The children of Martingrove Gardens Park are so excited for construction of their new $500,000 splash pad to begin, that one eager tot even brought along his own sand shovel to the project’s special groundbreaking ceremony to help hurry things along. Little Charlie Burnett, 1,
happily took the lead at the recent event, getting right to work digging into the grass with his orange plastic shovel, as Daniel McLaughlin of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, Etobicoke Centre Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby, and members of her staff – including Charlie’s dad Jim Burnett – followed suit behind him with their own ceremonial shovels. “This is going to be the very
first splash pad in Ward 4,” Lindsay Luby said of the project, construction of which is slated to begin Aug. 8. “It’s going to be enjoyed by so many residents, because the neighbourhood is changing over and it’s full of young people now.” When complete by the end of October – three months behind schedule – the 60-by45-foot rubberized splash pad will feature a set of rain-
bow arcs, dumping buckets, a sidewinder, a mister and a gusher – all activated by pushbuttons controlled by the kids themselves. Located just northeast of the Martingrove Gardens Park’s tennis courts, the project will also include a “landing pad” featuring benches, picnic tables and bike racks, and several landscaping features includ>>>PROJECT, page 7
