TRAVEL TRENDS

Where to Go and What to Do in the Year Ahead

• The fastest-growing destinations around the world • Hidden gem beaches both near and far • The rise of natural wonders and college towns • Top-selling experiences and attractions

hen it comes to analyzing travel trends, Expedia has a leg up. Being one of the world’s largest online travel brands means being able to uncover themes across flights, hotel stays, searches and bookings, and even experiences – all in the pursuit of arming explorers with everything they need to know to navigate the year ahead. Based on a robust analyses of US traveler data, Expedia’s 2020 Trends in Travel highlights:

The New Top 10 Expedia’s analysts scoured the list of fastest-growing destinations to identify the countries that had the most cities trending based on flight demand. The result: A brand-new bucket list worthy of a new decade. “When we looked at where travelers went in 2019, we saw that the biggest growth in demand was happening for destinations that aren’t the usual tourist hotspots,” said Christie Hudson, Head of PR for Brand Expedia North America. “For example, instead of Venice or Rome, the top trending Italian destinations were in Sardinia and the Italian Riviera. We hope this report shines a light on new places to explore and inspires people to start planning their travel for 2020.”

1.SPAIN & CANARY ISLANDS This European locale boasts a whopping 13 trending cities, but they’re far from its usual suspects. Barcelona and Madrid were downright eclipsed by beachy Ibiza, Balearic capital Mallorca and historic Oviedo and Alicante. Where to go: Ibiza (+50%), Palma de Mallorca (+35%), Alicante (+30%), Oviedo (+30%), Seville (+15%), Madrid (+15%), Jerez de la Frontera (+10%), Tenerife (+10%)

2. CANADA The U.S.’s northern neighbor was far and away the champion of this year’s trend report, occupying 15 of the top 20 spots on our list with nearly all posting year-on-year triple-digit increases. Whether it was the favorable exchange rate, the draw of friendly citizens or the great outdoors, Americans are clearly quite fond of Canada. Where to go: Winnipeg (+465%), Saskatoon (+425%), Regina (+400%), Calgary (+385%), Halifax (+365%), Ottawa(+340%), Victoria (+270%), Toronto (+265%), St. John’s (+170%), Vancouver (+145%), Quebec City (+125%)

4. JAPAN All eyes will be on Tokyo next summer, but our data shows that interest in the country has already picked up, and it’s not just centered around Japan’s largest city. Where to go: Naha/Okinawa (+45%), Sapporo (+40%), Tokyo (+20%), Osaka (+20%)

5. ITALY If you thought Italy started and ended with Florence, Rome and the Amalfi Coast, this year’s trends are determined to prove you wrong. From Sardinia to the Italian Riviera, there’s clearly much more to explore. Where to go: Cagliari (+40%), Genoa (+5%), Olbia (+5%), Calabria (+5%) Photos by Maegan White

6. AUSTRALIA Who’s afraid of the big bad 20+ hour flight? Apparently not American travelers, who went the distance to experience all that Down Under had to offer this year. Where to go: Sydney (+20%), Cairns (+20%), Adelaide (+15%), Melbourne (+10%), Gold Coast (+10%), Perth (+5%)

7. MEXICO While spots like Cancun and PV maintain their popularity, Mexico’s hidden gem beaches and culture-rich cities are officially having a moment as well. Where to go: Campeche (+95%), Oaxaca (+60%), Puerto Escondido (+50%), Puerto Vallarta (+30%), Mexico City (+30%), San Jose del Cabo (+25%), Cancun (+25%)

8. PORTUGAL Portugal might be the most predictable destination on the list this year, but just like Croatia before it, the demand shows no signs of letting up. Photos by Anastasia Golovina

Where to go: Porto (+55%), Faro (+35%), Lisbon (+10%)

9. BRAZIL Brazil dropped its requirement for U.S. citizens to obtain a tourist visa earlier this year, so it seems safe to say that demand will continue to grow in 2020.

US Trend: College Towns from Coast to Coast Small college towns close to outdoor recreation had quite the showing on our domestic trending list. Maybe it’s because where you’ll find university students, you’ll often also find a great craft beer and coffee scene, lively bars and nightlife, and unpretentious locals. Add to that a nearby hiking or biking trail, and what’s not to like?

Photos by Cheryl Wee

1. Cedar City, Utah (+100%) – Home to Southern Utah University, and one hour from Zion National Park, Cedar City also boasts an annual Shakespeare festival. 2. Flagstaff, Arizona (+85%) – Home to Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff is a unique mix of strong brews, great cycling and bluegrass. 3. Bend, Oregon (+65%) – Bend is home to an OSU branch campus and is heaven for the outdoors-lover. Whether your version of outdoor recreation means snow sports and kayaking or just drinking craft beer on a sunny patio, Bend is the perfect place for a long weekend. 4. Eugene, Oregon (+55%) – Ask any Duck and they’ll talk your ear off about how great Eugene is. Not hard to believe given it’s jam-packed with great restaurants, friendly, offbeat locals and tons of outdoor recreation options. 5. Gainesville, Florida (+55%) – Home to the University of Florida, Gainesville is surrounded by wetlands, lakes and state parks galore, and is just an hour- or-so drive from three national forests. Plus, its still-prominent music scene gets major street cred for its ties to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Things To Do We know that activities and attractions are more than just an add-on to a trip. Often, they’re one of the top considerations when travelers are choosing their destination and accommodations, and purchasing the tickets ahead of time makes trip planning easier. So, don’t just go somewhere in 2020 – have an experience. Here are some of the top-selling activities on Expedia for inspiration: 1. Universal Studios Hollywood Admission (+350%) 2. Robot Restaurant Show in Shinjuku, Tokyo (+220%) 3. Chichén Itzá Admission, Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico (+125%) 4. The High Roller Observation Wheel in Las Vegas (+35%) 5. San Diego Zoo (+15%) For more information, please visit www.expedia.com. Photos by David Vives

FlightHub and JustFly’s 10 Point Packing Checklist When Going on a

Ski Trip

Besides the obvious things like packing skis, goggles and helmet, here’s a list from FlightHub and JustFly outlining some things travelers may not have considered. Writing a packing list and laying out exactly what to bring at least 2 weeks in advance should be the first step in relieving stress when it comes to travel. This way travelers will be able to see everything they have, determine what is a necessity, identify anything they might be missing and anything that they could easily live without. Packing is all about being organized, calm and cool.

1. Portable phone charger

Phone batteries die quicker in cold weather so having a portable charger is super convenient. They’re generally quite small and easily fit into a jacket pocket, plus they can be used on or off the slopes.

2. Neck warmer

The neck warmer is a skier’s best friend for a cold winter day. Way more convenient and comfortable than a scarf to protect the neck and face. The perfect stay-warm accessory.

3. Lip balm

Never leave the house without at least 2 different lip balms. The cold will dry out lips instantly, so keeping a stick in a jacket pocket for easy access is recommended.

4. Swimsuit and flip flops

Most hotels have pools or hot tubs and there’s no reason skiers can’t enjoy swimming in winter! Hot tubs are great for soothing muscles after a long day of skiing and snowboarding too.

5. Layers

Winter weather can be unpredictable and the cold can really spoil a day on the slopes. Look for jackets that have removable layers or inner shells. If the sun comes out and it gets too warm, a layer can easily be shed. Bringing some thinner layers or thermal clothing to wear under clothes keeps things lightweight yet keeps heat locked in.

6. Indoor shoes

Although most of a skier or snowboarder’s time will likely be spent outdoors, they will need indoor footwear as well. They shouldn’t forget to pack sneakers or dress shoes/heels if they know they’ll be going out at night.

7. SPF

Just because they’re in a cold climate doesn’t mean they aren’t at risk of sun damage. The snow actually reflects sunlight which makes skiers and snowboarders more likely to get a little too rosy-cheeked. They should remember to apply a minimum SPF 30 before they do any outdoor activities.

8. Hand and feet warmers

These super convenient little pouches do wonders to keep skiers and snowboarders warm and cozy! They’re about the size of a pack of gum and are super flat making them easy to pack. They should be used right before hitting the slopes and will keep the user warm for hours.

9. Socks

Socks are super easy to pack. They’re small, lightweight and easily portable, so a pair or two can be shoved in a carry-on. There is no worse feeling than wet, cold feet. Nobody has ever regretted packing a few extra pairs.

10. Après ski clothing

A lot of travelers will make the mistake of only packing warm, comfortable clothes for the hills, but should not forget to bring clothes they can wear off the slopes. They won’t want to get stuck wearing a turtleneck and sweatpants to the hotel cocktail hour. Dresses, pants, shirts, blouses or even just jeans and shirts, work perfectly for any event. 23 T H E E V O LV E J A N U A R Y 2 0 2 0

Landscaped with native Mimosa and Acacia trees, alongside an abundance of vibrant flora and fauna, Al Messila is the ultimate oasis escape within a dynamic city.

Acclaimed dining and epicurean exploration

Veritas offers a refined Northern Italian menu inspired by seasonal ingredients. Caravanserai will serve hearty, comforting dishes that reinterpret the flavors of the Maghreb and Europe for a contemporary audience. Those seeking a spirited, convivial atmosphere can thrive in the down-to-earth Greek estiatorio, Siga-Siga, with its healthy menu of authentic mezze and fresh seafood. This is complemented by a signature Deli Kitchen where guests can shop, learn and enjoy under the same roof.

An original approach to wellness and family

This includes a gym with kids-fit equipment, a cinema, an educational play area, an outdoor playground with interactive water fountains, and a shaded outdoor pool with hot-dip trampolines. ilton’s luxury brand, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, welcomes guests to a world of visionary design at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi. Having opened on 1 July 2019, the all-pool-villa resort is designed for elite travelers with a discerning eye, with all 122 villas, dining venues and spa and wellness sanctuary boasting exquisite architecture and design that blends perfectly into the landscape. Spanning three interlinking islands in the South Male Atoll, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi is a tranquil retreat surrounded by crystal-clear azure ocean. Designed to meet local environmental requirements and needs, every aspect of the resort has been guided by the natural setting and local architectural style, with a luxury edge. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a breath-taking view of villas nestled within the sparkling Maldivian landscape, inspired by the islands’ beauty, natural resources and local culture.

The resort was built with the preservation of the natural beauty and ecosystem of the area in mind. Where possible construction made use of durable and recyclable materials and native or naturalized plant species in landscaping. Special care was also taken to limit energy and water consumption. The resort’s villas, ranging from one- to two- and three-bedroom layouts, are contemporary in style and clad in solid wood. The rich exterior is contrasted by the modern open plan interior, with a lofty seven-meter-high ceiling elevating the space. All rooms boast spectacular views, with each space facing an enticing lagoon, ocean or beach view, where sun, sea and sand awaits. Every villa also boasts a large (minimum 10 meters in length) infinity pool, a hanging gazebo and a sunbed, as well as a covered terrace with contemporary Maldivian outdoor furniture. “Over the years, Waldorf Astoria has continued to define the hospitality experience for the modern-day traveler through sophisticated and timeless style,”

said Etienne Dalancon, general manager, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi. “No effort was spared in designing, crafting, engineering and building Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, right down to the final finishing touches. We are delighted that we are able to bring guests to a truly inspiring destination, where serene, generous spaces were made for the perfect escape from the busy world.” The sensorial design experience is also evident in the dining venues. Stickman Tribe, an internationally recognized boutique interior design studio, led the creative vision for four of the 11 dining venues: Terra, Glow, The Rock and Li Long.

Terra

Inspired by the Latin name for Earth or Land, Terra invites guests to ascend into the treetops along a feature staircase, where they’ll enjoy a unique dining experience in bamboo pods amongst a vast canopy of foliage. Strategically layered to optimize the vista, guests can expect sublime views of the Indian Ocean.

Glow

A greenhouse-like structure shaded by greenery, with modern, contemporary lines creating an airy dining experience, Glow is a welcoming space offering plenty of sunlight during the day and a glittering view of the night sky in the evening. The eatery serves up delectable dishes with a focus on wellbeing, which are created from the resort’s own on-island nurseries and on-site herb garden — so diners are guaranteed the freshest flavors and ingredients.

The Rock

Set in an atmospheric cave, The Rock is a sumptuous wine cellar and dining experience that caters exclusively to 12 people each night. Guests begin their evening in a sunken seated area where pre-dinner drinks are served, before 28 T H E E V O LV E J A N U A R Y 2 0 2 0

proceeding into the carved-out space for dinner, where the venue’s piece de resistance awaits — a remarkablefour-meterlong table crafted from a 3,000-year-old reclaimed Jarrah tree from Western Australia, which was retrofitted and shipped to the Maldives specifically for The Rock.

Li Long

Li Long serves contemporary Chinese fine dining in a setting that combines traditional elements with a modern twist to create the perfect blend of old and new. An 800-kilogram Ming Dynasty inspired chinoiserie bell draws the eye upwards when first entering the space. The kitchen has been designed to be fully visible, allowing guests to witness the cooking process as they dine on authentic regional delicacies such as Peking duck, prepared in the first wood-fired oven in the Maldives and carved tableside by a Chinese master chef.

“When considering the dining design briefs for these venues — a treehouse dining concept, a cave wine cellar restaurant, an organic farmhouse and authentic Chinese restaurant — the architectural envelope and interior must go hand-in-hand to ensure that the end result is as iconic as the vision,” said Marcos Cain, CEO of Stickman Tribe. In addition to the restaurants designed by Stickman Tribe, meticulous design is integral to other key venues at the resort, including:

Yasmeen

Yasmeen is a unique beachside restaurant where guests can admire the lapping waves of the Indian Ocean. Created from a historic Arabian house discovered on the island during construction, Yasmeen is filled with decorative artefacts and antiques, including 31 Arabic doors and windows, some of which have a 400-year-old history. A village square–inspired courtyard, complete with towering fountain, acts as the centerpiece of the restaurant, with each dining area offering guests a view of the soothing sight.

The Ledge

A partnership with chef Dave Pynt, the culinary mastermind behind Singapore’s Michelin-starred Burnt Ends restaurant, The Ledge brings culinary theatre to the Maldives. With a warm, inviting ambience, the space embraces the sandstone of the surrounding walls and builds this texture throughout to give the feel of it being fused to the island. Complementing the fire from the chef’s custom-built oven, this warmth is further emphasized through the distinct selection of lighting, in-light troughs, fixtures and fittings, as well as the reclaimed timber floors, leather and antique bronze touches, exuding a sense of relaxed luxury. Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi is located at Ithaafushi Island, South Malé Atoll, Republic of Maldives. FLIGHTHUB AND JUSTFLY’S TAKE ON THE FLOATING CITY

V

enice, the Italian city known for defying the rules of architecture, is sinking. The coastal city is renowned for its charm, scenic views and gondola rides. Its unique nature attracts millions of visitors yearly, but also makes it susceptible to flooding. Venice was recently breached by what locals call “acqua alta (high water),” causing water levels to rise by up to 2 meters. Rising Sea Levels: Rising water levels have plagued Venice for nearly 600 years. As time progresses, the water becomes more difficult to manage. 2 key factors cause global sea levels to rise: thermal expansion and melting ice, more specifically, glaciers and ice sheets. Global temperatures are rising. Heat causes ocean water to expand. With large bodies of ice melting into the oceans, sea levels are rising fast. Venice and the Adriatic Sea are no exception. Subsidence: What exactly is subsidence? It’s the progressive process of submergence of a surface of land. Simply put, it’s when land sinks. Venice has been in an uphill battle against subsidence for longer than many people can remember. Like other cities built on river deltas, the sediment below the surface becomes more compact as time passes. In most cases, new matter flows in, leaving new sediment deposits and regulating subsidence. However, rivers that once flowed into the Venetian lagoon were rerouted. In other words, Venice is sinking lower with no naturally occurring deposits to reverse the process. Time Is Ticking: A 2017 report on sea level change by the Quarternary International detailed how the Mediterranean may be affected. What it revealed raised some concerns. Much of Italy’s western coast and regions near the north Adriatic Sea are at risk of being submerged in roughly 80 years. In fact, scientists predict sea levels will rise by nearly 5 feet by the year 2100. The solution is evident but difficult to attain—deter global warming. Many solutions have been proposed, the most notable is the MOSE project.

The MOSE Project: MOSE stands for MOdulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico (Experimental Electromechanical Module). The goal of the project is simple: stop Venice from submerging. If the MOSE project comes to fruition, it will be one of the most impressive civil engineering feats the world over. The idea is that a series of strategically located inflatable gates could be programmed to rise based on the height of incoming tides. Already 35 years in the making, the MOSE project has experienced its fair share of hurdles. The final cost has skyrocketed into the billions. There is also growing concern that it may lead to increased pollution in the area. Currently, the project is at a standstill, with experts projecting it’s completion by the end of 2021. Despite Venice’s current troubles, tourists still visit in record numbers. Some think of being in the City of Canals while it floods as a beautiful and unique experience. “For those who have never visited Venice before, there is so much to see there,” says FlightHub and JustFly’s Matt Keezer. “Tourists should not be deterred from exploring Venice as part of their Italian vacation, while of course respecting any measures put in place to help the current situation.” Photo by Mark Neal

Tips for Dogs’ Days of Holiday Travel

The winter holiday season is here, which means lots of travel to spend time with friends and family. Whether the destination is around the corner or a train, plane or automobile ride away, many will bring their dogs along since, well, they’re part of the family too. No matter the distance, it’s important to plan ahead when traveling with four-legged family members. Canopy by Hilton is one of a growing number of companies that’s working to help dogs and their people feel at home while on the road. The lifestyle hotel brand recently launched a partnership with BARK to provide canine guests with a thoughtful “welcome kit,” and its properties also place dog beds and water and food bowls in guest rooms in advance. “Dogs ultimately want to ‘stay with their pack;’ in other words, they want to be with their humans at home and on the road, and Canopy hotels go the extra mile to make that possible and enjoyable,” explains Lisa Bernier, director of advocacy and social impact, BARK. To help dogs and humans enjoy the season’s festivities together, Canopy and BARK have compiled the following tips to consider while preparing for holiday travels:

Make a Plan: Create a packing list for the dog to ensure you bring everything he or she could need. Also, make sure to plan bathroom breaks at regular intervals during your trip. Maintain a Routine: Try to stick to your dog’s normal routine as closely as possible — this includes serving meals and taking walks at similar times and intervals as at home. Bring a New Toy: Dogs love new toys, so consider letting your dog open holiday “presents” early to help keep him or her occupied during the trip. You can also add a few drops of lavender or vanilla essential oils to the toy to help your pup feel calm and relaxed, especially if he or she is staying in a new place. Burn off Energy: Take your dog on a longer walk or play an extra game of fetch each day. This will ensure your dog receives plenty of one-on-one attention to help him or her sleep if you plan to step out for a few hours. Create a Zen Environment: Like humans, dogs take time to adjust to new surroundings. If you plan to leave your dog alone in a new environment, consider placing an item of your clothing on his or her bed (your scent is comforting!) or playing soothing music or white noise. Psychologist Offers

Your Resolution Free Guide to a Happier, Healthier You in 2020 With the start of a new year it is important to reflect back on the prior year, assess what went well, what didn’t and decide where you want to go next. It takes a lot of mental toughness, self-love, and discipline to create the life you want. Simply coasting along on cruise control reacting to life can lead to victim mentality and stagnation. Dr. Sanam Hafeez PsyD is a NYC based licensed clinical psychologist. She shares key ways to get mentally fit for the new year so you can move forward successfully. In doing so, you don’t have to swear yourself to resolutions and feel like a failure if you don’t achieve them. Just think about the life you want to create and take small steps.

Clear clutter

Look at your surroundings. If you have junk drawers galore, a messy car, countertops and cabinets that are full of stuff you don’t even use, it is time to clear the clutter. According to Dr. Hafeez, “cluttered spaces reflect a cluttered mind. If you want to wipe the slate clean to allow room for new people and circumstances that serve you, you must get your mind clear. Many of my patients who describe themselves as anxious, stressed or even depressed say they feel better when they start clearing up their physical space.”

Eat mind-boosting foods

Mental fitness also has to do with how well our minds work. A loss of memory or the ability to concentrate or focus can easily shift with an improved diet. “Research finds that along with other benefits, foods rich in Omega-3, such as some fish and nuts, as well as those full of antioxidants can help protect the brain from memory decline. “Eating more fish such as salmon and add fruits such as blackberries and blueberries to your diet can help. The good news is that brain-boosting foods include delicious options such as chocolate, guacamole (avocados) and sunflower seeds.

Color!

The adult coloring book bandwagon is a good one to jump on. According to Dr. Hafeez coloring requires total focus on the present. The repetitive motion of coloring provides relief from stress and anxiety by entering a meditative state. “Not everyone can sit still and breathe for 15 minutes per day, but they certainly can color. It’s absolutely a fun way to achieve mindfulness and shake off the day,” explains Dr. Hafeez.

Apologize and forgive

A fast way to mental fitness is forgiveness! “Carrying around resentments and guilt wears us down and can lead to serious illness such as cancer or stroke. If you experienced

a tough break up, divorce or perhaps the 2016 political climate led to arguments and lost friends, reach out apologize and seek forgiveness and move on. Remember, forgiveness doesn’t mean you condone hurtful behavior. Forgiveness frees you and the other person making it easier to move forward.

Learn something new

Challenge your brain by learning a new language, how to cook, paint, do Tai Chi. Pick something you think would be interesting or useful to learn and learn it. If you avoided cooking your whole life, learning the basics will serve your brain very well. According to Dr. Hafeez, “the more we can activate the cognitive functions of our brains the better our short and long-term memory and hand eye coordination will be.”

Plan and prepare more meals at home

Instead of committing to a strict diet, incorporate more homecooked meals into your repertoire. Research shows that food made at home has less fat, calories, and sugar than meals eaten out, even if you’re not specifically trying to prepare and eat healthier meals.

Set a goal to make one new friend a month

As we get older we tend to get stagnant with our friendships and not reach beyond our formed circles anymore. Make an effort to engage the person you always see at your spin class or pass everyday in the hallway at your co-working space. Bringing new people into the fold can add spice and variety to your life.

Do something that scares you

Dr. Hafeez does not mean putting your life at risk. If public speaking has been a thorn in your side, take a class in it, and them put your lessons to use. If you would love to try snow skiing but have been too timid- take a lesson. Has the travel bug bit you but you don’t have a companion? Throw a dart at a map and travel (safety first) wherever the dart lands. It does not matter what you do, however big or small as long as you try something previously out of your comfort zone. One completed victory will give rise to another. About Dr. Sanam Hafeez:

Dr. Sanam Hafeez PsyD is a NYC based licensed clinical psychologist, teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College and the founder and Clinical Director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services, P.C. a neuropsychological, developmental and educational center in Manhattan and Queens. Dr. Hafeez masterfully applies her years of experience connecting psychological implications to address some of today’s common issues such as body image, social media addiction, relationships, workplace stress, parenting and psychopathology (bipolar, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, etc…). In addition, Dr. Hafeez works with individuals who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), learning disabilities, attention and memory problems, and abuse. Dr. Hafeez often shares her credible expertise to various news outlets in New York City and frequently appears on CNN and Dr. Oz.

I

t was obvious they were offering me a dead end job, not a career opportunity. They thought I was going to jump at the chance to work for them, but they were in for a rude awakening. “No Thank You. I appreciate you thinking of me but I don’t believe I am the right candidate for your needs.” Just like that I said, “NO.” It was a revelation.

Some people thought I was crazy for turning down the secure salary to continue forging my own path as an entrepreneur. When they asked me why I didn’t take the position I would simply say, “why say ‘Yes’ when you can say ‘No’.” Most didn’t know how to react to my declaration, looking at me with concern and worry wondering if I had lost my mind, while others seemed intrigued. Saying ‘No’ is your best defense against imbalance, burnout, and exploitation. It may sound counter intuitive but its true. Sadly, ‘No’ is an extremely undervalued tool with immense power. The correct use of a strategic ‘No’ can be the difference between elevating yourself to the next level OR allowing yourself to get caught up in a situation that drains you. Ultimately if you protect yourself, you protect your power. Here are 4 reason why saying ‘No’ is the ultimate power move:

“No” Creates A Boundary

Everyone needs healthy boundaries. Those boundaries need to be clearly defined and easy to identify. When you say ‘Yes’ all the time those boundaries become undefined & blurry. People will begin to assume that no matter what they ask you will always say ‘Yes’. Being thought of as a ‘Yes’ man is highly disadvantageous because it is easy for people to unintentionally take advantage of you, since they know you will agree to whatever they ask. A well thought out ‘No’ protects you from having the unchecked needs of others foisted on you at a moments notice. It is not your responsibility to fulfill everyone else’s needs. Remembering you have ‘No’ at your disposal will empower you to honor your boundaries.

“No” States Your Position

Sometimes trying to politely decline doesn’t work. You could do your best to use flowery language to communicate that you are not interested, but fail to be heard. Understandably, you may hesitate to use the power of ‘No’ because your afraid of being perceived as rude or aggressive. However, it is your responsibility to truthfully state your position with confidence especially if you are not interested in the opportunity presented. In many cases the only thing you can say that will accurately communicate your disinterest in an opportunity is ‘No’. In a business negotiation ‘No’ establishes your position and underscores your non-negotiables. In life ‘No’

voids an entire set of options, and narrows your trajectory. Arriving at these ‘Nos’ can be liberating because they are grounded in the invaluable data you collected from considering all the possible benefits and drawbacks of saying ‘Yes’. When you give yourself permission to evaluate an opportunity through the lens of ‘No’ it is easier to examine the full spectrum of possibilities good & bad. Whereas, when you evaluate an opportunity through the lens of ‘Yes’ the examination can be skewed towards identifying only of the positives associated with the choice.

‘No’ Gives You Leverage

Anytime you employ the strategic power of ‘No’ you are at an advantage. You know what someone else needs and the urgency with which they wish to have that need met. You are then given an opportunity to leverage what you know to your benefit, by presenting them with an alternative that is mutually beneficial. ‘No’ gives you time to evaluate the best way for you to say ‘Yes,’ putting you in control.

‘No’ Protects You From Yourself

Everyone wants to be liked, but at what cost? Always Saying ‘yes’ to your Boss, Partner, Children, and Friends is a one way ticket to resentment-town. Saying ‘yes’ all the time creates an unsustainable dynamic in your relationships that causes an energetic imbalance. As the Yogi’s say you need to “Drink as you Pour.” It is unsustainable to be in constant service of others with out pausing to be in service to yourself. In order to put yourself first you have to stop saying ‘YES’ to everything. Saying ‘No’ is both an act of compassion for others and individual self-preservation.

Ultimately saying ‘No’ is a critical asset on your success journey.

Knowing how and when to assert yourself is an art. One must practice employing the power of ‘No’ in order to gain comfort and confidence. Even though collaboration and cooperation are essential to our collective success, that doesn’t mean you have to dance every time the band plays. Not every opportunity is a good one. Mastering the strategic use of ‘No’ requires a basic level of self-awareness and a desire to evaluate every opportunity that presents itself. If you are willing to slow down your process to engage in this act of intentional evaluation it can revolutionize the way you approach business & life. LIFE & LIVING

It is hard not to suffer from illness anxiety disorder also referred to as health anxiety when each click of the mouse leads you to a news story about an illness or an alarming new study. With continuous medical research and findings, this can perpetuate health anxiety. Never before have laypeople had so much health information at their fingertips 24/7. What happens when this becomes an obsession and one is routinely convinced he/she is suffering from the “disease du jour?” We turned to Board Certified NYC Internist and Gastroenterologist Dr. Niket Sonpal and New York-based Neuropsychologist, Dr. Sanam Hafeez, for a better understanding of the signs and treatment for health anxiety. According to Dr. Sonpal, the following are signs that you may be too worried about your health and wellness:

Frequent Doctor Visits

Dr. Sonpal recalls the same patient coming in regularly asking him to “check this lump on my neck,” “is the color of my tongue normal?” “Listen to my heart, I think it beats too fast… Those with health anxiety are consumed by the uncertainty of medicine and fearful that the disease is, in fact, inside them. If you find yourself “visiting” doctors regularly and you are found to be healthy, you may have health anxiety that requires the attention of a therapist not a physician.

Incessantly Online

From a medical standpoint, Google can be a great tool if used correctly. “For those with health anxiety, Google is like crack-cocaine,” says Dr. Sonpal. There is always a disease or a symptom listed online that they can correlate to themselves. Health anxiety sufferers tend to be more obsessive and convince themselves that if they feel something or see something on their body, it is always the worst-case scenario.

Avoidance

As a result of the overwhelming fear of getting an illness, individuals suffering from health anxiety may avoid certain places or activities that could potentially pose a health risk. A study conducted by Harvard Medical School states that an “avoidant group was found to have higher levels of symptom severity, functional impairment, and anxiety, as well as lower quality of life.” From these results, we can link avoidance to some of the characteristics of illness anxiety patients. If it’s flu season, the health anxiety patient may avoid airplanes, movie theatres or other enclosed crowded public areas where they feel germs are more likely to spread. This gives them a false sense of security from illness.

Repetitive Body Checks

Most individuals might not notice a bruise on their leg that occurred from a minor fall a few days earlier. Still, individuals with health anxiety analyze their entire body for signs of illness. The constant body checks often result in the mind being more likely to notice subtle changes that many people would not see. Another effect of health anxiety can be seen in obsessing over a specific organ in the body and repeatedly demanding that area be checked.

Total Avoidance of Doctors

Juxtaposed to the patient who visits doctors all the time, is the person who is so deathly afraid of finding out something is wrong, that they skip important medical visits like yearly physicals, mammograms, gynecology visits, dental visits etc. For this group of people, this is dangerous. By the time something is caught, it can be at an advanced stage. Dr. Sanam Hafeez provides insight on how to manage and what steps to take to move forward:

Find a Physician Who Understands That You This Anxiety:

Find a physician who you can confide in, and confess, “I have health anxiety.” This will enable the physician to treat you more effectively from a physical and mental health standpoint.

Stop Googling

In the age of health blogs, DIYS, and self-diagnosis tutorials, the internet is filled with erroneous information that can add to medical anxiety. Staying offline provides individuals with the ability to prevent the constant checking and worrying that increases their anxiety.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

C.B.T. breaks down unrealistic or unhelpful thoughts and encourages patients to replace them with more rational ideas. They can then learn to cope more realistically with anxiety-provoking situations. The therapy has been shown to remain effective in reducing symptoms of health anxiety for at least a year, and if needed, its benefit can be reinforced by a brief refresher.

Meditation

For individuals who want to try to manage their health anxiety on their own, meditation is advised. Health anxiety tends to stem from the lack of control over your body, which can lead to obsession over our health. Meditation allows individuals to connect with themselves while being able to manage their stress. This relaxation technique helps ease overall anxiety and additionally provides better coping mechanisms for improving your overall functioning.

Top Tips to Transition

Back to Work After Baby

any new parents spend hours preparing for the arrival of a new baby – reading books, seeking professional advice and consulting friends and family. However, in focusing on birth, they may not get to prepare for other big milestones, like the transition back to work.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more women are returning to work than ever before – more than 70% of women with children under 18 are in the labor force. However, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest new mothers may not be getting the support they need from health care providers, family members and employers to meet their breastfeeding goals. “Parenthood is complicated on its own,” said Melissa Gonzales, executive vice president of the Americas for Medela LLC. “Adding in a full workload is something that many new mothers take on within weeks after birth. With nearly two-thirds of moms going back to work after baby, there is a clear need to better the return-to-work transition for mothers in workplaces across America. There are easy ways for employers to simplify that process so parents don’t have to choose between returning to work and continuing to provide breast milk to their babies.” Whether you are preparing for maternity leave, about to return to work after a baby or have already made the transition, the experts at Medela recommend considering these important workplace qualities: Time and space. Employers are required to provide reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for one year after the child’s birth. Employers are also required to provide a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public which may be used by an employee to express breast milk. If you are planning to pump, check to see if your office has a private space to do so, and ensure there are accommodations to allow you to properly clean and sanitize your breast pump. Travel considerations. If you are required to travel for work, look into your company’s existing policy on breast milk shipping and storage. With more women in the workforce, some companies include breast milk shipping as a benefit for women who have recently given birth who may need to travel.

Supportive resources. Some companies provide educational resources about continuing to breastfeed while working full-time. Ask if your employer provides resources to help you navigate the demands of breastfeeding, or if it provides access to virtual on-demand support such as a lactation consultant. See if your employer can connect you to another mom or parent who can help you or offer advice as you make the transition. Other accommodations. As breast milk feeding becomes increasingly commonplace, companies are implementing policies to better accommodate working parents. Examples include extended parental leave, flexible hours, on-site child care and access to programs such as March of Dimes’ Healthy Babies Healthy Business program and New Moms’ Healthy Returns, a resource for employers created by Medela and Mamava. For more information, please visit NewMomsHealthyReturns.com.

3 Tips for Breastfeeding at Work Returning to work after the birth of a baby demands organization and prioritization. This is especially true for parents who want to continue breastfeeding. Consider these tips when planning the transition: 1. Know your legal rights. Educate yourself on your federally protected rights so you can take a stand if your rights aren’t respected. Employers in the U.S. are required to provide breastfeeding moms with a private place and reasonable break time to pump. 2. Bring a backup. Consider keeping a spare breast pump kit in your car or at your office, just in case you find yourself without the parts you need to pump, like storage bags. You may even consider an extra breast pump to eliminate the hassle of carrying one back and forth. 3. Reduce unnecessary stressors. Stress can affect your milk supply and make pumping more difficult. It can be a challenge to manage all the stressors, but finding a space at work that feels calm and peaceful can make a difference. Make signs so you’re not interrupted, and schedule time on your calendar so colleagues know you’re not available.

asterClass, the platform that makes it possible for anyone to learn from the best, announced today that decorated prima ballerina Misty Copeland will teach ballet. Credited with both broadening the audience for classical ballet and invigorating the art form with a renewed energy, Copeland’s MasterClass will offer an intimate look at how she’s navigated challenges throughout her life and career to defy boundaries and become American Ballet Theatre’s first African American female principal dancer. Now available exclusively at MasterClass. com, students can subscribe for unlimited access to all new and existing classes of 70+ instructors through the All-Access Pass. MasterClass categories include leadership, cooking, photography, writing, performance, and much more. “Misty has single handedly transformed ballet,” said David Rogier, co-founder and CEO of MasterClass. “In her MasterClass, she not only teaches her balance of craft and artistry, but she also brings us into her world, sharing the stories that have made her the athlete and artist she is today.” In 2015, Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in American Ballet Theatre’s 75-year history. She has been an advocate for diversity and, in 2014, President Barack Obama appointed her to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. She was named one of TIME’s 100 most influential people, and later interviewed by President Obama for TIME and Essence magazines to discuss race, gender, achievement and creating opportunity for young people. She is an advocate and volunteer for the Boys & Girls Club of America, where she first learned ballet, as well as an ambassador for MindLeaps, a dance-centered nonprofit providing vocational training to at-risk youth in post-conflict and developing countries. She was recently featured as the lead ballerina in Disney’s “The Nutcracker and The Four Realms.”

“As a mentor, it’s important to me to set a positive example for athletes and artists and show that with the right work ethic, dreams are possible,” said Copeland. “I hope students walk away from my MasterClass with a simple way of approaching ballet technique. But, more importantly, what it takes to be confident, to accept who you are and embrace who you want to be in the future.” Dancers and performers of all kinds will learn more deeply how they can embody characters, tell stories through movement, and own a stage with a dynamic presence Copeland’s MasterClass offers an intimate look at ballet artistry and technique, and diversity and inclusion in the world of classical ballet and her journey to becoming a principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre. In her class, Copeland will reveal the technical transformation she’s worked on for the past year, how to work with different choreographers, the value of seeking guidance from mentors and how working with Prince resulted in a lifechanging moment for her as an artist. Through detailed technical instruction and a 120-degree view, members will watch Misty perform a real-time solo variation from Swan Lake, as well as a partner variation with American Ballet Theatre soloist Calvin Royal III as they dance the White Swan Pas de Deux together for the first time. Misty will also break down a series of stationary and movement exercises at the barre, including plié and tendu, temps lié and, in a more advanced demo, rond de jambe. Misty will also share her hopes for preserving a legacy that empowers inclusion in ballet and encourages members to be a part of the conversation around diversity to help change the perception of what a ballet dancer should be. Copeland’s MasterClass joins the 70+ classes taught by world-renowned instructors on cooking, photography, writing, performance, and much more. abc carpet & home announces an exhibition of the largest, museum-quality quartz crystal clusters found in nature. Showcased in abc’s holiday windows, these naturally occurring mineral formations feature exceptional clarity, size, and shape. They range from 150 pounds to 1300 pounds each, with the largest measuring nearly five feet across, four feet wide, and three feet deep. December 2019. Crystal exhibit holiday windows at abc carpet & home at 888 Broadway. Quartz is believed by many cultures to have healing and harmonizing properties, connecting the body to the mind. “The colors and high frequencies of these stones serve to illuminate any sacred space, including the ones within ourselves,” said co-founder of abc, Paulette Cole. “They are a reminder of Mother Earth and the gem within her.” The crystals were sustainably and ethically sourced from the Zigras Mine in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas by Avant Mining, the largest quartz crystal mining company in the world.

Other specimens from this discovery are now part of geology collections at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the American Museum of Natural History, among others. The exhibition is at abc through January and select stones are available for purchase. For more information, please visit www.abchome.com.

“J.M.W. Turner: Quest for the Sublime”

The Frist Art Museum presents J.M.W. Turner: Quest for the Sublime, an exhibition of extraordinary oil paintings, luminous watercolors, and evocative sketches by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), a central figure in the Romantic movement widely recognized as Britain’s greatest painter and among the most highly regarded landscape painters in Western art. Selected from Tate’s Turner Bequest and organized in cooperation with Tate, the exhibition will make its sole U.S. appearance in the Frist’s Ingram Gallery from February 20 through May 31, 2020.

Long admired for his ingenuity, originality, and passion, Turner strove to convey human moods and the feeling of awe aroused by nature’s immensity and power—its palpable atmospheres, pulsating energy, the drama of storms and disasters, and the transcendent effect of pure light. With approximately 75 works, the exhibition conveys highlights in the British painter’s career from the 1790s to the late 1840s, from dizzying mountain scenes and stormy seascapes to epic history paintings and mysterious views of Venice. The Romantic movement of the late 18th- through mid-19th centuries arose in response to the Enlightenment emphasis on reason over emotion. “For Turner, psychological expression and the liberation of the imagination were of paramount importance,” says David Blayney Brown, senior curator, 19th-century British art, Tate Britain. “He achieved these goals in images of the landscape that evoked human moods by portraying extreme

contrasts of intense light and gloomy clouds, dramatic topographies, and energetic brushstrokes.” Turner portrays climatic events not only as compelling forces by themselves, but also as settings and metaphor for historical and modern dramas. “Mountains and sea show the world in motion: the glacial creep of geological change in the Alps, the sudden fall of a rock propelled by an avalanche, the changing appearance of Mont Rigi according to time and weather, the swell and heave of the sea,” says Brown. Societal and technological changes are captured as well, with images of steamships and other suggestions of industry signaling the forthcoming machine age. The exhibition also includes elemental images of sea and sky, painted late in Turner’s life, which appear nearly abstract. The concept of the Sublime was central to Romanticism. “As industrialization progressed, people gradually began to develop a longing for the awe-inspiring power and beauty of untouched nature and natural forces. Turner was able to cater to this interest in his landscape paintings,” says Brown.

Organized thematically, the exhibition begins by examining Turner’s early aptitude at landscape painting while attending the Royal Academy Schools. Works in the section show his masterly adaptation of early influences and the first instances of what would become a lifelong habit of summer touring across Europe to make sketches and studies, which he would later make into studio paintings. The next sections include Turner’s first impressions of the mountains, glaciers, and lakes of the Swiss Alps. “Turner’s early scenes of Switzerland and Italy are often somber or stormy in mood and coloring, reflecting a region that was as unstable politically as it was in its geology and climate,” says Brown. “In later works, he communicates a sense of rapture and harmony that may be related to the return of peace to Europe after the Napoleonic Wars.” Other sections provide insight into Turner’s process and working methods by exploring sketchbook studies, works in progress, and watercolors at various stages of completion. The exhibition concludes with a section devoted to Turner’s fascination with the sea. “As time passes, there is a progression from a more substantial, three-dimensional style to one that is more impressionistic and less solid,” says Brown. “In these often-unfinished paintings, Turner stripped away subject and narrative to capture the pure energy of air, light, and water.” For more information, please visit www.fristartmuseum.org.

Last Chance to See Manet and Modern Beauty at Getty Center Museum The highly acclaimed exhibition Manet and Modern Beauty closes January 12, 2020.

Manet and Modern Beauty explores for the first time in a major museum exhibition Édouard Manet’s (1832-1883) last years, after his rise to notoriety in the 1860s and the formal launch of the Impressionist movement in the early 1870s. The exhibition features more than 90 works of art, including an impressive array of genre scenes, still lifes, pastels, and portraits of favorite actresses and models, bourgeois women of his acquaintance, his wife, and his male friends. Manet died at the age of 51 in 1883, after a long and painful illness. Declining health forced him to adjust his working habits: during the last six or seven years of his life his output was generally more intimate in both scale and subject, focusing on fashionable scenes of Parisian life and the stylish women, and sometimes men, of his acquaintance. Too often dismissed as superficial by critics, these later works provide valuable testimony to Manet’s elegant social circle and suggest a radical new alignment of modern art with fashionable femininity while recording the artist’s unapologetic embrace of beauty and visual pleasure in the face of death. Manet and Modern Beauty is curated by Getty curators Scott Allan and Emily Beeny, and Gloria Groom, chair of European Painting and Sculpture and David and Mary Winton Green Curator at the Art Institute of Chicago. It has been co-organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago, and is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Also, be sure not to miss Drinking in the Past: The Intoxicating Art of Impressionism on Wednesday, January 8 and Friday, January 10, 2020. French cafe and bar culture inspired discourse, drinking, and the subject matter for many Impressionist works of art. Join Maite Gomez-Rejon (Artbites) in an exploration of the multilayered history of Édouard Manet’s late-19th-century Paris. Then, raise a glass to Manet and discover four fabulous champagnes selected by Ian Blackburn (wineLA). Tickets $75; ages 21 and over. Complimentary parking.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Getty Publications released a catalog of the same name. Featuring nearly 300 illustrations and nine essays by both established and emerging Manet scholars, the publication Manet and Modern Beauty brings a diverse range of approaches to bear on a little- studied area of this major artist’s oeuvre. The presentation in Los Angeles is made possible with major support from Elizabeth and Bruce Dunlevie. It is sponsored by City National Bank and generously supported by Ellen and David Lee and Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Holmes Tuttle. T H E E V O LV E J A N U A R Y 2 0 2 0

Gauguin Portraits’, described by The Sunday Times as ‘the show of the year’ and ‘original and brilliant’ by the Telegraph. This is the first-ever exhibition devoted to the portraits of Paul Gauguin (1848–1903). Filmed in Tahiti, France, the Marquesas Islands and the UK by award-winning producer-director Patricia Wheatley (Pompeii Live, Hokusai from the British Museum), the documentary explores Gauguin’s extraordinary – and often problematic – artistic achievement, with commentary from his descendants, contemporary artists and world experts. The film examines Gauguin’s legacy not only through the lens of art history, but also those of gender and post-colonial politics, reassessing his treatment of young indigenous women and his role in 19th century French colonialism. The exhibition private view is led by co-curator Christopher Riopelle, who says, “I think of Gauguin as a great artist for his formal inventiveness, for the richness of content in his art. At the same time, he has become a focus for contemporary issues. We can’t help but think about the treatment of women and girls, of his other bad behavior. It means that he’s very much alive for us.” CineLife Entertainment’s Executive Vice President, Bernadette McCabe adds, “We’re thrilled to give art enthusiasts the opportunity to see this exhibition and present a new film that celebrates this extraordinary artist while not shying away from the challenging aspects of his achievement.”

Do You See What I See?

Images Courtesy of Anthony Mastromatteo / Rehs Contemporary

Where is the line between reality and our perception? That is the question Anthony Mastromatteo poses to those who view his works. As did the trompe l’oeil masters that came before him, Mastromatteo forces us to examine what exactly it is we are looking at… Magritte may frame it in the likes of “Is this a pipe, or merely an image of a pipe?” Perhaps we take it one step further and simply state we are looking at paint on a canvas, though arranged in such a way that it invokes a thought. In the plainest of ways, Mastromatteo wants his viewers to know they are looking at paint. His supersized trompe l’oeil renderings of comics taped to stark yet vibrant backdrops are so meticulously developed, at first glance you may think you’re looking at an old paper comic taped to a panel. Mastromatteo plays with our perception by selectively employing the use of heavy-handed brushstrokes to expose his illusion; a technique that permeates his work regardless of subject or scale. 62 T H E E V O LV E J A N U A R Y 2 0 2 0

|

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

Conversely, in the most complex of ways, Mastromatteo implores viewers to realize they are looking at something so much more than paint on a canvas or letters on a page… we are observing ideas. Mastromatteo’s works, both written word and visual, convey thoughtful and reasoned messages, from the most mundane to the most extraordinary. Take for instance his word/image work Advent, which features the words “wait” and “weight” while pairing them alongside an image of a pocket-watch supported by the watch’s hands. While the term advent traditionally refers to a time of waiting in the weeks leading up to Christmas, we can simply understand this as waiting for something important. Mastromatteo cleverly juxtaposes the words to signify the weight of waiting for the right moments in life, and the pressure that comes along with being ready for those moments, while visually depicting the “weight” of time.

Meaning runs deep throughout Mastromatteo’s entire body of work; one could even make the argument he’s a modern-day philosopher. His painting, A City Upon a Hill, prominently features Superman flying before the New York skyline. As Mastromatteo puts it, “the image brought to mind a sermon by John Winthrop near the beginning of the Massachusetts Bay Colony ‘how this new land would represent a beacon… a shining city upon a hill… extolling all the liberties not found in the Old World they had just left.’” The 1970s reference used for the work notably, and obviously, features a historical New York skyline in the distance, conjuring a very peculiar feeling. On one hand, we have an iconic Superhero representing Truth, Justice, and the American Way; particularly an immigrant who in many ways symbolizes hope. At the same time, the twin towers, still present in the image, evoke this sense of extreme vulnerability and signify a turning point in American culture, particularly how we view immigrants. The sentiment of the image is not the sentiment of our time; it forces us to consider how the world we live in has changed and if the ideals this country was founded on still are present in our society today. Whether a comic, a poem or simply the tip of a pencil, Anthony Mastromatteo challenges us to truly understand what we are looking at. Perhaps it is just some paint on a canvas, and it could just be a pipe, but maybe, just maybe it is something more than that. A diverse collection of works by Anthony Mastromatteo will be on view at Rehs Contemporary from December 16th, 2019 through January 15th, 2020.

Blackford has found a way for her art to transcend the canvas to become something much more versatile; she’s transferred her original, unique artworks onto throw pillows by individually hand-painting fabric and using artisans in South Carolina to hand sew them into the perfect gift. Each pillow measures 24” x 24” in her HARRISON HOME COLLECTION. The pillows feature hand-painted acrylic paint on fabric with a burlap fringe, accented with a colored cording outline. The pillows retail for $185.00 USD. A down insert is included with each pillow. Blackford also hand-paints the signature tag! “My pillows are original pieces of art in themselves,’’ said Blackford. “Each hand-painted pillow is just as unique as my canvas paintings.” Blackford’s use of energetic colors and bright hues stems from her love for the Lowcountry of South Carolina. She found her home, and inspiration, in Charleston, famed for its numerous churches, beautiful landscapes, and stunning architecture. Her art captures scenes and colors of Charleston’s row houses sitting daintily along the Battery or the feelings of warmth the sun brings as one strolls along Folly Beach looking for seashells. Treasured in homes, art galleries, and boutiques across the United States, Blackford’s throw pillows would bring a smile to its recipient! 65 T H E E V O LV E J A N U A R Y 2 0 2 0

berjey, the industry leader in women’s lingerie and sleepwear, is proud to be named “Designer of the Year 2020” by the Salon International de la Lingerie, the leading global show in the intimate apparel and swimwear market. Eberjey will be awarded for the uncompromising elegance of its designs in Paris on Jan. 18, the first day of the trade show.

“It is an honor to be recognized for our distinction and importance in the industry,” says Ali Mejia, Eberjey Co-Founder & Creative Director. “We saw a void in the market and built a brand that would give women the opportunity to be comfortable and confident in their own skin – a complete departure from the oversexualized fantasy brands that were popular at the time.” Since its launch in 1996, the Miami-based brand has cultivated a steadfast focus on comfort and the power of softness, self-care and natural beauty. Changing how women shopped for intimate apparel, Eberjey was at the forefront of the shift in consumer mindset, ultimately pioneering a new vision of lingerie and sleepwear. In an era of push-up bras and G-strings, Ali Mejia and Mariela Rovito wanted to create products that supported authentic expression of self and sensuality. They set out to create everyday lingerie that allowed women to simply be themselves. The brand’s bralettes and briefs took off with their barely-there but supportive qualities. It was Eberjey’s

newly defined degree of comfort that began gaining international recognition. The brand went on to revolutionize sleep as we know it with its classic sleeping pajama cut in a signature, buttery-soft modal. The Gisele PJ elevated sleepwear into a fashion category, inspiring the brand’s founders to expand the range soon after, offering a full line of lingerie, pajamas, loungewear, resort wear and mini. Its now-iconic silhouettes made in the softest fabrics encourage women to feel at home and slip into a relaxed state of mind. Event organizer Eurovet commends Eberjey for its support of unique beauty, along with its “Giving PJ” initiative, which furthers global reforestation efforts by planting a tree for every set sold in partnership with One Tree Planted. The female-founded brand can be found at premier retailers worldwide such as Bloomingdale’s, Net-a-Porter, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Selfridges, top lingerie and ready-to-wear boutiques and in its four brick-and-mortar stores in the US. f you are like many people, your winter wardrobe requires a bit of extra care. Between fine cashmere sweaters, favorite woolen outerwear and your snazziest cocktail attire, your special care garments should look as crisp at the end of the season as they do today. Unfortunately, winter often brings with it slush, mud, salt and other threats to fabrics. To protect your winter wear affordably, consider the following tips:

• Be smart about footwear: On wet or slushy days, tuck pants into durable, waterproof boots. Any delicate footwear should be brought along in a waterproof bag and changed into at your destination -- or protected by waterproof shoe covers. • Use at-home dry cleaning: Many winter items carry tags that say “dry clean only” or will shrink when washed. Slash dry cleaning expenses up to 90 percent and skip the hassle and harsh chemicals by opting for at-home dry cleaning. Using your own dryer and the right product, you can safely and thoroughly clean your special care clothes at home without experiencing fading, shrinking or stretching. In the case of Dryel -- which works in as little as 15 minutes for a quick refresh and in 30 minutes for a deep clean -- the heat of the dryer activates a cleaning solution that removes body soils and odors from clothes, and a fabric protection bag maintains the optimal balance of cleaning agents and heat, allowing the steam to work through the clothes, and then slowly vent vapors out of the bag and dryer. This is a convenient, cost-effective way to treat such gear as sweaters, jeans, hats, suits and more. • Fight stains immediately: The more quickly you deal with stains, the better, so be prepared with a stain pen wherever you go, and, try to launder items that have been soiled as soon as possible. A stain pen, such as the kind provided by Dryel, can also be used at home to pre-treat garments before cleaning them. • Know when to hang vs. fold: A big part of keeping winter clothes looking good as new is knowing how to store each item. While suit jackets, most dresses and anything that wrinkles easily should be hung (never on wire hangers), sweaters and knitwear, as well as anything stretchy that could lose its shape should be folded. With proper care, you can protect your clothing from all of winter’s most common wardrobe woes. For more information, please visit dryel.com.

oday, Barton Perreira announced a global licensing agreement with EON Productions for the 25th installment of the James Bond franchise, No Time To Die, as the eyewear partner featured in the film.

Barton Perreira will use the legendary 007 logo on three sunglass styles, the exact frames worn by the principal characters in the film. Debuting in December, the Barton Perreira x 007 inspired collection will include the return of three distinguishable styles including: • Joe: a polished black classic rectangular style frame with mineral glass lenses • Norton: a polished tortoise round P3 frame with keyhole bridge • Courtier: a sleek titanium and matte finish acetate aviator “When thinking about how to dress James Bond in this latest film, I knew that everything about his look had to be instantly iconic and definitive. We chose pieces that are going to withstand the test of time as a classic, while also very much being steps ahead of the current moment. Each piece needed to be what I like to call the ‘answer,’” said Suttirat Anne Larlarb, costume designer of No Time To Die. “When Barton Perreira sunglasses were suggested, they immediately ticked all the boxes of what a number of our Bond looks required – and across a variety of settings and circumstances in the story, they were indeed the answer.” The Joe and Norton frames will come with a certificate of authenticity card as well as custom branded 007 sunglass case, cleaning cloth and sleek, black carrying case. GET YOUR GLOW ON Photo by Aleksandar Pasaric

There’s nothing sexier than the contrast of sun-kissed skin against the vibrant fashions that are in for summer. Unfortunately, the sun can be damaging to the skin and can cause premature aging and cancer. Here are easy ways to keep the glow the rest of the summer without hitting the beach or the tanning bed:

Exfoliate

Exfoliation is a great way to give a glow to the skin, get rid of dry skin to reveal bright, healthy skin underneath. A few great body scrubs to try are LaROCCA Cellular Gold Revitalizing Sugar Polish and 100% Pure Body Scrub. 100% Pure Body Scrubs contain no synthetic chemicals, no artificial fragrances, no preservatives, no alcohol or any other toxins, come in a variety of scents, and chocked full of fruits acids to health slough away dry skin. LaROCCA uses fruit extracts, raw sugar, and purple corn to buff away the dull skin and bring out the glow. And it doesn’t hurt that they both smell delicious! Use a scrub 2-3 times a week to keep the skin clean soft and smooth. It helps your self-tan or faux tan products to go on more evenly and last longer!

Moisturise

There are great products on the market now that will not only add moisturize to your skin, but enhance your glow. Caudalie Divine Oil contains four natural oils—grape oil, extra-virgin argan oil, extra-virgin hibiscus oil, and sesame oil, and will add a healthy sheen to the skin. LORAC Island Tantalizer® Creamy Body Oil hydrates, protects and adds a touch of bronzy sheen. Vitamins A, C, E, coconut and jojoba oil, along with an irresistible coconut vanilla fragrance makes this a must have. In the evening, Amazing Grace Firming Body Emulsion is a toning body moisturizer that helps to purify, moisturize, and revitalize dry, aged, or wrinkled skin. Bliss Naked Body Butter restores moisture to even the most rough and scaly skin and protects skin against free radicals. It softens and hydrates skin without feeling greasy. Properly moisturized skin will keep your skin looking youthful and prevent your tan from being blotchy.

Tanning

Pretend Tan Bronzing Mousse looks good on all skin types and gives you a bit of color while you waiting for DHA to work. It is odorless, paraben free, doesn’t streak and dries quickly. Pretend Tan comes with a mitt, so you don’t have to worry about having gloves around to apply it. La Mer ‘The Face & Body Gradual Tan’ Lotion combines the benefits of Crème De La Mer with a self-tanner that is for the face and body. You will need to have a pair of gloves to apply so you don’t end up with discolored palms, but the results are worth it. A beautiful, natural looking tan with no orange! The La Mer can also be used to maintain an existing tan by applying the product every few days.

Faux Glow

If you need a little help in the color department and want instant gratification, Juicy Couture Liquid Bronze Body Bronzer gives believable color and sexy sheen; or try LORAC Tantalizer Body Bronzing Luminizer. Comes in two great believable shades, fast drying and transferresistant!

Fixing Self-Tan

If you do encounter a bit of blotchiness, using a scrub, lemon or witch hazel over the blotchy area with help to even out any streaking. If you have an orange self-tanner mishap, soaking in baking soda for an hour will and use a scrub will erase this mishap. Beauty Trend 2020: Face Fitness If you’ve wondered what the beauty secrets and trends for 2020 are, here is our take on it. One of the biggest fads next year are going to be different tools and applications for what we like to call face fitness. It tightens, brightens and firms your skin and works wonders. What are we going to see on the market and online this year?

Face rollers

These are already known but there are many new different types coming out. These face rollers can be rose quartz or jade rollers and are made out of stones. But they can also have metal ends which do not roll and purely massage the forehead, T-zone and eye area. They reduce puffiness and make the skin tight and firm. So better schedule your weekly face workouts as well as your body exercise cause it’s a real thing!

Cups

They are quite original in the fact that there have been cups, silicone or others, used in massage studios for reducing cellulite on the thighs and legs. However, now we see that there are also cups for the face – they are used the same way and the idea is to reduce wrinkles, puffiness,

and revitalize the skin. The sensation is not painful, it’s just tingling because the size of the cups is of course smaller.

After-gym care

Just like when we train our body, we need a special drink to preserve the muscles, the same way we need proper relaxation when we train the face muscles. After reducing the wrinkles and tightening the skin, the face needs to rest. You can achieve that by applying a sleeping eye mask. It’s a cotton mask (see Holy Golightly in Breakfast in Tiffany’s) and the latest fad are self-warming masks that are activated by the touch of skin just after a few seconds.

But unless…

Just like with body workouts, some people can be quite reluctant, due to lack of time or they just don’t want to do it. And in those cases, they go for a plastic surgery or go to a cosmetic studio for a water draining massage. When it comes to your face muscles, there is also an alternative. To get an instant face lift, follow the latest fashion and apply face tape – it’s a special tape with a thin head band that goes around your head - the two ends are stuck to the temples and the eyes instantly become cat-eye shaped. Essential Oils

& Their Natural Powers

An essential oil is a volatile odorant extracted from plants such as flowers, fruits, seeds…by a distillation with water vapour. From perfume to creams, deodorants and make-up, used in the formulation or simply for their aromas, essential oils are often found in cosmetic compositions. In addition to being natural preservatives, their virtues are innumerable, for men, women or children; their perfumes are unique and plural. They all share natural “super powers” in common: antiseptic, antibacterial and moisturizing abilities.

Essential oils and their hair benefits

The types of hair vary enormously from one head to another, but the diversity of the essential oils is even more extensive. For example, the essential oils of sandalwood, sage or rosemary help to take care of dry hair. For oily hair, lavender can be very useful because of its absorbing and regulating properties of sebum. Dandruff problems? The essential oil of bergamot or petit grain can help you hydrate your scalp. Essential oils combine many benefits, it is not necessary to get an essential oil or a product that includes, for each problem. Example: thyme not only has a toning action on the hair but it also enhances the shine. It is also recommended against hair loss.

Essential oils in makeup and manicure care

Essential oils are often used in makeup for their natural scents, which add a pleasant note to the application of products. In addition, their nourishing properties provide skin care in addition to the covering function of makeup, such as the essential oil of myrrh that moisturizes and firms the epidermis and is found in some tinted creams. The same goes for lipsticks: they reinforce the shine while moisturizing the lips. Given their fortifying action, they are also beneficial for the maintenance of nails, such as Ylang-Ylang essential oil or lemon essential oil, which allows them to whiten in addition to fortify.

Essential oils in perfumes

Used in perfumes for centuries, essential oils offer an infinite range of fragrances. From natural and discreet scents to more exotic or pronounced notes, essential oils allow everyone to find the scent that corresponds to them even if some have a more masculine or feminine olfactory character. Vetiver essential oil, for example, is found mostly in compositions addressed to men, while the one derived from vanilla is often more popular with women. Their fundamental role in perfumery has led some perfume companies to launch environmental programs aimed at protecting the plants they come from, such as Givaudan, which wants to secure supplies of patchouli and vetiver from Haiti.

Essential oils for self-made cosmetics

Cosmetics manufacturers are not the only ones who know how to exploit their properties; it is also possible for oneself to compose cosmetics and perfumes from essential oils. Internet tutorials, boxes of several oils, recipes… printed press and the internet are full of guides to prepare them yourself. Nevertheless, the essential oils sold pure in small bottle are not to handle without precaution. A few drops are usually sufficient to achieve the desired effects, while an overdose could be detrimental to health. They are not recommended for pregnant women.

Essential oils, organic and European regulations

An essential oil does not necessarily imply an organic product. Indeed, not all are from nature. Some are artificially made, especially when it comes to getting their odorous qualities. The European Commission also wants to better regulate their manufacturing conditions, traceability, since the DGCCRF (Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control) has made a study denouncing the infringements of producers, and risks that they make consumers incur. Natural products do not mean harmless products. That is why it is imperative to learn about the exact composition of the products, to test them on a small area (avoiding face and private parts), or at best to seek advice from a pharmacist or a doctor, especially if you are sensitive to allergies. 89 T H E E V O LV E J A N U A R Y 2 0 2 0

Orangetheory Fitness has created a highly anticipated device for members to use Apple Watch to track heart rate data during workouts, along with iOS apps for coaches and sales associates to enhance the member experience both in and out of studio. “Member experience has been at the forefront of all that we do since the brand’s inception,” says Dave Long, CEO and Co-Founder of Orangetheory Fitness. “We’re addressing the needs of our members by providing an integration between the workout they do and the technology they use, leading to a seamless fitness experience and healthier life.”

“Apple Watch is designed to help people live a better day by being more active,” said Jay Blahnik, Senior Director of Fitness for Health Technologies at Apple. “With workout tracking, Apple Pay and a new membership program, we are thrilled Orangetheory Fitness is integrating Apple Watch into a comprehensive experience for their customers.”

OTbeat Link

The OTbeat Link is a new, custom-designed small device worn on an Apple Watch band that will give members the ability to sync their Apple Watch directly with the Orangetheory Fitness in-studio heart rate monitoring system. Orangetheory Fitness learned that the most common request was to use Apple Watch in class. Now, not only will members be able to view metrics in real time in class with an Apple Watch, they’ll also be able to see their Orangetheory Fitness workouts afterward in the Activity app, and Orangetheory Fitness workouts will contribute to closing Apple Watch Activity Rings. As a part of Orangetheory Fitness’s new technology debut, the brand has also created a version of the Orangetheory Fitness app for Apple Watch to accompany the OTbeat Link.

Premier+ membership

Along with the OTbeat Link, Orangetheory Fitness is debuting the new Premier+ membership, which includes a bundled offering of the OTbeat Link, tools and incentives for staying active with the OTearn program to help members lead a healthier, more vibrant life. The OTearn program, developed by Vitality Group and modeled after their proven rewards based incentive program, is designed to keep members motivated to achieve their goals and earn rewards in the process. The Premier+ membership will be available starting today in two New York City locations, Soho and Astor Place, and will expand to all locations in Q2 2020. Purchase of the standalone OTbeat Link will begin to roll out in Q1 2020 at a price of $129.

OTassist and OTcoach apps

To streamline elements of the in-studio experience and provide seamless interactions between staff, coaches and members, Orangetheory Fitness has also developed two new iOS apps: OTassist and OTcoach. The OTassist app allows Orangetheory sales associates to easily navigate class schedules, view member milestones and check in members for an upcoming class, creating a frictionless, tailored experience that’s also paperless and deskless. OTcoach will empower Orangetheory coaches in providing members with even more customized attention by allowing the coaches to lead aspects of the class (such as music and timing) more successfully from Apple Watch. Overall, OTcoach will enable coaches to spend 10% more time with members, equating to 7.2 million hours of additional guidance and inspiration across the network of all Orangetheory studios annually. As the leader in heart rate based interval training and one of the world’s fastest-growing fitness franchise brands, Orangetheory Fitness provides its members with more energy, more drive and more health through a unique trifecta of science, coaching and technology. Each Orangetheory Fitness class, taught by a highly trained coach, is an hour-long, science-backed, technology-tracked, full-body workout that helps members elevate their heart rate to the “Orange Zone,” which is 84-91 percent of their maximum heart rate. Each Orangetheory Fitness studio has treadmills, water rowing machines, mini bands and TRX® suspension unit systems as well as plenty of free weights and benches. Coaches conduct personalized group sessions designed for approximately 24 participants at a time, an approach complemented by technology advancements. Through its game-changing technology, Orangetheory Fitness advances its mission by giving members even better tools to capture real-time performance data, measure their overall workout results and set new goals. Samsara Luggage

Unveils Disruptive Tracking Technology at Consumer Electronics Show As travelers continue to experience the hassles of lost and mishandled bags, Samsara Luggage plans to unveil the next generation of Samsara Luggage products that will include an IoT tracking solution, offering consumers the most accurate location data for their smart-case and complying with all applicable regulations. This revolutionary tracking technology will be presented at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES). This innovative technology was designed to improve the travel experience by providing consumers with a tracking feature that provides the most accurate location data currently on the market. The technology functions in a manner similar to the GPS tracking offered by most ride-hailing companies, and is designed to provide real-time location tracking for a frustration-free consumer experience. According to Sita, the leading provider of baggage management solutions, 24.8 million bags were “mishandled” in 2018, despite the major airlines’ continued efforts to address this issue. Lost luggage derails travelers and causes unforeseen added costs and loss of time. The Washington Post reported that “When luggage disappears, passengers are often pulled into a baffling world of forms, phone lines with prerecorded messages and endless waits.” According to Atara Dzikowski, Co-founder and CEO of Samsara Luggage, “Consumers no longer need to rely on tracking methods that only offer estimated location services. Samsara is the first to bring a precise location data technology that complies with all regulations to the smart travel marketplace.” “Samsara is a unique and visionary company,” says Kathy Ireland, Chair, CEO and Chief Designer of kathy ireland® Worldwide, who joined Samsara’s Board of Advisors in July 2019. “Samsara continues to develop the best travel technology on the market, providing global travelers with a state-of-the-art travel experience. This new and disruptive tracking technology aims to minimize the aggravation and hassle associated with lost luggage, which many travelers experience. As Samsara continues to focus on strategic solutions for the tech-savvy traveler, we look forward to bringing our customers the most cutting-edge, smart, luxury luggage on the market today,” adds Ireland. Earlier this year, MI VI, a brand by kiWW® founded by Kathy Ireland® and Tommy Meharey, entered a licensing partnership Samsara Luggage Inc. to introduce an exclusive collection of smart luggage products designed for the modern traveler. umo Citrus, one of the world’s largest and sweetest mandarins, makes its highly-anticipated return to stores across the country in January. Celebrated for its incredible taste and distinctive looks, the most beloved fruit of the decade is back and juicier than ever. For those searching for healthy (or just plain delicious) snack options in the New Year, look for the Sumo Citrus’ signature ‘top knot’ in fruit aisles nationwide. You won’t find Sumo Citrus piled up in the orange bin, however, this is a fruit that demands a place of its own. Sumo Citrus sets itself apart from standard oranges in many ways. Starting with incredibly sweet taste. The experience of eating a Sumo Citrus is unlike anything else. It’s easy-to-peel, seedless and doesn’t make a mess—making it great for healthy, on-the-go snacking. So, where does Sumo Citrus come from? The history of Sumo Citrus is unlike any other fruit in the world. The legendary seedless variety was originally cultivated in Japan in the 1970’s by a grower who set out to develop the perfect citrus fruit. It became known as the “dekopon” in Japan in reference to its distinctive top knot, and has been prized by citrus lovers ever since. Only expert growers who know Sumo Citrus’ unique characteristics are able to cultivate it, pampering the fruit for eight months of the year for fans who have been eagerly awaiting the season. A handful of dedicated farms in California tend to and supply the US with this notoriously difficult-to-grow fruit. From tree to store, each Sumo Citrus is gently handled with significant care. They are hand-pruned, ripened on the tree, harvested in small totes instead of large bins and ride in special air-ride trailers so their delicate skin isn’t bruised. Each Sumo Citrus that makes it to the store is measured for sweetness and passes the highest standards of taste, size and texture. “It’s incredible what they do,” said Rick Johnston, EVP Sales and Marketing for Sumo Citrus. “Each individual grower’s dedication and passion for creating a superior citrus experience is truly inspiring.” “We’re extremely excited for this upcoming Sumo Citrus season and to debut our new look,” continued Johnston, referring to the brand’s refreshed logo and packaging. The new look features vibrant colors and patterns that evoke its Japanese heritage. “There was such a great response to our product last season. The crop this season has exceptional quality, and we look forward to getting them back into the hands of our consumers.” Not only is it delicious, Sumo Citrus is also a nutritious snack option. Each fruit is perfectly portioned and packed with vitamin C and fiber to keep you satisfied while also helping to boost your immune system during the cold winter months. Sumo Citrus is also Non-GMO Project Verified. With Sumo Citrus season arriving soon to retailers across the country, try one for yourself and see what all the buzz is about. But be warned, once you’ve tried a Sumo Citrus, going back to standard oranges will be tough. Sumo Citrus is available only four months of each year, from January to April, but somehow the waiting makes it better. Call it big, call it delicious, just don’t call it an orange. How Learning About Wine Can Improve the Way You Drink

The world of wine can sometimes feel intimidating to the uninitiated, but a bit of knowledge about wine from experts can help anyone navigate everyday situations. “Once the basics are demystified, you’ll not only impress friends with your newfound knowledge of wine, you’ll better enjoy what you are drinking,” says wine and Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) influencer, Chelsie Petras of ChelLovesWine. “Learning basic things like what you do or don’t like in a particular wine can change how you drink and teach you how to drink better!” • Whether you are starting from scratch or have some experience with the subject already, there’s always more to learn, points out Petras, who is sharing three ways that a deeper understanding of wine will improve the way you drink: • Happier Hosting: Smart pairings make both food and wine taste better, and the wrong pairing will do quite the opposite. If you enjoy hosting dinner parties or any get-together, it is helpful to know basic pairings that will impress your guests! • Better Gifting: A bottle of wine makes a good gift when you’re attending a party and don’t know what to bring. By learning more about wine, you will be able to better choose a bottle to bring that is certain to be a crowd pleaser.

• Confident Ordering: A lengthy wine list can be tricky to navigate, and many people shy away from being the one to order. A wine education can transform you from someone who hides behind the menu to being the go-to friend everyone relies on to make the right selection. • So where to turn for instruction? While there are many programs available geared toward those who work in the industry or are looking for professional certification, there are also programs designed by those same education providers targeted at everyday wine enthusiasts and novices. • For example, WSET, the world’s largest provider of wine and spirits qualifications, was originally founded in 1969 for wine and spirits professionals, but has since opened its courses to everyday enthusiasts in an effort to teach them to drink better. Fun, educational courses for novices and the knowledgeable alike are provided on such topics as perfect pairings and deciphering labels. To learn more, visit wsetglobal.com. “Don’t let the idea of learning more about wine intimidate you,” says Petras, who recently served as a brand ambassador at WSET’s Wine Education Week, a global celebration of wine. “A wine education is for anyone who enjoys and is interested in wine.”

Show Your Heart Some Love

W

hile heart disease is a leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, many of the risk factors associated with the condition can be controlled with dietary and lifestyle changes. By centering your meals around better-for-you ingredients and recipes, you can show your heart some extra love.

Consider walnuts, which are a heart-healthy food certified by the American Heart Association. More than 25 years of research shows walnuts may play a key role in heart health. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved one of the first qualified health claims for a whole food, finding that eating 1 1/2 ounces of walnuts per day as part of a low-saturated fat and low-cholesterol diet while not increasing caloric intake may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Additionally, walnuts are the only nut significantly high in omega-3s, with 2 1/2 grams of alphalinolenic acid per ounce. Walnuts can add this essential nutrient to dishes like these American Heart Association Heart-Check Mark certified recipes for Greek Cucumber Walnut Bites and Banana Bread Overnight Oats.
