Why I won’t be there for the fireworks Rebeka Tabobondung Indigenkaus (my name is) Wasausking Ndonjaba (I come from) Amik Dodem (I am Beaver clan) This simple statement took me 40 years to learn.

This is who I am — but I had to fight like hell to figure it out.

I grew up in over 13 towns and cities across the country and experienced the public education system and its imagined Canadian identity in every one of those places.

Yep — I learned the propaganda that every Canadian my age learned: We are a nation built on universal values of democracy, human rights and environmentalism intimately connected through a "mosaic" of diversity, a northern climate and pristine landscape.

Let’s get real … all Canadians must question the legitimacy of these "imaginary" claims due to the historical hatred directed toward the First Peoples of this land and the ongoing lack of awareness, education, and movement building toward reconciliation and the forging of reciprocal relationships based on equality and respect.

Just today I was on Facebook calling for the resignation of Sen. Lynn Beyak, who said earlier this year that "good deeds" and "remarkable works" on the part of well-meaning residential school officials have been ignored in favour of more negative reports by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Just yesterday I was donating mon-

ey to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the relatives of Barbara Kentner, an indigenous woman living in Thunder Bay who was the victim of a drive-by assault in January 2017 by a white man who shouted, “I got one,” after throwing a very large trailer hitch at her body from a moving vehicle.

My challenge is to answer the call of one of Canada’s most worthy senators, the former chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee who, in response to Beyak’s statements during a public forum in Ottawa on missing and murdered indigenous women, asked Canadians: “Why can’t you always remember this?"

He was referring to the deliberate amnesia that Canadians have when they ‘imagine’ who they are.

“Why can’t we remember and honour the truth of our nation ... this is about memorializing those people who have been the victims of a great wrong."

I’m remembering who and what Canada actually is … and therefore I’m imagining what we could become. A confederation that chooses not to forget its past - but rather memorializes it in order to imagine and build something better.

For adults, there will be live entertainment, more than 30 food-sampling stations, Great Lakes Brewery beer sampling, Colio Wines’ sampling and a coffee and dessert bar.

"It will be the most spectacular free event for the community," said Laura Latham, Franklin Horner’s executive director.

"We want the community to come out and see our new digs. We want to celebrate the history of Franklin Horner and the history of our community."

E.J. Lennox, designer of Casa Loma and Toronto’s Old City Hall, was hired as the architect on the oneroom Franklin Horner schoolhouse built in 1910.

Then came Franklin Horner public school, then middle school, which closed in 1984.

The charitable, nonprofit community centre serves

south Etobicoke and area.

Its 1,300 members and 52 community user groups access a variety of social, sports and recreation, leisure and wellness programs and meeting space to develop their own programs.

The centre runs on a $600,000 annual operating budget, of which $28,000 is funded by the city, $42,000 of which is funded by the province. The remainder is raised through fundraising and space rentals to community groups, Latham said.

Financial survival was not without its challenges during the renovation.

In April 2015, the centre launched a fundraising campaign to maintain its affordable seniors’ programs in one-third the space as renovations forced the closure of the three-storey rental half of the building.

"Our finances took quite a hit. We were down $50,000 to $70,000 in revenue," Latham said. "The gravy train is our rentals, which support our seniors’ programs. Our

Seniors’ members responded immediately.

"We put together a letter for the seniors explaining the financial situation and mailed it out on a Friday. By

Monday, the cheques starting coming into the office," she said. "The cheques just kept coming. We raised $50,000. It shows the impact of how much the centre means to them."

In 2009, Toronto city council supported Grimes’ motion for the city to buy the building and lands for $4.5 million after the Toronto District School Board declared it surplus to its needs. Community benefits money from the motel strip was used to repay the city, Grimes said.

"When the school board declared another one of our sites surplus, there was no way I was going to let that go," Grimes said in an interview. "It’s rammed, packed full of programming.

"It’s really cool, the mix of the old and the new," Grimes said of the renovations. "It will be used by the community for years and years to come."

Last year, the annual Gems of Etobicoke-Lakeshore awarded the centre its Best Cultural and Recre-

ational Award, along with the Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra.

Arthur O’Brien has used the wood shop for four years. He and others donate some projects to the centre to sell for fundraising.

One Tudor dollhouse O’Brien made sold for $7,500.

"It’s almost a lost art," O’Brien said, as one woodworker taught another how to dovetail. "With a real sharp chisel and mallet, you can do amazing things. I’m truly amazed we don’t have 300 woodworkers here."

Ron MacNeil has been playing cards at the centre for five years.

"They’re all friendly people. I just love playing cards, making coffee and tea. Everything is great," he said.

Latham calls the centre’s volunteers "team leaders" and said the centre couldn’t survive without them.

"For our volunteers, it’s a job to them. They create friendships. It’s a community centre in every sense of the word," she said.

We won’t be intimidated A group of disgruntled city councillors in Brampton seem to be confusing freedom of the press with freedom from the press.

Angry with recent coverage by the local newspaper, some councillors are proposing a motion to scrutinize the media’s questioning of elected officials. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to intimidate reporters. The motion calls for all media inquiries to be posted on the city website along with responses. Councillors want future meeting agendas to include time to respond to media coverage.

Meanwhile, at least one member of Brampton council has taken to Twitter, suggesting the local paper isn’t providing "real news."

If it sounds reminiscent of the antics of President Donald Trump and his staff, that’s because there’s a strong and troubling parallel.

This is all in reaction to assertive reporting that is critical of the city’s leadership.

Councillors say they have put the press on notice.

Such a statement demonstrates a blatant disregard for, or ignorance of, the checks and balances already strongly entrenched in the Canadian media system.

Accountability starts with the news outlet itself.

Complaints can be made directly to a journalist, editor, or publisher.

If the response is unsatisfactory, individuals can contact the press council. The National NewsMedia Council deals with matters concerning fairness of coverage, relevance, balance and accuracy. Its members (including this newspaper) abide by its decisions. It’s a free and open process for the public.

When media make a mistake, we own it very publicly.

That’s not something everyone can say.

And there is the law. Canada has very strict libel laws. These laws protect the reputation of individuals and organizations from false and derogatory remarks.

Media are bound by these laws.

There have been no formal complaints made regarding recent coverage of Brampton. Instead, this is about a group of councillors lashing out because they are upset with what strong local reporting has unearthed.

These councillors forget that media are not accountable to elected officials. Media are accountable to the public, the same group whose money these councillors are spending. Claiming to put the press on notice is a poorly disguised attack on the fundamental freedoms laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Councillors are trying to stifle critical voices and control our free, independent and responsible media.

Any attempt by elected officials to limit the free flow of information is an attack on the basic democratic principles our society upholds.

It won’t work.

Millennials don’t want suburban Toronto dream Ken Greenberg builds cities, or rather, rebuilds them.And he told an audience of Liberals in Scarborough it’s time to rebuild Toronto’s inner suburbs.

Redesigning them will be a "wrenching transition," Greenberg says, and our biggest project of the next two generations.

A generation ago, urbanists like James Howard Kunstler predicted North America’s runaway suburban dream would start to collapse when oil became unaffordable.

Oil’s now cheap. But Greenberg told the Liberal faithful we must transform large parts of Toronto, or our city won’t stay successful.

ceries. They don’t even want a car. They’ve gone downtown, and companies follow them there.

Future success will go to Toronto’s mixed-use neighbourhoods.

Where does that leave the poorer areas of Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York? Greenberg says we must reverse engineer our wide surburban roads back into lively, walkable streets with more public places where we can meet.

Toronto’s multicultural identity is at risk otherwise, because the suburban pattern "keeps people segregated."

Surface parking lots and parts of hydro corridors become new mixed use neighbourhoods, a weakness becoming a strength.

Can we do this with the suburban politicians we

have? No, probably.

Many of them fought, and still fight, to save their "single-family neighbourhoods" against renters, roomers, townhouses, midrise condos, offices for midwives on a major road, or street parking, because certain long-time residents in houses - the people they listen to most - don’t want change.

But unless Greenberg is wrong, big changes must come, or those neighbourhoods will stagnate as Toronto’s core becomes unaffordable.

He was speaking to almost 100 federal party members. Some may become city councillors or MPPs. Let’s hope they’re brave.

That sentiment, expressed by six-year-old Khapelle Kabiah, was one shared by many in attendance at the grand opening of north Etobicoke’s brand new, $15-million Albion library this week.

The colourful and airy 28,000-square-foot space, built in the parking lot of the branch’s original circa-1973 library, opened to much fanfare on Monday, June 5, with special guest Mayor John Tory helping to cut the ceremonial ribbon in front of a crowd numbering in the hundreds.

Vincent Crisanti, noting that the library project came in "on budget, on time, and, most importantly, without any interruption of service."

Crisanti explained that when plans to replace the Albion library were first went to public consultation in 2010, there was public outcry from many who feared that the popular branch would have to close down during construction, leaving residents without service.

That’s when city and library officials came up with the solution to build the new library in old library’s parking lot footprint, allowing the original branch to remain open for business throughout the development.

"Etobicoke North is finally receiving a lot of attention - attention and investment that it needs and it deserves. Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to know that this is the first of many, many more good things to come," Crisanti promised.

He continues to advocate for a new multi-sport complex in the area, as well as improved transit.

Athlete centre of campaign CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Family and friends of Etobicoke’s Maya Rajhans thought they were seeing double on Sunday when the 11-year-old Under Armour ambassador helped unveil the Team UA NEXT campaign at Sherway Gardens.

The brand campaign features a life-size poster of the Grade 5 Broadacres Junior School student, which will now appear in Sport Chek stores across the country.

"Seeing myself on that great big huge poster was pretty amazing," Maya said. "Just to think that other girls are going to end up seeing that and being inspired by it to play sports was really exciting."

Maya, who plays basketball for the Etobicoke Thunder and soccer for the Islington Rangers, was recently selected as one of two youth athlete ambassadors for Under Armour (UA) following a nation-wide search.

As a UA ambassador, Maya was afforded the opportunity to fly to Under Armour headquarters in Baltimore for the campaign photo shoot, and also got to "shoot around" with CanadianAmerican soccer player Janine Beckie, who plays for the Houston Dash.

Under Armour will kick off its 2nd annual Team UA NEXT Canada campaign to choose the next youth faces of the brand on Thursday, June 1.

Baker’s latest private member’s bill follows the Ontario government’s recently passed bill banning door-to-door rentals, sales and leases of water heaters, furnaces, air-conditioners and water-treatment devices in Ontario.

That government bill borrowed heavily from Baker’s private member’s bill last year. Baker’s Stop the Calls bill would enable consumers to void any contract, provide for refunds and product returns, with per-incident fines of up to $2,000 to individual sales persons and up to $25,000 for their companies.

Consumers could take companies that don’t pay to court. If successful, the consumer would receive double the amount owed plus

legal fees.

Baker said he heard the telemarketing calls issues repeatedly when speaking with his constituents and his seniors’ advisory group about the door-to-door sales ban bill.

"The first reaction I got was, ’That’s great. Now can you stop the salespeople from calling me? I’m getting calls every day,’" Baker said in an interview on Tuesday, noting some people get four or five calls daily. Duct cleaning, roof repair and window repair services are the most-common constituent-reported calls.

Telemarketing pitches for services such as heating and air-conditioning, banking and finances, and longdistance phone plans are also common, constituents told him.

Baker’s bill would authorize the minister of government and consumer services to select the products and services the bill would ban.

Registered charities, not-for-profit organizations, political parties, candidates and their campaigns, and individuals or companies with an existing relationship with a consumer would be exempt from the ban.

Maria MikelenasMcLoughlin, a constituent of Baker’s who sits on his seniors’ advisory group, supports his bill.

Seniors "raised to be po-

lite" have learned strategies to deal with unwanted, repeat harassing telemarketing calls at home, she said.

"When we answer the phone, we don’t expect that someone is trying to bombard us with things that we don’t want. We’ve found it very difficult to say ’no,’" Mikelenas-McLoughlin said last week at Baker’s news conference at Queen’s Park.

"However, we are getting better. We’ve been using tactics such as using another language, or making up little stories or turning on the radio while the person is busy talking, and then we hang up."

She said the constant calls can send seniors into a "stress loop."

Viji Antony said ductcleaning companies call her home multiple times every morning.

"I really got annoyed. It was continuous harassment," Antony said at the news conference.

Many of Baker’s constituents reported the calls persist, even though their phone number is on the federal do not call list, and they’ve requested companies to stop calling.

"I think it’s a disgraceful strategy that deliberately involves harassing people over and over again until they capitulate or someone else in the home answers the phone," Baker said in an interview.

Tulip festival blooms in Etobicoke Spring officially sprouted into full bloom in Etobicoke this past week at the 15th annual Mimico Tulip Festival.

Sponsored by the Mimico Village BIA, the 2017 edition of the popular community celebration once again showcased the unveiling of 23 four-foot tulip forms — each one designed and painted by local schoolchil-

Ontario’s fastest growing local fresh food chain, Farm Boy, is opening its first Toronto store this fall in Etobicoke.

The Eastern Ontario grocery retailer will open a 20,000-squarefoot store in the Shoppes of Alderwood plaza on Brown’s Line at the foot of Hwy. 427.

A new Farm Boy store is welcome news to Alderwood residents, many of them seniors, who have seen a few grocery stores - the only one in their neighbourhood come and go in the strip plaza since Dominion pulled up stakes nearly a decade ago.

Asian grocer, Top Food, closed Boxing Day 2015. The store has been vacant since.

Mark Grimes, who represents the area, said he worked with Gargan Investments Limited to secure the retailer as the plaza’s anchor store.

"I kept hearing people tell me, ’get me a good grocery store (in Alderwood plaza),’" Grimes said. "My son and his girlfriend love the Farm Boy store in Ajax. I think people are going to love it."

Grimes said Farm Boy and the existing, popular Dollarama store could help the plaza owners attract other businesses.

"Those two anchors together will help the owners get better tenants in there," the councillor said.

"It will be great for Alderwood. I think people from Long Branch will shop there, too."

Last Friday, Shoppes of Alderwood plaza customers and retail store managers and owners shared excitement at the news.

"Sure. I’d shop at the new Farm Boy store," Alderwood resident Dana Popovic said. "We need a grocery store. The closest store is No Frills on Lake Shore (Boulevard West at the foot of Brown’s Line). A lot of people walk here."

Debbie Collet, manager of Shoppes of Alderwood’s large Dollarama store, said Top Food’s departure impacted her store’s foot traffic and sales.

"Since the grocery store closed, it has been quieter," she said. "People now go to No Frills and the new Dollarama on Lake Shore at Brown’s Line."

The opening of a new Farm Boy store in the plaza will bode well for her store’s business, Collet predicted. Company officials said the store will create 150 jobs in the community.

Jeff York, Farm Boy co-CEO, said Toronto-area residents asked the company to open a store locally after its locations opened in Whitby and Pickering.

"Offering fresh, wholesome foods and friendly service has been the heart and soul of our business since 1981," York said in a statement.

"We are excited to share the news today with the Etobicoke community and promise to work hard to earn their business."

Currently, Shoppes of Alderwood is also occupied by a bank, a computer store, nail salon, dry cleaners, physiotherapist, hearing centre, drugstore, dental office and hair salon. There are three vacant stores. Farm Boy has been named one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies.

The grocery retailer has 23 stores across Ontario.

FoodShare program grows again An Alderwood business has created a community garden with help from some Toronto public school board students.

Higgins Event Rentals partnered with FoodShare’s Field to Table Schools and School Grown program to transform its office frontage into produce-yielding gardens.

Students from Bendale Business and Technical Institute, Eastdale Collegiate Institute and Heydon Park Secondary School planted the four gardens on June 2.

The Horner Avenue and Kipling Avenue area business sponsors FoodShare’s program. The company offers a large inventory of products necessary to stage special events from small gatherings to large galas and street festivals.

Eight to 10 shots fired during altercation, say police CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Toronto police have released surveillance video of what’s been described as a "brazen" and "callous" gang-related shooting six weeks ago in north Etobicoke.

"This was on a Sunday when families were at home having dinner and children were out playing - so thank God that no one else was injured, but that could have easily happened," Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti said of the April 23 shooting in a parking lot at 1811 Martin Grove Rd. during a media briefing at 23 Divison on Tuesday.

"We have a wonderful, beautiful community here, and when these incidents happen - as callous as this was, as brazen as this was - it’s terribly concerning.

And it should be concerning to all of us."

Ron Taverner, police first received a 911 call to attend the 1800 block of Martin Grove Road shortly after 6 p.m. on April 23, but when they arrived on the scene, they were unable to locate any victims or witnesses.

A "very short time later", police responded to a second call to 345 Dixon Rd. reporting a man who had been shot. Upon arrival at that scene, officers located a male victim suffering "numerous" gunshot wounds to the lower extremities.

Taverner said that, although police received "no cooperation whatsoever" from the victim, investigators were able to determine that the two incidents were linked - and that the victim located at 345 Dixon was, in fact, the victim of the shooting at 1811 Martin Grove Rd. Police allege that security video obtained from Toronto Community Housing shows the victim arrive in the parking lot 1811 Martin Grove Rd. in a red SUV that evening shortly after 6 p.m. and engage in conversation with several people hanging around the area.

At approximately 6:07 p.m., the victim exits the SUV and is seen speaking with the suspect.

The two men walk away from the group by themselves and continue in conversation arm-in-arm.

"Then they separate and both pull out firearms," Taverner explained, noting that police believe eight to 10 shots were fired during the altercation. "The individual who’s a suspect in this shooting starts shooting and the victim was shot several times.

As the suspect is seen fleeing the scene into the complex area, the driver of the SUV is shown tending to the victim lying on the ground, who hands the driver what appears to be a handgun with an extended magazine.

Police allege the driver took the handgun and placed it inside the vehicle, then came back to assist the victim inside the SUV, before the vehicle flees the scene.

Dixon Rd. and transported to hospital.

Taverner said Siyad, who continues to recover from his injuries in custody, was arrested and

is currently facing charges in connection with an unrelated shooting investigation from back in February at 320 Dixon Rd. He is also expected to face firearm-related charges in relation to the April 23 shooting in the coming days, Taverner added.

Police have also identified the man who drove Siyad to 1811 Martin Grove Rd. on April 23 and who took him from that scene to 345 Dixon Rd. as 22-year-old Liban Hussein, of Toronto.

Hussein remains outstanding and a warrant has been issued for his arrest on several firearmrelated offences. He is described as black with a light complexion, 5’10" tall, 220 pounds, with short black hair, clean-shaven.

The suspect in Siyad’s April 23 shooting, meanwhile, has not yet been identified.

Taverner said the suspect was captured on TCH surveillance footage both prior to and after the shooting, and that he appears to have changed his clothing, hair and appearance.

He is described as male, black, light complexion, aged 2025, 5’8" to 5’10" tall, with a heavy build, black braided hair, and a thin beard.

"Just the callousness of this particular crime...It’s very disturbing to us, to the Deputy Mayor and to the community, and we’re going to be appealing for people to come forward and help us identify the shooter in this incident,"Taverner said.
