The bus picks up families at various locations in the Greater Toronto Area and it cost adults about $35 each

to cover the price of gas for a return trip. Kids are free.

“The fathers and the families really look forward to these visits,” Derek said.

“These visits keep them going and they look forward to being released.”

He said the program, which is linked to LAMP Community Health Centre, is the only one

of its kind in Canada to provide such a bus service.

Jessica and Derek launched the program because of their own experience of being separated. The two didn’t know one another until Jessica was grown up. They launched FEAT to help other families avoid the pain of separation.

Toronto mom Chrisyana takes the bus every two weeks with her two children to visit husband, Bernard, who is completing a five-year term at Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst.

“I don’t drive and this is the only way we can get to visit him,” Chrisyana said.

“The visits are good for the kids and it helps him to cope better in there.”

Etobicoke’s Rosa has been riding the bus with Amelia, 1, to visit her future husband, who is completing a nine-year term at Bath.

“My daughter gets to see her dad and he gets to hold her and feed her,” Rosa said.

“These visits help keep our family together as one.”

Etobicoke’s Debbie said she was traumatized for not being able to visit her father while he was serving a 10-year prison term.

“I never saw my father during my most important years and I still feel the pain today,” Debbie recalled.

The women asked that their last names not be published to protect the identities of their children.

provincial election campaign comes and goes quickly. It will all be over on election day June 12.

We thought we’d give you an idea of the preelection campaign coverage you can expect from The Etobicoke Guardian.

First, while we believe in democracy – and that political parties are necessary in a parliamentary democracy – we will always encourage candidates to represent their constituents first and their party second. With major questions such as economic issues and of course the transit puzzle, we’d like to see how courageous candidates are in accepting or denouncing a specific party’s platform if necessary to reflect the expressed view of constituents within a riding.

Time to change the rules for city councillors seeking higher office G ood on Adam Vaughan for packing up his office.

The former journalist and now former city councillor up and quit this past week, after the writ dropped on the federal byelection in Trinity-Spadina. Vaughan will be running for the federal Liberals, to try and take the riding from the New Democratic Party following Olivia Chow’s departure, to run for mayor.

Leaving aside whether Vaughan is the best person to go to Ottawa for the riding of Trinity-Spadina, his decision regarding his seat at city hall has made for one of the best departures from city hall in recent memory.

Unlike representatives at other levels of government, Toronto councillors and mayors are under no obligation to vacate their seats when they choose to run, mid-term, for MP or MPP.

They can even, during the campaign period, continue to collect their full pay. If they lose, their old job is waiting for them.

Councillor-candidates don’t have a great record on resisting those perks.

Raymond Cho, just now serving the residents of Scarborough-Rouge River while running for the provincial Progressive Conservatives, says he’ll be donating his councillor salary to charity for the length of the campaign, but is still collecting it. Doug Holyday, the city’s former deputy mayor, did forgo his salary when he ran in last summer’s EtobicokeLakeshore byelection for the Progressive Conservatives, but he didn’t stop being a councillor until he won.

The question that Vaughan’s decision raises again, is: should the rules be changed?

Peter Milczyn came back to Toronto council after having lost against Holyday, and is now getting ready to run again for the Liberals there.

We could go on: Olivia Chow, Brad Duguid, Judy Sgro, Michael Prue, Bas Balkissoon, Jack Layton... they all took advantage of a system that allows ambitious politicians to maintain both their base and safety net as they make the jump to federal and provincial politics.

You can’t blame them for doing so, given how the rules are. The question that Vaughan’s decision raises,

again, is: should the rules be changed?

Federal and provincial representatives seem to get by fine with more severe restrictions on their ambitions.

When Olivia Chow decided to run for Mayor of Toronto, she quit her job in Ottawa, as did Jim Karygiannis, when he decided to run for a seat on council in ScarboroughAgincourt. Legislation forced them to genuinely commit to seeking the new office, in a way that Toronto councillors need not.

That is something that we should expect from any politician with ambitions.

Because really, an honest decision to move up cannot come without an honest decision to move on.

Judging horses at the Claireville Agricultural Fair in 1933 in the village of Claireville in the northwest corner of Etobicoke.

In its prime, Claireville was an agricultural centre F or many of us, the advent of autumn means it’s agricultural fair season – a tradition as old as recorded history. Once up to 500 fairs were held annually in this province, and over 200 still take place today. This glimpse into rural life, with livestock, crops, ploughs, and baking competitions, help reassure us that some semblance of our historic agricultural past still exists.

The village of Claireville is in the very northwest corner of Etobicoke. Its founder was Jean du Petitpoint de la Haye, French Master at Upper Canada College, who filed a plan for a village along Albion Road in 1851, naming it after his daughter, Claire. The village was a service centre for the surrounding agricultural area and its citizens held their first agricultural fair in 1865.

In this photo, we’re looking northeast across Indian Line where you can see a row of parked cars.

The buildings are all on the south side of Albion Road.

The white building at the far left is the town’s general store, built around 1840

and the location of the first post office in 1842. The other buildings are residences, some with small barns behind.

Front and centre in the photo is a 1931 Packard, owned by William Perkins Bull who is at the rear of the car with white hair and beard. Bull was a wealthy lawyer, financier, philanthropist and ardent historian who wrote 13 books on the history of Toronto, Peel, and other parts of Ontario. His wife Marie is seated in the car’s back seat, and his son, William Perkins Bull Jr., is in the driver’s seat.

The Claireville fair was held every year until 1959.

By then, the village’s role as an agricultural centre was diminishing as farms were being replaced with industry and subdivisions.

changed to bypass the village on the south, and the name of the village’s main street was changed from Albion Road to Codlin Crescent. Only 14 former residences remain on what was once the main street of Claireville. A few are empty and the rest have been repurposed as businesses for truck storage, truck driver training, a welding school, and religious purposes. Like a ghost town, Claireville today bears only a shadowy resemblance to its former agricultural roots.

Etobicoke-Queensway Lions Club sponsors children to visit Camp Nokomis at Bellaleo CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Launched by the EtobicokeQueensway Lions Club way back in 1957, the camp now known as Camp Nokomis at Bellaleo has long served as a fresh breath of summertime air for south Etobicoke kids in need of a nature escape.

While oversight of the sleep-over camp has changed hands – and names – between local Lions Clubs in recent years, its mandate has remained constant throughout its 57-year history, said longtime camp director Jay Haddad.

“It’s always been the Lions Club mandate that no child should be precluded from a summer camp experience due to an inability to afford the registration fee – and the fee is $1,250 for two weeks, which is steep for a lot of single mothers,” said Haddad, an Etobicoke-Queensway Lions Club member who, along with his wife Vicki, has served as Camp Nokomis’ co-director for the last 22 years.

“Eighty per cent of the kids who come to our camp each year are sponsored, either fully or in part. To be able to do that, we draw on the support of our members and other Lions Clubs, as well as corporate sponsorships, and through the big fundraiser we do every year, the Spring for Nokomis.”

This year’s 16th Annual Etobicoke-Queensway Lions Club Spring for Nokomis fundraiser is set to take place on Friday, May 23 from 6 p.m. to midnight at Le Treport Banquet Hall, at 1075 The Queensway E. in Mississauga. Tickets are $60 each and include an antipasto bar, dinner, dancing and live entertainment by Anthony Terpstra and the Starlight Orchestra.

more than 200 attendees each year, also features a raffle, door prizes and a silent auction, at which attendees are invited to bid on an exciting list of items ranging from a suite at the Air Canada Centre, to Blue Jays In-The-Action seat tickets, to autographed sports jerseys, a lawn mower, a barbecue and many other prizes, said event co-ordinator Sarina Bowen. supporters of all kinds “What we’ve found is that once people come to Spring for Nokomis the first time, they come every year after that – and it’s not all Lions members that come, either.

It’s a lot of friends and people who have found out about it through word-of-mouth, too,” Bowen said of the popular fundraising event, which regularly raises $40,000 towards Camp Nokomis sponsorships for kids in need.

“This year, we’re hoping to raise even more, because we have a lot more sponsorship requests.”

In fact, Haddad said a full slate of 200 kids – 100 boys over the course of July and 100 girls in August – aged seven to 16 are already signed up to pack their bags and board the bus to Camp Nokomis, nestled on the banks of Belwood Lake just outside Fergus, this summer. camp traditions There, he said, they will get the opportunity to take part in all the usual summer camp traditions in the great outdoors – canoeing, kayaking, arts and crafts, fishing, cookouts, nature walks, archery, swimming, beach volleyball, creative games, soccer, baseball, basketball, campfire activities, and even a little stargazing.

“It’s a 20-acre camp, and for

the kids from Toronto – especially south Etobicoke – it’s a whole world away, because once you get away from the city, you can actually see the stars every night,” Haddad said. “We have binoculars and telescopes and we look at the constellations, and it’s just fun for the kids. It’s a wonderful place for the kids to grow in the out of doors.”

A staff of about 30 – including camp counsellors, kitchen staff, a nurse, life guards, directors and a full roster of leaders-in-training handpicked from amongst former campers – oversees the campers in all activities, not only to ensure their safety and security, but also “to allow each child to grow emotionally, socially and spiritually in a caring and supportive environment,” as per the Camp Nokomis philosophy.

“Being at summer camp, spending your days on a canoe out on the lake, is a profound experience,” Haddad said, noting the emotional responses elicited from his campers over the years.

“You can’t really explain it, it’s just something that happens in you – you grow, you’re a better person, and it’s in your heart.

“It helps kids become more resilient, because they have to survive up there in a cabin with other kids who are all different, and because of that they become stronger and more tolerant and more giving and more understanding. So, at the end of it all, it really is profound. The kids come home changed.”

Falling nuts, allergens condemn Etobicoke trees

Parents cite health, safety of their children as reasons to remove walnut, honey locust trees CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com West-end councillors voted Tuesday to allow two healthy and mature trees in Etobicoke to be cut down due to health and safety concerns raised by their respective property owners.

In two split votes, the majority of Etobicoke York Community Council (EYCC) sided with the applicants’ requests to take down the healthy trees – one, a black walnut at 24 Highgate Rd. in Ward 5, the other a honey locust at 33 Princess Margaret Blvd. in Ward 4 – against recommendations by the city’s Urban Forestry department to reject their removal applications.

Highgate homeowner Andrew Darbyshire told councillors at Tuesday’s meeting that falling fruit from the twin-stemmed black walnut in their backyard causes he and his wife “grave concerns” about the welfare of their two young daughters, aged three and eight months.

“The walnuts hit the ground at an alarming rate of speed. It’s terrifying.

while I was out there doing the lawn,” he said, noting that the walnut fruit is ‘larger than a golf ball’ and encased in a hard, green husk.

“To me, it comes down to one final question, and that is: are we really truly prepared as a city and as a society to put the welfare of a tree ahead of the welfare of children?”

Despite his plea, Darbyshire’s local councillor, Etobicoke-Lakeshore’s Peter Milczyn, opted not to support his application to remove the tree – citing the recent loss of ‘an extraordinary number’ of trees in that community due to ice storm damage, and his belief that the tree in question doesn’t pose any real danger.

“There is a great deal of concern in the community about loss of tree canopy in that area, and though I’m sympathetic to the concerns Mr. Darbyshire...I don’t believe this tree is a hazard to life,” he said.

The majority of Milczyn’s fellow councillors, however, disagreed – including Ward 6’s Mark Grimes.

Noting the havoc that the walnut tree in his own backyard has caused, Grimes instead supported a motion put forth by York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti granting the Darbyshires’ request for removal of the tree on the condition that they provide at least five trees as replacement.

“I have one of those babies in my backyard, so I’ll be supporting removal,” he said. “It was a nice tree,

then all of a sudden it matured and it started dropping those bombs to the point where you couldn’t sit on the back deck...there were nuts coming down like rain.”

Over on Princess Margaret Boulevard, meanwhile, Jasmine Akbarali said the healthy honey locust tree in her backyard will only continue to cause her eight-year-old son “severe” allergic reactions if not removed.

“Among his more worrying symptoms is difficulty breathing. He’s not usually on puffers, but during this time of year, he is on puffers regularly and he suffers regular allergy symptoms, as well,” she told councillors at Tuesday’s EYCC, providing them with doctors’ notes to support her claims.

“We have him on allergy drops and he’s on over-the-counter allergy medication, but all these do is make his symptoms a little less bad – he’s still miserable.”

As an allergy sufferer who carries an Epipen herself, Etobicoke Centre Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby – the Akbarali’s local councillors – said she

has “a lot of empathy” for the family, however, she couldn’t support the removal of the tree.

“I thought about this a lot and I recognize that, as a mother, I would be doing the same thing, however, I think if we were to allow this (allergy defence), it would end up being a defence that people would use all the time (in tree removal applications).

They’d just say ‘oh, I’m sick because of this tree,’” she said.

But as with the Highgate Road tree removal application, Lindsay Luby’s attempt to save the tree was thwarted by a fellow councillor’s competing motion to have it removed – in this case, that of Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford.

Ford moved that EYCC permit the tree’s removal on condition that the homeowner provide three replacement trees.

With both tree removal applications given the green light at EYCC, both will now proceed to Toronto City Council next month.

‘I couldn’t get my own government to listen to me’ >>>from page 1 Recently, The Toronto Star and The Etobicoke Guardian published a series of articles examining antipsychotic use among Ontario long-term care residents.

But Cansfield has been on the file for years.

Cansfield’s private member’s bill, with the support of Progressive Conservative deputy leader Christine Elliot, sought innovative ways to manage the care of people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Last year, it received Queen’s Park opposition parties’ support. It passed second reading, where it will now die because of the June 12 Ontario election.

Her bill stalled in the legislature, Cansfield sent a letter in January to each of her 106 Ontario MPP colleagues accompanied by Ministry of Health statistics for antipsychotic use in long-term care homes in each MPP’s riding. In the letter, Cansfield requested MPPs’ support in

asking the Ontario government for a review of antipsychotic use among residents with Alzheimer’s and other dementias living in Ontario long-term care homes.

Then she waited and waited.

Cansfield said she got no letter from Health Minister Deb Matthews, although she did receive one from federal Health Minister Rona Ambrose.

Then the Star article published in April.

“I was thrilled. I am so pleased. Nobody listened to me. I couldn’t get my own government to listen to me,” Cansfield said.

Shining a light on the antipsychotic issue seems to have made an impact.

In recent months, the use of antipsychotics in Ontario long-term care homes, including in some in Etobicoke, has fallen.

sychotic use has fallen from 31.6 in 2012 to 20.9 per cent in the first half of 2013.

“One of the most difficult, heart-wrenching decisions an individual has to make is to put someone they care for in a long-term care home.

We publish constraint use, investigations, publish these

homes online, but we do not publish their drug use. They do in the U.S. You get an exact picture of that long-term care home. If they can do it for 16,000 long-term care homes, why can’t we do it for 637?”

Plant owner willing to move, but says process is slow >>>from page 1 Tuesday’s meeting, a dozen of whom stepped up to air their grievances against ML Ready Mix and whose complaints ranged from the “toxic fugitive dust” that its cement batching plant at 29 Judson emanates, to allegations that the plant is operating illegally and without the proper permits, to accusations of noise violations as a result of the no less than 160 rumbling, ML-bound cement trucks and 18-wheelers they say travel up and down their street each day at all hours, among many other complaints.

When confronted by York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata with some of those allegations late into Tuesday’s meeting, ML Ready Mix owner Renato Silva offered a jeer-inducing “no comment.”

Councillors spurred by the Judson Street residents’ deputations, meanwhile, voted unanimously to undertake a number of different measures to help remedy their situa-

tion – measures EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes warned residents likely would not translate into a quick fix to the situation.

“When I was elected in 2003 this was just a sleepy site, but as development has occurred, it’s gotten busier and busier over the last couple of years, and it’s been just absolutely insane,” he said, noting that he has been working hard to remedy the file for years.

“I just want to caution my residents. I know you don’t want to hear it, but I’m telling the truth – there is no magic wand to close this place down tomorrow,” he added. “We have to work together...We have to work with them to move.”

To those ends, the dozen or so motions filed collectively at Tuesday night’s EYCC meeting by various councillors included several geared towards relocation of the plant: n a motion by Grimes requesting the acting director of the Economic Development

and Culture department’s business service to “identify and pursue” potential locations within wards 2 and 7 that could be utilized for relocation and consolidation of concrete production facilities; n a motion from Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford requesting the deputy city manager to look into moving the Works Yard on Commissioners Street (in Portlands) to another location to allow ML Ready Mix to relocate there; n a motion by Nunziata that Metrolinx submit to EYCC a status update on the easement it was reported that they proposed for the site, which, if exercised, could lead to the land being expropriated from ML Ready Mix; n a n d a m o t i o n by Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Peter Milczyn requesting the director of community planning to conduct a review of employment lands in the west district that may be suitable for cement

Of his own motion, Ford said it was just the “magic” solution Grimes and his residents have been seeking – a proposal that simultaneously “cuts through the red tape” and “thinks outside the box.”

“We have to come up with a solution ourselves. And the solution is very simple: we have to relocate these folks,” he said.

Relocating ML Ready Mix, however, has already proven a tricky business.

areas of their wards in search of a relocation site, have come up empty.

And when Milczyn approached ML Ready Mix with a property with the proper zoning on Vulcan Street in his Ward 5, he said Silva dismissed it as “too expensive” – a charge Silva denied at Tuesday’s meeting.

“I would just like to say, I’d love to put an end to this and I’d welcome to look at alternative sites. Having said that, we have looked at other sites with Mr. Grimes and Mr. Ford, as well, and unfortunately, to wind up making a deal, it’s all based on conditional timing,” he lamented, noting that not many sellers would be willing to forestall the sale of their property for upwards of a year-and-a-half in order for him to apply to rezone.

“That’s been our dilemma.

If we could expedite something, absolutely I’ll entertain looking at different sites. I don’t have an issue.”

While city staff work

alongside councillors and ML Ready Mix to find a suitable relocation site, councillors also approved a series of other motions aimed at determining if and to what degree ML Ready Mix is in violation of city bylaws and provincial standards as they pertain to: noise abatement requirements, air quality and dust emissions, hours of operation, volume of truck traffic, etc.

While all motions filed on their behalf were unanimously approved, Judson Street residents were still left at the end of Tuesday’s meeting dreading another sweltering summer season confined inside their homes with all their windows kept firmly closed to dust and noise.

“We cannot stand another summer in hell. For the sake of our families, children and grandchildren, please help us,” Piscione pleaded.

SIU clears officer in Epping Street shooting Following a seven-month investigation, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has concluded there are no reasonable grounds to charge an Etobicoke police officer in connection with the October 2013 shooting of a theft suspect.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, Oct. 5 on Epping Street began when the officer was dispatched to a theft-in-progress call at 7:31 a.m., the SIU reported in a statement released Friday, May 9.

When the officer arrived on the scene, he witnessed a man standing behind a van with its rear windows broken out on a residential driveway.

The officer commanded the man several times to come out from behind the van, but the man refused.

Instead, the SIU reports the man picked up a garbage bin and, holding it in front of himself, approached the officer with it.

The officer took out his baton and directed the man to drop the bin, and the man complied – only to pick up a

mallet from the ground and continue his advance toward the officer.

Warnings issued The officer then drew his firearm and proceeded to retreat backward, all the while ordering the man to drop the ‘hammer’. After the man smashed the window of a second vehicle in the driveway, he joined the officer on the sidewalk.

“The officer continued to order the man to drop the ‘hammer’ and get on the ground. He refused,” the SIU report reads. “When the distance between the two was about a metre and a half to three metres, the officer discharged his firearm twice.”

The man, the SIU reported, suffered serious injuries including gunshot wounds to the groin, forearm and chest.

The SIU assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators. Three witness officers and seven civilians were interviewed, including the injured man. The officer

also consented to an interview and provided a copy of his duty notes to the SIU. Acting director Joseph Martino said the man “had given every indication that he was primed for an attack on the officer with the mallet.”

“He had used it only seconds before to smash out the rear window of a vehicle and was approaching the officer with menace, still armed with the mallet. For his part, the subject officer gave the complainant every opportunity to desist from his violent course.

Regrettably, tactical communication and the threatened use of his baton proved ineffective as the complainant’s aggression only seemed to escalate.”

In the circumstances, Martino continued, “the officer’s fear for his life seems a reasonable one to have harboured, as was his belief that lethal force was necessary to preserve himself...I am satisfied the shooting in question was legally justified.”

Toronto police continue to investigate the scene of a fatal accident on Renforth Drive south of Eglinton Avenue West in the early hours Friday. A male motorcycle driver was pronounced dead shortly after the Thursday night collision.

Motorcyclist killed in accident A 22-year-old man was killed after his motorcycle collided with an SUV on Renforth Drive in Etobicoke last Thursday night.

According to Const. Clint Stibbe of Toronto Police Traffic Services, the motorcyclist was headed northbound on Renforth at Eringate Drive shortly after 9 p.m. on May 8 when he was struck by a southbound Kia Sorrento SUV attempting to turn left into the plaza on the northeast corner of the intersection.

One year after his heart stopped, Const. Andrew Rosbrook began a run from Ottawa to Toronto to raise awareness of the need for publicly accessible defibrillators.

The Toronto police officer was near the finish line of Toronto’s annual spring half-marathon when he suffered a cardiac arrest May 5, 2013.

The scream of a fellow runner brought over Det. Laurie McCann and an offduty physician. A paramedic and a paramedic-in-training soon joined the efforts to revive the 48-year-old.

defibrillator then arrived by bike and administered a shock that re-started Rosbrook’s heart, saving his life. He awoke at St. Michael’s Hospital five hours later.

“By that point they had put a stent in the one artery

that had become blocked and opened that up. I was actually feeling pretty decent,” Rosbrook said. “And then I hear the story of how I owe my life to some fantastic citizens and a Mikey defibrillator.”

Rosbrook was running a month after his cardiac arrest and returned to work in three months.

On May 5, Rosbrook began his 470-kilometre New Life Marathon from the police memorial on Parliament Hill.

He completed it one week later (Monday, May 12) at the Ontario Place location of the finish line of the race that nearly ended his life last year.

The run raised money for the Mikey Network and raised awareness of the importance of public access defibrillators.

Police at 23 Division replace boy’s stolen bike ‘I felt upset...then I felt happy,’ 11-year-old boy says about gift from local police TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com

Primary Response Unit Staff Sgt. Ron Boyce met mom and son when they arrived at the station.

“Damien kept saying: ‘Are the police going to get my bike back?’” Boyce recalled.

“I felt bad for him. About an hour later, a group of us sat down to talk about the situation. I suggested we check our garages at home and bring in parts if we had to in order to build Damien a bike. I didn’t want him to lose his faith in the police.”

The next day, Sgt. Charles Kim brought his daughter’s used bicycle in to the station. Boyce grabbed a new helmet for Damien among bicycle equipment leftover from a police program last summer.

Boyce called Murray, but said little other than to ask mother and son to return to

Damien and his mom, Novlette Murray, went to Albion library last Saturday to sign out some books.

When they left around 4:30 p.m., the boy’s bike had been stolen from the library’s bike rack.

At Damien’s insistence, they went to nearby Toronto police’s 23 Division station at Kipling and Finch avenues to report the theft. “‘My bike is gone. My bike is gone,’” Murray recalled her son saying. “I told him his bike was not coming back.

But we went to 23 Division to report it. They were very nice to us.”

“When we got here, officers presented the bike to my son. It was very awesome. It was so nice of them. Damien was so happy,” she said.

Damien remains elated.

“They gave me a new bike.

I was surprised,” he said. “I felt upset when I lost my bike. But the police helped get me a new bike and then I felt happy.”

A lock for Damien’s new bike is top of the mom and son’s to-do-list.

A tendering notice was published online this week by the provincial transit planning agency, which is seeking contractors to install the walls plus security fences, as well as see to landscaping along the corridor between the Strachan Underpass and the Humber River Bridge.

Earlier this year Metrolinx announced it was going ahead with a controversial plan to erect 10 kilometres of fivemetre-high noise walls at a cost of $20 million for design and building. The walls are intended to reduce noise and vibration from the UnionPearson (UP) Express air rail link service currently under construction.

Bloor-Danforth track work to start More weekend Bloor-Danforth subway closures are planned as the TTC repairs subway track between Victoria Park and Kennedy Stations.

The poor condition of the outdoor tracks between the stations has caused the TTC to restrict speeds of subway trains passing through until at least the end of June. The result for commuters has been longer than usual trips caused by the backing up of trains at opposite sides of Victoria Park.

As it did last weekend, the TTC plans to close the subway to travel on the weekend of May 24 between Woodbine and Kennedy stations so work crews can continue replacing

Those are some of the findings from a recent online survey commissioned by the Rubber Association of Canada which represents tire manufacturers. The study found the vast majority of the 1,002 surveyed drivers had “glaring gaps” when it comes to proper tire inflation despite 96 per cent agreeing it was important.

A press release explaining the study claims properly inflated tires reduce excessive fuel consumption and can save drivers at least $100 annually.

Scouts host annual Haliburton Club Breakfast Help send Scouts to summer camp

The 43rd annual Haliburton Club Breakfast set for next Thursday, May 22, in Toronto helps send young people to summer camp.

Hosted by Scouts Canada Greater Toronto Council, this year’s break-

fast takes place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in the Canadian Room, from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

The breakfast helps to raise funds to provide safe, well-maintained facilities for thousands of youth

to enjoy at the Haliburton Scout Reserve, or at the Woodland Trails facility, which provide summer activities for Scouts.

Included in these programs are canoeing, boating, fishing, orienteering and nature study at the 5,000-acre Haliburton Scout Reserve.

Scouts Canada strives to prevent having any youth turned away due to financial hardship. Thanks to funds raised at the breakfast, every Scouting youth has a chance to visit these camps where dreams and memories are made.

Guest speaker at the breakfast will be Brian Price, Olympic gold

medal winner in 2008 as coxswain of the Canadian men’s eight rowing team.

Changing a flat to a spare - before you need it. Not sure what you need? Here’s a quick check list: a spare tire, a diamond jack, a tire iron, a pair of gloves and a flashlight.

Get loose. You need to do a little prep before you get to work. Start by loosening the lug nuts. These small pieces of metal keep tires attached to the car so they’re typically screwed on very tightly. You’re going to need a tire iron and a little elbow grease to get this done.

Lift it up. Here’s where the heavy lifting takes place, but luckily not by you.

There is nothing drivers dread more than the sound of rubber flapping on asphalt.

Typically, the first reaction to a flat tire is disbelief, followed by annoyance and then a quick phone call to a towing company.

What happens when there is no phone signal and no tow truck? Here are five easy steps to changing a flat for a spare: Look ahead. Most car manufacturers include with the vehicle all the essential tools needed to change a tire. Inspect that the equipment is not only where it should be, but also that it’s in good working order

Mimico tulips bloom once again for festival Tiptoe through the giant tulips.

Come enjoy the annual Mimico Tulip Festival when it blooms Tuesday, May 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. in Mimico Village on Royal York Road between Evans Avenue and Newcastle Street.

Thunder nearly topple top seed, settle for silver

The underdog Etobicoke Thunder midget girls team earned the provincial silver medal.

The Etobicoke Thunder midget girls basketball team may have been the eighth and final seed in its Division 4 Ontario Cup championship series in London earlier this month, but they nearly won it all.

In the end, the Thunder settled for the silver medal after a 63-60 loss to the top seeded Motion Lady Ballers in the championship game.

The Thunder managed to upset everyone else, including their semifinal win 38-36 over Timmins.

Along the way they also defeated sixth-seeded Sudbury 31-26 and third-seeded Dundas 36-26.

The Motion Lady Ballers meanwhile won its first three games by a combined 64 points.

“Winning the silver medal was a great accomplishment for these young ladies,” said Thunder coach Rick Sturino.

Memorial Cup bound Finn picks up captain’s trophy Last week couldn’t have been much better both on and off the ice for Etobicoke’s Matt Finn, captain of the Guelph Storm.

Off the ice, he picked up a major Ontario Hockey League (OHL) award on Tuesday, the Mickey Renaud Captain’s Trophy which is bestowed by a media selection committee to the OHL team captain “that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice, with a passion and dedication to the game of hockey and his community ...”

On the ice, he helped his team to a 4-3 win over the North Bay Battalion last Friday to win the OHL championship best-of-seven series in five games.

Finn contributed a goal. Guelph now advances to the Memorial Cup national major junior hockey championship May 16 to 25 in London.

He’s the second player from Etobicoke to receive a major OHL award this spring. The previous week, Connor Brown of the Erie Otters was named OHL player of the year, in part for winning the regular season scoring title.

The two players are well acquainted with each other: both players played their youth hockey together (starting at West Mall Lightning and then the Toronto Marlies), both are former students at Etobicoke’s Michael Power/St Joseph Catholic Secondary School and both are Toronto Maple Leaf draft picks (Finn second round, 35th overall; Brown sixth round, 156th overall). Both are also 20 years old.

“It’s a huge honour to win this award,” Finn said, in an OHL media release on Tuesday. He also acknowledged his teammates. “From what I’ve heard, Mickey Renaud was not only a great hockey player but an even better person and leader on and off the ice. To win an award in his name is very humbling.”

Finn finished third among defenceman this post season with 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 20 games; in the regular season he was second in scoring among defencemen with 61 points (14 goals, 47 assists) in 66 games.

Patriots in tough at nationals The Toronto Lakeshore Patriots are finding the going tough at the RBC Cup in Vernon, B.C. with a win and two losses in their first three games.

Along with the host Vernon team, the national championship tournament pits the top four tier-two Jr. A teams in the country including: the Patriots from central Canada, eastern representatives Carleton Place Canadians and two representatives from the west, the Yorkton Terriers and Dauphin Kings.

The Patriots, who are based out of Etobicoke’s Westwood Arena, are slated to close out the preliminary round today (Thursday, May 15) against host Vernon. The Patriots lost

The Mimico Mountaineers Jr. B lacrosse team, who split a couple of close home games last weekend, have another pair on tap this weekend.

On Friday, 8 p.m., at Mimico Arena, the Mountaineers host the Clarington-based Green Gaels; and on Saturday, May 17, 7:30 p.m., they head to Georgetown to take on the Halton Bulldogs.

The Mountaineers last Sunday lost 12-9 to Gloucester Griffins, the final goal into an empty net, and on Saturday defeated the Nepean Knights 7-6.

Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has commenced a study to address erosion and slope instability at high risk areas identified along the Humber River between 1 Katrine Road and 7 Riverhead Drive in the City of Toronto, following a severe storm event on July 8, 2013.

Residents and other interested parties are invited to attend a public meeting to find out more about the study, provide feedback on solutions being considered, and to discuss next steps in the process. You will have the opportunity to speak with and ask questions of project staff, and provide your input.
