Born and raised in the Vancouver area, Val never thought she would be in the creative entrepreneurial world. Armed with her degree in Criminology from SFU, she dove into the non-profit world at Dress for Success Vancouver, where she supported women transitioning into the workforce. [2012 - Insert first-born child here] From there, the creative (and entrepreneurial) bug hit, and she started Veespoke in 2013, a unique, small-batch run of handmade scarves.

In 2015, Val joined the volunteer committee for Etsy Vancouver. [2016Insert second child here] In 2017, she became one of the team captains for Etsy Canada in Vancouver. From there, she continued her entrepreneurial journey with Veespoke as a 5-star Etsy seller, participating in local craft shows, building an online platform, and [2021 - Insert third child] organizing markets for the Vancouver Etsy Co.

On top of that, Val is passionate about empowering creatives and makers in their business journey by providing opportunities and a community for them to be a part of and thrive in. Oh, and the most important job since 2012? being a mom to three boys.

A forever entrepreneur, a supporter of cute + funny animal vids, and an adamant idealist (until she's not).

A born-and-raised Vancouverite who made her mark in the craft world with her (now retired) knitwear business. Anita now spends her time as a consumer and cheerleader of local and handmade goods and services. She claims she is “efficient because I’m lazy” and therefore a pro at streamlining processes to just make things work better. After many years of being a vendor and customer, she has a keen eye for in-person market displays, online product photos, and effective lookbooks.

When she is not delving into the craft world, she also works at BC Cancer and deep into true crime stories and her pup, Penny (who randomly cameos at markets!)

GIVING BACK

At the heart of our mission is a deep commitment to giving back. As individuals who have dedicated the majority of our careers to not-for-profit organizations, we have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that financial contributions can have on a charity's ability to achieve its goals.

As market organizers, we believe our responsibility extends beyond supporting the crafting community; we have a duty to uplift our local community as a whole. Since the inception of our partnership, we have pledged to donate half of the proceeds from ticket sales at our pop-up events to charity. Each year, Anita and I thoughtfully select a cause we feel passionate about supporting.

Baby Go Round is a Canadian charitable organization that collects and distributes essential baby items to families in need. They provide a unique service by recycling gently used baby equipment, clothing, and supplies, ensuring that these items reach families who may otherwise struggle to afford them. By partnering with community organizations and social service agencies, Baby Go Round helps to alleviate the financial burden on low-income families, promoting healthier and happier babies.

Make-A-Wish Canada is a non-profit that grants life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses. They believe a wish experience provides hope, strength, and joy during challenging times. The organization works with healthcare professionals and families to identify eligible children and collaborates to determine their one true wish. Make-AWish Canada goes above and beyond to make wishes a reality, having granted over 36,000 wishes across the country since 1983.

JENNY, RICHMOND

Get a grip, glow with confidence!

Established by Jenny in 2023, Alive and Aglow is an athleisure/grip socks brand dedicated to creating premium and comfortable grip socks that seamlessly blend fashion with function.

Admist the challenges of the COVID era, Jenny, like many others, found herself lacking in motivation, confined to her home and lacking physical activity. Determined to make a change, she embarked on a journey of fitness, attending Pilates classes to revitalize her lifestyle. Soon, she discovered that the grip socks, once reserved for Pilates sessions, became an integral part of her daily wardrobe. Even outside of class, slipping on these socks each morning served as a gentle nudge towards an active lifestyle, imbuing her with vitality and radiance.

Recognizing the transformative power of such a simple accessory, Jenny aspires to extend this reminder to the wider community, emphasizing how even the smallest of items, like socks, can profoundly influence everyday health and wellbeing.

I make jewelry using Japanese paper mixed with various mediums including wood, brass, gemstones and seed beads. I use a lot of different techniques such as origami, wire wrapping and beading to create unique colorful jewelry.

MY LOVE FOR ORIGAMI STARTED WHEN I WAS 4 YEARS OLD. I'VE ALREADY BEEN A CRAFTER AND LOVE WORKING WITH SO MANY MEDIUMS, BUT THE BEAUTY OF JAPANESE PAPERS AND OTHER PATTERNS PAPERS IS WHAT MADE ME CHOOSE MY STYLE. I LOVE MAKING EARRINGS BECAUSE I FEEL THEY ARE THE PIECE OF JEWELRY THAT ALLOWS FOR THE MOST CREATIVITY AND AS AN EARRING LOVER, THAT'S WHERE MY INSPIRATION TAKES ME. MY SECOND FAVORITE THING TO MAKE ARE MOBILES, I WITH MORE PEOPLE SAW THEM AS A PIECE OF ART FOR YOUR HOUSE AND NOT JUST A BABY ITEM.

From sketching her floral patterns from plants in the garden to using her photographs as templates to making her own wooden embroidery supplies such as frames, bobbin racks as well as display materials.

Living in Beautiful British Columbia has had an impact on her embroidery as she now find inspiration from her new surroundings. Choosing colors is her favorite part, and living in this beautiful country makes this process even more enjoyable. Different seasons give her different moods and tones for her works. Made by Erin

All my pieces are unique and one of a kind, handmade with lots of love. I truly enjoy the challenge of creating ceramics for use in everyday life, that are both functional and durable, and unique with its own character and charm. My work ranges from tableware such as plates and bowls to decorative planters and bud vases - there are endless possibilities of what could be created from a ball of clay.

Makes by Mali

Made the hard way, made by hand

My small business is a tumbler business where I make tumblers (stainless steel, glass, and snowglobe tumblers) with various beautiful designs. The stainless steel tumblers are good for both hot and cold drinks for up to at least 6 hours. The snowglobe tumblers and glass tumblers are super popular with warm, cold and iced drinks. All of my products are locally created and handmade by me.

All of my tumblers are completely reusable which is great as you can take them with you wherever you go.

Invigorating nostalgic memories through handcrafted scents

Ollie & Co. is a home fragrance and lifestyle brand that was discovered during the lockdown. Having to stay home for long period of time realizing my home is missing a personal touch. I have always been a fan of candles and I decided to make my own for friends and family. It has grown from a hobby into a passion.

The sense of smell is strongly connected to memory & emotions. Our goal is to use our scents to reminisce people, places and moments that matter the most.

Out Of The Woods Woodcraft

SCOTT, VANCOUVER

Out of the Woods Woodcraft makes high quality functional handcrafted wooden items for the home. Made from salvaged urban trees.

Out Of The Woods Woodcraft produces high quality handcrafted wooden items for the home. We make bowls, pepper & salt grinders, cutting boards, rolling pins, candle holders & more. Our aim is to make functional items that look beautiful. We strive to keep forms clean & simple & let the beauty of the wood show. Everything is made in Vancouver using wood salvaged from urban trees that have blown over in storms. Nature takes decades to grow & create beautiful patterns & features in the wood & our goal is to let this shine through in the final piece.

OUT OF THE WOODS WOODCRAFT'S NAME IS A NOD TO WHERE OUR PRODUCTS COME FROM. THEY ARE MADE FROM WOOD THAT COMES FROM OUR URBAN FOREST. THE IDEA THAT YOU ARE PURCHASING A WOODEN ITEM AND IT CAME FROM A TREE THAT AT ONE TIME WAS PART OF OUR ECOSYSTEM. THE TREE GAVE US LIFE AND NOW THAT IT IS DEAD WE ARE GIVING IT A NEW LIFE AS A PRODUCT FOR SOMEONE'S HOME.

ALLISON, NEW WESTMINSTER

a slow hobby ceramicist creating handmade pieces thrown with intention

My journey with clay began in October 2023 when I first sat behind the wheel. What started as a fun excuse to hangout with a friend every week at an intro class, transformed into a slow hobby that now defines a part of my artistic personality. Testing my patience, imagination and mindset, my throwing skills, design ideas and moulding methods are constantly evolving. Each piece has a little story, inspired by having pottery that complements a functional lifestyle. While no two pieces are the same, all have been given the same meticulous attention to detail, care and love.

Jessica is a local barista, coffee content creator and artist who runs a mobile coffee service around the city! She specializes in pour over coffee, espresso based beverages, hot chocolate and tea lattes.

Her art process involves handcrafting lattes with espresso and steamed milk. Drawings and writings are then etched on the latte's foam with food colouring. To capture the latte art's fleeting beauty, a photo is taken of the coffee. The end results in an unique one-of-a-kind keepsake!

When she is not at an event, she is organizing various coffee tasting events and latte art workshops. For her upcoming events, check out her website for more information!

Sugarplum Shortbread

ANN, VANCOUVER

It’s Not Your Granny’s Shortbread “Or Is It?”

Our company started at Christmas 2020. After a long career in nursing it was time for a change, and what started as a Christmas venture continued to become a year long business. I come by this honestly as my background is Scottish and we use my Glaswegian mother Mollie’s recipe but add lots of new and innovative flavours, although traditional is still the best seller. We have customers who have sample and then with tears in their eyes explain how it reminds them of their mother or granny

MY CUSTOMERS ALWAYS SMILE WHEN THEY TRY A SAMPLE! AS IT BRINGS BACK A HAPPY MEMORY OF MOMS AND GRANNY’S! THAT MAKES ME HAPPY TO BAKE MORE!

Tough Titties

EMMA, NEW WESTMINSTER

Empowering feminist goods with a touch of humour I started Tough Titties in 2018 to create more meaningful work and give back to the community. My designs empower with humour, reaching a diverse audience from mothers to breast cancer survivors. They make people laugh and feel seen, normalizing all body types and scars. Over time, I’ve realized how these designs connect people emotionally, transcending gender, race, and beliefs, making the brand and its impact truly special.

IF TOUGH TITTIES WAS A PERSON, IT WOULD BE LOUD, BOLD, COLOURFUL AND CHEEKY!

Vancouver Christmas Ornaments

RHONDA, VANCOUVER

Vancouver Christmas Ornaments is your source for beautifully crafted blown-glass ornaments of Vancouver landmarks and iconic B.C. symbols.

Rhonda loves Christmas and collecting an ornament -- ideally an exquisite, blown-glass ornament -- that captures the essence of the places she she travels. It brings her joy as she reminisces while decorating her tree each year. But finding those ornaments is not easy! So, in 2017, she started Vancouver Christmas Ornaments to help others take a little bit of Vancouver or B.C. home with them to decorate their own tree. Each year, she adds a new hyper-local design to the growing collection of beloved landmarks and B.C. emblems.

THE BEST PART OF MY BUSINESS IS THE STORIES I HEAR FROM MY CUSTOMERS ABOUT THE JOY MY ORNAMENTS BRING. THEY SHARE WITH ME THE SPECIAL MEMORIES THEY HAVE: MOMS OR DADS WHO USED TO WORK AT WOODWARD'S, FAMILIES THAT GREW UP IN A VANCOUVER SPECIAL, OR THEIR FIRST DATE WALKING ALONG THE SEAWALL NEAR SCIENCE WORLD.
