TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The Salvation Army Etobicoke Temple may look like Roman ruins. But the Christian charity and church remains open for business. In fact, the temple is further deepening its community conscience with the construction of a nearly $6 million facility to better serve the north Etobicoke community. The future 22,000-square-foot building at its existing 2152 Kipling Ave. address will include: a desperately needed, large, communityaccessible gymnasium, classroom, meeting rooms, as well as a moreprivate food bank, sanctuary and fellowship hall. The gymnasium will be offered to community groups free-of-charge, Major Kathryn Trim said in an interview last Friday. “We very much have a community vision for the building. It won’t just serve the congregation. We plan to serve the community. Our dream, our vision is to have teenagers use the gymnasium for structured programming. We won’t charge them for it.” Trim and her husband, Major Kester Trim, took over leadership of the Salvation Army Temple in Rexdale in July. The couple had spent five years in regional leadership of the Salvation Army in Quebec.
