Steven Bartlett's passion for business, coupled with his intimate knowledge of these exceptional small brands, makes his recommendations essential reading for those seeking fresh and innovative ventures.
Steven Bartlett is an exceptional individual whose remarkable journey as an entrepreneur would impress even the most accomplished moguls. Defying stereotypes, he exudes confidence, possesses keen business acumen, and stands out with his impeccable style and charm.
Hailing from Botswana but raised in Plymouth, Bartlett has a wealth of knowledge to offer aspiring entrepreneurs. A shining example of this was his recent involvement in eBay’s WINtern Tiktok initiative, where small business owners had the chance to win him as an intern for a day. “It was an incredibly invigorating experience,” Bartlett shares. “To visit someone’s business, provide them with the vital advice I wish someone had given me, and play the role of their intern… And let me assure you, I fully embraced the intern role—I cleaned, made tea, and, of course, shared valuable insights.”
In the current landscape, where starting a new business presents unprecedented challenges, Bartlett’s expertise as a young entrepreneur proves invaluable. “As an entrepreneur, you need to be aware of the countless things you don’t know that you don’t know,” he explains. “Mentorship can play a role, but the internet is a far more valuable resource. It holds answers to almost everything.”
For those with exceptional ideas but lacking the confidence and resources to launch them, Bartlett offers tried-and-tested advice: “The first step is to create a concise ten-page deck. The initial page highlights the name, followed by two slides explaining the problem I aim to solve. The subsequent slides outline my solution and delve into other relevant aspects, depending on the industry.”
Bartlett emphasises that successful entrepreneurs need to share their ideas with thousands of people. “Contrary to popular belief, I’ve never written a business plan in my life. Instead, I’ve always focused on creating that ten-page deck. I’ve done it around five times, and two of those businesses have achieved nine-figure success, one reached eight figures, one failed, and one is yet to launch.”
Armed with this advice, it’s time to revive your PowerPoint skills. However, whether you have a deck or not, numerous young brands are defying the odds during these challenging times. Bartlett is well-acquainted with those that truly stand out. From two companies he interned with through eBay’s WINtern competition to a fast-growing fashion brand in Manchester and an eco-conscious solution for bottled water, here are five new businesses curated by Bartlett that deserve your attention.
“I had the opportunity to work with The Chocolate Cafe as part of eBay’s WINtern competition. Philip, a remarkable entrepreneur, runs this business, creating authentic, handcrafted chocolates with ethically sourced ingredients. I even had the chance to make some chocolates myself, so if you decide to indulge, you might be enjoying something I crafted. It’s a wonderful business, and I greatly admire Philip for diving into the world of chocolate without any prior experience.”
“As part of the WINtern campaign, I had the privilege of working with Kirsty from The Perfect Gift Co. She creates exquisite slate tiles and other items pressed with personalised images. Witnessing her fascinating process was an enchanting experience. Starting with a low-resolution image on paper, she combines it with a piece of stone using heat, resulting in a perfect high-definition picture on the slate. It truly feels like magic to me, and Kirsty deserves all the praise and success.”
“Represent is one of the few brands I consistently wear. In fact, I’m dressed head to toe in their attire right now. This British streetwear brand, founded by two brothers, deeply values the quality and style of their clothing. I’m currently sporting their 24/7 range, which lives up to its name—I wake up, work at the office, attend meetings, and even hit the gym, all in the same outfit. Represent is not the type of brand that slaps logos on generic products bought from China; they genuinely care about their craft.”
“The only water you’ll find in my house is CanO Water. This ethically conscious brand is transforming the way we consume water. Sourced from the Austrian Alps, their packaging is entirely plastic-free—an initiative I fully support as I’ve made a personal commitment to reduce plastic in my fridge.”
“Feel Good Club is a small business run by two wonderful wives. One of them previously served as my ‘head of happiness’ at Social Chain, where she dedicated six years of her life. Together, they established a mental well-being brand. Their Manchesterbased community hub resembles a coffee shop but offers much more—a versatile event space that remains open throughout the day. They have recently released the Feel Good Club book.”
“Contrary to popular belief, I’ve never written a business plan in my life. My businesses have achieved nine-figure success.”
As economic growth lags in many sectors, the UK’s tech industry is breaking free from the pack, soaring ahead at an astonishing rate. With a growth rate over two and a half times faster than the rest of the economy, tech companies are sprouting up at a remarkable 22% average rate. Delving into this fiercely competitive landscape, it becomes clear that certain regions are magnetic for tech professionals and offer fertile ground for tech firms to flourish. To shed light on the factors driving this success, Microsoft Partners, Pragmatiq, conducted a data study that uncovers the secrets behind thriving tech companies.
The League of Tech Savvy: Ranking the Regions By meticulously analysing data against various criteria, each region has been evaluated and ranked using a points system, distinguishing innovation hubs from those with a lesser focus on tech. The criteria considered include the number of tech jobs advertised, average Wi-Fi speed, average tech salary, the presence of universities offering computer science degrees, and the number of tech companies in each region.
Which areas are leading the charge in tech innovation and growth?
Discover the top contenders, the secret ingredients to their success, and the regions that are catching up in our special report on the UK's tech powerhouses
Greater London: The Obvious Champion With a reputation as one of the world’s leading financial powerhouses and the UK’s capital city, it’s no surprise that Greater London tops the leaderboard. Scoring consistently high across all categories, Greater London boasts above-average salaries, a multitude of tech jobs, lightning-fast Wi-Fi speeds, prestigious universities offering computer science degrees, and a thriving tech company scene. As a magnet for both FTSE100 corporations and disruptive start-ups, the city’s sizeable millennial and Gen Z workforce, considered digital natives, contribute to its success. Tech professionals in London enjoy the highest average salary, standing at £55,000, a substantial £17,500 more than their counterparts in South East England.
The Second Most Tech-Savvy Region: South East England South East England secures a prominent spot, earning four out of five points and establishing a solid lead over the third-place contender. This region offers exceptional job prospects in the tech industry, attractive salaries, top-notch universities providing computer science degrees, and a staggering count of approximately 4,812 tech companies. South East England also provides a conducive environment for studying, with six high-ranking universities, including the esteemed University of Oxford within the prestigious Russell Group. However, the region falls slightly behind in Wi-Fi speed, trailing by a mere 0.4Mbps, likely due to limited investment in telecommunications infrastructure.
Five regions share third place, each securing two points. With the exception of Scotland, these regions fall below the average for tech salaries, which stands at £37,342. Glasgow, a popular destination for millennials and Gen Z, contributes to Scotland’s higher average salary, along with its universities offering quality computer science degrees. Despite their educational opportunities and young workforce, these regions receive lower scores due to fewer job prospects further north.

Wales lands in last place, hindered by low average Wi-Fi speeds and a scarcity of tech companies. With an average speed of 58.3Mbps and a meagre 882 tech companies, Wales pales in comparison to the staggering 23,901 tech corporations in Greater London. Nevertheless, Wales boasts three universities offering excellent computer science degrees, with Cardiff University maintaining a satisfaction rate of 78.8%. The North East, scoring zero points, struggles with lower average tech salaries, offering around £32,500, a £5,000 difference compared to South East England. However, the region’s abundance of high-ranking universities and a high proportion of STEM students positions it as an attractive hub for tech investment.
Regions like Greater London and South East England lead the charge in tech advancement and opportunities. South East England benefits from businesses trickling down from Greater London, ensuring above-average salaries and ample access to digital tech roles. This study reveals that every region has room to further emphasise tech, with only Greater London scoring in all five criteria, while two regions, North East England and Wales, score none. Local councils and organisations can take steps to enhance their regions’ tech offerings. Over time, regions like the North East of England and Scotland are expected to climb the ranks, accruing more points for advertised jobs and the number of tech companies.
Greater Manchester is experiencing a remarkable renaissance, with its productivity growth surpassing that of comparable Northern cities and steadily narrowing the gap with London. The Executive Magazine analyses data from Metro Dynamics and the Northern Powerhouse Partnership.
GGreater Manchester’s Productivity Surges, Closing Gap with London: Metro Dynamics Analysis Reveals Transformative Impact of Transport Investment
The economic consultancy Metro Dynamics, in collaboration with the Northern Powerhouse Partnership (NPP), has unveiled promising findings indicating the beginning of a productivity resurgence in Greater Manchester. The analysis shows that the city region’s productivity growth is surpassing that of comparable Northern cities, while simultaneously closing the gap with London.
Contrary to popular belief, this economic success is not confined to the city centre alone. Evidence suggests that income and productivity growth are being experienced across Greater Manchester as a result of investment in intracity transport connectivity. These findings support the argument that towns are not hindered, but rather aided, by their links to nearby cities.
One transformative element in Greater Manchester’s economic fortunes over the past three decades has been the Metrolink tram network, inaugurated by the late Queen in 1992. The network has not only driven up wages and productivity but has also led to a fourfold increase in house prices within half a mile of Bury’s tram stop between 1995 and 2021.
However, certain areas in the north-western part of the city

region, such as Wigan and Leigh, which are not connected to the tram network, have not experienced the same level of productivity and income growth. This disparity raises questions about how the upcoming implementation of the Bee Network—Greater Manchester’s vision for an integrated transport system—could potentially benefit these areas.
Devolution is also considered a crucial factor in supporting the city’s economic transformation. In 2014, Greater Manchester became the first English city region outside London to secure a devolution settlement, marking an important milestone in local leadership and decision-making.
Lord Jim O’Neill, Chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, highlights the significance of the data, affirming that the Northern Powerhouse model, focused on agglomeration and empowered local leadership, is proving effective. Lord O’Neill emphasises the need to replicate Greater Manchester’s success across the North and scale it to address the overall productivity challenge faced by the region:
“The recent productivity growth across Manchester, and Greater Manchester even more so, means that the gap with London is now starting to close.
“We’re now seeing signs that addressing transport, with a consistent focus on securing agglomeration benefits, is starting to bear fruit.
“Building on and replicating Greater Manchester’s success across the North, and scaling it to create an effective pan-northern
labour market, is key to solving our overall productivity challenge.”
Mike Emmerich, Founding Director of Metro Dynamics, adds further insights, dispelling the notion that Manchester’s success is limited to the city center. He underscores the more even spread of productivity growth across the entire city region, particularly in areas that have received transport investments.
“Some have assumed that Manchester’s success has been limited to the city but this is evidence that productivity growth has been spread much more evenly across most of the whole city region, specifically those areas which have received investment in transport.
“Over the past three decades, Greater Manchester has taken a consistent and common economic and investment strategy including on transport, and we’re now seeing the green shoots of a productivity resurgence as a result.
“It’s perhaps no surprise, therefore, that many other city regions across the North and England more widely have decided to follow the same course.”
The consistent and comprehensive economic and investment strategy, including a focus on transport, has laid the foundation for the green shoots of a productivity resurgence in Greater Manchester.
As other city regions in the North and throughout England observe these positive outcomes, they are increasingly adopting similar strategies to drive their own economic growth.

According to a recent report by Lumen Technologies, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are becoming increasingly intricate and difficult to detect. The study highlights a surge in Domain Name Server (DNS) Amplification attacks, with a particular emphasis on the rising prevalence of DNS water torture attacks.
Lumen’s findings, which draw upon data from their internal tools and the insights of their API and application protection partner, ThreatX, reveal that DNS amplification was leveraged in 26% of single-vector attacks during Q1 2023. This represents a staggering 417% increase compared to the previous quarter. Notably, the most sophisticated form of DNS amplification identified is the “DNS water torture attack.”
Mitigating these attacks poses significant challenges. DNS Amplification attacks involve flooding a target with DNS response traffic, utilizing publicly accessible open DNS servers. DNS water torture attacks, on the other hand, prevent the DNS server from responding to valid DNS queries, rendering comprehensive DDoS mitigation measures indispensable.
In addition to DNS Amplification, threat actors employ various other attack vectors, including ICMP, TCP RST, TCP SYN/ACK Amplification, and UDP amplification. These multifaceted assaults targeting specific ports, protocols, and systems significantly heighten the difficulty of mitigation.
Lumen’s report highlights that the volume of DDoS attacks remains alarmingly high. In the first quarter of this year alone, the company mitigated over 8,600 such attacks, marking a 40% increase compared to the previous year. Q1 2023 ranked as the second-busiest quarter in the last two years.
It is noteworthy that threat actors often choose holidays as opportune moments to launch their attacks, taking advantage of reduced staff presence in target organizations. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day emerged as the busiest holiday during Q1.
Peter Brecl, Lumen’s Director of Product Management for DDoS mitigation and application protection, commented on the evolving threat landscape, stating, “The pace at which companies and other organisations have been expanding their digital footprints has increased over the past few years. The larger attack surface creates more opportunities for threat actors to launch attacks. The only way to protect that digital presence is to deploy a holistic solution that includes network protection, application-layer protection, and application acceleration capabilities. This type of comprehensive coverage – including DDoS mitigation, API protections, Web Application Firewalls, and Bot Risk Management – helps ensure that critical business functions stay up and running – even when under an active attack.”
The cyber underworld is a breeding ground for relentless innovation, and its latest creation is a chilling testament to that fact. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, once seen as disruptive nuisances, have now evolved into complex and elusive monsters, lurking in the shadows of the digital realm.

IIn the world of UK business, success and prosperity often go hand in hand. As entrepreneurs and executives carve out their paths to financial success, many are now seeking meaningful ways to give back to society. Philanthropy has emerged as a powerful and transformative means for business leaders to leverage their fortunes for the greater good. With many UK business leaders choosing to use their wealth for charitable causes, they emphasise the immense impact of philanthropy on society.
Traditionally, wealth accumulation was the ultimate goal, but today, successful entrepreneurs and directors are recognising the importance of using their financial resources to create positive change. This shift in perspective has led to a surge in philanthropic activities across the nation. Understanding the motivations behind philanthropy is crucial to appreciating its impact. For many business leaders, the desire to contribute to societal betterment is deeply ingrained. Some have personal experiences that have inspired them to support specific causes, such as battling diseases, promoting education, or addressing poverty. Others feel a strong sense of social responsibility, acknowledging the role their success plays in wider economic and social disparities.
One exemplary case of philanthropic motivation is Sir Tom Hunter, a Scottish entrepreneur and businessman. After achieving tremendous success in the retail industry, he committed himself to give away most of his wealth to various charitable causes. His foundation, "The Hunter Foundation," has since contributed millions of pounds to education, entrepreneurship, and global poverty reduction efforts, leaving a lasting impact on society.
Giving back is not just about making a difference in the lives of others; it also brings immense joy and satisfaction to the donors themselves. Business leaders who engage in philanthropy often find it personally rewarding, providing them with a sense of purpose and fulfilment that transcends financial success. Take, for instance, the philanthropic endeavours of Sir Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group. Beyond building an empire of diverse businesses, Branson established "Virgin Unite," the charitable arm of the Virgin Group. Through this organisation, he addresses pressing global issues, such as environmental sustainability, healthcare, and social justice. Branson's philanthropy has not only
made a significant impact on those in need but has also enriched his life, offering a deeper sense of fulfilment in giving back.
While philanthropy is driven by compassion, successful UK business leaders approach it with a strategic mindset. They recognise that making a significant impact requires careful planning and thoughtful allocation of resources. Strategic giving involves identifying causes that align with their values, focusing on measurable outcomes, and collaborating with reputable charities or NGOs.
Dame Stephanie Shirley, a trailblazing tech entrepreneur, is an exemplar of strategic philanthropy. As the founder of a successful software company in the 1960s, she channelled her wealth into her charitable foundation, "The Shirley Foundation." Her philanthropy focuses on areas such as autism research, IT education for disadvantaged youth, and projects empowering women. By adopting a strategic approach, Dame Stephanie Shirley's foundation has played a pivotal role in driving positive change across these domains.
Many successful business leaders establish charitable foundations as a means to channel their philanthropic efforts. These foundations can have a lasting impact by supporting various causes over the long term, allowing donors to leave a legacy of positive change. Notable UK business figures, such as Lord Sainsbury and Sir Ian Wood, have set up foundations that continue to drive meaningful change in their chosen areas of focus.
Philanthropy among UK business leaders is not just about giving large sums of money; it also serves as a powerful source of inspiration for others. As high-profile figures, these individuals wield significant influence within their industries and society. By championing philanthropy, they encourage others to join the cause and create a ripple effect of generosity and compassion.
Philanthropy has become a cornerstone of UK business leaders' endeavours to make a positive impact on society. As they harness their fortunes for charitable causes, they showcase the immense potential of strategic giving to effect lasting change. By leading by example and inspiring others to contribute, these business leaders are transforming the landscape of philanthropy and fostering a brighter, more compassionate future for all. As the culture of giving continues to thrive, it is evident that the spirit of philanthropy will remain an integral part of the UK business community, shaping a society that cares for the greater good.

Velo Bianco is an emerging luxury bridal boutique, but it's already making waves in the wedding sector. The Executive Magazine speaks with Founder Aleks Pakulniewicz on how she's challenging the traditional model, and bringing luxury wedding dresses to the modern bride
IIt’s not often we see innovation in the bridal sector. Buying a wedding dress is a tradition, an event, an experience, but more increasingly, it can be a hassle. This was evidently clear during the pandemic. Lockdown saw the closure of non-essential shops, and bridal stores were no exception. During this time, Aleks Pakulniewicz saw an opportunity – but her idea for an online-only wedding brand was already in the making.
Aleks tells us: “I started Velo Bianco before the pandemic, but it was lockdown that really helped me to realise my vision. But it wasn’t easy, I was challenging the entire industry, and asking brides to change the way they bought a wedding dress. It’s one of the most important purchases for the big day – so convincing a bride to put her trust in us and buy her dream dress without seeing it first was a major hurdle. This was the perception that I had to change, and a lot of people told me it couldn’t be done, or was even a bad idea.”
But Aleks was determined to prove that high-value items could be sold more efficiently online: “There’s so many advantages to eCommerce in the luxury sector that consumers are now realising. Especially in the wedding sector. A bride is presented with infinitely more options than before. Previously she would need to decide on the style of dress, the designer she preferred, and find a shop that stocks them. She would need to book an appointment, attend multiple fittings, and wait an exorbitant amount of time for her dress to be made. In the year or two she has to wait for her dress, a lot can change.
“The modern bride knows exactly what she wants. Our
clientele is made up of busy women, they don’t have much free time. They’re decisive, well travelled, independent, and they know what they want. We’ve also noticed the wedding date is set much sooner than it used to be. To meet this demand, we have made innovations in dressmaking, one being that we offer standard sizing on all of our designs.”
Velo Bianco hand makes all of the dresses to order in their European ateliers. Fabric is sourced from all over the world, and because of the standard sizing options, the turnaround time is around 12 weeks. This is a huge difference to the industry norm. “It was important for me to be able to provide our clients with the latest bridal trends quicker and easier. My grandmother was a talented seamstress for over 50 years, and it was her legacy that inspired me to create something of my own, and make her proud. We take those artisanal seamstress skills, and apply them to modern tailoring and luxurious fabrics. We adopt the latest technology to help us create, market and deliver our dresses worldwide. We have also innovated with our unique bridal accessories such as our range of overskirts, which allows the bride to have two different looks on her wedding day.”
Now, Velo Bianco is an online success story. The brand is growing internationally, with their exquisite creations being shipped to over 15 countries. The plans to expand the business are led by organic growth. “I don’t want the company to become overwhelming. I want to make sure that every single bride feels special, and has an exceptional experience. Quality control is key, and so is the aftercare. By focussing on remaining as a boutique online store, and staying true to our roots, I can ensure that every single dress is made perfectly.”

OOpodo, a leading online travel agent, conducted a recent survey with 10,000 participants from various international markets, including 2,000 respondents from the UK. The poll aimed to explore the impact of travel on mental well-being and identify the activities that most strongly support one’s state of mind during a trip.
The survey findings from Opodo indicate that a majority of respondents worldwide reported a “very positive” or “quite positive” impact of holidays on their mental well-being. Interestingly, in the UK, individuals between the ages of 45 and 54, often referred to as the “squeezed middle,” reported the highest percentage of “very positive” effects. On a global scale, respondents from the United States perceived the least benefit of holidays on their peace of mind, while Italians and Portuguese found it to be the most beneficial.
Globally, 63% of all respondents stated that holidays had a “very positive” impact on their mental well-being, with an
additional 29% reporting a “quite positive” impact, totaling 92% overall. In the UK, 54% of respondents described a “very positive” effect, while 36% reported a “quite positive” effect, amounting to a total of 90%.
Among British travellers, the region with the most positive psychological effect of holidays was the East Midlands, with 64% of respondents reporting such effects. Three other regions, namely the East of England, the North East, and the West Midlands, followed closely behind with 58% of participants reporting a “very positive” effect. In contrast, only 47% of Scottish respondents reported the same level of positive impact.
Within the UK, individuals aged 45-54 reported the highest percentage (59%) of “very positive” effects resulting from their holiday experiences. Moreover, 79% of Portuguese travellers and 78% of Italians ranked the effects of holidays as “very positive,” whereas only 42% of Americans held the same view.
The results revealed that the majority of travellers stated that simply relaxing and doing “nothing” had the most positive effect. Reading ranked as the second most beneficial activity, with British respondents leading the
pack compared to other nationalities. Younger individuals found new experiences and adventurous activities to be beneficial, while the oldest age group emphasized the helpfulness of meeting new people for their state of mind.
Globally, a significant majority of respondents (42%) cited “relaxing and doing nothing” as the most beneficial activity, followed by sightseeing (35%) and reading (19%). The top three activities reported by UK respondents aligned with the global findings, with 49% emphasizing the importance of relaxing, 44% enjoying sightseeing, and 31% finding solace in reading.
In the UK, 43% of respondents from the North West region relied on reading as their second most important source of mental well-being during a holiday, compared to only 7% of those from Northern Ireland. Additionally, 31% of British respondents ranked reading as the second most beneficial holiday activity, compared to 13% from France and 14% from Portugal.
Among the global respondents, 24% of those aged 1824 derived mental benefits from adventurous activities, whereas only 14% of the 45-54 age group expressed the same sentiment. Furthermore, 19% of British respondents aged 65 and over reported positive effects from meeting new people during their holidays, in contrast to just 7% of those aged 45-54.
These findings shed light on the positive impact of holidays on mental well-being and the activities that support it. Taking time to relax, engage in leisurely activities, and explore new experiences can significantly contribute to one’s mental well-being during a holiday. The poll highlights the importance of travel in rejuvenating our minds and finding moments of serenity amidst our busy lives.
The results indicate that the benefits of holidays extend beyond mere physical relaxation. They play a crucial role in improving our overall mental health and emotional state. It is encouraging to see that a large majority of respondents worldwide perceive holidays as having a positive impact on their well-being. This reaffirms the notion that travel is not just about visiting new places but also about nurturing our inner selves.
Within the UK, the survey reveals interesting patterns
among different age groups and regions. The 45-54 age group, often burdened with responsibilities and workrelated stress, finds immense value in holiday experiences. This suggests that taking a break from routine and allowing oneself to unwind can have a transformative effect on mental well-being.
The findings regarding regional variations in the UK emphasize the diverse ways in which people derive mental benefits from their vacations. The East Midlands emerges as the region where holiday experiences have the most positive psychological impact. Meanwhile, Scottish respondents appear to be less inclined to attribute the same level of positive effects to their holidays.
When it comes to specific activities that support mental well-being during holidays, the survey sheds light on interesting preferences. Across the globe, the majority of respondents find solace in simply relaxing and doing nothing. In today’s fast-paced world, where constant productivity is often prioritized, this reaffirms the importance of allowing ourselves moments of stillness and tranquility.
Reading, another favoured activity, stands out as a significant contributor to mental well-being. It offers an opportunity to escape into different worlds, expand knowledge, and gain a fresh perspective. British respondents, in particular, lead the pack in prioritizing reading during their holidays, highlighting the special connection they have with books as a means of nourishing their minds.
While relaxation and reading are prominent choices, it is worth noting the contrasting preferences among different age groups. Younger individuals value new experiences and adventurous activities as sources of mental wellbeing during their trips. On the other hand, the older age group places greater importance on meeting new people, emphasizing the social aspect of travel and the positive impact it can have on mental health.
As we navigate a world that is gradually recovering from the challenges of the past, the findings of this survey serve as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing our mental health and well-being. Whether it’s through a peaceful retreat, immersing ourselves in a good book, or embarking on exciting adventures, taking time to travel and nurture our minds is an essential part of living a balanced and fulfilling life.
TThe prestigious Maranello marque, Ferrari, delighted its clients by unveiling the highly anticipated Ferrari Roma Spider at an exclusive event held at the El Badi Palace in Marrakesh. This new addition to the Ferrari lineup pays homage to the elegant and pleasure-seeking Italian lifestyle of the 1950s and 60s while offering exceptional performance. The Roma Spider inherits the successful proportions, volumes, and specifications of the Ferrari Roma’s V8 2+ concept, but what truly sets it apart is the reintroduction of a soft top, a feature absent in front-engined Ferrari cars since the iconic 1969 365 GTS4.
With a contemporary twist on the soft-top design, the Ferrari Roma Spider exudes exuberance and offers extensive personalization options, including sophisticated bespoke fabrics and contrasting stitching. Functionally, the soft top can be deployed in just 13.5 seconds and operated at speeds of up to 60 km/h. Its compact size not only allows for a larger boot but also enhances the car’s versatility. A new patented wind deflector integrated into the rear bench’s backrest adds to the occupants’ comfort, all without occupying any space within the car.
Retaining the Ferrari Roma’s outstanding dynamic characteristics, the Roma Spider boasts a best-inclass weight-to-power ratio, thanks to its soft top and all-aluminum chassis, coupled with a powerful 620 cv V8 engine that has been hailed as the International Engine of the Year for four consecutive years. The engine is paired with Ferrari’s acclaimed 8-speed DCT transmission, known for its lightningfast shift times, comfort, and mechanical efficiency.
The Ferrari Roma Spider offers not only a rewarding driving experience but also exceptional responsiveness and agility, making it the ideal companion for both weekend getaways and long journeys. And, of course, the exhilarating Ferrari V8 soundtrack accompanies every drive. The car’s versatility is enhanced by features such as a spacious boot, including a hatch through the rear seat backrests for carrying larger items, and standard wireless connectivity through Android Auto® and Apple CarPlay® Wi-Fi. Additionally, the 18-way-adjustable heated ergonomic seats, optionally equipped with a neck warmer for colder days, ensure a comfortable driving experience.
Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre under the leadership of Flavio Manzoni, the Ferrari Roma Spider aims to embody the “La Nuova Dolce Vita” concept beyond city limits, offering elegant and carefree open-air driving experiences. The sophisticated fabric soft top maintains and enhances the coupé’s flawless proportions without compromising its elegantly flowing silhouette.
The reimagined tapering roofline of the coupé allows for the incorporation of the soft top, which folds below the tonneau cover when open. The Ferrari Roma Spider introduces a body-color band running across the base of the roof, creating a seamless integration with the rear screen and the carbon-fiber active spoiler. When the soft top is lowered, the active spoiler visually connects with the rear bench and headrests.
Setting it apart from conventional convertibles, the Ferrari Roma Spider features a unique soft-top material that exudes sophistication. Meticulously selected fabric weaves in contrasting colors highlight the car’s dual personalities: one elegant and the other sporty. The bespoke finish with a two-tone weave evokes a refined haute couture feel. An optional technical fabric designed exclusively for this car adds a sporty yet sophisticated allure with its striking iridescent red finish, enhancing the roof’s 3D surface.
With its clean and harmonious design, the Ferrari Roma Spider embraces Ferrari’s tradition of front-engined GT cars while incorporating a modern and sophisticated style. The long front bonnet, flowing into the spare silhouette of the flanks, accentuates the aggressive stance and dynamic character of the car. The front grille, featuring the iconic prancing horse logo, is flanked by slim LED headlights that seamlessly integrate into the fenders, further emphasizing the car’s aerodynamic profile.
Moving to the rear, the Ferrari Roma Spider showcases a muscular and sculpted design, with wide rear haunches and a prominent diffuser that houses quad exhaust pipes. The LED taillights are seamlessly integrated into the rear fenders, creating a visually striking and cohesive rear end. The active spoiler, finished in body color, adds a touch of sportiness and enhances aerodynamic performance.
Inside the cabin, the Ferrari Roma Spider combines luxury and technology to create an immersive driving environment. The driverfocused cockpit features a minimalist design with clean lines and premium materials. The central console houses a high-resolution touchscreen display that provides access to the car’s infotainment system, including navigation, media, and vehicle settings. The steering wheel, with its integrated controls, allows for effortless control of various functions without distracting the driver.
The Ferrari Roma Spider offers a range of customization options, allowing owners to tailor the car to their personal preferences. From a variety of luxurious leather options to carbon fiber trims and bespoke stitching, each detail can be customized to create a truly unique and personalized driving experience.
Safety and performance are paramount in the Ferrari Roma Spider. The car is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems and cutting-edge technologies to ensure a safe and exhilarating driving experience. Features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking enhance safety on the road, while the car’s aerodynamic design and powerful engine deliver exceptional performance and handling.
Overall, the Ferrari Roma Spider embodies the spirit of open-air driving and the timeless elegance of Italian design. With its powerful engine, stunning design, and luxurious interior, it offers a thrilling and captivating driving experience. Whether cruising along coastal roads or embarking on exhilarating journeys, the Ferrari Roma Spider delivers an unmatched blend of performance, style, and comfort.
IIn a momentous tribute to its 110-year history, Aston Martin unveils the Valour, an ultraexclusive V12-powered, manual transmission special edition that pays homage to the brand’s tradition of exhilarating front-engined sports cars, designed to exhilarate purists seeking unadulterated and visceral driving thrills.
The Valour, the brainchild of Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin’s Executive Chairman, embodies the brand’s passion for driving and remarkable heritage. Stroll proudly declared, “Valour is more than just a celebration of Aston Martin’s extraordinary legacy; it represents the revitalised and vibrant essence of our brand today. With a blend of classic character and modern execution, Valour encapsulates the excitement and exclusivity that define Aston Martin’s storied legacy. A true masterpiece showcasing our world-class design, engineering, and manufacturing prowess, Valour firmly establishes Aston Martin as the champion of drivers and creator of the world’s most desirable, exclusive, and thrilling ultraluxury high-performance cars.”
The Valour is a dream come true for driving enthusiasts who crave an immersive and involving experience. As the only frontengined V12 sports car with a manual transmission in 2023, it stands as a testament to a golden era of driving, blending the latest technology and materials while staying true to the essence of Aston Martin’s greatest front-engined models.
Drawing inspiration from iconic predecessors such as the original V8 Vantage and the Vantage-based RHAM/1 ‘Muncher’ Le Mans racer from 1980, the Valour inherits the unbridled power and brawn typical of Aston Martin’s ultimate sports cars, like the mighty twin supercharged V600 Vantage from the 1990s. Its design and execution mirror the finesse of the exquisite One-77 supercar, while its driver-centric spirit is akin to the unique one-off Victor.
Limited to a mere 110 units worldwide, Valour’s rarity cements its position as one of the most collectible Aston Martins ever created. Its awe-inspiring specifications, including the epic 715PS/753Nm twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V12 paired with a bespoke six-speed manual transmission, ensure an enthralling driving experience and secure its place among the pantheon of all-time great driver’s cars.
To make the most of Valour’s immense power and torque, it features a unique powertrain calibration, granting drivers full performance and control in every gear. Coupled with a mechanical limited-slip differential and electronic traction and stability control systems, Valour offers an unparalleled connection between car and driver. The finely tuned Driving Modes – Sport, Sport+, and Track – ensure meticulous throttle response, torque management, and sound character for an unrivaled driving experience.
Valour’s dynamic prowess is further honed with bespoke suspension, adaptive dampers, and carefully adjusted wheel alignment geometry, striking a perfect balance between precise vertical body control and steadfast resistance to roll. This road car offers a sporting yet compliant ride, ensuring drivers shine on their favourite driving roads.
The hardware package includes standard-fit Carbon Ceramic Brakes, with 410mm x 38mm front discs gripped by 6-piston callipers and 360mm x 32mm rear discs with 4-piston callipers. Offering superior braking performance and reduced unsprung mass, the CCB discs resist brake fade at temperatures up to 800 degrees, providing drivers with the utmost confidence and control during spirited driving.
Completing the picture, the Valour boasts stunning 21” lightweight forged alloy ‘Honeycomb’ wheels wrapped in the latest AML-specific Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 tires, ensuring impeccable handling and road-holding under any conditions.
Simon Newton, Aston Martin’s Director of Vehicle Performance, emphasised, “Valour draws inspiration from the iconic muscle cars of our past, delivering abundant power and torque while utilising modern technology and engineering to maximise driving enjoyment. Marrying our fabulous V12 engine with a manual transmission was a unique aspect of the brief,
up its 110th-anniversary celebration, Aston Martin proudly presents the Valour, a limited-edition powerhouse designed for driving purists who crave the ultimate adrenaline rush
and the result is truly unforgettable – a state-of-the-art driver’s car that thrives on pushing limits and possesses the heart and soul of a timeless analogue classic.”
Valour’s breathtaking performance is beautifully expressed through its bold, chiseled shape, crafted entirely from carbon fibre. Aston Martin’s contemporary design language meets iconic cues from the legendary 1970s V8 Vantage, resulting in a commanding and unmistakable presence from every angle.
The front clamshell bonnet showcases a large ‘horse shoe’ vent and twin NACA ducts, ensuring ample ventilation for the twin-turbocharged V12 engine beneath. The signature Aston Martin grille has evolved for both form and function, featuring aluminium strakes at its centre and carbon fibre intakes on each side that feed air to the engine and brakes. Unique round LED headlights with rakish eyebrow-like grilles add an air of menace to Valour’s front-end.
Incorporating modern aerodynamics, Valour’s design artfully manages airflow for optimised stability, underscored by a striking front splitter, side fender vents, vortex generating exoblades on the rear screen panel, an upswept Kamm tail, and a prominent diffuser.
The rear-end features a dramatic tail-light graphic, with clusters of LED light blades reminiscent of the groundbreaking Valkyrie hypercar. A full-width aluminium accent elegantly divides the upper and lower sections, emphasising Valour’s extraordinary rear design, which centres around a triple tailpipe exhaust system made of lightweight stainless steel. This specially engineered tubing saves 7kg compared to a traditional system while producing a magnificent heavyweight exhaust note.
Valour’s celebration of Aston Martin’s heritage extends into its two-seater cockpit, which exudes timeless simplicity and seductive tactility. At the heart of the experience lies the manual transmission gear lever, available in machined aluminium, titanium, carbon fibre, or walnut, highlighting the mechanical connection and physical engagement that driving enthusiasts yearn for in this age of progress.
Masterful material selection is a hallmark of Aston Martin’s interior craftsmanship, and Valour’s cabin exemplifies this with a combination of original and highly effective materials that customers can customise to create their unique specifications. The use of traditional woollen tweed, reminiscent of the seat coverings of Aston Martin’s 1959 Le Mans-winning DBR1, offers a delightful contrast to the high-tech carbon fibre elements adorning Valour’s lightweight performance seats, bespoke door cards, fascia air vents, upper centre console, and transmission tunnel.
Valour’s personalisation options don’t end there. Aston Martin offers a flexible livery customisation process, dividing the body into four areas (front, bonnet, sides, and rear), allowing clients to choose from an extensive selection of hand-painted stripes and graphic designs in 21 different paint colours.
For those seeking an even more exclusive experience, Q by Aston Martin provides bespoke specifications, including one-off liveries, fully exposed 2×2 twill carbon fibre bodywork with tint options, painted wheels, Mokume carbon fibre interior detailing, and a range of Johnsons of Elgin tweed and cashmere fabrics for the seats and headlining.
Miles Nurnberger, Aston Martin’s Director of Design, expressed his passion for the Valour’s design journey, stating, “Aston Martin’s design ethos is always progressive, but for such a significant milestone, our 110th birthday, we allowed ourselves a bit more freedom. Valour is gloriously unapologetic, a refined old-school brute that’s reimagined through the lens of 2023. We went for a chiseled shape, moving away from the more sculptural forms found in current series production Aston Martins, with bold details and modern materials rooted in the present. The raw physicality of Valour’s design speaks volumes about its ferocious performance and analogue thrills, while its advanced technology hints at a car with modern manners and exceptional dynamic capabilities.”
Production of the Valour is set to commence in Aston Martin’s Gaydon Headquarters in the third quarter of 2023, with first deliveries scheduled for the fourth quarter. Poised to become one of the most coveted cars in Aston Martin’s unparalleled lineup of iconic front-engined special series sports cars, Valour is a precious collector’s piece that demands to be driven.
Spectre is a ground-breaking ultra-luxury electric super coupé that embodies a new era for the iconic brand, but is battery technology ready to grace the pinnacle of automotive excellence?
IIn a remarkable realisation of motoring pioneer The Hon Charles Stewart Rolls’ century-old prediction, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has launched Spectre, its first-ever fully electric model.
In 1900, The Hon Charles Stewart Rolls, a pioneer in the field of motoring, wrote an article predicting the rise of electric cars. He envisioned a future where electric vehicles would be quiet, clean, and free of vibrations and odours. While it took over a century for his vision to come to fruition, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, the company co-founded by Rolls, has finally realised his dream.
In September 2021, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced that it had commenced testing of its first-ever electric car model. The rigorous testing program involved covering over 2.5 million kilometres across various terrains and temperatures, simulating more than 400 years of normal usage. A year later, in October 2022, the company unveiled the Spectre, the world’s first fully-electric Rolls-Royce and a remarkable achievement in technical engineering.
The Spectre represents a significant milestone in the advancement of battery-electric technology. It demonstrates that electric power can be seamlessly integrated into the pinnacle of automotive luxury and performance. The introduction of the Spectre also signifies a
monumental shift for Rolls-Royce, as the company plans to transition its entire product lineup to fully electric vehicles by the end of 2030. This decision marks the end of an era for internal combustion engines in Rolls-Royce automobiles.
The Spectre is a groundbreaking ultra-luxury electric super coupe, creating an entirely new category of motor vehicles. It takes the renowned Rolls-Royce experience of instant torque, silent operation, and a smooth driving sensation and enhances it for a new generation of customers. The car’s “Decentralised Intelligence” system allows for seamless information exchange among thousands of individual vehicle functions, further enhancing the legendary “magic carpet ride” for which Rolls-Royce is known. Additionally, the Spectre showcases a contemporary yet timeless design language, embracing the brand’s heritage while embracing the electric age.
The Spectre represents a transformational moment for Rolls-Royce as the world’s first ultra-luxury electric super coupe, ushering in a bold new electric future for the brand. Crucially, the Spectre is a RollsRoyce first and an electric car second. The company has made no compromises in terms of interior space, comfort, performance, or ride quality. Instead, these aspects have been refined and elevated through the car’s underlying architecture and engineering.
With its visually striking two-door fastback design, the Spectre serves as the spiritual successor to the iconic Phantom Coupe. Its intimate interior provides a canvas for personalised customisation, featuring a unique illuminated fascia and the first-ever Starlight Doors in a
“We have designed Spectre as a true RollsRoyce, with a strikingly modern yet timeless aesthetic, which brings our marque’s design language and Bespoke capabilities into a new, electric era.”

production Rolls-Royce.
While each Spectre owner is unique, they often share an appreciation for exquisite materials, craftsmanship, and minimalist design. These individuals prefer an uncluttered aesthetic free from unnecessary embellishments. Many Spectre owners are younger, self-made, and self-assured, embracing contemporary values such as sustainability, authenticity, conscientiousness, and longevity. As one of the world’s most desirable luxury goods, the Spectre becomes an extension of its owners, reflecting their personalities, values, and accomplishments.
The Spectre represents the next chapter in Rolls-Royce engineering, referred to as “Rolls-Royce 3.0.” It follows the success of the Phantom, which marked “RollsRoyce 1.0,” and the “Architecture of Luxury” introduced with models like the Cullinan and Ghost, representing “Rolls-Royce 2.0.” With its fully-electric powertrain and Decentralised Intelligence system, the Spectre sets the stage for a new era of super-luxury motoring.
Built on the proprietary Architecture of Luxury platform, the Spectre is the fourth Rolls-Royce model to utilise this unique all-aluminium spaceframe. Remarkably, the platform was designed from the outset to accommodate an electric powertrain, showcasing Rolls-Royce’s forward-thinking approach. The architecture’s scalability and modifiability allow for customisation based on the specific requirements of each model.
For the Spectre, Rolls-Royce engineers pushed the boundaries of the concept even further. The advanced extruded aluminium sections and integrated battery structure result in a 30% increase in the spaceframe’s stiffness compared to previous RollsRoyce models. This architecture also enabled the positioning of the floor between the sill structures, contributing to a lower seating position and a truly enveloping passenger cabin. The sleekly raked windscreen not only enhances the car’s aesthetics but also improves aerodynamics.
The battery, with a capacity of 102 kWh, is integrated into the architecture and acts as an additional 700 kg of acoustic insulation, ensuring a quiet and refined ride. Made using cobalt and lithium from controlled sources in Australia, Morocco, and Argentina, the battery cells are produced using 100% green electricity. Rigorously
tested in extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to +50°C, the battery benefits from Spectre’s on-board thermal management system, maintaining optimal operating conditions at all times.
The Spectre is equipped with an uncompromised all-electric drivetrain, featuring two Separately Excited Synchronous Motors (SSMs). The front motor delivers 190 kW of power and 365 Nm of torque, while the rear motor produces 360 kW and 710 Nm, equivalent to a total output of 430 kW (584 hp) and 900 Nm of torque. The car achieves impressive acceleration, going from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds (0100 km/h in 4.5 seconds).
Rolls-Royce engaged with clients to determine the ideal range for the Spectre, resulting in a confirmed range of 530 km (329 miles) according to WLTP standards. This range comfortably accommodates the lifestyles of Rolls-Royce clients, who typically own multiple cars and drive an average of 5,100 km per year in their Rolls-Royce vehicles. Charging from 10% to 80% takes approximately 34 minutes using a 195 kW (DC) fast charger, providing around 100 km of range in just nine minutes.
The Spectre incorporates advanced technologies such as Active Lane Centring and Adaptive Cruise Control. Its digital engineering is unparalleled, with three times the number of sender-receiver signals compared to previous Rolls-Royce models. The car’s Decentralised
Intelligence system processes data closer to its source, enabling rapid and precise responses to road and weather conditions. With over 141,200 sender-receiver variables, each with dedicated controls and sub-variables accounting for various factors, the Spectre ensures quick adaptation to driver inputs and changing road conditions.
One of the Spectre’s engineering highlights is its Planar Suspension System, an evolution of the acclaimed system introduced in the Ghost. Combining specially developed hardware with high-speed processing capabilities, this system delivers Rolls-Royce’s renowned “magic carpet ride.” The increased torsional rigidity of the Spectre’s structure eliminates the need for an upper wishbone damper, while automatic decoupling of the anti-roll bars on straight roads and precise adjustments during cornering ensure exceptional stability and comfort.
Spectre represents a groundbreaking achievement in engineering and design for Rolls-Royce. As the world’s first ultra-luxury electric super coupe, it embodies the company’s commitment to an electric future without compromising on the hallmark elements of a Rolls-Royce vehicle. With its revolutionary architecture, all-electric drivetrain, and advanced technologies, the Spectre sets a new standard for luxury electric vehicles. Rolls-Royce’s vision of a future without internal combustion engines is becoming a reality, and the Spectre paves the way for the brand’s complete transition to fully electric vehicles by 2030.
