The Etobicoke Creek gurgles as it gently flows over the rocks.

The trail is reminiscent of scenes from the 1992 feature film, A River Runs Through It. Yet, construction by the city is imminent on a 1.2-kilometre long, three-metre wide, multi-use asphalt trail to replace the trail’s existing dirt and gravel footpath.

Douglas Counter, a lifelong resident of the Burnhamthorpe Road and Renforth Drive area, argued the plan will destroy people’s spiritual experience of the natural area.

"It’s an environmentally sensitive area. It is used by me and other people as a sanctuary and a spiritual retreat," an impassioned Counter said. "I’ve had amazing experiences with wildlife.

"Some people go to church. Some people go to synagogue. Some people go to mosque. Some people worship in nature."

The Etobicoke Creek winds its way through the valley east of Eglinton Ave. The city is proposing to pave the gravel and earthen trail that runs alongside the water. tinely sees great blue heron, white-tailed deer, mink, beaver and redtailed hawks along the trail, a favourite spot of nature enthusiasts.

Construction signs appeared near the trail in recent days. The city project is in a partnership with Toronto and Region Conservation (TRC).

A Ministry of the Environment spokesperson confirmed the project is pre-approved under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, meaning no Environmental Assessment work is required.

Counter argued the city did not give proper public notice and consultation with ravine users.

Residents could review project panels on display and speak with city staff, but there was no formal presentation.

"The city doesn’t realize how people use this space," Counter argued. "Anyone who uses this trail has no idea this is happening."

The trail project is part of the Bikeway Trails Implementation Plan adopted

by Toronto City Council in 2012.

The city mailed out 11,000 flyers on the project to area homes in advance of the May 18 open house, said Shawn Dillon, acting manager of cycling infrastructure and programs.

"Every time I’m suffering bad or anything upsets me or I feel stress, I get on my bike and go there and do a little meditation," Milicevic said. "I’m not the only one. It’s a sacred place, a sanctuary."

Like Counter, Milicevic argued the city "needs to look for other solutions."

Dillon said the rationale for the city-TRC project is to connect one of only two trails that remain unlinked to allow cyclists and trail users to travel from the Toronto waterfront all the way to the Greenbelt and the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Counter argued erosion also occurs on the forest floor above the creek marked by fallen mature trees.

"We want the proposed trail to be relocated to the top of the plateau of the ravine, and that it not be asphalt," Counter said. "We want the current site at the bottom of the ravine to be protected and preserved, and allowed to heal."

That won’t happen, Dillon said.

"The city plans to pave a 10-foot wide trail right next to the river, create a buttress with boulders 260feet-long right in the creek, take out 40 native trees and take out most of the natural topography," Counter said.

"This spot is so beautiful. It’s going to ruin the integrity of that site ecologically, and in terms of our enjoyment of it."

Dillon reiterated the city’s view.

"It’s an important trail connection that provides a really vital link from our waterfront to the Greenbelt," Dillon said.

"With greater access to this natural environment, there will be more users.

The city is doing this in an environmentally considerate and sustainable way that really cares about the natural environment while meeting the needs of users."

The trail is expected to be closed for nine months for construction.

Deep inside our ears are several thousand microscopic “hair cells.” These cells are arranged in rows and each cell is responsible for hearing a specific pitch, similar to the keys on a piano. As we age, some of these cells become damaged… from loud noises, chronic conditions, or the

In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help.2 This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Members of Dragons Abreast Toronto, a dragon boat team made up of female breast cancer survivors, are preparing themselves for a memorable voyage.

They will paddle the last 100 kilometres of the Rideau Canal with plans to arrive in Ottawa for Canada’s 150th birthday on July 1.

Paddling for Canada 150 was a perfect event to celebrate another milestone Dragons Abreast’s 20th birthday, said Eleanor Nielsen, the team’s founder.

"It just seemed like a natural idea," she told Metroland Media Toronto.

Nielsen, a breast cancer survivor, was inspired to start the team after meeting women from Vancouver in 1997 who were raving about their own dragon

Dragons Abreast Toronto, a dragon boat team made up of women who’ve had breast cancer, are celebrating 20 years together. To mark the occasion, they will be paddling the last 100 km of the Rideau Canal to arrive boat experiences.

"It just was something that hit me in the heart, and I thought, ’Well, if they can do it, why can’t we do it?’" she said. "They had a unique enthusiasm and joy in the people I met that just seemed like something we should have in Toronto."

In November that year, the team formed with 33 members.

Now it has close to 106

members, like West Bend resident Joanna Chrystal.

"They (the team members) always have your back," she said. "That’s one of the greatest things that comes out when joining a team like this is the camaraderie."

In the sport, 20 paddlers power the boat, one person steers it and another bangs on a set of drums, which is considered to be the heart-

beat of the dragon boat.

The team practices three times a week out of Toronto’s Sunnyside neighbourhood, and participates in local, provincial, national and international events.

But for members like Florianne Yeung, of Riverdale, it’s more than the competition that keeps them going, she said, pointing to the health benefits

that participating in the sport brings.

"It helps to prevent the development of lymphedema (swelling in the soft tissue of a limb where cancer treatment was performed)," she said. "We just exercise the upper body and stretch our arms and that’s what brought me to dragon boating."

Yeung added she was also attracted to the team af-

ter learning it was made up of fellow breast cancer survivors.

Looking ahead to the Ottawa trek, member Yasmin Alladin, of Scarborough, said it will be a "great" adventure.

"Before cancer, I didn’t think I could do these things," she said. "I became a new person, I’m stronger and it comes from being with a team of women who are so strong."

Breast cancer survivors to paddle Rideau Canal

- Dragons Abreast Toronto will start its trip June 26 on Edmonds Lock Lane, near Smiths Falls, Ont. - Nielsen said close to 30 members will make the trip.

- The voyage will take six days.

- According to Nielsen, the team hopes to paddle at least 15 to 20 km a day.

- The team will venture through 16 locks, a device used for raising and lowering boats between different water levels on rivers and canals.

- They plan to arrive in Ottawa on July 1.

Is TO Council losing its civility as election looms?

There have been some rough patches at Toronto City Hall this term, but on balance, the months and years following the 2014 election have been remarkably civil.

It seems as though Mayor John Tory has fulfilled that much of his promise at least: bringing a measure of civility to Toronto, after four years of bad politics and worse behaviour under his predecessor, the late Mayor Rob Ford. Meetings are cordial.

Clean-living is the rule of the mayor’s office. And hot-button issues have largely been kept from the floor of council.

And it would be nice to believe that Toronto Council could maintain that agreeable trend. Alas, it appears not.

Last month, nearly a full day of Council was spent on a toxic debate over city funding for the Pride parade and Pride Toronto, given that the organization had asked that police not march in uniform in this year’s parade.

Led by Etobicoke Centre Councillor John Campbell, the debate dragged anyone who was watching into an ugly game of dog-whistle politics. It recalled earlier sociallyconservative pushes against the parade and the city’s active LGBTQ community: complaints about the public nudity in the 90s, or Queers Against Israeli Apartheid more recently. It set us back.

And last week, Etobicoke North Councillor Michael Ford kicked off another blast-from-the-past debate. At the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee June 8, he persuaded committee-members to vote for a $500,000 study to look at replacing the streetcar service on Queen Street with buses.

This brings forward an idea that his late uncle Rob Ford floated in the 2010 election, and that found some traction with some of his supporters: get rid of streetcars, which often frustrate motorists with their frequent stops and loading and unloading rules, and replace them with buses.

This will not save money, it should be noted. Because of track and overhead work, buses are running on Queen Street now. And because those buses have less capacity than streetcars, there are more of them-and they are costing the TTC an estimated $1 million a month extra.

What the motion - or at least its debate - will do is help remind Councillor Ford’s constituents that he is indeed his uncle’s nephew. It will keep the Ford name alive going in to election year 2018 - much the same way that Campbell’s political theatre will remind his socially conservative constituents where he stands.

It also is a profound waste of this city’s political time.

PEACH shows Jane-Finch youth they matter Community agencies change programs, change purposes, if they pay attention to the people they serve.

They lose funding, but the best hang in, because not to have them is unthinkable.

That’s true of PEACH, a Jane-Finch centre which has filled many roles over a quarter-century, and just went through the heartache of losing one.

Its School Away from School education program, after 10 years, was cut because PEACH couldn’t afford one worker the public school board thought it needed.

But PEACH – Promoting Education And Community Health – re-purposed its classrooms and is moving forward. Like the

Most people don’t expect much of these youth.

sending them to another side of Jane Street, where they won’t feel welcome.

PEACH shows them everybody can turn their lives around. It’s given them somewhere to go, someone to talk to. Or a place where they can be left alone.

"A lot of them don’t share what’s banging around in their heads, and here they do, at least some of it," Lafontaine says.

PEACH’s music program has been steady for 10 years.

Terrence Penny started coming at 16. He’s now 22, and working four jobs, but still coming.

Penny recorded an EP here, then performed at the Sony Centre. "Every song I’ve ever made has come out of PEACH," he says.

"The support here of everybody is crazy."

Youth come from as far as Rexdale or Scarborough to learn music, says Dave Clarke, mentor and chef here, who DJs CIUT’s The Masterplan.

"Kids respect you when they see you grab a broom," he adds.

But programs get funded, not the $12,000 a month PEACH needs to stay open.

"Right now, we’re in more than a pickle as far as that’s concerned," Clarke says.

Lafontaine says PEACH, which needs creative ways to cover costs, gets few donations. What could they use?

"Anything," she says.

"Toronto Pearson is an important part of the region and your community," GTAA officials said in a release announcing the workshops. "Our airport is growing as an employment zone and now as a transit centre. Both increasing demand for air travel and the rising population of the Greater Toronto Area are behind our growth."

The workshops - which will take place in Etobicoke, North York, Brampton, Mississauga, and Oakville - will include presentations about the airport, followed by small group discussions on how residents can help guide the

GTAA through the next phase of its growth and ensure it manages the impact of its operations responsibly.

Humane society rescues more than 70 cats from hoarders CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When Becca Gordon first laid eyes on Arnold, he was lying calmly on a towel on the floor of a twobedroom Scarborough apartment, while his brother and sister cats more than 70 of them in total - scurried about all around him.

As the cat care co-ordinator for the Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS), Gordon and three other volunteers were summoned to the apartment on May 25 after receiving a request for help from an elderly couple facing eviction due to their large brood of feline companions.

"All of the other cats were running around some curious, some scared and scurrying - but Arnold was just laying there," Gordon recalled.

"One of the other volunteers pointed him out and said she thought there might be something wrong with him; that his leg looked bent. So I went up to him and picked him up. He didn’t cry out, he was just quiet and very sweet."

It wasn’t until Gordon and the EHS team got Arnold to a vet that they discovered his front right leg was fractured and required surgery to insert a plate.

Luckily, Arnold’s leg was the worst of the ailments suffered by the total of 68 cats Gordon and her fellow EHS volunteers removed from that Scarborough cat hoarding case over the course of three days late last month.

Most, if not all, of those rescued cats have now received initial treatment for various respiratory, eye and ear infections at the South Etobicoke

Arnold is the lone cat among the 39 EHS took into its care currently residing at the charity’s shelter on Six Point Road. There, nursing a postsurgery paw cast and eye infection, he will enjoy a large cage to himself while he takes the next two weeks to recover.

EHS Interim President Roma DeLonghi said that, while taxing, the whole experience of rescuing Arnold and his sibling cats has also been a rewarding one.

Still, DeLonghi said the estimated vet bills and care costs for the rescued cats will easily fall in the tens of thousands of dollars.

"The initial vet appointments were just the starting point, where each of the cats was dewormed, received flea treatment, were tested FIV or feline leukemia, given their vaccinations, and checked if they need to be spayed or neutered," Gordon added.

From those initial checkups, it was discovered that at least 11 of the cats were pregnant, while some others

And the response from our volunteers, fosters, and the donor community was amazing," she said, noting that while the Burlington Humane Society and Ninth Life Cat Rescue stepped up to take on the remaining 29 rescue cats, the Eric S. Margolis Family Foundation made an "extraordinarily generous" donation to help cover costs.

Local philanthropist honoured by OCAD Etobicoke’s Salah Bachir was formally installed as OCAD’s newest chancellor at the university’s convocation ceremonies at Roy Thomson Hall.

Kevin Ding (left), Soheila Mosun and Daria Mosun are student ambassadors for Selfless 16, an inspirational youth movement founded in 2016 that encourages youth to give back to the community through a milestone event, their 16th birthday. Soheila founded the organization and has been working to have Selfless 16 happen all across Ontario through partnerships with The Duke of Edinburgh International Award, Ontario and Sean Boutilier Academy of Dance.

Teen encourages ’Selfless 16’ acts of charity JASMINE HUI jhui@metroland.com Soheila Mosun, 16, is driven to raise awareness for community causes, and her work and efforts are beginning to reach across Ontario.

Though she is only in Grade 11 at Appleby College, Soheila is the founder of Selfless 16, an inspirational youth movement that empowers youth to give back to their communities through their 16th birthday.

Instead of having a Sweet 16, Soheila encourages youth to celebrate their milestone by raising funds and awareness for local communities and charities that might not be as fortunate.

"It started when I started attending Sweet 16s and I saw how lavish and extravagant they were," Soheila said. "At what point are we going to start thinking about others and a little bit less about ourselves?"

Kevin Ding is one of the student ambassadors for Selfless 16 and he said he joined because it provided an opportunity to help others, when the spotlight is supposed to be on themselves.

"It’s quite powerful to be

helping young people be able to transform their perspectives about their community and also about themselves and what they can do to help the place that they’re living in," Kevin said.

Soheila has been working to move Selfless 16 all across Ontario by partnering with The Duke of Edinburgh International Award, Ontario, and Sean Boutilier’s Academy of Dance.

The Duke of Ed. is an award that helps equip young Canadians between ages 14 to 24 for success in life by empowering them to discover hidden talents and potentials.

This partnership will allow Selfless 16 to gain momentum around Ontario and gain support from The Duke of Ed. in all communities.

"It’s empowering for kids to know that they can have an impact in their community," Executive Director Jeff Needham said.

"We’ll provide support to make Selfless 16 last and have a sense of continuity."

Soheila has also been working with The Duke of Ed. by participating in the award and recently earning her silver level award.

The Duke of Ed. award

has three levels: bronze, silver, and gold. Each level requires an increasing level of commitment and effort.

Through Selfless 16, Soheila is working toward her gold level award along with school, but even though she has a lot on her schedule, she said it is not hard to balance the two.

"If you really love something, you’ll find time for it," Soheila said.

Soheila will also be heading to Cornell University’s Summer College program for a three-week course on Inspiring Leadership to further develop her skills.

She is working toward pursuing her goal of having a career in the hotel industry and hopes to attend Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration after she graduates.

"I fell in love with the whole idea of hotels and hospitality, because to be good at hospitality you have to be selfless and be good at serving others," Soheila said.

The next step for Selfless 16 will be meeting with Mayor John Tory some time in June to discuss further development of the organization and receive mentoring from experienced individuals.

Richview is a neighbourhood in west Toronto, aptly named since it is rich in diversity, parkland and transportation. Ravines and parks surround the many homes, schools and recreation centres. Transit in the area takes riders to multiple TTC stations, one of which is Kipling, which connects to GO Transit. Toronto Pearson International Airport is also only a short distance away. When it comes to homes, there seems to be something for everyone. Many of the homes are 1950s and 1960s ranch- and contemporary-style bungalows, splitlevels and Georgian Revival-style homes with private driveways and garages. There are also new townhouses, condos, and rental apartments and row houses available. Richmond Gardens, Willowridge, Martin Grove Gardens and The Westway are all areas in Richview.

RICHVIEW HISTORY: Richview’s history started in 1852 when a local post office, called “Richview,” opened. At the time, the area was known for its farmers, who brought their produce into Toronto to sell at the St. Lawrence Market. When farms had excess Dixon family barn raising. beef cattle, they would also go [Montgomery’s Inn Museum] into the city to sell them at the former Union Stockyards on St. Clair Avenue.

The farmers switched from agriculture to dairy farms in the early 1900s, a move that lasted until the last dairy farm was sold in 1956 to make way for residential construction.

For a glimpse into Richview’s past, the two heritage homes : the former Dixon homestead at 1671 Kipling Ave. and the former La Rose homestead at 322 La Rose Ave.

DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca John Moore was the head of a successful farm that is an excellent example of the diverse operations typical of 19th century rural Etobicoke. Tax records for 1843 show that his farm was valued in the top 15 per cent of the 335 farms in Etobicoke.

His story begins in 1825 when his parents, George and Mary Moore, emigrated from Northern Ireland with their five children; James (born 1806), John (1807), Isabella (1813), George (1820) and Jane (1822.) They lived in a log cabin on a Clergy Reserve lot they sublet, located on 100 acres (40 ha) of land bound by today’s Islington Avenue, Bywood Drive, Kipling Avenue and Rathburn Road. George Sr. died soon after their arrival, and James and John continued to pay the lease on the property. James married and moved to his own

farm near Islington Avenue and Norseman Street.

In 1836, John petitioned to purchase their lot, receiving title in 1842. He hired Weston master builder William Tyrrell to design the house that still stands at 18 Great Oak Dr. This one and a half storey Georgian house is made of grey bricks, now painted white. Tyrrell added many decorative features to the home, including cornice returns with a quartet of decorative brackets under each of them and small brackets under the front eaves. The wooden eightpanelled "double-cross" main door has a transom window of multicoloured glass above it.

John never married, but his household was typical of many at that time, consisting of his bachelor brother George; his widowed mother Mary; his widowed sister Jane; his late sister Isabella’s child Lavinia by Isabella’s deceased first husband; and

The Moore farmhouse, built ca. 1842, at 18 Great Oak Drive. the late Isabella’s second husband, William Duncan, and their two children, Mary Jane and Alan. It appears that death was never far away during this era.

Moore was active in the Etobicoke Agricultural Society. Lists of prizes he

won at many 19th century agricultural fairs provide insight into the mixed nature of his farm; cattle, sheep, horses, wool, flax, woven linen cloth, wheat, oats and vegetables.

Moore was tax assessor for the township from 1839

to 1844, and was a returning officer in Etobicoke’s first municipal election in 1850. The Moores were charter members of St. George’s Anglican Church On-the-Hill when it was established in 1844.

When John died in 1872,

George inherited the farm.

When George died in 1885, he left the property to his great-nephew, Richard Morgan. The property remained in Morgan ownership, operated by tenant farmers, until 1946 when it was sold to George P. Wood of Islington who developed the land into the Islington Heights subdivision, retaining the old farmhouse.

In 1979 the house was purchased by the current owners who lovingly restored it. 18 Great Oak Dr. is listed on the Toronto Heritage Register and is the fifth oldest building in Etobicoke. One block east of the house is the magnificent white oak tree that gave Great Oak Drive its name.

Humber College celebrates 50th anniversary Staff and faculty celebrated Humber College’s 50th anniversary with a "groovy" 60s-themed President’s Barbecue.

Attendees at last week’s event at the college’s North Campus enjoyed live music, a photo booth, a candy bar, and mingling new and old faces who have worked at Humber throughout the years - including former president Robert "Squee" Gordon.

The day started with the unveiling of a 50th anniversary garden, which was created by staff at the Humber Arboretum and students in the cabinet making and industrial woodworking programs.

The wooden carved "50" sign, surrounded by vibrant flowers, is now located near the entrance of the Arboretum.

COLLEGE STREET TO CLOSE ... AGAIN Little Italy is bracing for more months of traffic headaches for a road reconstruction project which should have been completed last fall.

Right after this weekend’s Taste of Little Italy festival, College will drop to one lane both ways between Shaw and Havelock streets. The work is expected to last until mid-October. During that time, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) shuttle buses will operate the 506 route between Bathurst and Dundas streets.

KING STREET PILOT TO COMMENCE DEBATE The first major hurdle for a transit-focused plan to remove cars from a stretch of King Street comes as soon as Thursday.

The plan, whose details were unveiled last month, is scheduled for debate by the TTC board followed by the mayor’s executive com-

If it passes, it will go to Toronto council in early July.

Should it pass all approvals, a year-long pilot could be underway in the fall.

The pilot would remove automobiles and parking spots from King between Bathurst and Jarvis streets to ease passage of 504 King streetcars.

TTC UNVEILS PROPOSAL FOR EXPRESS BUSES The TTC unveiled an ambitious 10-year proposal for express bus service.

The first phase of the plan would add articulated buses to existing routes

and allow all-door boarding on the 192 Airport Rocket service. Another four express routes would launch by 2021, followed by another eight through 2026.

It would cost some $13 million per year to operate the new routes, along with $34.2 million to purchase 38 articulated buses.

WI-FI ON GO TRAINS? Could GO trains and buses soon have Wi-Fi? A Metrolinx spokesperson confirmed the search is on for a private partner to operate such a service.

Anne Marie Aikins said an expression of interest was issued for a potential contractor to administer a wireless system "that is cost neutral to Metrolinx."

If a suitable partner is found, Wi-Fi could be on GO vehicles by early 2018, said Aikins.

Reading for fun loses out to technology with older kids Scholastic report reveals older kids use electronics more JASMINE HUI jhui@metroland.com Children all across Canada are reporting that they love reading for fun, but as they get older, academic requirements and electronic devices are beginning to taking up their time.

Scholastic released the Canadian edition of the "Kids & Family Reading Report" at the beginning of May and it revealed that older children from age 15 to 17 are starting to spend more time using digital devices rather than reading for fun.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is taking steps to incorporate technology with reading to encourage students to have good reading habits.

"We do this activity where we talk about newspaper articles or read a book and share things about it with my family," Saskia said "I also do it at school as well."

According to the report, seven in 10 children enjoy reading books for fun five to seven days a week, but the percentage decreases as they grow older.

Twenty-five per cent of older children are reading books for fun and more than 60 per cent are spending their time online and using electronic devices.

Teacher and librarian at John Ross Robertson Jennifer Tong said teachers should be open to including technology into their classrooms as academic workload increases with grade.

"There’s definitely a high interest in technology and I try to encourage a balance," Tong said. "Kids that don’t have access to technology are missing out on certain aspects of a functioning society and kids who do it too much and don’t want to pick up a book anymore are losing out as well."

The TDSB’s central coordinating principal of literacy David Hawker-Budlovsky believes that reading happens on all mediums and even unknowingly.

He said parents and teachers need to customize a time for students to develop good habits.

"Even when we say gaming, there’s still a lot of reading that can be done on a device, in context of a game," Hawker-Budlovsky said.

Saskia thinks reading is better than using digital devices because it helps people become more knowledgeable.

"There are history books, but there are also books that are fiction that are really enjoyable and it doesn’t just melt your brain," Saskia said. "Reading on a device is better, because you don’t play games that don’t help you. There’s a good book for everyone."

Police identify 20-year-old murder victim A man gunned down early Sunday in the Emery neighbourhood has been identified as 20-year-old Soumik Asgar.

Toronto police said they were called to Blue Haven Crescent, southeast of Finch and Islington avenues, for a shooting at 2:27 a.m.

Asgar was found injured in the driver’s seat of a car

and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward.

"Anyone who may have witnessed anything, heard or seen anything at all, we’re appealing to them to come forward and speak with us," Toronto police spokesperson Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook said.

The constable said police received reports that six-toseven shots were heard.

But area resident Safi Gharwal said he heard 15to-20 shots fired all at once.

"And that was it. It just quieted down after that," he said. "I definitely knew it was gunshots."
