Teen Suzuki cellists embark on China tour Gofundme page at almost $2,500 of $14K goal for 10-day performance trip across the country TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Six Etobicoke Suzuki Music senior cellists’ strings will soar this month, performing everything from Bach’s Air on the G String to music from the feature film, Psycho, in large concert halls half a world away.

The teen musicians, ages 13 to 17, will experience the “chance of a lifetime” as they join the Performance Ensemble of Canada to perform two-hour concerts starting March 10 before Chinese parents and their children in five East China cities from Shanghai to Beijing.

Etobicoke Suzuki Music (ESM) parent Trish Renna Zado launched a crowdfunding campaign on gofundme, titled Support Our Strings Trip to China, to raise $14,000 to help subsidize the musicians’ 10-day travel expenses.

By mid-day Tuesday, funds reached almost $2,500, most donated by friends and family.

The ESM cellists will join the ensemble of 60 youth violinists, cellists and dancers ages 10 to 17 from Suzuki Music schools in Guelph, Kingston and Montreal.

Teen cellists Nicholas Williams, Daniel Esser, Else Sather, Mara Rogers, Natasha Zado and Chantal Fournier have each been studying with Suzuki Music for more than a decade.

ESM operates out of the PLAST Huculak Centre at 516 The Kingsway, complete with concert hall, teaching rooms and pianos. Students receive one class of private instruction and a group class a week, as well as two annual concerts, a solo recital and book recitals.

The Suzuki Method, developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in Japan in the 1940s, is based on the belief children are capable of developing musical abilities as well as they develop language.

“We use the word ‘mother tongue,” Balmer said. “Dr. Suzuki took the idea that really small children are able to develop their own very complex language. What is it that makes it so easy for them to learn language? They’re immersed in it, and it is reinforced because they’re hearing it all the time at home. Why can’t we apply that learning to becoming a musician?”

Etobicoke residents honoured by Ukrainian president Two Etobicoke residents were recognized by the president of Ukraine for their participation in the Canada-Ukraine Foundation’s medical mission currently being undertaken in Kyiv.

Dr. Oleh Antonyshyn, mission lead and plastic surgeon, was presented by President Petro Poroshenko with the Order of Merit (bestowed on men), while Krystina Waler, director of Humanitarian Initiatives for the CanadaUkraine Foundation, was awarded the Order of Princess Olga (bestowed on women) in a ceremony Feb. 24.

Both awards recognize “outstanding achievements of service to Ukraine.”

Professional storytelling engages students during African Heritage Month TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com His parents fled slavery in Kentucky on the Underground Railroad.

He was born in Colchester, Ont. in 1844. He showed interest in mechanics at an early age, one of 12 children raised in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in the mid-1800s.

He invented a lubricating oil cup that allowed the continuous oiling of steam engines while the train moved. The invention resulted in the term, “the real McCoy.” He filed and received nearly 60 patents in his lifetime.

Dian Marie Bridge, a theatre actor, director and producer, who works as a professional storyteller with Arts Express, brought Elijah McCoy to dramatic life last Friday morning first for Twentieth Street Junior School students in grades 3, 4 and 5.

Bridge told the tale of All Aboard! Elijah McCoy’s Steam Engine by Monica Kulling, illustrated by Bill Slavin, by memory using laminated 8x10 illustrations drawn from the children’s book.

“Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!” shouted Bridge, moving her arms in a circular motion to mimic the steam engine’s wheels turning. “Choo, choo, choo, choo!” she said, mimicking the train’s chugging bars.

Bridge enlisted nine students to the front to dramatize the noises and characters in

McCoy’s biography, who were excitedly and loudly applauded by their classmates.

The children’s story tells how McCoy’s dream to study engineering sent him to Scotland. When he returned to the U.S. and sought work at the Michigan Central Railroad, the only job he could get was shoveling coal in to the train’s firebox.

He went on to invent a means to oil the train while it was running, making train travel safer and faster.

“My favourite part was when Elijah showed the boss his invention. He was proud of him. He showed the boss he could do more than the boss thought he could,” said eight-year-old Grade 3 student Tenzin Chosang.

During African Heritage Month, students said they learned about the Underground Railroad and that “black and white are the same. Nobody is different,” said Grade 3 student Victoria Larbie, 8.

School librarian Ann Wosik said Arts Express’ live storytelling highlights the importance of remembering and appreciating history.

“It’s a part of history that still needs to be recognized and honoured as having had occurred so we can learn from history so we don’t repeat it,” she said. “Even kindergarten, kids get the message it doesn’t matter what’s on the outside.

What matters is what’s on the inside.”

City correct to regulate use of chewing tobacco

anning chewing tobacco in public spaces, arenas and sports fields should be a piece of cake. Given Toronto’s history dealing with tobacco regulation, it’s more likely to be a gooey lump of chaw.

Chaw is one of the terms for so-called smokeless tobacco products. Historically popular in the American south and midwest, the product also known as chew, grizzly, skoal and snuff has been spreading in at least visibility thanks to its popularity among professional and semi-professional athletes – in particular, baseball players.

The use of the product is extremely unhealthy. It might not get into the lungs, but it’s just as addictive as cigarettes and pipes and it’s associated with mouth, esophageal and pancreatic cancers, gum disease, and heart disease and stroke.

Its use is on the rise among young people. In it’s used by six per cent our view Ontario, of students in grades 7 to 12, or 58,200 students (that according Survey finds to the 2015 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey). That’s up use on the from 4.6 per cent in 2011.

The rate is lower for Toronto rise in youth students – the increase is just three per cent here. But without a doubt, the power professional athletes exert as role models is an influence, and a bad one in this case, on any young person.

This week, Toronto Board of Health Chair Joe Mihevc announced he’ll be asking the chief medical officer of health to draft a bylaw that would restrict the use of chewing tobacco from city facilities and public venues such as arenas and sports fields – including the Rogers Centre where the Toronto Blue Jays play.

Council ought to approve the bylaw when it comes forward, as a matter of responsible stewardship, just as it has approved ground-breaking bylaws preventing smoking in bars and restaurants and bingo halls.

Critics might argue a bylaw in this case would differ from one restricting cigarette smoking: there is no issue of second-hand smoke affecting the health of non-smokers. This may be so but it doesn’t mean there’s no second-hand influence. And the influence of celebrity athletes, casually gumming a wad of toxins, is demonstrable and needs to be stopped.

Union’s ‘job for life’ being phased out Toronto council won a significant victory in its negotiations with the city’s outside workers – no question.

Forget about the less costly benefit plan and the meagre pay increases that CUPE Local 416 agreed to.

That’s just money.

The big, champagnecork-popping win is on something more fundamental. Now that this contract is signed, it won’t be long before Toronto can shed itself of a significant number of unionized garbage collectors by putting out a tender call, having a couple of meetings and contracting out garbage collection in most and eventually all of the city.

Conservative members of council and former mayors have been hoping to contract out garbage collection since amalgamation, when former Etobicoke mayor and west-end councillor Doug Holyday came extolling the virtues of old Etobicoke’s contracted-out garbage

david nickle the city collection. Etobians were very happy, thank you very much, with their contractor-delivered household garbage collection. The trucks came on time, picked up the garbage, and if there was ever a problem between the drivers and the owners, well that was their problem. Etobicoke was strike proof.

Not so the rest of Toronto.

In North York, Scarborough, East York and York and Toronto, city worker strikes meant that garbage moldered in garages and backyards until it got rank enough to heap in city parks and surface lots. CUPE Local 416, the union representing garbage workers, had real leverage at the bargaining table because of that. Former councillor Jane Pitfield put it most nakedly when in the

run-up to her failed 2006 mayoral campaign, she told reporters that she thought it was time to “phase out” unions.

Toronto’s outside workers have agreed to something like it, after they ratified the provision in the contract that phased out what another former councillor and deputy mayor Case Ootes dubbed “jobs for life.” That was a provision that former mayor Mel Lastman’s administration agreed to, that prevented the city from replacing workers with more than 15 years seniority in the event their position was contracted out.

That provision has been the single barrier to the contracting out of garbage collection citywide. It’s why even uber-conservative mayor Rob Ford could only contract out half the city.

It’s why a strike in warm weather would still be a political nightmare for councillors and mayors who want to get re-elected

in wards east of Yonge Street.

It’s why CUPE Local 416, whose membership is less than a quarter that of the city’s inside workers’ union CUPE Local 79, has real power in a collective bargaining session.

That power hasn’t been removed, but it is, as Pitfield put it, being phased out. In 2019, the final outside worker will cross the line into an inaccurately named “job for life.”

He or she will enjoy another decade or two of job protection. The rest of the city’s workers will serve at the pleasure of Toronto council, and the jobs that they have will be as good as Toronto council deems to be their due.

No doubt about it. In love, war and contract negotiations, to the victors go the spoils.

100 years of Toronto’s transit history on display

T

oronto’s subway system isn’t as massive as Tokyo’s, doesn’t have anywhere near the history of London’s and lacks the iconic nature of New York City’s, but it’s still something worth celebrating.

That’s the chief message of Tunnel Vision: The Story of Toronto’s Subway, a historical exhibit put together by the Toronto Transportation Society (TTS), tracing more than 100 years of planning, designing and building of the city’s subway lines.

“What we want people to see is the subway in Toronto is an important piece of infrastructure,” said exhibit co-curator Robert Lubinski.

Lubinski and TTS colleague Adam Zhelka spent several years putting together the exhibit at Market Gallery, made up of donations from private collectors, the TTC and items from their own personal collections. On display are maps and planning documents and photos tracing the planning and construction of the lines dating well back before Toronto’s first subway line, Yonge, opened up in 1954.

There are also old tickets, tokens and transfers, pieces of subway tile and the first ticket transfer machines. There’s even the front of a decommissioned subway car mounted, which Lubinski picked up before it was scrapped.

The impetus to building the first subway was fuelled by a familiar irritant: congestion. Around 1910, city officials, frus-

trated by private streetcar operator Toronto Railway Company’s refusal to expand outside traditional borders, leading to clogged streets, initially proposed building an underground track for streetcars, which would branch out to new neighbourhoods severely lacking transit. But after objections were raised to the high cost – $23 million dollars – the plan was summarily rejected.

It wasn’t until the 1940s the Toronto Transportation Commission – the city’s first public transit agency formed in 1921 - began to re-consider a rapid transit line. By then, demand for other transportation options had soared, with the rationing of gasoline and the adoption of mass transit during the war

years. It meant record ridership for the TTC, which could hardly keep up with the demand.

Initially the TTC intended to resume its plans to build an underground streetcar route for Yonge Street, by far the city’s busiest street. The plan was to link lines on King Street, Queen Street, Dundas Street and routes back to Yonge. In 1945 the TTC, its coffers flush thanks to the wartime demand, proposed building a heavy rail line under

Yonge while building a corresponding underground streetcar route for Queen.

The plan was put to voters, which this time around voted overwhelmingly to proceed with the project.

Construction on Yonge – the Queen route by then had been cancelled due to a lack of federal funding – began in September 1949. A ceremony was held at Yonge and Wellington Street attended by the Lieutenant Governor.

Construction lasted for five years and thousands of

workers used nothing more than shovels to excavate under Yonge. Not a single person died.

The Yonge line opened up from Eglinton Station to Union Station in March of 1954 with the necessary amount of pomp and circumstance appropriate for the completion of Canada’s first subway line.

The first transit signal was thrown and the first train – built with British steel and painted bright red - made its maiden journey. Posters were prepared proclaiming The Stairway to Tomorrow.

Short films were shot featuring an almost propagandistic verve. There was even a song recorded, appropriately titled the ‘Toronto Subway Song’.

“People were really excited to not have to

ride on the old streetcars dating back to the 1920s,” Lubinski said. “Going from that to a subway train was a huge step.”

From those idealistic times combined with government support, the subway would branch out over the years with the addition of the University loop, the completion of the Bloor Line in the late 1960s and the Spadina line the next decade. In 1980, Kipling and Kennedy Stations opened up in tandem, followed by the Scarborough RT five years later.

Aside from the opening of Downsview Station it wouldn’t be until 2002 – the Eglinton Subway was cancelled in 1995 - when the next subway line, Sheppard, would open.

Lubinski blames a lack of political will for the lack of expansion.

Despite the near 20 years of inaction, Lubinski says the system we have today is something to be proud of, and a symbol of Toronto’s evolution into an important world city.

“Even though people ride it every day, most don’t give a second thought that it’s been around for years,” he said.

“But there’s a lot of history here, and we want to celebrate that.”

Tunnel Vision is on display at the Market Gallery (inside St. Lawrence Market) until June 11.

The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.”

But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly!

It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.”

Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies.

And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.”

“They’re doing so much work to empower women, but one of the things we found they needed a little more support with is around that holistic approach in terms of

acknowledging women’s emotional, spiritual and physical well-being,” James-Sargeant said. “Up until now, a lot of their focus has been on the legal aspect, because domestic violence is finally something that’s against the law now...but the law doesn’t say anything about emotional support for victims.”

After delivering a full-day presentation on Ernestine’s approach to client counselling and supports, case management, safety planning, accommodation (shelter facility), and legal supports to GF2D’s team of paralegals and board members, Amenya said she and James-Sargent were able to sit in on several GF2D victim counselling sessions – and she was pleased to report that they had already begun to incorporate some of Ernestine’s holistic model into their own.

“I was really inspired to see that within the short time we were there, they were able to implement some of those skills,” she said. “It shows how hungry and ready they are to learn. It gives me a sense of hope and it gives me the feeling that, yes, we are moving forward.”

Originally from Ghana herself, Amenya said advocates for domestic abuse victims in Togo – her native country’s immediate neighbour to the east – have taken great strides in recent years to emerge out from under the country’s harsh dictatorship days to a ‘place of empowerment’.

“For them to be able to get to this place where they’re able to come out in the community to talk about domestic violence, I think that shows their zeal. That stood out for me – that no matter where you find yourself, if you have the passion and the zeal, you can make a change,” she said.

“That’s why it’s been one of my passions to go back and impart this knowledge about

domestic violence and how to deal with it in my region of Ghana and West Africa.”

While Amenya and JamesSargeant earned rave reviews from their hosts at GF2D, they said they were likewise blown away by the dedication of the organization’s workers and volunteers to bring about real change for victims of domestic abuse in Togo.

“What I found to be so inspiring was just the passion that these women have and to see how much they’ve been able to do with such limited resources,” James-Sargeant said, noting that many of GF2D’s programs are run by volunteers.

“It was amazing to speak with these women who were doing this work even before there were any laws in place – they are the champions and the warriors whose shoulders we stand on. They are the ones who laid all the foundations and did all the hard work so that we could have the privilege to come in and speak with them.”

Union Pearson Express fare cuts could affect dues-paying taxi drivers Add another barrier to the pressures preventing Toronto cabbies from making a decent wage: the Union Pearson Express.

Representatives from the iTaxi Association, representing dues-paying taxi drivers, said the recent fare cuts to UP, which go into effect next week, will have a disastrous effect on their bottom lines, as more riders rely on public transit rather than a cab to get to the airport.

As an alternative, the group is suggesting the city ease current restrictions prohibiting carpooling, which would at least allow for cabbies to pick up multiple fares on the same ride – something customers of taxi arch-rival Uber currently enjoy.

Etobicoke School of the Arts’ student Max Perone is one of 20 finalists from around the world for the 2016 Saatchi Gallery/Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools. “Repression” is Perone’s exploration “of our neverending struggle to hide our emotions, our inner turmoil, behind a socially acceptable face,” he explained. “What can be put out in the world and what has to be hidden to make a functioning soci-

ety.

“It’s a reflection of why it’s almost mandatory in a way that we do this.”

It is the teen’s largest-scale art piece.

He cast 10 moulds of his face. Then he set the moulds in plaster.

Initially, he made a pair of faces for a class assignment that asked students to create a personal response to the concept of protection.

Then, Perone exploded the project to a massive scale.

“Our teachers always say, ‘that’s amazing. Why don’t you make 100?’” he said. “So I started with my first 100 faces. But they wouldn’t fit the cage I made. So I decided to make two more cages.”

He enlisted the help of his mom, Alix Campbell, to cast moulds at home while he made more at school.

“At peak efficiency, we were able to make about 50 faces a day.”

Jack Perone, his dad, helped him weld the cages.

Perone and his parents

worked on the installation for approximately 200 hours over a two-month period last fall. “Some of the faces were still wet at Portfolio Day.” L a s t N o v e m b e r, 2 0 Etobicoke School of the Arts’ Grade 12 students, including Perone, showcased their photography, paintings, drawings, sculptures and films at the school’s sixth annual Portfolio Day in a bid to attract substantial scholarships from 53 of the world’s top arts colleges and universities.

In 2015, ESA’s fifth annual Portfolio Day secured scholarships in excess of $4 million to 20 students. One student alone captured three full tuition offers, and just over $800,000 in total offers.

At Portfolio Day, Perone received an application from a Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ recruiter.

Embodies ‘risk-taking’ Varey isn’t surprised.

Perone “embodies the sort

of risk-taking and responsibility for his artistic understanding and output” that has helped Etobicoke School of the Arts’ visual art find its place on the world stage, Varey said.

Perone’s finalist status (he’s one of 20) in the Saatchi contest “indicates how truly successful Max has been in translating sophisticated thinking into large-scale and fully realized sculptural installations,” Varey added.

Perone flew to London on Tuesday with his parents.

T h e Sa a t c h i c o n t e s t chooses one primary school winner, aged four to 11, and one secondary school winner aged 11 to 18. Each student wins £1,000, and £5,000 for their school’s art department.

The overall winner chosen from both age categories receives £2,000 and £10,000 for their school’s art department.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony tonight.

JoAnne’s personal care and tenacity earned her the honour of the National Chairman’s Club for the top 1 per cent in Canada from 2007 to 2015. Her success is also measured in a number of client referrals.

Clients who have stayed in touch over the years are not only referring JoAnne to their children, they are

The time and emotions involved in downsizing is something JoAnne is familiar with, having helped her mother through the process in the past, and chronicling it through a regular column.

Furniture Bank needs drivers, movers to help refugees Etobicoke-based Furniture Bank urgently needs drivers and movers to pick up and to deliver furniture to hundreds of Syrian refugees moving into their permanent homes in the Greater Toronto Area.

Last November, the charity gained a referral agency in Lifeline Syria, a Toronto-based organization that recruits, trains and assists sponsor groups to support Syrian refugees through the process to become permanent immigrants.

Furniture Bank put out a call for help Monday morning.

“This is causing a huge bottleneck in our ability to serve all our clients,” executive director Dan Kershaw said in a news release.

“Our furniture pickup and delivery service is the backbone of our

charity – without drivers and movers, we aren’t able to get furniture from the community to those in need.”

There are more than 100 social service agencies currently on Furniture Bank’s wait list and a backlog of 1,000 clients waiting for an appointment, Kershaw said.

Furniture Bank picks up gently used furniture from homes and businesses and gives them freeof-charge to people who escaped homelessness or abusive situations, newcomer families and refugees.

The men are hosting March 4 to 6 at Humber’s Rexdale campus while the women are at Niagara College March 3 to 5. They are the only Toronto college teams involved.

The Hawks women’s team are the defending OCAA champs, were the only undefeated women’s team at 18-0 in the regular season and are ranked second nationally.

Their quarter-final opener is today at 1 p.m. against St. Clair College.

The host Hawks men’s team, meanwhile, had a more modest 13-5 regular season to finish third in its west division. They are, however, the defending national champions and provincial silver medalists.

Their quarter-final opener is tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Kingston’s St. Lawrence College (13-7).
