School History

The History of Loreto education...

Mary Ward, the foundress of the Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was born in 1585 and died in 1645. This young English woman’s passion in life was the education of young girls. Her first school began in St. Omer in France in 1611 and from that time on, the Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary have been providing education at all levels for young girls and women right across the world.

Mary Ward schools arrive in Ireland...

Having been educated in one of Mary Ward’s schools in York, a young Dublin woman named Frances Teresa Ball set up this system of education in Ireland in 1822. The first school of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (known in Ireland as ‘Loreto’) opened in Rathfarnham, Dublin in August of that year. Very quickly Loreto schools were opened all over Ireland.

A religious community and boarding school were first established at 58 Harcourt Street by Frances Teresa Ball in 1833. No. 53 St. Stephen’s Green was purchased as the pupil numbers grew and the school moved from Harcourt Street to the Green on October 6th, 1841. The former townhouse was originally built in 1771 by Gustavus Hume. By 1846 there were 20 boarders and 30 day students in “The Green.”

In 1899, Mother Michael organised University Classes in the Green. No. 54, St. Stephen’s Green, was purchased and that house was allotted to the University Students. From that time forward, the establishment was known as “Loreto College.” The school was further extended when St. Vincent’s Hospital was transferred to Elm Park. It then became possible to buy No. 55.

In 1986 a fire partially destroyed the College and Convent tragically claiming the lives of six Loreto Sisters. The school was temporarily relocated and following extensive work, in 1988 “The Green” was reopened with entire new sections added to the original buildings. Today the school

is located across three buildings 53 - 55 St. Stephen’s Green, with over 550 pupils and more than 70 staff. We continue to follow a wide and varied curriculum to meet the needs of our students in today’s world.

Managing Your Learning

There are three main elements to managing your learning, these being:

1. Setting learning goals and planning your learning

2. Monitoring your progress

3. Reflecting on your learning and progress with a view to learning from past experience.

Learning how to manage yourself and your learning is a key skill for Junior Cycle and it will prepare you for success at Senior Cycle.

Below are links to tools/templates which will help you to manage your learning.

TOP EXAM TIPS

ReadandReread – Read all exam questions carefully, then read them again. The second time round, underline or highlight the key points.

UseTimeWisely – Take note of how many marks are awarded for each question and divide your time accordingly. If you feel you can’t fully answer a question just try it, marks are awarded for attempts and partial answers.

EatforSuccess – Fizzy energy drinks will only boost you for an hour, but by eating slow energy release foods such as porridge with nuts and fruit you will have the energy for a full day of exams.
