LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Anne Robinson, 55, is eagerly anticipating her double hip-replacement surgery later this

month after living in “excruciating pain” since 2013. “I’m so thrilled. I can’t wait. It truly is a miracle,” she said. Robinson’s road to surgery has been long, frustrating and emotionally and financially taxing. Diagnosed with osteoarthritis

three years ago, Robinson had first noticed pain in her knees in her 40s. In 2012 while teaching in China, Robinson felt pain in her hip during exercise “almost like it had dislodged,” she said. Then, a brain bleed forced her to fly home to East York in September

2013. An orthopedic surgeon had her hips X-rayed. The doctor’s interns said they saw nothing unusual. Robinson was told she was “too young” for surgery, and prescribed pain medication.

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com North Etobicoke social service agencies are banding together to fill the gaps left in the wake of the "shocking" bankruptcy of one of their most long-standing and reliable counterparts. After 33 years of serving women, youth and newcomers, Community MicroSkills Development Centre abruptly shut down programming Feb. 15, citing "several years of consecutive deficits" that "imperiled the agency’s financial sustainability." "MicroSkills’ board is saddened by this development and the potential negative impact this will have on our dedicated staff and over 18,000 clients served annually," reads a statement posted on the nonprofit agency’s website and taped to the

locked doors at its numerous sites in Rexdale and North York. "The board and senior staff worked all options to address financial challenges, but in the end, they were not able to find a workable solution that would be sustainable for the long term." The news of MicroSkills’ abrupt demise came as a "disturbing shock" to the Rotary clubs of Etobicoke and Toronto West, which provided $250,000 in funding towards the MicroSkills Rotary Youth Centre in September 2015. The Dixon and Islington area centre offered a litany of programs to north Etobicoke youth aged 13 to 29, among them an after-school drop-in; a physical, nutrition and wellness program; leadership and volunteer development; and a youth mental

The Microskills Rotary Youth Centre at 235 Dixon Rd. is just one of the service’s locations whose doors were locked on Feb. 15 when the community-based non-profit declared bankruptcy. health program. "It’s disappointing on several levels. Beyond the financial impact, the real thing that’s more concerning than anything else is the impact

this will have on the youth clients," said Jack Fleming, past-president of the Rotary Club of Etobicoke. "It was a safe haven for a lot of kids, so the devastation

of this is sort of on many levels." Meanwhile, at Rexdale Community Hub, news of MicroSkills’ bankruptcy sent shock waves among partner agencies such as Rexdale Community Legal Clinic, Albion Neighbourhood Services, Rexdale Community Health Centre, and Rexdale Women’s Centre. "What makes this hub have potential is we have a bunch of stable agencies that can work with each other ... You always think that the other agencies are on top of their game and that they’ll still be there next week," said Hub chair Ann McRae. "But this, this makes everybody think, ’Oh, wow, how did that go south so suddenly?’" Several of the hub’s agencies met last Thursday to try to ascertain the extent of the

bankruptcy’s impact - a task made much more difficult, McRae said, by the fact that MicroSkills’ estimated 90 staffers were immediately let go and its offices locked. "At this point, we don’t even know exactly how many programs there are, where they are, when they happen, or how many people usually showed up," McRae said on Friday. "So the other agencies are scrambling around saying, ’Well, we do basketball, we do homework club, we do English classes, but how do we add 30 or 40 kids of the wrong age and skill level to what we’re doing?’" Still, McRae said she’s confident that - in time - the gaps will be filled. "The solutions will be there, but they won’t be quick. It’s going to take weeks to sort it all out."

St. Stephen students surprised with 28 new laptops CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Excited cheers of ’Hip hip hooray!’ could be heard from the St. Stephen Catholic School gymnasium Thursday morning as a stream of representatives from Softchoice carrying 28 brand-new Lenovo laptops marched in to surprise the students. "It makes the kids very happy to see that someone cares and that people really see that they’re going to use them," Principal Kathryn Kubota said of the laptops, which were presented to St. Stephen as one of seven recipients of Softchoice and Lenovo’s joint POWER UP grant. The goal of the $10,000 technology grant is to "provide access to technology to

enhance learning for elementary and middle school students in our most disadvantaged neighbourhoods." "What we’re trying to do with POWER UP, essentially, is to give equal access to every child, because we realize they need to learn technology to be productive in the workplace," said Softchoice’s Brittany Pepper. "We also know that, once given the opportunity and given the access to technology, these kids will do amazing things." The seven grant recipients - which included just one other Canadian school, Montreal’s Riverview Elementary - were selected based on applications describing "a compelling need for technology and articulated a strong implementation plan to drive positive

learning outcomes." The application by Etobicoke’s St. Stephen, located in the Islington Avenue and Rexdale Boulevard area, was chosen from among more than 100 submitted across North America, Pepper added. "What made them stand out was the fact that the teachers, the principal and the parents are so engaged with their students," she said. Kubota said her school’s 28 new laptops will immediately be put to good use - especially among St. Stephen’s kindergarten to Grade 3 classes, who have been technology-starved. "We’re going to put them in the primary grades, because we want them working on writing, especially expository writing," she

said, noting that PowerPoint and Google Drive will be used as part of the children’s storytelling. "We’ve got to start them young to get them to learn to read and write and get them

companies follow Softchoice and Lenovo’s "wonderful" lead in supporting technology-deprived schools like St. Stephen. "I wish that corporations that are looking to ’refresh’ their technology would adopt schools and not make us scrounge for it - because we do have to scrounge for it," she said. "Our kids here, we’re disadvantaged without technology. A lot of our children come from low-income situations, so school is where they’re going to learn about technology - and if we don’t have it, that’s an injustice. So, if local businesses can commit to saying they’re going to refresh with us, that would be great." For more information, go to www.softchoice.com/powerup

Time to make case for city’s fiscal needs When Toronto Council debated its budget last week, Mayor John Tory felt like the loneliest mayor ever. At least that’s what he said, in his speech capping the daylong debate on the 2017 operating and capital budgets. "I can tell you, it’s been pretty lonely so far," Tory told his colleagues - many of whom were critical of his decision to keep the property tax increase relatively low at 2 per cent. Tory pointed out that marginally higher tax increases on Torontonians’ homes won’t make much difference to Toronto’s larger fiscal difficulties. What would make a difference, he said, was a few more voices turned toward Ottawa and Queen’s Park, to press the case that he has been pressing: Toronto needs more money, and perhaps more powers, to finance its many needs and aspirations as the largest city in Canada. It is a compelling case, and Tory has not been alone in making it. Mel Lastman, amalgamated Toronto’s first mayor, made it most bluntly, when he called Premier Mike Harris a "liar" for promising that the amalgamation of Toronto and provincial downloading of bigticket services would be "revenue neutral" for the city and the province. His method brought in a number of one-time fixes, but was largely a rearguard action. Lastman’s successor, David Miller, made the case with slightly more gentility, and did indeed manage some successes: a gas tax federally, transit infrastructure funding provincially, and, locally, new powers to tax under a new City of Toronto Act. The late former Mayor Rob Ford had little time for intergovernmental relations, but even he did his bit attracting some federal investment from the Ford-friendly Harper Conservative government to build a subway in Scarborough. So it falls on John Tory, and Toronto Council, to continue to make the case for further support and revenue powers. And if the fight is not lonely, it is uphill. Toronto Council’s initial foray - to impose tolls on the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway - went nowhere with Premier Kathleen Wynne. The mayor has shifted his demands - that the province put money into transit infrastructure, housing, maintenance of those two highways and port lands flood protection. Tory is relying on the federal government to help secure this money - specifically, that federal funding for local projects be tied to provincial cost-sharing. Will it work? In politics, that’s always up in the air. But like his successors, Tory is in the right. It should work. For Toronto’s sake, it must.

Scarborough’s subway, still so insecure They held a byelection in Scarborough this month. The subway won. You might hear a man called Neethan Shan won, but the subway got more votes. In Toronto, some people believe governments do nothing but fill bags with money, which they throw into holes in the ground. The point most candidates in Ward 42’s byelection made is Scarborough never gets its fair share from those bags. And for a fair share, think subway to Scarborough Town Centre. Sure, many wanted more than that, but Scarborough’s one-stop subway extension has grown to be what matters most.Scarborough’s councillors, MPPs, and Mayor John Tory have

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto staked so much on the subway, so many times, it just must happen. It’s become the area’s main goal. So, on the night of the byelection, Tory made it clear Shan’s victory was also the subway’s. "The voters in Ward 42 have sent a strong message that they want a councillor who supports the Scarborough subway extension," he

said, pledging "to push ahead on the project that the people of Scarborough have voted for time and time again." These are anxious months for the subway. No matter how many votes it wins, whenever Josh Matlow, a Scarborough subwayhater, goes on television, or the Toronto Star trash-talks it, the subway is insecure. A third-party cost review, long delayed, comes out this year. There’s fear in Scarborough about that. A new group, ConnectScarborough, has given out flyers at Scarborough Town Centre since January, signing people to a pro-subway petition it will give councillors when cost estimates are public. In a Valentine’s Day release, Scarborough Com-

munity Renewal Organization, born from a grassroots campaign to revitalize Scarborough on many fronts, announced its "strategic partnership" with ConnectScarborough.Pressure for the subway must continue until construction actually starts, says SCRO’s interim chairperson Jennifer McKelvie. The cost review also covers the Eglinton East lightrail line. That line can bring development and jobs back to East Scarborough, maybe break the back of poverty in five neighbourhoods. Tory promised it. ConnectScarborough and SCRO say they support it. It’s "shovel ready." But it’s not a subway. It has no chance. Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

CORE Studio hosts spin-a-thon for Sleeping Children Around the World Etobicoke charity provides bedkits to kids in developing countries CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke’s CORE Studio will be pedalling for a good cause this weekend at a spin-a-thon for Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW). "Once a year we try to do something philanthropic, and because one of our big things is indoor cycling, we decided we’d do an eight-hour spin-a-thon," Ursula Cafaro, who coowns CORE’s Advance Road studio with her sister Clair, said of the Saturday, Feb. 25 event. "We chose Sleeping Children because it’s an organization that’s

right here in the community, and also because they’re a wonderful charity that’s 100 per cent volunteer driven." Founded by the late Murray and Margaret Dryden in 1970, SCAW is an Etobicoke-based charity that has raised more than $40 million over the course of its 47-year history, providing more than 1.4 million bedkits to children in 34 developing countries. After the death of his parents, Dave Dryden - probably best known for being an NHL goalie with the New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers - took the SCAW reins. Under Dryden’s leadership, the charity has grown to distribute upwards of 70,000 of the $35 bedkits - which consist of a mat or mattress, bedding, a mosquito net, a schoolbag and school supplies, and clothing and footwear each year. And that, Dry-

,

den said, is in large part thanks to the efforts of local fundraisers like the Cafaro sisters."I get a real kick when businesses step up to do something like this," he said of CORE’s upcoming spin-a-thon. "As an organization, we count on it, and it’s so nice that there are passionate people out there who say, ’Yeah, we want to give it a shot.’" The goal of CORE’s spin-a-thon - which is expected to draw upwards of 80 cyclists - is to raise enough money to purchase 250 bedkits, which Dryden said are likely destined for Uganda, the Philippines or Sri Lanka. The eight-hour event will take place Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at CORE Studio, 14 Advance Rd.All are welcome to swing by the studio "to cheer on the riders, learn more about SCAW and donate to the cause," Cafaro said. New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Your life is a story. Tell it well.

Canadian CRISIS

Battle of Vimy Ridge The Battle of Vimy Ridge, fought April 9 to 12, 1917, was the first conflict in which all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force took part in a battle together in association with one British division. Canadian troops took the ridge, defended by three German divisions, over a four-day span, largely doing most of the damage on the first day behind a creeping barrage of artillery. Nearly 3,600 Canadians died and another 7,000 were wounded. It’s believed Vimy Ridge was truly Canada’s introduction to the world as a mature, independent nation.

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Trillium Health Partners recently opened its new, $7.4-million centre for patients with complex medical conditions at its Queensway Health Centre in Etobicoke. Patients, families, volunteers, doctors and staff designed the redeveloped, 20,000-square-foot specialized care centre with a homelike environment for 39 post-acute in-patient beds in private rooms. Patients with complex medical conditions, such as acquired brain injury or severe physical limitations after a stroke, receive care at the centre. Patients range in age from their 40s to 90s, and receive care from a few months to a number of years, said Jennifer Clifford, the centre’s clinical manager. "Beyond patients’ medical needs, we’re really fo-

cused on activities and programming," she said. "A jazz musician visits every Tuesday. There’s a therapy recreationist. There’s a knitting club, and a book club. Individual treatments are available. We’re really focused on meeting the needs of individuals." The Moir Family Centre for Complex Continuing Care is the result of a $7.4million Ministry of Health investment, and a $1-million gift from Bill Moir and his family, donated after his wife, Carol, received care at Trillium. Natural light floods every patient room, and the patient lounge, which also boasts a fireplace. The complex continuing care centre’s design focused on privacy for both patients and staff outside the faster-paced acute hospital setting, hospital officials said. Moir, former Tim Hortons’ chief marketing offi-

cer, has served Trillium through philanthropy, community engagement, and as a Trillium foundation board member for nearly a decade. Health Partners is truly committed to patients and their families," Moir said in a statement. Steve Hoscheit, Trillium Health Partners Foundation president and CEO, thanked Moir and his family for their gift. "Bill’s generosity enhances our ability to provide important support to our long-term patients and their families, in a space that feels less like a hospital and more like a home," Hoscheit said in a statement. Trillium Health Partners is one of the largest community-based acute care facilities in Canada. It is comprised of Credit Valley Hospital, the Mississauga Hospital, and the Queensway Health Centre.

Arts Etobicoke celebrates 20th anniversary of youth art show ’EDGE: Youth Art Show’ runs March 1 to 7 at Artscape Youngplace CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Arts Etobicoke is set to celebrate one of its longest running programs March 1 to 7 with the 20th anniversary EDGE: Youth Art Show at Artscape Youngplace, 180 Shaw St. While the EDGE exhibition maintains its two decade-long focus on showcasing the work of talented youth artists aged 14 to 18, the show has undergone several transformative changes over the years, said Shira Spector, Arts Etobicoke’s program and outreach manager. First of all, when the show first started two decades ago as the Student Art Show, it was geared exclusively to students from TDSB and TCDSB high schools. "Then we sort of had a transition happen. I was really interested in being more inclusive and looking at ways to include youth who may not be inside the school system, so we started to do outreach to agencies to try and open things up," Spector said, noting the corresponding change in names from Student Art Show to Youth Art Show. "I thought that was an important change to make as a reflection of the kind of work we do at Arts Etobicoke with marginalized youth." The second development was a change of venue from Etobicoke’s Sherway Gardens shopping centre to Artscape Youngplace - a 75,000-sq.-ft space "devoted to artistic inspi-

Arts Etobicoke hosts its 20th anniversary EDGE: Youth Art Show exhibition at Artscape Youthplace, 180 Shaw St., from March 1 to 7. Over the last two decades, the show has exhibited the work of nearly 2,000 talented youth artists aged 14 to 18. ration, learning, growth and expression" in the West Queen West neighbourhood. Now in its third year at Artscape Youngplace, EDGE: Youth Art Show has "really found its home" there, Spector said. "It’s a really busy hub of arts activity, so it’s a really exciting and inspiring place for the youth to show, where they’re seeing all sorts of dancers, actors and visual artists," she said. "Plus, it’s a venue that’s set up to show art, so we really get to showcase the work with proper lighting and a good amount of space. It’s really great for everybody - for the youth to have the chance to show in a professional venue, and for the public to see what these youth have to say." The one thing that hasn’t changed in the EDGE: Youth Art Show’s two-decade history, though, is the "outstanding" quality of the art it showcases. "They’re all really articulate pieces, really thoughtful pieces," Spec-

tor said of this year’s submissions, which will once again include up to 100 paintings, drawings, photographs and fibre works from youth representing close to 20 different schools and social agencies across Toronto. "Over the years we’ve seen such a variety of works from all different skill levels and all different approaches, but always really brave and always really outspoken and eclectic. And, somehow, it all always works together." Each school and agency participating in this year’s show, Spector added, will receive a scholarship to use toward their arts education department - a scholarship funded, in part, by the Kiwanis Club of Kingsway Humber, the show’s "unfaltering" longtime sponsor. The 20th anniversary EDGE: Youth Art Show will take over Artscape Youngplace’s second floor hallway gallery space from March 1 to 7 at 180 Shaw St. For more information, go to www.artsetobicoke.com

Nearby Orchard Crescent is named for the Thompson orchards DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca The story of the house at 7 Meadowcrest Rd. in Sunnylea begins in 1803 when Alexander Thompson received a grant of 200 acres (80 ha) of land in Etobicoke for his service to the British during the American Revolution. His property extended from Bloor Street south to about Leland Avenue, between Islington Avenue and Royal York Road. Alexander arrived in Upper Canada from the United States in 1792. He soon married, although his wife’s name is unknown. Initially they lived in the Town of York and their four children were born there between 1796 and 1804. Mrs. Thomp-

son died soon after 1804 and was buried on the Etobicoke property. Alexander called his farm on Lot 15 (the north half of his property) "Rose Bank" and he built a house made of stone on the south side of Bloor, about where Thompson Avenue is today. In 1805, he sold Lot 14, the southerly of his two lots. Alexander died in 1831 and was buried with his wife. In his will he left Lot 15 to his eldest child, Alexander Jr. Lot 14 passed through seven different owners. The 1852 census shows there was a frame one-and-a-half storey house on the property. In 1855 the property was purchased back into the Thompson family by Alexander Jr.’s eldest son, Archibald, who called his farm "Spring Bank." The 1861 census shows that there was now a brick two-storey house on the property. This new house was built with a hipped roof and an exterior of red brick with yellow brick quoins. A later owner

Metroland

Brick house built by Archibald Thompson ca. 1860 at what today is 7 Meadowcrest Road. This photo taken in 1954. covered the brick with stucco (which was removed during a modern restoration.) The original veranda across the front of the house was replaced around 1876 by the current Neo-classical portico with a balcony above. The house still has

its original oak front door, cherry banisters and ten foot high ceilings. Unfortunately, Archibald and his wife Mary Jefferson both died in their 30s during the 1860s. Their four children, all minors, were raised in the households of

other local Thompson family members. Their eldest son, George, lived with his grandparents, Alexander Jr. and Ellen, until title to Lot 14 was transferred to him in 1878. After Alexander Jr.’s death in 1883, Lot 15 was

transferred to his son Andrew. Together, George and his uncle Andrew focused on tree fruit farming, becoming known for the high quality of their apples, pears, plums, and cherries. A street near 7 Meadowcrest is named Orchard Crescent after the Thompson orchards. Eventually the house at 7 Meadowcrest was sold out of the Thompson family, but as late as the 1950s, there were still Thompson descendants in three houses on Thompson Avenue. Andrew’s son Edward, had a large house built at 24 Thompson ca. 1900 and the last Thompson residents living there were Edward’s two sisters, Charlotte and Elizabeth, who died in 1950 and 1951 respectively.
