We at the TCA sat and scratched our heads for a while, then said ‘you know what? old winter mornings can often mean open season for car thieves, who take advantage of unsuspecting residents who leave their running vehicles unattended with the keys in the ignition and the heat on full blast. In south Etobicoke’s 22 Division alone, there were 20 such warm-up thefts on record during the winter of 2014, and an additional four more have been reported to police in the first four weeks of January – most of those latter thefts in the Lake Shore Boulevard West area and in the Burnhamthorpe Road neighbourhood, Det. Sgt. Madelaine Tretter said. “Most vehicles warm up pretty quickly these days, so my advice to people is just to dress warm, stay with your vehicle and protect your property,” she said, noting the preventable nature of such thefts.
