Plan B is currently in play when it comes to the ultimate fates of two former school properties in Etobicoke – Thistletown Multi-Service Centre and Silver Creek. Despite rallying cries from their respective communities to save the properties from the chopping block, both were declared surplus by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) at its June 22 board meeting.

hile solving the problem of food insecurity will require a concerted effort from all levels of government, there is a great deal being done at a more grassroots level to help make sure Torontonians can put food on their plates. Organizations such as
Community Food Centres Canada (CFC), FoodShare, Building Roots and the Toronto Youth Food Policy Council (TYFPC) are engaging vulnerable Torontonians through a variety of programs and initiatives, providing not only food but opportunity. CFC Chief Operating Officer Kathryn Scharf (www. cfccanada.ca) said awareness of food security issues is growing, as is action to
combat them. party in the street: Clockwise from top left, prime Minister Justin trudeau joins in on the toronto pride parade fun sunday; the parade makes its way down yonge street; a group displays a large pride flag and revellers party it up. this year marked the event’s 36th year. this year also marked the first year the city has celebrated pride Month, with a month’s worth of festivities.
Black Lives Matter expects demands to be met Pride Toronto says decisions will be made by membership and community DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Black Lives Matter – Toronto will be watching over the next year to see if Pride Toronto implements the nine demands to which organizers appeared to agree on Sunday afternoon – including a total ban of police presence at the annual Pride Parade. “Now it’ll just be a matter of seeing how those demands are followed up,” said Black Lives Matter – Toronto spokesperson Leroi Newbold in an interview Monday. One of the more controversial demands is one that asks police not be present at the parade. Newbold clarified that Black Lives Matter not only wanted police to not participate in the parade, but also not to police it, leaving security to Pride organizers. “We are asking Pride to take a look at what it means for black communities to have a police presence at Pride,” said Newbold. “For example there are many black LGBT youth who’ve had interac-
tions with police. I think it’s important for some people to understand that even the presence of police at an event like this creates an unsafe environment.” Newbold dismissed the suggestion that Pride Toronto would be legally required to pay for off-duty police officers to simply obtain permits. “There are many within Pride that have their own security and don’t utilize police,” Newbold said. “Year after year we’ve kept the events safe by using our own methods of security.” Early indications are that that and the other eight demands won’t necessarily be implemented by the Pride Committee. In an interview with The Toronto Star, Pride Toronto’s Executive Director Mathieu Chantelois said that although he signed an agreement to cede to the demands, the next course of action will be decided by Pride’s membership and the community. “What’s important for people to know is that I’m not
deciding what’s in the parade, Alica (Hall, co-chair of Pride’s board of directors) doesn’t decide what’s in the parade, Black Lives Matter doesn’t… decide what’s in the parade,” he said. “Who’s deciding what’s in the parade is the membership, and my community… What I did (Sunday) was made the parade move.” The Pride Parade was brought to a standstill when members of Black Lives Matter – Toronto (invited as an honoured guest ) stopped in their tracks at Yonge and College streets, backing up other floats and demanded immediate action on nine demands. Chantelois met with them at the parade and signed the nine demands. Newbold said the group is taking the commitment seriously, but noted issues the black queer community has had with Pride are longstanding. “We did get a sign off so we’ll continue,” Newbold said. “This isn’t the beginning of the black community’s resistance, we’ve been having these conversations for years. They
may not have been getting the media attention but we’ve been having them for years.” Local Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam was conciliatory July 4 and defended the decision to protest in the context of the larger tradition of protest that is at the heart of Pride. “That’s a very appropriate place for political dissent and political messaging,” she said. “Nobody should take that away from Black Lives Matter. Pride is not just about beer gardens and $10 corn on the cob. It’s much more. Our community is only ever stronger when we come together. It is important to continue the conversation. There are racialized and vulnerable people in our community that don’t always feel welcome.” With that said, Wong-Tam said she doesn’t agree with asking police to stay away e. “If the police aren’t there they get criticized for not being there, and now that the police are there, singing and dancing in the street, they’re criticized for participating,”
It took more than half a century for his story to come full circle, but a Micmac man who faced overt discrimination in Etobicoke’s school system has been acknowledged. Dr. Bob Phillips gave an ovation-filled commencement speech at Burnhamthorpe C.I.’s graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 30, the school he was expelled from as a 17-year-old. “Perhaps my being here for graduation today is actually the graduation ceremony I should have had 55 years ago,” Phillips said. “Never ever, ever give up.” Phillips, also known as Elder Bob or Great Bear, now holds a PhD in Indigenous Studies and advocates for mandatory inclusion of First Nations history in Canadian curriculums. “In the Etobicoke classrooms, it was surprising the amount of times I was told ‘Now you sit up straight like a good little Indian and you be quiet’,” Phillips said. “Why would a nine or 10-year-old student be told time and time again ‘You should be in reform school’? Today I understand they were talking about residential school.” Burnhamthorpe C.I. made Phillips retake Grade 12 and he was routinely put in detention by his French teacher. During one particular detention Phillips said a fire alarm went off and he asked to leave, the French teacher refused. After a brief disagreement about Phillips leaving
his chair, he was sent home and expelled from the entire Etobicoke Board of Education the next day. Phillips said it was revealed by the principal of a high school he attended the following year that the Burnhamthorpe C.I. administration had falsified his grades in order to keep him out of reaching Grade 13. The school allegedly feared the now PhD holder would have brought down the class average. In an apt parallel, Burnhamthorpe C.I. has become a school devoted to adult students served with everything from a hairstyling program to an electrician program to – yes – First Nations studies. “We all need each other... we have to be each other’s champion, we have to work with each other to achieve whatever goal we have set for ourselves. I believe that (Dr.) Bob (Phillips) is a clear demonstration of that.” Burnhamthorpe’s principal Bernard Lee said. One of three valedictorians from the 2016 graduating class, Ana Paula Perez, said Phillips’ message of never giving up stuck with her. “People have to understand that, maybe you’re getting there a little later in life, but you’re still getting there,” Perez said. “A lot of people here (at the graduation ceremony) are going through exceptional circumstances like losses in the family, like depression... but they’re here and they’re doing it now and they’re getting into all the same programs as everyone else.”

Group’s tactics overshadow issues at Pride Parade
WRitE uS
A
staged sit-in protest by the Toronto chapter of Black Lives Matter last Sunday at the Pride Parade certainly has people talking. But are they talking for the right reasons? Given the status as an Honoured Group for the parade, Black Lives Matter effectively halted the parade for half an hour as they issued a list of nine demands. The annual parade that capped off Pride Month only began to move again once Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois signed the document, seemingly agreeing to those demands, which included reinstating and committing to increase community stages as well as the removal of police floats in Pride marches OuR ViEW and parades. The latter, not surprisingly, has been getting a lot of attention Continue with Toronto Police Association dialogue of president Mike McCormack conPride Toronto for signinclusiveness demning ing the paper and accusing Black Lives Matter of “hijacking” the grand event Sunday. People on Twitter had plenty to say about it too, many siding with police and recognizing their contributions over the years to support the growing Pride movement. It seems counterproductive and counterintuitive to exclude police from a parade celebrating inclusivity, especially as some in the LGBT community also work in the police force. While the protest brought both public and media attention to Black Lives Matter, the reasons for the protest were overshadowed by the tactics. People are talking about whether it was appropriate or justified to do what they did during the parade, rather than how events like Pride can be even more inclusive and welcoming to other marginalized communities. Perhaps continuing the dialogue at the upcoming community meetings on anti-racism that the provincial government is hosting this summer is a good place to start. The first meeting is scheduled to take place in Toronto on July 14 with another in Scarborough on Sept. 13. For effective change to occur, Black Lives Matter must first gain the public’s empathy and support for their cause.

Black Lives Matter parade protest not surprising It’s hard to know what to make of the Black Lives Matter – Toronto (BLMTO)/ Pride Toronto dust-up. That, of course, won’t stop me from weighing in on the spectacle – even if it wasn’t really much of one. To recap: Black Lives Matter – Toronto, a group that has seen great success staging discomfiting public protests, accepted an invitation from Pride Toronto (another group that has in the past seen great success staging discomfiting public protests) to be an “honoured guest” at this year’s Pride Parade. And things went exactly as you’d expect: a discomfiting public protest, in the form of a disruption to the Pride Parade that was only able to resume once Pride Toronto had “agreed” to a list of demands from BLMTO. Among those demands? No coppers please, at future Pride parades. The pearl-clutching began. The Toronto Police Association demanded Pride
david nickle the city Toronto apologize for signing off on the deal. Mayor John Tory, through his office, joined voices on Toronto council including local councillor and longtime Pride supporter Kristyn Wong-Tam to make it clear that police should be welcomed at the parade for if nothing else than the purpose of keeping open lines of communication between the LGBTQ2S community and the police. And finally Pride Toronto’s executive director Mathieu Chantelois made it clear himself that signing a deal with BLMTO, while he was trying to simply get the parade moving, wasn’t going to be binding, and ultimately, Pride and the community would make the final decision. It would be an excellent bet that police will be back in the parade next year. It’s tempting to look at all
this from the outside and dismiss it as silliness, or an “inside-baseball” dispute… tempting to see this as a bit of a nadir for Black Lives Matter, pulling a disruptive stunt at what was otherwise a healing event for a community still processing the massacre in Orlando – all to extract promises that won’t be kept, and for the most part are over internal Pride matters that might have been dealt with as well using nothing more than a few stern emails. That is, however, missing the point of successful protest movements like Black Lives Matter, which are combatting not only very small issues, but very, very large ones. A few days earlier, Metropolitan Community Church pastor and gay rights activist Brent Hawkes stood with police Chief Mark Saunders for what had been billed an historic apology by police for the bath house raids in the early 1980s that destroyed the lives of clos-
eted gay men, and ruined businesses. An apology was a big thing, but also a small thing – and Hawkes spoke that day of how he had contacted the chief, and negotiated an apology, and that sometimes, negotiation was necessary. The only trouble? At the end of all that negotiation, Saunders did not in fact apologize; he very deliberately expressed “regrets” for police actions, and promised to do better – and really, with that, closed the matter as far as police were concerned. It’s comforting to think that change can happen with comfortable negotiation. But the reality is that genuine change requires an irritant to motivate it. Black Lives Matters understands that, and so of course they showed up in full, irritating glory on Sunday.

Former Pirri’s Fruit Market owners celebrate 72 years together CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Ask Frank and Muriel Pirri’s children the secret to their parents’ long and happy marriage and they’ll tell you of their steadfast commitment to family and hard work. The Etobicoke couple, once proud owners of a wellknown chain of fruit markets across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on Sunday surrounded by family – including their three children, Vito, Margaret and Rose, as well as four of their seven grandchildren and two of 10 great-grandchildren. “My dad owned Pirri’s Fruit Markets and worked hard all his life – and my mom was by his side all the time,” said Rose Pirri-Santo. “As a family, we were always at the fruit market together.” Pirri and Sons Fruit Market – the first of what would grow to become a chain of markets across the GTA – was opened by Frank’s father, Vito, in 1912

at 2930 Danforth Ave. A recent immigrant from Sicily, Vito came to Canada with virtually nothing but the clothes on his back, but was able scrape together enough money to fund his family’s first market by working on the railroad. As Frank, born in 1924, grew older, he took on more and more responsibility at the family business. “In his early years, my
father was delivering bags of potatoes and milk and bread on his bicycle every day after school in the Danforth area,” said Frank’s son Vito, who was named after his grandfather. It was on July 4, 1944 that Frank, who turns 92 today , would marry Muriel Cutrara, now 91, the daughter of a Sicilian family in the wholesale produce business. “So when mom and dad
moved to Etobicoke in 1951 and opened up a very unique, open-air fruit market across from The Kingsway Theatre, it became a real family business – the first of many markets my dad would open,” Vito said. Born the same year his parents opened Pirri’s California Market at Royal York and Bloor, Vito said he too would follow in his father’s footsteps into the family business very early in life.

“By the age of five years old, I would accompany my dad to the Ontario Food Terminal, which he was at every morning at 4:30 or 5 a.m. So at a very young age, it became very instinctive for me, learning an industry that I grew up with,” Vito said. “As I got a bit older, maybe eight or nine years old, he taught me how to pyramid oranges in the market. And my dad would often give me
a roll of nickels to put in the customers’ parking meters out front – little gestures like that really helped the business and earned my parents a reputation for customer service.” As business boomed, Frank and Muriel expanded, opening fruit markets in Markham, Scarborough, Oakville and Mississauga, among others. To help run those markets, Frank turned to family members – some Vito said he didn’t even really know – in Italy. “He brought them over and, one store at a time, he put the family that he brought from Italy into these retail produce markets, and more or less taught them the ropes,” Vito said. “And one by one, he opened six fruit markets in the Greater Toronto Area.” While the last of those markets was closed in the early 1990s, the Pirri family’s memories of those days lives on – memories they reminisced over this weekend at a joint party celebrating Frank and Muriel’s wedding anniversary and Frank’s birthday.

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background.
A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally
Hair cells in the ear move very rapidly and can act as an amplifier or dampener. If these cells are damaged, they can no longer properly amplify speech and dampen loud noises. amplified in the ear and loud sounds no longer dampened. This leads to more difficulty in hearing what is said in a lot of situations. If the hair cells have been damaged by noise or blood circulation problems, hearing aids that amplify quiet speech and dampen loud ambient noise can be a good solution for most people.
Connect Hearing is currently looking to improve hearing for people who experience these challenges and want to try this new technology. We are particularly interested in candidates who have trouble hearing speech in the situations discussed above and can benefit from a trial to see whether they notice an improvement.

Q
What is the best solution to get rid of acne FOREVER..?
A
The treatment of acne and consequently eliminate acne from your system depends on several easy points that need to be ironed out so that your body would respond to the treatment. All toxic residuals accumulated in your body over the past years must be driven out of the body to help the body recover. These residuals stem from accutane, antibiotics, pesticides on vegetables and fruits, food fermentations and faulty diets. This acne procedure is suitable to treat every person suffering from Acne, boils, skin irritations, black heads, scaring, etc. There are four points that should be observed while treating Acne. 1- find the cause since not all acne are the same, 2- treat the cause and the symptoms, 3- help prevent reoccurrence of symptoms 4- help prevent scaring. An important point must be recognized that no two acne cases are the same. Each condition must be dealt with it on its own merits in order to have better resolutions. special report
Better wages, improved access are the keys to fighting food insecurity >>>from page 1 she said, adding that finding local partners willing to help deliver services is a key part of what her organization does. Scharf noted that while teaching healthy food skills, offering cooking groups and classes, providing afterschool programs where kids can have healthy snacks and creating community gardens are all great ways to combat food insecurity, the key is in making sure more Canadians can earn a living wage. However, that’s something that will only come about when governments mandate it, said Scharf. “The key is to fight poverty, fight for housing, increase wages and social assistance rates,” she said. “We can push for those things at a grassroots level, but we can’t make them happen.” Darcy Higgins of Building Roots (www.pushfoodforward.com/buildingroots) agreed that a wage policy, along with better social support, is the best permanent solution, adding his organization is doing its best in the meantime to bring food access to where people need it most.

We’re trying to bring fresh food at affordable prices to where people need it most.
– Darcy Higgins of Building Roots
“We’re trying to bring fresh food at affordable prices to where people need it most,” he said. “We have a Moss Park Market that just opened in a shipping container on Toronto Community Housing property, and that’s a model we’re hoping to replicate in other communities. We’re exploring and looking for partners across the city, especially in the suburbs.” He said those battling food insecurity can also benefit from connecting with community agencies that can help teach them to cut costs and stretch their food budgets further, by joining

The Toronto Food Council’s Food by Ward report looks at food security issues across the city on a wardby-ward basis.
Food needs vary by neighbourhoods JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com

cooking programs run by not-for-profits, or by growing their own food, perhaps in community gardens near where they live. The Ashbridge Estate near Queen and Greenwood is a prime example of using available space to bolster food security. A new community garden has been planted there by Syrian refugees to complement an existing community garden at the site. “There are so many communities – especially lower-income communities – where there aren’t stores for people to buy fresh food,” Higgins said. “It tends to be more convenience stores (instead of affordable grocery stores with more healthy options) in those communities, so you have to look at other solutions.” Toronto Youth Food Policy Council (www.tyfpc.ca) cochair Melana Roberts said projects to boost food security can range from relatively
small in scale, such as new pop-up food markets being launched at TTC subway stations at Downsview, Kipling and Victoria Park stations, to Malvern Eats – a community lunch that hosts as many as 300 guests – to the CEED (community eco economic development), which could see hydro corridors turned into community gardens. “We’re working with Toronto Public Health and looking at four different sites where (CEED) could work,” she said, noting those sites include Rexdale, northeast Scarborough, Flemingdon Park and the Danforth and Victoria Park area. “They’re in neighbourhoods characterized as priority neighbourhoods with a really diverse mix of residents in terms of age, socioeconomic background and ethnicity.” FoodShare (www.foodshare.net), meanwhile, helps various organizations bring food to communities by combining their buying
power. Rather than having each organization make connections and buy goods, they can pool their resources and make bulk purchases from the Ontario Food Terminal, stretching those dollars further. “There’s $29 million spent a year by non-profit agencies in the community food sector (each year in Toronto,)” said Shawn Conway of FoodShare. “That’s a lot of buying power.” “We started out with an emphasis on fresh produce, but now we have a dairy line and a bread line as well.” Many other organizations across the city are helping to keep vulnerable Torontonians fed, but they all acknowledge their work is simply addressing the symptoms of the type of poverty that leads to food insecurity. They say it’s ultimately up to government to determine if and when a permanent solution to the issue will be presented.
Food is an essential pillar of city building. That’s the premise behind a recently released report titled Food by Ward: Food Assets and Opportunities in Toronto. The report, which took about a year to put together, was initially launched by the Toronto Food Policy Council (TFPC) as a way to engage with municipal candidates during the 2014 election on the topic of food security. Now that the election is over, the TFPC is continuing to work with elected officials as well as community organizations and individuals to advocate for more food security programs and initiatives. Using resources from Toronto Public Health, Food by Ward provides a snapshot of food assets across Toronto’s 44 municipal wards, said Rachel Gray, chair of the Toronto Food Policy Council, during a recent interview. Gray, who is the executive director of The Stop Community Food Centre in the Annex, said the findings of Food by Ward can and should be used to help identify food priorities and come up with viable ways to improve the availability of affordable, healthy food across the city. She said the areas that tend to be lacking the most are the suburban, and often lower-income, parts of the city where people usually need a vehicle to go to the grocery store. The outer portions of the city are also often where marginalized individuals live, including those on fixed incomes, and newcomers. Gray also said a lot of the findings in Food by Ward mirror those of the groundbreaking 2010 Three Cities Within Toronto report by David Hulchanski of the University of Toronto, which looked at income polarization in the city from 1970 to 2005. The good news is that food insecurity problems can be improved when people and organizations come together, Gray said, pointing to simple things that can make a huge difference like community gardens and community food programs. And fortunately, a lot of people are interested in getting involved, she added. At Food by Ward’s launch event recently at Toronto City Hall, more than 100 community food champions as well as more than a third of Toronto city councillors same out to show their support. n Visit www.tfpc.to/food-by-ward to view the report.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT vast majority of the tickets were for speeding, the OPP also laid 126 impaired driving charges and issued warnings to 55 drivers. Eighty-four vehicles were also impounded for street racing. No deaths were reported. The OPP was also active on the water, laying impaired boating charges on 55 individuals over the weekend. PEdESTRIAnS STRUCK ACROSS CITY wCYCLISTS,
It was another fatal day on the streets of Toronto. A 70-year-old man was killed on Monday, July 4 after being hit by the driver of a van in Rexdale. The incident was just one of 13 separate incidents that same day where pedestrians or cyclists were struck in all corners of the city. If that wasn’t enough, 10 separate incidents were reported over the Canada Day weekend, either involving
pedestrians or cyclists. Next week, Toronto Council will debate recommendations for a new plan to improve road safety. SPEEd RESTRICTIOnS LIFTEd wSUBwAY
The trains headed for BloorYonge might be moving a little faster than usual. The TTC announced it has lifted restricted speeds in place on the outdoor track section between Summerhill and Rosedale stations, which were instituted for safety concerns last month. The restrictions resulted in trains moving at a snail’s pace to and from Bloor station and seem to be an ongoing occurrence due to the conditions of the outdoor track section on Line 1, which is more than 60 years old and has needed to undergo extensive rehabilitation work in the recent past just to extend its shelf-life. Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System
What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job.
What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis.
HAVE YOU LOOKED AT ALL SIDES OF YOUR ROOF RECENTLY?
Peter & Greg Walker Contracting has been serving the roofing needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 15 times (including 2016).

CONSUMER FEATURE
On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.
Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners
like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca
Collect money owed to you from class action settlements totaling more than $10 MILLION. A $50 minimum for borrowers depending on claims volume: Simple Claims Process likely not required.

GoFundMe campaign launched to help cover costs of trip, treatment >>>from page 1 A professional actor, Rian hasn’t been able to work, or to attend Etobicoke School of the Arts full-time or perform in its national champion show choir in more than two years. “I have a purpose and that is to heal my kids,” Rian’s mother, Tanis Michelsen, 40, said. “My son has been living in this hell, thinking ‘will I ever be able to walk around the block again?’ His treatments have shown some improvement, then he crashes again. I’m not going to lose my son to this.” Michelsen has become a self-educated, dedicated online researcher of Lyme disease. Online, she has connected with others with Lyme disease on a multitude of Facebook groups, and followed doctors’ Lyme protocols globally in an effort to help her ailing son. Since Rian’s diagnosis, the entire Etobicoke family – Michelsen, her husband, Brett, 42, Rian, and daughters Jade, 12 and Lyla, eight – have all been diagnosed with Lyme disease, all experiencing different and varying degrees of symptoms. According to Health Canada, Lyme disease is caused by a type of bacteria (called Borrelia burgdorferi) which in Canada is spread by infected blacklegged ticks (also western blacklegged ticks in British Columbia). Ticks can become infected by feeding on infected wild animals such as deer, birds and rodents and then pass it on to humans through their bite. Online, Michelsen discovered a very ill musician in England with Lyme who also suffers neurological symptoms, who is receiving treatment at a clinic in Germany. On Facebook, Michelsen found the clinic’s lead naturopathic doctor, Dr. Michael Wittstadt, who has since opened his own clinic, Medigreen, specializing in Lyme disease treatment in Otzberg, Germany. The treatment is not available in Canada or the U.S. They connected. The

doctor has studied Rian’s case for more than two years. On July 9, the Michelsen family will fly to Germany where Rian will undergo intensive treatment at the clinic for four weeks at a cost of $45,000. A friend launched the Hope for Rian’s 18th Birthday GoFundMe page to help. To date, it has raised more than $30,060 of its $45,000 goal. Visit https://www. gofundme.com/29kpv4mk to donate. Doctors will use Rian’s own blood to harvest his healthy stem cells, modulate his immune system, kill the harmful Lyme bacteria and other pathogens, detox his body from other bio-toxins, and then reintroduce healthy stem cells into Rian’s body. Supportive therapies such as osteopathy, hypnotherapy and lifestyle counselling are part of the treatment. An intensive 100-day healing period follows. “They’ll be preparing not only Rian’s body, but his mind for whatever life he is going to have,” Michelsen said of her son’s treatment. “His Lyme disease isn’t necessarily going to go away. We don’t know the prognosis. It’s about putting his immune system back in control for whatever his life will look like after.” If the treatment helps Rian, Michelsen said the rest of her family may consider it. Lyla was symptomatic

since birth. She struggles with food allergies and sensitivities, chronic fatigue and joint pain. This year, she missed 111 full days of school. Both Lyla and Rian experienced unbearable side effects on the antibiotic protocol, their mother said. “My son started having panic attacks. My daughter had terrible bladder symptoms. I had a crying, inconsolable eight-year-old screaming, ‘it’s burning. It’s burning.’ And my son can’t sleep.” Michelsen, who had also been on the 18-month antibiotic protocol, recalls chronic fatigue so severe she “could barely get off the couch. I’d crawl to the bathroom and give myself a soldier bath to get my daughter off to school. My pain was at a 10. I knew then all our bodies had had enough. There had to be another way, other than antibiotics.” Last year, the Michelsens paid $42,000 out-of-pocket for treatment not covered by insurance. Brett works 12- to 16-hour days. Tanis is a full-time caregiver to her children, and Paleo chef to her family. The family has travelled to New York to see Dr. Maureen McShane, who prescribed the antibiotic protocol. Michelsen expressed frustration there is no Lyme disease research funding in Canada, which complicates testing. There is also no available treatment in Canada. But Michelsen has found a silver lining - calling the GoFundMe donors a “blessing.” “Lyme has certainly brought our family closer together. That is the blessing,” she said. “The GoFundMe campaign has just boosted everything. It’s really not about the money. The notes from people reaching out, showing support are incredible. To my son and I, in particular, it is a blessing. “When two of your kids are home from school all the time, you’re in a bubble. You don’t know people are sending you love and strength.” Michelsen said she intends to dedicate her life to educating people about Lyme disease, not just for the health of her children, but to save the suffering of other families.

‘Long-term solution’ being sought for Silver Creek >>>from page 1 munity can rest easy,” Etobicoke North Councillor and Deputy Mayor Vincent Crisanti said of the city’s impending purchase of Thistletown MSC – a plan he referred to as “Plan B” at a May 19 community meeting, before the TDSB declared the community centre as surplus to its needs. Crisanti noted that just last week the city’s Executive Committee voted unanimously to approve the purchase of the property at 925 Albion Rd., which the city has been leasing and operating as a community centre since 1985. That decision at the executive level is slated to be ratified at the next Toronto City Council meeting on July 12. “I’m confident it will be supported,” he said. “I can’t imagine any councillor who would vote against supporting this community...We’re here to support these centres, particularly one like Thistletown that’s been operating as a hub for the last 35 years.” In addition to acting as a city-operated community centre, Thistletown MSC is also home to a subsidized childcare centre and provides space to

Residents packed a community meeting back in May to show opposition to the sale of Silver Creek school. The Toronto District School Board at its June 22 meeting deemed the property surplus, but the province is in talks to purchase the site.
Thistletown Seniors’ Centre, Rexdale Women’s Centre, Albion Islington BIA, and Rexdale Soccer Club, among many other permit holders. News of the city’s impending purchase of Thistletown came as welcome news to the centre’s board of management, which includes chair Joanna Twitchin and vice-chair Suzan Hall. “For us, it’s the ideal solution,
because the city has been paying the lease on this property since 1985. For the amount of money the city’s paid on the lease, they could have bought the building a couple of times over already,” said Twitchin, noting that the city also footed the bill for the centre’s many operating costs and capital repairs. Meanwhile, talks between the TDSB and the province towards the
former’s purchase of the old Silver Creek Public School property at 65 Hartsdale Dr. are still ongoing. Closed by the TDSB as an operating school back in 1982, the site currently houses Silver Creek Pre-School – a 40-year tenant of the property that each year serves 70 children aged 18 months to five years, 80 per cent of whom live with physical and/or developmental challenges – and the Etobicoke Children’s Centre – an accredited, non-profit children’s mental health centre that provides a variety of programs and services for about 1,200 children, youth and families each year. Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker said he’s made it his priority to protect those services for his constituents. “I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time advocating with the provincial government to make sure we do everything possible to protect these services in the community,” he said, noting that he’s been in talks towards those ends with both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. “As you can imagine, there are a lot of different factors that have to be discussed, which is why the staff
at both the province and TDSB need time... We don’t just want to come up with a solution in the short-term, we want to come up with a solution that’s sustainable – and that process requires time.” That sentiment was echoed by Etobicoke Trustee Chris Glover: “I think we’ve taken a positive step, in that we’re looking for a long-term solution,” he said, noting that this marks the third time in just six years that Silver Creek has been considered by the TDSB for potential sale. A third Etobicoke school also up for potential sale was saved from the TDSB’s chopping block, when trustees voted on June 22 to retain it as a core holding. Glover said he and his colleagues voted to hold onto the former Buttonwood Hill Public School property at 100 Allanhurst Dr. due to the fact that recent development in the area means that the building might need to be re-opened as a school sometime in the not-so-distant future. “In the city of Toronto, it’s not a good idea to be selling properties,” he said. “I think we should be hanging on to all the property we’ve got.”

hilarious romp has love on the loose in the woods,” Humber River Shakespeare writes in a statement. “Add a misapplied love potion, mistaken identities and the most famous playwithin-a play ever written, and you have a perfect recipe for joy and laughter.” family friendly Directed by Kevin Hammond and starring Steve Coombes, Michaela Di Cesare, Madeleine Donohue, Isaac Giles, Grace Gordon, Jordin Hall, M.E. Lewis, Tim MacLean and Matthew Pilipiak, all performances are family friendly. Humber River
