Cpl. David Ellwood pays tribute to grandfather’s service in battle CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When Cpl. David Ellwood steps onto the beach in Dieppe, France, this weekend, he’ll not only be honouring the 75th anniversary of the single bloodiest day the Canadian military endured during the Second World War - he’ll also be walking in the footsteps of his grandfather. "By the time I was old enough to understand his sacrifice and to have a conversation with him about it, his health was well into the decline. Everything I learned about his experience during the war has been second-hand knowledge," Ellwood said of his late "papa" Geoffrey George Ellwood, a signaller attached to the Essex Scottish Regiment, who was captured during the Battle of Dieppe and spent the next 33 months in German prisoner of war (POW) camps. "I never got to hear about it through his own words, so this trip is a chance for me to walk where he walked and to get a better understanding of the experiences that really shaped his life and lead him to become the man he was." Launched on Aug. 19, 1942, the Dieppe Raid is billed as one of the "darkest chapters" in Canada’s military history. Of the 4,963 Canadian soldiers who embarked on the ill-fated raid, 3,350 became casualties - including 916 who lost their lives and 1,950 more who, like Ellwood’s grandfather, were taken prisoner. "He got on the beach and immediately his sergeant was killed, so he was just trying to maintain radio communications and to communicate as much as he could to the ships," Ellwood said of his grandfather’s Dieppe story, which was passed along to

"At a certain point, it became obvious that the battle was lost and my papa was one of the ones trying to organize a retreat from the beach, but that was found to be impossible and they surrendered." As a tribute to his grandfather, Ellwood - himself a seven-year reservist with the 32 Combat Engineer Regiment - flew to France over the weekend with 130 other Canadian soldiers to participate in the upcoming ceremonies to mark the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. There, Maj. Indira Thackorie said the 25-year-old, fourth-generation soldier was expected to spend this week touring the battlefield and practicing drill commands with a guard consisting of

prisonment - on Sept. 15, 1942, his 21st birthday. Undeterred by the nearly three-year ordeal behind barbed wire that followed, and unbroken after surviving a 30-day "death march" during the final stages of the Second World War, Geoffrey George Ellwood chose to continue his military service after returning to Canada from the war. He retired as a chief warrant officer following a 38-year military career that saw him serve in the Korean War and the Congo.
representatives from every regiment that landed in Dieppe 75 years ago, before participating in three days of memorial events organized by Veterans Affairs Canada over the weekend. Ellwood may also get a chance to speak with one of the 15 Second World War veterans Thackorie said the Canadian Forces ais taking with them to France for the occasion - five of whom landed on the beaches of Dieppe alongside his grandfather on Aug. 19, 1942. "There aren’t very many commemorative events where the actual vets who were in the battle remain. This might be the last one, so it’s going to be very special," Thackorie said. "It was also important for us to have (Ellwood) with us, knowing what a personal connection he has to Dieppe. The whole point of doing all this is to honour the service and sacrifices that were made 75 years ago, and being able to do so with a descendant makes it even more special." Thackorie urged all Canadians to take the opportunity this weekend to honour Dieppe’s fallen soldiers - be it by wearing a poppy, sharing their story or by simply observing a moment of silence in their honour. "I think it’s really important, especially since we’re celebrating Canada 150 this year, that we honour them," she added. "Who we are as a nation is defined by moments in time like Dieppe, when Canadians served and sacrificed." Ellwood, meanwhile, is hoping that by finally stepping on that beach in Dieppe, he’ll gain a deeper understanding of and connection with his late grandfather. "Family history and the military has always been really important to me and the rest of my family," he said. "The Second World War really defined us as a country, so to be able to pay tribute to such a devastating part of Canadian history, and get the opportunity to see and understand more about what my grandfather went through, it will be something."

ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Karim Hakimi’s hard childhood in Iran was the "key" to his success as a business tycoon in Canada. When Hakimi was five, his father died. And a few years later, at age nine or 10, Hakimi found work, first as a blacksmith and then grinding magnifying glass from old windowpanes to make eyeglasses where he also learned about different aspects of the eyewear business. He would work from sunrise to sunset. "The worst time was the summer because the sun never went down," Hakimi said in an interview. "I was so skinny you can play guitar on my ribs. That’s why for the rest of my life I love food." Hakimi also convinced his boss to let him take eyeglasses and sell them on his day off. And he would sell the glasses near mosques.
"I often managed to make people buy two pairs or three pairs by telling them, ’Tomorrow I’m not here. This is your only chance,’" said Hakimi, adding he ended up earning more money on that one day than the other six days of the week combined. Hakimi said he always had a love for water and the ocean so, at age 19, he joined the Iranian Navy. When Hakimi finished his navy service, he received a passport, allowing him to move to Germany, then Switzerland where he continued working in factories making lenses. Hakimi said he eventually realized that he didn’t want to be a factory worker his whole life. "I wanted to own the factory. In Europe it’s impossible . so I wrote a letter (asking) to immigrate to United States, to Canada, to Australia," he said. The Canadian embassy was the first to reply and asked Hakimi if he wanted to move to Toronto.
Staff/Metroland
Hakim Optical founder Karim Hakimi displays some glasses frames in his personal office showroom on Wednesday, March 29. "I said, ’What’s that?’ . I never heard of Toronto," Hakimi recalled. Hakimi worked in factories in Toronto for six months before opening his own wholesale optical business in 1967. He rented space in the
former Elmwood Hotel on Elm Street downtown where he posted a handwritten sign on a piece of plywood that read "Hakim Optical," dropping the last "i" in his surname. "I started as a one-man show," he said. "I went to the
stores and told them, ’Give me your prescription glasses and I will make it,’ and with the emery powder and with simple machinery, primitive machinery, I started grinding lenses and polishing lenses." Hakimi was paid $3.50 for
a pair of lenses, making a 50 cent profit. But the retail outlets would sell the glasses for $50 or more and eventually joined the retail side as well, selling below his competitors’ rates. "The retail kept growing," he said. "I had first 20 people a day, becoming 30 people a day, and then I hired an optometrist, and then the optometrist couldn’t handle the load." He made his first million dollars by the early 1970s, though he says it’s not the money that drives him. "It’s the enjoyment that I worked for, and the money came by itself," he said. Hakimi, now 84, lives in North Toronto and still works 10 hours a day with no plans to retire. "The experience that I have through life is an asset. I want to put it to good use. If I retire, all the assets, all the knowledge, all the knowhow is going to go to waste," he said, adding "I don’t want to waste my time sitting somewhere doing nothing."

ABOUT US
Be a tourist in your own backyard At 150, it’s safe to say that Canada has aged pretty well. It’s also safe to assume that most Canadians have a fairly decent grasp of their country; its diverse regions and cultures, and the landmarks and destinations that have become synonymous with travelling across our land. The majestic Rockies. The vast prairies. Thundering Niagara Falls. Historic Quebec City. Peggy’s Cove. You know them, but have you visited? Canadians like to travel, flocking to New York City, or Florida, or heading overseas to explore Paris or Rome. All worthy destinations. But is 2017 the year to explore a little closer to home? Many in the tourism industry certainly think so. Last fall, Lonely Planet chose Canada as its ’destination of the year’ for 2017. Earlier this year, the New York Times ranked Canada as its top travel destination. The reasons are many: a favourable exchange rate; safety concerns in major destinations in Europe; an endless variety of attractions that coincide with our year-long sesquicentennial celebration. Fun and cultural awareness aside, tourism is big business. Nearly 20 million international visitors came in 2016, with the majority, 13.9 million, coming from the U.S. To keep those intrepid travellers happy, fed and informed requires hundreds of thousands of jobs in the tourism sector, accounting for roughly 11 per cent of the total labour force. Generating $90 billion in total economic activity, tourism is good business as well as nation-building. So by all means hop on a plane or train and see the sights. But remember, some of the best-kept secrets are right around the corner. It’s often true that citizens of a particular city or area, having lived there for years, have never taken the time to actually be a tourist in their town. The CN Tower, Fort York, Kensington Market, all draw foreign visitors but may remain a mystery to folks literally around the corner. Don’t know what’s out there to see? Start with a visit to your local tourism office. There are a myriad of treasures in and around Toronto. Or check out one of the dozens of festivals or attractions in the city. From the CNE to Buskerfest to TIFF, thousands attend these events each year, but you wouldn’t have to look very hard to find a friend or neighbour who has never attended any of them. On a tight budget? Hop on a bike and see things you typically miss in a car. Find a free movie night at a local park. Head to your local library for free programs and events. Be a tourist in your own backyard. You’ll be happy you did.

A vibrant culture may be victim of city’s success One of the advantages of being a few steps behind the curve is that you get a warning before the precipitous drop. So it is, and often has been, with Toronto when held against other major world cities. For example, as our underfunded transit system teeters, New York City’s bigger and older one is in collapse. Watching that sort of thing go on elsewhere gives us urgency here. With that in mind, it might be wise to peer over the horizon and across the pond at another city on a different kind of brink: London. The U.K. capital is way ahead of Toronto on a different trajectory than public transit: raw wealth. Toronto’s until-just-now booming real estate market is nothing
DAVID NICKLE The City compared to the explosion in cost and wealth that’s happened in London. Housing has been priced out of any reasonable family budget, and that has led to an exodus. As reported in The Guardian earlier this month, people are leaving the city to the tune of 80,000 annually: both homeowners and renters. And, it’s not just people. The so-called "night" economy has taken a hit along

with that - because, as old common areas are redeveloped, so go the activities that might have taken place there. Culturally, the city is becoming sterile. It seems as though Toronto is on the same trajectory. Live music venues have been shuttering like a row of dominoes this year, as redevelopment pushed out some and untenable rent hikes pushed out others. And it’s not just concert venues. Dramatic shifts in property values are forcing softer cultural spots, like the venerable Eliot’s Bookstore on Yonge Street, to close down. It’s a side-effect of prosperity: a rising real estate tide raises all boats, and property taxes too. The House of Lords hair
salon, just a few doors down, is closing under similar pressures. Those places join Sam the Record Man, A & A Records and Tapes, HMV, and The World’s Biggest Bookstore among the chorus of destinations that at one point drew if not the world, then much of the country, to Toronto. It begs the question: how long can Toronto stay a cultural centre, with the culture gone from its centre? FAMILY
MAKING A SPLASH TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The Budapest 2017 FINA World Masters Championships swimming relay this Friday will be a three-generation Thornley family affair. Yvonne Thornley, 81, will be competing alongside three of her children - Yvette, 55, Charlene, 58 and Mark, 59, and three of her grandchildren - Madison Knott, 25, Tori Stockwell, 28 and Kale Stockwell, 30. It’s a rare opportunity, the Etobicoke family said, to compete alongside their inspiration - in life, and in the water. "We’re pretty close," Yvette said of her family. "It’s going to be fun going to Budapest and being with my mother. "Our mother is definitely our inspiration. She encouraged us as adults to get back into swimming. I think we all have a natural affinity for the water." Three generations of Thornleys will swim in each of two, 200metre relays. The Thornley matriarch is seeking to repeat her 2014 Montreal FINA Masters success, when she medalled in the 100-metre butterfly, the 50 m butterfly and the 50 m backstroke. In Budapest, Thornley will compete in the 50 m backstroke, the 100 m backstroke and the 50 m butterfly. Throughout her three-decade career, Thornley has also won 21 medals and 18 first-place ribbons and 73 second- and third-place ribbons in swimming competitions around the globe. "I’m overwhelmed by it. I can’t believe it," Thornley said of her family relay. "I’m so happy they’re into the sport. I know it’s good for them and it will always be good for them. You do your best and you swim hard." In 1988, she won her first ribbons. She was hooked. "I loved going to the meets. I loved the competitions," Thornley said. "The butterfly takes a lot of energy to do it. But I like to compete in events with a little more challenge. I don’t do freestyle." Early morning last Wednesday, Yvonne, Yvette, Charlene and Mark, all in navy swimsuits and matching Canada racing caps, trained at the Norseman Masters Aquatic Club, or NORMAC,

where Yvonne is a founding member. Mark said he leapt at the chance to relay when his mom asked. "It’s a bit glamorous to be doing it out of the country," Mark said. "I thought it was a great idea.
We’ll make incredible memories. It’s quite a thing to see. She’s very inspirational." Charlene is excited to participate in the relays with her children, Tori and Kale, both "natural swimmers." She credited her mom for en-
couraging her kids in swimming. Kale, who recently took to swimming, "attacks it with a passion," and often asks his Gibby, or grandmother, for training advice, Charlene said. Like her mom, Charlene began swimming at age 50 to relieve
back pain. Now, she and her sister, Yvette, swim with their mom’s club, NORMAC. "It’s a bit of a role reversal," Charlene said. "We met our mom’s friends. We all have coffee together. It has been great. There’s a real connection there." Madison also credited her grandmother with inspiring her from a young age. "Gibby brought me to my first swim tryout, taught me every stroke, calmed my nerves before my races and gave me hugs afterwards," she said. "Swimming a relay race with Gibby and being with my family in Budapest will be another wonderful memory I will always have, thanks to my grandmother. She is a true inspiration in the pool and in life." While Thornley swam summers in Lake of Bays in Huntsville, when her children were young, she didn’t come to competitive swimming until age 50. She desperately sought relief from debilitating back pain. It worked. "I used to have back pain so badly that I’d crawl on the floor to get into bed," Thornley recalled. "After a few months of swimming, I felt very good. I’ve not had any back pain since." Initially, Thornley began swimming at the Etobicoke Olympium, not far from the home she and her husband, Roy, 89, purchased in 1959. The couple moved to Cobourg last year. At the Olympium, Thornley met Bob Tilley, a firefighter who wanted to coach. Tilley founded NORMAC for swimmers 18 and older. "I liked the camaraderie. All the people were just great," Thornley said of her NORMAC friends. "It was hard work. You really had to push yourself. But once the endorphins get going, you feel so good. I just love swimming." Now every winter, Thornley swims 1,500 m in the Pacific Ocean starting at 7:30 each morning off her home in Playa Zancudo, Costa Rica. She coaches, and swims with friends, who call themselves the Zancudo Mermaids. "You have a lot more buoyancy in the ocean," she said. "When you take the first few strokes, it feels like you’re floating on air only you’re in the water. There’s no pressure on you."

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Joy Shepherd spent more than 30 years working with children and families. After retiring from her job six years ago as a psychometrist, where she was responsible for administering and scoring psychological and neuropsychological tests at The Hospital for Sick Children, the Toronto resident realized her work wasn’t done. So, Shepherd decided to write books geared toward youngsters aged five to 10 which dealt with grown-up and dark topics - Alzheimer’s disease and inappropriate touching. "The books are tools to open up serious discussions," said the mother of three grown kids. The Monster in My Room deals with the emotions a young person might experience after being violated and told not to tell. "I am the voice for those who have not yet found their own," Shepherd writes for the 28-page
Justin Greaves/Metroland
Author, Joy Shepherd recently published two children’s books, one book, titled Grandma Doesn’t Know My Name, deals with the affect Alzheimer’s disease has on children. book’s dedication, which she echoes several times in an interview. In the book, a young girl finds her voice and encourages others in similar situ-
ations to do the same. The Monster in My Room is accompanied by a note to parents from social worker Marion Soloway, who notes one in four children will be
inappropriately touched by the time they reach 18. Her second book, Grandma Doesn’t Know My Name, tells the story of a young girl whose grand-
mother suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Although her grandmother might not be able to recall her granddaughter’s name, readers are reassured the pair can still do fun things together, and the older woman’s love for the young girl remains the same. The 26-page book also explains what Alzheimer’s disease is and that it’s not contagious. In the note to parents at the book’s beginning, Dr. Sandra E. Black, who holds the Brill Chair in neurology, department of medicine, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto, writes some 48 million people are affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia, with more than nine million in North America alone - and those numbers are expected to double by 2030. "Grandma Doesn’t Know My Name does a wonderful job helping children learn to accept these changes, even if they can’t understand them," she wrote.
A photo of Shepherd’s parents, Siggy and Nancy Levy, are featured on the cover. Shepherd and 83year-old Nancy’s handprints are on the back, with Shepherd’s print shrunk to replicate that of a child. "My mother suffers from Alzheimer’s disease," Shepherd said. "She is an incredible human being. She was born happy and still has a smile. I love and miss her so much. They’re gone, but they’re still here." Both books, which were self-published and available on Amazon.ca, are written in rhyme. "It’s different and kids like it," she said. "When I was young, I loved books that rhymed. I would remember better when I heard it." Shepherd has two other children’s books in the works set for release next year, which deal with the loss of a pet and a young boy struggling with his sexuality. "I know someone is going to be healed through these books," she said. "That’s my only goal."

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Got a desire to improve transit along with the charisma and organizing chops to guide a grassroots advocacy organization with a membership in the thousands? You could be the next executive director for TTCriders. Over the last three years, the group has made quite the name for itself concocting provocative awareness and social media campaigns in its endless mission to highlight the toll on transit riders caused by inadequate transit funding and spiralling fares. With current executive director Jessica Bell having already announced her candidacy for the NDP in the next provincial election, it’s time to find a replacement, she told Metroland Media Toronto. "We’re looking for someone with organizing skills, and creativity and passion to bring to the ta-
ble," said Bell, who will run as an NDP in the new provincial riding of University - Rosedale. "Our preference is someone who’s already a volunteer for TTCriders, but we’re definitely looking beyond the membership." Under the leadership of Bell, TTCriders attracted frequent media interest for its theatrical awareness campaigns which often heaped ridicule on elected officials. Mayor John Tory and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne were frequent targets, depicted as transit villains for failing to adequately fund the TTC’s operations along with former Ontario transportation minister Glen Murray and received an "honour" in 2014 from TTCriders members dressed as sardines to highlight the fish-in-a-tin conditions of overcrowded TTC service. During Bell’s tenure, the group linked up with like-minded leftleaning and prolabour groups, organizing pro-
tests and disrupting transit board meetings. With Bell poised to move on from what she calls the best job she’s ever had, the group is now on the search for a replacement, who specializes in fundraising as well as campaigning and outreach to a membership estimated at 10,000. The contract term is for nine months to start but could become a more permanent role depending on how Bell fares in the 2018 election. According to the group, the position will begin in October and candidates should have a minimum of four years’ experience working in a nonprofit, labour union or political party. Regardless of who is eventually chosen to succeed her, Bell promised TTCriders will continue to campaign and advocate for Toronto public transit. "We’re just starting to build our power," she said. The deadline for applications is Friday, Aug. 25.

“My recent Ad in the August 3rd Guardian for the Civic long weekend open houses had an amazing turnout. People actually came in carrying the Ad in their hands. Quite surprising especially for a long weekend. Over the course of the weekend we had over 14 groups of people who responded from the Ad, which is quite a few for a condo. My clients and I were just thrilled. Some are even talking offers. I’m so glad I decided to run an Ad in the Guardian.

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com A nature enthusiast hasn’t given up the fight against a city project to pave a one-kilometre trail along the Etobicoke Creek at Eglinton Avenue West on the border of Mississauga. Douglas Counter, a lifelong central Etobicoke resident, has visited the secluded creek ravine "as a sanctuary and a spiritual retreat" for 40 years, and fears the project will destroy that experience for him and others. Counter sent Etobicoke Centre Coun. Stephen Holyday, who represents the area, a 520-signature petition on Aug. 1. It calls on the city to halt construction, and to move the planned trail to the top of the creek ravine plateau to "protect and preserve as a natural oasis" the creek ravine below. "The community loves that place. It’s a shared asset. People don’t want to lose it," Counter said. "As far as I’m concerned, it’s never too late to try (to effect change). People who signed the petition are outraged the trail is being paved over and trees being taken out." Construction is already underway on a 1.2-kilometre long, three-metre wide, multi-use asphalt trail to replace the existing trail’s dirt and gravel footpath. Toronto and Region Conservation is undertaking the project to build a buttress to further prevent erosion of the creek wall, and

replace lost trees. The city wants to pave the trail as a linkage to Toronto’s cycling infrastructure. Holyday said in an interview Friday because Toronto City Council approved the project, he has no power to stop it. Counter noted he routinely sees great blue heron, white-tailed deer, mink,
beaver and red-tailed hawks along the trail, a favourite spot of nature enthusiasts. "If you’re going through a natural area, it should be a different kind of trail, not one where people go 90 miles an hour on a bike," said Counter, a lifelong cyclist who has never driven a car. "I support cycling infra-
I make my living as a writer. I moved to Tapestry, because it made sense to me. My day-to-day necessities are taken care of, and I can devote more time to doing what I love. structure. But I support it in a place that will not harm environmental assets." A Ministry of Environment spokesperson confirmed the project is pre-approved under the municipal class environmental assessment, meaning no environmental assessment is required. Holyday said he had an
hour-long conversation with Counter. "Can we try to find something together," Holyday said Friday. "Unfortunately, as far as I tried, we’re at an irreconcilable point. Mr. Counter is talking about wanting a nature reserve there." Counter said his conversation with Holyday on July

Above, nature advocate Douglas Counter walks along the Etobicoke Creek path east of Eglinton Avenue, area he’s fighting to stop from development from the city. But, his 500-name petition seems to have fallen on deaf ears as, left, work on the Etobicoke Creek North trail project has begun.
18 prompted the petition. Holyday had not replied to the petition by Guardian deadline, Counter said. Counter and Holyday also seem far apart on the project’s accessibility. The city states on its project website that the trail has been designed to comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and will be a "relatively flat" trail. Shawn Dillon, the city’s acting manager of cycling infrastructure and programs, said in an interview in June "with greater access to this natural environment, there will be more users." Counter argued if the city intends to make the trail more accessible, it won’t be for people in wheelchairs and walkers. The nearest parking lot is almost 1.7 kilometres away, of which 0.3 kilometres is on the road. "I’d love people with mobility issues to have access to this space," Counter said. "But in its current configuration, how do they get there?" Holyday said he doubted few people in wheelchairs would go there, and that West Deane Park is an alternative. "I don’t think there will be many people who are going to drive there in a wheelchair and go there to roll through the creek," Holyday said. "It will be access for my five-year-old son on his bike if it’s an asphalt surface with a managed slope. People can ride bikes or simply walk it."

York U. clinic offers support for survivors of abuse York University has officially partnered with a downtown counselling clinic to offer direct services for its community members who have experienced abuse. York University’s sexual violence response office has teamed up with the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic to provide enhanced access to personal counselling services for community members who disclose sexual violence experienced while they have been registered and/or employed at the university. In a recent release, Deb-
bie Hansen, executive director of community support and services at the university, said the partnership formalizes the relationship with the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic. The partnership resulted, in part, from York’s commitment to expand support for sexual violence survivors, which was also included in the university’s sexual violence policy released in December 2016. The Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, located near Bathurst and College streets, will pro-
vide access to personal counselling for up to 10 one-hour sessions to each community member. The community member and clinic counsellor will be able to choose to conduct counselling sessions at the clinic’s location or on York’s campus. Prior to the partnership, York community members could access support services from the clinic, but would have to go through the clinic’s intake and evaluation process. Now, those seeking services will be referred directly to the clinic.
