Fáilte chuig Pobalscoil na Tríonóide
Welcome to Pobalscoil na Trionoide Pobalscoil na Tríonóide opened its doors in 2006, after the decision had been made to bring the three schools in Youghal together. Since then our population has grown rapidly but our sense of community prevails. With our mission statement at the core of what we do, the characteristic spirit of Pobalscoil na Tríonóide is one of openness and inclusiveness, and where all members of the school community are cherished equally. Our school aims to instil a spirit of intellectual enquiry and academic endeavour in the pupils, fostering in them a desire for participation and challenge. We strive to build individual and compassionate young people. We are committed to the holistic growth of our pupils, and aim to contribute to their Spiritual, Intellectual, Moral, Mental and Physical well-being and development. Past Student Testimonial “My experience in Pobalscoil was something that holds a special place in my heart and allowed me to become the person I am today. My memories of my time there are ones that I cherish deeply and certainly are six years I will never forget. Pobalscoil allowed me to meet the most amazing people and make lifelong friends who even join me in college today. I can’t lie that when I think of Pobalscoil my first thought isn’t an exam or taking notes, but the laughs, smiles, uncontrollable giggles, class banter and corridor chaos that made all those exams that bit easier. Each day with Pobalscoil, I came in with a smile and was guaranteed to come out with a bigger one. Pobalscoil not only created an environment for me to reach my academic
potential, but highlighted talents in other areas, recognizing that one's worth is not defined by a percentage on a page. I really saw this inclusive atmosphere in the array of extracurricular activities offered to me, where I tried my hand at basketball, participated in debating, but most memorably, the singing and music opportunities I was provided with. From singing in choral competitions across the county to performing in the school musical ‘Grease’ in Fifth Year, Pobalscoil brought out the importance music has in my life and what music means to me. Looking back on secondary school, I can say that Pobalscoil allowed me to become the best version of myself and reach my full potential. Pobalscoil is my foundation, it's my stories in college, it's my fondest memories - it's a chapter of my life I’ll never forget.” – Orlaith Curtin, Leaving Certificate Student of 2021.
“I loved my time in Pobalscoil na Trionóide. We developed such a strong sense of community over our six years of learning and growing together and no matter what happened, we always knew there was a friendly face to support us. Pobalscoil gave us so many opportunities, not to learn, not only for our exams, but about ourselves, and gave us all so many amazing opportunities which we are so grateful for, as they made us into the people we are today.” – Eimear Hayes, Leaving Certificate Student, 2021.

An intrinsic element of our pastoral support system is our outstanding guidance department and our school chaplain. •
In Pobalscoil na Tríonóide we have specific guidance counsellors linked with each base class. Our guidance counsellors are integral to the support our students receive personally, vocationally, and academically. Our guidance counsellors equip students with the social, personal and self-management skills they need in order to make effective and informed choices about their lives.

The School Chaplain is a caring faith presence in the school community who is available to all students, staff and parents and their families. The Chaplain accompanies members of the school community on their unique journey through life. The school chapel is available to all members of the school community for quiet time, prayer or reflection.
Further to this, we are very proud of our Student Leaders programme, which links two sixth year students with each first year base class. The Student Leaders play a fundamental role in supporting our first years throughout the year, looking out for them between classes and at recreational times as well as planning events throughout the year to add to their very positive 1st year experience.

Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme LCVP is designed to give a strong vocational dimension to the Leaving Certificate. The programme combines the virtues of academic study with a new and dynamic focus on self-directed learning, enterprise, work and the community. It is a two-year programme, and it is offered as an extra subject here in Pobalscoil na Tríonóide. Young people taking the LCVP have a unique opportunity to develop their interpersonal, vocational and technological skills. These skills are equally relevant to the needs of those preparing for further education, seeking employment or planning to start their own business.
The primary goal of the LCVP is to prepare young people for adult life by ensuring that they are educated in the broadest sense, with an ability to cope and thrive in an environment of rapid change. Participants in the programme are encouraged to develop skills and competencies fundamental to both academic and vocational success. This is further aided by the work experience element of the course. Students of Pobalscoil na Tríonóide are encouraged to be innovative and enterprising while taking responsibility for their own learning and learning from their experiences in the wider school community and beyond.
‘I feel LCVP has benefited me by giving me time to do research on different college courses and the career options of these courses. My IT, organisation and time management skills have all improved because of the portfolio our class had to complete. If I was to pick my subjects for leaving cert again, I would definitely not have chosen another subject instead.’ – 6th Year LCVP Student

“Looking back on my years in this school, I can wholeheartedly say that for me transition year was my favourite of them all. TY, I think, personally helped me to come out of my shell and allowed me to venture into new avenues that hadn’t even come to mind before. TY really allows you to make so many new friends as you go on lots of trips throughout the year and take part in so many activities in school also. I think TY really bring you closer as a group without you even noticing. Having a break from studying for exams is also such a breath of fresh air in TY and allows you to improve on things that you may have struggled with in class in third year. I would definitely recommend TY if you are someone who is willing to get involved in new activites.” – Erin Ahern, 6th Year Student, 2021. 9

I believe It helps you to be organised as it is important to have a good work / play balance. Sport allows you to experience the victories as well as the defeats and therefore prepares you for ups and downs in life. You cannot win all the time but it is important to enjoy trying. It is nice to represent your school at sports. You get to play with your friends while enjoying the benefits of a few hours off.” -Alex Cashman 5th year, who partakes in Athletics, Gaelic Football and Camogie.

Student Leaders The Sixth Year Leaders play an invaluable part in helping the incoming First Years transition from Primary to Secondary education. Whilst this is a very exciting time in these First Years’ lives, it can also be a daunting experience. The Leaders work in partnership with the staff from the very first day of 1st year to ensure that the students are happy and comfortable in their new school. As a group, the Leaders are on hand to support, encourage and advise the First Years in their care. Each class group is assigned two leaders and they provide a friendly port of call for all the questions that may arise during the first few weeks and months. Leaders also help students with their lockers, timetables, books and give the First Years general information about our school. They also organise events throughout the year including movie days, talent shows and end of term celebrations for the whole year group. These events encourage First Years to make friends across the different class groups and to enjoy all aspects of life in Pobalscoil.

Global Citizenship Education GCE is a powerful vehicle through which we can better understand the world we live in and take action to change it as informed global citizens. It is a means of giving a voice to students on issues that matter to them and their peers both here in school and globally. Scoileanna Domhanda atá Eagnaí faoin Domhain World Wise Global Schools Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide has been part of the World Wise Global Schools programme since 2018, with a Student Committee set up in 2020 putting our students at the centre of
the project, empowering them to be leaders of global justice. World Wise Global Schools (WWGS) programme aims to integrate Global Citizenship Education (GCE) into postprimary schools. WWGS strives for a solidarity over charity approach to GCE which means it is not about ‘helping’ others, rather building critical thinking skills and challenging the root causes which allow inequality to continue and standing in solidarity with communities to create change and actively assess our own roles in these inequalities. Ensuring that the voices and stories from people and communities affected by, and tackling injustices, is important.
“I joined the WWGS committee early in 5th year, and immediately got involved in brainstorming ideas to fit into the goals of the committee. It was great to be around so many like-minded people who also wished to take action on the sustainable development goals. I joined the climate action team in which my friend and I decided to set up a Thrift Shop, in order to tackle fast fashion. We repurposed 115 clothing items, which people would have otherwise thrown away. It feels really good to know you’re making even the smallest difference. I’m glad I was part of the committee and took on this project as it taught me a lot and I made some new friends too!” – Tara Flavin, Past Pupil.

Concern Debating In recent years Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide has had great success at national level as part of the Concern Debating programme. Before Lockdown in 2020, our debating team made it to the semi-finals for a second year in a row. IN 2019 we were awarded Best Overall School Participation in Ireland, as well as Best supporting team, with a bus full o energetic supporters going to each debate. We believe it is empowering to engage 14
young people with social justice issues and to give young people the opportunity to express and debate their views and to be heard by their peers. Being part of Concern Debates brings an energy to our school. As part of our journey with both World Wise Global Schools and Concern Debating we continue to challenge the root causes of global injustices including Climate,
Biodiversity and Conservation, Slave Labour, Racism, Migration, LGBTQIA+, Discrimination, Fair Trade, Fast Fashion and Gender Inequalities. Our students have stood in solidarity with communities around the world by raising awareness about each of these issues and undertaking discussions and projects aimed at challenging these issues on a local and global scale.

Our Biodiversity Journey
Pobalscoil na Tríonóide embarked on a journey of promoting Biodiversity in 2019.
We are currently in the early stages of our school Biodiversity project. We have met with, and formed links with, other like-minded organisations in this area - the East Cork Biodiversity Network and the National Biodiversity Data Centre.
Why is Biodiversity important to us here in Pobalscoil na Tríonóide?
Here’s what we are doing right now…
The UN have reported that roughly 1 million plant and animal species are on the verge of extinction and that “the health of ecosystems on which we and all other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever” (UN IPBES May 2019). Global public awareness of these issues has increased recently, aided by campaigners including Greta Thunberg, Extinction Rebellion, and the school student strikes. The Irish government has responded by declaring a Climate Emergency and publishing a Climate Action Plan. In Pobalscoil na Tríonóide we intend to play our part in promoting Biodiversity. There are many benefits to a school Biodiversity project. Increased biodiversity is associated with improved mental health and wellbeing. The learning outcomes of some Junior Cycle subjects, in particular Science, Geography, and CSPE are closely linked with an understanding of climate change and Biodiversity. Finally, we believe that this project will help prepare students to understand and engage with the future challenges of climate change and global food production. 16
