Technology used as communication tool in class TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Joshua Mensa Osei concentrates as he says, "I’m fine. How are you?" He speaks. But the little boy doesn’t use his voice. Instead, his eyes select preprogrammed phrases on a screen, enabling him to communicate with his Seneca School teacher Sarah Glyn-Williams. Seated next to Joshua, Chinechelum "Chinny" Ebele uses a touch screen to say his name, talk about the weather, and play school on the iPad app, My PlayHome School in GlynWilliams’ class of six students. "Some parents said, ’I had no idea my child could do that,’" Glyn-Williams said of the technology. "It has given students a voice. It really opened my eyes to show me what they could really do. This technology has really enhanced their lives." Staff taught parents how to use the iPads at home to read stories, and to assist their children to request dinner options or to play favourite activities. Seneca students are developmentally disabled, some with autism and/or medically fragile. Each student has been identified by the Toronto District School Board’s central special education department, and has an an IEP (Individual Education Plan). Most Seneca students are nonverbal and use augmentative and alternative communication devices and technologies. This Saturday, Seneca School celebrates its 50th anniversary with an open house to the public from 2 to 5 p.m. at the 580 Rathburn Rd. school. Former Seneca staff are invited to

attend a staff reunion brunch earlier that day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Le Treport Banquet Hall, 1075 Queensway E. in Mississauga. Email senecareunion2017@gmail.com for tickets and more information. Seneca School has special education teachers, educational assistants, lunchroom supervisors, a deaf/blind intervener, and two registered nurses. School administrators also access consultative staff, including a psychoeducational consultant, a speech/language pathologist, a physiotherapist, a social worker and an occupational therapist. The school partners with SickKids, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, and Surrey Place Centre. Students participate in an adapted aquatics program, and in walks to the greenhouse at Centennial Park, the public library, a plaza and a grocery store. Yet, Seneca School is little known beyond the west Toronto parents of developmentally disabled children, many of whom return if they’ve moved away, Seneca principal Stuart Garner said. "Parents who move tend to come back for the level of support and knowledge of our staff," Garner said. "A principal of a segregated school in Denmark who visited thought our school was incredible. Denmark is known to be progressive, but he thought they’re not as progressive as we are here." Garner said technology is a crucial learning tool at the school. "We’re always looking for new ways for our kids to communicate," he said.

Joshua Mensa Osei, a student at Seneca School in Etobicoke, uses technology to communicate to his teacher Sarah Glyn-Williams. Most Seneca students are non-verbal and use augmentative and alternative communication devices to communicate. On the front: Student Chinechelum Ebele shares a moment with Glyn-Williams. The school will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend. "We want our kids to graduate with functional communication, whatever that needs to look like. Our goal is to move students from making requests to commenting." Donna Clayton has taught at Seneca School for nearly two decades. "In 17 years, it has always been challenging, and I’ve loved what I’ve done. There is always something more to learn. There is always more to give students. They’re phenomenal." Dianne Pender is Seneca School’s unofficial historian. She began, ended and spent the majority of her 34-year teaching career at Seneca. "I’ve taught children how to walk and talk, all sorts of life skills, helped children to be able to com-

Vice-principal Effie Stathopoulos worked at as a special education consultant and co-ordinator at the board and worked as Seneca’s summer VP for many years before seeking a transfer to work at the school. Teachers and administrators work to help stu-

dents reach their highest potential, she said. "I work with a group of educators who are passionate every day to ensure our students reach their highest level of independence," she said. "A child taking his or her first step is huge. We celebrate all the little things." One recent example of that independence realized - the drop-in visit of a mar-

ried couple who attended Seneca School in the 1960s. "Paula Milton and David McCrindle met in 1973 at (former) Burnhamthorpe (Collegiate) for work training. They live in a group home, and they’re still together and so in love," Stathopoulos said. "They were on a bus going to the Olympium, dropped in and we gave them a tour of the school." In 1967, the Metropolitan Toronto Association built Seneca School adjacent to Centennial Park to serve students ages seven to 21. It is believed the land was sold for $1 on a 99-year lease to create Seneca School with the understanding it would always serve children with developmental disabilities, Garner said.

Etobicoke residents rattled by the recent rise in roaring overhead planes recently received an official apology from Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) officials. Hillary Marshall, VP of Stakeholder Relations and Communications, kicked off the April 19 meeting of the GTAA’s Community Environment and Noise Advisory Committee (CENAC) by acknowledging the grievances of more than 150 attendees. "On behalf of the organization, I am truly sorry for what you are experiencing right now," she told the standing-room-only crowd of Etobicoke and Mississauga residents impacted by noise levels some described as house-shaking. The recent influx of air traffic flying over homes in Etobicoke’s Alderwood, Long Branch and Markland Wood communities, she explained, is due to the $30 million rehabilitation of "Canada’s busiest runway" Toronto Pearson Interna-

tional’s Runway 05/23. The first two phases of the project - which began March 28 and will finish May 16 - includes 200,000 square metres of asphalt resurfacing, 23,000 cubic metres of concrete excavation and replacement, and 420 kilometres of line paint markings, reported Michael Belanger, the GTAA’s director of Aviation Services. With 05/23’s east-west runway either partially or fully closed for the duration of the 46-day rehabilitation, Belanger said much of its traffic - which totals roughly 202,000 planes a year - has been, and will continue to be, diverted to other runways. Much to the chagrin of local residents, the vast majority of those diverted planes have ended up on the problematic north-south runways - which have seen a spike from their usual load of 6.9 per cent of the airport’s annual operations to a staggering 65 per cent since construction began. "And this is why, I recognize, many of you are in this room today," Belanger said, blaming weather conditions for the "operational challenges" that have necessitated higher than expected usage of those runways. "We’re going to make every effort to operate on the other runways, but for the next three weeks of construction, I think what we’ve experienced to date

will continue." That news didn’t sit well with many Etobicoke residents - including Alderwood’s Ruthmary James, who admitted she’s frightened by the loud, low-flying planes. "Last night an airplane came over top and scared the living daylights out of me," she said. More than the noise itself, however, the most common complaint was about the lack of public notice about the runway rehabilitation and its potential noise impacts. Etobicoke MPs James Maloney and Borys Wrzesnewskyj, MPP Yvan Baker and Councillor Stephen Holyday each took to the microphone to highlight the recent influx of calls their offices have received from baffled constituents. "Shouldn’t there have been advertising in the local papers? Shouldn’t have there been meetings ahead of time with the community?" Wrzesnewskyj asked, noting that his office only received notice of the runway rehabilitation on March 28 - the day construction began. "All of this speaks to the need for a cultural change at the GTAA. I think there’s a lot of trust that needs to be rebuilt. Hopefully, this terrible situation provides an opportunity to build a very different relationship with the community going forward."

EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Amalgamated Toronto remains a work in progress Twenty years ago this month, then-Ontario premier Mike Harris officially introduced the law that would erase the historic municipal borders in Metropolitan Toronto, and create the new city in which we live. To say that Bill 103 was unpopular in the six former municipalities in the 416 area code would be an understatement. When it was all settled, the Progressive Conservative government found itself persona non grata in the new Megacity that they’d built. And for decades afterwards, the residents of North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, East York, York and the old City of Toronto glared suspiciously at one another across the old borders, dreaming of better days long past. It’s not to say that the old, preamalgamation days in Toronto were entirely perfect. There were a lot of nooks and crannies for corruption to hide and flourish in all those little councils. And the relationships between some of those little councils and the larger regional Metropolitan Toronto council led to some absurd bylaws. But if corrupt dysfunction sometimes ruled the day well at least it was our corrupt dysfunction. Communities gathered around common values and a shared urban esthetic had their own accountable municipal governments. If they failed to hold them to account, well, it was on them. When amalgamation descended, that was lost in the Megacity of Toronto. It’s hard to say what’s improved for Torontonians. Amalgamation was sold as a money-saver and a way to cut the size of government. And while there were some savings identified at amalgamation, they were swallowed in the immense cost of amalgamating seven governments, and in the new cost of downloaded services like housing and transit. Amalgamation may well have aided in cleaning up local government, but it took its time. A hotbed of corruption surrounding bad computer leasing deal was uncovered in the early years of the new city, and a public inquiry led to a suite of accountability offices in place to look over councillors’ shoulders - to often good effect. But 20 years later, amalgamation remains a work in progress. We’re getting along better than we had in the beginning, but not all that well - witness the ongoing suburban/urban battles over subways in Scarborough and elevated highways downtown. We’re beginning to get a handle on municipal finance but we still can’t quite balance the cost of our needs with our capacity to raise revenue. To put it another way: Toronto may be grown, but it’s not yet grown up.

Downtown businesses offer the homeless respect In downtown Toronto, on the busiest part of Canada’s busiest street, handing out tickets to homeless people doesn’t work. But respect works. Knowing each street person’s name works. Mark Garner learned that. He wants us, and particularly the city’s business communities, to learn it too. The Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area (BIA) that Garner leads is "the front line support team" for a top tourist destination, a growing neighbourhood getting a flood of people each night. Some stay on the street. New faces appear daily. Garner and his Clean Streets Team - half its members once lived on the street - tell newcomers at

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto Yonge-Dundas Square where to go for clothing, shelter, a sandwich. They recognize familiar people, "the same three guys sitting on buckets with a teddy bear and a cup." They see who’s having a bad week, who needs attention most. It’s like hospital triage, says Garner. Understand the uniqueness of each street person,

approach them with compassion, Garner argues, and "you can then have a different conversation." Garner, who grew up in Scarborough and walked this part of Yonge in the 1970s and 1980s, isn’t trying to gentrify it. He wants social housing, real affordable housing, to be part of every development the city okays, because homelessness isn’t just a downtown problem. The BIA’s infographic, "One Night in Toronto," makes a point: if 5,253 people on a given night wind up in city shelters, jails, or hospitals, that costs us maybe $421,386,000 a night. If they’re in social housing, it’s $34,512 a night. Many street people don’t want housing. Mental illness is one reason.

One man we’ll call Howard was on the street more than 20 years, selling flags and key chains at Yonge and Dundas. Refusing housing, Garner says, was Howard’s right. But after 18 months of work by the BIA and several agencies, plus lots of hand-holding, Howard got clean, and now makes guitars for a living. "You can’t save everyone, but if you tackle them a case at a time, you have more of a chance," says Garner. Imagine if Toronto’s other BIAs committed to pursuing the same plan. Our city could change quickly. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Three Johnson Jaguars celebrate scholarships stateside CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The Monsignor Percy Johnson Jaguars marked a banner year for their athletics program this week by honouring three graduates headed to American universities on sports scholarships. Athletic Director Tullio Taccone praised hockey player Nick Campoli, and soccer stars Melissa Carvalho and Jon Alec Toromoreno as "dedicated school leaders" during a special lunchtime celebration in Etobicoke on Tuesday, April 24. "It’s great to see these kids living their dreams and going to the States on scholarships playing the sports they love," he said. "We’ve never had three scholarships in one year, so it’s a big thing for us." Campoli, 18, got his hockey start at age seven with the Etobicoke Bulldogs. Now a centre for the North York Rangers, he recently received a full NCAA schol-

arship to play for the Clarkson University Golden Knights in Potsdam, New York. "It’s all really exciting," said Campoli, who was also recently named the OJHL’s top prospect and ranked 73rd in North America for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft. "It was a lot of time and effort, but it’s everyone’s dream to get drafted by the NHL." Campoli’s parents, Angelo and Michelle, said they’re excited to be able to make the four-hour drive to Potsdam on game weekends to watch their son play. "It’s been an awesome experience," Michelle said. "We didn’t expect any of this. We just took it day by day as he went up the ropes, and now here he is." Carvalho, meanwhile, will be headed to Harrisonburg, Virginia, on an NCAA soccer scholarship to play for the James Madison University Dukes and major in Psychology.

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic school students Jon Alec Toromoreno, Melissa Carvalho and Nicholas Campoli have been accepted to three different universities in the US on sports scholarships. The school held a special lunch for the graduating students. Like Campoli, Carvalho, 18, got her start at age seven, ultimately playing for teams in Woodbridge, Vaughn, King City and Aurora. "I was scouted by a few schools, but JMU is the one that interested me most.

The campus is so beautiful and the team was really welcoming," she said. "Next year, I just hope to get a lot of playing time, make a good impression, and hopefully get rookie of the year." For Tony DeCarolis,

watching his stepdaughter’s soccer journey has been a "truly amazing experience." "Melissa’s been striving for this for so long and working so hard at soccer," he said. "She really wanted this and now she finally got it.

We’re very proud." Last but not least, Toromoreno, 17, will be headed to Nebraska to study Criminology and play for the Hastings College Broncos on an NAIA soccer scholarship. According to his dad, Jonathan, Toromoreno started kicking the ball around at the tender age of three - and excelled almost immediately. "He was always the kid that had that extra special speed, that little extra talent." Toromoreno has since used those skills to help the Woodbridge Strikers emerge as back-to-back Ontario Cup champions in 2015 and 2016, also winning silver and bronze at the Nationals those same years. He’s now looking forward to starting the next chapter in his soccer career as a Bronco. "I’m very excited to start a new beginning," said the aspiring MLS player/police officer. "I’m just excited to start and hopefully be successful."

Cardinal family donor matches for Ukrainian-Canadian Care Centre The owners of Cardinal Funeral Homes have set up a donor matching program to support Etobicoke’s Ukrainian-Canadian Care Centre, Jim Cardinal, along with his sons Andrew and Jimmy Jr., will match up to $40,000 of dollar-for-dollar all new donations received by the centre this year. Community-minded Giant Tiger has everything you’re looking for The company Giant Tiger typically brings out memories of Ontario cottages, but its expansion into the core of Toronto hasn’t gone unnoticed. This year, Etobicoke’s Giant Tiger, located at 2141 Kipling Ave., was the recipient of several Readers’ Choice awards. The department store claimed gold for best blinds and curtains, best women’s clothing and best overall department store, silver for best children’s clothing and platinum for the best clearance/outlet centre. “II believe these awards are being won because of the many great items Giant Tiger has to offer.” says the Etobicoke franchise owner John Del Guidice. Giant Tiger sells anything and everything a good department store

needs, but with the added bonus of ensuring each section is done well. For the clothing sections, Giant Tiger offers quality yet inexpensive clothing. They carry brand names like My Style, Lily Morgan and ACX. Along with those brands, they carry fashion stretching across varieties as well. Customers can get everything from athletic gear to fancy evening dresses all at the one store. “Giant Tiger has it all,” says Del Guidice. “We’ve got all these different selections under one roof.” The store also specializes in curtains and window treatments with a large selection of both. “It’s incredible the amount of curtains we sell,” says Del Guidice. He says it’s the same quality of curtain

that many of its competitors sell, but Giant Tiger sells with a great discount price. Del Guidice even purchased curtains for his own home at Giant Tiger. Del Guidice has worked the block of department stores, having managed stores such as Loblaws, and Sam.s Club (Wal-Mart), and is now owner of the Giant Tiger Etobicoke store, so he knows what makes a good one. He says that the key is to update with the times. “That’s the thing with Giant Tiger,” he says, “they’re always changing. They’re always adding and redoing stores to add the things that people are looking for.” TheKiplingstorehashaditsfairshareof renovations, some of them unintentional. The store opened in 2009. In 2014, when much of the City of Toronto flooded, the

Kipling store was drowned in water. The parking lot was flooded, the basement had six feet of water and the store floor was almost knee-deep. But they didn’t just fold up shop and give up.“We rebuilt ourselves in 2014,” says Del Guidice, “giving our store the newer image.” The next year was an intentional renovation, a 5,000 sq. ft. expansion.“The store was just too small for the amount of customers we were serving each day,” says Del Guidice. Now, the store features a rich brick and stucco front display, one that sometimes makes other Giant Tiger managers envious. The best part of Giant Tiger in Kipling, however, isn’t the items they sell or the building they’re in. It’s their involvement in the community.

The store hosts several events during the year, just to let Etobicoke residents meet each other and get involved with local charities. For a weekend in June, the parking lot of the store becomes an amusement park of sorts, complete with a circus-style tent, jumpy castles and huge barbecue. The GiantTiger also does a movie night in the summer, where they transform the parking lot into an old-school drive-in theatre. The money from both events goes to charity, rather than to the store. “It’s just about giving back to the community,” says Del Guidice, “and just letting everyone have fun.” Del Guidice isn’t kidding when he says you can get everything you need at Giant Tiger: clothes, curtains, even community.

Their highly-trained CAREGivers deliver tailored services to meet each individual’s unique needs, ensuring they maintain a high quality of life while staying in the comfort of their own home. For its ninth consecutive year, Home Instead Senior Care has been awarded the Readers’ Choice Diamond Award for Best Service Provider for In-Home Senior Care and Senior Assisted Care. More than just a service provider, Home Instead is a trusted community resource, offering tools, educational resources, and valuable insights to help families overcome the challenges that come with caregiving. The company works to raise awareness on important issues that affect seniors and their family caregivers. Recently the organization launched a free, nationwide alert system called the Missing Senior Network, to help family caregivers keep their

aging loved ones living with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia safe from wandering. According to a survey conducted for Home Instead, Inc., nearly 50 per cent of families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s have experienced a loved one wandering. “These frightening occurrences lead families to call our office and ask for help,” said Brenda Enright of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Etobicoke. “This resource was created to help Etobicoke area families understand the risk of wandering and have a tool that empowers them to quickly take action if a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia wanders.” Available at www.MissingSeniorNetwork.ca, family caregivers who sign up for the Missing Senior Network may alert a network of family, friends and businesses in the event their loved one goes missing. All families coping with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are eligible to sign up for the free, online program.

The Missing Senior Network is part of Home Instead Senior Care network’s nationwide Prevent Wandering program. The initiative includes resources such as insight into what may trigger wandering events, steps families can take to keep aging adults safe and tips on what to do if a senior wanders. In addition to providing public resources for families caring for those with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, Home Instead offers free Alzheimer’s Family CaregiverTraining to families in the Etobicoke community. The workshops, led by award-winning Education Coordinator Jennifer Churchill, teach family caregivers how to help manage dementiarelated behaviours, encourage engagement, and take time to care for themselves. Home Instead Etobicoke serves all of Etobicoke, including Kingsway, Mimico, Longbranch, Islington, Richview, Rexdale, and MarklandWoods. For more information on available resources and training CAREGiver Mary and a client. Take advantage of the season’s new beginnings to rethink all that excess clutter and spruce things up. The kitchen is the perfect room to start, and it doesn’t have to involve a complete re-model. In fact, there are many quick fixes that can give your kitchen an impressive and refreshing facelift. Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore Colour and Design Expert, shares some tips on bringing new life to your kitchen without an expensive renovation. t $BCJOFU DSB[F Changing the look of the cabinets will have the biggest impact on your kitchen’s overall look and feel. Grech suggests repainting existing cabinets and swapping hardware. “These are relatively affordable fixes that can make a world of difference. I recommend using a splatter resistant and washable paint in the kitchen. One of my favourites is Benjamin Moore ADVANCE – it is ideal for cabinetry and trim and offers the application and performance of traditional oil paint in a waterborne formula, making it easy to clean all those household messes. t -PPL PO UIF CSJHIU TJEF Lighting has a huge impact on the look and feel of a space,

helping to open things up while aiding functionality. Fortunately, you don’t need huge floor-to-ceiling windows or skylights to achieve a fresh and airy look. “A classic white kitchen can work wonders to create that airy feel we all crave, says Grech. “Try cabinets painted with a neutral white like Wish AF680, combined with a rich wall colour like my current favourite Wet Concrete 211440, which has just the right amount of a purple undertone to add some drama with a good amount of grey to keep it feeling sophisticated. This combination pairs beautifully for both modern and traditional styled kitchens.

t "EE B QPQ PG DPMPVS One of the simplest ways to update your kitchen is to add high-contrast colour with fun accents and accessories. “Dare to be bold with a uniquely coloured or patterned backsplash, says Grech. If that seems too much of an investment, then accent with colour patterned fabric accents; fresh flowers or fruit; or appliances such as mixers, blenders and toasters. “The kitchen really is the heart of the home, says Grech. “These days, it’s so much more than just a space where we cook – it’s a space where we gather to entertain friends and family which is why having a kitchen that you love is essential.

The weather’s heating up, and so are barbecues across the city. Royal York Meat Market is the place to turn to when it comes to local, quality meat. The butcher shop opened its doors in Etobicoke last December, and is already becoming known as the place to get top quality meat and fresh foods. “When customers step in the shop for the first time, their eyes go‘wow,’”says owner Ernesto Monte. “They’re always impressed with our selection.” Royal York Meat Market has over 30 kinds of homemade sausage, homemade marinade, chicken breast, chicken wings, thighs, kebabs, lamb, veal, pork, turkey, and all cuts of steak. “We have dry-aged beef, all aged over 45 days so it melts in your mouth,” says Monte. All of the meat is sourced locally, most from the Mennonites in St. Jacob’s, so it’s all free-range and raised without hormones. Monte comes from a long line of butchers - his grandparents owned a butcher shop in Italy, and his parents owned Monte’s Fine Foods on the Danforth for over 50 years. This is is second venture, after opening Meat on the Beach in the Beaches in 1996. For Royal York Meat Market to win best new business and best butcher speaks volumes about

the care that goes into all the food at the shop. “ It means my team is doing something really good,” says Monte. “It all starts with the employees and the customers.” On top of meats, they make a range of entrees, including homemade entrees lasagna, veal cannelloni and meat pies, and sauces including homemade tomato sauce, mustard, jam, salad dress, barbecue sauce and marinade. Royal York Meat Market is located at 392 Royal York Rd. For more information, visit the website www.royalyorkmeatmarket.com.

A Delayed Hearing Test is a Delayed Hearing Treatment Currently, there is no cure for age-related hearing loss, but there are a variety of ways to address and treat this condition based on your hearing health needs. Getting a baseline hearing test can not only diagnose your hearing loss if you have any, but can also help you track changes in your hearing overtime. Untreated hearing loss can lead to depression, dementia, even social isolation. Although these negative impacts are not the first symptoms of hearing loss, they are too often the reason why many people finally decide to see a hearing professional and get their hearing tested.

Dr. Chopra gives back to the community Dr. Chopra’s dental office would like to thank the readers for their fifth consecutive Readers’ Choice Award, this year taking the Diamond Award for Best Dental Clinic. For the past 24 years, dentistry and the welfare of society have been Dr. Chopra’s passions. Aside from offering optimal dental care to the community, Dr. Chopra makes it her priority to give back to others. Every year, Dr. Chopra searches for residents within the area who don’t have dental coverage and asks them to send her their story. After reading all the submissions, Dr. Chopra and a team of judges choose one entry as the winner to receive $2,500 worth of free dental care from her office. Dr. Chopra considers it her biggest achievement and honour to give somebody their inner smile. Etobicoke residents win Best-in-Show at quilting show Two residents from Etobicoke took first place at QuiltFest 2017 held in Fayetteville, North Carolina with both of their quilt submissions. The show was sponsored by the local Tarheel Quilters Guild and featured more than 150 quilts from different countries including: the United States, Canada and Italy on April 7 and 8. Many of the quilts were made from Kathryn Kerr’s 365 Challenge, a quilting challenge issued by the Australian quilter to build one block of a quilt every day for an entire year. The quilt judging was held during QuiltFest 2017’s "Symphony of Quilts" exhibition with over 700 people attending the event.Etobicoke’s Ann Elise Alexander and her sister, Wilma Alexander, won Best of Show and also took first and third place for their two submis-

Executive director to leave role in early 2018 AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Gail Nyberg, executive director of the Daily Bread Food Bank, will be retiring after 12 years on the job. "I’m kind of feeling conflicted a bit, I mean, I love this job and I love what I do, but it’s time," Nyberg told The Etobicoke Guardian. "It’s time to, you know, kind of turn the place over to someone else." Nyberg announced her retirement from Daily Bread, which distributes millions of pounds of food to more than 130 member agencies and close to 200 food programs across Toronto, on April 21. She will continue to serve until a successor is named and the transition is complete in early 2018, a news release said. Nyberg joined Daily

Bread as executive director in 2005 after a career as a school board trustee with the East York School Board, and then as the board chair for the Toronto District School Board. "One of the things that was really close to my heart, along with a couple of other trustees, was starting breakfast programs in schools," she said. "When I left the school board, and this position came open at Daily Bread, it was kind of like, ’Well you know those hungry kids, they have hungry families.’ So it was kind of like a natural progression." Nyberg added some of her favourite moments were when she spoke with clients the food bank had helped get back on their feet. "I think that’s what the food bank is about it’s not about people using it forever," she said. "It’s about people using it for one time or one month or six months when that one life event has changed, and then it’s about them going on

to not have to use the food bank." As for life after Daily Bread, the Bowmanville, Ont.

resident said she plans to give back to her community. "I’m sure I’ll find something to get involved in in my

community and help," she said. "I just want to thank everybody who’s ever donated or volunteered at the Daily

Bread Food Bank." For more information on the agency, visit www.dailybread.ca

Wearable tech product shines light on pedestrian deaths HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Wearable technology is entering a new phase of development that’s moving beyond the use of a smart watch slapped on the wrist. The next wave of wearable tech has expanded across the body to become "smart clothing" to help usher in the wearable tech revolution is the Torontobased brand VX360 high visibility gear, under the parent company Myant. Designed to make pedestrians, cyclists and runners more visible, VX360 is aiming to change the way we’re seen at night. The line ranges from $82 to $215 and includes utility vests in bright colors, harnesses meant to be worn over motorcycle jackets, backpack shields, bike sleeves, sleek mesh jackets and a reversible hoody. "We wanted to make it accessible for anyone, whether you want to keep your kids safe at night, keep it in the trunk of your car for emergency situations, motorcyclists, cyclists, people walking their dog on rural roads," said Shelli Oh, VX360’s design and project manager. "Really we wanted to keep people visible under whatever circumstance." The line launched earlier this year and aims to respond to the increasing number of cyclist and pe-

destrian deaths and injuries in the city. According to statistics release by Toronto Police, 2016 was the deadliest year for pedestrians with 43 fatalities, the highest death toll since 2005. Those statistics made the company realize that something was missing when it came to reflective clothing and wanted to improve on the idea. That’s where the Electroluminescent Light (EL) comes into play and helps put the "power of prevention" into the hands of the wearer. The EL technology has been around since the 80s, according to Donald Procunier, a member of the product development team at VX360. It’s found in the original backlit screens of flip phones and is still used in car dashboards today. The difference is it’s not stiff or clunky, it’s the opposite, it’s a paper-thin strip, nearly weightless material with a composition similar to a vinyl decal people place on car windows that’s also washable. The ELs, or lamps as Oh and Procunier call it, are VX360’s own patent technology, created by Mel Coats the director of application engineering at VX360. He’s been in the field for more than 20 years and was also the brains behind the luminescent costumes worn in the 2010 film Tron Legacy. This new take

having it "help anticipate possible safety needs and react to it," said Procunier. "Let’s say you’re a cyclist and you’ve preplanned your route on your GPS, it would know when you’re approaching your intersection and change your flash pattern to move even faster and when you leave the intersection it slows down," he explained. It’s also working with visibility experts to ensure future products have biomotion capabilities, where ELs are specifically placed on different parts of the body like the shoulder, elbow and knee, so that people understand it’s a person Justin Greaves/Metroland in motion rather than just this lit reflective object. Steve and Sophie Mickelson have visited High Park before, but they have never come to see the cherry blossoms until now. "I think they bring the promise of spring," Steve told The Bloor West Villager. "It’s almost like a painted tapestry within the trees." The Silverthorn couple visited the park Tuesday with hundreds of people despite the overcast weather to catch the flowers blooming. "We weren’t going to come, and we planned on just driving through," Sophie said. "Then we found a parking spot and decided to check it out." High Park Nature Centre staff previously told The Vil-

lager the Sakura trees on Cherry Hill hit "peak bloom" on Sunday, adding other trees in the park are expected to bloom by the end of the week. Etobicoke resident Heather Watts was walking through the park near The Grenadier Café when she stopped to set up her tripod to snap pictures. "I like the rain on them . it’s a different concept," she said. "It’s beautiful, it’s spring, and it says, ’wow.’" Recreational photographer Penny Rintoul of Vaughan called the cherry blossoms "gorgeous and beautiful." "In particular kinds of light, you get water drops on the flowers and

it really looks nice," she said. "And it’s overcast, so you’re not worried about harsh light on the flowers." According to Ward 13 ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor Sarah Doucette’s website, the swings in temperature have sped up the blooming process. The Nature Centre’s website said on April 1, 1959, the Japanese ambassador to Canada presented 2,000 Sakura trees to Torontonians on behalf of the citizens of Tokyo. Many of these trees were planted on the hillside overlooking Grenadier Pond, and around the east shore of the pond. Also, in 1984, Japanese cherry trees were planted near the High Park Zoo parking lot, and in 2001, 34 Sakura trees were donated to the park from the consulate general of Japan. "The fact that people aren’t rushing through, but are pausing to appreciate the beauty and nature is nice," Steve said. "It’s nice to see that in the city." Staff added the cherry blossoms are expected to last four to 10 days, depending on weather conditions.
