Young lawn bowler seeks second world title CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When Hank Spencer issued a call for youth lawn bowlers in the Etobicoke Guardian nearly four

"Attending the local public school was a challenge for my little sister, Hella, because the carp had invaded the sidewalks and she was afraid to be knocked over," Sturm, who was 12 at the time, laughed. "But my brother Bert, who was 10 and quite good at construction, found a bunch of boards around and built himself a raft so he could go out and spike those fish for dinner." The carp, Sturm said, became a major staple of the family’s diet over the course of the two to three weeks it took for the flood waters to finally subside from the front steps of their home. "Before long, my father invited people from the mainland who thought it

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com For Thistletown’s Ellen Sturm, news reports of Toronto Island evacuation plans during last week’s rain-soaked days brought with them a flood of fond childhood memories. It was the spring of 1952, and Sturm’s family had just arrived from Germany a few months earlier to set up house in an old army barracks at Hanlan’s Point when the rains came - and kept coming and coming. The flood waters that resulted from that deluge, she recalled, uprooted large trees, left the lakeshore a mess, and brought schools of large carp into their Toronto Island neighbourhood.

"For us as kids, it was actually quite exciting because it was something to do. Nowadays people are so careful, but we didn’t feel threatened by it and we didn’t complain. We were quite happy - we had enough to eat and we were together." A Canadian government webpage on ’Flooding Events in Canada’ did flag the year 1952, noting that problems of flooding and erosion in the Great Lakes have been the most severe when water levels have been high, "notably in 1952, 1972-73 and 1985-87."

Walk raises more than $60K This year’s Etobicoke Mandarin MS Walk raised more than $60,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. More than 250 participants and 32 teams walked the five-kilometre route last Sunday, May 7 from St. Mark Catholic School. Across Ontario, walks raised more than $3.2 million. More walks are scheduled for May 28. MS walk donations may still be made until June 7 by visiting www.mswalks.ca. Team Step Up, featured in last week’s Etobicoke Guardian, was the Etobicoke walk’s top online team, raising $15,675. Team captain Christine Nordal was the Etobicoke walk’s top online participant, raising $7,625. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling, auto-immune disease

Terry Fox’s dream has raised more than $700 million to date for cancer research, his foundation reports. Fox dipped his artificial right leg in the water in St. John’s Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. He then ran through the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario averaging an incredible 42 kilometres, nearly a marathon a day. Then on Sept. 1, 1980 just outside Thunder Bay, Fox was felled with excruciating chest pains. Doctors confirmed the cancer had spread to his lungs. After 5,373 kilometres, Fox’s Marathon of Hope was over. Fox lost his battle with cancer on June 28, 1981. He was 22.

Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Dr. Peter Ng has a special interest in natural pain relief and Chinese medicine.

Build Toronto announced the winners of its Etobicoke Civic Centre Design Competition last Thursday as the team of Adamson Associates Architects, Henning Larsen Architects and PMA Landscape Architects. The winning design, developed by an international partnership of architects from Toronto and Copenhagen, best satisfied the guiding principles established for the design of the new 500,000-square-foot civic centre on the Westwood Theatre Lands. "This proposal sensitively reinterprets its context of place and possesses a depth of design story beyond the skin of its built form," the competition’s jury chair, Gordon Stratford, said in a statement. "It showcases a unique ability to openly welcome and engage everyone in a setting that is both civic and communal." The five-member jury recommended the winning proposal based on its ability

The design team of Adamson Associates Architects, Henning Larsen Architects and PMA Landscape Architects has been announced as the winner of the Etobicoke Civic Centre Design Competition. to meet four key concepts: • Environmental sustainability - its ability to achieve a net-zero target, and the implementation of a progressive wellness standard for the future workforce occupying the new facility;

• Flexibility - the design of interior and exterior public spaces enables a broad range and size of community activities; • Community identity the design builds its story upon the context and diversi-

ty of Etobicoke, creating an animated visual signature of "a place of many homes"; • Pedestrian scale - the design’s inviting interior and exterior pedestrian scale and animated street presence.

The new Etobicoke Civic Centre will be composed of municipal offices, including gathering and civic function space; a community recreation centre; a Toronto Public Library district branch; a child care centre; and an outdoor civic plaza and new urban park. "There is no civic initiative more important to the Etobicoke community than the redevelopment of the Westwood Theatre Lands," Etobicoke-Lakeshore Coun. Justin Di Ciano said in a statement. "This exciting development will become the new heart of Etobicoke, where residents can join together to celebrate civic, cultural and seasonal activities." With the design competition complete, Build Toronto will now undertake a business case analysis to closely examine the merits of a new build versus ongoing maintenance and operation of the existing civic centre. It will be presented to Toronto city council in fall 2017.

Corrections A story on page 5 of the May 4 edition of The Etobicoke Guardian, headlined ‘Blue Goose Tavern up for heritage designation’, incorrectly described the existing building’s height The building is currently four storeys. A city planning report which The Guardian sourced contained the inaccuracy. We regret the error.

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

It’s time to celebrate our everyday heroes In a world often dominated by depressing headlines, inconsequential information and political movements that drive apart rather than bring people together, it’s refreshing to be able to take pause and celebrate something special. This year, we’ve got the Urban Hero Awards to look forward to again. And in all honesty, all the staff at Metroland Media Toronto can’t wait. The program is designed to be accessible to everyone in our city – you, your neighbour, that kid down the street who helps the elderly, teachers, social workers, volunteers – anyone can be an Urban Hero. That’s the beauty of it. It’s an awards program designed to recognized the average people in our communities who do great things, in their own way. For our readers in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, you’ll remember the awards program from previous years. But this time around, we’re launching with a new look, a slightly new awards process and nominations are open across the entire city. All this, in time for Canada’s 150th celebrations because we thought, what better way to celebrate what it means to be Canadian, by honouring the people that make a difference in the lives of others? Help us out by considering who you know that makes that difference. We’re looking for nominations in the categories of Arts, Business, Education, Environment, Good Neighbour, Health, Social Issues and Sports. Within each category the awards will recognize the ’Titans of Tomorrow’ (Youth 14-18), and the ’Champions of Today’ (Adults 19+). You can nominate someone today, but only until June 11. After we receive and confirm all nominations we’ll be launching an online public voting process, which will determine eight ’people’s choice’ Urban Hero winners. Another eight finalists will be selected by our staff, and the whole group celebrated at a reception later this year. Most recipients are modest about the impact they make, but it’s even more reason to give them the recognition they deserve. They may not be used to the spotlight, but what they do will no doubt serve as inspiration for others. These awards are a special opportunity to tell some really good news stories and demonstrate the strength of the good will that exists in Canada and here at home in our city. Go online to www.urbanheroes.ca to nominate someone or to learn more.

What if Toronto just gives TCHC away? Toronto Community Housing Corporation – (TCHC) – will shut 7,500 apartments in five years unless it gets $1.7 billion. And it probably won’t. Not from the city, not from Ottawa or Queen’s Park. Though Mayor John Tory says it’s reasonable, and a "moral imperative," to split that repair backlog three ways, expecting those governments to do it is a bad bet. At a TCHC highrise in Scarborough Village – newsworthy in 2015, when brick cladding on one side suddenly slid off – Tory sounded like a man convinced he’s doing all he can to fix something before chucking it into the street. True, the province’s budget is out, without new money for social housing,

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto but it’s not too late, Tory said. City taxpayers can’t pay, Tory argued, since that will mean double-digit increases forcing seniors out of their homes. "Property taxes were never meant to fund multibillion-dollar capital projects," he said, a bit rich from the guy backing up the Scarborough subway with a dedicated tax.

Tory wants another term, and the issue risks becoming depressing for him. Should he actually secure the funds, other TCHC buildings will require repairs to stay open. It won’t end. So, here’s a prediction for a three-way split: one third of TCHC’s 58,000 units will go to charities, one third will become cooperatives, and one third will be torn down. Tory’s TCHC task force suggested sending 5,000 units to a co-op board called New Home, and 5,000 to nonprofits who already have housing. He’s sold on the idea. Big corporations – he used to run one – are "very unwieldy," he said, and breaking them up produces greater local autonomy

and accountability. Tory suggested Toronto City Council will get recommendations this month on the possible transfers. If that works, why stop? But the city owns many old and failing buildings, like the highrise Tory visited last week, which it couldn’t transfer to anyone, except the dubious property managers already running them on TCHC’s behalf. Eventually, there will be no answer except demolition. That part sounds like a huge failure for this city, with our shelters full and need ever-growing. But that’s where we’re headed. SURF’S UP! Surfing enthusiasts take to the waves of Lake Ontario year-round PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUSTIN GREAVES

insidetoronto.com

Larry Cavero could never have imaged surfing the freezing Great Lakes when he first started surfing at age seven in his home country of Peru. But after moving to Canada and discovering the possibilities, he’s opened a new door to his favourite sport. Whether it’s -20C and hailing or the wind is gusting more than 50 kilometres per hour, you can find Cavero ripping up the surf along the Toronto shoreline. Cavero is one of the main organizers leading the surfing community in Ontario. He started Surf Dreams Canada, a local surf store which organizes events like beach cleanups and other environmental awareness events. On top of connecting aspiring surfers with gear and know how, Cavero is always keeping an eye on the weather forecast for rideable waves across Ontario. Surfers use websites specific for determining the size and direction of the waves.

(Clockwise from top) Larry Cavero, (left) and Andrew Dawson celebrate a good day of surfing at the Scarborough Bluffs in mid March; Cavero selects a board in his Brampton home for a day of surfing on the Great Lakes; A group of surfers wait patiently for a wave at the Scarborough Bluffs in early April. The shore lines of Toronto attract surfers from all over the province year-round; Cavero cathces a wave.

City to fight ’brazen’ development proposal CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com West-end councillors voted last week to fight what many Kingsway residents have charged is a brazenly outsized development proposal in the heart of their Bloor Street shopping district. Ward 5 Coun. Justin Di Ciano’s Etobicoke York Community Council (EYCC) colleagues unanimously supported his motion to send the city solicitor to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) to stand against Fieldgate Urban’s mixed-use development proposal for 2915-2917 Bloor St. W. during a special evening session Tuesday, May 2. The meeting drew a standing room-only crowd to the Etobicoke Civic Centre - among them, representatives from Kingsway Park Ratepayers Inc. (KPRI), Sunnylea Kingsway Community Association and Thompson Orchard Community Association. "The most egregious element in this application has to be the height ... but asking for an extra 34 feet of height overall is not minor, it’s greedy and it’s brazen," said Fiona Campbell, president of the KPRI. "This building protrudes on all sides into

somebody else’s space. It’s too big for the land it stands upon and the density increase is untenable." The much-opposed application in question proposes a nine-storey, mixeduse development, containing commercial uses at grade and 126 residential units above. In their report to EYCC, city planning staff noted the proposal conforms neither with the city’s Official Plan policies relating to height, massing, shadowing or transition, nor with the 2003 Bloor-Kingsway Avenue Study. Under the provisions of that study, buildings in the area are to be limited to six storeys (or 18 metres) in height, with a maximum density of three times the area of the lot. The current application for 2915-2917 Bloor St. W., however, seeks a zoning bylaw amendment to allow for a nine-storey, 28.4-metre building at 4.96 times the density. "Staff is of the opinion that the proposal ... represents an overintensification of development on this site," the report reads. "As such, the proposal cannot be supported and the city solicitor and appropriate staff should be directed to attend the (OMB) hearing to oppose the application in its current form."

Di Ciano, who tabled the motion to defend the BloorKingsway Avenue Study and its six-storey height limits at the OMB, said he thinks the case is entirely "winnable". "We have bylaws for a reason, and this particular community spent years and years and years working with city planning to establish certain development expectations. It’s very distressing when you put that kind of time and energy into something and the rules are forever changing," he said, noting that 567 members of that community signed a petition opposing Fieldgate Urban’s proposal. "So we are going to go to the OMB, we are going to work as hard as we can to establish our arguments that defend the avenue study, and I believe we will prevail." Di Ciano’s motion passed unanimously 8-0, with support from councillors Frank Di Giorgio, Frances Nunziata, Vincent Crisanti, Mark Grimes, Stephen Holyday, John Campbell and Michael Ford. The matter will now go before Toronto City Council for final approval later this month in advance of the OMB pre-hearing conference on the matter, scheduled for June 29.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

COMMUNITY

Thousands line streets for Khalsa Day Parade Etobicoke’s Sikh Spiritual Centre celebrated the birth of Khalsa last Sunday, May 7 with a parade that drew close to 100,000 participants. The lively Khalsa Day parade, which included three bands, four floats, 10 vehicles, and 20 bicycles, began in Mississauga at 1 p.m. and slowly wound its way to the Rexdale Gurdwara Sahib on Carrier Drive in Etobicoke, with road closures along the way. Khalsa Day celebrates the Sikh New Year and the establishment of the Sikh community in 1699. For more information, go to www.sikhspiritualcentrerexdale.com/

DNA helps woman solve mystery of her father’s identity Born in 1946, Elizabeth Kaegi was adopted by missionaries in India CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com There’s a painting hanging in Elizabeth Kaegi’s Summerhill home that’s reminiscent of a vintage Hollywood movie poster. Fittingly, the real-life wartime story behind it is one many would deem worthy of the silver screen. From the fleeting romance between a Welsh nurse and American pilot in Burma that conceived Kaegi in the dying days of the Second World War, to her adoption and upbringing in India by missionaries from New Zealand, it’s a tale surpassed only by the retired physician’s decadeslong quest to trace it. "For years, I spent typically between three and 10 hours a day doing research, building out family trees and writing letters," Kaegi, 71, said of her long and arduous search using genetic genealogy to identify the man depicted in the painting she would later commission and hang with such care: her birth father. "One of the things I think it’s important for people to realize is that just because you use DNA testing and genetic genealogy, that doesn’t mean the answers will just fall out of the sky. There is still a hell of a lot of labour involved."

Justin Greaves/Metroland

Elizabeth Kaegi, who was adopted, used DNA testing and traditional genealogy research to track down the identity of her birth father and to connect with his family. For Kaegi, that work began upon her discovery at age 14 that, unlike her older sister Rosemary, she wasn’t born into the family she was raised by. That news, she said, didn’t faze her so much as it piqued her interest. From the documents provided to her by her adoptive mother,

Kaegi learned that her birth mother - whose name was listed in the adoptions papers - placed an ad for her adoption in The Times of India newspaper in October 1945. Answering that ad, Kaegi’s adoptive parents finalized her adoption less than three weeks after her birth on Feb. 4,

1946 at a British army hospital in Poona, India. Using that information, Kaegi was able to successfully reunite with her birth mother in Wales in 1972. Although the two maintained a warm relationship for 30 years, Kaegi said her birth mother never divulged the identity of

her father - a secret she took to the grave. Undeterred, Kaegi set about tracking her birth father down in earnest upon her retirement in 2002 - a feat made possible only through advances in genetic gel See DNA, page 39

DNA cousin matches led to discovery of father l Continued from page 38

nealogy and DNA testing. While early efforts to track down several British candidates called "Leslie" - the first name of her birth mother’s rumoured Spitfire pilot boyfriend - led to dead ends when DNA analysis returned "inconclusive, but unlikely" results, Kaegi persisted. In 2010, when Family Tree DNA introduced its Family Finder test - an autosomal DNA analysis that boasted the ability to reliably match second and third cousins - Kaegi had both herself and her maternal half-siblings tested. What she found was that her test resulted in many more DNA cousin matches from FTDNA’s database - whose testees consist predominantly of North Americans - than those of her half-siblings. While Kaegi’s adoption documents reported her father as being British, she was suddenly faced with the prospect that perhaps he was American. "My matches, especially my closer matches, were all American colonial with deep roots in the U.S. - especially in South Carolina and Georgia. So I suddenly thought, ’Maybe I’m a southern belle,’" she laughed. After going back to the war records, Kaegi found that the US Army Air Force indeed had three liaison squadrons working out of her mother’s casualty clearing station in Burma around the time of her conception. Armed with that information, she compiled a list of 300 names of potential candidates. From there, she used FTDNA’s Chromosome Browser, coupled with her maternal half-siblings’ results, to sort her paternal and maternal DNA cousins. She then developed family trees for all close paternal DNA cousins in an

effort to develop a list of possible ancestral surnames - a list she could then compare to her roster of 300 possible American fathers. Then on Aug. 26, 2012 at 11 p.m., the breakthrough she had been waiting for. "I was sitting up in the TV room fiddling with the family tree of a fourth cousin on FTDNA on my iPad, when I spotted an unusual name among his greatgreat-great grandparents that seemed familiar to me: Pilcher," Kaegi recalled. "I checked my list of American candidates and found a Morris Rudolph Pilcher - an officer and a pilot with 155 Liaison Squadron of the 2nd Commandos of the USAAF 10th Air Force, from Panama City, Florida. That’s when it all started to come together." Kaegi admitted she didn’t sleep at all that night. A search through the war diaries confirmed that Pilcher had, indeed, worked in Burma from February to May 1945, so Kaegi began developing a family tree for him using Ancestry.ca That exercise resulted in the matching of three DNA cousins

on their respective trees, so she continued digging. Pilcher, she sadly learned, had passed away in 1994, so Kaegi emailed the Panama City library for his obituary and got a response within days. Pilcher - who went by the name ’Pete’ - had two daughters, whom Kaegi tracked with the help of a Florida researcher and wrote to soon after. "I told them my whole story, sent them photos, and basically said. ’Here’s why I think you’re my half-sisters,’" she explained. "Now, it just so happened that they were at a family do the next day, so they took my letter and photos with them, and I guess everybody said, ’Oh yes, look she’s got Pete’s eyes.’ So they were absolutely convinced that I was right." Both immediately agreed to DNA testing, which confirmed Kaegi had finally traced her birth father and earned her two new half-sisters. The trio met for the first time in Florida in November 2012 - a visit that included a trip to Pilcher’s grave and the sharing of photos, war records, and family stories. Kaegi now believes that she was likely the product of a brief romance at a V-E Day celebration party thrown in Magwe, Burma sometime around May 12-14, 1945. Whether or not her birth parents had any further contact after that remains a mystery to both Kaegi and her half-siblings. But when she shared the successful findings of her search for her father with the maternal side of her family, Kaegi recalled her halfsister sharing a telling story about their mother. "’You know,’ she said, ’this all makes sense of the advice Mum used to give us girls as we went off to parties: Be careful with alcohol in social situations... it can make you over-affectionate.’’’

Submitted photo

Kaegi’s birth father, Morris Rudolph "Pete" Pilcher, was an officer and pilot with the 155 Liaison Squadron of the 2nd Commandos of the United States Army Air Force when he met Kaegi’s birth mother in 1945.

How DNA Testing Works Genetic genealogy is the combined use of DNA testing and traditional genealogical research to infer relationships between people. Companies like Ancestry conduct autosomal DNA tests by using small saliva samples to extract more than 700,000 different DNA "markers", which are then used to create their client’s unique DNA profile. Then, using their database, they can compare those genetic codes to determine family relationships between clients. "In a nutshell, the autosomal test allows you to look through all your lines and connect with living cousins that descend from a common ancestor going back about five generations," said Ancestry Canada spokesperson Lesley Anderson. "Ancestry has revolutionized the way we do our genealogical research by combining what we learn from the DNA with the millions of family trees we’ve got up online to connect those dots." In addition to tracing familial

relationships, Ancestry’s DNA testing can also track ethnic origins by comparing its clients’ DNA profiles to the distinct genetic profiles it’s compiled for 26 regions around the world. "It’s a growing science, but we just compare your ethnicity to those and come up with an easy visual pie chart where you’ll see which percentage of you is from certain regions around the world," Anderson said. "The neat thing is that you may have a preconception of what your ethnicity should be, but some results could be surprising because of the way your people migrated over the years." Anderson, however, cautioned that some DNA surprises - be they ethnicityor family tree-related - are not always pleasant. "One caveat I always add when I’m talking to potential clients is that they need to be ready for surprises, both good and bad, because there are lots of things that can be covered up in a family tree - but DNA doesn’t lie."

I chose Tapestry. I wanted the freedom to decide what to do with my time. During golf season, I like to get up, grab a quick breakfast, and head off to the course for the day. In the off season, there are plenty of activities at Tapestry to keep me stimulated. These days, I can still make par. I have my health, and I get to enjoy my new friends both on and off the course. "You just gotta try it. It’s a great sport once you get into it.” ~Erik Galipeau Spencer, meanwhile, said that he hopes Erik’s story of success will help other young prospective players overlook lawn bowling’s reputation for being a sport for "a bunch of old farts in whites" and take a chance on it. "It’s a tough sell, but once people try it, they love it," he said, noting that the sport is highly popular in countries like Australia, New Zealand and England. "What Erik has done is great and I hope it translates into more young people signing up, because the majority of people we get are in their 60s when they start - and every single one of them always says ’I wish I had started sooner’." The ELBC’s season opened last week with an open house at 1313 Islington Ave. Spencer said anyone interested in learning more about lawn bowling is welcome to come out to the club any weekday evening at 7:30 p.m. or on Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. "You just gotta try it," Erik urged potential new players. level where Erik is, it takes hundreds of hours of practice." Just 12 at the time, Erik was an eager young athlete hungry for a new challenge when he happened upon the September 2013 Guardian article about a youth recruitment night at the Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club (ELBC). He promptly asked his dad if they could go. "I didn’t think I’d be the only one there," Erik laughed, "but I’ve pretty much played every sport, so I just wanted to try it out. I play hockey, too, and this is the polar opposite - but I came out and I just loved it." That Erik took to the sport immediately was thanks, in large part, to the tutelage of the host of ELBC coaches who took the youngster under their wing, said his dad Rob Galipeau. "That first night, Hank spent probably an hour-and-a-half working one-on-one with Erik then he asked him what he was doing the next night, so we were back the next night and the night after that," Galipeau laughed. "The club took Erik in and gave him so much attention and care. They were amazing," he added. "He fell in love with bowls and in the process gained about 200 more grandparents." Fast forward four years and Erik - now a 16-year-old student in Silverthorn Collegiate’s High Performer program - is gearing up for another season of bowls following a world-championship year in 2016. "I have had some amazing coaches," said Erik, praising Spencer, as well as coaches Brian Roussie, Jeff Harding, Steve McKerihen and John Bezear, among others, for their guidance in getting him to where he is today. "The people who have worked with me have been just unbelievable - I’ve been so lucky to have them." If it wasn’t for his coaches, Erik added, he wouldn’t have been able to win the U25 mixed triples event at the WIBC in Glasgow, Scotland this past December. "The whole experience was like a dream almost. Going into it, I honestly didn’t think I was going to score a single point the whole time, but then I got paired up with (Rebecca Houston, 15, of Scotland, and Dominic McVittie, 23, of England) and they were amazing," Erik said. "We all just clicked together and it ended up working in our fa-

vour. We only dropped one set the whole tournament. It was amazing." Next up for Erik is a jampacked spring and summer of weekend road trips to compete in lawn bowling tournaments all around Ontario and beyond. He’ll also be heading to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to compete in the 2017 Canadian Junior and Under-25 Championships from July 31 to Aug. 7, and to Victoria, BC to vie for the team’s national championship later in August. After that, he hopes to qualify once again for the world indoor championships and make a repeat trip to Scotland - and hopefully a repeat trip to the top of the WIBC podium. "For me, (lawn bowling) is it. It’s what I want, and I want to go as far as I can with it," Erik said, noting that, in addition to ELBC, he also bowls out of the James Gardens and Port Credit lawn bowling clubs.
