Curtis Murray, 25, was arrested by the Provincial Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement unit in Mississauga Monday at 5:45 p.m., just hours after police held a news conference to announce that warrants for he and his brother, 29-yearold Corey Murray, had been issued in connection with Seraphine’s March 21 shooting death. At Monday afternoon’s media briefing at 23 Division, Homicide Det. Tam Bui said that Seraphine – a recent immigrant from St. Lucia – was shot down out-

side of 44 Willowridge Dr. at around 2 a.m. while simply walking from one friend’s home to another after a night of playing video games.

“I can tell you his only mistake...was walking from one apartment where a friend lived to another, while there was these two predators in

the parking lot,” Bui said.

Bui said Seraphine had no criminal history, nor any ties to gangs or his alleged killers.

“We have not been able to form any connection whatsoever between these two offenders and Trevor,” he added. “These are 29-year-old

hardened criminals that have done federal jail time, and Trevor was a 17-year-old kid.

He was a boy.”

Bui described Curtis Murray, who has since been arrested, as a Brampton resident with a long criminal record for assault with a weapon, sexual assault, extortion, possession of property obtained by crime, theft under, robbery, assault and fail to comply. He was on a community sentence order for a recent conviction out of the Brampton courthouse at the time of his arrest.

His brother Corey Murray, meanwhile, is a federal inmate parolee wanted on a both a parole violation and on various warrants from the Peel Region Police, who has been “on the lam” since March 2014, Bui said.

At the time of the press conference, Bui said police

had received “credible information” that both murder suspects might be attempting to flee the country.

In addition to information about the Murray brothers’ current whereabouts, investigators are also still appealing to the public to come forward with any items purchased at a Block Sale that took place at 44 Willowridge Dr. on March 20 – items Bui said are now considered evidence in Seraphine’s murder.

“The items that were sold are material in the overall narrative of the homicide – why it occurred, what lead up to it, the events that transpired over several days,” Bui said, declining to comment further.

Countdown to Pan Am Games Y

esterday marked the start of the 100-day countdown to this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. Part of the celebrations held to mark the occasion at the Athletes’ Village in the West Donlands included a citizenship court for 100 new Canadians, including North York boxer Arthur Biyarslanov who will be taking part in the Games.

The past month has seen enthusiasm for the Games begin to build across not only the Greater Toronto Area, but the province and country as well.

The March announcement of the Pan Am Games Torch Relay, which starts May 30, will see the Games’ torch visit communities across Canada before settling in to tour Toronto’s neighbourhoods just prior to the opening of the Games on July 10.

A number of high-profile athletic events in the city are also helping raise excitement.

The Swim Canada trials to select the members of the Canadian our view team that will take part in the Pan Am Games are taking place Approach at Scarborough’s CIBC Pan Am/ Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and generates Field House through Saturday. excitement This meet will feature Canada’s top swimmers. Last week, the Scarborough pool hosted the Can-Am ParaSwimming Championships, which helped select the members of the Canadian team to take part in August’s Parapan Am Games. Both these events are examples of the many legacies the Games will leave Toronto.

As well last week, residents could take in some of the world’s top wheelchair basketball teams at the Americas Challenge at the Mattamy Centre. That tourney saw the Canadian men’s team, the defending Olympic gold medal champs, in action at the court they will compete on in the Parapan Am Games. The Mattamy Centre will also host the Pan Am Games basketball, which should see a very strong Canadian men’s team including some top young NBA players from our country.

There’s lots to get excited about as the Games approach.

Mayor John Tory’s fortunes lie in hands of city’s provincial and federal cousins

I

t may well be that when all the accounts are in, the success or failure of Mayor John Tory’s debut term as mayor will be decided by factors entirely beyond his control.

To a degree this is so with most political leaders.

A moribund federal government can be buoyed by a robust economy; a competent provincial government, sunk by a collapse in the markets.

And a mayor, particularly in a city like Toronto, really succeeds or fails based on the actions of both of those levels of government.

If goodwill flows from above, it will also rise from the electorate. Of course, a smart mayor can make lemonade with a stack of lemons from unfriendly governments.

But Mayor Tory has through both the city’s circumstance and his own

Firstly, Toronto has great and immediate needs for moneys beyond its means.

The Spadina subway extension is need of $150 million more in order to be finished, and neither the province nor the federal government has shown any indication of willingness to assist with the overrun.

dollars from the provincial and federal governments if it is to move ahead with Tory’s SmartTrack plan. Toronto really did need some $86 million this year, to balance its budget, and didn’t get it.

Tory is putting everything – literally everything – on his ability to work with Liberals provincially, and nominally Conservatives federally, and do so well enough to cause them to let these billions of dollars flow.

Tory believes it’s a good bet. Since before he even joined the race for mayor, Tory’s biggest selling point has been his ability to sell the city to a blue-chip Rolodex of government and

business contacts.

But if in a year or so nobody’s buying, Tory may have to do things that violate his other electionyear brand: that of a fiscally conservative business leader who is unwilling to burden taxpayers with more taxes and fees.

If he does those things – which is to say, looks at additional revenue sources like tolls or a sales tax – then he might be able to fulfill at least a portion of his agenda.

But for people who voted for Tory in 2014, will the shift be acceptable enough to come back and support him for a second term? Tory really does need the federal and provincial government to listen. His fate is in their hands.

Furniture Bank launching workshop program to teach furniture repair

Carpenters, cabinetmakers, upholsterers and designers wanted to help train participants TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com A registered charity that provided furniture to nearly 5,500 people in need last year is putting a call out to finishing carpenters, cabinetmakers, upholsterers and designers to expand its mission’s reach.

Furniture Bank will soon launch its furniture workshop program at its Etobicoke warehouse and showroom on Connell Court near Horner and Evans avenues.

There, participants in its Leg Up employment program will train in furniture repair, upholstery and woodworking.

“When we receive furniture with a blemish, tear, rip or wobbly leg, we would not give it to clients,” said Dan Kershaw, Furniture Bank executive director, explaining the idea behind the workshop.

“The intent is it is another social enterprise. We have a long history of training and hiring people with barriers to employment who need that extra patience and time to transition to full-time employment here or elsewhere.”

Furniture Bank’s workshop is expected to launch this month with funding from Mackenzie Financial and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

In July, phase two of the program will hire instructors, expected to include an upholsterer and a carpenter.

Tanya Rausch, 27, is the workshop’s first participant.

A graduate of George Brown College’s construction for women program, Rausch recently saved a large, round donated oak dining table from landfill by fixing its legs.

Now it will go to someone in need.

she said.

Paul Farrar, Furniture Bank’s director of operations, said the furniture workshop benefits clients, and volunteers, like Rausch.

“If someone in here could train her to do more, she’d love it,” he said of Rausch. “It would help her in her goal to do design work.”

Already, the workshop is loaded with horses, lathes, a bandsaw and table saw, as well as commercial sewing machines.

Furniture Bank provides gently used furniture donations to 20 to 25 Greater Toronto Area (GTA) families a day; refugees, Canadian newcomers, people coming out of homelessness and women escaping abusive homes.

Its 30,000-square-foot warehouse and showroom is packed to the rafters with sofas, tables, mattresses – Sleep Country donates mattresses weekly – dressers, lamps, TVs, stereos, housewares, and everything in between.

Some 80 social service agency partners referred clients in need to the charity.

There, clients use an iPad to select furniture from a computerized inventory, and

make a small donation for its delivery.

Every 48 to 72 hours, the warehouse will be cleaned out of its inventory, Farrar reported.

“Our clients are looking for a table to eat at, a sofa and a bed. We have basically everything they need to set up an apartment,” he said.

“Four walls don’t make a home.”

Furniture donors across the GTA are charged a pickup fee based on the value Furniture Bank applies to each donated item.

The donor is then issued a tax receipt, usually for many times more than the donation’s worth.

People often ask why Furniture Bank charges a pickup fee, Kershaw said.

He said he explains the fees pay about half the charity’s

operating costs. It has 38 full-time and two part-time employees, a warehouse and offices to heat and light and 1,000 volunteers.

It is the largest social enterprise in Toronto, and among the largest in Canada.

“Generally, what a donor pays for our service is the same as they’d pay to a junk company to remove it,” Kershaw said.

“With us, the furniture is still removed. Donors receive a tax receipt, and they change a life. It’s a three-fer.”

Currently, Furniture Bank serves 20 clients a day, but it could serve as many as 60 such is the need.

Furniture Bank’s goal – to serve between 7,500 to 10,000 clients this year.

If approved, the doctor will write a “medical document,” akin to a prescription. Patients may then see a counselor for assistance navigating the application process to register with a licensed provider.

Typically, a doctor will write a medical document for medical cannabis use for three months. Then a patient must attend for a follow-up appointment.

All services are provided free-of-charge.

Pain is overwhelmingly the health issue for which CCC’s patients turn to medical cannabis, he said.

inflammatory arthritis is an issue for about 60 per cent of our patients.

“Depression is common, as is anxiety. Some people with MS (multiple sclerosis).

Medical cannabis helps with MS’ spasticity. We’ve seen a couple pediatric uses for autism or seizure disorders that really helped these kids.”

Levy said people who seek the use of medical cannabis often have exhausted other, more-conventional medical treatments and therapies.

Approved patients receive their cannabis in the mail, often within a week, Levy reported.

The medical cannabis landscape in Canada changed in recent years.

In 2013, the Canadian government replaced its medical marijuana legislation with the ‘Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations’.

It took effect a year ago.

Under the new regulations, Canadian doctors replaced Health Canada as the agent issuing medical cannabis prescriptions. Also, qualifying Canadians must now purchase their medical cannabis from a licensed producer.

Previously, an approved patient could grow their own cannabis or appoint someone to grow it.

Health Canada recommends medical cannabis be vaporized, not smoked. Most patients are prescribed one to three grams of cannabis a day, Health Canada reported, citing peer-reviewed scientific and medical literature.

Despite the new regulations, stigma continues to surround medical cannabis use, Levy said.

“The perception that it is hippie potheads still exists insidiously in society,” he said. “But it’s not legal weed.

It’s actual medicine.”

The Etobicoke clinic is expected to see an esti-

mated 20 patients a day, Levy estimated, fewer than its Toronto clinic, but perhaps more than its St. Catharines’ operation.

CCC founders chose Etobicoke due to its proximity to Mississauga, which is underserved, he said. Also, it is home to many people in their 40s and 50s with chronic pain who may be potential patients, he added.

The clinic will ser ve residents of west Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Oakville.

Levy stressed all services provided by CCC are free.

“There are absolutely no fees associated with any of our clinics,” he said.

“We decided that when we founded CCC. People have to pay for cannabis, which can be $6 to $7 a gram. That cost is already prohibitive for some people.”

Historic Mary Reid house to receive Ontario Heritage Act designation Toronto City Council passes motion without debate TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Mary Reid House will be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Toronto City Council passed a motion on Tuesday, to designate the three-quarter-centuryold property at 4200 Eglinton Ave. W. The property’s “cultural heritage value” meets criteria for municipal heritage designation, a January city planning report stated.

Born in Yorkshire, England in 1874, Mary “May” Jane Todd immigrated in 1880 to Canada with her parents, James and Mary Todd in 1880. Her husband, Randolph “Ralph” Reid was born in Bedford, England and came to Canada in 1881 with his parents, Thomas and Anne Reid. The two families bought adjacent land for market gardening in the Humber Bay area.

The Todds owned land on the southwest and southeast corners of Park Lawn and Berry roads. The Reids bought land on the east side of Park Lawn Road immediately south of the Todds’ property.

Mary Todd and Randolph Reid married in Mimico in 1895. The Reids bought a lot north on the west side of Prince Edward Drive South. Today, that street is called Reid Manor,

named by their son, Leonard Roger.

In 1925, Mary Reid bought the 4200 Eglinton Ave. W. property for $3,000 as an investment to give in future to her son.

In 1937, she transferred half the land to her son, Randolph Calvin. In 1939, an unfinished house valued at $1,300 stood there. In 1941, she transferred the rest of the lot to Calvin, and the entire east half to her other son, Leonard Roger. Calvin bought out Leonard’s half in 1950.

In 1987, Calvin’s widow, Frances Maud Reid, inherited the property. She sold it two years later after 60 years of family ownership. In 1990, the City of Etobicoke purchased the property. In 2006, the property became listed on the city’s heritage register.

City considering apartment development for north of Humbertown CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Humber Valley Village area residents still reeling from the Humbertown Plaza “debacle” expressed anger and frustration this week at the city’s consideration of yet another redevelopment proposal they say is “too big, too tall and too dense” for their quiet, established neighbourhood.

“I’m sure most of you who went through the Humbertown debacle will understand my feelings tonight of wanting to either burst into tears or stamp my feet with rage,” longtime resident Pat Forbes said at the March 26 city-hosted community consultation meeting to discuss the proposed redevelopment of St. Steven’s Court, located just a few hundred metres north of Humbertown Plaza.

“We have gone through this already – with the traffic, the environmental studies, the tree canopy. We have gone through this with Humbertown. Why do we have to do it again?”

This latest redevelopment proposal in question was submitted to the city planning department by Elia Corp. back in May 2013, and requires both zoning bylaw amendments and approval of rental housing demolition and conversion applications for 289 and 291 The Kingsway and 1 to 7 St. Stevens Crt. If ultimately approved, the proposed redevelopment would see the retention of the 17-storey rental building at 289 The Kingsway, while the five existing 3.5-storey apartment buildings on St. Steven’s Court would be torn down to make way for the construction of six new residential buildings, ranging in

height from six to 16 stories and containing a total of 603 new units.

Those proposed new residential buildings would include: • an 11-storey rental replacement building containing 162 units; • a 16-storey condominium building containing 142 units; • a 12-storey condominium building containing 129 units, attached at-grade to an eightstorey condo with 79 units; • and two attached, sixstorey seniors buildings – a 39-unit condo and a 52-unit rental building – that will provide varying levels of “assisted-living” supports such as meals and housekeeping services.

“We really are trying to provide a broad spectrum of housing opportunities on this site,” Quadrangle Architects principle Les Klein said at the meeting, speaking on behalf of the developer. “These are all development options we think are very important.”

The current buildings on St. Steven’s Court, added Klein, “really are reaching the end of their useful lives” and need to be replaced.

“We have a firm that specializes in renovation and rehabilitation of buildings... and unfortunately, despite the fact that they were very interesting and innovative when they were built, the structural systems are pretty much not able to be rehabilitated,” he said, echoing the claim of a resident of 1 St. Steven’s Crt., who told attendees at last week’s meeting “we do need a new building.”

Many in attendance at Thursday night’s meeting, however, disagreed – some alleging the buildings had been left to fall into their current state of disrepair by an owner with big redevelopment in mind.

Etobicoke Centre Councillor John Campbell empathized with residents wary of the St. Steven’s redevelopment plans.

“I can certainly appreciate how many of you may feel that your views will fall on deaf ears after what hap-

pened with the Humbertown development. I felt very much the same way, but I think what it’s important to bear in mind is that these are two very different developments in two very different areas,” he said.

Humbertown Plaza, he explained, is located on a site designated mixed use – a designation that allows for much more extensive development under the Official Plan than an “apartment neighbourhood”, which is what the St. Steven’s properties are designated.

“So, in regard to this particular area, I am supportive of some aspects of the redevelopment. Anyone who’s familiar with St. Steven’s Court, I think, will agree that those buildings need at least a renovation, and at most, a thoughtful, measured redevelopment,” Campbell added.

The Humber Valley Village Residents’ Association (HVVRA), meanwhile, requested the city hold off making any decision’s about the Elia Corp. proposed redevelopment for St. Steven’s Court until the results of a city-mandated Site Area Specific Plan (SASP) for the apartment neighbourhoods to the north of Humbertown Plaza are released in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The Elia Corp. proposal, said HVVRA president Ian Ihnatowycz represents “massive growth” and therefore presents a whole host of concerns.

“It also raises concerns about precedents being set for ad hoc development proposals that will inevitably be presented in future; and finally, it raises concerns about the combined synergistic impact of multiple projects of other large developments that have already been approved but not even constructed yet...” he said.

Man wanted in 22 Division This week’s Catch 22 most wanted is 35-year-old Therar Hussein.

Hussein is wanted by police in south Etobicoke’s 22 Division on three counts of assault with a weapon and one charge each o f t h re a t e n Therar Hussein bodily harm and mischief under $5,000.

Child suffers serious burns in apartment fire Four adults and three children – one suffering “serious” injuries – were transported to hospital following a two-alarm fire at a south Etobicoke apartment building Tuesday.

The blaze broke out at 230 Lake Promenade, near Long Branch Park in south Etobicoke, at around 10 a.m.

Toronto EMS spokesperson Kim McKinnon confirmed that paramedics transported one child with serious – but not life-threatening – burns to a trauma centre, while two additional children and four adults were also taken to hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation.

Toronto Fire Capt. Stephan Powell said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Supt. Ron Taverner of 23 Division said police were called to Beckles’ home at 163 Jamestown Cres. just after 11 p.m. after receiving a call for sounds of gunshots in the area.

“Upon our arrival we found him on the ground and he was transported to hospital, where he succumbed to gunshot injuries,” Taverner said in a phone interview with The Guardian Tuesday morning.

Taverner said police believe that Beckles was the intended target of the unknown shooter or shooters, although they do not yet know why.

“Mr. Beckles is hearing impaired – he has a disability – and unfortunately, we feel that it was a targeted shooting, but we don’t have a motive at this time,” he said.

“It’s still early on in the investigation.”

Police, he added, have collected Toronto Community Housing Corp (TCHC) surveillance footage from around the scene of the shooting, and are going through that footage now to see if any suspects can be identified.

“They may or may not have been captured on video. We’re not sure at this point,” Taverner said. “Obviously, we’re appealing for witnesses to come forward.”

Police are also looking into a black car that was in the area at the time of the shooting.

Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud officials and guests braved the pouring rain and biting wind to celebrate the construction of the new Richview on Clement Road in the Martin Grove Road and Eglinton Avenue West area.

The French Catholic School Board in south-central Ontario purchased the former Richview Junior School, closed in 1982, from the Toronto District School Board to manage student overpopulation at its other Etobicoke elementary school, École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Marguerited’Youville.

Ministry of education funding enabled construction of the school.

“We had no room to accommodate more students at Sainte-Marguerite. It was in our mind to build a new school here,” Réjean Sirois, the French Catholic School Board’s director of education, said in an interview.

“The land is wonderful, and the school is well-located. Our student population is growing.

There is a demand for French Catholic education.”

Currently, 45 students in junior and senior kindergarten attend the existing school.

At the celebration, about 20 young students carried colourful posters depicting “mon école” and sang a song.

Once the school is constructed, the former public school will be torn down, Sirois said. The land may be used for parking, as well as a soccer pitch.

“It’s important socially and culturally to be bringing to your city and its population the strength of French Catholic education in your neighbourhood,” said Marcel Levesque, the board’s vice-chair.

Fo r m e r m a yo r a n d Etobicoke North Councillor Rob Ford lauded the board for building a school for students “looking to learn and preserve French language and

heritage.

“There is a strong demand for a French Catholic school in this area,” he said.

Board president Mélinda Chartrand agreed.

“The enviable reputation that French-language Catholic education in Ontario enjoys is reaffirmed year after year,” said Chartrand in a statement.

“New school projects, like the one we are inaugurating today, respond to the most important demand of parents who want to raise their children (in a Catholic Frenchlanguage environment).”

Parents will be consulted on renaming the school once it opens in September 2016.

The new school will serve 350 students from junior kindergarten to Grade 6.

We invite you to join us at two upcoming public meetings where you can comment on the current phase of the Environmental Assessment on the future of the Gardiner Expressway East.

The Study Waterfront Toronto and the City of Toronto are jointly carrying out the Gardiner Expressway / Lake Shore Boulevard Reconfiguration Environmental Assessment (EA) and Integrated Urban Design Study.

The EA will determine the future of the Gardiner Expressway East and Lake Shore Boulevard East, from approximately Jarvis Street to approximately Leslie Street. The study area for the EA is displayed on the map below.

The four alternative solutions that have been considered to date are: • Maintain the elevated expressway; • Improve the urban fabric while maintaining the existing expressway;

• Replace with a new above-or-below grade expressway; and, • Remove the elevated expressway and build a new boulevard.

In the last phase of the EA, the evaluation of the alternative solutions concluded that the remove option best met the evaluation criteria. Following direction from the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee of Toronto City Council, the upcoming public meeting will share the results of the following work: 1.

Review the remove option under the EA process to mitigate concerns about traffic congestion.

2.

Prepare an additional hybrid option that combines the maintain and replace components to preserve expressway linkage and functionality between the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway, and evaluates it against the EA criteria and the following: • Transportation functionality; • Public transit components; •

Impacts on key economic sectors;

Environmental impact; and

•

Cost benefit;

•

Neighbourhood growth and compatibility

•

Future land use considerations;

looking forward to the competition. Plus there is a players dinner to attend before the championship,” said an excited Vanessa, the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame’s athlete of the month for March.

Vanessa started golf by playing mini putt at the age of two and a half and had her first set of clubs at three years old.

Now, at only eight years of age she is a seasoned competitor and traveller. She started playing the Canadian Junior Golf Association tours at age five and has played twice at US Kids World Championship including a trip to Pinehurst Resort.

She has been to the Callaway World Junior Golf Championship in San Diego and teed it up at Doral and PGA National in Florida as part of the First Tee Program in the United States.

Vanessa trains three hours each Saturday with her coach including some ping pong to work on her eye-hand coordination and then three nights a week to practice what they worked on during the coaching session at the golf dome with her father.

The best part of her game is making long putts; she drives the ball 150 yards and her best score for nine holes is 31.

Her favourite player is LPGA star Lexi Thompson and when asked what she would serve at the Champions Dinner at Augusta she replied: Kraft Dinner and a giant chocolate cupcake.

“Vanessa sure has a great game for such a young girl.

She enjoys competing which will really help her win tournaments. I am very excited for her upcoming competition at Augusta National and wish her the best of luck,” said Joanne Noble, Chair of the Board for the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame.

Vanessa Borovilos: Etobicoke Athlete of the Month For an eight-year-old, Vanessa Borovilos has an impressive collection of trophies and medals, but the one that earned an invite to Augusta National Golf Club and the 2015 Masters is extra special.

The St. George’s Public School Grade 3 student from Etobicoke is one of three Canadians between the ages of seven and 15 who will tee it up in the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship this Sunday, April 5 before the famous Masters Tournament takes over the course April 6 to 12.

The youth competition is jointly run by the Masters Tournament, the United States Golf Association and the PGA of America.

Vanessa won two qualifiers at different courses in Michigan in June and August to advance to the regional final in September at Prestwick Village GC in Highland Michigan. There she won the overall title in her age group with victories in chipping and putting.

Humber Arboretum receives Weston Family grant CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A recently announced Weston Family Parks Challenge grant totalling $124,405 will support Humber Arboretum’s outdoor education programming and wetland habitat improvements at Col. Sam Smith Park.

The grant brings together Humber Arboretum, the City of Toronto, Toronto Region Conservation Authority ( TRCA), Friends of Sam Smith Park (FOSS), Citizens Concerned About the Future of the Etobicoke Waterfront (CCFEW) and Humber College to connect people to nature.

Arboretum Co-ordinator Jimmy Vincent said the main project will be rebuilding the park’s wellused wetland lookout structure, which sometimes doubles as an outdoor classroom for some of the Arboretum’s outdoor education programming.

“The outlook has been a pretty popular feature in the wetland for a really, really long time, but it was in really rough shape, so it’s definitely the biggest part of the project,” he said of the structure’s rebuild, which comes with a price

While the Weston Family grant is set to cover $100,000 of that cost, the city will pitch in the additional $75,000 .

The lookout reconstruction is expected to be complete in time for the city’s annual Bird Festival at the park May 23.

The Weston Family grant also includes $9,805 in funding to be invested in Humber Arboretum’s outdoor education programming, which, thanks to Humber College’s donation of classroom space, Vincent said drew more than 1,700 students to Col. Sam Smith Park last

year alone.

“We use that money to offer subsidies to classes – a $4-a-student discount from our regular price of $12.50. So, with that subsidy, students will pay just $8.50 for our full-day program, which is definitely a really good deal. And we also got $1,805 for materials to run the programs down there.”

The Weston Family grant also allows for enhancement to Col. Sam Smith Park’s habitat by earmarking $5,000 for wetland plants, another $6,000 for native trees and shrubs to be planted in the fall and $400 to install a permanent bird feeding station. For their part, the TRCA recently undertook a turtle basking log installation at Col. Sam Smith Park, using ash trees taken down around the city due to infestations of the emerald ash borer. The $20,000 project was conducted and funded by the TRCA independent of the Weston Family grant. The remaining portions of the Weston Family grant will go toward: $1,000 in funding for the replacement of the interpretive entrance sign; $1,000 toward the purchase of bird feeder kits; $900 to FOSS to update its website and brochure; and $300 toward CCFEW’s bird checklist.

Young Etobicoke army cadet tackles training trek near Thunder Bay Etobicoke’s Rebecca Verlaan spent her March Break tackling the Ultimate Army Cadet Challenge – a unique training opportunity near Thunder Bay. A warrant officer with 709 Toronto Signals Cadet Corps, Verlaan was one of just 10 army cadets who participated in the challenge’s inaugural Storm the Giant Regional Expedition, a six-day trek through Sleeping Giant Provincial Park.

Survival training The expedition included two days of cross country ski touring, a day of snowshoeing on ice, a day of winter survival training and winter survival scenarios, and two days of backcountry snowshoeing.

The Army Cadet Program is a national youth development program that “provides tools and activities to prepare youth for the transition to adulthood by instilling the values of fitness, leadership, citizenship, challenge and fun.”

TTC gives subway closures a rest Fans of weekend-spanning subway closures will be dismayed to learn the TTC isn’t planning any more for its ongoing signal upgrade construction.

The rest of us however can look forward to the end of multi-day construction delays needed for converting Line 1’s antiquated signal system.

In fact, the TTC thinks it can reduce the amount of required closures for the upgrades by half thanks to a “revised strategy” which according to TTC spokesperson Mike Palmer entails shifting contracts and work related to the $559-million infrastructure project.

It will be four years – at least – before the work is complete.
