History

o f T HE o l d m i l l

T

he Old Mill Toronto has a cherished motto, Vallis Humbria Angliae Pars Anglisa Procul, “In the valley of the Humber, a bit of England far from England. The beautiful setting and charming atmosphere of the Old Mill Toronto has warmed the hearts of our guests from far and wide. As such it is one of the most familiar and significant landmarks in Canada.

6

OLD MILL

T

he Humber River and Valley are intrinsic to the fabric of Canadian history. Originally the site was an important area for fishing, hunting and as a travel route among the native people of Canada. Later, during the early post war years, water sports were soon the major focus of recreational pursuits. Boat rentals were available on the riverbank, as was swimming and organized boat regattas.

OLD MILL

7

I

t was the year 1615, when Samuel Champlain sent a young guide to scout the route southward from the Lake Simcoe region. So it was that Étienne Brûlé became the first recorded explorer to see the Humber and view Lake Ontario. Brûlé lived among the Huron Indians, learning their language and customs, becoming an important mediator between the Huron Indians and the French settlers.

8

OLD MILL

D

uring the 1600’s the Humber River was known as St. Johns Creek, but was renamed by John Graves Simcoe, the first Governor of Upper Canada, after two rivers in his homeland. In 1793 Simcoe ordered the Queens Rangers to build a sawmill, which he named the Kings Mill. This was the first industrial site of what is known today as the City of Toronto. The William Gambles gristmill was built adjacent to the King’s Mill and would become the site of the present day Old Mill.

OLD MILL

9

B

y the early 1900’s one man’s vision began the transformation of the Humber Valley forever. Robert Home Smith, financier, railway builder, real estate developer and avid sportsman, purchased 3,000 acres in the Humber Valley, from Lake Ontario to what was to become Eglinton Avenue. His concept was to develop a unique modern community.

10

OLD MILL

T

he early prosperous years of the 1900’s were shattered with the outbreak of World War 1 on August 4, 1914, the day the Old Mill Tea Garden opened. The Tea Garden acted as the community centre for the residents of this new residential development, a place where news and events of the day were exchanged. As the popularity of the Old Mill grew, Home Smith began the first of many additions to the Old Mill building. The print room was built in 1919 and was one of the few places of the time that offered the enjoyment of dinner and dancing in an elegant atmosphere.

OLD MILL

11

B

y the year 1928 Home Smith centralized the hub of his activities around the Old Mill with his next addition the administrative office of “Home Smith and Company” later to be known as “Home Smith Properties.” The Cottage was built soon afterwards and became a popular private entertainment spot for Home Smith.

12

OLD MILL

I

n response to the ever-growing popularity of the Old Mill, design and construction of the Dance Hall and the Garret Room began soon after. Home Smith paid great attention to carry over the design features of the familiar English Tudor architecture into the Dance Hall design.

OLD MILL

13

G

roups became a familiar site enjoying the established afternoon English Tea tradition, which began in 1914. Home Smith continued to promote the Old Mill as a focal point of his development. The Old Mill management sent personalized letters to the residents of the area outlining many of the Old Mill’s attractions including dining and dancing, facilities for private parties and special occasions with the emphasis on the quality of food prepared by their famous European Chef.

14

OLD MILL

R

obert Home Smith was also President of the Algoma Central Railway and chairman of the Toronto Harbour Commission during the time the waterfront was being redeveloped for the Union Station railway viaduct. In this capacity, Smith was largely responsible for the establishment of Sunnyside Amusement Park. In February 1935, Robert Home Smith died suddenly in Toronto at age 58. He never lived to see the completion of his dream. Home Smith willed his estate to his close and long time friend Godfrey Petit, who assumed the chair of President of “Home Smith and Company.

OLD MILL

15

T

he Globe and Mail of Saturday October 16, 1954 reports, “Great storm hits after 4 inches of Rain”. Toronto residents were jolted by the fury of Hurricane Hazel.” Cars were overturned, homes and businesses destroyed and carried away by the torrential rains. Thousands of people were left homeless in the wake of her storm. Many properties along the Humber Valley sustained extensive damage or were lost all together. The Old Mill Bridge, the original Grist Mill ruins and the Old Mill itself were spared from Hurricane Hazel. The road adjoining the Old Mill Bridge sustained damage.

16

OLD MILL

B

arely two years later with the continued popularity of the Old Mill, it was expanded once again. Over the next two decades the Old Mill continued to function in the tradition of its past and became a well known landmark to the ever sprawling city of Toronto. In 1973, William Hodgson purchased the Old Mill and in doing so saved it from demolition. The Old Mill was closed for extensive renovations including the addition of a wedding chapel, banquet rooms and beautiful gardens. The Old Mill was positioned as a prominent meeting and wedding destination in Toronto.

OLD MILL

17

I

n 1986 the Old Mill was once again under construction in response to the popularity attributed to the boom years of the 1980’s. An entire new wing of Banquet rooms was added. The Old Mill had grown to a 16-room function facility nestled on the banks of the Humber River. In 1991 George and Michael Kalmar became the next generation of proprietors in the life of the Old Mill. After significant restoration and reconstruction of the original grist mill, the Old Mill Hotel opened on October 2001, featuring 57 luxurious appointed rooms and suites, a full service spa and an English style bar dedicated to Robert Home Smith. So began another chapter in shaping the history of the Old Mill Toronto.

HOW/WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?

In 1985 I opened up shop in The Galleria Shopping Mall, selling a selection of ladies, men’s and children’s wear. I moved to the South Kingsway in 2008 and began carrying strictly ladies-wear. Casual Affairs will be celebrating 30 years in business in 2015!

WHAT THE MOST UNIQUE PRODUCT IN YOUR SHOP?:

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN?

My dream to work in fashion began early, when I was working at a dry cleaners at the age of 13. I liked to read the labels on the clothing and look at how they were constructed. My experience as an employee in retail fashion during my teen years, as well as my fashion arts studies, inspired me to open my own business stocking quality brands.

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS?

I love what I do! It gives me so much pleasure knowing that clients are happy and trust the choices I make for their wardrobe. I have met and become longtime friends with people I would not have known had I not opened my business almost 30 years ago.

Q& &A

WHAT’S YOUR BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY?

My philosophy is to ensure my clients have a positive shopping experience, catered completely to them. I create a client profile which allows me to style their wardrobe without repetitive purchases that are unnecessary. No pressure policy is my motto! weetpea’s is an eco-friendly florist and a hub of all things beautiful. Focusing on providing a visual representation of our customers’ sentiments is the primary goal of our floral designers. All of our arrangements are custom made to order. We want to know who is receiving the flowers so we can create something that speaks to their style and the situtation in which they are being sent.

Q& &A HOW/WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?:

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR PRODUCTS?:

Sweetpea’s began as an eco-friendly landscaping business in 2009. Sara, was working as a freelance graphic designer at the time. Her plan was simply to get outside a few days a week and enjoy some fresh air while working in local gardens. The business simply grew from there (no pun intended).

We source from anywhere and everywhere. We hunt through the standard suppliers for special pieces that meet our unique design style and compliment them with local artists and small design companies from around the world. Our flowers are from locally grown farms or eco-certified imported growers.

HOW/WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?:

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR PRODUCTS?:

I immediately fell in love with the space when I saw it the summer of 2009. Fuelled by my passion for jewellery design, my love of coloured gemstones, and close to 20 years of jewellery making experience, I opened the doors during the holiday season to great success and I never looked back.

I source my gemstones locally and attend international gem shows. A growing number of my clients bring in jewellery they inherited to redesign. Breathing new life into an heirloom is such a privilege. Preserving their personal history through jewelry is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work.

PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO KNOW:

WHAT’S YOUR BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY?:

That I am the only person behind Grace & Angeline Jewelry Studio. Angeline is my mother and while she passed away from a car accident when I was 18, everything I know about jewellery and design I owe her so it seemed only fitting to honour her in that way. She is my muse.

DESCRIBE YOUR SHOP’S VIBE:

Infused with light and colour, it is an intimate, serene space where clients tend to linger. With soft music playing in the background, the décor is vintage French as I was born in Paris. Every décor element has been chosen carefully to lessen any anxiety associated with the purchase of jewellery.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN?:

I wanted to share my love and knowledge of gemstones as well as the wisdom of custom design jewelry. There is a strong emotional value to a piece designed specifically with your aesthetic in mind to make milestones in your life such as weddings, commemorative occasions or the birth of a child.

I want people to come in as clients and leave at the end of this special process as friends. I always strive to connect deeply with my clients. I can then design a piece that is uniquely theirs and that reflect their true spirit while surpassing their expectations. Great customer service is also key.

WHO IS YOUR TARGET CLIENTELE?:

My target clientele is one who values the wisdom of custom design jewellery, great workmanship, individuality and attention to details. My jewellery is deeply personal and feminine with an amazing use of colour. My clients are usually in search of beautiful and unique fine jewellery with meaning.
