New 10-minute service requires split at Humber Loop, says TTC TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The TTC increased service daily on Toronto’s iconic 501 Queen streetcar line to every 10 minutes or less all day effective this month, welcome news to some south Etobicoke riders who reported wait times of up to 45 minutes in the past.

But the TTC’s decision to split the 501 route at the

Humber Loop from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily has left one south Etobicoke rider wanting.

Among the 501 route changes, the TTC recently announced a “temporary” route split at Humber Loop on the line, which runs west from Neville Park in the Beach to the Long Branch Loop.

That means riders headed either west or east of Humber Loop would get off their street-

car, which would turn around, to board another to continue on their route. The wait time for the next streetcar is now 10 minutes or less.

Jennifer Mozetic has lived in Humber Bay Shores for 10 years. She takes the 501 daily to commute back and forth to work downtown.

Mozetic expressed confusion about the temporary nature of the TTC’s route split. She

reported four TTC 501 streetcar operators have told her the change will be permanent.

That concerns Mozetic, who like much of the 501 streetcar’s ridership west of the Humber Loop, is travelling only a few more stops to home and would prefer not to switch streetcars.

“It’s just brutal on the way home,” Mozetic said. “They make all the people get off a full streetcar. I’m faster walking home the 12 minutes than waiting for another streetcar.

“I’d get it if the TTC did this 10 years ago. But it’s crazy with all the condos here now. It will be crazier in two years (once all the approved Humber Bay condos are built).”

The TTC added three 501 transfer-free 501 streetcars in the morning rush leaving Long Branch Loop at 7:19, 7:29 and 7:39, which Mozetic takes and confirmed travel through Humber Loop direct to downtown.

Woodbine Racetrack paid solemn tribute to the 43 horses killed in a barn fire at Classy Lane Stables with a special memorial Thursday, Jan. 7 night.

Many of the dozens of standardbred horses lost during Monday, Jan. 4’s blaze at the Puslinch-area stables (located northwest of Milton, near Guelph) were regulars on high-stakes racing scenes at Woodbine, as well as Mohawk and Flamboro Downs racetracks.

Their loss, said Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) CEO Jim Lawson, leaves “a deep and dramatic impact on Ontario’s horse racing community.”

“As a horse person, I can imagine how difficult a time it is for those that lost horses, who are like members of the family. It is heartbreaking,” he said in a statement.

“Our deepest sympathies are with everyone impacted by this tragedy.”

The Woodbine tribute, which saw the racetrack’s Thursday, Jan. 7 night racing card dedicated to the fallen horses, began at 6:50 p.m. with a four-minute video presentation of the fallen horses, followed immediately by minute of silence in remembrance.

Flags at Woodbine were also flown at half-staff last Thursday night, as they will

continue to be through the conclusion of the Saturday night program of racing.

Ask Yvan Baker how he’d characterize the 36 individuals, groups and organizations honoured at his annual Community Recognition Awards over the weekend and he’ll tell you they’re “inspirational.”

The Etobicoke Centre MPP recognized the award’s 2015 recipients in a ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 10, shining a light on local residents’ selfless contributions in four different categories: outstanding volunteer service to the community, outstanding volunteer service to seniors, outstanding volunteer service to the community by youth, and outstanding service by professional staff.

“Every year we recognize 30 or more recipients, but there are hundreds – if not thousands – of people in our community who do this type of work. We should be able to hold this event for decades to come, and never come close to even scratching the surface of the wonderful work that’s happening here in Etobicoke Centre,” Baker said in an interview with The Guardian on Monday.

“What’s so amazing to me is that there are so many people who have been volunteering their time to causes in the community for, in many cases, decades. And in many cases, they haven’t necessarily been recognized or thanked publicly.”

Sunday’s awards presentation – which took place at the Plast Huculak Centre as part of Baker’s second annual New Year’s Levee – were recognized for their service to seniors.

Six individuals, in fact, were singled

out for their commitment to seniors at local care facilities, including the Village of Humber Heights, the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre and Wesburn Manor, while the many volunteers who make up the transpor-

tation team at Etobicoke Services for Seniors (ESS) Support Services were also commended.

“I think that speaks to the fact that there is such a need for services for seniors, particularly in our commu-

nity,” said Baker, whose Etobicoke Centre riding is home to one of the highest percentages of senior residents per capita in the country.

“It just goes to show how important those services are to seniors and their quality of life, and what an important role volunteers play in delivering those services.”

Baker also celebrated young people for their contributions in the riding, recognizing five youth for their volunteer work: Marina Galeno and Joseph Nguyen from Michael Power/ St. Joseph High School, and Mensah Lettica, Gabriel Sobral, and Andrea Tenuta from the Village of Humber Heights.

“Instilling in our young people the importance of volunteerism and giving back to their communities is important – and the youth that we recognized (Sunday) are leaders in that – they set an example for their friends and others in the community,” he said.

This year’s Community Recognition Award recipients, Baker said, are all different ages and come from a variety of backgrounds and walks of life, but the common thread linking them all is their commitment to giving back.

“To me, this event is really about recognizing them, thanking them, making sure people know about their good work in our community, and encouraging others to follow in their footsteps and get involved, too,” he said.

ome mid-January, the post-holiday blues are in full effect as many have returned to their regular work schedule and the kids are back in school after time off.

The festivities enjoyed just a couple weeks prior are nothing but a distant memory with the focus solely on surviving the winter that is now fully upon us.

But what shouldn’t be so easily forgotten is all the goodwill Torontonians have shown throughout the Christmas season and the start of the new year.

Charitable organizations as well as individuals who have requested for donations to be given to numerous worthy causes found their pleas answered.

The numbers don’t lie.

The North York Harvest Food Bank recently announced that it has hit its Winter Food Drive goal having raised $270,000 and 250,000 pounds of food.

That’s enough to provide our view 750,000 meals to children and families in northern Toronto.

The De Sario family, who live Help those near Keele Street and Sheppard who help Avenue, just tallied how much they raised with their annual others Christmas lights display consisting of 50,000 LED lights.

Passersby opened their wallets during the month of December and the first week of January to the tune of nearly $16,000 for The Hospital for Sick Children.

Across the city, residents and non-profit organizations also gave whatever the Syrian refugees who arrived in Canada this winter needed as they began to settle into their new adopted country.

Embrace the challenge

The easy thing to do now is to feel good about what’s been achieved collectively and not think about doing anything charitable until the next holiday season.

Instead, embrace the challenge to financially give if you’re able to do so. Or donate your time or any goods to groups that might need to help the disadvantaged in your community.

For example, Soles 4 Souls Canada, https://soles4souls.org/canada/, is hosting a shoe fundraiser, accepting unwanted pairs of gently used or new shoes to give to those in need.

Extend the spirit of giving and the warm feeling it brings throughout the rest of this cold winter.

Mayor John Tory can take a lesson from Rob Ford on avoiding City of Toronto strikes Rob Ford caused his supporters a lot of grief over his term in the mayor’s office, but no one who voted for him had cause to complain about his mayoralty’s handling of labour relations.

Unlike his two predecessors, Ford got through his tenure with just one strike: a short one, of library workers. Council under Ford’s leadership went so far as to end the possibility of work stoppage at the Toronto Transit Commission, convincing the province to turn the TTC into an essential service. And through it all: no garbage strike, no inside workers’ strike, nothing to trouble Torontonians’ summer holidays an iota.

All other things being equal, this alone might have guaranteed the Ford family a key to the mayor’s office as long as they wanted. It was, after all, the discontent with the 40-day garbage strike presided

david nickle the city over by former mayor David Miller in 2009, that helped buoy Ford from his council seat to the mayoralty in 2010. The lesson – that job security for mayors and job security for garbage collectors can’t really coexist – was well-learned.

It seems as though this too is the one positive lesson Mayor John Tory has taken from Ford. Because right before Christmas, just as Ford and his deputy mayor Doug Holyday did in their day, the new team asked for a labour conciliator just weeks after negotiations between the city and its outside workers began.

This was a very effective strategy the last time the city used it. The conciliation process accelerates the timeline toward a possible

strike or lockout situation, making it impossible for the negotiators at CUPE Local 416 to time their work stoppage for the warm, potentially stinky, days of summer. That happens, and the city negotiators are under pressure from an increasingly exasperated public to settle. And politicians need to look no further than 2009 to understand the political cost of holding ground, as Miller and company did.

Would matters be any easier watching garbage pile up in parks and parking lots in a mucky, rainy March? It’s likely we’ll never find out. With half the city’s garbage collection contracted out, there is a serious disincentive for outside workers to walk off the job when first, it’s damp, and second, nobody notices.

That is likely why the city’s other major union, CUPE Local 79, held its

strike vote over the weekend. Toronto negotiators have so far not requested conciliation with its inside workers. And while they may have yet done so, as matters stood it would be easy to see a circumstance where both unions are negotiating contracts months apart from one another – so any labour disruption would only come from one element of city services and not both.

But these are defensive maneuvers for unions that are in a losing battle with their employer. If Tory and council somehow find themselves facing a strike or ordering a lockout, Ford’s reliable if often off-base criticisms of his successor will finally have some real bite.

LAMP receives Ontario Trillium Foundation grant Centre plans to create industrial kitchen in Mimico CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com LAMP Community Health Centre has been named one of 326 recipients of this year’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grants.

The south Etobicoke-based multiservice charitable organization was granted $150,000 by OTF toward the construction of a community kitchen that is estimated to impact the lives of more than 1,500 people in the community.

“Building a community kitchen as part of our program will bring great benefit to the area,” said LAMP’s executive director, Russ Ford, in an interview with The Guardian.

“LAMP has a dietician on staff and a diabetes education program, but our current facilities aren’t great. When you have a kitchen where you can actually do food demonstrations and things like that, it just makes it so much richer a program.”

Construction of the new “industrial” kitchen, which Ford said is tentatively slated for the spring, will take place off-site at the Wesley

Mimico Place redevelopment – in part due to space constraints at LAMP’s Fifth Street location, but also because LAMP has been looking to expand its operations into the Mimico area for some time now.

“We’ve looked for a location in Mimico because we know that it’s an area that needs to be served,” said Ford, noting that LAMP will be renting out some of the community space being generated by the redevelopment of the Wesley Mimico United Church.

Under that redevelopment plan, the church – at 2 Station Rd. – is slated to undergo several transformations including: a new sanctuary room for church and community events; the construction of the Amos and Louise Waites Residence, a 30-unit independent living apartment building for people aged 55 plus; and the David Hornell V.C. Centre for Community, which will contain 3,500 square feet of accessible space for community activities – including LAMP’s new commercial kitchen, complete with appliances.

The OTF announced the funding of all 326 initiatives last week alongside Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Michael Coteau, who estimated the grants will “bring positive change to nearly one million people across the province.”

“I am proud that through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, our government, is investing in the nonprofit sector and creating positive change in our province,” Coteau said in a statement. “Non-profit organizations are the heart of their communities and I know these grants will benefit people across Ontario.”

According to the OTF website, MABELLEarts was granted $170,000

over three years to support community arts programming in the Dundas Street West and Islington Avenue area of Etobicoke, involving children, youth, families and seniors.

Etobicoke’s police department boasted fewer than twenty constables during the early ‘50s It’s 1952, and traffic is light along Malton Road – now Dixon Road – as one of Etobicoke’s traffic constables watches for infractions from his seat inside one of the Township’s Ford Mainline police cars.

Amazing as it seems today, up until the 1940s, Etobicoke only had eight constables and two patrol cars for its entire area.

Driver dead following early morning single-vehicle crash on Brown’s Line CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A 42-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle collision on Brown’s Line in Etobicoke Friday after being ejected from his car.

While Const. Clint Stibbe said police are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the 5:21 a.m. collision, “what we can say is that there was no attempt to brake prior to the collision.

“That being said, we don’t

know why that was – whether it was mechanical failure or driver error,” he added.

Stibbe said the victim, a GTA man, was not wearing a seatbelt and appears to have been ejected from the vehicle when it collided into a concrete barrier in the southbound lanes of Brown’s Line, approaching Lake Shore Boulevard West.

“A seatbelt only takes one second, and it could save your life,” Stibbe advised.

“In this particular case, there was a tremendous amount of damage to the vehicle sustained, so it’s not guaranteed he would have survived the collision even if he’d worn a seatbelt, but it would have given him an extra chance.”

• Match old-growth wood. New regulations may prevent certain species of trees from being cut down. That means it can be challenging to match old wood in a home, particularly if you’re looking to maintain historical value and authenticity. Re-

Crime Stoppers has teamed up with a Canadian comic book hero to raise awareness of the crime-fighting program.

Captain Canuck, first published in 1975, will now have a secondary character called Crime Stopper.

Toronto Crime Stoppers coordinator Det. Chris Scherk said the partnership promotes the program’s message to a younger audience, which it normally doesn’t reach.

“I don’t expect them (young children) to pick up the phone and call Crime Stoppers,” he said.

“But the fact that they already know what the program is about, when they’re in a position later on in life, (they’d) be able to pick up the phone and make that call. It’ll already be entrenched.”

The partnership was announced Thursday, Jan. 7, at Toronto police headquarters where Captain Canuck repelled down the ten-storeyhigh atrium as Chief Mark Saunders, Mayor John Tory and Grade 4 students from Market Lane Junior and Senior Public School looked on.

Asked what his message to the children is, Captain Canuck said “look after each other, look after your families, and if everybody is doing the best that they can, we’ll have a safer city, and I’ll have less work to do.”

Scherk noted he had the Captain Canuck comics when he was a kid.

The Crime Stopper character will appear in three to five issues.

Saunders said the new initiative “can strike conversations in the house with parents with children on the importance of community safety, the steps that they can take to help keep their neighbourhoods safe.”

In 2015, Toronto Crime Stoppers received 8,790 tips, leading to 107 arrests, 439 charges and the seizure of more than $7.3 million in

“But I can tell you that serious crimes such as homicides, robberies, serious assaults, assaults on children have all been solved this (past) year as a result of Crime Stoppers tips.”

Since its inception in 1984, the program generated 124,947 tips, allowing police to lay 36,896 charges against 10,839 people and seize more than $312 million worth of drugs.

UberPool returns to Toronto this week Uber Canada will resume its carpooling service in Toronto this week, the company has confirmed.

UberPool was launched on a trial basis during last year’s Pan Am Games. Over the two-week period in July, fares could be split between two riders headed in the same direction. And with costs to the user ending up 30 per cent cheaper than UberX – Uber’s controversial private taxi service – it was only a matter of time before the carpool option became permanent.

UberPool will be available in wide swathes of the city, although suburban areas are largely excluded. Only two riders per ride can take advantage of the fare-splitting option.

LAYTON FERRY TERMINAL update wJACK

Waterfront Toronto will provide an update on plans to renovate the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal.

A new vision for the ferry terminal and surrounding Harbour Square Park was the focus of an international design competition held in 2015, won by a partnership made up of local architectural firms KPMB and Greenberg Consultants, and West 8 from the Netherlands.

The winning proposal

entails a terminal roof made of wood and topped by parkland – a far cry from the current concrete structure.

Waterfront Toronto will reveal an update of the winning design at a Jan. 26 meeting at the Brigantine Room in Harbourfront Centre starting at 6:30 p.m.

TO DISCUSS FUNDING at bathurst wTTCRIDERS

TTCriders will take their message of better transit funding directly to the transit commission’s customers during a public event this week.

On Friday, members of the transit advocacy group will take to Bathurst station between 1 and 3 p.m. to lobby riders about the TTC’s cash flow woes.

This month, the TTC increased cash and token fares, and the group said it is fed up with what it sees as a lack of government support.

NOTICE OF FILING OF TRANSPORTATION ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY REPORT

Queen Elizabeth Way Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study from Evans Avenue to Cawthra Road THE STUDY The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has completed a Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study to examine rehabilitation and improvement needs for the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) from Evans Avenue to Cawthra Road. The study limits extend approximately 3.5 km through the City of Mississauga (Region of Peel) and the City of Toronto.

The key features of the Recommended Plan include the following: • Rehabilitation of The West Mall ramp bridges over the Etobicoke Creek and QEW; • Replacement of the Dixie Road and Etobicoke Creek Bridges, and the Ogden Avenue Pedestrian Bridge; • Reconfiguration of the Dixie Road Interchange; • Realignment of local service roads;

• New auxiliary lanes on the QEW from Highway 427 westbound to Cawthra Road off-ramp and from Cawthra Road eastbound to a new Dixie Road off-ramp; • Localized QEW widening to maintain six basic lanes of traffic during construction.

THE PROCESS This study has followed the approved environmental planning process for Group ‘B’ projects under the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000). External agency and public consultation has taken place throughout the study.

A Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) has been prepared to document the study findings. The TESR is available for a 30-day public review period beginning January 18, 2016 at the following locations and on the study website, www.qewdixieea.ca.

“We want to study it,” he said.

“We’ll keep an eye on the route.

We’re not making the changes and then walking away from it. We want the flexibility to tweak around the edges as necessary.

“Any changes we’d make in the future would be for the better.”

Ross acknowledged the route split at Humber Loop is inconvenient.

But he said it is necessary in order to maintain the TTC’s commitment to 10-minute or less service reliability on the 501.

“We absolutely understand that making a transfer is an inconvenience. But overall, it will make the trip more reliable rather than a wait of 20 to 30 minutes. One of our goals is to reduce the number of short-turns,” Ross said.

The TTC short-turned more than 600 501 streetcars in the first week of January 2015 versus 48 last week, Ross reported. A short-turn is when a streetcar turns around before the end of the route.

The 501 Queen route is the longest streetcar route in the world, he added.

“It’s challenging because the 501 route is so long. Invariably, we’d not be able to maintain that schedule every 10 minutes because of factors beyond the TTC’s control, like traffic congestion,” Ross said when asked why the TTC doesn’t run all the 501 streetcars the entire route from Neville Park to Long Branch Loop. “(Turning some streetcars) reinstates some rigour to the route.”

Branch Loop. But he couldn’t quote the percentage of streetcars.

Daily from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., some 501 Queen streetcars will operate from Neville Park through to Long Branch, while others will be turned back at Humber Loop.

The 301 Queen Blue Service will operate between Neville Park and Long Branch through Humber Loop between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Mozetic argued Humber Bay residents need a direct route to downtown. The largely condominium community boasts a population of 18,000 and growing.

The TTC operates a Humber Express Bus service to downtown Toronto. The extra-fare service operates in the morning and afternoon peak periods.

But Mozetic argued the express bus doesn’t operate at enough convenient times for her to take it regularly.

“Humber Bay residents have been getting the short end of the stick from the TTC for too long, and now with this change it’s the nail in the coffin,” Mozetic said. “It is very unfair to expect such a growing community to not have a direct line to downtown.”

Featuring a 12-week curriculum developed by NBA Basketball Operations and a team of experts in child development and physical literacy, the Jr. NBA program now being offered by the Golden Eagles is designed to provide children five to seven with a fun, active and healthy environment in which the learn the game, explained club founder Chris Marcinkiewicz.

“It’s a really age-specific program in the sense that (Jr. NBA Canada) provides us with a 12-week curriculum, as well as equipment that is suitable for kids that age – including smaller basketballs and lower nets,” Marcinkiewicz said.

“So it’s perfect for those younger players.

“Otherwise, we put them in a school gym where the nets are 10 feet and it’s difficult for them to even get the ball up to the rim.”

Founded by Marcinkiewicz in 2013, the south Etobicokebased Golden Eagles are one of just a handful of Toronto clubs currently offering the Jr. NBA Canada program locally.

While the program officially kicks off Friday, Jan. 29 from 6 to 7 p.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic School, 20 Coules Ct. (near Brown’s Line and Evans Avenue), Marcinkiewicz is set to host a meet-and-greet for parents and an informal practice for participating kids at the school the week before.

“On Jan. 22 from 6 to 7 p.m., we’re having the kids come out, we’re going to give them their Jr. NBA gear and we’re going to explain the program, let the kids get comfortable with their surroundings, and have a little practice,” he said, noting the cost of the 12-week program is $120 – including a Jr. NBA T-shirt, basketball and gym bag.

The South Toronto Golden Eagles Basketball Club is set to launch a new Jr. NBA Canada program for aspiring young players aged five to seven. Participants of the 12-week program will receive a Jr. NBA basketball, T-shirt and gym bag.

“As with all of our programs, we want to make it affordable so that if kids want to play, they get an opportunity to do that. “ We want to make it doable for families where money might be tight,” Marcinkiewicz said of the Golden Eagles’ mandate. kids out of trouble After moving to Mimico in 2012, Marcinkiewicz said he was compelled to start up the Golden Eagles basketball club in May 2013 as a way of keeping local kids out of trouble.

“My background is in criminology and psychology, and in my work I’ve dealt with a lot of kids in trouble with the law.

“A lot of my work has been counselling – one-on-one work with kids who are going down the wrong path,” he

explained.

“So I wanted to do my little part and build a program in the community so that the kids have something to do to stay out of trouble and something to look forward to.”

In addition to the new Jr. NBA program, the Golden Eagles also run a house league program for kids eight to 12 and an Ontario Basketball Association rep team for boys under 13.

While the Golden Eagles’ house league and rep team’s season are already well underway, registration for the club’s new Jr. NBA program is still open to aspiring basketball players aged five to seven.

Hockey players earn athlete of the month honours Etobicoke players lead Dirk Stadig and Matthew Falls were both born and raised in Etobicoke and are currently playing for the AAA Minor Midget Toronto Junior Canadiens.

During the Christmas break, Dirk and Matt helped their Junior Canadiens squad win the highly coveted Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic AAA Hockey Tournament, going 8-0 against a field of competition that featured the top-ranked minor midget teams from across Canada and the United States.

Dirk learned to skate at the Long Branch and Sir Adam Beck arenas when he was three years old. He joined the Queensway Canadiens where he played for three years, tyke through minor novice. From there Dirk moved onto the West Mall Lightning to play novice, before moving into the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), playing two years with the Toronto Titans, three years with the Toronto Young Nationals and the past two years with the Toronto Junior Canadiens.

the Junior Canadiens.

Matthew attends Silverthorn Collegiate Institute where he is currently a Grade 10 student and playing for his school hockey team as well.

“Dirk and Matt are different players. Dirk plays defense with amazing skating abilities, while Matt is a power forward who scored twice in

the final game for a 3-2 win,” said Joanne Noble, chair of the Board of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame.

A couple of Etobicoke players have helped host Canada into the playoff round at the U18 Women’s World Championship in St. Catharines.

Canada is slated to play its semifinal round today (Thursday), 7:30 p.m., against Russia at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines.

The championship game is slated for Friday, 7:30 p.m. and is on TSN 2.

Canada posted a 2-1 record in the preliminary round, the lone loss 4-1 at the hands of arch rival U.S. and wins of 5-2 over Russia and 11-0 over the Czech Republic.

Watts, a student at Bishop Strachan School in mid-town Toronto, shares the tournament lead in scoring with four points (one goal, three assists) with four other teammates.

Neatby, a student at Etobicoke’s Father Redmond Catholic Secondary School, has got the call in net in two games, in the loss against the U.S. (saving 28 of 31 shots)

and the win against Russia (saving 16 of 18 shots).

Both players play junior hockey in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League – Watts for the Mississauga Chiefs, Neatby for the Toronto Aeros.

Both started their hockey careers in Etobicoke, both at one time suiting up for the Humber Valley Sharks and the Etobicoke Dolphins organizations.

Niagara Region is welcoming the tournament with open arms setting new attendance standards for the tournament.

According to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the Canada-U.S. preliminary game was played before an all-time record crowd of 4,016 which also pushed the event total to nearly 22,000, well above the previous record of 17,480 set in 2012.
