Donors come to aid Furniture Bank Online donation drive aims to replace stolen catalytic converters

The ongoing search for a grocery tenant remained a hot topic at a recent city-hosted community consultation on the proposed redevelopment of Stonegate Plaza.

Hosted at St. Mark’s Catholic School, the meeting drew more than 100 local residents – many of whom expressed concern at the fact that Vandyk Group of Companies’ has thus far been unable to secure a major grocer to take up tenancy in the developer’s proposed commercial building.

“Our goal right now is to focus on the grocery side,” said Domenic Zita, president of Vandyk Commercial, at the meeting last Wednesday evening.

“I manage the retail side of our business and I’ve met with seven different grocers. We’ve gone from the largest ones to the smallest ones: Sobeys actually put in a letter of intent to lease the premises...and we went through the same process >>>multiple, page 12

Markland Wood Asian grocer nearly $187K in rent arrears TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com An Asian grocery store in Markland Wood closed for eight months poses no health or licensing concerns, the city said.

But it poses a significant concern to its landlord, Jeli Holdings Inc., which posted a landlord distress warrant on Yi Xing Supermarket’s doors in January citing rent arrears owing of nearly $187,000.

A bailiff’s notice indicated any attempt by the grocer to remove the seized goods is “unlawful and a violation of the Criminal Code.”

The grocery store posted a handwritten note on its doors last summer reporting a break-in June 29 and subsequent closure “for a short period of time.”

The grocer has not reopened. The phone number listed for Yi Xing Supermarket has been disconnected.

Industry Canada lists four directors for the numbered company 8120587 Canada Inc.: Jinying Pei, Wen Hui Lin, Shixiang Xu and Deng Biao Lin. No phone numbers could be sourced for any of the company’s directors, or for its company-listed address, a bungalow in Scarborough.

Calls for comment to a number listed for Jeli Holdings Inc., the cell number of Philip Abramson, were not returned prior to Guardian deadline.

Abramson’s LinkedIn profile indicates he is Jeli Holding’s past president.

Last summer, area resident Allan Howe contacted theninterim Ward 3 Councillor Peter Leon’s office expressing

concerns vermin could be attracted by food left behind in the seemingly abandoned grocery store.

Howe said Leon asked inspectors to go into the store.

More recently, Howe contacted Holyday, the area’s newly elected councillor, for an update.

“I learned it was inspected recently be MLS and the health department and they gave it a pass,” Howe said.

Antarctic expedition gives teen a ‘powerful perspective’ on the world

Robert, 16, was one of 66 high school and university students from around the world, three from Toronto, to participate in the Dec. 26 to Jan. 8 Students on Ice Antarctic expedition.

The award-winning organization connected students with 23 scientists, educators, artists, musicians, CEOs, polar experts and innovators in its 15th annual journey to the bottom of the world.

Robert sat among hundreds of thousands of “squawking� chinstrap penguins and observed dozens of whales, hundreds of seals and thousands of seabirds.

The Bishop Allen Academy Advanced Placement student realized his dream of taking a selfie with a penguin when, after patiently waiting, one pecked his boot. “It was so majestic, so utterly beautiful,� Robert said, as he clicked through expedition photographs on his laptop. “The amazing awe and beauty I witnessed gave me powerful perspective on protecting this for future generations. “It changed my whole outlook on life. I came out with a new appreciation of the things in this world bigger than us; with a new respect for the delicacy of the planet. I don’t want to be complacent anymore.�

Whalers Bay on Deception Island spoke a dire warning to Robert of how the past can predict the future.

Designated a historic site, Whalers Bay comprises the pre-1970 shore remains, including artefacts and

structural remains from the early whaling period of 1906 to 1912, and the 1944 to 1969 period of British scientific and mapping activity. “We walked along all the hangars where they had processed whale oil,� Robert recalled. “It was an ominous warning of exploitation and greed. I thought, ‘this cannot happen again. I need to talk about this omen and try to prevent what I saw from ever happening again.’�

Robert will share his expedition experience at Voices That Challenge, a Toronto Catholic school board youth leadership conference on

March 10 at St. Michael’s College.

He has written prolifically about his expedition adventurers on his blog, which his father eagerly read each day. “I’d wake up in the morning to see if the blogs came in. Especially his first blog, you could tell he was in awe. As parents, we’re very proud of him,� Robert Adragna senior said of he and his wife, Nadia, seated at the kitchen table of his home in the Eglinton and Islington avenues area.

Robert aspires to attend the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is working on a children’s book about a genetics lab, and is considering penning another about his expedition. He is on the youth editorial advisory group of Young Voices, Toronto Public Library’s magazine of teen writing and visual art.

Mark Tuohy, Robert’s Bishop Allen Academy guidance counsellor, commended him for seizing the rare educational opportunity. “It’s so important that young people plug into these experiences.

I’ve proud of him that he has done that,� Tuohy said. “He seems passionate to learn.

Melting ice caps, the plight of penguins, he saw it first-hand.

I’m pleased he took advantage of an opportunity like this. More should.�

Still waiting for benefit of Tory’s magic Rolodex to materialize O

ne of the most resonant of the points hammered at by 2014 mayoral candidate John Tory was his belief that Toronto could not solve its very significant problems on its own. The federal and provincial government would need to “come to the table” and pay a significant share of the cost of public housing, public transportation and infrastructure improvement.

It was hard to argue with that premise – the property tax base is a lousy way to finance a city as big as a middle-sized province – and also hard to be too skeptical of Tory’s boasts, that he above all other candidates had the capacity to draw reluctant premiers and prime ministers to that table. Tory has fostered a great deal of non-partisan

goodwill, after all – particularly compared to his predecessor the congenitally partisan Rob Ford.

One can’t say whether anyone else would have done much better. But Tory’s relationships so far have borne little fruit.

Indeed, every time Toronto goes to the table with the province it seems like Toronto gets saddled with the check.

Like previous examples – the $86 million in housing pooling, the $75 million in LRT sunk costs – the latest imposition emerged during the 2015 budget process.

It turns out that Toronto taxpayers owe nearly $100 million to Metrolinx for the Union Pearson Express rail

project that Toronto property taxpayers understood themselves to have nothing to do with.

It turns out that wasn’t the case, at all. When Metrolinx builds a rail line through a municipality and has to make upgrades and changes to municipal infrastructure, the cost of that work falls on the municipality. And there was a lot of infrastructure rejigging that needed to be done to get that rail line — a rail line that’s pretty much exclusively for the use of air travellers staying in or near downtown Toronto, and priced at $30 a ticket.

A rail line that, in other words, doesn’t really provide that much benefit to commuters who live and travel within Toronto.

Now, this charge didn’t magically appear as Mayor Tory took office; city staff

have known for years there would be a reckoning.

In the same way, it was the Ford-era council that decided to change directions on the Scarborough subway and toss away $75 million in sunk costs, and it was Rob Ford whose bluster failed to convince the province to stick to its original schedule on the housing pooling fund.

But by the same token, the magic Rolodex Tory promised to bring to the mayor’s office hasn’t been nearly as effective as originally advertised – at least when it comes to swaying the provincial government to take provincial action on matters important to the city.

ALL SAINTS’ KINGSWAY ANGLICAN CHURCH’S Out of the Cold program has seen a moderate increase in Friday overnight guests as the city issued extreme cold weather alerts 75 per cent of those dates in January and February.

Robert Cirillo has volunteered for seven years with the program that provides dinner with live piano playing Friday nights to an average 100 to 110 men and women, and sleeps as many as 24 men overnight during extreme cold.

Overnight guests watch a movie or work on their art, which is sold at the church’s annual Easter Art Sale. All proceeds go to the artists.

Men who stay overnight may access a shower, laundry facilities and a nurse, and receive a hot breakfast and bagged lunch the next day.

All guests receive a new T-shirt, underwear and socks and a TTC token.

All Saints’ Out of the Cold program is funded by its popular annual Carolling in the Kingsway Out of the Cold Concert.

Cirillo was one of the program’s intake workers for years before he recently began managing Friday night duties for the program’s co-ordinator, Ralph Walton.

How did you come to volunteer with the program?

I volunteered with the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) with my church. The coordinator of the Out of the Cold program at the time came to speak with us about it. I thought, ‘Wow. It seems pretty interesting.’ It has been a great experience. I’ve met great friends, both volunteers, as well as the great people who are regular clients and overnight guests.

How has this winter’s extreme cold affected the program’s guests?

What do guests say about city or social service resources for the homeless?

Overnight guests speak so much about how there is so much money, but nobody cares about affordable housing and the homeless. Even guests who come for a meal and have a place to stay who may be on assistance or a government program share the same sentiment. Affordable housing is difficult to come by.

What would you say to people who may consider volunteering to know about the program?

It’s a very friendly, safe environment. We’re always hearing the negative about homeless people – they’re violent, alcoholic or drug addicts. We have never, ever had a physical altercation in the time I’ve been here. Come in and see it to get a feel for it. It’s very rewarding. Volunteers build friendships with guests you can see evolve over years. It means so much to the guests and the volunteers.

We have had more demand. When it’s extremely, extremely cold, some people don’t come out for dinner. But those who stay overnight tends to increase.

How important is an item like clean, dry socks to guests since homeless people tend to walk all day long waiting to access a shelter or Out of the Cold program at night?

Men who stay overnight tend to see the nurse before they even sit down to eat. It’s just awful to see the blisters on their feet.

I don’t know how they walk. It doesn’t even look like human flesh.

What feedback do guests give about All Saints’ Out of the Cold program?

Especially the guests who come for dinner, the couples, tell us it’s very friendly; both the volunteers and the atmosphere. There is a piano playing.

Otherwise, it’s quiet. It’s quieter than the downtown programs. They love to watch a movie or work at the art table. When I first saw some of the art, I was blown away by it.

Dozens of residents jump into new action group Grassroots group Our Place Initiative hopes to engage residents to make changes in Etobicoke CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com “Start small.”

That was the advice offered by 2014 Jane Jacobs Prize winner Sabina Ali to the 50-odd members of the newly formed Our Place Initiative (OPI) Community Action Group at its inaugural meeting last Thursday night.

“I would definitely say think small, because how did we start? We started very little, very small,” said Ali, whose highly successful Thorncliffe Park Women’s Committee has grown leaps and bounds in the six years since it first started up with the modest goal of securing garbage containers for R.V. Burgess Park.

“Also, always look for people who have the same passion towards the community as you.

I think those are the keys.”

“We had some conversation about complete streets and the idea of getting people to their destinations using not just cars, but other alternatives,” said longtime south Etobicoke community advocate Amber Morley, as she presented the results of her group’s brainstorming session.

Vandyk bought Stonegate’s 55-year-old Berry Road plaza back in August 2013, and in mid-January of this year submitted a rezoning application to Etobicoke York Community Council calling for a phased, mixed-use development on the 5.3-acre site.

If ultimately approved, the first phase of the proposed redevelopment will consist of a two-storey commercial building containing retail uses at ground level and a relocated Stonegate Community Health Centre on the second storey.

Phase 2 would then follow with the construction of three mid-rise condominium buildings (one 10-storey and two six-storey buildings); a threestorey, 16-unit townhouse block; a new public road; publicly accessible open space; and 670 parking spaces.

When questioned at the Feb. 25 meeting on the “time sensitivity” of the search for a grocery tenant to fill the ground floor of the firstphase commercial building, Mark DeSouza, Vandyk’s VP of Land Development, said the developer would likely

Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Justin DiCiano said that idea of dividing up the ground floor of the commercial building to allow for multiple retail uses rather than it being occupied solely by a grocery store, is one that is appealing to him.

“The old Stonegate Plaza had a lot of services, so my concern with the fact that (Vandyk) was going towards just one large supermarket was: Where are my nighttime services? Where are those services other than food?

Because everyone needs food, yes, but everyone needs banking, a post office, and a variety store, too,” he said.

“I think it’s becoming clear that there will be some difficulty finding a large grocer, so we talked with Vandyk to say we’re happy to see three or four small stores there – like a bakery shop, a butcher shop, a little food market...”

Dan Kershaw, Furniture Bank executive director, said the catalytic converters’ replacement will cost the organization an estimated $20,000 above insurance coverage.

Furniture Bank set up a one-week, $20,000 fundraising campaign on www.canadahelps.org for donations.

As of Tuesday, $11,500 had been raised.

“I told my staff today, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. We’re

making lemonade today,” Kershaw said in an interview.

It is the third time in as many years thieves have stolen catalytic converters from Furniture Bank trucks, Kershaw said.

Kershaw said he has spoken with many trucking companies officials who report routine thefts of catalytic converters from their vehicles.

“One company had the catalytic converters stolen from 20 to 30 of their trucks.

Then they stole a truck to take the catalytic converters out,” he said.

“We’re just a very public face on a regular problem.”

On Monday, 24 families awaiting receipt of Furniture Bank furniture were affected by the thefts, Kershaw said.

Last year, Furniture Bank provided donated furniture to nearly 5,500 clients.

More than 130 Ontario communities will host the Pan Am flame.

The torch relay starts when the Pan Am flame is lit in Teotihuacan, Mexico. It ends on July 10 with the lighting of the cauldron during the Pan Am Games Opening Ceremony downtown on July 10.

or many Toronto families, the countdown to March Break fun in the sun has already begun – but before packing up those swimsuits and sunglasses, the Children’s Health and Safety Association (CH&SA) is urging parents to keep safety top of mind.

“It is vitally important that parents traveling with young children take the necessary steps to ensure their destination is as safe and secure as it is fun and relaxing,” Veronika Bradley, editor for Etobicoke-based safety organization, wrote in an online travel safety article at www. safekid.org “Research your family travel destination thoroughly before you leave. Consider health risks such as drinking water, infectious diseases and safety concerns to avoid unnecessary risks.”

Ontario Junior Citizen nominee says Council vote could designate volunteering is part of her every day 1939 Mary Reid House CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke’s Julia Swist, 16, is a nominee for this year’s Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award.

The Grade 11 Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School student was nominated by her former science teacher, Paul Daniele, who praised Swist as a “highly committed individual who uses all of her gifts and talents to make a difference in the world.”

“Julia actively volunteers in many different groups and organizations, knowing that what she does will, in fact, change the lives of others,” Daniele wrote in Swist’s nomination application.

“She is always ready to offer a helping hand with a positive attitude and a smile on her face, ready to face all challenges that stand in her way. With her hard work and determination, Julia tries her best in whatever she does, and not only rises to the challenge, but exceeds all expectations.”

For Swist, volunteerism became part of her everyday life early on, when she volunteered to take on the role of altar server at St. Clement’s

Catholic Church.

“That kind of got me into volunteering, because I had a lot of fun and made a lot of friends. Now, I even train other people,” she said, noting that she also volunteers at St. Clement’s Bible Camp in the summer.

At Loretto Abbey, Swist often volunteers to act as a school ambassador during Grade 8 nights; and last year she took up a volunteer position at Copernicus Lodge long-term care home, where she spends time with elderly residents and porters them around.

During her summer holidays, Swist can often be found volunteering with children’s programming at the Royal Ontario Museum and last summer began volunteering in the St. Michael’s Hospital gift shop.

She’s already has accrued more than 300 hours of volunteer time.

As for her future career aspirations, Swist said she’s leaning towards something in the health field.

“I just really want to get into something where I can help others,” she said.

Etobicoke York Community Council recently endorsed city planners’ recommendations that council state its intention to designate the 4200 Eglinton Ave. W. property under the Ontario Heritage Act. The property’s “cultural heritage value” meets criteria for municipal heritage designation, a January city planning report stated. “(It) is a well-crafted country house designed in the Period Revival style that is historically and visually linked to its surroundings and reflects the historical character of the area adjoining the northwest corner of Eglinton and Royal York Road,” the report indicated.

Mary Reid House is a 2.5-storey house with a mix of elements drawn from English medieval architecture.

It is distinguished by its asymmetrical plan and application of corbelled brickwork and clinker bricks.

When a city-owned heritage property is transferred to private ownership, the city will designate the property and secure a heritage easement agreement with the property owner.

That agreement is registered on title. The agreement ensures a heritage building’s preservation. It identifies elements of a building to be retained in perpetuity, and may set out permitted alterations and development, the city stated.

Film featuring ESA show choir wins Canadian Screen Award

Following the success of last year’s musical cabaret revue Spring into Song, Etobicoke Musical Productions (EMP) has created a new cabaret, Winter’s on the Wing, A Musical Celebration Featuring Theatre’s Best Songs.

Winter’s on the Wing had its premiere last weekend, and was well-received and enjoyed, said the director of the show, Allison Beula.

It seems the musical cabaret is fast becoming a favourite genre for EMP audiences.

The show contains about 40 songs from Broadway shows chosen and compiled by Beula and music director, Mark Peterson. She said they chose them based on what suited the cast and also what they thought audiences would enjoy.

“We tried to chose based on 50-50 approach, so 50 per cent from shows people would really will recognize and get excited about, and then we also have some more obscure and more contemporary material for those hardcore Broadway fans, but that we felt was still accessible

A TVO documentary featuring two Toronto arts schools that go headto-head in a show choir sing-off recently won a Canadian Screen Award.

Unsung: Behind the Glee was written, directed and produced by award-winning filmmakers Moze Mossanen and Jeff Spriet. The film won in the Best Biography or Arts Documentary or Series category.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television presented the award on Feb. 24 at the Sheraton Centre on Queen Street West.

The documentary provides a look into the competitive nature of show choirs as it follows the stories of two high school teams competing for the annual Show Choir Canada National Championship: “Splash” of the Etobicoke School of the Arts and the “Wexford Gleeks” of the Wexford Collegiate School of the Arts.

The newcomers have a whole new level of integrity and importance after the premiere of the awardwinning documentary, said Paul Aikins, artistic director of Splash.

“It is pretty overwhelming just to

think back to two years ago when we were shooting the documentary – we had no idea how successful it would become,” he said.

The cameras followed the students around in 2013 as they were preparing for the nationals.

“They captured us being really real,” Aikins told The Guardian.

Popular television series like Glee, only show the glory and the fame of show choir, but not the sweat and the tears, Aikins added.

Although, Aikins recalled a time during the filming process where he may have been a little too real.

“I was really ripping into some of my students for showing up late to a practice and not having their costumes,” he said.

“I’m sure the producers loved that there was some drama, but I had to watch myself – it did feel weird at times to have the cameras there.”

Aikins and the choir are headed to New York City on Thursday, March 5 to take place in the Fame show choir competition.

From old Gershwin songs such as ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ and ‘But Not for Me,’ to newer songs like ‘In Summer’ from Disney’s Frozen, and a duet called ‘Me’ from Beauty and the Beast, there really is something for everyone’s tastes.

Beula said during opening weekend numbers such as ‘Summer Nights’ from Grease, ‘Razzle Dazzle’ from Chicago, ‘Cabaret’ from Cabaret, and the closing number, ‘Wheels of a Dream’ from Ragtime‘ seemed to be the crowd favourites.

Fourth new streetcar enters service The newest of the new streetcars had its first official trip earlier this week Car 4405 officially entered service Monday, March 2 on the 510 Spadina line.

It’s the fourth of the new fleet under manufacture by Bombardier.

A study undertaken by the group Bike to Transit shows a marked increase in the number of people choosing two wheels over four to get to work.

weekend the Etobicoke resident led the Hawks to its record-breaking eighth consecutive Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial championship. After the event she was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Prior to the championship tournament she was named a First Team All Star, OCAA Player of the Year and CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association) All Canadian.

This season Thalia won the OCAA scoring title with a mark of 4.4 points per set. She also led the league in kill percentage and placed fourth in the nation.

In the classroom she has excelled, as well, earning her third consecutive OCAA Academic All Star and CCAA National Academic All Canadian awards.

Field hockey schedule released

The detailed field hockey schedule for the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games has been released.

The games will be played at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus.

The Canadian women’s team plays preliminary round matches on Monday, July 13, against the Dominican Republic, Wednesday, July 15, against Argentina and Friday, July 17 against Mexico. All games are at 7 p.m.

The women’s quarterfinals start on

Monday, July 20, with the semifinals on Wednesday, July 22 and the finals on Friday, July 24.

In men’s preliminary action, Canada takes on Brazil on Tuesday, July 14, Chile on Thursday, July 16, and Mexico on Saturday, July 18. All games start at 7 p.m.
