Police nearly nabbed a suspect in the latest in a long string of summertime breakand-enters in south Etobicoke early Saturday morning, quickly tracking the man down in a foot chase after receiving yet another report that a local woman had awoken to an intruder standing over her bed.

“Police, who are alerted to the fact that we have had a number of incidences of break-and-enters in the area, responded very quickly and were able to engage a male suspect in a foot pursuit,” Const.

David Hopkinson said of police efforts to catch the suspect, who reportedly stole the woman’s wallet, cellphone and laptop.

Patrick Etienne Blain is the sole male dancer representing Canada in the prestigious Cecchetti International Ballet Competition in August.

“He has had this talent and promise since he was a young boy.”

The renowned Boutilier had a ballet career with Ballet Florida, The National Ballet of Canada where he became a soloist within three years and the Canadian Opera Company. His ballet partners included Canadian prima ballerinas Karen Kain and Veronica Tennant. He performed before the Queen during the 1967 Canadian Centennial celebrations, and in Europe.

Beyond his dance acumen, Blain “has a real innocence about him,” Boutilier said. “He’s very sincere, very caring, very humble. He’s a gentleman to his partners.”

Like Boutilier, Blain overcame peer pressure and at times, sagging confidence, Boutilier said.

“Like me, Patrick went through not being sure what he wanted to do. Every boy goes through that.

Then he just took off.”

Last year, Sean Boutilier Academy of Dance celebrated its 30th anniversary in Etobicoke. It has operated a second studio in Mississauga for more than 20 years.

It receives no government funding.

What differentiates his dance academy is the calibre of dance instructors, all accredited, indemand accompanying pianists, and instructors’ focus on high technical standards, Boutilier said.

Boutilier said he sold his home to buy his academy’s first owned space.

In recent years, he used his home as collateral to pay for a renovation of the existing Etobicoke school to include a dancers’ lounge and study area.

Marathon council session focuses on councillors

C

ouncil’s marathon July meeting stretched out for four days last week. It wouldn’t have gone nearly as long as that, were it not for several juicy items irresistible to councillors in an election year: themselves.

Council spent Tuesday evening, most of Wednesday and a good chunk of Thursday talking about reports from, and the future of, the city’s accountability officers.

A morning and part of an afternoon was spent extracting an apology from Mayor Rob Ford for robocalls; an afternoon closing on the evening was spent extracting a few months of salary from Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti; and another morning was passed, notquite extracting Toronto Ombudsman Fiona Crean from her job.

As time-consuming as these were, each of these debates were extraordinary in their way.

The matter of Mayor Ford’s apology to Councillor Paul Ainslie was unique, in

david nickle the city that Mayor Ford did in fact apologize. At the end of the long debate, Ford returned to the council chamber and said sorry for robocalling every house in Ainslie’s Scarborough East ward last year to tell them how he hadn’t consulted with them about his vote against the Scarborough subway, when in fact Ainslie had consulted rather a lot.

There wasn’t much at stake in that matter: Ford has not done what the Integrity Commissioner has asked in the past, and gotten away with it without consequence.

There was a great deal more at stake in the matter of Councillor Mammoliti, who in the end lost three months’ pay over a $80,000 “gift” he received from a fundraiser that the Integrity Commissioner maintained to be improper. Mammoliti disputes many elements of

the Integrity Commissioner’s report on the matter, but council was unswayed and overwhelmingly voted to effectively take $26,000 from Councillor Mammoliti.

The matter of Mammoliti’s pay cut marks the first time in Toronto’s history that council has voted to impose a monetary penalty against one of their own.

The penalty is somewhat diminished by the fact that it is so much less than the amount of money that Mammoliti received. But under the rules as they’re written, council could do no more: three months’ pay is as much penalty as an Integrity Commissioner can recommend and council can impose.

Council did the right thing there, and also, in a manner of speaking, in the matter of the future of Toronto’s Ombudsman Fiona Crean. A critical mass of councillors, including those stung by her criticism of their work on the Toronto Community Housing board and the

Public Appointments Committee, made the prospect of garnering the 30 votes necessary to extend Crean’s appointment impossible.

But a simple majority was all it took to punt the decision to the newly-elected council in 2015.

It would have been an awful message to send to accountability officers that their future depended on maintaining good relations with badly-behaving councillors.

Council took care of some other, real city business too during those four days – business that had nothing to do with themselves. But even if they hadn’t, at least they were able to finish their penultimate council meeting on something resembling an ethical highground when it came to understanding their roles and obligation.

Family of girl with juvenile arthritis thanks Sir Adam Beck Junior School community for support and kindness To the editor: Last year, The Etobicoke Guardian ran a story on our daughter Jessica, a young arthritis patient chosen to lead a SickKids charity event.

However, Jessica’s story really started at the age of 20 months old when she began showing signs of swelling and stiffness throughout her body.

She stopped crawling and walking and was quickly referred to SickKids hospital, where she was formally diagnosed with Po l y a r t i c u l a r Ju v e n i l e Idiopathic Arthritis.

After being put on a combination of anti-inflammatory and pain reducer medication, undergoing surgery and receiving weekly injections

of an immune suppressant, Jessica was put back on the right path to leading a relatively healthy and active lifestyle of a toddler.

Fast forward. Jessica is now five and just finished junior kindergarten at Sir Adam Beck Junior School.

Midsummer Night’s Run Recently, the school rallied together to not only bring awareness to juvenile arthritis, but to raise funds for Jessica and her team of supporters who will be participating again in the Midsummer Night’s Run Saturday, Aug. 16.

With the support of the principal, Michael Kanalec, and a Grade 3 teacher, Sally Warburton, we held an

assembly and told Jessica’s story.

We had a student volunteer put on extra clothing while wearing oven mitts to represent juvenile arthritis.

We stressed that the oven mitts didn’t stop the volunteer from achieving her goal, but it did add additional obstacles to overcome.

It also didn’t come with the chronic pain that children with juvenile arthritis endure every day.

The community response was unbelievable and in five days the school raised $1,330.35 for Team Jessica.

As a family, we are overwhelmed by the support the community has shown and are so incredibly grateful.

This event not only brings awareness to juvenile arthri-

tis, but also shows how a school community rallied together for one of their own students, to support her in a way she will remember for the rest of her life. thank you We would just like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who got involved, and let the community know their support does not go unnoticed and their actions have reassured us we are not alone in this battle. You have given us hope that maybe, one day, a cure will be found for this crippling illness that affects one in every 1,000 children in Canada.

Call the sport by its real name; football not soccer To the editor: Recently, I phoned your newsroom about the most popular sport on Earth – football.

The sport is very popular in about 220 countries around the world. All countries play and talk about football - not ‘soccer’.

The Americans play a different game with both hands and helmets and call the sport American football.

Why do some newspapers in Canada not write about football, but instead call it

soccer?

Some years ago I was a football coach at the Kingsway Football Club in Etobicoke.

All the little boys did talk about was football, not soccer.

Some years ago I was on vacation in Rio, Brazil – where the World Cup just took place.

I was at the Maracana ‘Football’ Stadium.

Call the sport football, as it’s called around the world.

REXDALE’S TIERRA HOHN KNOWS what it takes to overcome body image issues and an eating disorder. As a teen, the now-21year-old became fixated on dieting and excessive exercise, dipped down to just 100 pounds and was diagnosed with anorexia. Since recovering, the Public Affairs and Policy Management student at Carleton University has dedicated the last three years to reaching out to other young girls through her organization, Untouched Beauty, in the hopes of preventing them from struggling with the same body image issues she battled.

How early did your struggles with body image begin?

Actually, I think I’ve always had it. In my childhood I was a bit on the larger side and I experienced being picked on because of that, so I’ve always been self conscious of my weight. As I got older, in high school, I began experi-

first. I was in Grade 10 and I was 16 and I thought I needed to lose some weight, so I went on a diet and it just kind of got out of hand and it spiraled. I ended up losing more than 50 pounds, and I dropped down to about 100 pounds.

When did you/your family realize you needed help?

By that point, my family obviously began to notice that something was wrong, so they went around to different doctors to see what could be done, but the one issue that we came across was that it’s not something there’s a lot of help for.

For one thing, a lot of the doctors didn’t pick up on the signs, so I got a lot of them saying ‘Oh, just eat, it’s not a

encing some more challenges – people made comments and because I had already been so self-aware, it affected me a lot more.

It never starts as an eating disorder, it develops into one.

For me, it was just a diet at

big deal.’ But obviously it was – it was a mix of me just not eating and exercising excessively. It was anorexia.

Finally, my older sister got me into North York General Hospital’s eating disorders program...I was told when a doctor checked me out that I was having heart palpitations...They said ‘we need to get you help now, because you’re at risk of cardiac arrest,’

because I was at such a low weight.

I was still in denial about what was going on and I didn’t want help. But because I was still 16, my parents had to take control of the situation, so they decided it was the best thing for me at the time.

So I left school for the rest of the term, and I basically did school in the hospital.

What was the program like? Did you embrace it right away?

It was a day program, so I went home to sleep, but otherwise I was there from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Sundays.

I was there for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack and it was all very heavily

monitored, with doctors and social workers, and we had to follow a strict regimen of food intake.

I definitely didn’t (embrace treatment) in the beginning because I was still in that frantic stage...and very much

resistant to it, but I think once I started to re-nourish my body, once I started to gain a few pounds back, I started to come back into the realization that what I was doing was not healthy.

How did things go for you when you were released from treatment after five months?

I was physically better, and because of that a lot of people saw me and were automatically like ‘OK, she’s better, it’s fine, she can handle it now.’

But it was hard. At the hospital I was surrounded every day with support, but when you leave, you lose all that. I

the second time around, I made the decision for myself that this was not a lifestyle that I wanted to maintain, that I had bigger aspirations, and that I couldn’t achieve them if I was sick. So I made the choice to do what I could to get better.

How did Untouched Beauty come about? Tell us about the organization and the programming you run.

When I got to a point where I was feeling good about myself again, I decided I wanted to talk about what I had gone through and share my experience, because not a lot of people do that, so I started Untouched Beauty in 2011.

My motivation is to help empower young women and help them with their body image struggles and encourage them to look past that

mean, you come back every two weeks to see a counsellor and a doctor, but that’s about it... I ended up relapsing within a few months. It wasn’t to the same extent, but it was still a relapse.

(While the first time I was forced to go to the hospital),

and become stronger, more confident young people.

Through speaker series and workshops (at schools, community centres, after-school programs and various symposiums), I’ve shared my experiences and the little things that helped me feel more confident to find peace with myself.

The target of Untouched Beauty is girls aged 12 to 16...

and the feedback is always positive. Girls feel like not a lot of people share those kinds of experiences, and they really like hearing it from another young person. I don’t want there to ever be someone who feels they don’t have someone to reach out to. I feel like in the world we live in is already a cold world, so it’s nice to have people willing to reach out to you and to help.

What do you hope young girls and women take away from Untouched Beauty?

Really, just to love themselves and realize how important they are.

We often struggle to fit the cookie-cutter image that we see in the media and that society promotes, but it’s

not healthy and it’s not true to us.

What I’m trying to say is ‘be true to yourself and try to stay strong and take care of yourself. Don’t fall into the image that the media promotes.’

“We’re here because these small fixes are just BandAids,” said Lana Goldberg, spokesperson for Rising Tide Toronto, an environmental organization. “There are about 13,000 anomalies in the pipeline. Enbridge is only doing a couple hundred integrity digs...

“Here, it’s close to a populated neighbourhood and the Humber River, which drains into Lake Ontario and on which we’re dependent for drinking water.”

Enbridge denied the accusation.

An Enbridge spokesperson said the company uses in-line inspection technology that is magnetic resonance imaging, identical to MRI technology used in medicine, to view the pipeline internally and externally to a high level of detail. “ T h e s e t o o l s re p o r t everything. They can report a feature within a feature,” Enbridge spokesperson Graham White said from his Calgary office. “If there is a crack within a crack, they can report that no matter how low the depth is or how benign the feature.”

The “vast majority” of the 13,000 pipeline anomalies cited by protestors as making the pipeline unsafe are “benign,” White said.

Whether the anomaly identified is a crack, corrosion or a misshapen area or dent in the

pipe, the technology reports it. Enbridge then uses the data to inform where it conducts integrity digs so field observations can confirm the tool’s findings, White said.

“Then we fix it,” he said.

“If what we’re fixing are features we think could possibly cause an integrity issue five, 10, even 20 years down the road, we’re addressing it now.

That’s why we’re doing these digs. They’re critical aspects of the safety and maintenance of the line.” transmission concerns Goldberg and other protestors expressed concerns Enbridge will need to use higher temperatures and pressure within the pipeline to transport the oilsands’ diluted bitumen, known as dilbit. “That’s absolutely untrue,” Enbridge’s White said. “There’s a confusion and I believe it’s often a deliberate confusing of the issue.”

“Bitumen or any crude that comes out of the ground has to be processed before it can be sent down a long-haul transmission pipeline. That is what Enbridge does and that is what Line 9 is. Where it’s represented as just tarsands crude scraping down this pipeline is a complete scientific, industry and factual

misrepresentation of what transmission-grade crude is.

It supports their argument and causes undue concern amongst the people along this right-of-way who have hosted these pipelines, safely I might add in this case, for the past 40 years.”

In March, the National Energy Board approved Enbridge’s project with conditions after holding public hearings last October in which 160 participants spoke to pipeline integrity, spills and emergency response and Enbridge’s consultation efforts.

The board’s approval conditions include requiring the company to undertake activities regarding pipeline integrity, emergency response and continued consultation.

In 2012, the federal regulator approved the reversal of the western portion of Line 9, a 194-kilometre segment linking Sarnia, Ont. to North Westover.

Line 9B runs from North Westover to Montreal and will carry crude from Western Canada to Quebec’s refineries.

Enbridge is reversing the flow of Line 9B at the request of Quebec refineries, which want to access discounted western Canadian crude rather than its current highly proportional reliance on expensive foreign crude, White said.

“I think that’s what’s common to all these girls – they don’t think ‘oh there’s a problem, so I can’t do this or that.’ They think ‘oh, there’s a problem, so how do I solve that so we can do something good?’” she said.

“They all think creatively like that.”

For Rossetti – who is set to leave Bishop Allen after 19 years to take up a viceprincipal’s post at Michael Power/St. Joseph – having the opportunity to teach students has been “a very inspiring and very humbling” experience.

“It makes me really want to work hard for young people, because they deserve to have a really good start and a good education. Their desire to learn feeds into my desire to want to develop programs to make them more successful.”

Saturday’s break-in came hot on the heels of a similar incident the day before at a home in the Royal York Road and Evans Avenue area, where police were called at 4:35 a.m. on Friday morning.

“A woman awoke in the night, and was walking through her home when she realized that there was an intruder,” he said. “They made eye contact and the woman called police. The intruder fled.”

Whether or not these latest incidents can be tied to an ongoing police investigation into a sexual predator police believe is responsible for more than 20 break-and-enters and eight sexual assaults in the south Etobicoke area over the summers of 2012, 2013, and now 2014 is still to be determined.

June 7, when 22 Division and officers from the Sex Crimes Unit investigated two backto-back break-and-enters in the Royal York Road and Evans Avenue area.

During the first, it was reported that a man gained access to the home of a 63-year-old woman through a window at around midnight, and once inside, the man sexually assaulted the woman before fleeing the residence.

Police were then called back to the Royal York Road and Evans Avenue area again at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning, when it was reported that a male suspect gained access to the home of a 30-year-old woman via a back door. In that instance, the woman confronted the man inside the home and he fled the scene.

At the time, Det. Steve McIlwain said the two incidents shared similar modus operandi to break-and-enters and sexual assaults over the

previous two summers.

In each of those cases, he said, police reported that a man wearing a head covering was entering homes through unlocked doors and windows while residents are asleep, and sexually assaulting women once inside.

All of the offences have taken place during summer months – mainly between June and September – and the offender, McIlwain added, appears to target residences with unlocked doors or windows.

“The general M.O. seems to be entry through unlocked doors or windows with screens cut,” he told The Guardian in an interview in June. “So, certainly we would like to get information out there to residents to lock their doors and windows, and to remove anything from your yard that may assist anyone with gaining access to windows that are a little bit higher up.”

Residents are also urged to remain vigilant of any suspicious people in their neighbourhood, and to be mindful of things being moved on their property.

Residents, city reach deal over Park Lawn fence CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Park Lawn area residents are breathing a sigh of relief this week, after learning that the city has scrapped last-minute plans to construct a divisive, 76-metre-long fence through the middle of their park as part of a highly anticipated new pathway project.

Since learning of the City of Toronto’s proposed plan to erect a chain-link fence bordering the outfield of the baseball diamond at Park Lawn Park – a multi-use, open-site schoolyard/park that accommodates students from Park Lawn JMS, local soccer and baseball leagues, and community residents – last month, members of the Park Lawn Revitalization Committee made it their mission to put a stop to the fence, which they argued would pose a safety risk.

“In early June, I asked the city for a construction update and was shocked to learn that – because of the baseball league’s concern that players would run into the light poles – the city was planning to install a permanent, five-foot high,

250-foot long chain link fence on the north side of the walkway. If I hadn’t made that contact, it’s likely the fence would have been installed this summer without our knowledge,” said Sheila Chochinov, noting that the committee, together with the school’s advisory committee, soon thereafter launched a formal protest, hosting a community meeting on June 25, lobbying city councillors and senior Parks staff through social

media, and launching an online and print petition campaign that collected more than 500 signatures.

The Park Lawn Revitalization Committee was first struck nearly three years ago, when it was revealed that Section 37 funding would soon be available for park improvements at Park Lawn.

The committee, led by Chochinov and Diana Martin, soon began working with then-Etobicoke-Lakeshore

Councillor Peter Milczyn and city Parks staff to come up with a plan that would make the best use of those funds to improve Park Lawn Park.

After three years of hard work and consultation, a design for a tree-lined pedestrian pathway with lighting and seating areas was agreed upon to replace an old, cracked asphalt walkway that links the Stonegate community to Park Lawn JMS through the park.

While work on that original plan began this winter when the city installed the five light standards to line the soon-to-be-constructed pathway, as of early June no other work had been completed, so Chochinov said she called the city for a construction update – and it was only then that she learned of the “disheartening” news about the proposed addition of the fence and a gravel ‘warning track’ on the outermost edges of the baseball diamond’s outfield.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore Trustee Pamela Gough was also caught off guard.

With so many concerns about the proposed fence mounting, Parks, Forestry and Recreation staff went back to the drawing board.

At a meeting at Park Lawn JMS last Friday, the results of that work were revealed in the form of a plan Chochinov and Gough both agreed were satisfactory.

According to Daniel McLaughlin, manager of Construction Management and Capital Projects for the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department, that revised plan involves: the scrapping of plans for the fence and warning track; the relocation of two of the alreadyinstalled light standards to the south site of the new pathway, further away from the baseball field; and the relocation of four or five of the proposed trees from the north side of the pathway near the baseball diamond, to a centrally located seating area near the school.

Outdoor production of Romeo and Juliet set in today’s world Humber River Shakespeare show begins locally July 27 MARIA TZAVARAS etg@insidetoronto.com It could be daunting to play the most known romantic lead in a play, in one of history’s most notorious love stories.

Kelly Penner, who’s playing Romeo in Humber River Shakespeare Company’s (HRSC) touring production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet this summer, said it is a role he’s always wanted to play, and one he is excited to be playing in his own way.

“You feel like you may be living to some expectation because everyone knows this play so it’s hard, but you have to just drop that and figure out how it works for you as the actor. But I love it,” he said.

HRSC’s production will be touring across the Greater Toronto Area, including Etobicoke at the end of July and in August, at various

indoor at outdoor venues.

Penner said he loves the outdoor aspect of the show because whatever happens becomes a part of the play.

For example, a bird may land onstage and the sun will be going down just as he begins talking about the stars.

“There’s so much more magic, I’m excited to play it outside,” he said.

While the story is originally set in Verona, Italy, in the late 1500s, director Kevin Hammond said they’ve decided to set the tragic love story in modern day while keeping the traditional dialogue.

He said he chose this because the timeless story contains themes relatable to today’s youth.

“It deals with issues of urban violence, young love and a society that is racing out of control; it deals with heart-

break, rage grief, violence, so in very many ways I find it to be a very contemporary play,” Hammond said.

While they have adapted the costumes and props to reflect their contemporary setting, the story is the same,

Hammond said.

“For example, the knife is the dagger; anything that is part of the environment can be used, so people are hit with lead pipes, bricks and chains and natural fighting,” Hammond said.

Penner said Shakespeare is timeless; it’s a matter of finding and presenting the story in a way it relates to people today.

“The emotions and the feelings in the play are forever,” he said. “What’s in the play and the themes are so relevant today.”

Romeo and Juliet are two young lovers who meet and fall in love, but are forbidden to be with one another because of their controlling, feuding families. When being apart becomes too much to bear, a plan is devised that goes terribly wrong ending in a horrible tragedy for both.

What Romeo and Juliet go through can be compared to today’s world where kids lives are overscheduled and the hectic-paced world, at times,

becomes too difficult to keep up with, Hammond said.

“How many times do you hear that technology is changing the world, it’s going too fast, kids are forced to grow up too fast, and the pressure that young people are under is huge? So what I wanted to do is show what happens when we put pressure on young people to act in haste without forethought,” Hammond said.

Hammond said the show is relatable to all ages. If you’re a teenager, you may see where Juliet is coming from and as an older person, you may remember that circumstance from your youth.

The HRSC Romeo and Juliet tour started July 8 and runs until Aug. 3. They will be in Etobicoke staring July 27 at three venues including shows at Montgomery’s Inn, The Old Mill and Etienne Brule Park. Most performances are pay-what-you-can with a $20 suggested donation.

Subway service comes to a halt this weekend in the west-end A west-end subway closure is planned for this weekend.

From Saturday, July 19 to Sunday, July 20 there is no service between Kipling and Islington stations, located on the Bloor-Danforth line, also known as Line 2 because of rail work.

During the closure, westbound trains will return east at Islington, and riders seeking to get to Kipling can use a shuttle bus service provided by the TTC. There is also planned service to Jane Station for accessible riders who need to use an elevator.

Nine hundred workers at the plant – which manufactures the Toronto Rocket subway cars and the new streetcar fleet – walked off the job Monday after failing to come agree on a new contract. It’s the first job action at the plant since 2011.

facility quashed at council Embrace it and move on says Councillor Grimes DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayor Rob Ford tried and failed to convince Toronto City Council to move the BMX track from Centennial Park to another location at July’s council meeting.

Ford made the point July 10 as council was debating an item on capital projects for the Pan Am/Parapan Games in 2015. One of those projects is a BMX track in Centennial Park in Etobicoke, which will cost $4.4 million altogether.

That is considerably more than the original anticipated cost of $1.547 million. The

city’s contribution will increase from $678,000 to $1.94 million.

Ford claimed that he had received numerous complaints about the project from the surrounding community – both on the phone and in person at his children’s soccer games.

“It’s making it very hard for some of the people around Centennial Park,” said Ford, describing the track as “a dirt track we might be able to use four or five months out of the year, weather permitting.”

Ford added: “At the end of the day no one in their right mind would spend $4.4 mil-

lion on a dirt track.”

Councillors didn’t agree.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes said the permanent park is appropriate at Centennial Park.

“The money’s being spent – so get over it. Let’s embrace it.

It’s time to move on,” Grimes said.

Local Etobicoke Centre Councillor Peter Leon said that despite the mayor’s claims, he has heard almost no objections from residents “This item is required, we have no choice,” Leon said.

“Cancelling it would be an embarrassment.”

Millard, Smich headed straight to trial in Bosma murder case Defence lawyer says move puts client at a disadvantage Dellen Millard and Mark Smich will head straight to trial for the murder of Ancaster man Tim Bosma in one of the most highly publicized homicide cases of the last decade.

The attorney general’s office granted the Crown’s office’s rare request last month for a direct indictment, which allows the case of the former Etobicoke man and his friend to skip a preliminary trial.

“A direct indictment in this case is most unfortunate,” said Millard’s Toronto lawyer, Ravin Pillay.

“The preliminary inquiry, which an accused is entitled to in almost all serious cases, is an opportunity for a judge to screen charges to determine whether they should go to trial. A preliminary inquiry is also critical for

the defence to discover the Crown’s case.”

Pillay called the move “extraordinary” and said it “significantly impedes” Millard’s ability to mount “a full and complete defence to a serious criminal charge.”

“The accused is not provided with the submissions made by the Crown to the attorney general for the direct indictment. The accused is also not provided with the reasons cited by the attorney general for issuing the direct indictment. There is also no means by which the accused is able to appeal the decision.”

A trial could be held as early as next year.

Millard, 28, a former Etobicoke resident, was arrested in May of last year after Bosma’s badly burned remains were found on Millard’s Ayr, Ont. farm.

Both are charged with first-degree murder.

Bosma was reported missing after two men reportedly arrived at his Ancaster home

wanting to test drive the Dodge Ram pickup he had posted for sale online. Bosma never returned home. His truck was later recovered by police inside a trailer parked on the front driveway of Millard’s mother’s home in Kleinberg, Ont. etobicoke connections In April of this year, Millard was charged with the murder of his father, Wayne Millard, who was previously believed to have taken his own life in his Etobicoke home in November 2012.

And more than two years after Etobicoke woman Laura Babcock disappeared in July 2012, Millard, who had a brief relationship with Babcock, was also charged with her murder.

Police have not said if they have recovered Babcock’s remains. Her parents hold out hope she may still be alive.

The OPP is overseeing all three cases, which Crown attorneys are treating separately.

Etobicoke Kangaroo player to play for Canada in Aussie-rules football tourney NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Three years ago a friend asked Leslieville resident Sylvie De Brabandere to play for the Etobicoke Kangaroos, a club fielding teams in a provincial Australian rules football league.

And now she’s seeking support to go to Australia in August to play for the Canadian national team (called the Northern Lights) in an international tournament.

She’s already three-quarters of the way to achieving her modest crowdfunding request of $4,500 (at http://www. gofundme.com/send-sylvie-to-ic14) thanks in no small part to the generosity of her own home club.

“The club has been awesome, helping to host barbecues, we had a fundraiser the other week,” she said, in a recent interview.

And that’s already good enough for her to be able to commit to the 2014 International Cup which runs in Melbourne, Australia, Aug. 9 to 23. It’s held every three years.

A native of St. Mary’s, just outside of London, Ont., she has lived in Toronto

for the past six years – the last three in Leslieville.

Participating in Australian rules football, let alone at such an elite nationalteam level, is not something she could ever have foreseen. After all, she’s not from Down Under and had never before dabbled in Aussie rules football.

In high school, she played volleyball, soccer and basketball but primarily focused on training and showing her horse in jumping and eventing.

After high school, volleyball became front and centre which she played at the varsity level (with both Fanshawe College and at the University of Guelph) and at provincial and national levels.

After closing the books on her post secondary career she dabbled in half marathons, trail races, muay thai and crossfit “in the pursuit of a sport that could give me the feeling of camaraderie that I was missing after varsity.”

Her quest was finally completed through her co-worker, originally from Australia, who played for Etobicoke and who invited her out to a practice.

“So that was my first time playing ‘footy’ and only because he dragged me out there,” she said. “I was terrified.

I had never played a contact sport in my life.”

She not only proved to be a quick convert to the rugged sport, but also a quick study, quickly making the national team. The Australian version of rugby is well represented in Ontario with 10 clubs – seven of them, including the Kangaroos, based out of Toronto and the other three from Hamilton, Ottawa and Guelph. Currently, six of the Toronto clubs are playing their home games out of Humber College South, including the Kangaroos, with one team playing out of the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.

The league offers two levels of competition for men and one women’s league.

The Northern Lights are being joined in Australia by a Canadian development team called the Midnight Suns and they’ll face teams from the U.S., defending champion Ireland, Fiji and Tonga.

Fellow Toronto clubs have also supplied three other members to the Northern Lights, who earned the silver medal at the 2011 tournament – Heather Walshe and Sarah Ennor from High Park Demons and Jen Nicholls from Toronto Central Blues.

Mimico Mountaineers junior lacrosse team will definitely be needing their ‘A’ game NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com The Mimico Mountaineers Jr. B lacrosse club has played its last game.

When it closed out the season in June, with a rare playoff miss, it was also – unknown to many – closing the books on the franchise which operated from 1993 to 2014.

Fortunately for Etobicoke lacrosse fans, this is a good news story: they’re moving up to Jr. A from Jr. B. It amounts to a shake-up of junior lacrosse in the west end between two adjacent and

arch rival organizations – the Mimico Mountaineers and the Mississauga Tomahawks.

They’re now combining their forces.

For the past few seasons, Mississauga has operated clubs at the ‘A’ and ‘B’ level while Mimico has competed at ‘B’ and ‘C’.

The new partnership has Mimico taking over the ‘A’ team, Mississauga operating the lone ‘B’ team. Mimico will still field its ‘C’ development team.

The move was made possible, explained Mountaineers head coach and general manager Sean O’Callaghan

because of the strength of the sport at the youth level in Mimico.

“When we started the junior B team in ’93 here in Mimico, it was the right thing to do at the right time.

The minor club (the Mimico Mountaineers Minor Lacrosse Club) was playing at the ‘B’ and ‘C’ level,” he said.

Now, he said, “the Mimico minor system has been developing and playing at the ‘A’ level for the last five or six years consistently from tyke right through to midget. And those players coming out of our minor system want to play at the highest level they

League approval came only days before the final regular season game although it’s something the club had long been pursuing.

Highest level “We’ve known for about three or four years that this time was going to come where we needed to try to get into the Jr. A league, and it’s not an easy league to get into.

“It’s the highest level o f l a c ro s s e yo u c a n play anywhere in North America for 17 to 21 year olds in box (lacrosse),” O’Callaghan said.

It immediately sets up a natural rivalry with east-end Toronto Beaches, which has a similar setup with a very strong youth organization feeding into a Jr. A team (although the latter has struggled the past few seasons).

“I think it will be great for both teams when we play there at Ted Reeve (Arena) or they play here at Mimico (Arena). It’s going to be the battle of Toronto and I think it will help both programs.”

In last month’s season and franchise finale, the Mountaineers, fittingly, honoured their all-time top offensive player, Andy Dudun who holds the franchise records in points (503), goals (178) and assists (325) which he compiled in just 77 games over three seasons (1995, ’96, ’97), amassing three league scoring titles and two MVPs. Prior to his junior career, he began playing minor lacrosse with the Etobicoke Eclipse from tyke to first-year bantam, coming over to Mimico for second-year bantam when the Eclipse folded.

After his junior career, he went on to success in the senior ranks winning the President’s Cup twice with the Kitchener Waterloo Kodiaks and playing with the Buffalo Bandits in the National Lacrosse League.

His two younger brothers also played for Mimico although they didn’t quite make it as far as the NLL, settling instead for the NHL – Brendan Smith with the Detroit Red Wings and Reilly Smith with the Boston Bruins.

Another NHL alumnus of the team is Dave Bolland, who just signed with the Florida Panthers.
