Dozens of oil-slicked ducks were plucked from Mimico Creek by net-toting rescuers from the Toronto Wildlife Centre Tuesday, following an Etobicoke oil spill that’s currently under investigation. “They are all absolutely covered in oil – completely head to toe,” Andrew Wight, Toronto Wildlife Centre’s rescue team lead, said of the rescued ducks, which he numbered at least 30 and counting at around 12:30 p.m. on July 14. “This is by far the largest incident that we’ve ever had, just by sheer numbers,” he added. W h i l e t h e Mi n i s t r y o f Environment continues to investigate the source of the spill, Toronto Fire District Chief Stephan Powell tentatively identified the oily substance as a mineral oil that potentially leaked into the creek following a nearby traffic accident on Monday evening. “A truck that turned over in the northwest end of the city (Monday) night was carrying some transformers with mineral oil.
