Food co-op planned for Stonegate plaza WILL KOBLENSKY etg@insidetoronto.com Stonegate Plaza’s redevelopment won’t feature a supermarket in its condo and retail space, but it could house the West End Food Co-op or a similar, non-profit group. West-end councillors unanimously passed a motion Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Etobicoke York Community Council pushing ahead developer VANDYK’s plans

of turning a 1950s plaza into three high-rises and a retail building. A multi-use private road will weave between the structures while a green space featuring a splash pad is planned as the centrepiece for what the developer dubs “The Shoppes at Stonegate”. The item must still be approved by City Council on March 10. Community activists won many amenities they campaigned for, including Stonegate Community >>>food, page 14
Townhouses approved in Islington, Norseman area West-end councillors gave the green light to zoning bylaw amendments that will pave the way for a mixed-use development on the site of the old Sunbeam building in Ward 5 this week. The application unanimously approved by Etobicoke York Community Council on Tuesday, Feb. 23 proposes the development of 176 townhouse units and a 4,024-square-metre, 25-unit industrial building on the site at 1030 and 1040 Islington Ave. at Norseman Street. Also approved was a draft plan of a subdivision that will create five blocks and three new public streets through the residential
area on the easterly portion of the site, one of which will provide a connection between Islington and Norseman. In exchange, the owner of the site will be required to enter into a Section 37 agreement with the city worth $325,000: $315,000 allocated to streetscape improvements along The Queensway between Islington and Royal York Road, and $10,000 toward capital improvements to Fairfield Park. For the full planning report, go to bit.ly/1Txr1H5 The matter will go before Toronto City Council for final approval on March 30 and 31.
