anitartlet Shop

Anita Ho Vancouver, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? After a couple of years selling my art at in-person festivals, I was interested in setting up an online platform where I could sell my products all year round. Etsy was the easiest for me to start after a lot of research (though I am still learning as we speak). What’s your favorite part of being an Etsy seller? I think it's the vast amount and creatives behind the products I shop for. There is just a never-ending source of inspiration for my own products when I'm just browsing around! How did you come up with the name for your Etsy shop?

Cute stainless steel resin pins in a dandelion and flower design

In all honesty, my username (which is my shop name) was only recently changed. It went through a lot of name changes that actually didn't even use my real name. But I have grown a lot from my amateur artist days and I think I'm finally at a place where I can confidently associate my name with the art and products I make. So my shop name 'anitartlet' is pretty much a word jumble of my name and the word 'artlet' which is a mash of the two words 'art' and 'outlet'. It also is pretty appropriate that I do love eating tartlets too!

Bamboo Birdie Shop

Beth Hazell North Vancouver, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? Since becoming a mother I have been astounded at the number of clothes that we have got through in the last couple of years. Much of which are not suitable to be donated or passed on due to rapid wear and tear after one owner. I didn’t want to send clothing to landfill just because it had a stain or a hole from a tree climbing adventure. I needed a different solution. The earth friendly practices behind Bamboo Birdie grew with my son (the reason I am on this wonderful journey). The ultimate goal is to reduce the harmful environmental effects of the clothing industry by producing clothes responsibly, extending their useful life and then keeping them out of landfills by accepting them back in any condition after use. How did you come up with the name for your Etsy shop? Birdie was a given; B R D are initials of myself, son (Little D) and step daughter (Ree – my son couldn’t pronounce Marie when he was little). As my company is all about sustainability bamboo was a fabric that I was working with in the early days and so it just seemed to fit. As it happens I work with lots of different fabrics now. The sustainable textile landscape is changing so much that I want to stay on top of new and different fabrics that are developed with eco-friendly practices. Last one! Pumpkin spice... yay or nay? Lu Made By Hand Shop

Luiza Libadi Vancouver, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? I work full time at a shoe company where several sample swatches of beautiful leathers arrive constantly. These are small pieces of leathers used to showcase the colours and textures of the materials. After serving their purpose, they are offered as a donation to local fashion schools and whatever is left gets recycled as much possible or discarded. It broke my heart to see all those beautiful materials getting discarded so I asked if I could try to refashion some pieces into earrings and they said yes. My earrings were such a success in the office that the next round of sample swatch clean up I got first dibs! It was lovely to have everyone supporting me with this project. I started making earrings for my co-workers, my friends and my family and people started asking me if I would sell so they could purchase as gifts. So setting up an Etsy shop was the next logical step for me! Where do you make your items?

Pilar Prints Shop

April Rogers Courtenay, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? I decided to get on Etsy while in University completing my Secondary Education Degree. My teachable subjects are Art and English, so I was absorbed in my classes and creating daily. I designed my first travel poster in a digital arts course, hung it on our wall at home, and it garnered some reactions from friends and visitors. So, in my spare time, I designed a few more posters and attended a local artists' market. On the first day, my table felt empty; so that evening I hand drew a few quirky black and white greeting cards on a pre-cut deck. They sold fast and I ended up drawing more at the table to replenish. When I realized I had found a niche of customers who liked my art, I approached a few local shops, received some sound advice regarding production and sales, and opened my Etsy shop in 2015! It was a huge learning curve and I am still learning on the daily. Funny Greeting Cards for Funny People

How did you come up with the name for your Etsy shop? Pilar is an anagram for April and the name of Ernest Hemingway's beloved boat. At the time of opening my Etsy shop, I was preparing for a teaching practicum and urged to change or alter my name on all social media accounts. Wanting a bit of anonymity because of my art's occasionally saucy and inappropriate nature and having studied plenty of American Literature-- only felt natural to name my shop Pilar Prints. Last one! Grace Wen New Westminster, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? I started my Etsy shop originally with two dog enamel pins based on my own drawings. I considered it as a fun project outside my full-time job as an investment representative. While I have more weird animals and characters in my mind, I started turning my imagination into little toys by sewing with felt and making them wearable as brooches. As a plant lover, I always want to decorate my home with various trees or flowers. I especially admire the traditional bonsai trees which are like miniature landscapes you can enjoy at home. Therefore, I also tried to ‘grow’ my own plants with felt. Where do you make your items? All my items are made in my bedroom, which is also my study room – with the crafting tools, embroidery threads, felt fabrics as well as stationery attaching on two pegboards.

Marilyn Colborne Surrey, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? Radiance Soap Company came about due to my reduction of chemicals in my home. I found a store nearby that sold vegan soaps, and I picked up a bar. It was great! My skin felt so soft. It was an unscented hemp soap; the love affair began.

The 6th Scent Candle Shop

Allie Lee Langley, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? Ever since I was young, I have always been in love with candles. I adore the moment my favorite candle sparks to life, enveloping its sweet aroma into my room. In just a matter of minutes the fragrant scents make the air of the room come alive, persuading me to wind down for a tranquil nights rest. Waking up the next morning I feel truly refreshed and rested. Softy gazing into the heart of a burning candle reminds me of the literal meaning of my name-spread knowledge/intelligence-like a candle. Having a candle in my room brings out the best in the environment and inspires me to be a better teacher. As an early childhood educator and teacher, I have made a lot of classroom decorations and educational materials sparkling my creativity. Combined with my love for art, creative ideas, and candles, I thought it would be an amazing idea to make my own soy candles. I started making candles for my friends, and family and with their support I experimented with different soy candle recipes with high quality ingredients. Where do you make your items? Hitomi Nunotani Coquitlam, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? I’ve always been into fashion and creating jewellery. I loved sketching pictures of clothing and accessories to go with it as a kid. I would’ve loved a career in fashion, but life takes you through many unexpected turns. I was in my 4th or 5th career at the time and my husband and I were juggling life at work and home with two kids. We decided that it was getting too stressful and it would be best for one of us to stay home to be with the kids. I stayed home and as much as I feel fortunate and love to be with the kids, I needed something for myself. I went straight into jewellery making. I started participating as a craft vendor at the Powell Street Festival selling my jewellery. There, I experienced for the first time how amazing it was to have customers who were interested in my jewellery and wanted to expand my audience. I had long dreamt of sharing my creations with the world and being on the Etsy platform has given me this opportunity. Where do you make your items?

The name Thé Vert Jewellery encompasses all of this! “Thé Vert” is green tea in French, which the Japanese are known for, and it includes my favourite colour! Where were you when you made your first sale on Etsy? I can’t remember where I was going, but I was sitting in the passenger side of my car when I got an Etsy notification on my phone. I thought it was someone who liked one of my items, but it turned out it was a sale! I turned to my husband who was driving and said, “OMG! I got a sale, I got a sale, I got a sale!” I was super excited! And til this day, I continue to be excited every time I get a sale. I'm always so grateful for each and every one of my customers!

TOODLEBUNNY Shop

Trudy Wyans North Vancouver, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? I originally started my etsy shop on January 19, 2006 when it was very new and still in beta mode. I was selling vintage deadstock enamelled stud earrings from the 1970s just prior to starting my own jewelry line that same year. I have had my own online shop for many years but decided to expand my online presence in the fall of 2020 and reopened my etsy shop Where do you make your items? I worked from home for 8 years before moving into my studio in the historic 1000 Parker Street Studios in East Vancouver in 2014. I have a combined workspace and showroom that is open to the public by appointment. I have a video of my small studio in my profile if you'd like to see where I create. How did you come up with the name for your Etsy shop? My partners pet name for me is toodles, and one Easter he wrote on the card 'to my little TOODLEBUNNY' and it just kind of stuck. He registered the domain name as a small gift, so I guess my company name was given to me, but I love it!

Travel Posters Studio Shop

Karolina Wuniak Burnaby, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? A few years ago I went to travel the world with my husband. We spent over 3 years travelling through 4 continents. When we decided to call Vancouver our new home, I needed to find another way to seize the beauty of all the amazing places we have seen. Having tons of photos on my drive that nobody ever sees is simply a waste. So I started to design vintage travel posters based on my photos. Since I live so close to such magical forests and mountains and I spent a lot of time there, I am constantly inspired by nature which you can probably tell looking at posters :) Unfortunately, our wall can't fit all travel prints, so I decided to share my Canada Travel Posters with the world and other folks who appreciate some amazing travel posters on their walls. That's how Travel Posters Studio was born. What’s your favorite part of being an Etsy seller? Possibility to interact with folks who enjoy nature as much as I do and wants to appreciate it.

Well Beings Supply Shop

Kitty Wong Vancouver, Canada Why did you start your Etsy shop? Confronted with the amount of plastic my lifestyle was creating, I sought to create reusable products to swap out everyday single-use items. With a few meters of fabric and no sewing skills, I FaceTimed my dad for help to transform them into facial rounds, bags, and bath accessories. Where do you make your items? My dad and I work together to come up with the product designs. When it comes to production, we rent a sewing machine in a local family-owned textiles shop about one day per week. My dad would sew all of the products, and the rest of my family & I would cut thread, tie, and package them. I've always been interested in the Sharing Economy Model to reduce carbon footprint, and I'm so proud to be achieving that through Well Beings!
