Police officers working around the clock to get offender ‘off the street’ TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Toronto police Sex Crimes Unit is investigating a number of sex assaults that occurred in the early hours Tuesday in south-central Etobicoke. Insp. Gerry Cashman of 22 Division reported a man broke into six homes between midnight and 5 a.m. on Sept. 18. A man sexually assaulted some women in their homes. The women’s ages vary from “young to old”. Thefts occurred in some homes. “We want him off the street as quickly as possible,” Cashman told reporters. “We consider him to be a very, very serious offender. We want him off the street.” Cashman urged the man to contact a lawyer and turn himself in
to police. The sex assaults and break-ins happened in the area bounded by Bloor Street West, Islington Avenue, The Queensway and the Humber River. A mom in an area park on Wednesday said residents are on high alert following the incidents. “You can tell everyone’s on alert. You start questioning everything,” said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous. “And your neighbours that live alone, you start looking out for them. Neighbours really come together, there’s so many people with little kids and elderly people who live alone. Developer discusses future plans for Mimico-By-The-Lake TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Longo Development principals shared new concept plans — but didn’t talk heights — at a community consultation meeting last week about its multi-tower condo proposal in Mimico. The 20-plus to 40-storey heights of its six, now reduced to five, proposed condominiums, and the
future of tenants in 396 existing onsite rental apartments, has stirred concern among some in Mimico since Longo filed its development application in April 2011. Mimico Residents Association hosted the meeting at Mimico Presbyterian Church last Wednesday night attended by approximately 70 residents who heard Longo responses to more than 50 questions about its proposed project.

“We haven’t shown (proposed condo buildings’) heights tonight. We’re still working that through,” Craig Hunter, Longo’s planning consultant told residents. “We’ve certainly heard the original density was too much at 1.8-million square feet and buildings at 40 storeys. We’re trying to limit it down to three to four (buildings), instead of six... The plan will not include the number four,” meaning condos @ETGuardian
would not reach 40 storeys. Hunter responded with a flat “no” when asked if condos of eights to 12 storeys would be “acceptable and profitable”. Longo expects to file an amended Official Plan application and a rezoning application to city planners by early October. Meanwhile, city planners are at work writing a Secondary Plan for the entire Mimico-By-The-Lake

Etobicoke teen hopes to land role of Dorothy in Over the Rainbow Live competition TV series airs every Sunday TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke teen Jessie Munro is quite literally Over the Rainbow. Last Sunday, Munro, 18, performed on CBC Television’s new live competition series, Over the Rainbow, and made it through the results’ show with the support of Canadians’ votes on Monday night. Munro and fellow Etobicoke School of the Arts’ musical theatre student Malindi Ayienga, 16, were chosen in July among the top 20 finalists after a Canada-wide audition tour for a shot at the show. Last month, Munro was chosen among 10 top finalists following a week spent singing, dancing and acting — “it’s really a boot camp for musical theatre” — at Dorothy’s Farm north of Toronto with the 19 other finalists after a Canada-wide audition tour. Now the top 10 finalists will perform on Over the Rainbow live each week as they vie for the role of Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Canadian production of The Wizard of Oz opening at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in downtown Toronto this December. “It’s incredible,” Munro said of her shot at the iconic role made famous in the 1939 feature film The Wizard of Oz starring a then 16-year-old Judy Garland. “I never thought this kind of thing would ever happen. I’ve been singing in my room in front of a mirror

Walk supports humane society The Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) will host a dog walk-a-thon and pet fest this weekend to raise money for its new shelter, which now houses dogs and cats. “With our recent move to a fullservice, rented shelter, we are calling on our community to help us raise funds that are needed now more than ever,” Pia Lauretti, president of EHS, said in a statement. “Children, adults, students and the elderly have all been huge supporters and we hope this event brings them together
for our great cause.” Pooches & Pledges will take place on Saturday at West Deane Park South (on Martin Grove Road, south of Eglinton Avenue) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will run rain or shine. We’re looking for a wild, organic Dorothy,” Lloyd Webber said during the show’s premiere on Sunday. “She needs to be able to do it all: sing, dance, perform. She’ll be on stage for all but a few minutes.” Munro acknowledged before the show’s premiere she didn’t know how she’d prepare for her big moment. “I don’t know how I’ll prepare. I know after I perform a song once, I know what I can do differently. This experience only comes once in a lifetime. I’ll be trying to keep calm, stay under control. At the same time, it’s so exciting to be performing live on television in front of a live audience. It’s so overwhelming.” During the series, the girls are living together at an undisclosed location. Munro and three other girls, all high school students, are being tutored. “ We’re lucky we have one another,” she said of the Over the Rainbow finalists. “We look to each other when we have a need. We’re making friends we’ll have forever because of this experience. And we’ll likely work together in the future.” The opportunity to play Dorothy hasn’t changed her, Munro said. Rather, it has made her grow. “There’s me as a performer and there’s me as Jessie,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve changed. I think I’ve grown. Being organic, being yourself is so important in this industry. This experience has helped me grow as a person. It’s important to stay genuine to who you are. I’m proud of myself that I’ve been able to do that.”

And even the police have noticed an upswing in the number of misdials coming from them. Now police are turning to the city’s youth to create an effective campaign to combat the problem. Toronto residents aged 10 to 24 are invited to create a video or poster educating others on when to call 911 and how to avoid pocket dials, which clog up the emergency line. “All the entries will be judged and we will select one to be the public service announcement for the Toronto Police Service,” Const. Wendy Drummond said. Winners will also be awarded a prize. Back to school; back to transit talk for Toronto N
ot only are students across Toronto back in school, but all the politicians who represent the city – municipally, provincially, and federally – are packing their fancy new lunch boxes and pressing their clothes to get back to business. And there is one issue that should speak loudest for Torontonians – transit. And not just public transit, but cars, bicycles, and every other way we get around the city. The very nature of public transit is one where individual neighbourhoods and geographies can’t be individually satisfied, but our view necessitates working toward a common vision and plan. In these pages, we have called Province for a national transit strategy taking over – not just ad hoc funding that bends with the wind. We have called for the provincial govern- TTC first step ment to take back running the Toronto Transit Commission, alleviating the strain on municipal coffers. And to that end, we’ve called on everyone who sits on city council to stop arguing about a transit vision and commit to one so Toronto can be the world-class city it can be. All you have to do is travel the streets and highways of Toronto to see how busy they have become since school has started up again. The summer, a respite for many, has come to an end and the crowds of students – from primary to university – are now on the streets, and with them come many parents in their vehicles. Summer vacations are over so those Torontonians (and to greater extent Ontarians as a whole) are also back on the streets, highways and public transit slowing everything down. With these increased volumes, everyone across the city should keep up the pressure on all levels of government to treat the transit issue as more than just a one-off discussion. Getting from one end of the city to the other has become noticeably difficult – downright impossible some times, and that’s without adding the recent difficulties when the Gardiner Expressway is closed for the weekend, the Toronto International Film Festival bringing more people into the city core, and various festivals shutting down streets. It’s easy for politicians to lose track of the transit issue when dealing with their individual portfolios and concerns, but if we hope to one day have a solid transit solution for such a large and growing city, we must keep their political feet to the fire and make sure the topic never disappears from their radars. To the editor: I think it’s great the way Toronto honours our fallen police and fire department staff, but I find we do not come close when it is a TTC, roads crew, waste or similar department staff that dies in the line of duty. I know these other occupations are not as high profile, but at times can be equally hazardous. The families of a fallen waste department worker feel the loss as much as a fire department’s family. So let’s honour every fallen civic employee. Their contributions to Toronto are what built this city and keep it running. Dave Barnes
TCH report stands chance of success
W
ith all the gridiron drama unfolding in Mayor Rob Ford’s life, it’s often easy to forget that the City of Toronto has a life beyond the mayor’s, and often beyond the mayor’s reach. On Monday, Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão provided evidence of that when she unveiled the long-awaited report into dealing with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s (TCHC) daunting backlog of repairs and maintenance. The report, titled Putting People First, is something of a repudiation of one of Mayor Ford’s early triumphs this term, when he led the wholesale gutting of the TCHC board of directors and put ally and former councillor Case Ootes in place as a oneperson board. As a councillor under former mayors Mel Lastman and David Miller, Ootes had been a sharp critic of the TCHC’s stock of more than 600 single-family homes. His view had been if Toronto Community Housing’s apartments and townhouses were crumbling, the

city shouldn’t be putting up tenants in large, comfortable and sometimes quite valuable pieces of real estate in some of the city’s nicest neighbourhoods. With Mayor Ford’s support, Ootes made the case once more as the singular board of the TCHC, and before he handed over control to the newly-appointed board, set the wheels in motion for a sell-off of that housing — in the course of it, potentially displacing subsidized tenants across the city. When it came to council earlier this year, councillors balked — and in a compromise set up the task force and put Bailão in charge of finding other ways to raise the $751 million needed to erase the housing company’s backlog. The new plan is much more modest. It would sell off at least 55 houses, and no more
than 155 homes (with up to 100 going to tenants themselves) and look elsewhere for the money for the repair. Those tenants that would be displaced in the much more modest sell-off would be relocated to other city-owned homes in their home neighbourhood, minimizing displacement. The housing company would otherwise look to remortgaging, bond-funding and simple efficiencies to dig into the repair backlog. Really, inasmuch as it might fit with his world view, all of this is tangential to the mayor’s agenda. In making the appointment of Ootes to run the housing company, Ford really gave an old ally an opportunity to eradicate one of his pet peeves while on council.
The solution that came forward — essentially a one-time influx of an insufficient amount of cash, coupled with the removal of stock that might be seen as a little too fancy for the sorts of people who end up in affordable housing — was something council as a whole couldn’t stomach. Bailão’s report, focussing as it does on the well-being of even those tenants lucky enough to live in The Beach, stands a better chance. That always seems to be the big question,” Kyra Trainor, Mimico Residents Association president said at the meeting. However, only four of 34 questions posed to Hunter and Longo Development president Dino Longo concerned density and heights. Many more questions centred around the displacement of tenants and replacement of the site’s existing rental units. “We’re going to keep all rental housing as we’ve always committed in two buildings of about nine storeys each at a midrise scale to accommodate all 396 units existing on site,” Hunter said. Approximately 10 per cent of units would be three bedrooms, 20 to 25 per cent would be two bedrooms and the balance would be one
bedrooms and perhaps studio or bachelor apartments, Hunter said. Longo assured one particularly upset tenant that a process under the 1:1 city rental replacement policy dictates the replacement of rental buildings and relocation of tenants. “There is a separate application process. We’ll try to accommodate tenants on site, but I’m sure some may have to be relocated,” Longo said. “We’ll meet all the city and provincial policies for tenant relocation and a financial assistance package. The city itself will start its own process to engage tenants.” Rents could increase in the new buildings, but only so much, Longo explained. “The rents in place will be submitted to the city as starting points for rents for existing tenants who want to come back (to the new buildings). Any escalation (of rents) would be within city and provincial policy. For example, if you pay $850 today and you
move back after two years, the guidelines for rent increases would apply. “But you’ll be given compensation to be relocated. You won’t be thrown out onto the street and made to rent a truck.” Hunter unveiled a landscape concept drawing that showed the 2521-2543 Lake Shore Blvd. W. site’s existing 396 rental units relocated into two new buildings fronting Lake Shore. Behind them, a heritage estate and gardens will be preserved. Walkways between buildings would be 30 metres, “pretty generous for taller buildings,” Hunter said. A new street is planned to connect the Lake Shore to the lakefront on the west side of the development. Tenants and condo owners’ parking would be underground. Currently, there is no timetable for when construction would commence, Longo said.

The two men killed in an earlymorning shooting Tuesday did not live in Jamestown. Po l i c e re s p o n d e d t o 911 calls reporting gunfire around 1:20 a.m. on Sept. 18 in behind townhouses in the John Garland Boulevard and Jamestown Crescent area. Police identified the men as Suleiman Ali, 26, of Toronto and Warsame Ali, 26, of Vaughan. The men are not related. The suspect is described as male, black, 5’10”. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie. He fled the scene on foot. The men’s murders shattered what had been a quiet summer free of shootings not only in Jamestown, but throughout north Etobicoke, including in areas with a history of violent crime incidents. News of the killings rocked the townhouse neighbourhood. The community,
adjacent to Greenholme Junior Middle School, had been peaceful since Toronto police’s 23 Division launched its Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) on June 1. Until Tuesday morning, there had been no reported incidents of shootings anywhere in north Etobicoke for months. “Initially, you think it’s a tragic event. You’re certainly sad for the family and friend who suffered the loss,” said Staff Sgt. Kim Scanlan, who heads 23 Division’s TAVIS initiative. “I feel that way for the community, too. These people really care about their community. “We want residents to know we haven’t gone anywhere. We’re still here. We’ve been there. We weren’t there at 1:20 Tuesday morning. But we’re still there day-in, day-out.” All summer, Scanlan’s TAVIS and auxillary officers have hosted “Neighbours Night Out at the Park” on
Wednesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. at Masseygrove Park just north of Jamestown and at Highfield Park at Stevenson and Silverstone drives, where they play soccer with area children. Soccer continued Wednesday night in the wake of the double homicide in Jamestown. Some news media misreported details of the killings and the general safety of Jamestown, Scanlan said. “I’m often out and about in the community after my shift in plainclothes. I’ve eaten at restaurants, shopped at stores. I’ve never had a problem. Check to ensure their homes’ doors, windows and garages are locked. Check on their neighbours’ safety. Report any suspicious activity, or any evidence of a break-in, to police immediately. “The message I would
get out to the public is, ‘Be cognizant of their homes. Be aware of their house. Check their windows at night to make sure they’re locked. Make sure their garage is locked. Keep a phone by the bed.’ “We’re not trying to create panic here. We just want to ensure people are safe.” One nanny said Wednesday she now feels unsafe walking alone in the neighbourhood. “We’re trying to make sure the doors are always locked, and keep the lights on. Exercises for people with arthritis Arthritis can make physical activity more difficult. In spite of that difficulty, exercise is an important part of staying healthy for men and women with arthritis. Even moderate physical activity can strengthen bones and muscles and
increase joint flexibility, making it easier for arthritis sufferers to perform daily tasks. Men and women with arthritis should commit to regular exercise that includes three types of activities: flexibility exercises, strengthening exercises
and cardiovascular exercises. Consult a physician before beginning any exercise regimen, and discuss any limitations your specific condition might place on your physical abilities. Such limitations might diminish as your exercise regimen progresses, but it's important to exercise within those limitations at the onset to avoid injuries. It's also important to consult your physician should you experience a flare-up of arthritis before, during or after exercise. Such flare-ups might require you to alter your routine, and your physician can help with such alterations.
Flexibility exercises: Perform flexibility exercises every day, as they will protect your joints by reducing injury risk. Flexibility exercises, which are often referred to as range-of-motion exercises, help your body warm up for more strenuous exercise. Once you're comfortable doing at least 15 continuous minutes of flexibility exercises, you're likely ready to add strengthening and cardiovascular exer-
cises to your routine. Many people with arthritis find yoga is an especially effective flexibility exercise, as it strengthens and relaxes stiff muscles and even aids in weight-loss efforts. Just don't push yourself too hard when starting out with yoga, as the exercises are more difficult than they might seem.
Strengthening exercises: Strong muscles reduce stress on the joints, something that's especially helpful to arthritis sufferers. Strengthening exercises, also known as resistance exercises, build the body's muscles so they're more capable of absorbing shock and more effective at preventing injury to the joints. When performing strengthening exercises, you will use weight or resistance to make the muscles work harder and grow stronger.Isometric strengthening exercises tighten the muscles without moving the joints, while isotonic strengthening exercises strengthen the muscles by moving the joints. The Arthritis Foundation recommends performing strengthening ex-
ercises every other day and always in conjunction with flexibility exercises, which can be performed before and after strengthening exercises.
Cardiovascular exercises: Walking, dancing, swimming and bicycling are examples of cardiovascular, or aerobic, exercises, which many people find the most enjoyable way to exercise. Cardiovascular exercises make the heart, lungs, blood vessels and muscles work more efficiently while improving endurance and strengthening bones. Initially, cardiovascular exercises might be difficult for arthritis sufferers who have not exercised in a while. However, you can gradually build toward 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three to four times per week, and you will notice your endurance improves the more you commit and stick to your routine. Include cardiovascular exercises as part of your larger routine, performing some type of aerobic exercise after strengthening exercises.

What’s next after retirement? Scores of people spend their working days dreaming of the moment they are eligible for retirement. They may have retirement counted down to the minutes and seconds, particularly if they’ve been in a job that hasn’t been the most enjoyable. But many people find that once they retire they do not know what to do to fill their time. Boredom actually may be a side effect of retirement, and some people actually want to go back to work. Much of the focus when planning for retirement concerns finances. All other factors take a backseat. Therefore, there may be emotional issues that arise during retirement, and retirees are not always prepared to deal with such issues. Having a post-retirement plan in place can mean the difference between happiness and having a hard time adjusting, according to experts. Here are some tips that can help anyone ease into the golden years. Establish goals: After working for years, the idea of setting goals can seem counterintuitive. But goals can give life direction and have you looking forward to things in the future. Goals also motivate retirees to get up in the morning now that a commute to work isn’t part of the daily schedule. Donate time or money: Giving back to others, whether to the community or to a charitable organization, can feel good and give retirees some
structure. Volunteering your time at a place can give life some sort of purpose outside of a job. Start a home-based business: Just because you retire doesn’t mean you have to fully retire. Now may be the opportunity to start a business venture you have always dreamed about, whether that is something hands-on or just serving as a consultant. Try new things: Part of goal-setting is to add things to the list you’ve never done before, which can boost feelings of excitement. You may discover a new interest that becomes a passion. Now that you have time to explore new hobbies, they might prove more rewarding. Meet with people: Part of what makes work fulfilling is the opportunity to get out of the house and interact with others who are not members of your family. It’s easy to fall into a rut when you are not being mentally stimulated by conversation from different people. Realize it’s alright not to love retirement: Just because the grass seemed greener in someone else’s yard, doesn’t mean it always turns out to be that way. It is OK to accept that maybe retirement isn’t entirely what you expected and to make changes that can enable the experience to be better.

FIRST LOOK: CHEVROLET MALIBU 2013 In Canada, the mid-size segment represents 20 per cent of the market and the Malibu is again expected to appeal mainly to families and fleet customers.
The familiar bow tie badge on the front grille leaves no doubt the new-look Malibu is a Chevrolet. Base engine in the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will be an Ecotec 2.5-litre DOHC four cylinder, making 197 hp and 191 lb/ft of torque.
The 2013 Malibu has a much-improved interior look from the outgoing model. GM has ramped up the use of soft-touch materials and produced a more premium look to the cabin. A look at the back seat area of 2013 Honda Accord reveals room for three adults.
The redesigned 2013 Malibu has a totally new rear fascia with what GM calls Camaroinspired tail lamps. Regular Malibus will have 463 litres of cargo space in the trunk, but the ECO version like this one will have less space due to the lithium-ion battery pack in the trunk area behind the back seat.

n 411 ON THE MALIBU: For 2013, the Malibu will come with a four-cylinder strategy only. The base engine is an all-new Ecotec 2.5-litre four-cylinder. A turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder will be a late arrival this fall. As with the outgoing model, the new Malibu is based on the same Epsilon II platform as the LaCrosse. This is the most aerodynamic Chevy mid-size ever with a coefficient of drag of 0.29. The new look gives the car a more planted, sporty stance with 16, 17, 18 or 19-inch wheels available, depending upon the trim level. There’s no doubt it’s a Chevrolet with the signature dual port grille with Chevy bow-tie insignia, while the rear fascia and taillamps are Camaro-inspired, according to General Motors. This is the quietest Malibu ever, thanks in part to an enhanced body structure with a 20 per cent improvement in rear torsional stiffness over the current Malibu. GM packs a lot into the 2013 Malibu with 10 standard airbags, like the Cruze, and available lane departure/forward collision warning and rear camera systems. The car has more cargo volume than before with 463 litres of trunk space, up 34 litres from 2012. There’s also improved front and rear shoulder and hip room with 110 litres of increased interior space. The cabin of the Malibu features
the signature wrap-around dual cockpit design, again with a Camaroinspired gauge cluster. The cabin is much improved with a decidedly more upscale look including the use of much more soft touch materials. Suspension is MacPherson struts up front with a multi-link setup in the rear. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard as is a six-speed automatic transmission. A choice of 16, 17, 18 and 19-inch wheels is available depending upon the trim. Trim levels available in Canada are the LS ($24,995), 1LT ($25,325) 1LT ECO ($27, 940), 2LT ($27,915) 2LT ECO ($29,160) and LTZ ($32,540). GM says this is the most fuelefficient Malibu ever with “hybridlike fuel efficiency for non-hybrid like price.� The eAssist has an air-cooled lithium-ion battery that will provide up to 15 hp of electric power. The system also has regenerative braking, start stop technology and an active shutter system in the lower grille to aid engine efficiency. Four underbody panels also add to aerodynamics. All this adds up to fuel consumption ratings of 8.1 city/ 5.3 hwy/ 6.9 combined. All in all, the Malibu is a nice ride and should be a solid contender in what is becoming an even more competitive segment. The all-new 2013 Santa Fe has improved in nearly every way. It also now comes in two body styles. The five-passenger ‘Sport’ is on sale now with FWD or AWD, and is available with two engines: a 2.4-litre four cylinder with gasoline direct injection (GDI), and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four, also with GDI. All Sport models get a six-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual shift. The seven-passenger, long-wheelbase version is simply named the Santa Fe, and will replace the Veracruz sometime during in early 2013. Our group of journalists had an opportunity to drive the Sport, and I’ll admit that I didn’t expect something quite so refined. This starts with the exterior. Incremental changes in the grille, headlights, taillights, roofline, belt line, character lines and other areas combine for an effect that is significantly more upscale. Like the Tucson, it employs
Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ styling. Along the sides are character lines that pierce each door handle, along with sculpting that provides dimension and depth. This seamlessly flows into the protruding wheel arches, which house standard-equipped 17-inch Euroflange alloy wheels. The front end with hexagonal front grille is flanked by modern swept-back projector headlamps and black-accented fog lamps. The two-tone lower fascia projects a rugged, SUV appearance. For 2013, the Santa Fe is longer and lower, and has more interior space. Along with an increase in capacity is a cut in weight. This new model is 120 kg lighter than the 2012 (and 16 per cent stiffer), much of this due to a greater use of high-tensile steel. more insulation in the dash and floor, add up to a cabin that’s surprisingly hushed. The base, at $26,499, offers a healthy list of standard amenities. The Santa Fe 2.4-litre FWD includes air conditioning, heated front seats, power windows with driver’s auto up/down and pinch protection, tilt/telescopic steering with audio and cruise controls, power lumbar support, Bluetooth and six-speaker AM/FM/XM/CD/ MP3 audio system with iPod/USB/ aux inputs. This entry model also gets a rear spoiler, roof-rack side rails and the previously mentioned 17-inch alloys. Next in line, with the 2.4-litre engine, is the Premium FWD ($28,299), followed by Premium AWD ($30,299) and Luxury AWD ($33,899). The base turbo model comes in Premium trim, which will set you back $30,499 for FWD or $32,499 for AWD. There’s much more to be said
about the all-new Santa Fe, and I hope to do a longer test – probably once the snow flies. Hyundai believes this is their most important new vehicle launch since the Elantra, and I would agree. Demand for this kind of vehicle shows no sign of slowing down, and the company points out that 21 per cent of new vehicle buyers are intending to purchase a CUV. And I’ll bet a lot of them will be putting the 2013 Santa Fe on their shopping list.

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.
What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

Toronto Blue Bins to get more packed this fall
Several new items approved for recycling
Toronto residents’ Blue Bins will be more packed with several more items being approved for recycling. The new items include most food-related containers and packaging, and some common household items, such as: • clamshell containers (hinged, clear plastic containers used for food items such as berries and takeout) • clear fruit and vegetable containers • clear takeout food containers • molded bakery item trays • plastic plates and glasses • egg cartons • cold beverage cups/ lids • and compact disc cases (empty) Chief among the plastic items still not being recycled include plastic takeout containers with black bottoms or tops (such as used for roasted chicken) along with toys, blister packs, cassettes, CDs, DVDs, plastic over-wrap on pop/water cartons, toilet paper and paper towels. They should still be added to the garbage bin. The city says it can now handle the new items, thanks to new developments spearheaded by the Canadian grocer y retail industr y, along with advancements in recycling and sorting technology.
SUCCESSFUL PILOT PROJECT
The city successfully completed a year-long pilot project at its Dufferin recycling station, which currently handles about half of the city’s Blue Bins. By next May when the city’s new recyling processing contractor, Canada Fibers, begins operating its new recycling facility, all of Toronto’s recyclables will be processed in state-of-theart sorting facilities that can sort and prepare these new, mixed rigid-plastic items for end-use markets. “This is good news for Toronto. Accepting this range of items in recycling will mean fewer materials going into the garbage and ending up in landfill,” said Councillor Denzil MinnanWong (Ward 34 Don Valley East), Chair of the public works and infrastructure c o m m i t t e e, i n a p re s s release. The city has tagged the price of collecting and recycling the new plastic materi-
