SUBJECT: Engineering
What is this subject all about at Senior Cycle?
Leaving Certificate Engineering is the study of mechanical engineering for students in the senior cycle of post-primary education. Students develop the skills and initiative in the planning, development and realization of technological projects in a safe manner. Practical resourcefulness, creativity and design in the planning and development of technological projects are emphasised. There are two main areas of study: workshop processes, and materials and technology.
Do I have to have studied this subject at Junior Cycle in order to do it at Senior Cycle?
No you do not have to of studied Engineering at Junior Cycle level but it would be an advantage as much of your learning is a follow on from the Junior Cycle course.
Will learning this subject at Senior Cycle be different to what I studied at Junior Cycle?
No, it will not be much different. The detail required will obviously be greater. There will also be more focus on the science of materials and where they come from and we look in greater detail at their properties.

Assessment?
Engineering is assessed at two levels, Ordinary level and Higher level, by means of a written examination, a project and a practical examination.
