ADMISSION and Enrolment Policy

Abbey Community College has a comprehensive Admissions and Enrolment Policy which is underpinned by the philosophy that each child who applies for entry to our school receives fair and equitable treatment as outlined in current legislation and the school’s education philosophy.

Abbey Community College is located in the historic town of Boyle, Co Roscommon, Ireland. Our school sits alongside the historic Boyle Abbey, a 12th Century Cistercian Abbey, the beautiful Lough Key Forest Park and the magnificent King House former home to Edward King, MP, first earl of Kingston. Our College was built in 2002 and sits at the foot of the Curlew Mountains.

We offer our students a broad holistic education set against the atmosphere of mutual respect and dignity for all. We pride ourselves in our school and all it stands for and students relish the many opportunities provided to them to represent our school in competition. We fervently believe that with our help and support, all our students will reach their full potential both academically and in the context of extracurricular activities. We have dedicated ASD and Moderate learning Units, welcome students of all abilities and very much value our position at the heart of the community of Boyle.

There are presently approximately 515 students enrolled in our school. We boast a highly qualified and motivated staff and our school boasts regular recognition on the local and national stage in terms of academic performance and success at extracurricular activities.

Abbey Community College has a comprehensive social media presence with our school website (www.abbeycc.ie), Facebook, Twitter and Instagram supporting our own dedicated school app in the distribution of school updates. Our e-portal, VSWare, provides external access to parents and students to their student performance and information details in realtime. All in all, we are a modern progressive and very successful school.

At present Abbey Comunity College offers 4 programmes: Junior Certificate, Transition Year (Available for all students), Leaving Certificate, Leaving Cert Applied, L2LP, Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP).

Erasmus Programme

Abbey Community College provides wonderful opportunities for both staff and students to travel throughout Europe under the EU Erasmus programme. This is often at no cost to the students an is a wonderful opportunity for students to travel and explore newcultures and experiences.

FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

The transition from Primary to Post-Primary school can be very daunting for students. At Abbey Community College every effort is made to ensure that this change happens smoothly and with the maximum of support. Students are encouraged to take part in a variety of classroom and extracurricular activities. Working with feeder national schools, we provide a specialised induction programme, which is followed right throughout the first year. It is aimed at helping all students with the transition from primary to post primary. A Buddy and Mentoring system is also in place.

Abbey Community College welcomes all students regardless of ability, race or religion. Students who require special help will receive as much help as they require within the confines of the school’s resources. We strive to include all students, regardless of ability, within the mainstream as appropriate. Our College boasts two state of the art ASD Units and a fully equipped Moderate Learning Unit (MLU). These classes are supported by 6 Special Needs Assistants (SNA’s) to help the students fully engage with the school’s curricula.

Students complete 400hrs of a wellbeing programme consisting of P.E., S.P.H.E. and C.S.P.E. over the three-year Junior Cycle as well as other related subjects. It is far more to us though than a concept, we value everyone in the school, and we strive to always improve and support the wellbeing of the whole school community.

Transition year is offered to all students. This occurs after the completion of the Junior Cert. Transition Year encompasses many of the subjects mentioned above combined with many others including enterprise, work experience, computer applications, programming and culinary arts.

The focus within Transition Year is on group- work, selfdirected learning, communication, oral proficiency and work experience with the aim of developing and enhancing the many life skills necessary for our students to survive and prosper at third level and in the world of work.

Abbey Community College produces a school musical each alternate year. Students of all non- exam years have the opportunity to take part in this musical. It is a wonderful way to demonstrate the range of skills and talents our students possess.

TRANSITION YEAR SCHOOL MUSICAL LEAVING CERT APPLIED

Abbey CC also provides the Leaving Cert Applied option for students who do not wish to follow the path of the conventional leaving cert or transition year options. It is a vocational based programme and works on the basis of a 4-day school week with the 5th day dedicated to work experience. It is open to all students post junior cycle.
