Prevent the Issue Use Soap and Tissue!
We can all do our bit to keep ourselves, and others, safe. The trick is to put it into regular practice and simply let it become habit.
Washing Hands Often and Well!
1
4
Wet your hands with warm water and add soap.
Do this for 20 seconds (or sing Happy Birthday twice to yourself)
2
Rub your hands together until the soap lathers.
3
Rub the top of your hands, between your fingers and under your fingernails (popular hiding places!)
5
Rinse your hands under running water.
6
Dry your hands well.
Your Face
Try not to touch your face too much – did you know on average we touch our faces 20 times an hour?
Coughing and Sneezing
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue if you cough or sneeze. Once it’s safe to do so, bin the tissue, and wash your hands. If you don’t have a tissue, coughing or sneezing into your (inner!) elbow is the next best thing.
My strengths and targets What are you good at? What would you like to improve on? People are normally really confident doing the things they are good at and not so confident at the things they wish to improve. In the box below, write down the activities you most enjoy and the activities you want to improve.
I am good at:
I want to improve:
Now, let’s work on what you want to improve this year. You can do this by setting yourself targets. Setting targets helps us to achieve things in life. Use the boxes below to set yourself two targets for the different parts of your life. For example, ‘Learn my maths tables’ for school or ‘Try a new sport and join a team’ for sports.
Family
Friends
Sport and Hobbies
School
When you reach your target, tick the box and say ‘Well Done Me!’

Respecting yourself and others The first and most important thing to learn is how to respect yourself! Then it becomes very easy to respect others. All you have to do is ask yourself this simple question:
Then treat others in the same way. Regard Dignity Praise
Value Listen Understanding
I treat others with dignity and courtesy.
RESPECTFUL WORDS I am considerate of other people’s feelings.
I try hard to solve problems without violence or harsh words.
2
Sensitive
Admire
Appreciate Believe
Patience
I try not to hurt or embarrass anybody. I accept some people are different to me.
Sometimes it can be really difficult to do all of these things. In life, you may not like someone, but remember that you should always respect them as human beings and never hurt or harm anyone.

What to do if you’re being bullied
1
Are you being bullied? Or do you know somebody who's being bullied? If so, you must tell someone what is going on and how you feel. No one can help you if you don’t tell them. Please do! Tell your Teacher
2 Tell someone 3 in your family
Call a helpline
4
Tell your parents
Ignore name-calling and show the bully their comments don't affect you. A bully likes to get a reaction, so don't give them one! Bullies often hurt other people to make themselves feel better. They may be unhappy at home or school. Don’t hit out. You may get hurt or the bully could make it seem like you are the bully. They are the problem - don’t believe what they say and don’t blame yourself. If you need help you can call Childline for free. Just dial 1800 666 666

Na Seanfhocail Seanfhocail are old Irish sayings. Some of them are funny but others are very wise. An bhfuil eolas agat ar na seanfhocail? (Do you know about old sayings?)
Is ait an mac an saol. Life is strange. t. Go n-éirí an bóthar lea Go od luck!

An Old Irish Blessing
12
“May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.”
Tá cluasa fada ar mhuca beaga. Little pigs have long ears.
Healthy Bodies Eating food that is good for your body is important. A healthy diet is all about making choices. Once you start making the right choices when it comes to eating, you’ll get into the habit of eating healthy food. That means you will do it without even thinking about it. Here are some top tips on how to eat healthy!
menu
Eat plenty of brown bread, whole grain cereals, very good potatoes, fresh fruit, vegetables and salads (highfibre foods). Eat or drink at least three of good these every day: milk, cheese, yoghurt, meat, fish, nuts, beans, eggs.
Drinksmall plenty of water. Eat very amounts of foods not good containing fatty oils, butter and sugar.
Drink plenty of water.
Eat smaller amounts more frequently. Five small meals are better than three large ones! 13
TOP TIPS FOR LEARNING
We all learn in our different ways. Here are the three main ways people learn!
SEEING
DOING/ FEELING
HEARING
Do you find it easy to take in information with your eyes?
Do you find you learn best by moving around and doing things?
Do you find you can hear information easier than seeing it?
Top Tips for Learning Use a brightcoloured pen or highlighter to highlight all the new words you come across.
1
Use different senses to help you learn new information: write it down, say it out loud, make an action that describes the word! It may seem silly but it works! See it, Say it, Do it! That’s the key!
2
Create a picture of what you want to learn, exaggerate it and make it funny!
3
Silly Sentences
Weird Words
A silly sentence is a sentence that can be used to help you remember key information. For example, you can remember the colours of the rainbow by saying, ‘Richard of York gave battle in vain.’ This gives us red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
You can create a new word or use existing words to help remember a big list of information.
So if you have a list to remember, make up a simple or silly sentence to help you remember it. 14
For example, there are six counties in Northern Ireland: Fermanagh, Antrim, Tyrone, Derry, Armagh, Down. How can you remember all six easily? FAT DAD! So next time you are trying to remember the six counties of Northern Ireland, simply think of a big FAT DAD!
The Story Method There once was a little girl called Shannon. Her hair was bright pink. One day, Shannon was walking along a river when she decided, ‘Hey, I want a river all to myself!’ So she got herself a wheelbarrow to make her own river. She went down to the shore to get an idea of what the river should look like. When she got there, all she could see was black water. It didn’t look very nice at all. But as she looked out over the water, she saw a patch of water that was clear. So she jumped into one of the boats along the shore. But she noticed there were no oars in the boat to row. Poor Shannon! As she sat there in the boat, an angry man with a bright red face came down to the shore and shouted, ‘There’s no rowing on the river. Rowing here is banned!’ Shannon sat there in her boat, thinking to herself, ‘Maybe I don’t need a river to myself after all.’ With that, she jumped out of the boat and walked home. You have just memorised the six longest rivers in Ireland. You might just have a talent for Geography. Here they are again for you:
Shannon
Barrow
Suir
(the girl) (the wheelbarrow) (the shore)
Blackwater (black water)
Nore
(no oars)
Bann
(banned!)
How was it possible to memorise those new words so quickly? You read a story that used all of the memory tips from the previous page. It was exaggerated, it was colourful and it was silly. If you use these techniques and create your own story whenever you want to remember a lot of information, you can remember anything!

WHAT'S your
STORY?
We all love a good story. When you write a story, you have to include all the right parts. So, what are the parts that make up a story?
The Plot
The Setting Where does your story take place? For example, is it: On a beach in Mayo? At a playground in a park? On the moon?!
What happens in your story? Here are some examples to get you started:
You meet a strange wizard in an old house. A brave girl saves her sister’s life. Your honest friend finds lots of money.
The setting can change during the story. For example, your story can start in your house and end up on an island in the middle of the ocean!
The Narrator
The Characters Who is in your story? It could be anyone, like:
Who is telling the story? Is it:
You and your friend Your family, your teacher or your pet The animals in the zoo or a time traveller from the future!
You, the author? One of the characters? Someone else (3rd person)?
The Theme This is the overall idea of the story. For example: A big battle against invaders from Mars A love story about a dog and a cat A funny story about a lonely clown.
28
The Time Period When does your story take place? For example, is it in:
The past (1944, during the Second World War)? The present (right now)? The future (the year 2414)?
Grammar & Spelling You need to make sure you use correct spelling when you write your story. Follow the rules of grammar when you write it or else your story won’t make sense!
My story takes place during the summer in the woods near my house. My friend and I were walking my dog when a sleepy owl swooped down from a nearby tree and dropped a treasure map on the path. Our adventure to find the hidden treasure began! 29

There are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches in the world. Orbiting around just one of those stars are eight planets. One of these planets is very special, it’s the planet we live on, Earth! Earth is often called ‘The Blue Planet’ because over 70% of its surface is covered in water. We see water all the time so it’s easy to forget how special this liquid really is! Without water, there would be no life on our planet. Human bodies are mostly made up of water and we can only survive for about a week without water.
the
BLUE planet
Planet Earth is the only planet that supports life in our solar system. Working outward from the sun, the planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. An easy way to remember their order is “My Very Easy Method Just Sums Up Names.” The moon orbits the earth and takes about 27 days to go all the way round. There is no wind or weather on the moon because it has no atmosphere. The moon does not make its own light, it just reflects light from the sun.

Whose lives are pledged to Ireland,

Faoi mhóid bheith saor Sworn to be free,
Seantír ár sinsear feasta,

Ní fhágfar faoin tíorán ná faoin tráill. Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Anocht a théam sa bhearna baoil, Tonight we man the “bearna baoil”,
Le gean ar Ghaeil, chun báis nó saoil, In Erin’s cause, come woe or weal,
Le gunna scréach faoi lámhach na bpiléar, ’Mid cannons’ roar and rifles’ peal,
Seo libh canaig’ amhrán na bhfiann We’ll chant a soldier’s song
