Tuesday evening’s scattered thundershowers proved no match for the Pan Am Torch Relay – the rain could neither extinguish the Pan Am flame, nor dampen the spirits of the torchbearers who carried it through Etobicoke. “Nothing, not even a tsunami would have stopped me from carrying the torch, from carrying the Pan Am flame,” two-time Olympic hurdler and Pan Am torchbearer Perdita Felicien said in an interview with The Guardian at Albion Arena Tuesday evening, shortly after strutting and twirling her way down Albion Road to Katy Perry’s Fireworks with her torch held aloft. “When you compete as an >>>HUNDREDS, page 18

Lanes ready for Pan Am bowlers Bowling, BMX Centre in Centennial Park complete their transformation for the Pan Am Games

E

tobicoke bowling enthusiasts will soon have the Western Hemisphere’s top “strokers, crankers and tweeners” in their backyard, as Pan Am bowling action comes to Planet Bowl from July 22-25. Although technically located in Mississauga, Planet Bowl – which will be known as the Pan Am Bowling Centre during the Games – is one of three official sites that make up the “Etobicoke cluster” of venues for the Toronto 2015 Games. The other two venues include the Pan Am BMX Centre and the Etobicoke Olympium aquatics training centre, which are both located on the grounds of Centennial Park – just a stone’s throw from Planet Bowl’s Eglinton Avenue front door. John Chapman, Planet Bowl’s general manager, said management of the 48-lane bowling alley, which first opened in 1996, has spent the last two years preparing the spacious facility to play host to the Pan Am Bowling Centre. “We’ve done a lot of upgrades: all new chairs, tables and couches; the washrooms underwent a total overhaul, so now everything’s totally barrier-free and touchless; we took out all the carpeting and put down all new flooring on both the concourse and in the bowler’s area; and we upgraded the scoring two years ago,” he said of the renovations undertaken since Planet Bowl beat out several other local bowling centres to be named a Pan Am venue.

preparations in advance of the July 22-25 bowling competition, tickets for which are nearly sold out. BMX CENTRE

In addition to boasting an impressive 48 lanes, Planet Bowl’s facilities also include a fully stocked pro shop, a full restaurant and bar, and a games arcade. “This will be our first international event, which is kind of exciting. I think it’s going to run really well – touch wood,” Chapman said. “We’re ready for it – I think we really are.” Planet Bowl will officially close to the public on July 13 to allow Pan Am officials to undertake all necessary

Meanwhile, just down the road, the 3.2-hectare Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre was constructed as a legacy project for the Toronto 2015 Games. The $4.5 million, 350metre bike course boasts both fiveand eight-metre start ramps and a compact closed-looped design consisting of four straightaways and three banked turns filled with challenging jumps that will test the 25 male and 18 female riders taking part in the Pan Am BMX competition on July 11 – tickets for which are sold out. While some local residents voiced their opposition to the BMX course – citing the cost, its potential impact on nearby wetlands, safety concerns and the perceived lack of community consultation in the planning

process, among other concerns – Brendan Arnold, head coach with the Ontario Cycling Association, characterized it as a “game changer” for the sport of cycling in Ontario. Having a permanent state-of-theart track at Centennial Park, Arnold said at a community meeting in October, will only help to increase BMX’s popularity in Ontario for years to come. “Ontario Cycling is committed to making sure we have this track, not only as a live performance centre, but also working towards getting a club going at this track, which is vital,” Arnold said. “When you have a track like this, people want to know how to use it and they want to be competent in doing it. It’s our commitment to make sure we have coaching, instruction, and that there’s programs running out of this facility.”

Will the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Games be a boost or blow to the local economy? It’s anyone’s guess, said David Pritchard, Mimico-By-The-Lake Business Improvement Area chair, and co-owner of Birds and Beans Cafe and Roastery. “ I d o n’t k n o w. We don’t have hotels in our area. I’m wondering if people who live here are going to go out of town. Maybe business will b e w o r s e , ” David Pritchard Pritchard said. Mimico-By-The-Lake is south Etobicoke’s most-easterly business area of commercial retailers, including restaurants, bakeries and banks along Lake Shore Boulevard West. Pan Am traffic congestion concerns Pritchard. He transports Birds and Beans coffee from his Alderwood roastery to wholesale clients. “Will it take a lot longer to get our product to wholesale customers?” he asked. “In general, businesses in the hospitality area are going to find a different experience getting their product out. No allowance has been made to allow us to use HOV lanes.” The new High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) regulations are in effect until July 27. – Tamara Shephard

T

he Pan Am Games are here and they are taking place right now, so it’s time for Torontonians to stop complaining and start showing off our great city to the rest of the world. We all need to look beyond the personal inconvenience and embrace the bigger picture. Yes, those HOV lanes are annoying but it will only be for a short period of time. The Games are bringing a lot of positives both economically and culturally. Let’s celebrate that. In today’s edition we’re looking at the Pan Am Games’ impact on businesses, sports groups and people in our communities. One of those positives was this weekend’s celebration on the Prince Edward Viaduct that saw the Pan Games Torch Relay ignite a our view Am community cauldron and the lighting up of the Luminous Veil. The Share your lighting on the veil is one of the permanent legacies brought support and many about by the Games which also excitement include a number of world-class athletic facilities. Also, athletes are thrilled to have the opportunity to show their stuff for hometown fans. It’s a rare opportunity for them, and one they will cherish. As Toronto sports fans, we need to share their excitement and show our support for our athletes. As Torontonians we should also be embracing the chance to show those visiting from the 41 countries competing in the Pan Am Games that we are a great city in which to live, work and play. The Toronto Region Board of Trade looks at the Games as a chance to further establish the city as epicentre of global business. “From the business community’s perspective, we have 350,000 people coming into the GTA. These are folks who if they like what they see, will be coming back, and telling their friends. So hopefully we can look at this as a point in time where we can really showcase what we’ve got,” said TRBOT president Janet De Silva. With athletic events now underway, there’s plenty of enthusiasm from volunteers and athletes. And if sports isn’t your thing, there’s no end of social and cultural events to enjoy during the Games. Enjoy! We have all of that information available to you at www.insidetoronto.com/panam

What’s the amalgamation breaking point?

T

hose of us who’ve been in and around Toronto and its constituent municipalities the last couple of decades probably don’t need the Fraser Institute to tell us what terrible problems amalgamation caused. Before 1998, Toronto was six cities: North York and Scarborough and Etobicoke sprawling to the north and east and west, the tiny municipalities of East York and York huddling on the edge of old, urban Toronto. bad idea When then-premier Mike Harris and his municipal affairs minister Al Leach announced plans to amalgamate us all, everyone in Toronto not connected with the governing Progressive Conservative party knew instinctively it was a bad idea. It wouldn’t save money.

david nickle the city It would make governing these cities of neighbourhoods more difficult, not easier. It would, we were sure, be largely unpleasant. We were, in the main, right. And now the Fraser Institute, in a study cutely-subtitled “Breaking up is hard to do,” suggests that the biggest reason for Toronto to stay together is precisely for that reason: re-establishing Toronto’s old municipal boundaries, or indeed new ones that might be more rational from a 21st century perspective, would be a big job. too much work? The question is, do the problems that Toronto has now warrant that kind of work?

If we were talking a year ago in the dying days of the Ford administration it would be an easy one to answer. shotgun marriage The shotgun marriage of municipalities had descended to such a dysfunctional state that suburban Toronto had elected Rob Ford to its top job. And although the mayoralty has passed to steadier hands, it is too soon to say whether the wounds of amalgamation have significantly healed. It is probably also too soon to say that they haven’t healed, or that they won’t. But as the Fraser Institute’s report notes, other municipalities have managed the split – and Toronto might too. If we were to do so, best not follow the example of Montreal, which ended up with a jumble of small

municipalities and a new regional government. We would need some other model that took the lessons of history and the realities of the present into account. In the meantime, it might also be healthy to recognize that there exists the simple possibility of separation: that the bike-riding, latte-sipping denizens of the downtown core might be able to debate in a different room from the suburban, fiscal conservatives of the old suburban communities, and each might elect a mayor according to their needs and aspirations. Sometimes, there’s nothing to spur compromise in a relationship like the serious contemplation of its end. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Local swimmers plan for strength and speed in the Pan Am Games’ pool

MacLean is one of Canada’s best medal hopefuls; Loginov planning for career-best performance pan am games athletes TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Brittany MacLean is one of Canada’s top medal hopes at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. Alex Loginov is taking his first dive into international competition at the Games. The two Etobicoke swimmers are among 36 named to Canada’s Pan Am swim team. The 21-year-old national swimmer from Etobicoke brought home a total of five medals at last year’s Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships. “Last year, I was super happy about how it all turned out,” MacLean said. “I gained a lot of confidence from that and from my college year.” In 2014, Swimming Canada named her Canada’s female swimmer of the year. And she was named U.S. college swimmer of the year after helping her University of Georgia Bulldogs team to a national title. MacLean has struggled with injuries this year, but pushed through, she said, since being named to Team Canada in April to compete at the Pan Am Games. “It’s cool to be able to have an event like this at home,” she said. “I’m going to treat it like the Olympics. It’s really once in a lifetime. To see the city excited. I’m excited. I’m looking forward to making the city and the country proud.” MacLean set the 400m freestyle Canadian record at the London 2012 Summer Olympics when she finished 7th in the race. She was 18 at the time and had joined Canada’s senior team only the year before. MacLean will swim the women’s 800m freestyle race on Saturday, July 18 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports

Centre in Toronto. She may also swim in the 4x200m relay July 17. The team isn’t made official until days before the event, she said. “I’m going to swim my race. I’ll go in pretty strong,

hold it and trust my training going home.” Since, she has chased and secured international success in the pool. Last year was a breakout year for MacLean. She won her first international competition medals. She took bronze in the 800m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games, and won a team silver as part of the 4x200m relay. MacLean’s success continued at the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia. She took bronze in the 800m

and 1,500m freestyle, setting national records in both. She won bronze as part of the 4x200m relay, and finished fourth in the 400m freestyle. MacLean’s older sister is Heather, the national swimmer who specializes in shorter distances. Heather also competed for Canada in the 2012 Olympics. The younger MacLean star swimmer took to the pool at a young age, and joined the Etobicoke Swim Club at age seven. “I could not imagine my

Brittany MacLean, left, will compete July 18 in the women’s 800m freestyle. Alex Loginov will compete on July 17 in the men’s 50m freestyle.

Columbia international relations student flies to Toronto July 8 with other Pan Am athletes for the Games July 10 to 26. Loginov competes on Friday, July 17 at the Pan Am pool in Scarborough. The 23-year-old from Etobicoke is a fast swimmer. In fact, speed is his race. The 50m freestyle is the shortest competition distance. “What I like to get out of my race is to get the fastest possible speed I can achieve. My mentality is to get up to my fastest speed and hold it,” he said. His personal best in the 50m freestyle was 22.30 and 1:07.28 in the 100m freestyle in April at the Canadian Swimming Trials. Loginov was late to swimming. He took to the pool at age 13, and got lapped by eight- and nine-year-olds: “I had a lot of catching up to do.” He did. His family moved from Ukraine to Canada in 2008 and settled in North York. When Alex wanted to swim with the Etobicoke Swim Club, his family moved to Etobicoke. He then swam for the Toronto Swim Club his final year before university. Now on the cusp of his international career, Loginov acknowledged the strategy behind his race isn’t truly a strategy. Just swim – fast. “My goal in the Pan American Games is I want to be the best in my swimming career,” he reflected. “Everyone wants to win. I’m no exception. But I’m not going to stress over what I can’t control. What I can control is my race. I’ll focus on my preparation for the competition. After I’m done, I’ll reflect on how it all turned out.”

Pan Am Path: forever linking art with sports LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Taking the path of least resistance would never have allowed artist Devon Ostrum and a team of creative trailblazers to build a more connected Toronto. After curating Arrivals Canada, a series of multimedia projects focused on celebrating the stories of new citizens, Ostrum and his colleagues started brainstorming ways to uniquely link art and sport leading up to the Pan Am Games. “There’s a split between the downtown core and the inner suburbs,” Ostrum said. “We wanted to figure out ways to create not only physical connections, but also social and cultural connections.” The idea was born to build a legacy path that would fill in existing gaps and create one continuous trail from Brampton to Pickering. After eight months of

pan am games legacy behind-the-scenes selling, pitching, making mistakes and reformulating, the team had the Pan Am Path initiative approved by Toronto City Council in a 37-1 vote in July 2013. Ostrum formed the nonprofit organization Friends of the Pan Am Path to coordinate arts programming along the 84 kilometre multiuse trail, and put out an open call for submissions in four different languages. Fourteen ideas were chosen from more than 230 applications to form the basis of the Art Relay, a series of cultural events and celebrations that have been animating hotspots along the trail since May. From graffiti artists painting life into the concrete pillars at Underpass Park to discovering indigenous heritage through the First Story tours at Fort York, the Relay

encourages Torontonians to see their city through a new lens. Brent Chamberlain, chair of the Path said people are experiencing the treasures of Toronto’s diversity in a meaningful way.

“Public art turns spaces into places. It gets people out into the community and away from their TVs,” he said. Poet Renee McPhee, who shared her words at the Live Arts Festival event, applauded the organizers.

“Poetry has saved me in many ways. It’s good to have a moment and a space to share that with other people,” she said. Events are scheduled throughout the Games and the grand finale, Maadaadizi/

Summer Journeys, will end the Relay’s journey across the city in Rouge Hill Aug. 15. While the Friends have taken programming reigns, the city has been responsible for infrastructure. Cathy Vincelli, project director at Parks, Forestry and Recreation, said there are many cogs turning together to make the Path functional and enjoyable. Transportation Services, Metrolinx and Trans Canada Trail Ontario are just a few of the partners working in unison. “We want you to be able to get on a bike at one end of the city and ride through all its beauty to the end other end,” she said. “There are great views of the city from the Path, especially from the Sheldon Lookout at the mouth of the Humber River. It’s gorgeous.”

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job.

What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis.

Humber College hosts torch relay celebration pan am games torch relay TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Peter Milczyn got his spirits lifted Monday night at south Etobicoke’s Pan Am torch relay celebration. Literally. Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes hugged Milczyn, then lifted him up in the air, when a Pan Am official urged the boisterous crowd of hundreds to snap a photo and share it with #Toronto2015. “All of you coming here and showing your spirit, showing your interest in the showcase of the best athletics in the Americas. Go Canada Go!” Milczyn told the crowd. Babies in strollers, kids on dads’ shoulders, dogs of all sizes on-leash, students, couples and people on scooters descended on Col. Samuel Smith Park for the Pan Am torch relay’s community celebration in south Etobicoke. Music blasting from the main stage could be heard for city blocks.

The crowd erupted in cheers and chants of “Natalie! Natalie! Natalie!” as ice hockey gold medal Olympian Natalie Spooner ran the Pan Am torch into the waterfront park and lit the community cauldron

on stage. “I’m extremely proud to be able to experience this with the other torchbearers and all of you,” said Spooner, sporting Pan Am white and orange shorts and T-shirt.

“I’m super excited to welcome the world to Canada.” Spooner said she hoped she might inspire “other little girls to be the next torchbearers.” Humber College organized the

event at its Lakeshore campus as the torch relay’s community partner in south Etobicoke. Humber invited various community groups to host booths, including the local police division’s Community Police Liaison Committee, LAMP Community Health Centre, and Social Action for Equality, among others. Children and adults alike wandered the grassy grounds munching on burgers and fries and lapping up ice cream cones. Rizza Santamaria brought her son, 6, daughter, 5, and her fiveyear-old niece to join in the Pan Am fun. “I brought them to see the porcupine, and the torch, too,” she said. The “porcupine” she referred to is Pachi, the games’ mascot. Humber students Gaby Fernandez, 26, and Rebecca Leslie, 22, posed enthusiastically for a pic with Pachi. “We wanted to celebrate,” Leslie said.

Crowds cheering the arrival of the Pan Am flame at Albion Arena Tuesday evening during the Pan Am Games Torch Relay.

Hundreds turn out to welcome flame, party at Albion Arena

>>>from page 1 elite athlete, it’s rare that you get to immerse yourself in this part of things – you don’t get to see what’s going on behind the scenes, because your singular focus is your performance. “Today, I have goosebumps because the energy around this building and along the relay route was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Probably standing on the podium is as close as I can come to describe it.” No stranger to the Pan Am podium herself – she won silver medals in the 100-metre hurdles in both the 2003 and 2007 Games – Felicien had the honour of being one of the final torchbearers of Day 38 of the Torch Relay, as it made its northerly way through Etobicoke en route to Albion Arena. After handing the flame off to fellow torchbearer Mustafa “The Poet” Ahmed at the intersection of Albion and Kipling Avenue, Felicien and the entire Torch Relay entourage were greeted by several dozen cheering supporters who braved the grey skies to meet them in the parking lot. Meanwhile, inside the arena, several hundred more local residents awaited the Pan Am flame’s arrival at Tuesday’s event. The party at Albion Arena was in full swing even before the torch arrived, with activities ranging from face-painting, torch-making and “Wiggle” lessons courtesy of Pachi, to lively on-stage performances from Jerry Jerome and the Cardells, a Calypso steel pan group; singer and choreographer Shiamak Davar, a.k.a the “Guru of Dance”; the Toronto Dance Team; and Indo-Canadian singer Parichay. Among those enjoying the indoor festivities were Kipling Avenue area resident Susanne Holder and her

brood of four – Ranjay, 9, Ranjake, 7, Ranise, 2, and Randrew, nine months. While her facepainted kids enjoyed making their very own Pan Am torches and showcasing their basketball skills on the inflatable hoops set up for the event, Holder said she was most looking forward to witnessing the Pan Am flame’s arrival “Just the feeling of it, you know? I never experienced it before, so it’s new to me,” she said. “I just want to see what it’s all about and feel like I was part of it in a small way.” As Holder, her children and the rest of the crowd at the arena looked on, 18-year-old torchbearer Ahmed held his Pan Am torch aloft so that its flame could be safely transferred to a special lantern for the night. “I feel incredible...it’s incredible to represent the City of Toronto,” Ahmed, a renowned Regent Park spoken word artist, said of being selected as a torchbearer. “More than just the Games, the city itself has so much to offer in terms of art and culture and so it’s an incredible honour.” Also on hand to greet the Pan Am flame’s arrival were Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti and MP Kirsty Duncan. “We are absolutely thrilled that the torch is passing through our part of Etobicoke so that our families and our children have the opportunity to be part of history, to be part of the Pan Am Games, to be part of this celebration of sport and culture, and to be inspired by these outstanding and amazing athletes,” Duncan said.

Bloor West Royal LePage 3 simple decor updates to celebrates grand reopening get your home ready to sell On June 23rd, Royal LePage Real Estate Services Ltd. celebrated the reopening of their Bloor West Village office after an extensive renovation. Among the festivities was a ribbon cutting, food, refreshments and cake.

From left to right: Phil Soper, president and CEO of Royal LePage Canada, and Gus Monteleone, broker/manager of Royal LePage Bloor West Village branch; Al Orlando, broker/manager of Royal LePage Kingsway branch, Gino Romanese, senior vice president and broker for Royal LePage Real Estate Services, Phil Soper and Gus Monteleone; Gus Monteleone and Vivian Kaldas, branch administrator of Royal LePage Bloor West Village.

Starting a new life in a new home is an exciting milestone for families and couples. However, for many home buyers, this ray of excitement comes with a cloud of stress to make the necessary updates so that your home is in tip top shape and ready to sell. Before knocking down walls and replacing every appliance, there are several small renovations that home owners can do to create the best possible impression and get the highest resale value. Try these simple home décor updates to revitalize your home and give it a fresh and impressive new look. 1. Let the light in: Good light is a top priority for many potential home buyers when considering a space. Easily add brightness to any room by taking down drapes, thoroughly cleaning windows, increasing the wattage of light bulbs and updating lampshades. A bright and cheery home will be instantly more sellable. 2. Update door hardware: One small change that can make a big impact to the look of a space is replacing door handles and locks. Consider whether you need to replace locks, knobs, and other door hardware and ensure that it coordinates with the rest of your home interior. This simple replacement is the perfect final touch to any project.

www.homefinder.ca

3. Add a fresh coat of paint: Changing wall colours can completely transform any room in your home. Not only is it one of the simplest and most affordable renovations to make but it is also one that can be easily updated at a later time. Colours are what add personality to home décor, but keep in mind that everyone brings a unique personality and preferences to a home. With this in mind, if you’re choosing a trending new colour for your walls keep it in a neutral tone to get mass appeal from home buyers. Implement these renovation tips to entice any potential buyers for your home.

Theatre matriarch Mary Thorton continues to inspire Ninety-nine-year-old says retirement is not on the books LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Sitting in the bustling, jazzfilled dining room in front of a plate of her authentic Italian lasagna, Mary Thorton quizzes, “What’s a word you can use in reaction to anything? Good or bad, big or small, happy or sad?” After a few head scratches and wrong guesses she answers, “Wow.” A better word could not be chosen to vivify Thorton. The 99-year-old matriarch of Famous People Players (FPP) has done everything from design lavish dresses as a couturier at her own store to playing the frivolous Musetta in La Boheme with the Hamilton Opera Company. And she’s far from retired. “I’ll retire when I’m in that box,” Thorton said. “I’ve got to be 10 steps ahead of Father Time, God willing. Life is too beautiful.”

When her daughter Diane Dupuy founded FPP in 1974, Thorton became the designated master of puppets, handcrafting the whimsical neon characters and thingamabobs that now illuminate childhood memories across North America. Thorton said she made more than 22,000 props over her 38 years on the job. Dupuy said her mother has always believed in exploring creativity, and has helped her turn playing with puppets behind the chesterfield at home into a lifelong dreamcome-true. “She is very much an entrepreneur. She took a lot of risks,” Dupuy said. “That’s what entrepreneurs do. They jump out of planes without parachutes.” Now, the near centenarian has put down the glue gun and works six days a week at the theatre picking up the phones and doing all of the laundry. “It’s not a chore. It’s a lovely

the hundred that are happy,” she said. “I like to win them over.” One person she won over, without even trying, was Mary Morganelli, an artist from King City. The two met at FPP last New Year’s Eve and after a single conversation, Morganelli pledged to paint her. “I fell in love with her character, her personality, her smile,” Morganelli said. “It’s hard to explain. She’s just so warm. I was so attached to her that one moment I met her.” During the premiere performance of Under the Big Top on June 26, Thorton was called up to the stage and surprised with a beautiful portrait Morganelli had painted from a photograph she took the day they met. Thorton was completely caught off guard and burst into tears. A rousing applause filled the theatre as patrons reached for tissues. Her impact was palpable. Thorton said the secret to living a full life lies in the letter C.

“Consequences: I never made a decision without knowing what I would face if things went wrong. Commitment: You have to keep your word. If you make a promise, you keep it. That builds character. Comedy: This one will keep you afloat. That releases all of your tension. What you were worried about yesterday doesn’t mean anything today.” People inspired by Thorton’s zest, passion, wisdom and sharp wit, will likely look to the letter W to describe her inspiring spirit: Wow.

Bike Share Toronto bounces back Etobicoke streets to be spared from money woes with expansion traffic headaches during Games Its future was once in doubt, now Bike Share Toronto has announced plans to expand its operations. The once cash-strapped bike share program which was handed over to the Toronto Parking Authority last year now has 4,000 members. This week it announced Metrolinx will contribute $5 million to double the bike share’s offerings to 2,000 bikes and 160 docking stations by the end of 2016. Under the terms of the deal, the new rides will appear not just in Toronto but in other Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area municipalities which want them. BIKE LANEs coming to city core? wadditional

It appears Toronto council will approve expansion of bike lanes recently installed on Adelaide and Richmond street. The painted lanes were added last year as part of a pilot project. This week,

If the decision is approved, construction will take place after the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. SIGNS SLATED FOR QUEEN’S QUAY wTRAFFIC

More traffic signs will appear at the new Queen’s Quay in an effort to make the re-configured street more understandable to befuddled drivers. The roadway opened up last month following years of construction with expanded sidewalks, a new cycle track and streetcar service moved to the median. In an effort to promote transit etiquette during the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games the TTC has released several short online videos starring its infamous Morphs. The colourful – though somewhat creepy – characters mime various examples of “courteous commuter” behaviour, from proper disposal of a newspaper (hint: you don’t throw it on the floor) to keeping one’s bag off the seat. Shuttle from Kipling Stn. to BMX park offered July 11

The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games aren’t expected to cause too many traffic headaches in Etobicoke this summer. With just two official Games venues in Etobicoke – the Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre, 256 Centennial Park Rd., and the Pan Am Bowling Centre, 5555 Eglinton Ave. W. – traffic impacts will be limited to just one short-term, partial road closure. The northbound lane of Centennial Park Boulevard will be closed between Rathburn Road and Eglinton Avenue West on Saturday, July 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the Pan Am BMX event at the new

pan am games traffic Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre. With only limited parking available on-site at Centennial Park for patrons of the Pan Am BMX event, organizers are urging ticket-holders to make use of a dedicated accessible shuttle transport from Kipling Station to the vicinity of the BMX spectator entrance. Meanwhile, no road closures are expected to be associated with the Pan Am Bowling competition, which is slated to run from July 22 to 25 at Etobicoke’s Planet Bowl bowling alley. No parking will be available on-site at the Pan Am Bowling Centre, so ticket-holders are again urged to take advantage of a dedicated accessible shuttle transport between Kipling Station and the venue. There are also no anticipated road closures connected to the use of the Etobicoke Olympium,

590 Rathburn Rd., as an aquatics training site for both the Pan and Parapan Am Games, which run from July 10 to 26 and Aug. 7 to 15, respectively. While local traffic impacts are expected to be minimal here in Etobicoke, Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games organizers are nonetheless asking all residents to consider alternate means of transportation while attempting to navigate the city this summer. “We are encouraging people to carpool, take transit, cycle or walk – anything to reduce the traffic congestion,” Gary Jamieson, team lead with the Ministry of Transportation’s Pan/Parapan Am Games branch, said back in April at Games info session. “We’re urging residents to carpool to work and to avoid traveling during rush hours.” – Cynthia Reason, with a file from Tamara Shephard

COMPASS team promises to solve traffic woes fast RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com

PAN AM GAMES TRAFFIC

With only a couple of days to go before the Toronto Pan Am Games officially get underway, organizers responsible for co-ordinating transportation planning during the athletic spectacle insist they’re ready. Games organizers have already unveiled the main components of a plan intended to reduce overall traffic volumes by 20 per cent, something they say is attainable. Congestion has been a frequent concern in the build-up to the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, and officials have warned of frequent road closures, heavy traffic and other challenges while the Games take place from July 10-26. Already unveiled are temporary HOV carpool lanes established on major roadways which allow anyone with at least three people in

a vehicle to make use of them, but bar all other vehicles from using them for most hours of the day. “If traffic is not a story during the Pan Am Games I think we’ll have been successful,” Stephen Erwin said. Erwin is in charge of operations at the province’s new COMPASS Transportation Management Centre, which recently opened near Hwy. 400 and Finch Avenue. He and his team of traffic analysts will work around the clock during the Games monitoring 240 separate camera feeds in the centre’s sprawling control room, depicting traffic patterns from Toronto to Niagara. When an incident occurs, anything from debris on the road to a major collision resulting in fatalities, Erwin and his team will be tasked with getting out that informa-

The province's new transportation management centre will allow analysts to monitor 240 screens of traffic during the upcoming Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

tion to the public, providing alternative travel options and helping to co-ordinate with police for lane and bridge closures if necessary. The team will also update highway digital road signs to provide information such as estimated travel times all in the effort to provide as little

inconvenience as possible, as well as get traffic updates out via social media and the media. “Trying to provide the public an ability to predict what their travel is going to be like day-to-day takes away a lot of the anxiety,” said Erwin during a tour of the centre at

the end of June. “It at least gives a sense of how long it will take to go through various areas.” The $25 million facility opened in March and will also house the Games’ Unified Transportation Coordination Centre, where representatives from an alphabet soup of municipal and provincial agencies from the OPP to the TTC can quickly consult and plan in response to a major emergency. Both the TTC and GO Transit are allowing those holding a valid Games ticket to make use of those services at no extra cost on the day of their events. There are also new routes which will provide shuttle service directly to city venues, as well as opportunities to buy fares online and via mobile applications. At a recent news conference TTC deputy CEO Chris Upfold insisted the transit commission, despite being beset by delays on regular days, is up

to the task of delivering tens of thousands of Games goers to their venues on time and without hassle. He said the estimated 1,600 station ambassadors, made of TTC volunteers who have given up vacation time in order to help out during the Games, will even try to make travel on the Better Way fun. With commute times expected to increase by an average of seven minutes during the Games, getting around over the next couple of months will require patience and planning, said Toronto Pan Am senior vice president Allen Vansen. “This plan can’t succeed without everyone knowing what the traffic impacts will be and the steps they can take to ensure the Toronto region shines on a global stage during the Games,” he said.

Summer is finally here. But after months of dark, dreary days, chances are you may need a refresher in how to keep your family sun-safe. Banana Boat sun care has partnered with dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll to recommend these five ways to protect your family’s skin this summer: • Keep it handy - Sunscreen should be applied before heading outdoors, so keep a bottle handy on the kitchen counter, or the front hall of your house, to make this easier to remember. Don’t forget your ears, lips, shoulders and nose. • You always need it - Even if you are only planning to drive from one indoor location to another, UVA rays can penetrate glass so get in the habit of applying sunscreen as part of your family’s morning routine, just like brushing your teeth! • Limit exposure - The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so although sunscreen is an excellent defence, take extra precaution during this time, including limiting sun exposure and wearing a hat and protective clothing. • Be generous - Adults should use about one ounce or 30mL of sunscreen (about the size of a golf ball) each time they apply sunscreen. • Choose your product - With many product options, from sport-specific to general protection, pick the one that suits your activity best.

How to avoid unhealthy habits at the workplace Working professionals spend an average of 8.5 hours per day at work. Many professionals spend much of their time at work sitting down in front of a computer, which can be detrimental to longterm health. Staying sedentary for long periods of time can contribute to a host of health ailments, including being overweight and obese. But professionals who work in offices can take various steps to ensure that time at work is not having an adverse affect on their overall health. • Get out of your seat. Modern workplaces are built around sitting, so workers must find some time to stand up and stretch. Sitting too long can compromise posture and lead to craning of the neck for looking at the computer screen. Get out of your chair, walk around the office and get the blood moving in your body. • Pack your lunch. Bringing lunch to work puts you in greater control over the foods you are eating. You can pack a healthy and diverse selection of foods. Don’t forget to also bring some snacks that offer a healthy mix of protein and carbohydrates to keep your energy levels up. Otherwise, you may succumb to the temptation of the lunchroom snack machine. • Take frequent breaks. Stale air inside an office

environment can make you feel fatigued and less productive. Also, spending too much time behind your desk may contribute to feelings of stress and tension. Use every opportunity possible to get up and leave your office. Instead of sending an instant message or making a phone call to a coworker, visit him or her in person. Use your lunch hour to get outside instead of eating at your desk. Plan a brief, mid-afternoon walk outside of your office to clear your mind and get some fresh air. • Disinfect surfaces often. Oftentimes, when one person at the office gets sick, many others soon follow. Colds and the flu can spread rapidly in close quarters. Keep your desk drawer stocked with some alcohol swabs or disinfecting spray and routinely clean your keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, and desk surfaces. You also can wipe off door handles and knobs around the office if you want to be proactive. • Rest your eyes. Close your eyes and look away from the computer monitor every 20 minutes. Focusing on objects of varying distances can help keep the eyes strong and reduce fatigue. It’s not difficult to remain healthy at work. Breaks, exercise and watching what you eat can help.

Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Treating abnormal gut flora key to ADD, autism and allergies Fast food, pharmaceuticals and environmental factors impose a heavy burden on our children, which is expressed through allergies, physical and neurological symptoms. When looking closely at children with ADD, autism and allergies, often they have one thing in common, insufficient gut flora. This can be caused by lack of breast-feeding, excessive antibiotic treatment in infancy, and reactions to the usual vaccinations. When dealing with children with ADD, autism and allergies, the natural course of action is to take your child to the doctor. However, most doctors will only treat the symptoms and provide a “bandaid” solution rather than looking at the whole picture of health. Instead of focusing on the symptoms, a naturopathic doctor will treat the root cause of the problem, which can be found in the gut. Faulty diet enhances the symptoms and plays a huge role in maintaining the same symptoms, which will not respond to natural or orthodox interventions. In order to treat these symptoms, presented as ADD, autism and allergies, a naturopathic doctor

will look at the cause, medical history and current symptoms simultaneously. The child’s diet must be addressed and modified according to symptoms severity and periodicity. In general, no treatment of allergic symptoms will be successful if diet is not addressed and intestinal flora is restored. As well, blood testing is valuable to assess allergen loads in the blood. For more information about how your child’s gut flora relates to allergies, contact 416-207-0207 or visit www.inaturopath.ca.

Walk to Ottawa raises $13K for FEAT for Children ALI RAZA etg@insidetoronto.com Swollen feet, shin splints and infected blisters weren’t enough to stop Jessica Reid on her mission to raise awareness and funds to help children of incarcerated parents. As the co-founder of the Etobicoke-based not-forprofit organization FEAT (Fostering, Empowering, Advocating, Together) for Children of Incarcerated Parents, Reid walked from Toronto to Ottawa to gain support of communities across Ontario as part of the

Feet for FEAT walkathon. She started the walk from Ryerson University on June 7 and – after walking 40 kilometres per day – arrived at Parliament Hill on June 16 with overworked ankles and sore legs. The mission brought FEAT closer to its goal of $40,000 by raising $13,000 for the purchase of a bus. “It took a week to recover,” Reid said. “But we still have more to raise because our bus supports all of our programs.” Currently, FEAT leases a bus to take children and their families on trips to visit

with games and activities to comfort them.

As a not-for-profit organization, an outright purchase of a bus is more affordable. FEAT exists to tackle the social stigma around having a parent in prison, she said. “They (children) feel they can’t talk to their teachers or peers about it,” she explained. “They struggle with feelings of sadness and anger and they have no outlet.” Youth who don’t have outlets to express themselves turn to “maladaptive” ways and the cycle continues, she said. The idea for FEAT sparked in 2011 when Reid was teach-

ing in Leduc, Alberta at a learning centre for at-risk youth. One of her students told her: “I just wish I could hug my dad and tell him how much I love him.” From originally helping five families, FEAT now supports 500 families across Ontario with three or four new families getting involved every week. It’s not just visitations. FEAT helps students with after-school programs, peer mentorships and community outreach projects.

Concrete company appealing decision

Silver Cross Toronto is your go to source for sales, installation and service of home medical

when available. We are ADP authorized.

The city has denied a Mimico concrete batching company adjacent to a residential neighbourhood consent to relocate Metrolinx’s easement on its property. Susanne Pringle, manager and deputy secretary treasurer of the Committee of Adjustment Etobicoke York Panel, last month refused Remicorp Industries Inc.’s consent application. “The applicant has not received consent from the easement holder (Metrolinx) to relocate the existing easement,” Pringle wrote in her decision. “The applicant has not demonstrated the need for the relocation of the existing easement.” Re m i c o r p ow n s a n d operates ML Ready Mix Concrete. An easement is defined by the city as a “right of use” of someone else’s property by another party for a specific purpose. Metrolinx objected to

having its access and maintenance easement on Remicorp’s lands relocated. It is unclear why Remicorp wants to relocate Metrolinx’s easement. But Remicorp’s lawyers confirmed the company is appealing Pringle’s decision to the Ontario Municipal Board. “Since it was granted by our client, Metrolinx has never used, or made a request to use, the easement,” Remicorp’s lawyer John Alati said in a statement. The ML Ready Mix facility at 29 Judson St. is on the south side of a residential street near the Mimico GO Train station, across from a park, seniors’ residence and adjacent houses. Dan Irwin, who lives directly across the street from ML Ready Mix, lauded Pringle’s decision. Irwin said he and other residents collected more than 500 signatures on a petition submitted to the city committee objecting to the company’s easement relocation application.

Meanwhile, company owners and residents await the province’s Environmental Re v i e w Tr i b u n a l d e c i sion on the company’s appeal of its Ministry of the Environment-issued amended Environmental Compliance Approval. Alati said the company’s appeal is related to permitted truck traffic, record keeping and hours of operation. The pitched battle between company officials and neighbouring residents began in 2007 when the concrete facility began operating. The Ministry of the Environment has said it learned of the operation the following year. Some neighbouring residents have complained for years to the city and provincial ministry about the frequency and hours of trucks rumbling in and out of the facility, and the accompanying dust. ML Ready Mix operated without ministry environmental approvals until 2013, which further exacerbated tensions between it and adjacent residents.

Benedetti athlete of the month Stefano Benedetti is 19 years old and has lived in Etobicoke all his life. He started playing tennis when he was eight years old at Central Tennis Club located in Etobicoke. He could never get enough tennis and used to play on the wall of his house almost every day. He took his first tennis lesson with Stan Palmateer and became hooked on the sport. Benedetti was always fixated on watching tennis on TV and was lucky enough to visit Wimbledon when he was 13. He and his mom got up at 4 a.m. and queued for hours, managing to obtain tickets for the third court. Before being introduced to tennis, Benedetti played rep soccer and hockey but quit both sports when he was 11 because he just wanted to focus on tennis and become a better player. He convinced his mother to register him in a tennis academy and trained first at Players’ Edge and later with TTA at Mayfair West. He was

always either training or on the court with friends. Benedetti first began playing competitively for the junior inter-county team at Central Tennis Club when he was 10 and at 15 was asked to play on the Men’s A team. He started playing OTA competitive tennis from the time he was 11 and won a number of tournaments. Since he was 14 he qualified regularly for the provincials and he

also represented Team Ontario in both the 2014 Indoor and Outdoor Nationals. Benedetti attended Bishop Allan Academy and played doubles for the tennis team and placed third in the boys open division at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial championships in 2013. In 2014 he received a scholarship from Missouri Valley College to play tennis in the United States where he is enrolled in a four-year B. Sc. program in Exercise Science. “Stefano has worked very hard to earn his current tennis achievements. As he reaches his prime and maintains his work ethics, I’m sure he will have more trophies on his mantle,” says Joanne Noble, Chair of the Board for the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. The Athlete of the Month is sponsored by The Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame, Humber College, Canadian Tire – The Queensway and The Etobicoke Guardian. >>>from page 1 evening of Monday, June 29, the parking lot was full and on-site police officers directed them to the other side of the park. “ When we got there, we saw many cars already (parked) on the grass, so we thought that was the place to park. And why should it be a problem? We were attending a city event and weren’t blocking any traffic,” he explained, adding that he felt “stupefied” when he returned to his car a few hours later to find a $100 ticket waiting on his windshield. “We felt it was a setup – we had no place to park and the police sent us in that direction, instead of having a policeman telling us not to park there. And after, we see a ticket?” Upset by the unpleasant surprise that greeted them after an otherwise enjoyable evening, Mauricio said he and his mother, Maria Reis, promptly set up an online petition upon their return home that night in an attempt to rally other festival-goers to fight the fines. “I wanted the people to get the courage to fight this in court,” he explained. “It is easier when we know we are all together.” The petition – which can be found at www.ipetitions. com/petition/ribfest-parking-ticket-fine – has since received 98 signatures (as of Wednesday morning), including many from Ribfest attendees like Denise, who had likewise been ticketed. “We were at Centennial Park Ribfest on July 1 celebrating a wonderful afternoon, until we arrived back to our car and found a $100 parking fine,” wrote Denise, noting that she estimated there were 200 vehicles with tickets on their windshields that day. According to Anthony Fabrizi, manager of parking tags with the city’s Revenue Services division, the ticket Mauricio and Reis found on their windshield on June 29 was just one of 116 issued that day on Centennial Park Road between the festival hours of noon and 10 p.m.

he said. “Needless to say, the Rotary Club of Etobicoke will try and work with the city to ensure this doesn’t happen again at the Toronto Ribfest, which only exists to provide people and families a fun, memorable experience, while raising money for important community organizations.” Etobicoke Centre Councillor Stephen Holyday, who attended Toronto Ribfest on Canada Day, said he was likewise upset about the issuance of parking tickets to festival-goers. His office, he noted, has so far received four complaints from Ribfest attendees ticketed last week. “Since then we’ve placed a number of inquiries with the management at 22 Division parking to find out what happened,” he said Tuesday, noting that he has yet to hear back. “...It’s an ongoing concern right now in our office, as we’d like residents to be happy and to consider their visit to the Ribfest to be a successful one, because someone might not go back (to Ribfest) because of this. Most important to us is to mitigate this from happening again next year.” As for Mauricio, he said he has every intention of taking his concerns to court: “We plan to fight the ticket.”

Ribfest visitors take their ribs home and head for the car on a rainy day during the annual event this year. Some patrons received $100 tickets for parking on the grass at the event and an online petition has been started.

“Some were for blocking a fire hydrant...Some tickets were issued for parking in the park,” he wrote in an email to The Guardian. As of Tuesday, about 10 per cent of those ticketed at Ribfest on June 29 had paid the fine, he noted, while others have requested a trial. “While it’s unfortunate that drivers were ticketed, there is no provision to simply cancel or reduce the fines. Rather, in accordance with the city’s Parking Ticket Cancellation Guidelines, each ticket would need to be reviewed individually and consider the driver’s circumstances, ticket history, nature of the offence, etc.,” he added. For more information on parking ticket disputes, Fabrizi urged residents to go to www.bit.ly/1vlkUfG Toronto Ribfest Director Hugh Williams, meanwhile, said the Rotary Club of Etobicoke was dismayed to learn of the parking tickets – especially since he said the city knew that, due to heavy weekend rainfall, festival organizers had lost the use of their “major parking area” on the Hollycrest School grounds, which in the past has accommodated “several hundred vehicles”. “We are very disappointed that cars were being ticketed in places where they posed no safety or liability risk...”

Hat designer takes second place in Queen’s Plate millinery competition TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Spirited Away ran strong to a second-place finish at last Sunday’s Queen’s Plate. It’s not a fast, well-trained thoroughbred. But rather Etobicoke milliner Amparo Findlay’s customdesigned, finalist hat entry in the second annual Millinery Design Competition at the Queen’s Plate. “I’m very pleased,” Findlay said. “It was quite exciting. Because everyone is dressed to the nines, you feel like there is a real sense of occasion.” Findlay’s fashion-forward headpiece is espresso in colour, with brown silk trim, its crown and embellishments created with sinamay, an open-weave fabric she sculpted to give the hat height. “It is my modern interpretation of horse racing,” said Findlay of her design, which took approximately 30

I randomly placed the cords on the crown in different circular designs to represent lines and fluidity of lines.” Findlay and four other George Brown College millinery graduates presented their designs on stage in front of a live, “enthusiastic” crowd and a judges’ panel at the Hats and Horseshoes Party. Online voters determined the five finalists. Findlay won $500, the

winner took home $1,000, and the third-place finisher received $300. Findlay took second place in last year’s contest. The award-winning hat designer plans to invest her winnings in her luxury brand sold on her online company, Hatitude. The majority of her clients want a commissioned piece or a custom variation of one of her designs, sometimes in a smaller or larger size, she said. Currently, she is filling custom hat orders and building an inventory to sell at the upcoming cancer fundraiser Polo for the Cure 2015 in Aurora, Ont., Sunday, July 19. Bright pink is Polo for the Cure’s signature colour. “I’m incorporating pink ribbon and pink flowers into my designs,” Findlay said.
