The Pan Am Path comes alive on Sunday, June 14 with a parade at Sir Casimir Gzowski Park, west of 1751 Lake Shore Blvd. W. on Sunday, June 14. Join workshops in flag making at 10 a.m., mural creation at 11 a.m. and see a Ballet Creole presentation at noon. The Walking Wave parade

Garage fire sparked by rags, paint, linseed and citronella oils

hey, what’s on your shirt?

Eleven firetrucks, 34 firefighters respond to call CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Plumes of thick, black smoke and reports of explosions accompanied a one-alarm fire in Etobicoke on Saturday morning. Toronto fire Capt. David Eckerman said 11 fire trucks and 34 firefighters responded to the scene of the garage fire at 225 Burnhamthorpe Rd. (just west of Kipling Avenue) at around 11:30 a.m. on June 6. “Callers prior to our arrival were reporting explosions from within the garage,” Eckerman said of the fire, which engulfed a two-car detached garage located in the backyard of the residential property in central Etobicoke. “Immediately upon leaving the station, there was a huge column of smoke that could be seen,” he added. Eckerman said the fire was believed to have originated in a metal woodshed located on the property next door to the garage, and ignited when a combination of oily rags, paint, linseed and citronella oils being improperly stored there spontaneously combusted and the flames spread. “When the fire got rolling with other fuel materials, it then breached the thin metal wall of the toolshed and ignited the contents within it, which then extended up onto the fascia of the neighbour’s detached, two-car garage at 225 Burnhamthorpe Rd.”

Eckerman reported a “heavy fire load” at the garage fire, which necessitated the use of a 65-millimetre hose “just so we could get a larger supply of water onto it.” Despite repor ts that the homeowners at 225 Burnhamthorpe Rd. were out at the time of the fire, firefighters did a search of the home – which suffered only exterior damage from the “radiant heat” coming off the garage blaze – and found it to be clear, Eckerman said. No injuries were reported. While the garage blaze was knocked down by 11:47 a.m., Eckerman said a secondary fire that “completely

destroyed” an older model Volvo parked just outside the garage was put out a few minutes later. Final damage estimates are not yet available. With the improper storage of oily rags believed to be the cause of this particular blaze, Eckerman cautioned residents to take extra care when storing such materials in future. “When you do store oily rags, you need to have a metal container, so that if they do combust, the fire cannot spread,” he urged. “Even better, let them air dry in an unfolded manner so they can’t create enough heat to ignite the cotton rag.”

Improved transportation should be a Pan Am legacy I

magine a legacy from the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games where people get around this city in a more efficient fashion. Given the preparations being made for the Games’ traffic influx, it’s not an unrealistic hope. Hundreds of thousands of additional people are expected in the city and the Greater Toronto Area for the Games next month, so it’s important for everyone to do some transportation planning. This challenge on our roads will be in addition to other planned road construcour view tion projects during the summer months. Toronto stands Key to this planning process – for residents, businesses and to benefit after visitors – will be understanding Games are over the tools and resources available to help get around the city. This week a web-based transportation planner, accessible at www.2015gamestripplanner.ca, was launched by the province. It provides real-time traffic details, such as road closures, traffic speeds, HOV lane locations, a booking feature for accessible parking spots and more. An app is also available for download on Apple, Android and Blackberry devices. That announcement comes a day after GO Transit unveiled its enhanced service plans for the Games. These include more service on routes that serve major events and that Games tickets can be used as valid fare on GO on the day of that event. There’s an additional opportunity from all of this transportation preparation that stretches well into the future: applying what’s being learned. Traffic is not a new issue to the city. What successes can be shared from these preparations? What lessons can be learned? We have to study the traffic patterns that unfold during the Games. We have to measure the impact of initiatives such as HOV lanes. Surely there are aspects of the web trip planner that can be co-opted for travelling within the city after the Games are done? With the transportation planning, there are additional potential benefits for the city – not just for future special events, but for day-to-day life. That’s what a legacy is all about.

Toronto council will have to deal with budget shortfall at some point

R

emember the 2015 budget? It’s been a few months now, and there’s been a lot of water under the elevated highway, as it were, so it’s understandable if you don’t. The takeaway: property tax increases were kept reasonable, in spite of the fact that Toronto was hit with an $86-million shortfall due to housing costs downloaded by the provincial government. Council dealt with that shortfall with some cuts, and a $60-million “loan” from the city’s capital investment program: money that will have to be replenished over the next several years. As dubious councillors voted to approve the scheme, Mayor John Tory promised that soon he would be offering up a plan as to how best to pay

david nickle the city back that loan to the city’s capital investments. Two per cent cuts to spending across all departments was one of the ideas bandied about. This week, Toronto’s budget committee received and passed on Tory’s more refined plan: which amounted to not much more – and in important ways considerably less – than that. Tory sent a letter to the committee, asking that city departments and cityfunded agencies like the TTC all be asked to find two per cent of savings. The letter is not legally binding – only council as a whole can give direction to the city’s civil service – but

it’s clear enough as far as it goes. Tory goes on, however, to ask for some other things: he would like to make sure that the property tax increase remains at or below the rate of inflation, and wants the city to continue to fund public transit in an aggressive way. Oh, and these efficiencies mustn’t lead to any reductions in service. On June 9, the city’s budget committee had a look at the letter and sent it off to city staff. As budget chief Gary Crawford noted, these kinds of letters have come out of every mayor’s office since Mel Lastman. There have rarely been times that their advice has been taken to the letter, and Crawford admitted after the meeting that over the next few years council will probably have to figure

out some other measures in order to finally balance the budget. Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks, something of a critic on these matters, put things more bluntly. “There will come a day when we have a stark choice between reducing the services we deliver to people and finding a way to pay for them,” he said. “Last term, we had a mayor incapable of facing that choice. I’m hoping this council is a little more adult because the longer we put this off the worse it gets.” I guess we’ll see just how bad it gets over the next few years. Anti-abortion images not Wynne Liberals doing little to equivalent to ‘hate’: reader show accountability to taxpayers To the editor: Re: ‘Anti-abortion flyers equal to ‘hate’ mail, says residents,’ News, June 4 I was absolutely surprised at the reaction of some residents in Etobicoke including Wendy Wong at the pro-life flyer showing Justin Trudeau and an aborted baby at 10 weeks. How does this constitute ‘hate’ mail? How is it that factual pictures that show the reality of abortion are dismissed as ‘hate’? Would the showing of dead Holocaust victims, and

the victims of ISIS in Syria and Iraq constitute ‘hate’? I think the bottom line reality here is that we as a society do not want to face the ugly reality of what abortion does to the unborn. Out of sight, out of mind is the general position we as a society take. We are more appalled at the killing of animals than we are with unborn human beings. Wendy Wong’s arguments are nothing short of a red herring to obfuscate the reality of abortion. Justin Trudeau claims to be a champion of women’s rights and he cites the Charter.

Yet, at the same time, Trudeau rules his Liberal party with a fascist-like mentality which does not allow his members to follow their convictions and conscience on the subject of abortion, unless it is pro-choice. In effect Trudeau violates their Charter rights in attacking the freedom of one’s conscience. Telling the truth, and showing the truth is not ‘hate’. Suppressing and concealing truth on the other hand, is hatred towards our Charter freedoms. Dr. Tony Costa

Flyers show truth behind abortion: reader

To the editor: Re: ‘Anti-abortion flyers equal to ‘hate’ mail, says resident,’ News, June 4 Wendy Wong is wrong about pro-life flyers. The hate comes from those

who dispatch the unborn with a callous indifference to life. The abortion industry needs to be eradicated with the same venom they use. The public needs to be presented with the gruesome

pictures of this crime so we are all aware of the vicious brutality of the act. Bring on the pictures so that at least the eye is offended. Terry Hibbert

To the editor: Any level of elected government in our democratic system must be accountable to the taxpayer. Every level of government has its mandates based on the platform upon which it won the majority vote to put them into office. The elected government is responsible to represent all of the electorate by taking actions based on the mandate it was elected on. Furthermore, a demonstrated process of due diligence before passing any legislation and law is expected. Government also has a moral responsibility to consider and respect the input of the elected opposition. They offer material value to a sitting government – a check and bal-

ance not to be summarily dismissed out of hand merely because of being a majority position. The current provincial Liberal government appears to be taking liberties with its mandate to govern when it plans to sell off public assets relating to the energy sector in order to cover more than a billion dollars for the recent cancelling of power infrastructure projects by its predecessors, one of among several questionable spending fiascos. As if that was not bad enough, Kathleen Wynne’s government is now going to sell off Hydro One assets to make up shortfalls. ‘abysmal’ track record As taxpayers who expect the government to make the most considered fiscal decisions on our behalf, it

The One Day Sales Event. June 14.

seems that it track record in the health care and energy sector has been abysmal. It is arrogant of the government to justify its action plan without accountability for such an irreversible decision. How is selling Hydro One going to have a better outcome? Is the development of infrastructure with the proceeds of this sale a good deal for the taxpayer? Selling off assets at this time is similar to selling your house so you can continue a lifestyle you couldn’t afford in the first place. The government needs to exercise austerity and belt tightening internally before squandering anymore of our assets. John Huggins, B.A.Sc., P.Eng., and Cynthia Kennedy-Huggins, B.Sc.

Emerging artists take on Kre-a-tiv U-turn to pass lessons on to kids

T

he monarch butterfly, a symbol of transformation, feeds on milk-

weed. The Milkweed Collective, a group of established artists, poets and performers in Etobicoke, feeds on transformation. The professional artisteducators from Milkweed have partnered with the City of Toronto’s Cultural Hotspot initiative for a signature project called Kre-a-tiv U-turn (KUT), an apprenticeship program that will help young artists spread their creative wings. Milkweed staff will mentor seven emerging artists, between the ages of 18 and 25, as they organize a collective exhibit, provide summer arts programming and facilitate the Exploring Creativity in Depth (ECID) program to children in the community. The five-hour ECID workshop, developed by Milkweed’s director Austin Clarkson, enables students to express personal thoughts and feelings through two original drawings. One is based on reflections of a professional piece of artwork, and the other is based on the discussions and emotions spawned from the initial drawing. ECID fosters self-awareness, mutual understanding and creativity, and has been taught to more than 6,000 elementary school students in Etobicoke since 2002. “This program allows us to say everyone has a creative imagination, not just socalled professional artists,” Clarkson said. He said the seven protégés in KUT, who all come from credible arts schools, demonstrate how the education system is oriented to critical thinking and techniques as opposed to accessing authentic creative personalities. “They’ve never experienced

anything like this. Education emphasizes reason over imagination, and it should really balance the two,” he said. Milkweed member Ina Puchala, an abstract expressionist painter and director of KUT, agrees with Clarkson and specifically chose candidates from various disciplines open to new ways of learning and exploring. “The idea of the artist being secluded and sheltered in a studio has fizzled out. There’s a turn towards getting out into the community, opening up the door, integrating with talent and making art accessible to people at any level,” she said. The emerging artists are familiarizing themselves with the ECID philosophies by actually going through the workshop during their

weekend-long training sessions. Etobicoke’s Claudia Di Nucci, a 23-year-old artist in the KUT program, said she can see transformation in her own pieces. “In one drawing I started out with a few dark colours, but in my second, after a group discussion, the lines were a lot looser and there

was a lot of vibrancy in the colours. I didn’t hold back,” she said. “It stops you from being stuck in your own head, and lets your creativity flow.” Visual artist Ksenia Vendrova, 23, said she sees changes in her work that cross over into her life outside the studio. “I’m able to connect with

myself and my own struggles and experiences in this artwork. Even after four years of studying art, I wasn’t able to connect with my work on such a level,” she said. The emerging artists’ revelations will permeate to the youth they will be instructing this summer. Alana Staszczyszyn, a 19-year-old harpist, com-

poser and visual artist from Etobicoke School of the Arts, said teaching the ECID program will help remove the fear of failure plaguing many young minds. “The stigma that art has to be a certain thing or look a certain way is really damaging for children in our culture. It stops them from wanting to be creative,” she said. “I heard lot of kids come out ECID saying ‘Hey mommy, I’m an artist now.’ I really hope that carries through when we do it too. I hope they see everything has its own beauty in its own way.” KUT will be running summer ar ts camps at Richview and Mimico libraries and Arts Etobicoke in July open to youth ages eight to 15. KUT will culminate during Culture Days with a monthlong exhibit of the artists’ and children’s artwork in September and a multi-arts performance Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 27 at Richview library. The emerging artists will be responsible for planning the summer arts programs suitable for each venue, as well as running a blog documenting their experiences and progress, “It’s really critical that they take ownership of this. They end up driving the project,” Puchala said. Clarkson said the objective is to create communities of artists like the one Milkweed is forming with the emerging artists. “Milkweed is inspiring a younger generation to continue giving children the opportunity to explore their imagination and creativity,” Di Nucci said. “The thought that they believe we, as young artists, can take this on is really touching. We feel blessed.”

CONSUMER FEATURE

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85-Alive” program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners like Anita P. don’t see a prob-

lem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting have been serving the needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 14 times (including 2015).

Denham sings anthem’s French version >>>from page 1 The song was officially released by TO2015 and the CBC Thursday, May 28 with versions available by Serena Ryder in English, Eva Avila in Spanish and Denham in French. Denham, the seasoned singer, songwriter, producer and vocal coach, who has called Etobicoke home since 2009, said she was blown away the song didn’t go to a celebrity writer or producer. “We were pleasantly surprised that politics didn’t bump our song out of being chosen,” she said.

big secret The song was initially on hold with Pan Am, and Denham received official word that it had been selected in November 2014. “They said it has to be a really big secret. A really long secret,” said Denham, laughing. Now that the secret it out, she hopes the song will bring people together.

Bobby John, left, Jasmine Denham and Murray Daigle are the songwriters of the TO2015 anthem ‘Together We Are One’.

“It’s a song for the people,” she said. “We wanted to express everyone being on a level playing field, that athletes, fans and people interested in arts and culture could all have this common thing that unites them.” Denham said she was honoured to lend her voice to the official French version. “I can express and be more passionate about what I sing when I’ve written it,” she said. “I’m bilingual and have a lot

of family across Canada who don’t even speak English. It’s exciting to be representing that side of my heritage.” Come July, ‘Together We Are One’ will surely be stuck in heads countrywide. “Honestly, it’s the best song I’ve ever written. I can’t believe it’s real,” she said. The official song is available on iTunes in English ‘Together We Are One’, French ‘Ensemble On Est Immense’ and Spanish ‘Unidos Somo Mas’.

Somali soccer players learn skills, get fit, on girls-only team Toronto Girls Soccer Association’s mandate is to instill love of sport in girls’ lives CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When Hanan Warsame first started the Toronto Girls Soccer Association (TGSA) six months ago, her young charges could hardly do a lap of the Kipling Collegiate gym without collapsing in heaps – but what a difference half a year makes. These days, the girls on Warsame’s fledgling year-round soccer team – the vast majority of whom hail from north Etobicoke’s Somali Muslim community – can’t seem to get enough exercise. “I’ve learned how to do kickups, how to pass, and how to score,” 10-year-old Mariam enthused at a recent TGSA practice, shortly before running off to join her teammates for an intense session of running and dribbling drills. “I’ve also learned how to keep the ball up in the air and do headers. It’s cool.” Mariam and her teammates

weren’t always so enthusiastic about soccer, though – especially the running part. “It was really challenging in the beginning. It was very shocking for me to see these girls not be able to run more than two minutes without asking for a water break – and it wasn’t even just one or two of them, it was, like, 95 per cent of them,” said Warsame of the 25 girls aged five to 13 who play on the TGSA team for two hours every Tuesday and Saturday evening. “But now these girls, they can run, because I pushed them and pushed them and pushed them. They hated me for it at first, but now they love it and they want to keep on running.” Born in Somalia, 25-yearold Warsame was raised by her soccer fanatic father alongside an equally soccer-loving older brother in the Netherlands. So it wasn’t surprising when, by age four, she too had taken up

the sport with a vengeance. “I was always playing soccer, always had a ball playing on the streets outside, to the point I was playing four times a week on two different teams,” the Dixon Road area resident said during a break from a recent TGSA practice at Kipling Collegiate. After a short hiatus from

Over 50 Years of Service to Our Community

the sport during her university days, Warsame moved to Toronto two years ago and soon began volunteer coaching a young boys’ soccer team. It was while overseeing those boys that she said she began to take notice of her players’ sisters sitting bored on the sidelines – many of them looking like they wished they could be out

there playing, too. “In our culture, girls are often not the priority, so I thought why should I wait,” said Warsame, noting that she had TGSA registered as a notfor-profit organization last May, and then began seeking out volunteers and sponsorships to help make her dream girls team a reality. One of the first people Warsame approached to sponsor TGSA was well-known Somali broadcaster Hodan Nalayeh, whose Integration TV program was recently picked up by Feva TV and will now be broadcast across Canada, the U.S., the Caribbean and parts of Africa. Nalayeh was “very supportive” of the idea of empowering her young female soccer players Warsame said and readily agreed to sponsor TGSA’s uniforms – which Warsame said consists of ‘Integration TV’ emblazoned long-sleeved team jersey and pants, in accor-

dance with parents’ wishes that their daughters be modestly dressed. “I was blessed that I was able to get my show on the air, so when Hanan came to me (about sponsoring TGSA), I thought it was a great opportunity to pass my blessings on to someone else and help make her dream come true,” said Nalayeh, while watching the girls on the team run through drills wearing their Integration TV jerseys. In order to expand TGSA, Warsame said she’s hoping for the support of local businesses and sponsors willing to offer the financial support necessary to help the team secure more player uniforms, more gym time, and an outdoor field for the summer season. For more information about TGSA and/sponsorship and volunteer opportunities with the team, go to www.torontogsa. com or email info@torontogsa. com

Braeburn teacher retires after 25 years at school

Alice Whitman – ‘a natural teacher’ – will retire to her native Nova Scotia this summer

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Dare to dream it. Work to achieve it. The colourful posters at the front of her Grade 1 classroom speak to the most rewarding aspect of Alice Whitman’s three-decade elementary teaching career. “I love the ‘aha moment,’” she said on the eve of her retirement. “When the children get it. You can see they understand. “I love learning myself. ‘Lifelong learning’ is the school board’s motto. That’s exactly what life is all about.” Whitman, 60, will retire at the end of this month after working her entire 25-year Toronto elementary teaching career at Braeburn Junior School in the Islington Avenue and Albion Road area. “It’s hard to believe it’s over,” she said, reflecting on her education vocation in the school’s

library. “I never expected to be in the city so long and like it. I remember being in Newfoundland in a friend’s garden and saying, ‘I’ll never live in the city.’” Whitman grew up in “small town” Cape Breton, where she taught for seven years before flying to Toronto in 1990 to apply for a teaching position after reading an ad in a Nova Scotia newspaper. “At age seven, I remember sitting in school and thinking, ‘I’m going to be a teacher,’” she recalled. “It has never left me. I always loved children, the little ones. I feel it’s a calling to come to teaching.” Whitman used a Gestetner machine to copy students’ work in the early days. In 1997, a photocopier came to the school. Today, laptops, the Internet and a Smart Board are daily tools in her classroom instruction. “Using a Smart Board enhances the programs I’m

teaching. The children grasp the content quickly,” she said. “And I’m learning more about subjects, too.” While primary classes were completely play-based when she started – “There were gokarts and scooters outside,

and sand and a kitchen in the classroom” – today, the Toronto public school board has eliminated play during instruction time, she said. But students now come to Grade 1 “solid”, knowing how to read and write she said.

Her six- and seven-year-old charges are “chatty,” she said. “They’re always talking. They’re very inquisitive. They love praise. I give them stickers a lot. “They always do their best. They try hard. They love coming to school. They love art, and gym.” Principal Andre Patterson called Whitman a “silent leader” who works behind the scenes to assist and emotionally support her colleagues in times of grief and celebration. “She not only believes in the kids, but in the people she works with,” he said. Whitman’s quarter-century Toronto teaching career spent at one school is rare, Patterson said, in an age when both teachers and principals typically work in many schools throughout their careers. He called her his “master teacher.” “Alice is a natural teacher. There is never a behaviour

problem in her class,” he said. “She has a sense of magic with the kids. They’re always engaged and learning.” Whitman taught reading recovery to colleague Raminder Padda’s Grade 1 class. “Alice is a wonderful teacher,” Padda said. “She loves the kids. She’s very dedicated to them. “Everybody would have to have Ms. Whitman as their Grade 1 teacher. If I had kids, I’d want her to be their teacher.” Next month, Whitman will move to the Annapolis Valley in her native Nova Scotia to be near her parents. “I love it there. It’s beautiful,” she said. “I have lots of cousins, friends. We have bonfires in the summer on the Bay of Fundy shore. There’s a hiking group there. My friend has a double kayak. I love kayaking.”

Wesley Mimico Place a community for seniors It’s easy to feel at home in Mimico, a quiet commuter village by the lake, with a small town feel. The Wesley Mimico United Church, was built in between 1922 and 1924 on the corner of Mimico Avenue and Station Road to serve the growing Methodist congregation in Mimico. Over the years , the church housed the first gymnasium in the lakeshore area, and a number of other community service initiatives. Though the parish has been in decline for some years, Wesley Mimico United Church, along with Bells of Mimico and the Wesley Mimico Place Board of Directors, has found a new way to serve the community. Slated for occupation in 2016 is Wesley Mimico Place, which will restore the church, as well as include housing for seniors, a community centre and other facilities. The architect on the project is Robert Reimers, who is behind many churches and non-profit housing projects including Bethel Green Seniors Residence, another church conversion housing 19 units.

In Wesley Mimico Place, the 30 owner-occupied one, two, and three-bedroom suites are designed for seniors over 55. The building and neighbourhood provide a strong sense of community for seniors looking to downsize, while remaining independent. Residents can make full use of the lounge area, exercise room, private second floor terrace, gardens and meditation area, without the hassle of home maintenance. All around Wesley Mimico Place, shops, services, restaurants, and parks on Lake Ontario are a short walk away. Public bus service is right at the doorstep – about 20 minutes to the subway – and the Queen streetcar is steps away. Life Lease units occupy a space

somewhere between renting and owning. Owners have equity in their unit and have the right to occupy it for the rest of their lives. The modestly priced units will also help seniors stretch their budget well into retirement, as there is no HST or land transfer tax applied to Life Lease units unlike a condo. If you are considering downsizing from a single-family home to a more manageable unit, Wesley Mimico Place is offering a workshop in transitioning and decluttering on Saturday, June 13. Suites are now on sale. For more details on Wesley Mimco Place and the transitioning workshop visit the presentation centre at 2405 Lake Shore Blvd. W. Suite 403 or the website www.wesleymimico.org

Project Pharaoh raids target Monstarz gang Guns, cocaine, vehicles, cash seized; more than 60 arrests, including a Hamilton cop ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A Hamilton police officer is among the more than 60 people arrested in Project Pharaoh, a lengthy investigation that focused on a Rexdale street gang called Monstarz. “That group took us to Hamilton where they met up with some other criminal organizations and communicated with them. That’s when we came in contact with that officer,” Insp. Bryan Bott of the guns and gangs task force told reporters during a Friday, June 5 news conference where police displayed some of the guns and drugs seized in the probe. Craig Ruthowsky, 41, of Hamilton, a 16-year veteran of the Hamilton Police Service, has been charged with breach of trust, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence (traffic cocaine), participate in activities of a criminal organization, and commission of an indictable offence for a criminal organization. He has been suspended with pay since June 2012 in relation to allegations previous to Project Pharaoh. Police launched the project in September, and it culminated Thursday morning with 50 raids across the Golden Horseshoe area. Acting Toronto police Chief Jim Ramer said associates of the Monstarz gang were involved in 44 violent incidents in and around Rexdale since May 2011, including robberies, shootings and murders “with direct links to possession and trafficking of illicit drugs and firearms.” One such incident happened May 30, 2014 when a man opened fire in an apartment complex on Mount Olive Drive, wounding a woman and two men. “One of the shooting victims was driven to Etobiokce General hospital by a friend,” Ramer said. “When the friend

exited the hospital, a gunman opened fire on the individual, hitting him in the parking lot and then striking the windows of the hospital in the emergency centre, and patients and hospital staff were then sent diving for cover.” The emergency department of both Etobicoke General and Sunnybrook hospital were placed on lockdown for several hours as a result. “It was through sheer luck that no innocent victim was either wounded or killed,” Ramer said of the shooting outside the hospital, noting the incident was “determined to be directly linked to a gang feud involving the Monstarz.” Ramer said the gang and many of its affiliates have now been dismantled. “Several of the arrested parties, including the leaders of the Monstarz gang, have lengthy criminal histories, and these arrests have removed many violent and armed criminal gang members from our communities.” As Project Pharaoh progressed, said Ramer, “it became evident that Monstarz had connections to the criminal element that stretched well beyond Rexdale, the City of Toronto

and even the GTA.” Police made arrests and executed search warrants in Toronto, Peel, Halton, Ha m i l t o n , B a r r i e a n d Brantford; more than 700 officers were involved in the operation. Police have laid 379 charges in connection with the investigation, which led to the seizure of 14 firearms, 33 kilos of cocaine, 15 vehicles and nearly $200,000 cash. The total value of the drugs seized is $3.8 million. Bott alleged Monstarz was potentially involved in eight homicides, including the execution-style murder of 25-year-old Neeko Mitchell outside a north Etobicoke community centre on Nov. 24, 2013 and the shooting death of 22-year-old Travis Tash in North York on Sept. 11. The inspector noted Monstarz isn’t a street-level organization. “The type of activity they were involved in would be consistent with mid-level drug trafficking, firearms trafficking.” The investigation was led by Toronto police’s gun and gang task force and the OPP’s provincial weapons unit.

Arrests made in Furniture Bank thefts Toronto police have arrested two Quebec men in connection with catalytic converter thefts from large trucks across the city valued at $1.5 million. Major Crime Unit officers from Toronto police’s 31 and 22 divisions partnered with several other police units in a four-month investigation into the city-wide thefts. Catalytic converters convert engine pollutants into

less-harmful emissions before they leave a vehicle’s exhaust system. Thieves target catalytic converters for their precious metals, police said. Toronto police Const. Jeniffer Sidhu confirmed Tuesday Etobicoke-based Furniture Bank was one of companies targeted by the thefts. Most of Furniture Bank’s fleet was parked in late

February after thieves stole its delivery trucks’ exhaust system parts from its Etobicoke offices. Truck companies rallied to assist the charity, which delivers gently used donated furniture to people in need. Christian Ducas, 34, Carl Savoie, 34 , both of Quebec have been charged. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 416222-TIPS (8477).

Make your posture matter Do you spend most of your day sitting, whether it’s at work, in the car, on public transport, or watching TV? Well, you’re not alone. Canada is a nation of sitters and it can take its toll on our health. Almost all of us will suffer from back pain at some point in our lives. In fact, low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Its adverse health effects also have a large impact in Ontario. One in five Ontarians experience chronic back problems and low back pain is the second largest contributing factor to lost work time, behind the common cold. The direct and indirect costs of low back pain amount to $1.2 billion a year in Ontario alone,

making this ailment a major burden on our province’s economy and health care system. You might ask the following question: How do I know if I have bad posture? • When you look at yourself straight on in the mirror, one shoulder looks higher than the other. • If you stand with your back against the wall, you have to push your head back to get it to touch the wall. Poor sitting and standing habits, obesity, poor work environment, pregnancy, weak core muscles (abs), high-heeled shoes and tight muscles all contribute to bad posture.

Secrets revealed to help you…

Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

T

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Dr. Peter Ng has a special interest in natural pain relief and Chinese medicine.

Empty seats mark launch of UP line The Union Pearson (UP) Express officially launched last week to great fanfare, and empty seats. Saturday, June 6 marked the first day of service for UP, which promises to operate four trains an hour for nearly 20 hours every day. That means one million fewer car trips to Toronto’s Pearson airport in UP’s first year of operation alone, according to Metrolinx. But even with free rides taken into account, many UP trains were half-empty on Saturday, leaving some to wonder if the service will ever be viable in the long run. TO TAKE ACTION ON GRAFFITI wMETROLINX

Metrolinx is promising to deal with complaints of graffiti adorning the new UP sound walls. The walls are up in sections along the Georgetown South rail corridor and are intended to reduce the noise and vibration from diesel-powered UP trains. Last Friday, local activist Kevin Putnam posted a picture

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT showing tags on the sound walls erected along the West Toronto Railpath, which he claimed have been there for weeks. This week, Metrolinx executive Gord Troughton confirmed arrangements were made for a private contractor to remove the graffiti from the noise walls. rates jump during SUBWAY halt wUBER

The controversial taxi alternative Uber took heat after it significantly raised fares during Monday’s TTC meltdown. Customers who ordered an Uber vehicle off their mobile devices – after it was reported the entire TTC subway system was down due to a power outage – reported fare hikes far exceeding the usual rate. That’s the usual operating policy for Uber which claims charging higher rates during busy periods “incentivize” drivers to want to join the

ridesharing service. MORE ABOUT COMPLETE STREETS wLEARN

The idea of a street acting as more than just a way to get around has gained traction among civic planners. Now the city is hoping to get public feedback for how it can create future Complete Streets which take into account the needs of all users, such as people who walk, bicycle, take transit or drive. They also consider other uses like sidewalk cafés, street furniture, street trees, utilities, and stormwater management. The city is hosting an open house at the Central YMCA, located at 20 Grosvenor Street on Thursday, June 18, plus organizing “moving conversations” about the matter in North York and Etobicoke. For more information on what’s planned, check out www.toronto.ca/completestreets
