Additional Educational Needs
The Student’s Council
In Scoil Mhuire, we are committed to developing each student to their full potential. The Special Educational Needs (SEN) Department provides ongoing support to students with AEN. Students are supported in an inclusive manner in Scoil Mhuire through offering differentiated teaching in a range of subjects. Where it is deemed necessary, the form of support may be on a one-to-one basis or in a small group setting. In addition to this, Scoil Mhuire has established two special classes to provide an education exclusively for students with a broader range of additional educational needs.
The Student Council is a representative structure for students through which they can become vocal and active in school affairs , working responsibly in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school community.
Special Education support is an integral part of the timetable for students with AEN. Students will receive support, subject to hours received from the Department of Education and Skills. To ensure a holistic approach in the support structures offered to students with AEN the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Department liaises with students, parents, staff, and outside agencies to coordinate provision for students with AEN. The National Council for Special Education continuum of support framework enables us to identify and support the needs of students with AEN in a flexible manner.
Student members are given the opportunity to foster various skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork, organisation and public speaking. At our meetings, students share and discuss their ideas, interests and concerns. The Student Council also has an active role in fundraising for school-wide activities including social events, community projects, helping people in need and school requirements.
