Excitement echoed throughout Toys "R" Us at Sherway Gardens early Wednesday morning.

Buses transported 26 surprised St. Paul Catholic School students to the Etobicoke toy store Dec. 21 before opening for an early Christmas present.

Students from the Queen and Parliament streets area school got a chance to meet Toronto Raptors’ all-star Kyle Lowry - who gifted the six- to 13year-olds with a frenzied 10-minute shopping spree.

Students chose whichever toys they wished from dolls to trucks, books to Lego - during their mad dash up and down the store aisles.

Ayahna Lowry, Kyle’s wife, and Raptor, the Toronto team’s mascot, also got in on the action.

Lowry’s holiday assist program is run by his Lowry Love Foundation.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet.

The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.”

But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly!

It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.”

Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies.

And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.”

Four themes from 2014: leadership, transportation, diversity and intergovernmental relations DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com In December of 2014, John Tory sat down with Metroland Media Toronto at the end of a long and hard-fought campaign to become amalgamated Toronto’s fourth mayor, to talk about four themes that emerged from the race between himself, former Councillor Doug Ford and former MP Olivia Chow.

Those themes emerged from a compilation of promises, debates and issues that emerged: broadly speaking, they were leadership (on repairing Toronto Council and the divided city); diversity (building a city where no one’s left behind); intergovernmental relations (on becoming Toronto’s chief salesperson and head shamer); and transportation (on becoming unstuck).

Just over two years later, we sat down again in a year-end interview with Mayor Tory - coincidentally half-way through his term - to check in and see how he’s done.

Leadership: Since the election, Tory claims a measure of success in both dealing with rifts on Toronto Council and the city in which a sizeable portion of the electorate rejected him in favour of a more divisive campaign from first Rob and then Doug Ford.

On a divided Council, Tory said: "I would say (I did) as well as one could.

We’re not dealing with a

high school debating society, we’re dealing with people with different ideologies, different views, often depending on where’ they’re from. It’s a challenge to bring consensus but if you look at the votes where I’ve obtained well over 30, I think that’s indication of a certain degree of consensus building."

And on the stickier matter of a divided city: in 2014, Tory said that the best way to deal with the alienation of the so-called Ford Nation group of voters was to "get results on things bothering people." In 2016, Tory maintained that he and his council "are making progress at satisfying everybody’s concerns. If you look at those concerns, they’re the same things I ran for office on: traffic; housing; taxes. Those things were all irritants."

Diversity: The first half of Tory’s term has been a rough ride on diversity matters - from run-ins with Black Lives Matter, to the confusion of the issues surrounding police spot-checks and carding of black youth to a disproportionate degree.

"I think (we’ve taken) steps to put regulations in place to address how street checks are done (are encouraging)," Tory said. "As usual, the proof of the pudding is going to be in the eating. And when we implement those regulations in the New Year, that will determine how well we’ve done."

Tory said that dealing with Toronto’s inherent diversity - in 2016, BBC Radio released a study showing Toronto was the most diverse city in the world - will be a continuing challenge.

Transportation (Getting Unstuck): Two years into his mandate, Tory is navigating a rhetorical crisis. Dec. 20,

he told reporters that "the war on the car" is over as he introduced his new transportation director, Seattle transportation planner Barbara Gray.

It’s been a bit of a problem, however - as Tory has also been heard supporting controversial bike lanes on Bloor Street and road safety measures that seem to give primacy to road users other than automobile drivers.

Tory maintained that he is offering a balanced approach to transportation he noted with some relish that he’s been sharply criticized by the left for supporting the elevated Gardiner.

Denise Harris’ column History Corner is celebrating its third anniversary and we’d like to acknowledge it as one of the best regular features to ever grace our newspaper’s pages. Featuring interesting stories, facts and photographs about Etobicoke’s past and its founding peoples, History Corner has succeeded in engaging and entertaining readers since its start.

Denise shares some of her regular feedback with the newsroom and it’s wonderful to see people’s words of We believe it’s encouragement and thanks for her efforts. One faithful important to stop reader says she always and reflect on looks up locations on Google maps, another goes our past and the even farther by visiting stories of the many of the places featured. Another reader who people who built grew up in Alderwood but now lives in Victoria, B.C. the city we live in enjoys the pieces so much he has friends send him the today. articles out west. Some stories have sparked childhood memories, and in one reader’s case, memories of dating her husband and frequenting Bert’s Turkey Palace on Richview Side Road.

It takes a lot of time and research to write each column, as Denise notes in today’s article, and Guardian staff are just as appreciative of her efforts to bring that history back to life for our readers.

We’re hoping to make history a permanent feature in our news coverage and soon will be announcing the assignment of a Toronto history reporter. We believe it’s important to stop and reflect on our past and the stories of the people who built the city we live in today. We also believe it’s important to keep on top of heritage news and efforts to preserve that past.

Reasons for hope in a hub without a name In a community hub without a name, in a part of Toronto most of us ignore, there are reasons for hope.

And that hope, so far, is coming from young women and girls.

Each started work on an idea to help York SouthWeston, their neighbourhood, and one of the city’s most passed-over places.

Ubah Idle started #SaveOurSomaliYouth in February, after the city’s Somali community received a double blow: two 17-year-old boys - Saed Kaylie and Sharmarke Farah - killed in incidents days apart.

Idle then realized "there was little to no conversation about issues within our community," because, she said, the older generation believes Somalis should hide their faults rather

Riley Peterson, a student at Vaughan Road Academy, formed a group to get girls at Charles Webster Junior Public School ready for high school. She went to Webster herself, and saw it did not have an after-school program for girls.

Peterson created a place where they could "get to know each other and trust each other."

She brings them guest speakers. York South-Weston is isolated; the rest of the city "doesn’t really know us," she said, and girls who do well in the community tend to leave. Peterson believes more need to come back to York South-Weston.

Other inspiring ideas for the neighbourhood are off the ground too. No doubt

there will be more after January, when what FYI calls the Youth-led Initiative Network (also open to boys and young men) starts meeting monthly in the building, and comparing notes.

It could add up to something big for York SouthWeston.

The recently-created hub, which houses FYI and other nonprofit agencies beside George Harvey Collegiate on Keele, doesn’t have a single sign yet announcing what it is. It should.

Every Sunday throughout the winter, the Toronto Winter Swimming Club dips into Lake Ontario’s icy depths at Humber Bay Park West in Etobicoke.

Yaro Polowianiuk, 53, is a decade-long club member after taking part in an annual charitable New Year’s Day polar bear dip at Oakville’s Coronation Park.

"I like the way I feel after swimming. I feel energetic," Polowianiuk said, clearly passionate about cold water. "I’m much healthier than I used to be."

The club is world-renowned.

Club member Alla Kibzoun brought home a bronze medal from the 2012 Winter Swimming World Championships held that January in Jurmala, Latvia.

Watching a video of a 2015 club swim on its website, www.winterswim.ca, brings chills. The sky and the lake are a cold bluegrey. Canadian geese, white swans and ducks swim in the frigid waters, unaffected by the swimmers standing a few feet away at the water’s edge.

"There’s a very steady, nasty wind from the lake.

It’s a very cold feeling," Polowianiuk said. "You go completely red, almost like a lobster. The first time I jump in, it’s very short; in and out. I go back to the shore and do 20 to 25 pushups. Then I’m ready for another shot when I stay in longer."

People’s tolerance of cold-water swimming varies widely. Still, none of them wear wetsuits.

"Some people go in only once, in and out. Other people go in and stay. One guy, a former firefighter, he can stay there for a long time.

It’s very individual," Polowianiuk said.

Dec. 18, warning of -20 C with the wind chill, deterred the avid swimmers.

Getting undressed down to swimsuits is the greatest challenge, Polowianiuk said.

"Your mind is screaming, ’It’s so cold. Don’t do it,’" he said. "But when you rush into the water, it comes with deep rewards.

You don’t feel the cold. You feel adrenaline. You feel good."

Polowianiuk said the frigid dips aid his work as a massage therapist.

"I noticed those aches and pains I had in my wrists, joints and back from my job all disappeared when I started swimming," he said.

When massage clients come in with a cold or flu, he doesn’t get it, he added.

"There is no chance I will get it. It’s like water off a duck’s back," he said. "I haven’t had a cold since I started swimming. I don’t take any flu shots. There’s no reason to get it."

Dr. Greg Wells is a University of Toronto assistant professor of kinesiology and physical fitness who works as a faculty member at the university’s human physiology lab.

The scientific jury is out, Wells said, on whether cold-water exposure correlates to disease resistance.

In fact, there is little scientific research generally on the health risks and benefits of cold-water swimming, Wells said.

One of Wells’ grad students specifically studied the effect of cold-water immersion on inflammation.

"We found at the right temperature, for the right duration, cold water reduces inflammation," Wells said. "In an acute case, like a sprained ankle, you put ice on it and it can relieve pain. But inflammation is necessary for healing. It’s a fine balance."

Winter swimming isn’t for everyone.

Wells said he asks anyone eager to try it if they have any serious health issues.

"Whether we know it’s beneficial or not, it’s dangerous," Wells said. "With the potential benefits come extreme risks. You need to take that into account when deciding whether or not to try it.

"If you’re sick or have chronic disease, jumping into very, very cold water is

a very, very bad idea."

A 2004 Finnish study published in the International Journal of Circumpolar Health concluded winter swimming improves general well-being.

Tension, fatigue, memory and negative mood states in cold-water swimmers "significantly decreased" with the duration of the swimming period, the study reported.

"After four months, the swimmers felt themselves to be more energetic, active and brisk than the controls (people not in the study)," the study indicated, mirroring Polowianiuk’s experience.

Further, the study stated all swimmers who suffered from rheumatism, fibromyalgia or asthma reported that winter swim-

ming had relieved their pain.

Those findings would not be news to the Toronto club. Most of its members hail from Russia, where cold-water swimming is a "very common way of life," said Polowianiuk, a Belarusian from Poland.

Polowianiuk loathed the winter, but now he revels in its plummeting temperatures.

"I used to think ’winter time is a drag. It’s too cold. I can’t take it,’" he recalled.

"Now, I like it. I think, ’Oh, this coming Sunday it’s going to be minus-whatever temperature. Perfect. Perfect.’

"Winter swimming totally changed my perspective. I love it. I think, ’Why did I miss having this in my life for so long?’"

when the tone of the Trump administration and its followers is so relentlessly racist and nativist, it becomes a very big question indeed.

The potential arising from those last two questions is a particular nail-biter for Torontonians, as Canada’s largest city, and perhaps the world’s most diverse.

One might think that Toronto can insulate itself from these dark turns. We have in the past.

But not always. In 1933, the rise to power of Hitler’s Nazis in Germany was felt in Toronto, when local Nazi sympathizers brought swastikas and anti-Semitism to a baseball game at the Christie Pits’ Willowvale Park playground. It ended in what is now known as the Christie Pits Riot - a dark and defining moment in the world’s and our history both.

And that is the final question as the year ends. Are we in for more of the same?

In 2017, we mark the 150th anniversary of our country’s Confederation and celebrate its natural beauty, cultural and regional diversity, unique past and bright future.

Throughout our history, local newspapers have played a major role in documenting the moments that helped define our communities and our country - events that brought us joy, sorrow, humility and pride. To continue the tradition and celebrate this milestone, our publications have put together a variety of articles to share with readers, which we will publish from January to June.

It was in December 2013 that Grace Peacock, Managing Editor of the Etobicoke Guardian, asked if I would be willing to write a bi-weekly column for them on Etobicoke History. I was a bit nervous at the prospect, but also excited to have this opportunity to share the history of Etobicoke with all of you.

My first Guardian column appeared on December 26, 2013, so you are now reading my third anniversary column! Looking back, I wouldn’t have missed this opportunity for the world. I hear from readers after every column is published, giving me much appreciated feedback, sharing their own stories, suggesting topics, and asking questions.

Friends ask why I would take on this extra work since I’m "retired." But you see, doing historical research is not work - it’s a passion, a labour if love if you will. As my two daughters revel in telling me, I’m a full fledged "history nerd." When I’m on the trail of an historical fact, I turn into a history detective - a rather tenacious one.

Each column starts with choosing an old photograph and the story flows from there. I try to cover all parts of Etobicoke, although there are more photos available of some areas than others. My primary photo source is the collection at Montgomery’s Inn. The photo I chose for this column is from there and it’s one of my favourites - in fact I use it as my screen saver. I love the clouds that dominate the scene and the unusual backyard view of Dundas Street.

My goal is to verify every fact whenever possible, which adds to the time but I believe this to be an absolute necessity.

Writing "History Corner" has put me in touch with so many wonderful and generous people, and I’ve learned so much from them. After a column on Octavius Hicks of Humber Bay, I received an e-mail from his great grandson, John Hicks. John and I have since exchanged dozens of e-mails, and he has sent me at least 75 photographs, multiple newspaper clippings, and family stories that I have been able to use.

A few other examples.

Nelson Moody has sent me family photographs and his memories of growing up in the Highfield area of

Etobicoke. I used the information to write a column on Highfield’s school. I recently received new photographs of the Dixon family from descendant Judy Perry, and new photos of the village of Claireville from Dave Rowntree who grew up there. These photos will be invaluable for future columns.

My greatest satisfaction is knowing that the column is being read and appreciated. Thank you for reading it and thanks to those who have written to me. I’ll keep writing the column if you promise to keep reading it!

About 20 student members of Father John Redmond’s Kiwanis Key Club spent Wednesday morning at Ken Cox Community Centre wrapping gifts for 24 Syrian refugee families from across the GTA. "We reached out to parishes across the city who had welcomed newly-arrived refugee families through the Archdiocese’s

Project Hope (campaign)," organizer Susan LongoSantia explained in an email to The Etobicoke Guardian.

"This Christmas we adopted 24 families across the GTA for our gift drive.

Each homeroom was paired with another and collected funds for one family each."

Father John Redmond’s gift baskets contained indi-

vidual gifts, treats and gift cards for each member of the sponsored family, as well as a $100 grocery gift card toward a festive holiday dinner.

Teens finish Youth In Policing Initiative fall program ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Sixty teens from across the city have finished a 17week paid internship with the Toronto Police Service.

Mayor John Tory and Deputy police Chief Michael Federico congratulated the youth during a graduation ceremony at the Toronto Police College on Birmingham Street in Etobicoke on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

The teens, ages 15 to 18, were assigned to various di-

visions and the mounted unit to gain job experience and life skills as part of the Youth In Policing Initiative’s (YIPI) fall program.

YIPI, a partnership between the police and the provincial Ministry of Children and Youth Services, was established in 2006.

"It’s been a fantastic success," police Chief Mark Saunders said in an interview. "It’s to develop stronger relationships with the members of the community, especially our neighbourhood improvement areas."

Some YIPI graduates are now working in law enforcement in Toronto and other jurisdictions, the chief said.

"The men and women (of the police service) learn a lot too. It really does break down a lot of layers of misconception, and it really does bring us closer to community," Saunders said.

"When you are face-to-face with somebody and you are actually speaking and learning from one another, it’s a lot harder to hate at the end of the day."
