Hundreds to run for Terry Fox at West Deane Park

WALKING TALL

Local event has raised more than $1M since its 1981 inception TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Ken Gale is a cancer survivor. Like hundreds of thousands of Ontarians, he will walk in this Sunday’s The Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research. The energetic 66-year-old will be recognizable for the Run’s red cancer survivor T-shirt and through his work as co-organizer for the seventh year of The Terry Fox Run in central Etobicoke’s West Deane Park. Last year, the West Deane Park Run surpassed $1 million in fundraising for The Terry Fox Foundation. The Martin Grove Road-Eglinton Avenue West Run began 31 years ago, one of the original Runs in Canada.

Today, the autumn Canadian tradition involves global participants and has raised more than $600 million for cancer research since Terry Fox ran his 143-day Marathon of Hope in 1980. Gale took fast action when he was diagnosed in the summer of 2005 with very early stage prostate cancer. He had been on the lookout for it. Both his father and grandfather had prostate cancer. He has since remained cancer-free. In 2008, Gale underwent unexpected pacemaker surgery the weekend before that year’s run. He still made it out. “The thoughts initially on the day of the Run are the reasons we’re there in the first place — to remember Terry Fox and what he and his >>>PARTICIPANTS, page 5

TTC fare hike expected next year RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A spokesperson for the TTC said the transit authority will look at a variety of factors to determine how much fares will increase in 2013. Brad Ross said a budget report scheduled to be presented to the TTC @ETGuardian

board in the fall will indicate by how much fares go up as of January. To calculate a potential fare increase, Ross said the TTC considers the current level of subsidy it receives from the city, the level of service required to maintain and improve existing service and attainable cost efficiencies.

“It’s not black and white,” said Ross, executive director of communications for the TTC yesterday. “There are options we must consider before a recommendation can be made.” A potential increase of 10 cents would work out to $30-million in >>>NO INCREASE, page 7

Getting MADD to make a change Don Bosco teens first to screen MADD Canada’s emotionally charged film TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com

S

ilence. Then the sound of crying. Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School students sat in rapt attention Wednesday morning, the first among more than one million Canadian teens this school year to watch MADD Canada and LCBO’s hard-hitting, emotionally charged anti-drinking and driving film, Long Weekend. The two-part school assembly features a dramatic film with production values to rival some Hollywood movies, followed by a heart-wrenching film of testimonials from families of real-life victims of impaired driving. Long Weekend, MADD Canada’s 2012-13 School Assembly Program, as well as its Project Red Ribbon campaign, was funded to a record $1.27 million by LCBO, as part of the liquor board’s December Spirit of Giving in-store customer donations’ campaign. The funds enable MADD Canada to make 900 presentations of Long Weekend at no cost to 900 high schools across Ontario this school year. Its message: Think. Plan ahead. Don’t drink or drug and drive. Don’t get into a vehicle with anyone who has. The dramatic film follows teenager Brian Martin as he and older brother, Malcolm, girlfriend, Jessica and best friend, Raj, hit the road for the cottage on a long weekend. No one foresees how their actions will lead to devastation for two families. All but driver Brian smoke pot in the car. The teens crack open can after can of beer. They drink

MADD Canada and the LCBO premiered their new film on the devastation drinking and driving can cause at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary on Wednesday, the first stop of a tour through high schools across the province. To raise awareness, Grade 12 students, from left, Nadia Mensah, Khadijha Morris, Evelyn Appiah, Mellissa Roberts, Alexandra Cruz, and Kadisha Bernard, wore the stories of people killed by drunk drivers to discuss with their classmates.

while swimming, illegally operating a motor boat, even while diving off a bridge perilously close to rocks that could result in quadriplegia, even death. The next day, a trip to town for ice cream turns tragic when a stillimpaired Brian drives into Charles, whose car explodes into flames. Both Brian and Charles are killed. Jessica never walks again. “I never thought I’d die like this — as a statistic. Why didn’t I listen to Jessica (and not drive). All I leave behind is pain, sorrow and regret,” says Brian in the film, as the Crash Test Dummies’ song At My Funeral plays. Won’t you come/To my funeral when my days are done... The film and MADD Canada’s School Assembly Program expose false perceptions about alcohol,

drugs and driving, including binge drinking, the reality of marijuanainduced impairment, of mixing alcohol and marijuana and the danger of accepting rides from alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers. Every year in Canada, between 1,250 and 1,500 people are killed in impaired-driving crashes, MADD Canada reported. Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of death of 15- to 24-year-olds and approximately 50 per cent are alcohol-related, MADD Canada further reported. Since 2009, 350 young people have been killed, 41,000 injured in impairment-related crashes. “It’s not an accident. It shouldn’t have happened that someone chose to get behind the wheel impaired,” said MADD Canada National president Denise Dubyk.

“We’re all left to wonder, ‘How could it happen? Why does it continue to happen? We read it in the paper and hear it on the TV and on the radio every day. We think, ‘Oh my gosh.’ And we go on with our day.” Dubyk told students she too thought that until the morning police officers arrived at her door. Her son-in-law Darryl Ray had been killed in an impaired-driving crash. He left her daughter Tammy and two young sons, ages two and six at the time. “I cannot tell you the pain and the grief of watching my grandsons lose their father, and watching my daughter have to struggle along as a widow and raise these young boys,” Dubyk said. “We don’t want to see it happen to anyone else. That’s why we do

what we do. I can’t change what happened to us. But I can change it for others.” Ed Porter was in the shower when he missed his teenage daughter, Katelynn Lillian’s 8:45 p.m. phone call on Dec. 12, 2009 asking for a ride home from a party. At 12:20 p.m. police knocked on Porter’s door. Katelynn had been killed around 9:20 p.m. when the truck driven by an impaired friend drove over an embankment. Katelynn had worn a seatbelt. But the crash at 90-kilometres an hour ejected her. The coroner’s report said she died on impact. “I felt like a failure as a father,” Ed Porter said. “I kissed my kids and told them I loved them every night. Unfortunately, teenagers don’t really know the severity of substances (alcohol, drugs). Alcohol is what killed Katelynn. I don’t blame it on poor driving. It was the choice of the young man who drove drunk.” In the Don Bosco auditorium, no cell phone sounded. No teens whispered to a friend. The teenagers sat in stony silence for an hour as Dubyk spoke, then watched the dramatization, followed by the realities of families sharing the raw grief of lives lost and lives shattered. Grade 12 student Khadijha Morris, 17, was one of a group of Bosco Student Action Team students wearing black, the stories and photos of people killed or injured by impaired drivers hanging on a cord around their necks. Morris shared the stories of Amy Elizabeth Kauffeldt, a 17-year-old Calgary teen killed by an impaired driver on June 19, 1999 and of Scott Douglas Wooly, 19, killed on June 15, 1997 by an impaired driver in Fort McMurray, Alta. “Long Weekend was emotional. It was hard to watch. We were all crying and I’m not a crier,” Morris said. “It was very hard to watch, especially the father who lost his daughter. It made me realize how precious life is, not to take it for granted. If you’re intoxicated, call a taxi, call someone. Don’t get behind the wheel. Don’t do anything reckless that could harm yourself or others. Drink responsibly.”

United Way supports our neighbourhoods

U

nited Way Toronto has set an ambitious fundraising goal of $116 million for this year’s campaign drive. That’s $1 million more than was raised in last year’s campaign. “We know it’s going to be tough, but the agencies we fund really, really need the money,” said United Way Toronto CEO Susan McIsaac at the campaign’s launch last week. Locally, the United Way funds some 200 health and social service programs and our view agencies across the city. That might seem like a lot We can all of organizations slicing up the United Way pie, but residents help make should remember we are dealing a difference with Canada’s largest city and each of those agencies are on the ground making a difference in the communities we call home. That’s especially true in what are considered the inner suburbs of Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough. United Way Toronto understands the needs and challenges being faced in our communities. Back in 2006, it played a key role in identifying the 13 priority neighbourhoods in most need of attention in Toronto, all of which are directly linked to Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough. United Way Toronto understands that we in the inner suburbs are dealing with large numbers of community housing projects, low-rent apartment blocks with little space for community uses or groups, higher levels of poverty, and new Canadians struggling to get settled in numbers the rest of the city does not face. In Etobicoke, funding is making a difference for a number of community groups including the Community MicroSkills Development Centre that helps provide job skills training in the Jamestown (Rexdale) priority neighbourhood. Money, though, is not the only thing this year’s United Way fundraising campaign is seeking from residents. Through a initiative called Imagine A City, Torontonians are being asked for their ideas on how to make a better city. McIsaac, as well as 10 other guest bloggers, will regularly contribute to a website (www.imagineacity. ca) that will share and generate ideas. Residents have numerous ways in which to help out the United Way, from workplace fundraising drives to individual donations. We urge our readers to do their part and get involved. Morning coffee habit runneth over

I

used to go to A Popular Coffee Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless first thing every morning. The lineups at my stop were legendary, just like at all their locations, but I didn’t mind. Toronto’s a big city that’s getting bigger by the nanosecond. Endless queues go with the territory. Besides, at A Popular Coffee Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless, the wait was well worth it. As your basic devoted customer, the cashiers all recognized me and started punching in my order before I even had to ask. What can I say? At that early hour when you’re not sure if you’re even conscious yet, every little bit helps. Alas, nothing lasts forever, I’m afraid. A Popular Coffee Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless decided to expand its menu to compete not just with companies in the coffee business, but with fast-food outlets offering lunch and dinner fare, too. Not good, from my perspective. Not good at all. An unfortunate by-

but seriously

jamie wayne

product of that marketing strategy at my favourite haunt was that the cashiers now had so many goodies to keep track of, though they didn’t stop recognizing me, they couldn’t remember what I wanted anymore. Not that I could blame them. Fact is, I couldn’t remember what the heck I wanted anymore, either. They changed their cup sizes and I was struggling just with that. Nope. This was definitely a sign for me to move on. It was evident that it was way too much to absorb for all of us. I had to get out of there. Ah, but where to go? That was the $1.80 question. As it turns out, not very far at all. To a place just around the corner. A place I walk by every day. A place I had never thought of to get my morning coffee fix. A place known worldwide

as A Popular Fast-Food Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless. Whoulda thunk it? I didn’t know anybody bought coffee at A Popular Fast-Food Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless. But many do, apparently. And as it turns out, the coffee there is quite tasty. The icing on the cake? It’s not nearly as busy during the mornings in A Popular Fast-Food Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless as it is in A Popular Coffee Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless. The big crowds don’t start until the lunch hour, long after I’m gone. So I said, “I’ll drink to that.” Coffee, that is, of course. And just what kind of coffee do I prefer, you may ask? Why, the only kind there is as far as I’m concerned. The kind the cashier calls “The usual”. And all I have to do is nod. n Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. To the editor: Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is certainly a politician who cares. I will never forget when I once wrote to him about an issue pertaining to traffic havoc in my neighbourhood, where I suggested he consider installing traffic lights at an intersection to solve the problem. Even though I was not part of his constituency, he did not ignore me. Instead, he took the initiative to call me personally. He was going to set up an appointment to see me personally at the intersection in question and bring city engineers along to assess the situation. Unfortunately, that meeting never happened as I was going out of the country. But when I returned he followed up with me and said he consulted with the city and was told traffic lights were not an option as there were already many traffic light intersections in the immediate area. I was impressed to see such an honest politician, who are few at our times. They usually knock at your door and promise to make the sky rain milk and honey, but when the election is over, they don’t care whether you’re dead or alive. I hope the court will not dismiss him from his job. But rather, take appropriate measures to make sure the alleged conflict of interest would not happen again. While I cannot take side on this issue, but having seen how caring the politician is, I can confirm that he would not do such a thing deliberately. He must have done it with every good intention to help those who are less fortunate. Abubakar N. Kasim

Hundreds of walkers, joggers and cyclists turned out for last year’s Terry Fox Run at West Deane Park. This year’s run takes place this Sunday once again at West Deane Park with registration starting at 8 a.m.

For the past five years, between 500 and 600 participants have taken part annually in the West Deane Park Run, an ever-increasing number wearing red T-shirts, Gale reported. The run has raised between $65,000 and $72,000 for each of the past five years. “A lot of people have (cancer) stories to tell,” Sprenger said. “It’s not about how much they’ve raised. It’s really about their support of what Terry Fox did and what we all continue to do through the run. There are so many people who are (cancer) survivors today (largely due to research gains).” On April 12, 1980, Fox dipped his artificial leg in the water in St. John’s Newfoundland, then started running his Marathon of Hope. Fox ran through the Atlantic provinces, Quebec

and Ontario averaging an incredible 42 kilometres, nearly a marathon a day. Canadians watched on television and stood on highway shoulders to catch a glimpse of Fox’s athleticism and gritty determination. “If you’ve given a dollar, you’re part of the Marathon of Hope ,” Fox had said, urging every Canadian to donate $1 to help fund a cure for cancer. Then on Sept. 1 outside of Thunder Bay, Ont. Fox felt excruciating chest pains. Doctors confirmed his worst fears. His cancer had spread to his lung. Fox’s Marathon of Hope was over. Fox lost his battle with cancer on June 28, 1981. He was 22. The Terry Fox Foundation is a leading national investor in cancer research, directing nearly $28 million to its cancer research programs in 2011.

>>>from page 1 standard in reading (a 12 per cent hike over the previous year’s result of 53 per cent), 75 per cent did so in writing (a 13 per cent jump up from 62 per cent), and 70 per cent in mathematics (a 23 per cent increase from 47 per cent). Rocco Coluccio, who’s been the “extremely p r o u d” p r i n c i p a l o f Wellesworth for the last three years, attributes his school’s success to a lot of hard work – that of both the students and the whole Wellesworth teaching team. “It’s that whole ship mentality and making sure all our sails are focused in the right direction so that we’re all sailing in the right direction,” he said. “When I got here in 2009, our scores were at 35 (reading), 42 (writing) and 32 (math)...one of my philosophies is we work together as a team, we plan together as a team, and that we support each other as a team. It’s an entire team effort...It starts in kindergarten and it goes all the way up.” Part of the Wellesworth team’s strategy for success was sitting down, looking at the data from its previous results, and working out an approach to dealing with any problem areas. To aid in those ends, Coluccio brought in professional learning teams to work with the Grade 3 team. “The focus was using the instructional day, using our math and literacy coaches from within our family of schools, and helping our team look and reflect upon the data and then plan forward,” he said. Another key ingredient to Wellesworth’s success was keeping the pressure off the kids come test day, he added: “We didn’t make it a big deal...we just tried to make it as low key as possible and not build it up to make them stress, because the more pressure you put on kids, the

worse they do. So it was very stress-free.” Coluccio said that while the whole school is proud of their results this year, that doesn’t mean they’re going to let it go to their heads. “ We’re proud, but we’re not going to get too inflated in our egos, obviously,” he said. “We want to continue building upon these successes.” Across the whole TDSB, the percentage of Grade 3 students who performed at or above the provincial standard on the EQAO tests increased one per cent in reading (to 65 per cent), three per cent in writing (to 77 per cent), and remained the same in mathematics (70 per cent) compared to last year. EQAO also tests Grade 6 students in reading, writing and math, and Grade 9 students in math. The 2011-2012 results from Grade 6 students across the TDSB showed that the percentage of students who performed at or above the provincial standard increased a steady one per cent across all subjects – up to 74 per cent from 73 per cent in reading; up to 75 per cent from 74 per cent in writing; and up to 62 per cent from 61 per cent in math compared to last year. In Grade 9 Academic Math, the percentage of students in the TDSB who performed at or above the provincial standard increased two per cent (to 83 per cent), while those in Applied Math increased four per cent (to 34 percent) compared to last year. “Once again, EQAO results show that TDSB students continue to improve in reading, writing and math,” TDSB Director of Education Chris Spence said in a statement. “While there is always room for improvement, I’m convinced that through hard work and creative programs...our students will continue this upward trend in the years ahead.”

>>>from page 1 revenue for the TTC, said Ross. Fare increases for tokens have already risen by that amount, with further price jumps scheduled for the next three years. He said the budget report may be presented as soon as the next TTC board meeting, scheduled for Sept. 27. One transit advocacy group

thinks increasing fares is necessary for the cash-strapped TTC. Cameron Macleod from CodeRedTO said regular small fare increases are necessary at a time when lack of funds are forcing the TTC to delay maintenance and upgrade work. To solve its financial imbalance, the TTC needs to have access to long-term funding

from multiple sources - whether an increased commitment from the federal government or a percentage increase in the provincial HST – rather than “one-time election goodies,” said Macleod. The city’s budget chief Mike Del Grande and mayor Ford have already made their preference known for a zero-per cent

increase in funding next year for all departments, including the TTC. Through Twitter, TTC riders have already made clear their strong disapproval for a potential fare hike. “There’s got to be other and better solutions than just a fare hike. Seriously, TTC?” Noella Choi tweeted on Thursday.

Proposal issued in May to three telecommunications companies RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Hong Kong’s had it since 2007. New York City, London and Paris have all recently introduced it. But when it comes to wireless Internet, it’s unclear when Torontonians will join their international counterparts surfing the net, updating social media statuses or engaging in other online activities while on public transit. GO Transit and TTC say they’re prioritizing implementation of Wi-Fi. But spokespersons for both transit agencies were unable to say when exactly that will be. Malon Edwards of Metrolinx, the provincial Crown agency tasked with running GO, said Wi-Fi is a priority of the transit authority’s passenger charter, which promises riders a “comfortable travel experience.” He said a rollout is tentatively scheduled for sometime in 2013, but Wi-Fi

planning is still in the early stages. “There is no firm date for implementation,” said Edwards recently. Me a n w h i l e t h e T TC , which has discussed since 2010 installing a wireless network to allow phone and Internet use in the subway, plans to provide an update during a board meeting sometime in the fall, said Jessica Martin. “There hasn’t been much movement,” said Martin, who works in corporate communications for TTC. “We have limited info at the moment.” What is known, according to a May report presented to the TTC board, is a request for proposal (RFP) was issued in May by the TTC for three pre-qualified telecommunications companies: Bell Mobility, Broadcast Australia and ExteNet Systems, based in Chicago. The winning bidder will be responsible for designing and installing a wireless network to work in TTC subway

Wi-Fi on subway trains would allow riders with smart phones to access the Internet while on the go.

stations and platforms, but not tunnels. The provider

would cover the estimated $50-million installation cost,

in addition to an annual fee to cover operational costs. To satisfy a requirem e n t o f t h e Ca n a d i a n Radio-Television Telecommunication Commission (CRTC) customers of all available cellular carriers would have equal access to the network, no matter which company is ultimately chosen as the wireless provider. Questions remain as to whether the wireless service will require users to pay for access or whether it will be offered at no extra cost beyond fare entry to the subway. Offering a free Wi-Fi service that requires users to watch ads in exchange for access is growing increasingly popular, with global spending on Internet advertising rising more than 30 per cent in the last three years according to a recent report by forecaster ZenithOptimedia. Over the summer, New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority offered free Wi-Fi at six subway stations located in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan, with plans to expand the service to 30

more stations by the end of the year. London’s Underground introduced Wi-Fi to 80 tube stations during the Summer Olympic Games at no cost to users. The Paris Metro has also introduced a limited service. Whether free or not, Mihnea Stoian believes in an age of smart phones and tablet computers that it is unacceptable Toronto transit vehicles are not providing wireless connections. “I would say that not having Wi-Fi is out of step as to what we as a society expect,” said Stoian, co-founder of the transit advocacy group Commuters United, along with Nilaye Thakrar. While Stoian praised both TTC and GO for improving how it updates commuters on service changes, he said it was frustrating not to be able to enjoy the same amenities transit riders in other parts of the world take for granted. “We can’t always be playing catch-up if we want to have a world-class transit system like in Asia or Europe,” he said.

Annual TUFF film festival runs in subway system RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A film festival taking place in subway stations promises a diverse offering of cinematic fare for commuting movie lovers with literally one minute to spare. All week long, the sixth annual Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) will screen 60-second silent films on the platforms at all TTC subway stations via the Pattison OneStop screens, which also display next train information, news and advertising. In all, more than 70 films were chosen from 31 different countries for this year’s festival. But unlike the heavy wattage glamour of TIFF, TUFF co-founder Michael Girgis promises no Hollywood celebrities or red carpets, just engaging short films that riders can watch in entirety while they wait for their train to arrive.

“The usual arrival for a subway train is between three and five minutes,” said Girgis, president and CEO of the OneStop Media Group. “With that wait time, we felt compelled to program the network rather than just sell advertising.” Girgis, who founded the festival with Sharon Switzer, said TUFF gives younger filmmakers the chance to showcase their talents at a time when the city is hungry for film. “We just felt it made sense to do this fest when the city is celebrating film,” Girgis said. “Why not have people celebrate young filmmakers at a time when we’re celebrating blockbuster filmmakers?” The films will screen on more than 300 Pattison digital screens every 10 minutes each of the day of the festival, which runs until Sept. 17. In addition, designated screens, or film zones, at Dundas, St. Andrew and Bloor stations will show the films uninterrupted.

Non-TTC users can also watch films online at www. torontourbanfilmfestival.com or head to the Drake Hotel on Queen Street West from Sept. 14 to 16 where a special screening room will be made available. Filmmaker Jake Chirico said TUFF is a rare opportunity for independent artists to showcase work in a public setting such as the TTC. “It’s a great way to build arts into a public space and we need more of that,” said Chirico, co-credited along with Lemo Gariba for Magic Colouring Friend Zone: Let’s Draw which screen yesterday. Gerald Fantone said he got some of the idea for his submission Urban Zoo from traveling on the TTC and observing human behaviour. “I’m just excited so many people will have a chance to see my work,” said Fantone who, along with Chirico, was at the media launch for TUFF.

Left, Brendan and sister Kelsey take advantage of the dry weather to climb the children’s climbing tower. Top right, Mario Parez cooks up some chicken for visitors while Kurt Davson tries to cut a coconut in mid-air with a cleaver for 30 patrons. Bottom right, little Louise Loptson has fun in a water ball, one of the many activities for kids during the annual festival. Staff photos/IAN KELSO
