Princess Gardens’ residents have armed themselves against this spring’s assault of gypsy moth caterpillars. Now they’re inviting neighbours with trees not considered “under risk” to join in the battle. “ Yo u l i v e i n t h i s neighbourhood, that’s what this neighbourhood is – the trees,” said Karen Ashcroft, a 15-year Princess Gardens’ resident, of the area’s oaks, some towering three- or four-storeys high. “I think most people in the neighbourhood realize that. They move here because of the trees. Our area was hit th e worst by the gypsy moth. I think that’s why so many people have been involved with the (TreeAzin) injection program.” Ashcroft heads the newly created residents’ group, the Pr incess >>>I don’t, page 10

his Friday, June 6, marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when thousands of Canadian soldiers and Allied forces led a successful invasion of France off the beaches of Normandy during the Second World War. It’s an event that’s earned a honourable place in our history books and put us forever in the debt of the brave soldiers who risked their lives for such a critical mission, that would ultimately turn the tide and end the war. Canada’s role was a major one but it did not go without sacrifice, as Canadians our view suffered more than 1,000 casualties, including 359 killed. As we honour and rememFamilies of ber those who served – sadly, a soliders need lifetime ago for most of those – let’s extend our comour support soldiers memoration on this special day to also consider other impacts of military service. For instance, take time to think of the families who did, and continue to, watch their loved ones head off to war. At city hall tomorrow, a special event is taking place to mark the anniversary of D-Day and one of the speakers is Joanne O’Halloran, whose father Edward served during the Second World War and was at the Normandy invasion. She’ll be sharing her experience as a soldier’s child. It’s a perspective we don’t hear often, but one that needs to be heard, as well as that of partners, mothers and fathers. Soldiers and veterans need our support, but their families do too. Something else that should be incorporated into the tradition of military commemoration, is increasing support for the mental health needs of soldiers when they return home. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be a relatively new term, but it’s not a new illness and its designation comes too late for generations of soldiers and families who suffered without help. We have a responsibility to look after the people who fight for us, so let’s support them wholly during their time of duty and after as well.

Ford’s rehab working wonders for voters

I

t was not so very long ago that Mayor Rob Ford longed to be anywhere but in the bosom of his constituents – at least when it came to the observation of Canada Day July 1. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, our mayor would make a bee-line for his family’s cottage rather than wave a flag in Toronto and coincidentally march in the Pride parade. Not so in 2014. In an interview from the facility where he is undergoing therapy for alcohol addiction, Mayor Ford declared this week he’ll be back in Toronto for July 1. At that point, he’ll attend Canada Day celebrations and take his re-election campaign out of the holding pattern it’s been in since April 30. He told The Toronto Sun he’s a changed man, and is ready to make some amends for all the wrong he’s done us.

david nickle the city And of course he wants to run for another term as mayor of the biggest city in Canada. When that happens, I suppose we’ll all have to contend with him. In the meantime, Toronto has another month, nearly, to appreciate our own bout of rehab. Think about it: for just over a month, we’ve been able to spend most of our time doing what people ought to during an election: considering what sort of city we’d like to be in, and worrying over the management of the one we’ve got. In the mayoral race, John Tory has finally come forward with his transit plan, and while it’s got its problems, at least it’s not a man screaming “subways” over and over again. Even when the talk’s

gotten rough, it’s been measured and thoughtful and respectful. That’s been the case in matters of governance, too. Aside from a bad evening when Doug Ford and a group of his constituents urged a house looking after autistic youth to pack up and leave, talk’s been civil. We’re having a provincial election without, so far, a single parade led by Rob and Doug Ford. It is almost peaceful in Toronto. And it may well stay that way. When Rob Ford returns to his titular post as mayor, there will be just two more council meetings before the municipal election campaign starts in earnest. The serious campaigns – which is to say, the ones that didn’t take a break to dry out in cottage country – will be organized, and funded, and by summer’s end consolidating their presence and support, their

platforms mostly unveiled. The electorate, having been schooled in such for the past few months, will be ready for a serious civic talk. Which is to say, going into the election, we should be in good shape: rehab, if not for our mayor then at least for our damaged city politick, having worked its wonders. the etobicoke guardian tackles a local issue

our exclusive look

It’ll be a while yet before peaches are in season (left), but when they are you can certainly expect to see them by the basketful at our local markets. Centre, Alex Chesney sorts through stacks of young asparagus at the Etobicoke Civic Centre Farmers’ Market, while, at right, Rick Coe and Gregorio Garcia show off some fresh products from Andrews Scenic Acres Farm Market at the Sherway Gardens Farmers’ Market. Below, left Blythe Weber discusses her homemade preserves with chef Derrick Markland at the Montgomery’s Inn market.

Farm fresh and market-ready

Farmers’ market season is here, with Ontario-grown produce for sale in west-end markets TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The popularity of farmers’ markets across Ontario continues to rise, and Etobicoke is no exception. Ontario is leading the way in the renaissance of farmers’ markets in Canada after a serious decline when malls built in the 1970s came to rule the consumer landscape, Farmers’ Markets Ontario (FMO) reported. Farmers’ markets in Ontario have grown from a low of 60 in the 1980s

to three times that number today, stated FMO, which was established in 1991. Why the resurgence in popularity? “New markets are being established and old markets are being revitalized as shoppers across the province discover a more personal shopping experience,” FMO said. FMO conducted a series of four studies on Ontario’s farmers’ markets that concluded that while getting healthier, fresh, locally

produced fruits, vegetables and baked goods is an important reason for shopping at a farmers’ market, many consumers reported a more personal reason. The No. 1 reason shoppers surveyed patronize their local farmers’ markets is “their strong belief in the integrity of shopping in their community and their desire to meet and get to know the producers of the food they eat,” the FMO reported. In June, shoppers can find seasonal fruits and vegetables, includ-

I don’t think we could stand another summer of gypsy moths, says Princess Gardens resident >>>from page 1 Gardens’ Gypsy Moth Control Committee, advised by city forestry staff at the suggestion of Ward 3 Councillor Peter Leon. Weeks ago, the committee sent 92 homeowners of trees identified by the city as “under risk” a letter to gauge interest in hiring a tree care company to inject TreeAzin insecticide at a discounted group rate. To date, 81 homeowners – including those with trees not considered “under risk” – have signed up. Two weeks ago, TruGreen injected their trees. The committee hired TruGreen after seeking requests for quotes from eight companies, Ashcroft said. Last spring, the virulent pest returned with a vengeance at outbreak levels to the Princess Gardens’ neighbourhood bounded by Kipling Avenue, Princess Margaret Boulevard, Lloyd Manor Road and Farningham Crescent. The outbreak occurred despite the city’s aerial spraying in 2008 of BTK, a pestcontrol product that kills the caterpillars, that city officials expected to control the gypsy moth for seven to 10 years. “It was a shock. No one expected them to be back. Until all this (caterpillar) poop started to fall like rain, people didn’t know (the gypsy moth had returned),” Ashcroft recalled of last spring’s outbreak. So far this spring, Ashcroft

said her trees show less evidence of gypsy moth caterpillars: “I don’t notice a lot of eating going on. The caterpillars are still very small. I don’t see them looking as they have in recent years.” Each gypsy moth egg mass can contain as many as 500 eggs. When the eggs hatch, caterpillars that grow two inches long emerge, defoliating the trees and obliterating the ground beneath them with caterpillar feces. The Princess Gardens residents’ committee is trying to get ahead of the gypsy moth this spring. Resident Steven Lynch helped edit the letter, which Ken McMullin delivered to area homeowners. Greg Martin assisted with spreadsheets and setting up the committee’s email address. Karen Faiczak collected the contact information from interested residents. Ashcroft said she is hopeful more of the Princess Gardens’ neighbourhood joins the gypsy moth battle. “I don’t think we could stand another summer of gypsy moths. I know the trees couldn’t...” Ashcroft said. “We’re hoping the gypsy moth decline continues and next year, it shouldn’t be a problem. People can’t afford to do this every year.” Jim Kourniotis, TruGreen’s business development manager, said TreeAzin must be injected annually for leaf-feeding insects such as gypsy moth if the area’s

infestation levels, presence of egg masses on the tree and the tree’s health condition, warrant it. TreeAzin is effective, Kourniotis reported, noting any pest control product must be proven effective before it is registered for use by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency. But time is of the essence. And time will soon run out this spring for TreeAzin injections to be effective. While Princess Gardens’ residents engage the war against the gypsy moth with TreeAzin injections, Ric and TruGreen’s Kourniotis recommend homeowners employ a full arsenal against the pest by also removing gypsy moth egg masses and banding their trees. Because it is difficult to differentiate between old and new egg masses, Ric encourages residents to also consider removing them from their trees. Resident Tracey Taylor is firmly convinced of the benefit of banding and egg mass removal in beating the gypsy moth. The evidence – the absence of egg masses in her oaks. “I cleared my trees of egg sacks. They are mint. It’s great. I haven’t seen one caterpillar. I feel a huge sense of relief,” Taylor said. Residents interested in getting in on the committee’s TruGreen tree injection group rate may email the committee at pggmcc@googlegroups.com

A last-minute deal between Metrolinx and the union representing GO bus operators averted a strike which would have affected some 65,000 commuters. No details were announced regarding the new collective bargaining agreement which will apply to approximately 1,850 workers from Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1587. The frustrated fish undertook its own campaign ahead of the debate, scheduled for Tuesday night, calling on all of the major parties to deliver better transit funding. “Since the Ontario election was called, Sammy has been taking to streets, transit systems and roads of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) to symbolize the frustration and congestion residents face each day,” said the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, which organized the campaign, in a statement.

Vote for Franklin Horner CC’s kitchen scrub down Scrubbing Bubbles contest voting open until June 10 TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com He l p Fr a n k l i n Ho r n e r Community Centre win a squeaky clean kitchen. The non-profit registered charity with 1,300 members and 52 user groups recently learned it is a Top 10 finalist in the Scrubbing Bubbles Let’s Bubble campaign. The nationwide call asks Canadians to nominate places in their community most deserving of a cleanup by a Scrubbing Bubbles clean-up team. Franklin Horner executive director Laura Latham applied to win a good spring cleaning of the centre’s kitchen, which runs “full-tilt” serving homemade breakfast of bacon, eggs and fresh pastries, lunch and afternoon snacks five days

a week. Some days there is a lunch-and-learn for 200 seniors that serves back bacon on a bun, potato salad and dessert. There’s also a monthly $5 all-you-can-eat pasta night. “We were in the process of organizing volunteers to do this when the contest came along. It’s kismet,” Latham said. “We’d like them to do a real good scrub down, a spring cleaning like you’d do at home. It’s something the staff just don’t have time to do. I hope we’re a winner.” The task would include washing the centre’s 250 plates and cups, scrubbing tables used for card playing and eating, as well as cleaning shelves that store books read by seniors. Three grand prize win-

ners will be chosen from the finalists to win a Scrubbing Bubbles clean-up, a donation and Scrubbing Bubbles product. The centre has already received a Scrubbing Bubbles basket of products for being a finalist. Many of the centre’s members and visitors are seniors, so meals are offered at an affordable price, while still making a profit for the centre, Latham said. “We make everything from scratch,” she said. “A sandwich only costs $2. We want seniors to come every day if they want.” The centre’s sponsors donate food to help with costs.

EAs to be replaced because of position’s ‘reclassification’ across the board >>>from page 1 this plan.” Seeking answers and a solution, a dedicated group of Park Lawn ISP parents have spent the better part of the last two months sending emails, making phone calls, and addressing Toronto District School Board (TDSB) trustees and staff at every opportunity possible. Even the kids themselves got involved, writing their own letter to the board and presenting it, in video form, at last Wednesday’s meeting of the Program and School Services Committee. “When we first came to this school, we didn’t know anyone. (Our EAs) welcomed us with open arms and helped us get to know other students.

They helped us to feel like we belonged at Park Lawn. Coming here was hard, as when we first came people would look at us differently...The EAs helped us to think that we weren’t just a pair of wheels, we were people – special people,” the letter read, in part. And with that, a breakthrough. According to TDSB spokeperson Ryan Bird, the decision was made late last week to keep two of the EAs on for an additional year in order to “make that transition as smooth as possible” for the kids in the ISP classroom. “This is a perfect example of working with parents to come to some sort of agreement. The board heard the parents’ and students’ concerns about the

Community Notices

transition and the bonds that these EAs make, and that’s why they decided to have two of the existing EAs stay on, to have that transition go as smooth as possible,” he said. The EA position in the ISP classrooms of integrated schools like Park Lawn JMS – where children with special needs are integrated into the classrooms of regular day schools – he added, have been in the process of being reclassified across the TDSB for the last two-and-a-half years. At Park Lawn, the EAs currently serving little Alesandro and his classmates are ‘K’ level EAs, while the ones coming into replace them are ‘J’ levels. Bird said K and J level EAs are equally qualified, the only difference in their designation

Staff photo/IAN KELSO

Alesandro Ciampa, 5, and his mother Shana.

being the frequency with which they are expected to do cer-

tain activities such as inserting catheters and feeding tubes, and assisting with bathroom breaks, etc. “K level EAs would do that on a frequent basis, whereas a J level EA would do that as needed, but again, they’re both equally qualified,” he said, adding that, while there is a slight difference in the pay grades between the two, “any money saved will be reinvested directly back into special education, not to our bottom line.” News that at least two of their EAs would be staying on, if only temporarily, came as a relief to Randhawa and her fellow parents. But still, a sense of loss remains, alongside the lingering feeling that more should have been done

to involve the parents earlier on. Fellow Park Lawn ISP mom Debra Haak has also been highly involved in the talks with the TDSB on behalf of her 10-year-old son William Christie, who has epilepsy. It was William, in fact, who got up in front of trustees to introduce his fellow classmates’ video letter at last Wednesday’s PSSC meeting – an especially proud moment for Haak. “It makes me cry even talking about it, it was so beautiful,” Haak said of the video, which included photos of children in the class with their EAs over the years, and the voices of the children reading their letter.

The Vincent Massey School community learned recently of a tentative deal that, if all goes well, could save the historic Daisy Avenue school building and the popular child care centre that occupies it. At a community meeting held at Humber College last Thursday, EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes introduced concerned parents and local residents to Minto Group’s Tom Giancos. As vice-president of land development for Minto – the developer responsible for the successful Minto Southshore and Minto Longbranch townhouse developments in south Etobicoke – Giancos said his company is interested in a portion of the 2.7-acre Vincent Massey site for a similar townhouse development. “We essentially have a very preliminary, conditional agreement with VMCC (Vincent Massey Child Care) to essentially develop a portion of the site, while retaining the existing school building and while retaining the day care,” he explained. Under the conditions of the tentative agreement, Giancos added, Minto would partner with the owner of Vincent Massey to develop approximately two acres of the land at 68 Daisy Ave., while the day care would retain the remaining half-acre that contains the existing school building and day care – minus the gymnasium, a portion of which would be demolished. Word that the day-care centre might be saved came as welcome news to the dozens of parents who came out – many with kids in tow. “I just want to thank Minto for consulting with the day care to try to save Vincent Massey, because it’s great that

Back in November more than 100 parents and children rallied to save Vincent Massey School day care, including Oliver May and his dad Robert. As of last week, there was a collective sigh of relief as developer Minto Group expressed interest in buying a portion of the land from the school board for a townhouse development but keep the day care on site.

a developer is actually considering the community,” said Tina, whose daughter attends the day care. “As we know, living in this neighbourhood with lots of families moving in, day care is a huge priority in this community, so thank you.” Built in 1929 and closed in 1983 due to declining enrollment, the Vincent Massey school building has been home to Vincent Massey Child Care – the lakeshore area’s largest day-care centre operating year-round programming for 193 children aged newborn to 12 years – since 1985. In June of last year, however, the school was identified as surplus to the needs of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and put up for sale through the Toronto Lands Corporation. Although Grimes said the city initially expressed an interest in buying the site in order to save the day-care spaces, once city budget discussions began it became

clear there was no funding to do so. The city, he added, has already twice before purchased TDSB surplus sites in south Etobicoke – first at Franklin Horner and then at Thomas Berry. “My key focus here is still to save those day care spaces, though,” he said. That sentiment was echoed by Etobicoke-Lakeshore Trustee Pamela Gough, who was also in attendance at the meeting. While Gough said she was limited in what she could say about the offer – which is still in negotiations – she’s hopeful that it will pose a solution to retaining the day care spaces within the community. “It’s been my goal and objective all along to make sure the day-care lands in a good spot, and if that good spot is in the building that it’s in now, I’m fine with that,” she said. “The feedback I’m getting is that people think it’s a good idea and the parents are all very relieved. I’m very positive.”

Police say to turn in cash that fell from the sky CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Kipling Avenue was the site of an unusual downpour late Sunday afternoon as instances of raining money were reported from North Queen Street all the way up to the Six Points area. “One woman told us she was driving up Kipling when she saw the cash just kind of floating in the air,” Sgt. Tim Burrows of 22 Division said in an interview with The Guardian Monday morning. “Her immediate thought was that it was Canadian Tire money, but then she looked around and saw people picking it up. So she pulled over and started collecting some herself.” That woman, Burrows said, has been the only Good Samaritan yet to turn over the money over to 22 Division police. “We were astounded that she brought it in,” said Burrows, who crowned the unnamed woman “the most awesome person today” in a

Cash was found in the Kipling and North Queen Street area Sunday. Police said of all the people who grabbed it, only one person turned it in to 22 Division.

facebook posting Sunday night. In that same post, Burrows shared a photo of some of the recovered funds – $625 in 100s, 50s, 20s and

fives – which he said accounts for just a portion of the “significant” amount of cash the woman turned in.

Where the money came from, however, remains a mystery. “That’s the big crazy thing about it – we don’t know how much cash it actually was, we don’t know where it came from and nobody has reported to us, at least at this point in time, being the losers of what we can only assume is a very considerable amount of cash,” he said. No ATM, bank or cash courier robberies in the area have been reported, and Burrows said he’s doubtful the raining cash can be tied to the Hidden Cash phenomenon that’s spread from California into Canadian cities. On Twitter, anonymous users using variations of the @HiddenCash handle have begun tweeting out hints as to the location of sums of money hidden in various locations – but in those cases, the cash is hidden in envelopes in strategic locations, not found free-falling through the sky unannounced. “That would be a really good twist, but we know this wasn’t just pennies from heaven,” Burrows said.

“As much as we’d like to think there’s that kind of generosity in the world, there just isn’t and somebody out there is out a significant amount of money.” To people who recovered some of the money, Burrows asks they turn the money to 22 Division. “I would hate to think that somebody is out their life savings or investments or mortgage payment, and that those people didn’t do the right thing and bring it forward to us,” he said, noting all those who choose to do so will have their names and the amount of cash they turned in recorded. In 90 days, if the money remains unclaimed, the cash will be returned to its finder. “If the chance comes and the money goes back to finders keepers, losers weepers, well, wouldn’t you like to be the one getting that back, while knowing you did the right thing?” Burrows asked.

Witnesses needed in spate Police look for Robert Noftall of Rexdale shootings Friday Police are asking witnesses to a series of shootings that broke out Friday night in north Etobicoke to come forward with information. Officers were originally called to area of Mount Olive Drive and Kipling Avenue at around 6:39 p.m., when it was reported that three people suffered non-lifethreatening gunshot wounds when unknown suspects entered the area and began to exchange gunfire. A short time later, shots broke out again at Etobicoke General Hospital, where one of the original three victims was taken in a vehicle by friends. It has been reported that, as a man was carrying the wounded victim across the hospital parking lot, a suspect opened fire on him, too, leaving him with non-lifethreatening injuries. Later still, even more gunfire rang out in the area

of Martin Grove and Albion roads, where bullets fired from a passing vehicle struck a local residence, although no injuries were reported. Initial media reports indicated the shootings might have been triggered by a feud between rival gangs, although police have remained tightlipped about a motive. Three of the four victims shot in Friday’s spate of shootings were released from hospital that same night, while the fourth remained in hospital, where he is expected to recover from more serious injuries. No arrests have yet been made. – with files from TorStar News charged with careless driving wman

A 39-year-old garbage truck driver has been charged with careless driving stemming from a January incident in which he allegedly struck

a female pedestrian in Etobicoke. On Jan. 14, police responded to Royal York Road and Bell Royal Court at 3:18 p.m. after receiving a report a 21-year-old woman had been struck. It was reported the woman was standing on the northeast corner of the intersection, when she was hit by the garbage truck as it made a right turn onto Bell Royal Court from the northbound lanes of Royal York Road. As the driver continued to service his route, he noticed the woman lying on the roadway. The woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment. On Saturday, May 31, the unnamed driver of the garbage truck was charged with careless driving. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 3. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 416-222TIPS (8477).

Jay’s star pitcher works to keep kids safe from sexual abuse Commit to Kids program provides sports organizations with tools and resources Toronto Blue Jays ace R.A. Dickey has teamed up with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection to help prevent young athletes from having to endure the agony of child sexual abuse he himself suffered as a young boy. “I carried the pain of sexual abuse for more than two decades. As a kid I didn’t know how to deal with it, so I tried to forget. But you can’t forget,” said Dickey in a statement, who disclosed in 2007 that he was sexually abused both at age eight by a female babysitter and again later by a male teenager. “When kids register for sports, they are entrusted to our care and we have every responsibility to take all the steps possible to create positive experiences to enhance their development.” To achieve those ends, Dickey and the Jays Care Foundation have partnered with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection towards the development of the Commit to Kids – Sport Edition. The program, said the centre’s Director of Education Noni Classen, is one that strives to help create safer environments for children in sports organizations by providing those organizations with strategies, policies, and a step-by-step plan for reducing the risk of child

cynthia reason the police piece sexual abuse. “We created this program because we know organizations that work with kids have a vulnerability to attract certain individuals to work or volunteer there who may be seeking access to children for the purposes of gaining sexual access,” she said. “But we also have individuals who come to work for child-serving organizations who can use poor judgement at times and who may not intend to gain sexual access, but through the relationships that ensue, they may end up engaging in harmful relationships with kids.” The Commit to Kids Sport Edition program is all about preventing those types of harmful relationships from ever forming. Through both its cybertip. ca program and relationships with law enforcement agencies, Classen said the Canadian Centre for Child Protection is all too aware that many people arrested for possession and manufacturing of child pornography have often worked or volunteered with child-serving organizations. “After such an arrest, the organizations will often say ‘what more could we have done? We did criminal ref-

R.A. Dickey, pitcher with the Toronto Blue Jays, has teamed up with the Jays Care Foundation and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection to protect young athletes from falling prey to sexual predators in sports.

erence checks.’ But what we know now is that the majority of these individuals won’t have criminal records, because they won’t have been caught,” she said. “Criminal reference checks are not a fool-proof method, anymore. Yes, they’re part of the process, but not the entire process.” To help fill in those gaps, the Commit to Kids kit – which has so far been sent out to more than 1,700 sport organizations across the country – includes a Guide for Sport Organizations and training video, as well as materials for parents and sports leaders, providing

organizations with a plan using a risk-management approach that is much broader than criminal record and child abuse registry checks for preventing child sexual abuse. For retired Toronto police officer Pat Burke, who coaches both hockey and cricket locally, the Commit to Kids program represents an important shift in thinking about the responsibility sports organizations have in ensuring the safety of young athletes – and all that that entails. “We put in a lot of time and energy, especially when you’re talking about hockey,

into concussion prevention – and that’s important. We’ve educated ourselves and, through time, we now know there’s certain issues stemming from body contact and we’ve done a great deal to navigate that and to protect kids in that capacity,” he said. “...and this is no different. It really isn’t. Every child sports organization should have policies in place that address situations that will help prevent the kids from being exposed to poor behaviour and poor judgement by some adults.” As a parent of young athletes himself, Burke said the Commit to Kids - Sport Edition program is one that should provide peace of mind for his fellow hockey moms and dads. And the fact that it’s being championed by Dickey and the Blue Jays is only going to help create more awareness around the program and its importance, he said, noting that he hopes other local sports teams like the Maple Leafs, Argos and Raptors follow suit and throw their support behind Commit to Kids. For their part, the Blue Jays – through their charitable arm – are “committed to providing children with access to sport and safe environments to play,” said

Danielle Bedasse, executive director of Jays Care Foundation. “We look forward to working with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection to help protect kids and allow them to realize all the benefits being involved in sports provides,” she said. Kenya’s Top Safari Spots Maasai Mara National Reserve

Amboseli National Park

The birthplace of the quintessential safari experience, the Mara is famous for its population of big cats and the great wildebeest migration that takes place between July and October.

Amboseli National Park is the best place to catch a glimpse of free-ranging elephants and offers tantalizing views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Be sure to spend some time trekking up Observation Hill, whose peak gives up an incredible overall panoramic view of the park.

Lake Nakuru National Park Nestled into the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park is a bird lover’s mecca where flocks of blushing pink flamingoes are the resident celebrities, and the park also serves as one of the first national rhinoceros sanctuaries.

A LONGTIME LIBERAL STRONGHOLD, Etobicoke Centre is home to one of the highest percentages of senior residents per capita in the country. This year’s race in Etobicoke Centre is set to be a wide open one, with longtime Liberal incumbent Donna Cansfield retiring from politics. Cansfield has won the seat for the Liberals handily – and with no less than 49 per cent of the vote – in the last three provincial elections. In addition to a full slate of Liberal, Progressive Conservative, NDP and Green party candidates (see Q&As below) running for the Etobicoke Centre seat on June 12, John Martins of the People’s Party and Ontario Libertarian Party candidate Alexander Bussmann are also in contention.

■ An issue that I hear about frequently at the door is that many in our community are struggling to find work, especially in their chosen fields. This is particularly true for young people. As an instructor at York University, I understand the link between a quality education and well-paying jobs. To begin with, we must continue to strengthen our education system, facilitate apprenticeship and internship opportunities and support a business climate that provides good quality, well-paying jobs.

■ Reliable, quality transit and transportation is critical to our economy and quality of life. I am an advocate for expanding transit, roads, bridges and highways to ease congestion for Etobicoke commuters. We’ve begun by building the Eglinton Crosstown, the Union Pearson express and expanding subways. Ontario Liberals are the only party with a clear long-term plan to fund transit expansion in the Greater Toronto Area which would mean further expansion in the years to come.

■ Previously with the Boston Consulting Group and now through my own business, I advise large companies on how to invest their money, grow their businesses and find solutions to complex problems, saving them millions of dollars. I am also an instructor at York University’s Schulich School of Business and volunteered my time on a range of community causes. I hope to bring that experience to Queen’s Park to help manage our tax dollars effectively while protecting vital services.

■ Donna Cansfield, our current MPP, has been a tireless advocate for issues concerning seniors and I plan to follow in her footsteps. We must ensure that we continue to expand access and quality of services offered to seniors. Whether seniors wish to stay at home or choose a residential option, we must ensure that our seniors have access to good quality care. This includes long-term, residential, home and hospital care. Drastic cuts to health care aren’t the answer.

■ For me, income inequality and poverty are a major local issue. Today over 370,000 children live in poverty and over 20 per cent more Ontarians use food banks over 2008. We need good jobs in our community. I want to see a job creator tax credit to incent private sector job creation along with a gradual increase in the minimum wage to $12 per hour indexed to inflation. Protecting and creating licensed child care spaces is also key.

■ As a professional urban planner and transit rider, I understand this issue. Transit needs longterm predictable capital and operating financial support from the province. Andrea Horwath and the NDP will provide predictable funding for transit by stopping the no-strings-attached corporate tax cut giveaways planned by the other parties and directing a portion of the revenue to protect and expand transit services in Etobicoke Centre. This is a transit plan that makes sense.

■ I have over 10 years experience as a professional urban planner working municipally and at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. I’m a member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute. I understand how government works and how policy needs to be focused on a few priorities: the needs of families and job creation. I’m raising my young family in Etobicoke Centre in a house originally built for my great-grandparents, who were immigrants from Ukraine.

■ Too many seniors are waiting too long for long-term care. We must build a truly accessible long-term care and homecare system that meets the needs of Ontario’s seniors. Specifically, Andrea Horwath and I are campaigning on a reduction in waiting lists for long-term care for those with complex medical needs and want to see a five-day home care guarantee in place. Finally, it doesn’t make sense to have four LHIN’s overlapping in Etobicoke Centre.

■ Jobs and the economy are and will be my focus. We need to get off the failed path of high unemployment and record levels of debt. Ontario has seen 300,000 manufacturing jobs lost since 2003; and today there are 800,000 Ontarians without a job. Our Million Jobs Plan will eliminate Ontario’s $12 billion a year deficit and work to stabilize the economy so that we once again attract businesses to invest in Ontario

■ Our plan for transit will, for the first time, provide Ontarians with a system where all the pieces fit together. We will build subways, priority being an eastwest express subway that connects Etobicoke and the eastern parts of the city to downtown; we will expand our highways by fixing bottlenecks; and we will expand GO Transit with more rush hour service, express trains all day and two-way service; and all without raising taxes.

■ My family and I are longtime Etobicoke Centre residents and I have been involved and advocating for the PC movement in this riding since 2006. Prior to seeking election as the MPP of this riding, I worked at Queen’s Park in various roles including, legislative advisor and on legislative affairs on the vital portfolio of Economic Development and Trade. I am also a trained lawyer and have practiced family, criminal and real estate law.

■ Our Million Jobs Plan will deliver care closer to home by expanding home care and long-term care availability, and by promoting more types of care at home. Home care that is more easily available and straightforward to receive will mean that people aren’t forced into long-term care before they need it, or into a hospital unnecessarily. We want our seniors to remain in the comfort of their homes as long as they can.

■ I would work to improve the “walkability score” of Etobicoke Centre. By devoting at least one per cent of the Ministry of Transportation budget to a fund for communities to use to support pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, we can expand and upgrade our network of footpaths and sidewalks, etc. Improved “walkability” is shown to have many health, environmental, safety and economic benefits. It also helps us meet and interact with more of our neighbours, neighbourhood businesses, etc.

■ We need a new transportation plan in our province, and we must have the courage to say that we are willing to pay for it. Green MPP’s will demand that Ontario establish a dedicated transit fund to build new transit and support existing transit, and help finance it with dedicated revenue tools that are fair and progressive, such as congestion charges and parking fees.

■ I recently retired from a successful 30-year investment, sales and I.T. career at BMO Nesbitt Burns and IBM Canada Ltd. I now focus on both business and political solutions to our environmental challenges. I am a contributing author at leading climate change communication site, SkepticalScience.com. I was an active volunteer and policy committee leader for Citizens Climate Lobby Canada, 2011-2014. I am a graduate of University of Toronto, Lakehead University and University of Western Ontario.

■ Asked to rank their priorities, many seniors answer that a bright future for their children and grandchildren is at or near the top. The Green Party’s full 2014 platform – focused on jobs, kids and the environment – is a great way to deliver that. We also have a comprehensive health strategy, which specifically recognizes the benefits of accessible and quality home care as an essential part of a continuum of care that respects our seniors.

being really good at two events – in Canada,” he said. Harkness wasn’t the only one heaping praise on Marfo at Friday’s signing event, which also featured a thunderous performance by Father Henry Carr’s famed drumline. Athletic Director Mario Pietrangelo said Marfo has accomplished more in her four years at Father Henry Carr than any other student athlete in the school’s 40-year history. “She is a four-time TDCAA champion, a four-time OFSAA champion, she’s the Metro champion – who yesterday set a new meet record at the championships – and she is also the Canadian champion,” he said, to cheering from the crowd of students. “An incredible achievement for a student athlete who, as a lot of you know, carries herself with great humility.” Marfo thanked her friends, family and people – past and present – at Father Henry Carr. “Thank you for helping me follow my dreams,” she said.

Just a day after shattering her own record at the Metro Track and Field Championships, Father Henry Carr shot putter Obeng Marfo topped off a winning week May 30 by signing with Penn State. Proudly donning a Nittany Lions T-shirt, the 18-year-old athlete was flanked by her older brothers and sister as she accepted the Pennsylvania university’s offer – which came with a full, four-year scholarship totaling $280,000 – in front of her school Friday morning. “The academics were the main thing that made me want to go there,” Marfo told The Guardian in an interview shortly before the official signing ceremony. “They have the best kinesiology program in the country and their women’s (track and field) team is really good. So I’m excited to go down there to study and get to be an athlete for a really good school.” A shot putter since Grade 4, Marfo’s recent successes in the sport include: gold medals in shot put at the 2013 senior girls’

the senior women’s shot put with a throw of 13.31 metres – a result that saw her break the record she set last year by 1.39 metres – Marfo also took home the gold in the senior women’s discus throw competition, an event she recently took up. Coach Jack Harkness, who volunteers with the York University Track Club, called Marfo an “extremely dedicated” and “extremely coachable” athlete. “I’m really excited for Obeng. When I first started working with her, I saw the talent she had and the possibilities open to her,” he said, noting he’s been coaching Marfo for the last three years. “She told me then that she wanted to get a scholarship down in the States, so we’ve been working toward that ever since and I’m really happy it worked out. “Penn State was her first choice all the way through, too, so that makes it even better.” And even though she’s new to the discus throw, Harkness said Marfo may wind up being even better at it than she is at shot put, which, he said, is an impressive feat. “She has the potential to be one of the best ‘doubles’ – which means

Protect your visibility Driving when visibility is poor can test the skills of even the most seasoned and careful motorists. Though even novice drivers know to be especially cautious when driving in snow or heavy rain, extreme weather is not the only thing that can make roadways hazardous for motorists and their passengers. Highway construction that produces debris, poorly lit roadways and driving during certain times of the day when everyone seems to be in a rush can all compromise drivers’ vision. As a result, it’s imperative that motorists take steps to protect their

make a world of difference when driving in hazardous conditions. • Don’t forget to maintain your windshield. A windshield can be a motorist’s best friend or his worst enemy when driving in hazardous conditions, but savvy drivers know there is no excuse for the latter. Windshield clarity is especially important when driving in hazardous conditions, and windshields that have been treated with a repellant are significantly safer than those that have not. • Check windshield washer fluid.

vision when driving in hazardous or even potentially hazardous conditions. • Replace old or ineffective wiper blades. Many motorists are unaware of just how frequently their vehicle wiper blades need to be replaced. Wiper blades should be changed every 90-120 days, as the blades can easily grow brittle and ineffective over time. Depending on how frequently they are used, wiper blades can wear out rather quickly, especially on older vehicles with pitting on the windshield. Wiper blades are relatively inexpensive to replace, and can

Windshield washer fluid is one of those things drivers typically only notice when it isn’t there. Routinely inspect windshield washers to ensure they’re working properly, and top off windshield washer fluid so you know it will be there when you need it. • Clean interior glass and mirrors. It’s easy to overlook interior glass and mirrors when cleaning a car, but a dirty vehicle interior can be as dangerous as it can be unsightly. While coffee-stained cup holders or spilled snacks under vehicle seats are largely cosmetic concerns, dirty interior glass and mirrors can significantly compromise a driver’s vision. Hybrid takes Camry to a new efficiency level features such as dual-zone automatic climate control with cabin air filter and humidity sensor, key lockout protection, a fuel economy meter and Eco indicator, a multi-information display, high-visibility Optitron instrumentation, a smart key system with push button start, electric power steering and hybrid regenerative braking. The XLE adds features like 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, electro chromatic rear view mirror with digital compass, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, anti-theft system, fog lamps and more. What sets the Camry Hybrid apart from much of the midsize pack is its fuel economy. It’s all because of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system on the Camry that includes a 2.5-litre DOHC 16-valve fourcylinder engine with a 105 kW electric drive motor, producing 200 net hp. Power for the system is stored in a sealed nickel-metal hydride battery, stored behind the rear seat. This power is transferred to the front wheels with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT), unlike the regular Camry sedan that uses a six-speed automatic transmission. Another advantage of the hybrid is lower emissions. In fact, Toyota says the Hybrid

Camry sedan has had over the years. It’s a perennial leader in mid-size car sales here and south of the border because it offers what most buyers want in a mid-size offering roominess, reliability and fuel-efficiency. The hybrid version of the Camry offers all of the above, and then improves on the level of fuel-efficiency, particularly when it comes to city driving. In 2013, Canadians purchased more than 3,100 Camry Hybrids, not an insignificant number in this era of niche products. There are two regular trim levels on the Camry Hybrid, the LE and high-end XLE. However, a couple of months ago, Toyota added a special edition SE model that is tested here. The SE will be available for a limited time only and blends the regular hybrid powertrain with a sporty appearance package. It includes a full body skirt package, rear spoiler, sport-style grille and other exterior features. Inside, the cabin gets unique front sport seats with special fabric, a power adjustable driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, aluminum scuff plates and more. It is priced at $29,540, just a touch below the XLE starting price of $29,615. The LE starts at $27,760. Even the base LE is well dressed with

A few years ago when I wrote about gaselectric hybrids, I was talking about a concept that was totally foreign to many readers. That’s certainly not the case these days thanks in a large part to Toyota and its emphasis on hybrid technology, particularly with the Prius model. The Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club (ELBC) is set to host the 2014 Canadian Junior Championships this August – and the group is hoping to recruit a few local contenders to vie for a national title in the U18 and U25 events. To those ends, the club has invited a few local schools to bring its physical education classes out to the club greens to try out the sport, starting with the two Grade 8 classes from Our Lady of Sorrows who spent the morning last Friday learning the basics from ELBC bowlers. The students, said ELBC member Hank Spencer, picked up the game “very quickly” and seemed to enjoy the experience – with many expressing an interest in joining the club when they heard that a junior membership is just $25 a year. That fee, Spencer added, includes coaching, use of club bowls and a locker. ELBC will host t h e Ca n a d i a n Ju n i o r

Four home games remaining It doesn’t look like the Mimico Mountaineers Jr. B lacrosse team will be extending its season into the summer. With some close losses – including a recent frustrating stretch of four losses where the margin of defeat was two goals or less – they’re past the midway point with a 3-10 record and only seven games remaining. Last season only one of the 16 playoff-bound teams (which included Mimico) had a sub-.500 record).

For fans of Canada’s national summer sport, the venerable franchise has four home games remaining at Mimico Arena: • this Friday, June 6, 8 p.m. against Newmarket Saints (5-7); • Saturday, June 14, 7 p.m. against the Oakville Buzz (8-4); • Sunday, June 15, 7 p.m. against the Halton Hills Bulldogs (8-3); • and Friday, June 20, 8 p.m. against the Markham

Ironheads (5-9). The club’s Jr. C team has a 2-5 record heading into a three-game homestand: • Thursday, June 5, 8 p.m. at Long Branch Arena against Halton Hills; • Sunday, June 8, 4 p.m. against Caledon at Mimico Arena; • and Saturday, June 14, 4 p.m. against Oakville at Mimico Arena.

Patriots coach Jason Fortier taking on GM duties The Toronto Lakeshore Patriots’ new general manager is very familiar with the junior hockey team which enjoyed considerable success this past season. That’s because Jason Fortier, 39, was coach last season for the team, based out of Etobicoke’s Westwood Arena. The team won the provincial and regional playoff titles before finally running out

of steam at the nationals in Vernon, British Columbia. Fortier is remaining as coach but adding GM duties after the pre-announced departure of Mike Tarantino, the Ontario Jr. A league’s executive of the year. Tarantino concentrated solely on GM duties this past season with the Patriots after serving the dual role as coach-GM for the previous three seasons.

He is heading back into the coaching ranks with the rival Oakville Blades. A former Blades’ player, Tarantino is basically heading home – he’s a high school teacher in Oakville and lives just outside of Oakville’s border in Burlington, which will make for a much shorter commute.

Islington Rangers president comes full circle NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com

training among its volunteer coaches and also to ensure local field availability. The split between boys and girls, he added, is also nudging its way to equal numbers having cracked the 60/40 barrier. Taking over the reins from his late father marks a full circle for Harapyn, a native of Etobicoke who attended Etobicoke’s Bishop Allen Academy. “I grew up playing at Islington Rangers,” he said. He also grew up playing hockey in the winter, starting out in the Humber Valley Hockey Association house league program and eventually earning a short stint at the top triple-A level. Eventually, however, as is

Roman Harapyn is striving to a continue a legacy at the Islington Rangers youth soccer club that his late father Michael, who died in March of last year, helped start. “My father originally started the club with three other gentlemen,” said Harapyn, the club’s president, in a recent interview. “It started with four teams, and it grew to the point where we’re probably over 90 teams right now.” Those teams are split roughly between 20 rep and 70 house league. The league could offer more teams, he said, but is growing slowly to ensure consistent skills

typical for many elite athletes, he had to make choice, with soccer easily winning out. At 15 he joined the youth program of the Toronto Blizzard and then into the Canadian national U-19 development program. A goaltender, he turned down U.S. college sponsorship offers and, instead, spent nearly a decade in the game playing for a number of pro and semi-pro clubs on both sides of the Atlantic. The many contacts he forged as a player have now come in handy as the league concentrates not just on the increased quantity of players but also striving to continually increase the quality of coaches both in its rep and house league programs.

Towards that goal, he said, the league is moving “to a system where every rep team is now assigned a technical coach.” And these coaches, he said, are also “going to filter through the house league.” Some rep clubs have already organized tours to Europe and the plan, he said, is to have more teams pursue that option. The club is happy to be playing outdoors after wrapping up a successful indoor season, including “a lot of training sessions at Lakeshore Collegiate”, which for the second year in a row featured a dome over its turfed field for the winter.

Although they’re outdoors now, the Islington Rangers Soccer Club didn’t let the slow-to-arrive spring hamper their training, thanks to Lakeshore Collegiate’s dome.
