mass transit system should be fare-free or at least low cost.

■ Born in Kamloops, British Columbia. I’m an Aboriginal Canadian from the meeting of the two rivers ‘Tk’ mlúps’. Raised in East Vancouver known as “Canada’s poorest postal code” I moved to Toronto with a position at Tumivut Youth Shelter, then Native Canadian Centre. I’m currently employed at Woodbine for the last eight years.

■ The best opportunities for youth are low cost/free sports and tutoring programs. Better implementation of breakfast and lunch programs in our schools and using early childhood centres as neighbour houses. When I was a child in East Vancouver we paid under a dollar for a breakfast program in our “neighbour houses”.

Home opener Post season pursuits falter for Etobicoke players and teams The Etobicoke Eagles will host their Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) home openers against the Hamilton Ironmen this Saturday, May 31 at Father Henry Carr CSS, 1760 Martin Grove Rd. Malcolm Subban wrapped up his first professional hockey season with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League, saddled with the official 5-4 loss in the seventh and deciding game of a second-round series against the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins on May 21. Subban, however, only allowed one goal on 12 shots. His team was done in by an onslaught to start the second period by the Penguins in which they scored five times before the period was eight minutes old.

Subban relieved the starter after the first four goals, allowing one more, before shutting the door and paving the way for the furious Bruin comeback that just fell short. In six post season games (either complete games or substantial minutes) he finished with a 2.96 goalsagainst-average (GAA) with a save percentage of .888. In 33 regular season games (either complete games or substantial minutes) he finished with a 2.31 GAA and a .920 save percentage, good enough

for fifth place. Subban is native of Rexdale and the brother of Montreal Canadiens star defenceman P.K. Subban.

The Etobicoke-based Toronto Lakeshore Patriots’ torrid playoff run finally ran out of steam at the RBC Cup – the national Jr. A championships which ran May 10 to 18 in Vernon, British Columbia. oronto soccer fans are getting ready to wave their flags next month when the World Cup of soccer begins in Brazil. Being one the of most diverse cities in the world means that when the World Cup takes place every four years, there is no shortage of fans cheering for the 32 teams taking part in the tournament. And this year will be no exception. The World Cup kicks off on June 12 with a game between host Brazil and Croatia in Sao Paulo. Scarborough’s Josie Tanga is of Italian descent and she is already looking forward to this year’s World Cup, in which Italy will be making its 14th straight appearance. “It’s great,” said Tanga of the World Cup and its importance to Toronto’s huge Italian-Canadian population.

We support them no matter what.” Tanga said family and friends often gather at her home to watch the games when Italy is playing. “We have family and friends over and we get all dressed up for the game; wearing the bracelets and the hats,” she said. “Everyone gets very excited.” Of course, food is a big part of the celebration when it comes to watching the World Cup for Toronto’s fans supporting the countries taking part. “We make rice balls and pizza,” said Tanga. After enjoying the game in the relative calm of the home environment, Tanga said heading out to celebrate on Corso Italia, in the St. Clair and Lansdowne area, is also usually on the agenda providing Italy wins the match.

He pointed out that Greek fans did not have a lot to cheer about in the 2010 World Cup during which their team went winless in their three preliminary round games, and were eliminated. However, Greece did advance to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Euro. Given his background of playing soccer and his Greek heritage, Kouzoukas said he finds it interesting how everyone in Toronto becomes a soccer expert once the World Cup begins. “When the World Cup comes, everyone is watching and everyone has an opinion. Country’s top scoring junior player is Etobicoke’s athlete of the month for May

His dream came true when he was eligible in the NHL 2012 Draft and received a phone call from Brian Burke telling him that he had been drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs (sixth round, 156th overall). Brown just finished up an outstanding season in which he was the leading scorer in the country among all three of the major junior leagues (Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and

Western Hockey League) with 128 points (45 goals, 83 assists) in 68 games and was a plus-44. He also picked up the Red Tilson Trophy as the Most Outstanding Player of the Year as voted on by the writers and broadcasters that cover the league. While Brown pursues his dream

of playing in the NHL, he will never forget his roots of where he learned to play the great game of hockey on the outdoor rink in his own backyard. “I congratulate Connor and I am so proud of his success in hockey and the humble gentleman he has become. I have watched him play hockey since he started and knew that he was a gifted athlete,” says Joanne Noble, Chair of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. “It comes as no surprise that Connor is going to the show (the NHL). He has a great attitude along with excellent work ethics and I certainly hope that one day Connor will be inducted for his greatness into our Hall of Fame.”

Connor Brown has come a long way from the days where he learned to play hockey on the backyard rink his dad would build each winter for him and his brother Jeff. Brown first started playing hockey with the West Mall Lightning where he became part of a phenomenal cohort of players that would go on to excel throughout their tripleA youth hockey careers with the Toronto Marlboros. Brown played a year with the St. Michael’s Buzzers of the Ontario Junior A league before joining the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League where he has played for the last three seasons (including captain for the last two seasons).
