Emma Walmsley The Remarkable CEO Of GSK Provides Her Top 5 Tips For Becoming A More Effective Business Leader

2 | The Executive Magazine

T

The recent acknowledgment of Dame Emma Walmsley as one of Fortune’s “100 Most Powerful Women in Business”, securing a notable 7th position, has spotlighted her among the leading figures in the global corporate sector. This recognition not only bears testimony to her leadership acumen but also highlights her substantial impact in the pharmaceutical industry as the CEO of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Emma’s voyage to the pinnacle of corporate leadership commenced well before her association with GSK. With a 17-year tenure at L’Oreal, traversing through various roles in Paris, London, New York, and notably as the head of L’Oreal’s consumer business in China, Emma was already a recognised figure in the corporate arena. A serendipitous networking lunch with Andrew Witty, then CEO of GSK, in 2010, marked a shift in her professional trajectory towards the pharmaceutical sector. Initially assuming the role of President of GSK’s global consumer healthcare business, Emma’s journey scaled new heights as she ascended to the position of CEO in 2017, becoming the first woman to lead a major pharmaceutical company. Emma’s time at the helm of GSK has been marked by transformative initiatives. In her inaugural year, she initiated a strategic review of GSK’s operations that led to the divestment of its rare disease unit. Her vision was longterm; she spearheaded a global restructuring program with the aim of saving more than $500 million annually by 2021. The savings were earmarked for bolstering Research & Development (R&D) and funding a pipeline of new product ventures. A hallmark move during her tenure was the bold $13 billion acquisition of Novartis’s 36% stake in GSK Consumer Health, which amplified GSK’s footprint in the consumer health sector. In 2023, at the STAT Summit, Emma articulated GSK’s narrative of reinvention, symbolising the divestiture of its consumer division as a strategic milestone in GSK’s evolution towards a more focused pharmaceutical entity. Moreover, her belief in fortifying the pharma division through the listing of the consumer health business underscores her strategic foresight to optimise GSK’s portfolio for sustainable growth. Emma’s recognition on Fortune’s list is more than just a personal triumph. It symbolises a broader narrative of the rising influence of women in what has traditionally been a male-dominated corporate sector. It also exemplifies the global recognition of British leadership in the business sphere, further enriched by Emma’s unique blend of experiences across diverse cultural and professional landscapes. The saga of Dame Emma Walmsley is a blend of resilient leadership, visionary strategies, and a pioneering spirit. Her journey elucidates the boundless possibilities awaiting those who dare to traverse unchartered territories, making her a modern-day emblem of female leadership in the global business arena. Through her achievements, she continues to inspire a generation of leaders, demonstrating that with tenacity and a forward-thinking approach, one can indeed alter the course of traditional business paradigms.

Embrace Continuous Learning “Evolving markets demand an evolving leadership approach. A good leader exemplifies the essence of continuous learning. As a CEO, nurturing a culture of continuous learning and personal development can drive innovation and adaptability within the organisation.”

Bold Decision-Making “Leading a corporation, especially through turbulent waters, requires a propensity for bold decision-making. My tenure at GSK required bold decisions like the acquisition of Novartis's stake in GSK Consumer Health and the strategic divestment of certain business units. These decisions reflect a willingness to take calculated risks that are aligned with the long-term vision of the company.”

Engage in Strategic Visioning “Having a clear and compelling vision is crucial. My restructuring initiatives at GSK were underpinned by a long-term vision to rejuvenate the company’s R&D capabilities and streamline its focus towards core pharmaceutical endeavours. As a CEO, articulating and rallying the organization around a shared vision can foster alignment and propel collective action towards desired outcomes.”

Foster an Inclusive Culture “The value of diversity and inclusion in the corporate sphere can't be overlooked. Inclusive leadership not only enriches decisionmaking but also cultivates a culture where varied perspectives are valued and leveraged for the betterment of the organisation.”

Engage with Transparency & Authenticity “Effective leadership is often grounded in authenticity and transparent communication. Being open about challenges, sharing insights into strategic decisions, and maintaining a twoway dialogue with stakeholders can build trust and enhance the collective resilience and agility of the organization.”

Exclusive Interview

Caroline Bouvet Vice President of Products & Partnerships at Amex

M

Meet Caroline Bouvet, the Vice President of Products and Partnerships at American Express (Amex). With a shift from consulting at Accenture to a key role at Amex, Bouvet’s 16year journey symbolises growth, adaptability, and a devotion to

Fast forward 16 years and I’ve worked across a number of different roles at Amex where I’ve had the opportunity to learn, lead and grow. I’ve worked across parts of the business including strategy, marketing, business development, product management and brand partnerships, with increasing levels of challenge and responsibility. In my current role at Amex, I lead the UK product and partnerships teams. It’s an incredibly exciting and varied role which involves overseeing and enhancing our UK products, including our card benefits such as pre-sale tickets for all our Cardmembers to events like the London Film Festival.

customer-centric excellence.

In this exclusive interview, Bouvet shares her transitions within Amex, shedding light on how the company navigates the changing consumer behaviour to not only retain but captivate a diverse customer base. She delves into the evolution of consumer spending, the rising preference for experiential rewards, and how American Express continues to redefine value for its cardholders. Join us as we explore the strategic evolution of American Express, Bouvet’s forward-thinking leadership, and how fostering internal talent has been instrumental in maintaining a leading position in the financial services sector, all through the insightful lens of Caroline Bouvet’s enriching journey at Amex. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER TO DATE AND YOUR ROLE AT AMERICAN EXPRESS I started in consulting, holding various strategic and IT positions at Accenture. It was during this time that I first crossed paths with American Express. I was immediately drawn to the company, not just for its exceptional people, but also for its collaborative and supportive culture and its ability to continually evolve and diversify the business; I felt like these were the right ingredients for a unique and meaningful career journey.

4 | The Executive Magazine

I’m also responsible for managing our strategic partnerships, with brands like British Airways, whom we’ve partnered with for over 15 years on our popular BA Amex Cards. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? My favourite thing about working at American Express is undoubtedly the people, each of whom contribute to a culture of strong relationships. Even though I’ve held a wide range of roles, the common thread has always been the incredible individuals I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside, whether as mentors, peers or team members, many of whom have become enduring friends. Just as Amex has evolved its business over the last 170 years, I’ve also been able to continuously evolve, gain valuable experiences and grow my career, thanks to the constant support and encouragement I’ve received. Now, as a leader, I try to pay this forward by fostering an inclusive culture, where learning, development and growth is continuous within my own teams. This is one of the reasons why we are able to attract talent and why so many people, myself included, choose to stay with the company.

TELL US ABOUT THE GROWTH AND DIVERSIFICATION OF THE AMERICAN EXPRESS CONSUMER PRODUCT PORTFOLIO AND EXPERIENCES, OVER YOUR TIME AT AMEX. WHAT HAVE BEEN THE DRIVERS BEHIND THIS? Throughout my time at Amex the company’s customers and product portfolio have constantly evolved. On the one hand we’ve got an incredibly loyal, high-spending customer base who’ve been with us for a long time – some have even been with us for 60 years since we first introduced our credit cards to the UK! On the other hand, our customer base is growing across different segments, with Gen Z and millennials representing our fastest growing new customer segment. Our customers don’t all want the same thing, but what they do have in common is that rewards and experiences matter to them. As a result, we continuously focus on broadening our offering, including evolving our products, rewards and experiences, to make sure we’re catering to all of our audiences. As an example, we introduced our Amazon Business Credit Card to serve our business customers who regularly shop through the e-commerce platform, whilst our Vitality Credit Card rewards more health-conscious customers. We know our customers love new experiences and making memories by going to events with their friends and family. And so through Amex Experiences, all of our Cardmembers, whichever Card they choose, have access to pre-sale tickets, as well as the best seats and exclusive offers at some of the UK’s most sought-after events – whether that’s film, sports, music, theatre or dining. I’m incredibly proud of the long-standing partnerships we have here, with organisations such as The British Film Institute, the All England Tennis Club and the National Theatre. Our customers really value the access we provide and the diverse and relevant content these partnerships continue to offer them. HOW HAS CONSUMER SPENDING EVOLVED DURING YOUR TIME AT AMERICAN EXPRESS? Consumer spending has undergone a significant transformation over the past decade, with a considerable shift towards online and mobile payments. As well as this, loyalty schemes, which have long been part of Amex’s benefits portfolio, have now become an integral part of the consumer landscape, with research we commissioned earlier this year showing more than half of shoppers prefer brands that offer such programmes.

experiences portfolio; we know how much this matters to our Cardmembers. HOW HAVE CONSUMERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF VALUE, AS WELL AS EXPECTATIONS AROUND REWARDS AND RECOGNITION SHIFTED? Value means different things to different people, and we know rewards, benefits and offers are intrinsically linked to value. But different customers want different things, which is why at Amex we continue to grow and diversify our offering. We’ve always been dedicated to offering best-in-class rewards for various aspects of people’s lives, such as travel, dining, and shopping. So for our Cardmembers that love luxury products, our Platinum Card provides £100 in statement credits every year at Harvey Nicholls. With our Membership Rewards, Gold Cardmembers can enjoy £5 back on their Deliveroo orders, twice every month. Experiences have also gained prominence, with our research finding that 74% of consumers now favour spending their money on experiences over products. We continue to expand our offering in this space, including more premium experiences such as trips to the Monaco Grand Prix and global music festivals like Coachella. New partnerships and experiences, such as those with Wimbledon and BST Hyde Park, also reflect the company’s commitment to tapping into our new customers’ passion points. This year Amex also hosted the official All Points East ‘Amex Afters’ event headlined by iconic British rapper, Little Simz. Of course something I’m proud of as a company is the best-inclass customer service, trust, security, and consumer protection we provide. We’re always there to pick up the phone and we think it’s these somewhat unseen benefits that build the foundation of customer loyalty and satisfaction. HOW DOES AMEX CONTINUE TO KEEP AHEAD OF NEW CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS AND ATTRACT NEW GENERATIONS OF CUSTOMERS? Our commitment to staying relevant, innovative and customercentric means we can continue to attract new generations of customers while retaining the loyalty of existing ones, and is something I’m incredibly proud to be a part of.

Shoppers have also become increasingly motivated by experiences, in many cases these are seen as just as important as, or more important than the products themselves. The expectation for personalised, memorable interactions with a brand start at the point of purchase and extend right through to customers seeking out innovative, experiential in-store experiences.

As a company we constantly look for new ways to surprise and delight our customers by expanding our brand presence and collaborations. We’re always engaging with our diverse customer base through research, customer surveys and external trend analysis to understand and anticipate their evolving needs. Our customers know that when they are with Amex they can expect to be rewarded with access to the most sought-after benefits, rewards, experiences and offers.

Ultimately, shoppers are looking beyond transactions and are placing greater value on moments and opportunities to enrich their lives. That’s another reason why we place such an emphasis on the continued evolution of our rewards programme and

Anticipating our customers’ needs and staying ahead in helping them achieve their aspirations is an exciting challenge. There will always be more to do, but getting it right is incredibly rewarding and is why I love my job.

Public Sector Operations Held Back By Manual Processes & Legacy Systems A Revealing Report By Advanced Unveils That Over Half Of The Public Sector's Finance & Spend Management Echelons Are Embroiled In Manual Budgeting Processes

I

In An Era Propelled By Digital Innovation, A Significant Portion Of Public Sector Operations Remains Anchored To Traditional, Manual Processes—A Reality That Not Only Hampers Efficiency But Also Stifles The Potential For Transformative Growth. A new report unveiled a concerning reality – 50.7% of public sector finance and spend management professionals are mired in manual budgeting processes. This finding comes from the ‘Bridging the Digital Divide’ report, orchestrated by software and solutions provider, Advanced. The insights from the report are set to take centre stage in a live summit aimed at delving into the challenges

confronting finance and procurement professionals within local and central governmental bodies. Driving digital momentum in governmental workspaces With local authorities bracing for a sharp £3.2bn budget deficit in 2023, exacerbated by escalating energy costs and the surging business expenditures, the one-day summit seeks to probe how digital transformation could be the beacon for sustaining the delivery of crucial frontline services. The summit, open to public sector personnel, will reflect on the ramifications of the UK Government’s digital and data stride, ‘Transforming for a Digital Future’, unveiled in June 2022. The initiative underscores a swift digital metamorphosis of public services, fostering a data-driven decision-making milieu, thereby

Furthermore, 32.3% harbour reservations regarding the timeliness of their finance and spend data, underscoring the exigency for Cloud-based solutions offering real-time, precise data access. About 35.4% grapple with data access issues, a hurdle to efficiency and productivity, crafting a vexing professional realm.

Mark Dewell, the Senior Vice President, Education, Government & Social Housing at Advanced, articulated, “With falling real term budgets in the public sector, professionals working in finance and spend management are tasked with a seemingly impossible challenge – to provide more, with less. The government has recognised that adopting digital solutions can enable more efficiency, greater productivity, and allow finance and spend management professionals to be more involved in strategic decisions based on accurate data. Digital is the key to maintaining the delivery of key public services and our summit will help people understand how to do that within their own organisations.”

A conclave for gleaning insights and exchanging experiences The summit is engineered to bridge finance and procurement strategies with organisational objectives. Thought leaders will impart their perspectives on nurturing innovation and fostering collaboration, alongside sharing invaluable takeaways from past experiences in instigating a cultural shift. Helmed by seasoned journalist and ex-BBC anchor Denise Mahoney, the day will unfurl with a panel discussion featuring

The summit, ‘Powering the World of Work In Government’, is slated for 29th November at the State Rooms & Rooftop Terrace, 30 Euston Square, London, NW1 2FB. Registrations are now open.

A sector tethered to bygone practices The report shed light on several sticking points: •

A significant 26% of public sector finance teams are not harnessing digital spend management solutions to their potential, consequently impeding value deliverance to taxpayers. About 32.3% are entangled in manual supplier management processes, thereby curtailing the efficacy of their spending budgets. A staggering 47.7% are ensnared in manual forecasting, while 41.5% are generating reports manually, thereby monopolising time that could be channelled towards more strategic pursuits.

Beyond Luxury Discover The Efficiency of Private Aviation

I

In the world of global business, time is a commodity as valuable as any tangible asset. Private aviation has transitioned from being perceived solely as a luxurious mode of transport to a pragmatic solution for optimising time and efficiency in both professional and personal spheres. BitLux CEO, Kyle Patel, underscores that the essence of private aviation lies not in the aircraft, but in the mechanism of saving precious time and enhancing the private aviation journey. Hard metrics are the driving force behind most business, but the subtle yet critical value of time often goes unnoticed. Its significance intertwines with crucial life events, whether it’s punctuality for significant milestones, attending pivotal business engagements, or merely recapturing personal hours. This notion

12 | The Executive Magazine

shifts the narrative surrounding private aviation from a discourse of luxury to one of practicality and efficacy. For Kyle Patel, CEO of global private jet provider BitLux, the essence of saving time for a client elevates private aviation to a distinctive tier. “Our product isn’t the plane. It’s not flying the plane. Nor is it giving the plane. Our product is the process behind saving your time and optimising the flow of private aviation in your life,” The benefits of private aviation substantially influence how individuals manage their time. Predominantly, it allows for adept travel. The autonomy in scheduling, departing, and arriving without the constraints of commercial flight timetables is a paradigm shift for professionals, enabling multiple meetings in a single day and expedited international voyages. Moreover, the fiscal aspect of time is quantifiable. The monetary savings from a trip truncated from five days, as necessitated by commercial air travel, to merely two days via a private jet is

Business

substantial. The time economised transcends from professional commitments, to attendance at family gatherings. The duo of rest and productivity further accentuate time efficiency – condensed travel days yield more rest and augmented productivity. Private aviation alleviates the fatigue associated with commercial airport procedures and prolonged layovers. Additionally, punctual arrival is a given with private jet travel. The meticulous adherence to schedules and the diminution of unexpected delays or disruptions are monumental benefits for those with tightly packed itineraries, particularly when venturing to remote locales bereft of commercial aviation connectivity. INVESTING IN TIME Chartering a private jet is much more than just comfort; it epitomises an investment in time. Patel delineates the prospect for clients to curtail travel time by over 50% when compared to commercial aviation. A prominent factor is the access to an

extensive network of over 5,000 airports, a stark contrast to the approximately 500 airports serviced by commercial carriers, thus facilitating nonstop travel without the needless layovers. “All that saved time can be invested in myriad ways – whether endeavouring to accomplish more business, celebrating a silver wedding anniversary, attending a ball game, or simply recuperating. Essentially, chartering a private jet is investing in time; hours, days, and even weeks reclaimed over the span of a year due to the flexibility afforded by executive flight,” says Patel. In summation, the burgeoning demand for private aviation underscores its pivotal role as a time-saving asset and a catalyst for meaningful life engagements. It equips individuals and entities to maximise their time, creating indelible memories and fostering a positive global impact. The trajectory of private aviation hints at an even more transformative future, redefining our perception and utilisation of air travel.

content creators to achieve celebrity status, broadening the scope of fame beyond traditional media.

In the realm of high-net-worth individuals and executives, discerning taste transcends mere financial metrics, evolving into an art form. This sophisticated interplay of aesthetics, influence, and value permeates various aspects of life, including fashion, real estate, lifestyle, travel, and gastronomy. The allure of luxury is not merely material but a deeper representation of identity and meaning. As we delve into the changing landscape of wealth, especially among Generation Z, it becomes evident that these shifts reflect a broader transformation in how wealth is perceived and valued.

The New Definition of Wealth: Influence and Authenticity

The Intricate Appeal of High Net Worth Tastes

The Implications of a Disposable Lifestyle

Central to understanding high-net-worth tastes is recognising the complex factors that drive these preferences. For these individuals, the appeal of an item or experience is often rooted in its story, heritage, or uniqueness. Warren Buffett’s assertion, “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get,” encapsulates this mindset. The allure lies in craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail, and exclusivity.

Generation Z’s inclination towards fast fashion, on-demand services, and digital content has fostered a disposable lifestyle. This approach, while convenient, raises concerns about sustainability and environmental impact, particularly in the context of fast fashion and single-use plastics.

Influence and Its Impact on High Net Worth Tastes

As we explore the preferences of high-net-worth individuals, it’s clear that their tastes are dynamic and evolving. The future of high-net-worth taste points towards a blend of exclusivity, sustainability, and personalised experiences. There is a growing emphasis on experiences, authenticity, and social responsibility, moving away from traditional notions of luxury. Personalised and unique experiences are becoming the new hallmarks of exclusivity.

Influence plays a pivotal role in shaping high-net-worth tastes. Celebrities, fashion icons, and business leaders often set trends and dictate tastes. High-net-worth consumers look to these figures for inspiration, with endorsements by renowned personalities significantly elevating the desirability of products. The Essence of Style For high-net-worth individuals, style is a personal statement reflecting their values, personality, and aspirations. It’s less about chasing trends and more about curating a unique and timeless aesthetic. Coco Chanel’s famous words, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same,” resonate deeply in this community, underscoring the enduring nature of personal style. The Democratisation of Fame The advent of digital media has revolutionised the concept of fame. Social media platforms have enabled influencers and

For Generation Z, wealth encompasses more than financial assets. Influence and authenticity, particularly among social media influencers who foster genuine connections with their audience, are increasingly valued. The ability to sway opinions and drive change is a significant aspect of wealth in the digital era. Experiential Value in High Net Worth Tastes In high-net-worth circles, the notion of value extends beyond monetary worth to the enrichment experiences provide. Fine dining, exotic travel, and cultural immersion are sought after not just for their cost but for the depth of experience they offer.

Looking Ahead: The Future of High Net Worth Tastes

The integration of technology in luxury services, such as AI-driven recommendations and virtual concierge services, is anticipated to further personalise and enhance the luxury experience. In conclusion, the world of high-net-worth taste is continuously evolving, with change being the only constant. This future is shaped by a rich tapestry of exclusivity, sustainability, personalisation, and global influences. Leonardo da Vinci’s words, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” aptly describe the essence of highnet-worth taste, emphasising elegance, meaning, and value. This approach not only allows individuals to enjoy the finest life offers but also enriches their narratives and cultural legacy.

LongNet Introducing

From

Microsoft

Microsoft Unveils The Future Of AI Chatbots With Longnet. An Advanced Chatbot That Can Ingest The Entire Internet At Lightning Speed. With 1-Billion-Token Capacity & Mind-Blowing Efficiency, LongNet Is Redefining The Possibilities Of Generative AI Models.

W

Welcome to a new era of AI sophistication, where the impossible becomes reality and chatbots are transformed into knowledgehungry geniuses. Microsoft has done it again, pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence with their latest architectural marvel, LongNet. Picture a chatbot that can digest the entire Internet in a heartbeat. The LongNet architecture promises an astonishing 1-billiontoken capacity, equivalent to a human’s lifetime of reading, all processed in a mere half-second. The most advanced AI chatbot in the world, Claude, pales in comparison with its 100,000 token limit, which is a mere fraction of LongNet’s capacity. So, what makes LongNet so extraordinary? It all boils down to the revolutionary Transformers at its core. These awe-inspiring structures lie at the heart of the most cutting-edge Natural Language Processing (NLP) models, such as the ever-popular ChatGPT, and are even finding their way into Computer Vision (CV) applications.

20 | The Executive Magazine

AI Special

The genius of Transformers lies in their attention mechanism, enabling machines to grasp context like never before. Picture words in a sequence talking and collaborating, leading to a deep understanding of the text’s true meaning. It’s like a symphony of words, orchestrated by LongNet’s self-attention mechanism, forging connections and building context for each token. But traditional attention is quite the resource hog. It’s computationally expensive, leading to a quadratic relationship between text length and costs. However, LongNet has shattered this barrier by introducing dilated attention. Unlike traditional attention or sparse transformers, LongNet optimises word communications, keeping the costs linear even for sequences as vast as 1 billion tokens. That’s 10,000 Harry Potter books read in just half a second. By cleverly sparsifying vectors, LongNet manages to be both efficient and powerful. It dynamically adjusts segment lengths and dilated rates, ensuring that words converse meaningfully across the sequence. And the result? Unsurprisingly, it’s mind-boggling. LongNet maintains perplexity – a measure of prediction certainty – while being more cost-effective and even outperforming previous models. But why does LongNet’s ability to process extensive sequences matter so much? Well, like us, machines perform better with more context. Imagine asking a chatbot to summarise a book, armed with only a single chapter.

In-context learning is where LongNet truly shines. Unlike relying solely on pre-trained knowledge, LongNet is adept at “learning on the go.” By feeding real-time information into the model, you get more accurate, curated responses. The chatbot becomes a dynamic expert, adapting to new data as needed. This is a huge leap forward for AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) aspirations. Machines need the capacity to process unlimited sequence sizes to approach human-level comprehension. LongNet opens the door to AGI by navigating information-heavy environments with remarkable efficiency, focusing only on what truly matters. The future is bright, where LongNet’s dilated attention leads to image models capable of processing massive images without getting lost in the details. Soon, they’ll identify a city from a gigabyte-sized image without scrutinising each pixel. This transformative power extends to other innovations, such as I-JEPA, MegaByte, and Sparse transformers, ushering in a generational leap in AI capabilities. With LongNet as the harbinger of advancement, AGI is no longer just a distant dream. Microsoft’s visionary architecture is rewriting the rules of AI, setting a path to a future where machines and humanity merge harmoniously, forging the way to unparalleled intelligence.

Brace For Impact Preparing Businesses for the AI Revolution A new survey reveals that businesses are racing against the clock, with only three years to prepare for the transformative impact of AI in the workplace. The Executive Magazine speaks with Grant Price, CEO at YOHO Workplace Strategy and Vikki Sly from Coincover to find out more

A

A recent survey conducted among 600 UK human resources (HR) managers and directors reveals that businesses anticipate needing three years to adequately prepare for the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace. Interestingly, despite the preparation time line, an overwhelming 99% of respondents believe that AI will bring numerous benefits.

The survey respondents had a balanced outlook on the benefits of AI. They anticipated improvements in decision support (32%), productivity and efficiency (30%), automation of routine tasks (30%), increases in innovation and creativity (30%), and better allocation of resources and time management (29%).

The survey findings indicate that nearly 40% of HR professionals believe it will take at least three years before they are fully prepared for the influence of AI on their roles. Only 15% of respondents feel they will be ready within a year. To embrace AI, around 40% of companies are investing in their technology teams, while 35.5% have already started trialling AI in their operations.

The survey indicated that the majority (82.5%) of HR executives are either aware or fully aware of AI’s potential impact on the job market. Over one-third (36.92%) anticipate more benefits than drawbacks.

When asked about the jobs most likely to be impacted by AI, IT and technology jobs topped the list at 27%. This was followed by finance and accounting (23%), customer services and support (22%), sales and marketing (22%), and healthcare and media (21%).

Grant Price, CEO at YOHO Workplace Strategy, emphasised the significance of AI, stating, “AI has the potential to be the biggest disruptor of the way we work since the industrial revolution. Our research reveals that businesses are aware they won’t be fully prepared for the seismic changes AI will bring until three years from now. However, it’s crucial for them to start preparing now, considering the expected rapid evolution of AI.” Concerns surrounding AI in the workplace were also highlighted in the survey. The top five worries include a lack of human interaction (30%), over-dependence on technology (30%), technical issues (29%), ethical considerations (29%), and security and privacy concerns (29%).

26 | The Executive Magazine

Different age groups displayed varying concerns. Among senior executives aged 18 to 34, the primary apprehensions were reduced human interaction and increased dependence on technology (36.4%). In contrast, respondents aged 35 to 55 and over expressed greater fears regarding security and privacy (29%).

Price pressed on the need for quick adaptation to leverage AI’s capabilities, stating, “The winners will be those who pivot to leverage its capabilities the quickest, as AI enables the translation of data into actionable insight at speed.” Vikki Sly, Chief People Officer at Coincover, stressed the irreplaceable value of human skills, stating, “AI certainly has a massive role to play, but it won’t bring the level of soft skills and critical skills that only human brains can provide. Empathy, inclusivity, communication, and collaboration— AI will never be ‘human’ in that way.” Kate Bishop, Chief Human Resources Officer at IFS, emphasised the need for ethical guidelines and investment in up-skilling the existing workforce. She stated, “HR leaders will be called upon to develop ethical guidelines and govern AI’s use. We also need to acknowledge job transformation—some roles will be lost, but others will be created. And we must invest in up-skilling our existing workforces.” As businesses navigate the era of AI, it is crucial to strike a balance between harnessing AI’s capabilities and preserving the unique human skills and judgment required in various aspects of the workplace.

Velo Bianco

The Wedding Industry Disruptor

Velo Bianco Is An Emerging Luxury Bridal Boutique, But It's Already Making Waves In The Wedding Sector. The Executive Magazine Speaks With Founder Aleks Pakulniewicz On How She's Challenging The Traditional Model, & Bringing Luxury Wedding Dresses To The Modern Bride

I

It’s not often we see innovation in the bridal sector. Buying a wedding dress is a tradition, an event, an experience, but more increasingly, it can be a hassle. This was evidently clear during the pandemic. Lockdown saw the closure of non-essential shops, and bridal stores were no exception. During this time, Aleks Pakulniewicz saw an opportunity – but her idea for an online-only wedding brand was already in the making. Aleks tells us: “I started Velo Bianco before the pandemic, but it was lockdown that really helped me to realise my vision. But it wasn’t easy, I was challenging the entire industry, and asking brides to change the way they bought a wedding dress. It’s one of the most important purchases for the big day – so convincing a bride to put her trust in us and buy her dream dress without seeing it first was a major hurdle. This was the perception that I had to change, and a lot of people told me it couldn’t be done, or was even a bad idea.” But Aleks was determined to prove that high-value items could be sold more efficiently online: “There’s so many advantages to eCommerce in the luxury sector that consumers are now realising. Especially in the wedding sector. A bride is presented with infinitely more options than before. Previously she would need to decide on the style of dress, the designer she preferred, and find a shop that stocks them. She would need to book an appointment, attend multiple fittings, and wait an exorbitant amount of time for her dress to be made. In the year or two she has to wait for her dress, a lot can change. “The modern bride knows exactly what she wants. Our

clientele is made up of busy women, they don’t have much free time. They’re decisive, well travelled, independent, and they know what they want. We’ve also noticed the wedding date is set much sooner than it used to be. To meet this demand, we have made innovations in dressmaking, one being that we offer standard sizing on all of our designs.” Velo Bianco hand makes all of the dresses to order in their European ateliers. Fabric is sourced from all over the world, and because of the standard sizing options, the turnaround time is around 12 weeks. This is a huge difference to the industry norm. “It was important for me to be able to provide our clients with the latest bridal trends quicker and easier. This works perfectly for last minute brides and couples travelling to their dream destination wedding, without having to plan years in advance.” “Dressmaking has been in my family for generations. My grandmother was a talented seamstress for over 50 years, and it was her legacy that inspired me to create something of my own, and make her proud. We take those artisnal seamstress skills, and apply them to modern tailoring and luxurious fabrics. We adopt the latest technology to help us create, market and deliver our dresses worldwide. We have also innovated with our unique bridal accessories such as our range of overskirts, which allows the bride to have two different looks on her wedding day.” Now, Velo Bianco is an online success story. The brand is growing internationally, with their exquisite creations being shipped to over 15 countries. The plans to expand the business are led by organic growth. “I don’t want the company to become overwhelming. I want to make sure that every single bride feels special, and has an exceptional experience. Quality control is key, and so is the aftercare. By focussing on remaining as a boutique online store, and staying true to our roots, I can ensure that every single dress is made perfectly.”

In a dazzling exclusive event held in Miami, Maserati, the renowned Italian automaker, showcased its impressive new lineup of supercars, further solidifying its position in the high-performance automotive sector. The event, characterised by Maserati’s quintessential blend of luxury and performance, also featured a surprise unveiling: a luxury SUV that promises to redefine the standards in its category. Maserati’s commitment to innovation and elegance was evident in every model presented. The lineup exuded a perfect balance between advanced engineering and aesthetic sophistication, traits that are emblematic of the Trident brand. Each vehicle showcased represented the pinnacle of automotive design and engineering, catering to the discerning tastes of luxury car enthusiasts.

This newest addition to the Maserati family, the Grecale SUV, exemplifies the brand’s expansion into new segments, offering a unique combination of comfort, style, and performance. Designed to compete with the best in its class, this SUV is poised to become a new benchmark for luxury and versatility in the high-end automotive market. Maserati’s strategic move to introduce these new models aligns with its broader vision for growth and innovation. The company continues to push boundaries, embracing new technologies and design philosophies to deliver an unparalleled driving experience. This latest unveiling in Miami not only reinforces Maserati’s prestigious heritage but also signals its ambitious path forward in the competitive world of luxury automobiles. The inevitable shift into electrification is already underway, with each model being future-proofed to accept all-new electric drivetrains and battery configurations, without compromising on design or balance. Bill Peffer, CEO of Maserati Americas, exclusively tells The Executive Magazine:

“We’re a performance car brand. But when it comes to electrification, the good news is that the upfront engineering and engineering thoughtfulness of these new products allows for flexible powertrain development. So while each of these models have a version of the Nettuno engine technology that’s designed exclusively for Maserati, we’ve also planned full electric variances of each car, beginning with the GranTurismo in a few months. We needed to stay true to the ethos of the brand which is performance, and so we didn’t want to compromise. With some of the competition, the driver sits on top of the battery, in our case they sit around the battery. So what that does is not only provide the weight distribution advantage, and give you that perfect balance, but it also allows for a configuration where you don’t compromise the style of the car.”

Lamborghini's Latest Creation, The Electrified Revuelto, Makes A Grand Entrance With Its Impressive Top Speed Of 217 Mph & 1,001 Horsepower, Offering 13 Driving Modes

L

Lamborghini, the unrivalled champion of automotive excellence, unveils its latest masterpiece, the Revuelto. Blending raw power, striking design, and a daring leap into hybrid technology, this electrifying marvel shatters expectations and sets a new benchmark for performance. With 1,001 horsepower at its disposal and a seductive fusion of a V-12 engine and electric motors, the Revuelto roars onto the scene, proving that sustainability and mind-blowing speed can coexist in perfect harmony. Get ready to witness the birth of a new era as Lamborghini redefines what it means to be a hybrid supercar. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann emphasises that the company is now focused on four key aspects: sustainability, digitalisation, urbanisation, and geopolitics. This shift in direction is quite a departure for the automaker that has long been synonymous with visually stunning cars that captivate car enthusiasts worldwide for the past six decades.

The world that the all-new Revuelto enters is almost unrecognisable compared to the era when Lamborghini’s iconic 350 GT took the automotive stage in the swinging ’60s. The transition of legacy car manufacturers to electrification isn’t always an enlightening sight, and Lamborghini’s first fully electric car is still a few years away. Thus, the Revuelto acts as a transitional step, bridging the gap between Lamborghini’s renowned internal combustion engines and the emerging automotive landscape. The question remains: is it enough? Indeed, it is. The Revuelto is a plug-in hybrid, but Lamborghini has ingeniously employed the technology to suit the extravagant nature of this Italian sports car manufacturer. With a record-breaking annual turnover of over €2 billion last year, Lamborghini claims that the Revuelto is not just a hybrid but an HPEV (high-performance electrified vehicle), a clever semantic twist to distinguish it from conventional hybrids. Performance has been increased by 30 percent while reducing emissions by the same amount. However, this hybrid aims not only to enhance performance and reduce emissions but also to expand the car’s dynamic capabilities. The Revuelto is an intriguing machine with a sophisticated nervous system. Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, explains, “Everything started with the V-12. We wanted a hybrid system that enhances the perception of the V-12, preserving its identity. The hybrid system is there to support and empower the driver, enabling them to go faster and, above all, improving handling. You won’t even realise it’s a hybrid. While driving, it feels like a much faster naturally aspirated V-12 and a lighter car thanks to torque vectoring. It feels agile and precise.” At its core, the Revuelto boasts a naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V-12 engine aided by three electric motors, two of which are mounted on the front axle, and the third integrated into the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The e-motor on the transmission also serves as the starter motor and generator. Numerous modifications, such as a 180-degree rotation of the engine in the bay to accommodate the gearbox and e-motor, have increased the output to 814 brake horsepower at 9,250 rpm. Additionally, the engine now weighs 17 kilograms less, coming in at 218 kilograms. A 3.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, comprising 108 water-cooled pouch cells, is housed in the central tunnel. While it can be fully charged in just 30 minutes using a 7-kW power supply, the battery pack is more likely to be recharged through regenerative braking. Traditional automotive enthusiasts may not be ready to witness a Lamborghini hypercar tethered to an electric cord, while electric vehicle enthusiasts may perceive this hybrid as a cautious move. The front axle electric motors are oil-cooled axial flux units, chosen for their compactness and high power and torque density compared to radial flux motors. Each motor generates 110 kW of power and weighs 18.5 kilograms. Although the Revuelto has an electric range of approximately eight miles and can be driven silently in Città mode, Lamborghini emphasises that the electric technology primarily aims to enhance the car’s performance and high-speed dynamics. Alongside the third e-motor above the gearbox, the Revuelto achieves a remarkable total power output of 1,001 bhp, enabling it to reach a top speed of 217 mph and accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds. However, specific details regarding emissions and fuel consumption have yet to be disclosed. The Revuelto aims to be a more accessible Lamborghini compared to its predecessors. With the introduction of hybridisation, the car presents numerous possibilities to engage and embolden the driver. It offers a total of 13 distinct drive modes, including new additions such as Recharge, Hybrid, and Performance. In EV-only Città mode, the maximum power is limited to 180

bhp, while Corsa mode unleashes the full potential of over 1,000 bhp, with the e-axle optimised for maximum torque vectoring and all-wheel drive. Furthermore, the Revuelto promises to deliver enhanced agility and a more driver-friendly experience, making it more approachable on the limit. Although Lamborghini avoids labelling it as a “drift” mode, Sport mode with dialled-back stability control reportedly allows skilled drivers to indulge in exhilarating slides. To ensure a surprisingly comfortable ride, the Revuelto incorporates magnetic dampers, a new suspension system, and advanced control software. The stiffer front and rear anti-roll bars, coupled with bespoke Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires, contribute to improved handling. The braking system features new-generation carbon ceramics, with 410mm diameter discs and ten pistons at the front, and 390-mm discs with four pistons at the rear. The e-axle and rear e-motor actively contribute to the braking process, allowing more effective battery recharging through regenerative braking.

Lamborghini’s expertise in carbon fibre technology is evident in the Revuelto’s new “monofuselage” chassis, drawing inspiration from the aviation sector. The lightweight chassis is approximately 10 percent lighter than its Aventador predecessor while boasting a 25 percent increase in stiffness, with a remarkable value of 40,000 NM per degree. Crafting the new tub takes 290 hours, compared to 170 hours for the previous model. Lamborghini skilfully employs various types of composite materials throughout the car’s structure. Forged carbon is utilised in the front crash cones, offering double the energy absorption of the Aventador’s aluminium counterpart at half the weight. In addition to its improved performance, forged carbon is more sustainable and generates less waste. However, pre-preg carbon fibre, renowned for its labour-intensive handlaid-up and laminated process, remains the preferred choice for visible areas of the vehicle, as exposed and painted carbon fibre serves as a testament to the artistic expression of supercar design.

Lamborghini’s recalibrated Dinamica Veicolo (LDVI) system, equipped with accelerometers and gyroscope sensors positioned at the car’s centre of gravity, constantly monitors real-time data on lateral, longitudinal, and vertical loads, as well as body roll, pitch, and yaw. The system now includes torque vectoring monitoring, further enhancing the Revuelto’s agility and performance. Notably, the car’s aerodynamic design plays a crucial role, generating 66 percent more downforce than the Aventador. Key aerodynamic features include a large front splitter, geometric-looking panels that direct air to the rear brakes and engine, and a distinctive roof design that channels airflow to a pop-up rear wing.

In terms of aesthetics, the Revuelto is an expression of Lamborghini’s distinctive design language. While it may not be as wild as some of its predecessors, the Revuelto still exudes a powerful and captivating presence. Its slightly elongated body is complemented by a black zig-zag element on the body side, cleverly diverting attention from the added length. The integration of buttresses connecting the roof to the rear wheel

Lifestyle

arches and the intricate panelling directing airflow add both visual appeal and functional aerodynamics. The iconic Y-shaped front light motif remains a signature feature, while the overall design of the front end exhibits a more refined and simplified approach. Mitja Borkert, the design boss at Lamborghini, takes pride in how his team has seamlessly incorporated the required cameras into the car’s design. The camera housings resemble missile launchers, adding a touch of aggression to the car’s exterior. However, the true visual spectacle lies in the open engine bay, which frames the magnificent V-12 engine like a work of art, leaving onlookers in awe. Stepping inside the Revuelto reveals a truly fabulous cockpit, arguably the finest in any Lamborghini to date. The redesigned steering wheel features a thinner rim, adorned with essential switchgear thoughtfully arranged for easy access. The Drive-mode button sits atop the left spar, while the EV button is conveniently positioned on the right. The configurable instrument screen is housed within a sleek binnacle, offering vital information to the driver. At the top of the central display, a large air vent adds a touch of drama, floating above a practical storage space. Storage has been an area of improvement for Lamborghini, as the Aventador previously lacked any space for personal belongings. However, the Revuelto addresses this concern by providing a designated

storage area for smartphones and even discreetly hidden cup holders. The screen content can be seamlessly swiped across to a display for the passenger, and the graphics are both coherent and crisply designed. The inclusion of physical buttons, such as the hazard warning light and start button, alongside the touchscreen controls ensures a tactile and intuitive user experience. Moreover, the Revuelto boasts 360-degree cameras, easing the typically challenging task of reverse parking a Lamborghini. The overall build quality and fit and finish of the early car prototypes have left a lasting impression. As for its name, “Revuelto,” it draws inspiration from a renowned fighting bull that gained fame in the arenas of Barcelona during the 1880s. While the English translation may be “mixed up,” Lamborghini’s CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, explains that it aptly represents how the company has blended the two essential aspects of the car— the relentless pursuit of performance and the commitment to sustainability. By embracing hybridisation as an interim step towards full electrification, Lamborghini aims to adapt and find innovative solutions to ensure its position as a super sports car manufacturer in an evolving automotive landscape. In conclusion, the Lamborghini Revuelto emerges as a persuasive transitional step for the iconic automaker. It successfully combines the electrification technology with Lamborghini’s signature performance and dynamic capabilities, all while introducing a more accessible and driver-friendly experience. With its breathtaking design, advanced engineering, and a focus on sustainability, the Revuelto paves the way for Lamborghini’s future endeavours in the new era of automotive excellence.

Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail

In A Grand Unveiling That Exudes Luxury And Finesse, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Presents The Magnificent La Rose Noire Droptail, A Masterful Work Of Coach-built Artistry That Captivates With Its Enigmatic Allure And Meticulous Craftsmanship

T

The exclusive debut of the RollsRoyce La Rose Noire Droptail transpired during an intimate gathering in proximity to Pebble Beach in California. This extraordinary vehicle stands as a testament to the harmonious convergence of treasured experiences, significant moments, and cherished objets d’art deeply revered by its proprietors – a cosmopolitan family renowned for their discernment and pursuit of unparalleled luxury. In fact, the Coachbuild designers have hailed the family’s exceptional talent for tasteful curation within their residences and their remarkable array of automobiles and fashion artifacts, recognising it as an art form in its own right. Inspired by the beguiling Black Baccara rose, an opulent and velvety bloom originating from France and beloved by the matriarch of the commissioning family, the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail showcases a dual-toned palette reflecting the essence of the flower. The initial hue, christened ‘True Love’, pays homage to the amorous sentiment that the client sought to encapsulate in this creation. The second, darker shade, named ‘Mystery’, draws inspiration from the rose’s enigmatic nature, which seemingly shifts in colour from various vantage points. The twin concepts of genuine affection and the enigma of exploration and voyage deeply resonated with the patrons throughout the commissioning journey.

The exterior of the La Rose Noire Droptail is adorned with the resplendent True Love red finish. Echoing the Black Baccara rose’s characteristics, this automobile’s appearance metamorphoses with the angle of observation. Achieving this sublime variance necessitated the innovation of an entirely novel paint process, painstakingly refined through 150 meticulous iterations. The foundation layer, cloaked in a meticulously guarded colour formula, serves as the base, overlaid with five coats of clear lacquer, each subtly tinted with varying tones of red. This distinctive dual-toned motif extends to the elegant brightwork of La Rose Noire Droptail, characterised by the Hydroshade finish – a liquid-like dark surface specially developed for this exclusive project. These elements are not merely painted; instead, a unique chrome electrolyte is introduced into the chrome plating procedure, codeposited onto the stainless-steel substrates, forming an exquisitely thin layer, akin to the breadth of a strand of spider silk. This dark yet luminous facade is mirrored in select metal details within the interior, meticulously hand-polished to achieve a sublime glossy sheen. The integration of a removable hard top offers the La Rose Noire Droptail a dual personality – without its roof, it morphs into a lithe open-top roadster; with the roof affixed, it assumes the role of a commanding and theatrical coupé. Tailored exclusively for the La Rose Noire, the roof boasts a uniquely low profile, further heightened by an accelerated and extended slope, contributing to its assertive and glamorous character. At its rear, an ingot bearing the motor car’s appellation makes its debut – a premier for the Rolls-Royce marque. The utterly Bespoke roof additionally features an electrochromic glass segment, which transitions to near-translucent opacity at the touch of

a button, inviting occupants to embrace the sky above. Evidencing the commissioning patrons’ meticulous attention to detail is exemplified in the intricate Pantheon grille vanes of the La Rose Noire Droptail. In a discreet yet artful touch, accents of True Love paint are delicately applied to the reverse surface of the vanes, visible only through indirect reflection. This discreet yet sophisticated touch extends to the intricately designed lower front air intake. This intricately detailed component was digitally conceived and then 3D printed using a lightweight composite, incorporating a remarkable 202 handpolished stainless-steel ingots, each painstakingly painted by hand in the True Love hue. An integral exterior feature lies in the treatment of the striking alloy wheels, treated with the alluring Mystery paint finish. Reminiscent of the flower itself, this finish projects a velvety blackness from a distance, but upon closer examination, the sun reveals a nuanced play of dark red undertones. The Mystery paint is meticulously applied over the entire wheel surface before undergoing a high-precision diamond milling process, where segments of the paint are skillfully removed, exposing flashes of the underlying alloy material, which are then meticulously polished. This treatment amplifies the wheel’s dynamic contours and its commanding 22-inch stature, establishing a powerful foundation for the Droptail’s commanding presence. An Opulent Combination of Craft and Glamour The pièce de résistance of this extraordinary motor car lies within its enveloping interior. Herein unfolds the most intricate expression of parquetry ever conceived by Rolls-Royce, a testament to nearly two years of meticulous development, intensive experimentation, and masterful manual artistry. The artistry materialises as an abstract depiction of cascading rose petals, meticulously formed from a staggering 1,603 pieces of black wood veneer triangles. The intricate pattern is forged from 1,070 impeccably symmetrical elements constituting the backdrop, and 533 asymmetrical red fragments adorning the composition as rose petals. The asymmetry was a deliberate design choice by the patrons, intending to evoke the organic scattering of petals found in nature. Forged from Black Sycamore wood sourced from France as an elegant nod to

Each of these elements is meticulously handcrafted within the Swiss atelier, collectively embodying the sole concrete representations of the Black Baccara Rose throughout the motor car.

The intricate masterpiece graces the motor car’s occupants, extending from the rear shawl panel and stretching through the doors onto the expansive fascia. The sheer level of concentration required for this assembly mandated that the single craftsman entrusted with this task could only work in one-hour sessions for a total of five hours each day, ensuring an unswerving focus for impeccable execution. This seasoned artisan, a Rolls-Royce veteran since their apprenticeship, toiled for weeks in absolute silence within a sound-insulated chamber to eliminate any potential distractions. The creation of this undoubtedly artistic endeavour spanned more than nine months.

An Opulent Culmination: A Commemorative Toast

The interior refinement extends to the two seats, adorned at the edges with a fusion of enigmatic red Mystery leather and the luminous True Love leather, each imbued with a subtle shimmer of copper, evoking the pearlescent texture of Black Baccara rose petals. An Extraordinary Timepiece: A Singular Collaboration with Audemars Piguet Adorning the fascia of the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is an integrated bespoke timepiece crafted by Audemars Piguet, an esteemed collaboration exclusively commissioned by the patrons. The 43mm Royal Oak Concept Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Large Date is equipped with a unique self-winding Calibre 4407 movement, featuring a flyback chronograph and a split-seconds mechanism. Meticulously tailored to echo the La Rose Noire’s colour scheme, the timepiece showcases red counters and a red inner bezel, casting a vivid contrast against the black ‘openworked’ dial embellished with rhodium-toned bevels. The seamless integration of this horological marvel was a formidable endeavour. The clients’ stipulation that the timepiece should be both mountable within the motor car and detachable for wrist wear was ingeniously resolved with a powered clasp mechanism, delicately unveiling the timepiece with the press of a button. Post detachment, the aperture on the fascia is veiled with an elegant titanium openworked blank head watch, enhanced with a whitegold coin featuring an intricate rose engraving, hand-sculpted by the

A slim and supple leather pouch ensconced within the door paniers houses both the strap and the blank head watch, safeguarding the strap while the timepiece graces the fascia.

To commemorate the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail, the discerning owners orchestrated an exclusive vintage of Champagne de Lossy, sourced from one of their favoured vineyards. This endeavour carries exceptional significance, as the bespoke wine crafted for the La Rose Noire Droptail stands as one of only a precious few vintages produced by the Chateau in its storied 160-year history. As a fitting prelude, the commissioning family procured a distinctive Rolls-Royce Champagne Chest. The chest, adorned with rose petal parquetry echoing the vehicle’s design, reflects the same level of exacting attention to detail as the coachbuilt Rolls-Royce. A mere touch of a button summons the Champagne Chest’s unveiling, revealing an intricate champagne set accompanied by hand-blown crystal champagne flutes. The exterior lid transforms into a serving tray crafted from bookmatched open pore Black Sycamore wood, showcasing a brushed and laser-cut stainless-steel inlay depicting the iconic Chateau.

The sides feature the same intricate parquetry as the La Rose Noire Droptail, concealing two hammocks designed to cradle the exclusive Champagne de Lossy, meticulously matched to the motor car’s palette. The thermal champagne coolers, meticulously fashioned from black anodized aluminium and carbon fibre, are rendered in the beguiling Mystery hue, ensuring the champagne remains impeccably chilled to perfection. La Rose Noire Droptail: A Captivating Legacy Elegantly interweaving passion with an unquenchable thirst for rich experiences, the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail stands as a romantic tribute to the visionary couple behind its creation. This opulent conveyance, envisioned through a lens of devotion and an insatiable appetite for meaningful moments, not only etches the patrons’ indelible legacy but also contributes to the tapestry of RollsRoyce Motor Cars’ enduring legend.

Breguet’s Timeless Tourbillon Embarks On A New Voyage The Visionary Horologist AbrahamLouis Breguet, Who Once Defied Gravity With The Invention Of The Tourbillon, Continues To Inspire The World Of Haute Horlogerie With The Release Of The All New Marine Collection

The Executive Magazine | 77

Lifestyle

The Innovation On June 26, 1801, the world of horology was forever altered with AbrahamLouis Breguet’s invention of the tourbillon. This groundbreaking discovery stemmed from Breguet’s realisation that the earthly gravitational pull affected the regularity of watch movements, primarily as timepieces during that era were predominantly worn vertically. The gravity-induced inconsistencies in rate propelled the horological savant to devise a solution by housing the entire escapement within a mobile carriage that completes a full rotation every minute. This ingenious mechanism allowed the errors to be consistently recreated and neutralised, while the perpetual alteration in the balance pivots’ contact point in their jewelled bearings enhanced lubrication, marking the birth of the tourbillon. Fast forward over two centuries, the tourbillon remains a captivating testament to horological ingenuity, a tradition Breguet honours in its esteemed Marine collection.

The Movement Encased within a 42.5 mm shell lies the self-automated Calibre 581, a slender movement merely 3mm in thickness, yet comprised of 330 meticulous components. Achieving such thinness was made feasible through the incorporation of a peripheral rotor. The balance operates at a frequency of 4 Hertz, boasting a remarkable 80-hour power reserve. In a bid to encompass modern advancements, the calibre is outfitted with a titanium carriage and a silicon balance-spring, a material revered for its resistance to corrosion, wear, and its imperviousness to magnetic fields. The intricately finished movement is unveiled through a sapphire case-back, with the barrel drum adorned with a compass rose, alongside various emblematic decorations of the Marine lineage, inclusive of a straight ribbed motif.

The Aesthetics The dial of the newly introduced 5577 model is bathed in a sunburst pattern, rendering a slate-grey hue for the rose gold variant and a navy blue shade for the platinum rendition. The tourbillon, conspicuously situated at 5 o’clock, captivates the observer as its cage performs a full rotation in 60 seconds. To accentuate this mechanism, the chapter ring has been deliberately off-centre, while the luminescent hour-markers and the open-tipped gold Breguet hands enhance visibility.

The Heritage A remarkable scientist and technician, Abraham-Louis Breguet’s fate became inextricably linked with the French Navy in 1814, upon his induction into the Bureau des Longitudes by royal edict. Tasked with addressing challenges tied to astronomical longitude determination at sea, Breguet’s expertise found royal recognition in 1815 when King Louis XVIII bestowed upon him the esteemed title of Chronometer-maker by appointment to the Royal Navy. Henceforth, the fleets of eminent explorers set sail equipped with Breguet’s timekeeping masterpieces. This novel timepiece, therefore, serves as a dual homage to Breguet’s profound contributions to both maritime navigation and astronomy.

20 Calibres In 17 Years Prestigious Independent Watch Brand MB&F Are Celebrating Their 20th Calibre Movement In 17 Years Of Watchmaking

I

In the complex and beautiful world of fine watchmaking, releasing each new watch with a new movement is extremely rare. It is more than unusual, and it is way past the point where something could politely be described as eccentric. In the watch industry, creating a new movement for each new watch, at the speed of one or two watches every year, is likely to get you labelled officially insane.

This is exactly what MB&F did, starting in 2007 with the HM1 engine. Over a period of 17 years, 20 calibres were created, the latest being 2022’s LM Sequential EVO. Initially working closely with external watchmakers, the first Friends in MB&F (Maximilian Büsser and Friends) vernacular, production metamorphosed into a predominantly in-house process, with the first fully internalised movement being 2014’s LM101 engine. Being avant-garde in design can sometimes allow people to forget about the technical expertise that inhabits every single MB&F Machine. Creations such as HM2 and HM3 “Frog” introduced advancements in sapphire crystal fabrication that took a significant step towards making complex 3D shapes in this notoriously difficult material. Even small features, such as the power reserve indication, have been used to showcase innovation, from LM1’s vertical power reserve indication to LMX’s hemispherical power reserve indication. Until now, the MB&F story has mostly been told in terms of the actual Machines themselves — Horological Machine N°1 (2007) that debuted Max Büsser’s new vision of watchmaking, Horological Machine N° 3 (2009) that cemented the brand’s reputation for design audacity, Legacy Machine N°1 (2011) that opened the next frontier of horological expression at the brand, or Legacy Machine Perpetual (2015) that rewrote the book on calendar watches. But what follows is not the MB&F story as you know it — because the Engines have their own voice. Each of the various external watchmakers behind MB&F’s movements brought something different to the table. Viewed as a whole, these differences provide a second perspective on the story of the brand —

an alternate dimension of mechanical interconnectivity that illuminates another side of the Machines. In context of the wider discourse about MB&F, it takes a certain capacity for analytical thought and horological understanding to perceive this dimension. Horological Machine N°1 and Horological Machine N°4 may look nothing alike to a casual observer, or even a relatively experienced watch enthusiast. Knowing that both HM1 and HM4 engines were conceived by Laurent Besse, knowing that both these projects are considered by Max Büsser the biggest professional and financial risks he ever undertook at MB&F brings out a previously hidden aspect of the MB&F Machines. So does the connection between HM2 and HM3, whose engines were signed by Jean-Marc Wiederrecht, and whose consecutive impact on the international watch community established the significance of MB&F in modern avantgarde horology. Think about how the hat-trick of LM1, HM5 and LM2 by Jean-François Mojon anchored the brand’s narrative continuity from 2011 to 2013 as MB&F embarked on the potentially destabilising new Legacy Machine collection. Or how Stephen McDonnell’s untrammelled engineering prowess fuelled LM Perpetual and LM Sequential EVO, MB&F’s two most mechanically innovative creations. There is also the spiritual patrimony that links otherwise disparate developments. A prime example is the existential debt owed by HM6 to HM4, with the success of the latter setting the foundation for another such audacious foray. Or the technical inheritance that traverses the line between Horological Machine and Legacy Machine, such as the acquisition of savoirfaire in vertically oriented tourbillon construction that passed from HM7 to LM FlyingT. Not to mention the groundbreaking split escapement that originated with LM Perpetual, took centre stage in LM SE and then made its latest appearance in HM10. The MB&F story, when viewed through the lens of its Machines, is a journey through the culture of modern independent horology. When viewed through the lens of its Engines, it is a map that charts the parallel rise of watchmaking technology itself. In the 17 years between 2005 and 2022, MB&F released 20 exceptional calibres, a rate of production unmatched by any other comparable brand. They say the real measure of a life is not the number of breaths you take, but the number of moments that take your breath away. Max out your Engines. It’s time to recognise what it truly means to create 20 calibres in 17 years. It’s time to take your breath away.
