Who knew love could be found on a bus?

DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Six weeks might seem like a small window of opportunity, but it was just enough time for TTC bus driver Peter Idzik to find the love of his life.

The 30-year-old High Park area resident was on a six-week stint driving the 112 West Mall bus in Etobi-

coke at the tail end of summer in 2015 when it happened.

The first morning Etobicoke’s Alex Day, 26, boarded his bus, he had missed her stop by about 100 feet.

But she wasn’t mad when she caught up and got on.

The next day, he missed her stop again.

"She just smiled at me," Idzik recalled.

The third day, it happened again, and Idzik thought he was going to get an earful.

"She just gave me the nicest smile you can imagine," Idzik said. "That’s why I liked her. She just had a good heart about it."

For Day, who was getting on at about 7 a.m. on her way to work, it was just too early to be angry, and

she was happy to get on the bus.

"I had bus drivers blow by and not stop. I was grateful he did stop," she said.

That third missed stop also got the two talking, which became a regular occurrence for them.

One day, Day wasn’t taking the bus, and Idzik stopped the bus at the stop expecting her to hop on -

but she never came.

"I was waiting there for her, but she wasn’t coming, so I drove off. When I got to the last stop, a lady comes up to me and says, ’I hope you get her number,’" Idzik said.

He did and that October they started dating. By July 2016, the pair was engaged and are now planning their wedding this summer.

"I never thought this could happen. After this, I’m a big believer in fate," Idzik said.

"I definitely didn’t expect to meet anyone on the bus, let alone the driver," Day added.

Since the pair met, Idzik returned to driving route 112 just one more time; but, by that time, the two were already engaged.

Lawyer Judith Wahl shared that advice Monday, as well as insights from her nearly four-decade career, 32 years of it as executive director of downtown Toronto-based Advocacy Centre for the Elderly, Canada’s first legal clinic for the elderly.

"It can happen to any one of us," Wahl told approximately 100 women during her Stop the Violence elder abuse talk at a Canadian Federation of University Women Etobicoke Valentine’s breakfast in support of Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter in Etobicoke.

"Be informed. Ask questions. Don’t hesitate to ask, ’why?’ Bring issues to people who can affect change, like management in a care home. If something doesn’t sound right or feel right, take the time to think about it, and ask questions."

During Wahl’s ACE tenure, the community legal clinic for low-income seniors across Ontario has taken on cases, including: l Denial of government pension benefits or services l Poor care in longterm care homes or other

A woman called to ask about her power of attorney, which her son had promptly used to take all her money, and flee the province. "’I don’t want to collect the money from him. He’s

going to inherit from me, eventually,’" Wahl recalled the woman saying. "’It’s my son. I don’t want him to have problems with the police.’ It was more important to her to keep her relationship with him. Anybody can be a victim of elder abuse."

Like many of ACE’s clients, Wahl said, the woman did not want to proceed to court.

"People do a risk/benefit analysis and determine they have too much to lose," Wahl said.

Wahl urged people considering a power of attorney to give it only to someone they can trust.

"If you can’t trust the person you’re naming, why

do a power of attorney at all?" she said. "If you do, review it every year. Think about whether your son or daughter will still do a good job. Sometimes, sons or daughters have gotten into financial difficulties, and they see mom’s nest egg."

Elder abuse is defined as misuse of power and authority, Wahl said.

"Most elder abuse is by family members," Wahl added.

ACE deals with all forms of elder abuse, including sexual, physical and financial, Wahl said.

In Ontario, there is a mandatory legislative requirement for long-term care and retirement home staff to report any abuse re-

lated to poor care or financial abuse.

However, there is also voluntary reporting under Substitute Decision Maker legislation, which enables anyone to report their concerns about loved ones to the Ontario Public Guardian Trustee.

"The trustee has a duty to investigate allegations of a person who is incapable and at risk of serious harm," Wahl said.

CFUW Etobicoke and Ernestine’s have a "longterm partnership," said Kathleen O’Gorman, Ernestine’s manager of engagement and development.

"The women here are passionate about change,

about the cause. It means a lot to us, and to our ability to understand the violence has to be interrupted. It takes a community, and community efforts, to interrupt the violence."

CFUW Etobicoke was established in 1952 with 10 members. Today, it has approximately 300 members, hosts speakers at its monthly meetings, and offers 44 interest groups.

The club supports Ernestine’s, Women’s Habitat shelter, Daily Bread Food bank, and other local agencies.

"We heard increasingly about older women seeking shelter. We always think of young women and children.

We felt the need to explore this," said Gail Rutherford, CFUW Etobicoke past president.

CFUW Etobicoke also offers annual bursaries to the University of Toronto, York University, Ryerson University and the University of Guelph-Humber.

Minister of Seniors Affairs Dipika Damerla said she wants ageism to be a focus of her new ministry.

This year, there will be more Canadians over age 65 than children younger than 15 for the first time in Ontario and in Canada, the minister noted.

"There is an entire cohort of seniors living very healthy, vibrant lives," Damerla said. "The one thing I’m hearing from seniors is - ’what retirement? This is our second act. This is our third act.’ There’s a desire to continue to live lives full of dreams and goals, maybe different dreams and different goals now that they may not be chained to a 9 to 5 job."

Black History Month offers window into Canada’s past Toronto was the first municipality in Canada to proclaim February as Black History Month; a month dedicated to commemorating the contributions of AfricanCanadians to our culture and community. That was 38 years ago.

It was because of the diligent pressure and persistence of the Ontario Black History Society which succeeded in having the city formally recognize the month and now it’s proclaimed right across the country.

Black History Month is, frankly, Canadian History Month and it’s important we know the compelling facts of our heritage. African-Canadians have struggled for equal opportunity and freedom from discrimination for far too many years. It began with the anti-slavery movement and evolved into the fight for basic civil and human rights. African-Canadian leaders of that time led with courage and determination. They include people like Viola Davis Desmond, a Halifax-born business woman. It was 1946 when she went to the movies in New Glasgow, N.S. while her vehicle was being repaired. She bought a ticket and sat on the main floor - not realizing this theatre had segregated seating. She refused to leave when staff demanded she go to the balcony. She was dragged out by police and spent the night in jail. She was fined $20 and charged and eventually convicted with defrauding the government of one cent - the tax difference between the balcony and main floor seat. Her challenge of the tax evasion charge brought national and international attention and raised awareness of racial segregation in Canada. Desmond was posthumously pardoned in 2010 and next year, she will be the first African-Canadian and first woman, aside from the Queen, to appear on a Canadian bank note.

Others led with their entrepreneurial spirit. Carrie Best was the first African-Canadian to own and publish a newspaper.

Elijah McCoy invented and patented a type of lubricating cup that dripped oil onto moving parts of a train while in motion. He also invented and patented the first portable ironing board at his wife’s request.

African-Canadians have roots which date back to the 1600s. They were soldiers, farmers, writers, newspaper publishers, activists, engineers, athletes, politicians and performers. It’s our wish that future generations will know the history of African-Canadians just as well as any other group or historical event in our country’s timeline.

Let’s educate ourselves about the contributions African-Canadians have made to our society - for the better.

Bylaw makes faith groups feel unwelcome When Toronto City Hall’s rotunda filled up last week with the supporters of a Scarborough mosque, people who were watching shrugged.

The protest was meant to disrupt a city council meeting, but didn’t. Mayor John Tory was away. The leader of Sakinah Community Centre spoke to some reporters, saying the mayor and city were trying to drive Muslims out of Toronto.

Soon enough, everyone went home. But that won’t be the end of it.

Just as homes in the city are becoming more unaffordable for families, faith groups, especially those supported by newcomers, are feeling squeezed out too.

What brought Sakinah supporters downtown was desperation. The city shut

nah’s imam, Said Rageah, was talking about is economic. He’s arguing the city knows faith groups like his can’t triple their budget to get buildings with commercial zoning.

"By banning our places of worship and schools you are telling us to live elsewhere.

We will not," he says in a letter to Tory.

"This will not end. This is a human rights issue."

Sakinah established itself around the time the bylaw took effect, and disagrees with city officials about what happened. Its leadership may have made a big mistake, but after renovating the building, it must fight for it.

In the inner suburbs, Sakinah’s choices aren’t unique, and this problem will worsen as more faith

groups come into conflict with the city.

Tory says the city will work with the Toronto Real Estate Board "to ensure that other religious groups are informed of where they can legally operate."

But reminding real estate agents of their professional standards is not the same as solving the problem.

A city which welcomes diversity and protects religious groups must do more for them besides explaining they now need to find much more expensive properties to call home.

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A special speaker series recently launched by Ukrainian Canadian Social Services aims to help local seniors live life to the fullest.

Initiated in October, the Living With Dignity workshops tackle a wide range of topics specific to seniors from psychological health, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, to legal and financial advice and estate planning tips, to sessions about the various government programs and services available to the elderly.

Ann Semotiuk, president of the Toronto branch of Ukrainian Canadian Social Services, said the impetus behind the Living With Dignity project is to ensure seniors live at "the highest level of quality possible, in the best health physically, mentally and financially."

"There are so many people in the community who

are aging, but many are not aware of the services available to them until they really need something. It’s usually a crisis that precipitates them needing to look into it and, at that point, it becomes a very stressful time for them," Semotiuk said.

"So we thought, instead of waiting for a crisis, why not educate people ahead of time. Education is always the best way to help people because the more you know, the better prepared you can be, and the better you’re able to cope with things."

With funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ukrainian Canadian Social Services has so far hosted six of the 10 Living With Dignity workshops they have planned so far each one featuring special expert speakers who have drawn an average turnout of 40 to 50 people per session at different venues across the Greater Toronto Area.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. Black History Month helps fill in the gaps History still perceived through ’Eurocentric lens’

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Growing up, Neysa Pryce recalls learning about European and Canadian history in school, while attempts at preserving and celebrating black history were "futile."

"All I took away from those lessons involved Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad (which are undoubtedly important), but little did I know there was so much more that wasn’t being told," the Toronto resident, who is of Trinidadian and Jamaican descent, said in an email. "I enjoyed learning about all kinds of history as a kid. But it would have been much more inspiring to learn about black cultural heritage as well."

This year marks 21 years Black History Month has officially been recognized in Canada, though it has been unofficially recognized for many more.

Throughout the month of February, Black History Month will be celebrated through discussions and presentations highlighting significant contributions made by black people.

And though it’s been more than two decades since their stories have been officially told, Pryce feels a lot has yet to be revealed, making Black History Month all the more important.

"I think we still have a long way to go," she said.

"In many ways we still live in a society that idealizes nonethnic peoples and perceives or views things through a Eurocentric lens."

Not only is learning about black history impor-

tant from an educational standpoint, but also for youth beyond the classroom, Pryce said.

"This is crucial for positive role-modelling and developing strong self-identities and hopefully more well-rounded, educated, and confident black youth who feel they, too, have something of value to contribute to society," she said. "All people need to learn to associate positivity and optimism with black culture that involves the contributions of black people to the arts, science, technology, religion and philosophy. This, I think, will help to foster an atmosphere of mutual tolerance and respect of people from all backgrounds that can extend beyond the classroom."

For Clark, getting the message out about black history isn’t saved for one month of the year; it’s a 365-day effort, she said.

"We could not go about our day without the contributions of a black person," she said, noting the electric traffic signal was invented by African-American Garrett Morgan.

Carl James, professor of the faculty of education and Jean Augustine chair in education, community and diaspora at York University, said supplementary programs such as Black History Month, Asian Her-

itage Month, and Aboriginal History Month "tells us something is wrong with the way Canadian history is taught.

"What’s missing is the telling of Canadian history where all people are a part of it," he said.

Righting the wrong could start with revising the way Canadian history is taught in the classroom, James said.

"We could look at school programs, we could look at cultural celebrations," he said. "When all these people are included in the main Canadian narrative, to me that’s the first step.

Until that happens, programs like Black History Month are needed as supplementary programs to address what’s missing.

Look at Viola Desmond. A number of Canadians didn’t know about her existence. They had never heard of her. It’s an indication of the value of Black History Month."

The TTC’s largest union is undergoing a civil war of sorts.

Just last week Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) ejected much of the senior leadership of local shop 113, which represents the vast majority of TTC workers.

The list of the ousted includes longtime 113 president Bob Kinnear, who the ATU accuses as the main orchestrator of an effort to split the local from its parent. Kinnear counters the Washington D.C.-based ATU is coercing its Canadian membership for support. He has publicly joined forces with Unifor in an effort to convince his many remaining supporters at 113 to break ranks with their American masters and join the Canadian labour giant instead (full disclosure: the Metroland Media Toronto newsroom is affiliated with Unifor).

Of course, little of this inter-labour strife will register with the transit-taking public, if at all, so long as the

Neither will it matter all too much, at least publicly, to TTC management, which has largely refrained from commenting on the situation. And to their credit, both ATU and Unifor have pledged not to disrupt service while the dispute plays out.

This is a pivotal year for both 113 and the TTC. Spot drug testing of TTC employees is likely to commence in a matter of months. At the end of the year, the TTC will launch a new customer service process once the Spadina extension opens, which

will see station collectors removed from their booths and dispatched throughout the station. In between, the TTC will launch the first phase of Automatic Train Control (ATC) - the main reason for all those weekend-long subway closures - which will see trains piloted via computer, albeit overseen by a single, human operator.

Taken together with the overall trend of declining influence of the labour movement, it’s not hard to see a steady unravelling of the union’s strength. For transit riders facing annual fare increases in part to cover the costs of generous employee wages, this might not be such a bad thing. Regardless of which faction wins out, they’ll have to deal with a much-changed landscape for labour rights.

Farmers brought their best to Etobicoke’s agricultural fairs Well-known Islington pioneers among regular prize winners DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca In April 1855, the Agricultural Society of Etobicoke held its first fair in the Village of Mimico (renamed "Islington" in 1860.)

It was held in a large tent erected on the property of innkeeper Thomas Smith on the southwest corner of Dundas and Islington.

Here neighbours competed good-naturedly against one another for the best horses, cattle, sheep, apples, butter, pickles, bread, pies, crochet work, lace, quilts, and so much more.

Prizes were awarded at a dinner held at Smith’s Golden Lion Inn that evening. Attendees came not

only from Etobicoke, but also from Toronto, Yorkville, Brampton, Vaughan, Cooksville, York Township, York, King, and Toronto Township (Mississauga.)This was an era when Etobicoke’s economy was based on agriculture, with about 60 per cent of the land under cultivation. By 1878, that number would increase to 90 per cent. The Home District Agricultural Society had been formed in 1830 to assist farmers in importing better quality seed and purebred livestock. They promoted annual fairs so farmers could exhibit their produce, compete for prizes, and share knowledge.

Over time, most townships had their own societies and held annual fairs. Names of well-known Islington pioneers are easy to find in newspaper lists of prizewinners: Edward Musson, 1st (£12) for his excellent field of turnips; Samuel Wood, 1st, for a pair of feather-legged Bantams;

and John Moore, 1st (£1) for 10 yards flannel and 1st (£1) for a Pair of socks, Canadian wool."

Records show that between 1855 and 1872 Etobicoke’s fairs were held on the Islington area properties of Thomas Smith, Donald McFarlane, and Benjamin Johnston, and once in Thistletown on Henry John Boulton’s farm. In 1872, the fair was moved to a large open area rented from Thomas Montgomery where the playing field behind Islington Junior Middle School is located today. That same year, local builder David L. Streight erected a single storey frame building 12 M by 15 M (40 ft by 50 ft) with a tower and flagstaff to be used as an Agricultural Hall. Perhaps it also had a lot of glass windows as local residents dubbed it the "Crystal Palace" after the original Crystal Palace erected in London, England in 1855. For awhile, Etobicoke called its fair "Donnybrook

Fair" after one of the same name founded in Dublin under a patent granted by King John of England in 1204. The last fair held in Islington was in 1885, and from then until 1907, the Agricultural Society of Etobicoke did not sponsor any fairs. In 1907 they entered a partnership with the Weston and York Township Agricultural Society, and joint fairs were held with them annually until 1927. These fairs were located in Weston where permanent buildings had been built on the site of the former Weston Woolen Mill. The Agricultural Society of North York joined them in 1927, but there is no trace of any Etobicoke Township fairs after that date.

Former school building in midst of demolition CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com As the former Kipling Grove school building is razed, a proposal for the new residential community that could replace it will soon be raised at Etobicoke York Community Council (EYCC).

Minto Group Inc., which purchased the nearly sixacre site at 19 Glen Agar Dr. from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) back in August 2014, has submitted a proposal for 53 threestorey, single-detached dwellings on two new public streets on the site - an application city planner Travis Skelton said will likely come before westend councillors at their Feb. 22 EYCC meeting.

That proposal represents a significant downsize in units and density to Minto’s original application for the site, which initially requested zoning bylaw amendments to permit 104 townhouses, plus a dozen single-detached dwellings on the lands. Etobicoke Centre Councillor Stephen Holyday said credit for the scale-down is twofold.

"One, it’s about market conditions - I think the Glen Agar neighbourhood is one that could very easily sell the large, premiumpriced single-detached homes that Minto wants to build here," said Holyday of

the homes, which will range from 3,000 to 3,500 sq. ft. on 30-foot lots.

The second - and perhaps more noteworthy - acknowledgement, Holyday added, goes to the members of the Glen Agar Residents Association (GARA), a 300member-strong group of local residents who banded together in October 2014 specifically in reaction to the TDSB’s sale of Kipling Grove to Minto.

It was GARA’s "hard work" conferring with the developer that helped guide Minto to its most recent, seemingly downsized proposal - one Holyday characterized as "a step in the right direction." "(GARA) has had a very sophisticated discussion about what their needs and concerns were with the proposal, and that allowed Minto to enter into a conversation with them," Holyday said. "And that, I think, is what sets them apart from other files where there’s been sort of a deep community opposition, but not the associated conversation with it."

Pedro Lopes, Minto’s development manager, confirmed that many of the changes made since the original proposal did indeed come about due to input from the GARA community.

"We submitted a plan at the time that we thought was appropriate, but we’ve worked with the community - we’ve been listening to the community, we’ve been listening to their concerns, and through that discussion, through that back-

For its part, GARA President Ken Copeman said the association’s ninemember executive is still cautiously optimistic about Minto’s most recent submission.

"We haven’t seen the complete plan yet, but from our perspective, it looks like this proposal is more

used to take up residence in the chimneys at Kipling Grove - were addressed when Minto agreed to a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry requirement to build a new habitat for the migrational birds before their anticipated return this spring.

Meanwhile, Holyday lauded Minto for working with GARA before demolition work began to ensure trucking schedules didn’t interfere with local school children’s before- and after-school movement through the area.

"Provided it was done in a careful way, (the demolition of Kipling Grove) was not necessarily a bad thing, because there were some security concerns expressed by the community," he said, noting reports

of doors and windows being broken at the vacant school building.

"GARA worked with Minto to have a plan and a schedule in place and, by and large, they’ve been working in that envelope and it’s made it easier on the community, I think."

While the old school’s demolition work is just a week or two from completion, Holyday said plans for its new replacement community still have a few hurdles to clear before proceeding to construction.

"The story isn’t over, because we’ve still got an approval to consider," Holyday said, "but all things are headed in the right direction and I’m optimistic that it will be something that will integrate well with our community."
